Fun Fact: Mario's Creation Story

00:00:54
Speaker
Now for our fun fact of the day, let's talk about one of our favorite mustached characters. Did you know the original name for the video game character Mario was Jumpman? Mario's first appearance was in the 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong. Nintendo originally wanted to create this as a Popeye game, but couldn't secure the rights.
00:01:20
Speaker
So they created their own little love triangle with Jumpman as the hero, like Popeye, Pauline as the damsel, like olive oil, and Donkey Kong as the villain, like Bluto.
00:01:34
Speaker
And if you think about it, it makes perfect sense. Jumpman needed to eat things for power, similar to Popeye needing to eat his spinach. It makes perfect sense. Eventually, he was given his name Mario in 1982. The story is that he was named after Nintendo's landlord in Washington State, who was renting out a warehouse to them.
00:01:58
Speaker
Apparently, they fell behind on rent and he gave them some extra time. So as a token of appreciation, they immortalized him in video game history.

Debate: Ron Burgundy vs. Ron Swanson

00:02:10
Speaker
All right, speaking of Jumpman, let's jump into a quick round of This or That based on today's theme.
00:02:18
Speaker
This or That? Who's funnier, Ron Burgundy from Anchorman or Ron Swanson from Parks and Rec? Oh, goodness. I have to go with Will Ferrell as Ron Burgundy.
00:02:31
Speaker
He's hilarious. but He does have some really quotable lines in that movie. It never gets old to me. I think I'd have to go with Ron Swanson. I just like the more dry, deadpan humor.
00:02:44
Speaker
That just is more my style, I guess. So i like it. But Ron Burgundy does have more quotable lines, I guess I'd say. But Ron Swanson cracks me up.

Musical Choice: Benson Boone Songs

00:02:56
Speaker
yeah we should get a show with them together i know how good would that be someone needs make we're on to something i think we are okay this or that benson boone songs slow it down or mystical magical he does have a pretty trendy mustache that benson bo he does i would have to go with slow it down oh i like that song better
00:03:22
Speaker
Okay, and I like Mystical Magical. It's just so upbeat. I just love it. Puts me in a good mood.
