Thank you for joining me as we learn about the connection between Passover, First Fruits, Shavuot (pronounced shav-oo-oat) and Pentecost. As part of understanding and observing the festivals that God has appointed for us to observe, we count the Omer (pronounced oh-mare) today and then have our daily Bible reading session!

Here is the link for a downloadable devotional if you would like to count the Omer for yourself. It has been put out by the Messianic Jewish Congregation Shoresh David in Florida:   https://www.shoreshdavid.org/download/counting-the-omer-booklet/

Today's reading finishes 1 Kings Chapters 20 and 21. Today we will read about King Aram believing that God is only a little hill god and will return to fight King Ahab on flat ground, thinking he will win the battle by being outside of the territory of God. We will see God tell King Ahab what the king of Aram is thinking and that He will be with the Israelites to win the battle. We will see King Ahab not obeying God and instead making a deal with the King of Aram!  In our discussion for daily application we will talk about how we are called as God's people to be different in the world. We are set apart by God and need to trust in HIM, not trust in the world to keep us safe. We need to live differently, follow and obey God rather than the ways of the world!

If you would like to join me LIVE for the daily reading you can register to attend on my site, here:   https://www.inthefamilywaycoaching.com/schedule

Welcome and Introduction

00:00:03
Speaker
Hello everybody. Today is Monday. It is May 25th, May 5th, 2025. And you are here with Robin In The Family Way Coaching.
00:00:14
Speaker
I am so glad that you are here with me today, whether you are following along on your favorite podcast or whether you are listening or following along on video. I'm so glad that you're here today.

Participating in the Omer

00:00:26
Speaker
We are here for our daily counting of the Omer and we are also going to be doing our daily Bible reading out of the Day by Day Kids Bible which has been written by Karen Henley.
00:00:39
Speaker
And if you are following along on your daily commitment calendar, it's time to get that out and get that sticker ready or however it is that you're marking off your calendar because you're about to hear the Bible today.
00:00:56
Speaker
For our daily counting of the Omer, all you need to do is follow along and repeat after me, and then you also will have counted the Omer. I love that this is a reminder that we have the blessing first, where we tell God how blessed He is, because He has set us apart by His commandments to be different in the world.
00:01:18
Speaker
And part of the way we are different is by counting the Omer that He has given us to do. We are supposed to look different while we were are in the world, but not of the world. And so this is one of the ways that he has set us apart.
00:01:36
Speaker
Blessed are you, O Lord our God, King of the universe, who has set us apart by your commandments and has commanded us to count the Yomer.
00:01:55
Speaker
Today is the first day of the fourth week and day 22. I have counted the Omer.

Source of Omer Readings

00:02:10
Speaker
As always, I will have the link for where I am reading this from. It is a devotional that has been put out by ShoreshDavid.org and that is a Messianic Jewish congregation out of Florida.
00:02:21
Speaker
And you can find the wording for reading the Omer probably anywhere if you just did a Google search, because that is a standard blessing. And it doesn't matter which way you do the wording. ah They do it slightly differently on Saturdays when I attend the Shabbat service at the Messianic congregation where I am going.
00:02:41
Speaker
But it's all the same information. But on sunday Saturday, they do count the Omer.

Gratitude and Morning Routine

00:02:48
Speaker
And I am just so thankful to God because I am up bright and early this morning and getting my recording done before I go to work for my early 6.30 shift. Whoo!
00:02:57
Speaker
God is great! I am so thankful to Him for getting me ready in time so that I could get my recording done before I head off to work today. That's always been a challenge for me when I have an early morning shift.
00:03:10
Speaker
is that I'm usually so tired, but he gave me rest this past week, and I have been ah waking up feeling more rested. So I am so thankful to God for that.
00:03:21
Speaker
I just popped right up today at the grand old hour at 3.30.
00:03:27
Speaker
But I did go to bed early enough, too.

The King of Aram's Plan

00:03:31
Speaker
and So as you may remember, yesterday in our reading, we finished with ah the king of Aram and King Ahab in a battle, and God had given the battle to King Ahab.
00:03:46
Speaker
King Ahab is the king of Israel, and he is based out of Samaria. So today's reading will finish 1 Kings chapter 20 and also 1 Kings chapter 21.
00:04:00
Speaker
This section is entitled, The Enemy Comes Back. as If you recall, yesterday the prophet came back to King Ahab and said to make your army stronger, make your city stronger, because the king of Aram will come back to fight, and he will come back next spring.
00:04:18
Speaker
And here we're going to see that happen.
00:04:21
Speaker
The leaders of Aram told their king, Israel's gods are hill gods. That's why they won. If we fight on flat ground, we'll win.
00:04:34
Speaker
Get more men for your army. Get more horses and chariots. Then we can fight Israel on flat ground. Now the king of Aram thought his leaders were right, so he did what they said.
00:04:46
Speaker
And the next spring, he went back to fight against Israel.
00:04:52
Speaker
The army of Israel came to meet the army of Aram. The two armies made their camps and the army of Israel camped on one side of the valley and there they looked like two small groups of goats.

Israel's Victory

00:05:08
Speaker
The army of Aram camped on the other side of the valley and there were so many of them that they covered the ground. The prophet came back to King Ahab and the prophet told the king what God had said.
00:05:24
Speaker
The people of Aram think I'm just a hill god. They don't think I'm a god of valleys too. So I am going to give their army to you. You will win and then you will know that I am God.
00:05:39
Speaker
The armies camped near the valley for a week. At the end of the week, they began fighting. The army of Israel was winning. Lots of enemy men ran into a city, but the wall of that city fell.
00:05:57
Speaker
It fell on 27,000 men that were enemy men. The king of Aram had run into that city too. He was hiding in a room there.
00:06:09
Speaker
His officers told him, we've heard that Israel's kings are kind. So let's give up and go to King Ahab and maybe he won't kill us.
00:06:20
Speaker
So the officers of Aram went to King Ahab. The king of Aram will be your servant, they said. Please don't kill him. Is he still alive?
00:06:31
Speaker
Asked King Ahab. He will be like a brother to me. The officers of Aram thought this was good. "'Yes,' they said. "'He is like a brother to you.' "'Bring him here,' said King Ahab.
00:06:47
Speaker
So the king of Aram came out, and King Ahab asked him to come up into his chariot. "'I will give cities to you,' said the king of Aram. "'They are the cities that my father took from you. "'Then Israel may sell things in my cities.' I'll let them do it because my father sold things in your cities.
00:07:11
Speaker
It's a deal, said King Ahab. I will let you go free. So they made the deal, and then the king of Aram was set free.

Prophet's Warning to Ahab

00:07:22
Speaker
Now God spoke to another prophet, and God told him what to say.
00:07:28
Speaker
So the prophet told a man, Please hit me. But the man wouldn't do it. The prophet said, you did not obey God, so a lion will kill you.
00:07:41
Speaker
The man left and then a lion did kill him.
00:07:46
Speaker
The prophet went to another man. Please hit me, he said. So the man hit him and the prophet got hurt. Then the prophet pulled his headband down over his eyes and he went to the road.
00:08:00
Speaker
He waited for King Ahab to pass by. As King Ahab went by, the prophet called to him. I went into battle, he said. Someone brought a man over to me, and this man was part of the enemy's army.
00:08:16
Speaker
I was told to watch this man and not to let him get away. I was told if he got away, I'd have to give my life for his life, or I'd have to pay with silver.
00:08:28
Speaker
But I was busy with the fight, and the man got away. Well, then you are to blame, said King Ahab. You were told what would happen if you let the man go. Then the prophet pulled up his headband, and the King Ahab saw that he was one of God's prophets.
00:08:47
Speaker
The prophet told Ahab what God's message was. The king of Aram should have died, but you set him free, so you will give your life for his life.
00:09:02
Speaker
King Ahab was angry when he heard this, and he went off to his palace.

Naboth's Vineyard and Divine Judgment

00:09:10
Speaker
King Ahab and the Grapefield, 1 Kings, Chapter 21. Time passed, and there was a grapefield next to King Ahab's palace. It belonged to a man named Naboth.
00:09:24
Speaker
King Ahab told Naboth, I want your grapefield. I want to make it into a vegetable garden. So let's make a deal. I will pay you for your grape field or I'll give you a better field for it.
00:09:39
Speaker
No, said Naboth. This field has belonged to my family for many years. My father gave it to me and I will not give it to you. King Ahab went home.
00:09:51
Speaker
He was sad and angry and he lay down on his bed and he wouldn't eat anything.
00:09:59
Speaker
Jezebel, his wife, came in. Why are you sad and angry? she asked him. Why won't you eat anything?
00:10:09
Speaker
Naboth won't sell me his grape field, said Ahab. I even said I'd trade him another field for it. You're the king of Israel, said Jezebel.
00:10:20
Speaker
Is this how a king acts? Get up, eat something, and don't worry. I will get the grape field for you.
00:10:29
Speaker
Jezebel wrote some letters. She signed King Ahab's name and she put his special seal on them. Then she sent the lead sent them to the leaders of Naboth city.
00:10:41
Speaker
And here's what the letter said. Have a big dinner party and let Naboth sit where the important people sit. Then get two mean men and let them sit on the other side of the table.
00:10:56
Speaker
Have them tell everyone that Naboth said bad things about God. And they should tell everyone that Naboth said bad things about the king too. Then take Naboth out and kill him by throwing rocks at him.
00:11:13
Speaker
And this is just what the leaders did. They had their party and the two mean men did come. And they lied about Naboth. Then they dragged him outside and killed him.
00:11:27
Speaker
After that, they sent a message back to Jezebel that said, Naboth is dead.
00:11:33
Speaker
Jezebel went to King Ahab. You can have that grape field now, she said. Naboth is dead.
00:11:42
Speaker
So King Ahab went out to take the grape field. Then God told Elijah, Go go see King Ahab. He has gone down to take Naboth's grape field.
00:11:55
Speaker
God told Elijah what to say to Ahab, and these were God's words. You killed a man. You took his field.
00:12:07
Speaker
You will die where Naboth died. Dogs will lick up your blood. Yes, your blood.
00:12:15
Speaker
Elijah went to King Ahab, and King Ahab said, So it's my old enemy. You found me. Yes, said Elijah, and it's because you sinned.
00:12:28
Speaker
God said he is bringing you trouble. No one in your family will live. You've made God angry. You've made God's people in Israel sin.
00:12:39
Speaker
Let's talk about Jezebel too, said Elijah. Dogs will eat her up, and your family will be like Jeroboam's family. Dogs will eat the ones who die in the city, and birds will eat the ones who die in the country.
00:12:56
Speaker
Now King Ahab was very upset. He tore his clothes, he didn't eat, and he walked around quietly. God said to Elijah, see what Ahab is doing.
00:13:11
Speaker
He is showing that he is sorry. So I am not going to bring terrible trouble while he is alive. I will bring it on his son.
00:13:22
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:13:29
Speaker
We read a couple of months ago about one of the kings. I was trying to remember his name and I didn't spend the time to look it up. ah But there was a king who was told to go to battle and kill the other kings when they were ah first coming into um the promised land.
00:13:49
Speaker
And he did not kill the king. He said, oh yeah, i i took I took some of the best things and I saved them for you, God. And no, I didn't kill the king. And the prophet came.
00:14:00
Speaker
And again, I can't remember his name off the top of my head. But he came and said, you did not obey God. You were told to kill him and get not to keep anything.
00:14:11
Speaker
And he said, oh, I did obey. you said, well, the king is right here. He's not dead. And then the prophet killed the king himself. And this is exactly the same thing that King Ahab did.
00:14:25
Speaker
God was defending him himself. He was showing the king of Aram that he was not just a hill god with a small g. He is Yahweh. He is the Lord. He is the God.
00:14:39
Speaker
There is one God, only one. And the king of Aram thought he was just one of many gods and that he was just a small God who was just strong in the hills.
00:14:52
Speaker
So God was to show them that he was a mighty God, the mighty God, and that he was supposed to win with Ahab. And Ahab instead took mercy on king of Aram and he saved him. And instead he made deal with him.
00:15:12
Speaker
Now, if he had not been told by God that he would win and and why, then perhaps he would not have been sinning. But we have seen that that the kings of Israel and Judah keep making deals with the king of Aram left and right.
00:15:28
Speaker
First, the king of Aram had a deal with Israel. And then the king of Judah made a deal with Aram to break their deal with judah or with Israel. And now the king of Aram wants to make another deal with Israel.
00:15:41
Speaker
So he is just, ah he's flipping sides of the fence back and forth. And he's doing so in his own benefit, not because he wants to ah be truthful and make an alliance and to and to see who the real God is.
00:15:57
Speaker
He's just being a ah typical human king there. And that is not what God told King Ahab was going to happen. So King Ahab had sinned against God by not kill killing the ah King Aram.
00:16:16
Speaker
And then we see that he also ah allows his wife Jezebel to do bad things with his name. She just tells him what to do. She had already threatened to kill Elijah. She had been responsible for killing a lot of the prophets in the land, all of them, except for the ones that ah were saved and and held a secret in the caves,
00:16:42
Speaker
which ah they didn't tell us, but I think that they were eventually found and killed too, because i'm they didn't tell us exactly what happened on that one, but Elijah said he was the last of the prophets. And King ara king ah Ahab just lets Jezebel do whatever she wants.
00:16:58
Speaker
And our ah daily application today is that we need to obey God.

Obeying and Defending God's Honor

00:17:03
Speaker
And we need to be ah full of zeal for our God to show that he is God.
00:17:11
Speaker
And when God gives us something to do, he's not going to send us out to kill kings for the most part. But we need to defend God's name. God is supposed to be the most important one, and we need to stand up for him, not be looking out for our own best interest.
00:17:28
Speaker
The king of Israel, Ahab, he was trying to look out for his his own interest as well. He was not being zealous for God. Instead, he was simply being merciful to somebody who was not honoring God.
00:17:44
Speaker
And in our daily life, we may come across times where we need to defend our God. We need to be different in the world. We are counting the Omer. We are set apart by his commandments.
00:17:58
Speaker
We are not to be of the world. We are to be in the world, but not of the world. And that we need to behave differently as God's people and to so that people will see that we are set apart by God.
00:18:13
Speaker
We are not part of the world. And it can be difficult when everybody else around us is doing the same things and they want us to be following right along, whether it's watching a TV show or are speaking poorly about somebody.

Being Distinct as God's People

00:18:30
Speaker
However it is, these things go against the way we know God wants us to behave.
00:18:37
Speaker
And so it is very important that we obey God not the world, and that we show that we are set apart by God, that we are different.
00:18:49
Speaker
There is something different about us, that we don't just blend in and are like camouflage where you can't see us as being different from the rest of the world. And so that is our daily application today, is to be different in the world.
00:19:05
Speaker
And to be zealous for our God. If we hear somebody speaking poorly about him, and we need to speak up on his behalf. Not because God can't speak up on his own behalf, but because we need to show that we are obeying and following God.
00:19:22
Speaker
That we are not following the world.
00:19:26
Speaker
So thank you for joining me today.

Closing and Encouragement

00:19:29
Speaker
And I hope that you feel that God has lit your light today. And I hope that you will go out in your day and show that you are of God, not of the world today.
00:19:39
Speaker
And if you have felt that God has lit your light and given you some strength to follow him rather than the world, I ask that you click that light button so that we can encourage others to also be different in the world, that they may hear this message and go out and show Jesus's light into the world.
00:19:58
Speaker
And then if you know somebody who could benefit from this event, please share it with them. And together we can help spread the word about reading God's word, which has so many valuable lessons for us.
00:20:10
Speaker
Every single day we have daily application in God's word. And that's why it's important to read God's word. So thank you very much. And I will be here with for everybody again tomorrow.
00:20:22
Speaker
And I hope you have a fantastic rest of your day.
