Podcast Introduction

00:00:08
Richard
Welcome to the Bravo Charlie Club, making you 12 and a half minutes more awesome each week. He's Ben, I'm Richard. Let's go. Ben, are you doing this week?
00:00:18
Ben
This week, mate, this year. Happy New Year. It's January 1st.
00:00:21
Richard
This year, that's right. Happy New Year. It's
00:00:24
Ben
Yeah. Yeah. Happy New Year, mate. There you go. ah yeah Have you had a good Christmas break?
00:00:29
Richard
fantastic.
00:00:30
Ben
Yeah.
00:00:30
Richard
It's always great. Very, a lot of chillaxing going on.
00:00:33
Ben
Bit of downtime.
00:00:34
Richard
How about yourself?
00:00:35
Ben
Yeah, no, enjoying it and and still got plenty to go. so I'm looking forward to the start of 2026 and everything it brings, everything it brings.
00:00:41
Richard
Nice.
00:00:44
Ben
Hey, mate, new listener country call out. Netherlands have joined us.

Welcome New Listener from Netherlands

00:00:49
Ben
So that's Kudu Middak. ah Pretty sure I've got that.
00:00:53
Richard
Say it again. How does that go?
00:00:54
Ben
and Kudu Middak.
00:00:56
Richard
Nice.
00:00:57
Ben
Pretty sure that's exactly right.
00:00:57
Richard
Nice. da dark That's my only Dutch.
00:00:58
Ben
Yeah.
00:01:00
Richard
And Dankabel.
00:01:00
Ben
Yeah. Yeah. So...
00:01:02
Richard
I'm tapped out. Yeah.
00:01:03
Ben
Welcome to our Dutch friends. I'm pretty sure it's just one person, actually. The the gentleman who binge listened to like 25 episodes in 48 hours.
00:01:11
Richard
Yes.
00:01:14
Ben
So yeah, massive call out to Netherlands. Thanks for joining us. Hey, mate, the Fully Awake Project, it is New Year.

Thematic Goals vs. New Year's Resolutions

00:01:22
Ben
Are you a New Year's resolution kind of guy?
00:01:26
Richard
um I'm not New Year's resolution guy. so I do, well, you know, like I like to kind of have I like to have a theme and,
00:01:31
Ben
What does that mean?
00:01:40
Richard
and a goal, so which I guess is kind of like a resolution.
00:01:42
Ben
Yeah.
00:01:45
Richard
But i yeah have been down the gym membership resolution path a few times with our success.
00:01:45
Ben
Yeah.
00:01:54
Ben
Okay, so talk to me about that because oh
00:01:56
Richard
ah They're pretty close yeah pretty closely coupled.
00:01:57
Ben
obviously Obviously, the New Year's resolutions and gym memberships are ah tied hand hand and fist.
00:02:06
Richard
I think it's a yeah ah big one for the sector.
00:02:09
Ben
Yeah.
00:02:09
Richard
but Um, yeah, it's, it's probably, yeah, i guess for me it's, uh, yeah. Um, I've, I've, I've not had, well, would you say not success?
00:02:24
Richard
Uh, yeah, probably. I mean, guess seeing as I stopped going and I buy the year's membership on sale, um,
00:02:25
Ben
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. i once I once bought a three-month membership, which was only 10 passes, and it was valid for three months. And I went the first day and then the last nine days of the three-month period.
00:02:44
Ben
So it doesn't work. Look, my wife has told me if I need to make a change I'm led to believe there are changes to be made um that I should just do them straight away.
00:02:56
Ben
ah But annually, I'm like you and and know we've we've known each other a long time. I like to follow a theme. Let me tell you my theme for this year, mate.

Theme of the Year: Positive Self-Talk

00:03:05
Ben
You must talk to yourself, not listen to yourself.
00:03:10
Ben
Now, let me put that into context for you.
00:03:10
Richard
yeah okay
00:03:12
Ben
um Right now, if I listen to myself, I would consider myself an old man in an old person's body. You know, I've been in multiple um surgery rooms in the in the last 18 months and I'm feeling a little bit broken. So if I listen to ah to to that, that's that's who I would become. But if I talk to myself, I very easily can also remind myself that I've you done an Ironman triathlon. I've cycled up Mont Ventoux. I was slightly slower than Lance Armstrong, but I still got there.
00:03:44
Ben
um And yeah, yeah.
00:03:45
Richard
Hey, well, he was cheating, as we found out.
00:03:47
Ben
So basically, where you I beat him.
00:03:49
Richard
So doesn't count.
00:03:51
Ben
Yeah.
00:03:51
Richard
Yeah. Thank you.
00:03:52
Ben
So, but but, you know, if you talk to yourself in that positive self-talk, then, you know, that's, so that's my theme for this year. i want to get back to playing golf. I want to want to do some more travel.
00:04:03
Ben
And we do a lot of travel already for work, but I want to do some travel with with my wife and I'm looking forward to that. So, yeah, that's the theme I'm running with. You must talk to yourself, not listen to yourself.
00:04:14
Richard
Nice. I like it. I like it. Yeah.
00:04:17
Ben
So, yeah. And speaking of travel, if you're if you're not going to tell me what your theme yourself is.
00:04:24
Richard
Well, no, no, I i do have, i do have a theme. So like, ah but it's, but it's really, it's based around more around micro resolutions.
00:04:27
Ben
oh Okay.
00:04:32
Richard
So, you know, because of course I'm being an IT guy, you but I break things down into,
00:04:33
Ben
Yeah.
00:04:40
Richard
sprints or sort of cycles. Yeah, I know, right?
00:04:40
Ben
Into sprints, yeah.
00:04:41
Ben
Of course you do.
00:04:42
Richard
Of course I do. It's just, as it becomes a habit.
00:04:44
Ben
Oh, God, so predictable.
00:04:45
Richard
So it's ah so predictable. Four weeks or kind of eight weeks, and then I'll i'll sort of give myself that ah that time to sort of reframe a habit or to make a change.
00:04:48
Ben
Yeah.
00:04:51
Ben
Yeah.
00:04:57
Richard
And so, yeah, that's...
00:05:00
Ben
You can do that ah socially as well. I actually talked to my girls about this recently where, um you know, the the whole have one major goal for the year and and six micro goals for the year.
00:05:12
Ben
And, you know, so yeah, Jesse, it's like, yeah,
00:05:12
Richard
Oh, yeah, yeah, the Jesse Itzler. Yeah, yeah, yeah. What a legend, eh?
00:05:16
Ben
I can't remember if we've discussed that on this podcast, but I just i just love the idea of having one really big thing to look look forward to always and then, you know, six, you know, so once every eight or nine weeks, have something to look forward to on a micro level as well.
00:05:17
Richard
Yeah, awesome. I'm not sure.
00:05:24
Richard
Hmm.
00:05:31
Ben
And and my girls have embraced that, which is really cool. I'm very proud of the way that they've sort of started to think about that. And I think, you know sets you up for a pretty cool life, right? you if If you're...
00:05:41
Richard
Definitely, definitely. You accumulate all these mega things, right? And you look back on it and you're like, wow, it's this and I did that and I did like, yeah, yep.
00:05:44
Ben
Yeah. Wow, look at what I did. Yeah. Yeah. So that's pretty

Travel Tip: Government Websites

00:05:50
Ben
cool. Hey, mate, travel tip, travel tip.
00:05:50
Richard
Very cool.
00:05:52
Ben
we start We're kicking off the year with it with a reminder to folks. um Government travel websites, I think they're well worth a look. You the traveling and and, you know, the political environment is is ever changing.
00:06:05
Richard
Mm.
00:06:05
Ben
And so the I think the basic government travel websites in Australia, that's smarttraveller.gov.au.
00:06:12
Ben
UK, head to gov.uk. In the States, it'll be travel.state.gov. You know, that's just to name a couple. There's a wealth of information there. It's always well worth a quick look before you you start to make your plans.
00:06:24
Richard
Yep.
00:06:26
Ben
um You got any travel tips to kick off the year with?
00:06:26
Richard
Definitely. Oh, I do actually, you know, i came back from Melbourne last week and the the sort of call out on the power banks is is is in force now.
00:06:39
Ben
Oh yeah. Power banks. Yeah.
00:06:41
Richard
Yeah, they're therefore they're voicing it over, you know, as you um as you come on on the plane and you're sort of seated and and things like that. So, yeah.
00:06:52
Richard
just probably easier to make sure you don't travel with it.
00:06:56
Ben
Yeah, just not have one. You know, 28 million people have flown, you know, in the last few weeks and and five power banks have caught on fire.
00:06:57
Richard
Let's not have one. Yeah.
00:07:03
Ben
So it's best that we all just...
00:07:05
Richard
I know, right.
00:07:08
Ben
yeah Yeah, good point. Good point. Hey, mate, also don't let frequent flyer points get you down. You should have a plan for them. um
00:07:17
Richard
Yes.
00:07:18
Ben
I think if you're not consolidating to one or or two preferred providers, you know, it's probably start to time to start thinking about those and and and also have a way to use them. um and And there are also credit cards which allow allow you to disperse to multiple um you know ah providers.
00:07:36
Ben
So I think, yeah, yeah yeah and and as you as you know, the the points to take a flight does go up.
00:07:38
Richard
Don't let them write. It's free flights astray. goingtray
00:07:47
Ben
There is inflation. It's not common. um But it did happen this year. So, you know, if it were to happen again in the next one to two years, those points that are in your account are slightly less valuable.
00:07:59
Ben
So jump all over. it or in fact, there was one massive devaluation with the Amex conversion to some of the big big players.
00:08:05
Richard
And
00:08:08
Ben
Australia's domestic carriers weren't affected, but they will be next time. So, yeah, have a think about that. Have a think about that.
00:08:14
Richard
I think it's got to happen too, right? Because the just the the points just get stockpiled with Amex.
00:08:16
Ben
Yeah.
00:08:19
Richard
So you've just you just they just kind of keep going out there.
00:08:20
Ben
Yeah. Yeah.
00:08:23
Ben
Yeah, plan a trip and and enjoy them. Yeah, you've earned them.

Discount on Data Blockers

00:08:27
Ben
Hey, listener feedback. the um a A few episodes ago, we talked about data blockers. And um ah a guy who makes them is actually listening and wrote in with an offer for BCC listeners.
00:08:33
Richard
Hmm.
00:08:40
Richard
Fantastic.
00:08:41
Ben
Yeah, so it actually so it was episode 27 we were discussing how they worked.
00:08:41
Richard
Nice. Yeah.
00:08:45
Ben
and And they heard it. And so they've offered the first 10 listeners to who head over to securitybase.com.au and Use BCC 15 off and they'll get 15% off their entire purchase.
00:08:57
Ben
Now, that is actually the data blocker that I use. And there's no there's no other incentive other than the listeners to to get something going. We're not we're not in that sponsorship sponsorship phase of of the podcast as yet.
00:09:12
Richard
Yet, yet been.
00:09:12
Ben
it It's a... Yeah, it's it was just a genuine offer from ah from a listener who who has that. So check it out, securitybase.com.au. We'll drop those codes into the show notes again.
00:09:23
Richard
Fantastic.
00:09:25
Ben
Hey, I want to talk to you about speaking um and of of being safe and secure.

Outdated Security Practices

00:09:30
Ben
When my girls turned 18, they had a small share portfolio which we held as trustees for them.
00:09:36
Richard
Hmm.
00:09:37
Ben
And it rolled rolled into their name. Have a listen to this. Part of the setup process was that the company would share multi-factor authentication. Now, this is ah kids just turning 18, so they're fully in the Gen Z millennial, you know sort of playbook.
00:09:53
Ben
The multi-factor authentication code was posted to them in the mail. but
00:09:59
Richard
What?
00:10:00
Ben
like exactly yeah
00:10:01
Richard
What? So how does it even work? So here's your code. Go to a website, type this in and we'll believe that that we'll believe that you're you.
00:10:07
Ben
ah it was posted to them I'm like surely i how to use it yeah
00:10:12
Richard
Along with instructions on how to use, presumably. Oh, that is crazy.
00:10:18
Ben
So what is going on like with all the digital prowess that we have that have resorted to mailing out an MFO?
00:10:19
Richard
oh
00:10:26
Richard
That's how you're going to go. oh
00:10:28
Ben
So that's true multi-factor authentication. We're not we're using digital on one hand and analog on another one.

Spotify Wrapped Recognition

00:10:35
Ben
So, yeah, if you've got any feedback like that, guys, leave a comment, send us a text, join the Inner Sanctum, which is there's a fair bit of fun happening in there.
00:10:44
Ben
We've been rated in the top five in in a few people's Spotify um playlists. So you know how Spotify do that rap um and and and tell you you know tell you what you look forward to.
00:10:53
Richard
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:10:56
Ben
a few people have sent through images of the fact that Bravo Charlie Club was in their top five, including the number one position for one listener. And and full full disclosure, it wasn't me.
00:11:08
Ben
So, in fact in fact, Bravo Charlie Club wasn't even my number one Spotify position. I think it's on minutes.
00:11:19
Ben
So we're holding ourselves back. We're only doing a 12 and a half minute. um
00:11:23
Richard
Oh, yeah, yeah, those long play guys.
00:11:24
Ben
Yeah.
00:11:24
Richard
Yeah.
00:11:25
Ben
Yeah, there you go.
00:11:25
Richard
and
00:11:26
Ben
Hey, Richard, conundrum of the week, mate. If something is neither underwhelming or overwhelming, what is it? Are you just whelmed?
00:11:35
Richard
You are just whelmed. I think it's i think that's the only logic called middle ground between under and over, isn't it?
00:11:39
Ben
six
00:11:43
Richard
um Yeah, I think it's like the there's an under one and there's an over one. that's there's Or is the middle of the road just nothing because it's not, It's not under or over.
00:11:52
Ben
It's...
00:11:53
Richard
It's just, at in you're just, it's neutral.
00:11:54
Ben
It's very average.
00:11:56
Richard
these You're just, no middle, i don't know, whelmed. I'm gonna use it. I'm whelmed.
00:12:02
Ben
You're whelmed.
00:12:03
Richard
I'm whelmed by that.
00:12:04
Ben
How are you going, Richard?
00:12:06
Richard
Whelmed, I'm whelmed.
00:12:07
Ben
you know Okay.
00:12:08
Richard
No, an no, no.
00:12:08
Ben
Is it like that? No, it doesn't work.
00:12:10
Richard
Look under or over. It's like it's like when when it's like your ability to capture or process information. are you Underwhelmed, you know, it's didn't deliver.
00:12:24
Richard
Overwhelmed, it's too intense, too much.
00:12:26
Ben
I think this has got this has got back of the knee vibes for me.
00:12:26
Richard
Well, I don't know.
00:12:31
Richard
ah love it. Back of the knee.
00:12:32
Ben
No. You know, when, like, because there's not a medical term for the back of the knee.
00:12:33
Richard
Yeah, it doesn't have a thing, does it? It's not a thing.
00:12:37
Ben
It's like they've just said, that's it's just nothing. We're not naming it. it's
00:12:40
Richard
Yeah.
00:12:41
Ben
So that I reckon the space between underwhelmed and overwhelmed, is you just don't name it.
00:12:45
Richard
Back of the knee.
00:12:45
Ben
You're not, yeah, it's not whelmed.
00:12:46
Richard
Like a computer triangle.
00:12:48
Richard
It's just like, yeah.
00:12:48
Ben
Yeah, yeah.
00:12:50
Richard
Nice.
00:12:50
Ben
we're not We're not doing it.
00:12:51
Ben
We're leaving it alone. Hey, that's it, Richard. Listeners, have been BC Cinema Week. In next week's show, going to ask, what's the weirdest thing that you've ever seen for sale?
00:13:03
Ben
See you next week. Bravo, Charlie Club, out.
00:13:06
Richard
the part.
