Feminist Influence: Matilda Jocelyn Gage and Oz Witches

00:00:55
Speaker
Now for our fun fact of the day. Today we're exploring l Frank Baum's inspiration for the Good Witch and Wicked Witch in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and how the character Elphaba later got her name.
00:01:10
Speaker
So l Frank Baum married Maude Gage in 1882. Her mother was Matilda Jocelyn Gage, who was a woman's rights activist and author.
00:01:21
Speaker
Matilda Jocelyn Gage was also a serious scholar of witchcraft throughout history. Matilda wrote all about how the witch hunts in Europe and America weren't really about magic. They were basically attacks on women who knew too much, especially those into medicine, herbs, and midwifery.
00:01:40
Speaker
In 1893, she published a book called Woman, Church, and State, with a whole chapter on those European witch hunts. Her take was that the so-called witches were often just healers, scholars, and priestesses from pre-Christian traditions who got a bad rap.
00:01:59
Speaker
So Matilda welcomed l Frank Baum into their family and became his mentor. She encouraged his writing and they even worked together in some of his early stuff. They were very close.
00:02:10
Speaker
And they'd have long chats about folklore, myths, and how women were treated throughout history. So when L. Frank Baum was creating Oz, he had direct access to one of the leading feminist thinkers of his time, who specifically studied how the witch label was used to disempower women.
00:02:26
Speaker
And knowing that, it makes sense why the land of Oz is mostly run by women, both good and bad witches. Having a good witch archetype was actually breaking new ground, showing how women use their magic and power for good.
00:02:39
Speaker
The Wicked Witch of the West didn't actually have a name in the original book. When Gregory Maguire wrote Wicked in 1995, he needed to name her. So he just took l Frank Baum's initials and turned them into a name.
00:02:55
Speaker
Yes, he took LFB, made it sound like a word, and then the name Elphaba was born.
