Today's reading will cover 2 Kings Chapters 13, 14, and 2 Chronicles Chapter 25. Today we will see God's great compassion for His people of Israel, that when the king cries out to God, God will save Israel from the Arameans. We will also see King Amaziah, from Judah, obeying God when God sent a prophet to him telling him not to use hired men from Israel to help him win a battle. Later on we will see the same king disobeying God when told not to worship idols he brought back from the battle God helped him win! In our discussion for daily application we will talk about being mindful not to become arrogant in our perceived successes. We may be obedient to God for a time and experience success, but that does not entitle us to be arrogant  and not expect to be disciplined later when we fail to obey God, especially when God convicts us of our sins and tells us not to do something. It is God who decides the winning or losing of battles for us, not our own strength or cleverness or even past obedience.

Omer Counting and Time Constraints

00:00:47
Speaker
It is late in the day, so we are going to skip the counting of the Omer today. i did not forget. I just know that on Saturdays and Sundays, we all get busy, and it's just not something that I know that we have time to do ah to catch up with the events. We will do, you guys will catch up on during the week.
00:01:07
Speaker
So rather than do the counting of Omer for a day that's already passed, that doesn't make any sense, right? Let's go ahead and get started with our reading today.

Story of Jehoahaz, Jehoash, and Elisha

00:01:16
Speaker
Today we are going to be reading 2 Kings chapters 13 and 14 and 2 Chronicles chapter 25.
00:01:26
Speaker
And today we are going to be reading about the king of Israel. We left off yesterday with Joash had a son named Amaziah and he became the next king of Judah.
00:01:41
Speaker
Now back in Israel, King Jehu died and his son Jehoahaz became Israel's next king. He was a bad king. He did what was wrong.
00:01:53
Speaker
and God was angry at his people in Israel. So he let the king of Aram rule over them. Then the king of Israel asked for God's help. God listened.
00:02:05
Speaker
He saw how the king of Aram treated his people. Israel had only 10 chariots left, they had only 50 horse riders, and the king of Aram had gotten rid of the all the others.
00:02:20
Speaker
King Jehoahaz died, and his son Jehoash became Israel's next king. He was a bad king too, and he kept sinning.
00:02:31
Speaker
Now Elisha got sick, and King Jehoash went to visit him. Jehoash cried, Bring a bow and some arrows, said Elisha. So Jehoash brought a a bow and some arrows.
00:02:46
Speaker
Elisha put his hands on Jehoash's hands. Open the window that looks east, said Elisha. Jehoash opened the window.
00:02:58
Speaker
Now shoot an arrow out of it, said Elisha. Jehoash shot an arrow. This arrow means you will win, said Elisha.
00:03:10
Speaker
You will win over the army of Aram and you will get rid of them. Now hold the arrows, said Elisha. Jehoash held the other arrows.
00:03:21
Speaker
Hit the ground, said Elisha. Jehoash hit the ground three times. But Elisha was angry. You should have hit the ground five or six times.
00:03:35
Speaker
Now you will win over Aram just three times.
00:03:40
Speaker
Later, Elisha died and his body was put in a grave. Sometimes enemy robbers came into the land. They came every spring. And one day some people were putting a man's body in a grave and all of a sudden they saw the robbers coming.
00:03:57
Speaker
So they threw the body into Elisha's grave. The body fell on Elisha's bones. And all of a sudden, the man came back to life and stood up.
00:04:12
Speaker
Our next section is entitled Judah and Israel Fight.

Conflicts between Judah and Israel

00:04:18
Speaker
Back in Judah, King Amaziah got his army together. And he paid some of the men from Israel to fight with him.
00:04:27
Speaker
one of the One of God's prophets came to Amaziah. Don't let the men of Israel fight with you, he said. God has left Israel. You might be very brave when you fight, but you will not win if they fight with you.
00:04:44
Speaker
It's God who helps you win or lose. Well, what about the money I paid the army of Israel? Asked Amaziah. God can give you a lot more than that, said the prophet.
00:04:58
Speaker
So King Amaziah sent the fighters from Israel home, and that made them very angry with him. King Amaziah led his army into the Salt Valley, and they began to fight the enemy, and they won.
00:05:13
Speaker
But the men that Amaziah sent home began fighting his towns, and they killed lots of people, and then they took whatever they wanted. King Amaziah brought the enemy's idols back with him, and he worshiped them as if they were his own gods.
00:05:35
Speaker
So God was very angry at King Amaziah. God sent a prophet to him. Why are you praying to these idols? The prophet said. They couldn't even save their own people from you.
00:05:48
Speaker
Hush, said King Amaziah. Who said you could tell me what to do? Then the prophet said, God plans to get rid of you and it's because you worship these idols and won't listen to me.
00:06:02
Speaker
King Amaziah talked to his leaders and he sent a message to King Jehoash in Israel. Come out to fight us. Jehoash sent this message back.
00:06:16
Speaker
You won your fight, so you're proud. You think you're great. You're like a weed that thinks it can marry a tree. but then a wild animal walks all over the wheat.
00:06:28
Speaker
You'd better stay home. You're just asking for trouble. Amaziah would not change his mind. God was working to tear him down because he had worshiped idols.
00:06:44
Speaker
So out marched the armies of Israel and Judah. They began to fight each other. Israel won. The army of Judah ran away and Israel's King Jehoash caught Judas King Amaziah.
00:06:58
Speaker
Jehoash took Amaziah back to Amaziah's own city of Jerusalem and Jehoash broke part of the wall down. He took all the riches in the worship house.
00:07:10
Speaker
He took all the riches in the palace. He took some people and then he went back to Israel leaving Amaziah with no riches.

God's Compassion and Warnings against Pride

00:07:22
Speaker
Sometime later, King Jehoash died. His son Jeroboam II became Israel's king. He was a bad king.
00:07:33
Speaker
He did what was wrong. The prophet Jonah lived while Jeroboam II was king. And that's the end of our reading today.
00:07:48
Speaker
So today we saw God disciplining both Israel and Judah, but we see again, God's faithfulness that when the people of Israel turned to God, God still showed mercy and forgiveness to his people and help them because he was so compassionate.
00:08:11
Speaker
It says that he saw the way that the King of Aram was treating his people. He had compassion on them. Our God is so compassionate that it's just, it's just really amazing to me as I read these stories. I hope it's amazing to you too.
00:08:28
Speaker
They really inspire me to try to do my best for God because he is so compassionate despite how many times we sin and we turn away and we don't do the things we are supposed to do.
00:08:41
Speaker
and God sends ah discipline. for his people by allowing the king of Aram to overcome them and to rule over them. But he has a limit as to how far he is he goes.
00:08:57
Speaker
And when these people call for every single time, he he responds to them. Our God is so compassionate. That is going to be our daily application today, as well as to be inspired to do what we can to remember that even though we may do what is right for a period of time, we want to look at the kings that we see like in Judah.
00:09:26
Speaker
Today we saw that King Amaziah was at first doing well. He was a good king. But then we saw that he was led astray and he brought home false gods and he started worshiping them.
00:09:41
Speaker
And it was really interesting to see that he obeyed the prophet when he was paying Israelite men to fight for him. And the prophet came and said, don't do that because God is against Israel right now.
00:09:56
Speaker
And if you hire them and keep them and they fight with you, you will lose. But and he said, well what about the money I've spent and paid them? And the prophet said, don't worry about that.
00:10:07
Speaker
God can give you more than what you paid them. So he released them and sent them home. It does not say that he took the money back because he was concerned about that money and the priest, of the prophet told him not to worry about it.
00:10:21
Speaker
So these men were very spiteful instead of just taking their money and being happy and and going, they came and and looted. And fought against Judah and so we see their bad behavior there, but we see what that Amaziah obeyed and he did what the prophet told him to do that God was telling him to do.
00:10:44
Speaker
And then we see that he won the battle that he went to go fight, even though there were many more people got one. and that's And the prophet told him, it is God who is in charge of whether you win or lose.
00:10:57
Speaker
And so sure enough, he had become proud. So we want to be mindful that when we have success, that we not become proud. And that we not allow that to...
00:11:11
Speaker
cause us ah to sin later on. And later on, he was so proud that it says God used that against him and allowed him to be brought down before Israel.
00:11:23
Speaker
So then he was sending a ah nasty message to Israel and telling him, come on out and fight. And Israel said, you're just very proud because you want a battle and you just need to stay home.
00:11:36
Speaker
And he said, no, he wanted to fight. And then Israel took all of the riches out of the palace, all of the riches out of the worship house. And that was a terrible thing to do.
00:11:48
Speaker
But he was getting back at the arrogance of ah King Amaziah there. And we see this fighting going on back and forth where they are sinning against each other, against God.
00:12:01
Speaker
And despite that fact, we see that God will still end up having compassion and love for his people. But we want to remember not to let our successes make us proud and like it did with King Amaziah.
00:12:18
Speaker
ah So that is our big application today for daily application is that we see the pride that was that was in King Amaziah. when he won.
00:12:30
Speaker
And then we see that he did not obey the prophet later on when he took those idols home and began worshiping them. God sent him a prophet. God was so compassionate. He warned him. and He said, why are you doing this? you could Those idols couldn't even save the people from you.
00:12:47
Speaker
How are they going to do anything for you? And he told the prophet to hush, who told you? You could tell me what to do.
00:12:56
Speaker
When God gives us a message and convicts us, it's not the time to be arrogant and say, I can do whatever I want. He just was so prideful.
00:13:08
Speaker
Even though he had done well, he had done good things and he had behaved well in the beginning. He was resting on his laurels. He would become very proud. And so we want to examine ourselves that in our success, even though we may have times of great faithfulness to God, it does not mean that we will always be that way.

Encouragement for Humility and Reflection

00:13:30
Speaker
We need to make sure that we don't take it for granted that we have favor with God and that he will just
00:13:40
Speaker
Be ever compassionate and and not worry about the things that we are doing. Because God will discipline us as we see here with King Amaziah. He was thinking, you know, I'm favored kind of an attitude. I'm better than everybody.
00:13:55
Speaker
Even though he had done well, he was now sinning and sinning badly. So we want to be sure that we become mindful of of our behavior in our successes, to not allow it to cause us to sin and to become proud so that we no longer think we need to listen to God or to do something, because that is definitely not the type of behavior God wants to see from us.
00:14:22
Speaker
and's but And it's not very honoring or respectful to God. He does so much for us. And while we cannot repay him for it or earn our salvation or anything like that.
00:14:34
Speaker
We need to be mindful of making God the most important one in our lives. Not because we have to, but because we choose to and because we want to.
00:14:46
Speaker
Because he is so wonderful to us. Why wouldn't we want to do that? So that is our daily application today. So thank you for joining me today.
00:14:57
Speaker
And I hope that you feel that God has lit your light. And if you do, then please remember to click that light button at the end, that thumbs up or that heart. But that's really a light button.
00:15:09
Speaker
And if you know somebody who could benefit from hearing these Bible readings, please forward it to them, share it with them. And together we will spread the word about reading God's word, which has so much daily application for us every single day.
00:15:24
Speaker
There are so many things we could learn. is It's hard to pick just one sometimes. there are so There is so much in these stories that we are reading about in God's Bible. it's It can be hard for ah to pick just one.
00:15:39
Speaker
but ah and And you may found something else in each day's reading too, where you say, wow, I really got this out of it. And that's the beautiful thing about God's word is that he can convict our own hearts on and whatever it is that we have going on in our own personal lives.
00:15:56
Speaker
And so if you feel that somebody could benefit from that, share that event, share this event with them. Thank you very much for listening or watching. And I will be here for every everyone again tomorrow.
00:16:07
Speaker
I hope you have a great rest of your day.
