Origin of Pumpkin Carving: From Turnips to Pumpkins

00:01:09
Speaker
Do you know which country started the tradition of carving pumpkins? It was Ireland. The tradition was started because of an Irish folktale about Stingy Jack.
00:01:19
Speaker
Apparently, Stingy Jack was a trickster who even tricked the devil. He was denied entry to both heaven and hell and was doomed to roam the earth forever. The devil did grant Stingy Jack one final wish, though, giving him a small, fiery coal from hell to give him a little light while roaming the world in darkness.
00:01:40
Speaker
He found a turnip and carved it out to hold his ember as a makeshift lantern. So to protect themselves from Jack's wandering spirit and other evil souls, the people of Ireland began carving frightening faces into turnips and placing them on their doorsteps with an ember or candle.
00:01:59
Speaker
Eventually, Irish immigrants brought this tradition to the U.S., but they began carving pumpkins instead of turnips, probably because they were more abundant here and or easier to carve.
00:02:11
Speaker
Will you be carving pumpkins this year? I wasn't planning on it, but I feel like this conversation is kind of getting me into the spirit. How about you? um I probably won't because I'm not very good at it, but I've seen your artwork.
00:02:28
Speaker
yeah I think it's great. No, I feel like I was a weird kid because I wasn't even excited to carve the pumpkins. I was more excited to like take the seeds out and then toast them in the oven and eat them.
00:02:39
Speaker
Those are good. I love those. That was my favorite part.

Okay, this or that. Which less desirable candy would you rather have? Whoppers or Jolly Ranchers? And I just do want to note that these might be people's favorites, but they're pretty low on the list for me.
00:03:38
Speaker
Yeah, they're pretty low on the list for me too. i think I'd have to choose Whoppers here though. i I'm not a huge fan of like fruit candies, so Whoppers for sure. Okay. And see, for me, the lesser of these two evils would be Jolly Ranchers.
