Introduction and Daily Reading

00:00:03
Speaker
Welcome everybody. Today is June 17th. You are here with Robin at In the Family Way Coaching and we are here for our daily Bible reading. We are going through the Day by Day Kids Bible written by Karen Henley.
00:00:18
Speaker
And if you are following along on your commitment calendar, go ahead and take that out and your sticker or however you're marking that off because you're about to hear the Bible today.
00:00:29
Speaker
I am so glad that you are here with me today, whether you are watching or listening. Thank you for joining me as we go through the Bible to this year.

Jeremiah and King Josiah

00:00:38
Speaker
Today we are going to be picking up in both Jeremiah and ah with King Josiah, who is the king of Judah.
00:00:49
Speaker
We are going to have chapter 20, which is entitled The Stocks. A stocks is a method of discipline that was used for quite some time in history, and it would keep both the hands and the feet inside of a wooden board.
00:01:08
Speaker
So it would open and the feet and the hands would be locked in and it would keep you in a kneeling position. And so that is what the stocks are. We're not referring to the stock market here.
00:01:24
Speaker
If you remember yesterday, ah we left off with Jeremiah ah having spoken to the people while the leaders were watching that ah for God told him to tell them that he will break the nation and this city like the pot that he broke.
00:01:43
Speaker
And it would be a pot that breaks and cannot be fixed. Okay. And then Jeremiah went to God's worship house and stood there and he told the people what you God had said. And he said, im listen, I'm going to bring all the trouble I told you about.
00:01:58
Speaker
And it's all because the people didn't care about me and they wouldn't listen. So this is picking up from that portion, that moment in time.
00:02:08
Speaker
Now the leader of the worship house heard what Jeremiah said. So he took Jeremiah away. He had Jeremiah beaten.
00:02:19
Speaker
Then this leader took Jeremiah to the upper gate at God's worship house, and he put Jeremiah in stocks. Jeremiah's legs and hands were locked in holes in wooden boards.
00:02:35
Speaker
The next day the man let Jeremiah go, and then Jeremiah said, God's name for you is fear on every side.
00:02:46
Speaker
God says he will make you afraid of yourself and you will scare your friends.
00:02:54
Speaker
God says that you will see your enemies kill your friends and he will give Judah to Babylon. Babylon will get all of Judah's riches. They will take you and your family to Babylon.
00:03:09
Speaker
They will take the friends you lied to. So you and your friends will die in Babylon.

Jeremiah's Struggles and Prophecies

00:03:17
Speaker
Then Jeremiah asked God, why was I ever born?
00:03:22
Speaker
I'll only see trouble and sadness. I will end my days feeling no good. God, you talked me into this.
00:03:34
Speaker
You were stronger you and you won. All day, everyone makes fun of me. And it's because all I say is trouble is coming.
00:03:45
Speaker
So your words get me in trouble. People say ugly, mean things to me. And what happens when I say that I won't talk about you anymore, God?
00:03:57
Speaker
Your word burns in my heart like fire. I cannot stay quiet and about it. I hear lots of whispers, tell on him, tell on him.
00:04:11
Speaker
And all my friends wait for me to say something wrong. but God is, you are like a great fighter. God is with me. So people who laugh at me won't win.
00:04:23
Speaker
They'll end up looking like no good. God of all power, you see people who do what is right. You look into their hearts and minds.
00:04:36
Speaker
Pay them back for what they did. I'm giving my life to you.
00:04:42
Speaker
Sing to God and cheer for God. He saves poor people's lives. He saves them from mean people.

King Josiah's Reforms

00:04:53
Speaker
Our next section is 2 Kings chapter 22 and 23 and 2 Chronicles 34. This is entitled, Finding a Book.
00:05:07
Speaker
Now Josiah was still Judah's king and he sent some men to God's worship house. He sent them there to fix it. Go to the priest, he said, and tell him to get the money the people have given and use that to pay the workers to fix the worship house.
00:05:24
Speaker
They can buy the wood and stone that they need. So the priest got the money and he gave it to the men who worked on the worship house. And the men did good work. They kept at it.
00:05:36
Speaker
Now while all of this was going on, the priest found something. It was the book of laws that God gave Moses. The priest went to one of the king's helpers.
00:05:49
Speaker
I found the law book in the worship house, he said. And the king's helper took the law book to King Josiah.
00:06:00
Speaker
We are doing what you asked, he said, and we paid the money to the workers, and then the priest gave me a book. The king's helper read part of the book to King Josiah.
00:06:14
Speaker
Now the king heard the words of the law book. Then he was so upset, he tore his robe and he told the leaders, go ask God about this book.
00:06:25
Speaker
God is very angry with us. And it's all because our families from long ago not obey his laws. They didn't do what this book says.
00:06:39
Speaker
So the leaders went to Huldah, a woman who was a prophet, and she lived in Jerusalem. Huldah told them God's words for the king. I'm going to get rid of this place and these people.
00:06:53
Speaker
They have turned against me. They worship idols, so I will let my anger flow out to them. Then she told them these words from God for the king.
00:07:07
Speaker
You listened. Your heart was sad when you heard my laws. You knew that you were not as great as I am. You tore your robe and you cried.
00:07:21
Speaker
I heard you. So you will live and die in peace. You won't see the trouble that is coming.
00:07:31
Speaker
The leaders went back and told the king about this. Then King Josiah called all of the leaders together and he led them to the worship house.
00:07:43
Speaker
All the other people went too and there Josiah read all the words of the law book. The king stood by a tall post and he promised to keep following God's laws.
00:07:57
Speaker
He promised to obey God with all his heart. He asked all the people to promise the same thing too. And the people did. Then King Josiah told the priests to clean out the worship house.
00:08:13
Speaker
He told them to take out everything made for idols. He burned the things that they took out. And he got rid of the priests who worshiped idols.
00:08:26
Speaker
he He got rid of the priests who worshiped the sun and moon. He got rid of priests who worshiped stars, and he tore down their worship places. There were wooden horses near the front of the worship house, and Judah's kings had made them to worship the sun.
00:08:46
Speaker
And they had made chariots to worship the sun too. So King Josiah burned them all. And King Josiah got rid of people who talked to spirits.
00:08:57
Speaker
He did all of this to follow God's laws. He told all the people to serve God. And as long as Josiah lived, they followed God.
00:09:09
Speaker
And one day Josiah was out burning down an idol's worship place. He saw a grave. Whose grave is that? he asked. It's the grave of a prophet, his men said.
00:09:23
Speaker
Long ago, he said these things were going to happen, and you have done what he said would happen. Then leave that grave alone, said Josiah.
00:09:37
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:09:43
Speaker
Do you remember yesterday we spoke about having an identity from God and how having our identity, our name that God gives us will help us know what we are, what our purpose is in life and what we will do in life.
00:09:59
Speaker
Throughout the Bible, there are many name changes. God tit changed Jacob's name to Israel. And he changed Abram's name to Abraham.
00:10:11
Speaker
He changed sa's sara's name Sarah's name to Sarai, Sarai's name to Sarah. And we hear that, we read that Jesus has many names as well.
00:10:23
Speaker
And Jesus tells us that when he returns, he will be given a new name. We all have many names that God has given us. Isn't that wonderful?
00:10:36
Speaker
Well, here we read that God is giving a new name to Peshur, who is the leader at the temple, God's worship house.
00:10:48
Speaker
And he has changed his name to fear on air every side. In our big Bible, it actually says terror, terror on every side, because God says he will make you afraid of yourself.
00:11:05
Speaker
He would make this man afraid of himself and all of his friends were going to be afraid of him. Oftentimes the names are ah revealing about a person.
00:11:21
Speaker
They tell us who a person it is. Like Jesus, he is the Prince of Peace. He is Emmanuel, which means God with us. He is so many names.
00:11:35
Speaker
And here we see this name change, not to something positive, but to show who he really is. His name was to be terror on every side.
00:11:47
Speaker
He says that he would see the enemies kill his friends and he would give Judah to Babylon. God would give Judah to Babylon and Babylon would get all of Judah's riches.
00:11:59
Speaker
And they were going to take that man into Babylon as captive. and his family. And they would take all the friends he lied to because he was false prophesying.
00:12:10
Speaker
He was not telling God's words. And so he punished also, this man Peshawar was punishing Jeremiah by having him beaten, which was whipped and placed in the stocks.
00:12:23
Speaker
So God was not going to let this man go unpunished for how he treated Jeremiah.

Personal Identity and Purpose in God

00:12:31
Speaker
And I wanted to point out that name change.
00:12:39
Speaker
Our daily application today is two different things. One, Jeremiah talks about his God's word burning in his heart like fire.
00:12:51
Speaker
It says he can't stay quiet about it.
00:12:56
Speaker
This is referring to the mission, the the purpose that God has given him, that it can be a hard job. And dar Jeremiah describes how hard it is for him to do it because he's not popular with people.
00:13:08
Speaker
But he knows that he can't even stay quiet because God's word burns in him for him to speak it. And that when he does, he knows that God has his life.
00:13:21
Speaker
He has given his life to God and he knows that God will take care of it and that he will pay back the people who have done terrible things to him. That vengeance is God's, not his.
00:13:35
Speaker
But that tells us that we need to keep strong in whatever mission God has given us. We may not be popular in what we are doing, but if we are doing God's work, we will know that we are doing it because it it will burn within us and we can't help but do it.
00:13:52
Speaker
When we feel God's call on our life, he really puts it on us strongly. He may not speak verbally like he did with Jeremiah, but we will know that we are doing God's work and what we are called to do when it is just something we can't help but do.
00:14:11
Speaker
And oftentimes we can understand that better by learning who we are in God, the identity, the name that he has given us. So I wanted to encourage you again to ask God the name that he has given you.
00:14:25
Speaker
To say, God, my parents gave me the name, whatever your name is. Who do you say that I am? And listen to him and he will tell you.
00:14:37
Speaker
And what you hear coming into your mind is the name that God has given you. And then you can be it. And then you will burn with the God's holy fire that you will know that what you are to do with that.
00:14:53
Speaker
It's amazing. it's like It's such an amazing transformation process. Our next daily application is that families, it's very important.
00:15:06
Speaker
So like you, Forrest and Jedi and Pearl and Diamond, your mom and dad are bringing you up to know God's laws, God's rules, and the way God wants things to be done.
00:15:19
Speaker
We see here what happens when parents do not bring their children up to know God. they They don't learn about God's rules.
00:15:30
Speaker
They don't know how to behave. And so once the law book had been found and Josiah read and heard what God's rules were, he was very frustrated and upset. And he said, this is why things are happening the way they are happening.
00:15:46
Speaker
It's because our parents didn't teach us correctly. and it passed down from generation to generation. I'm going to read just how much Josiah ended up

Cultural Idolatry and Parental Influence

00:16:00
Speaker
getting rid of. We had a pretty good description of of what he got rid of. It says that when he was got rid of all of the idols that were being worshiped, he understood when he read God's law book.
00:16:13
Speaker
that back in Deuteronomy, God had told them what would happen if they did what was going on right now, if they behaved the way they were right now. And so he had understanding that the reason things were happening and why Jeremiah was prophesying about ah this terrible thing coming from Babylon is because this had been an ongoing behavior pattern with worshiping idols.
00:16:40
Speaker
And we talked the other day about how God said that the people of other nations didn't change their gods, even though they weren't real, they kept worshiping them, but that Jerusalem was going after every god.
00:16:54
Speaker
Listen to how many things they got rid of. We already read about the wooden horses that were put up as decoration to worship the sun god. There were chariots to worship the sun god.
00:17:08
Speaker
And these are examples kind of like of what we have today, where we are teaching in the world tolerance. Tolerance for all forms of religion, for can't we all just get along?
00:17:22
Speaker
God says that the world has a choice. People can choose to follow. So we don't have a church state like what Israel had, where they were only to worship the one.
00:17:37
Speaker
But this is the same type of situation that we find here, is that there were so many options. They could worship anything they wanted to. And Israel was letting them do it. Judah was letting them do it.
00:17:51
Speaker
So I'm going to turn to Jeremiah chapter 20 in our big Bible. And I'm going to read the many, many things. Oh, it's not actually in Jeremiah.
00:18:03
Speaker
Sorry, it's in 2 Kings verse ah chapter 23. And
00:18:10
Speaker
and it goes on for a good bit of the chapter. to describe the many kinds of idols and places of worship that Josiah got rid of. They were completely surrounded and inundated.
00:18:26
Speaker
they were They were immersed in a culture of idolatry. They had, if you notice what we read in here, it says that that Josiah cleaned out God's worship house. They were still, even though they had been cleaned out before, there were still idols and idol worshiping things in God's worship house.
00:18:48
Speaker
They were using God's worship house to worship any and every idol. Is it any wonder that God was so frustrated and so upset with the people? They went into his home, his worship house, and they just worshiped anything and everything.
00:19:07
Speaker
It says here, starting in verse four of second Kings chapter 23,
00:19:15
Speaker
that King Josiah
00:19:20
Speaker
ordered them to bring out of the temple of the Lord, all of the vessels made for Baal and Asherah and all of the the stars of heaven.
00:19:33
Speaker
And he burned them outside. He burned them out in Jerusalem in the fields. He stopped the idolatrous priests. whom the kings of Judah had ordained.
00:19:44
Speaker
So these were kings, these were the fathers, the parents, who had ordained the burning of incense on the high places in the towns of Judah and around Jerusalem, as well as those burning incense to Baal, and the sun, and the moon, and the constellations, and to all the stars of heaven.
00:20:03
Speaker
Then he brought out the Asherah pole from the house of the Lord, burned it, Then he tore down, they had they had an area for um male prostitutes.
00:20:21
Speaker
I didn't even know that that was a thing. That had been in the house of the Lord, where the women had been weaving coverings for the Asherah.
00:20:33
Speaker
Then he brought all of the priests from the town of Judah, and defiled the high places where the priests had burned incense. He broke down the high places of the gates that were at the entrance of the gates of Joshua, the city governor, which were on the left as one entered the city gate.
00:20:54
Speaker
So even as you entered the city of Jerusalem, they had places of worship set up to worship right as you walked into Judah.
00:21:04
Speaker
He says, nevertheless, the priests of the high places did not go up to the altar of the Lord in Jerusalem, but they did choose to eat the matzo with their kinsmen.
00:21:17
Speaker
He defiled an area called Topheth so that no one might make his son or daughter pass through the fire for Malak. Remember, they were burning their children.
00:21:29
Speaker
This was still going on during King Josiah's time.
00:21:33
Speaker
They did away with the horses that the kings of Judah had dedicated to the sun at the entrance to the house of the Lord. And he burned the chariots of the sun with fire.
00:21:45
Speaker
The king tore down the altars made by the kings of Judah on the roof, the upper chambers of Ahaz and the altars of Manasseh. that Manasseh had made in the two courtyards of the house of the Lord.
00:21:57
Speaker
So in the courtyards of God's temple, there were altars made for other gods. He smashed those. The king desecrated the shrines.
00:22:08
Speaker
These were statues that were facing Jerusalem to the south of the Mount of Destruction, which King Solomon of Israel had built for Ashtoreth, the abomination of the zi Zidonians.
00:22:23
Speaker
Also for Chemosh, the abomination of Moab, and for Milcom, the abomination of the Ammonites. So they were, see all of these different gods? I didn't even know there were this many. He smashed the pillars and cut down the Asherah poles and filled their places with the bones.
00:22:40
Speaker
Then there was the altar that was at Bethel and the shrine built by Jeroboam, son of Nebat, who caused Israel to sin. So he took his purification all the way into Israel for the remnant, for the people who were left in Israel.
00:22:55
Speaker
The altar and the shrine, he demolished them too. He burned the shrine and the and ground it to dust and burned up the Asherah.
00:23:07
Speaker
He removed all the shrines of the high places that the kings of Israel had built in the towns of Samaria. And he did it he did to them just as he had done in Bethel. And all the priests of the high places there he slaughtered, he killed on the altars and burned their bones on them.
00:23:25
Speaker
And then he returned to Jerusalem. He says when he got back to Jerusalem, then it's not done yet. Josiah got rid of the necromancers, which were people who were practicing magic, the mediums, which were people who were practicing talking to spirits, the teraphim and the idols, and all the detestable things that were seen in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem in order to confirm the words of the Torah that were written in the scroll that Hilkiah, the priest, had found in the house of the Lord.
00:24:00
Speaker
So I thought it was important to note that when parents don't teach their children, the the values degraded and kept degrading and kept degrading and kept degrading.
00:24:17
Speaker
throughout generations. So it was no wonder that God was so upset. So parents, moms, dads, take heart and know that you are doing a great job teaching your children about the Lord and to keep doing it because you are preventing these terrible things from happening in your family down in the future.
00:24:42
Speaker
we have We are seeing today in the world a degradation of that, that people are not teaching their children about God. And we've seen that, that we are the the children are being taught tolerance and acceptance of anything and everything.
00:24:59
Speaker
And we see by looking at the past that that is what the future looks like. We see it happening again.

Remaining Righteous and Spreading God's Word

00:25:06
Speaker
So we need to be careful full and not immerse ourselves in that culture.
00:25:12
Speaker
It's going to be all around us, but we need to be the ones that are found righteous when God returns. And it's not necessarily easy with everything happening around us. It it can be easy to adopt other things of the world as we see happened in the temple in Jerusalem.
00:25:33
Speaker
It happened one bit at a time. Things just infiltrated and became accustomed and became normalized and the people didn't think anything of it. It was just considered what they'd always seen.
00:25:45
Speaker
They didn't know that what they were doing was detestable to the Lord. And so we need to look and examine to see, are there things in our home that we need to get rid of?
00:25:59
Speaker
Are there things in the church that need to be gotten rid of? Are there things that we are doing with our families that need to be stopped so that we are not allowing the ways of the world to become normalized rather than following God's ways?
00:26:16
Speaker
And that is our really big takeaway today. and for our daily application so thank you for joining me today and i hope that you feel that god has set your heart afire not just that you feel god's light but that you are on fire for god that you feel his call on you to take to do his work for him to cleanse your neighborhood or your homes or your churches where these things may be happening today
00:26:48
Speaker
the to follow God's rules and the way he set things up to be. And I would encourage you also to click that light button so that we can draw others to hear this message so that they too may know God's desires on these matters.
00:27:04
Speaker
And that I thank you for also clicking that follow and subscribe button because I'm seeing more people doing that. So thank you for that. Not for me. It's not for me. This is for God's event.
00:27:15
Speaker
These are like Jeremiah. I feel God's word burning in my heart that the Holy Spirit opens my mouth to speak these things. So these are ah not my own opinions. These are what we are seeing in scripture and what God is giving through his spirit for me too to talk about.
00:27:34
Speaker
So they may not be considered popular like what Jeremiah said, but ah For those who are called to God's purposes, um i know that it will reach your heart as well and that you will feel that within you.
00:27:51
Speaker
So thank you for joining me here today. And let's spread the word. Let's share this event so that we can spread the word about reading God's word. It's like Josiah when he read God's word and he was convicted.
00:28:03
Speaker
And we want people to be convicted by the Holy Spirit so that God can purify his people. I hope you have a fantastic rest of your day, and I will be here for everyone again tomorrow.
