The WOW Signal and Alien Speculation

00:01:09
Speaker
Now for our fun fact of the day. Have you heard about this theory connecting the WOW signal and the new comet 3I Atlas passing through our solar system?
00:01:22
Speaker
Back in 1977, Ohio State's Big Ear radio telescope picked up a mysterious 72-second radio burst coming from the direction of the Sagittarius constellation.
00:01:36
Speaker
The astronomer who spotted this strong signal wrote WOW on the printout, which is how it got its name. Many consider it one of our most compelling potential pieces of evidence for alien contact.
00:01:50
Speaker
So, unless you've been living under a rock lately, you've probably heard about the comet 3i Atlas that's currently making its way through our solar system. What's really interesting is that some astronomers have noticed it appears to come from the same general area as the WOW signal, the Sagittarius constellation.
00:02:08
Speaker
There's also theories that this comet is not acting like any comet we've seen before, so some people think it might be some sort of alien technology. One scientist pointed out that the WOW signal and the place where the comet originated are separated by only 9 degrees in the sky.
00:02:28
Speaker
And apparently the odds of two random celestial points being that closely aligned is less than 1%.
00:02:36
Speaker
Interesting. I mean, I'm not a scientist and it could be a coincidence, but it is fun to wonder if those two things are connected. I know. Honestly, part of me is hoping it's aliens coming to help us out or maybe take us someplace better.
00:02:51
Speaker
That would be nice. We'll see what happens.
