Introduction to the Bravo Charlie Club Podcast

00:00:05
Richard
Welcome to the Bravo Charlie Club podcast, making you 12 and a half minutes more awesome each week. He's Ben, I'm Richard, let's go. ben how are you doing this week?
00:00:16
Ben
I'm well mate, you sound a bit tired, you all right?
00:00:19
Richard
I'm a bit tired, but I'm pushing through.
00:00:22
Ben
Pushing through, you're pulling
00:00:25
Richard
An all-dayer, yes, I'm pulling an all-dayer. I could have done with the afternoon nap today, but no, hardening up, pushing through.

International Audience and Greetings

00:00:33
Ben
remember when we were young and we used to pull all nighters and now we're older, we pull all dayers.
00:00:36
Richard
so
00:00:40
Ben
Hey, mate, new listener country call out, Lithuania have joined us.
00:00:40
Richard
yeah
00:00:44
Ben
So that's La Bus, La Bus as a greeting for our Lithuanian friends.
00:00:49
Richard
A bust. A bust.
00:00:50
Ben
Yeah, which sounds like a ah French transport vehicle, but it's not.
00:00:51
Richard
Excellent.
00:00:55
Richard
ah da
00:00:58
Ben
i In the Fully Awake project this week, I wanted to ask you your a question. Have you ever been added to a mailing list and you are like, not really sure how that happened, but hey, that was really cool. I love this content.
00:01:11
Richard
I can't say that's ever happened to me.
00:01:13
Ben
Yeah.
00:01:13
Richard
always some junky thing that you can never work out how to get rid of.
00:01:15
Ben
you Me either. Yeah.
00:01:18
Richard
And you try you try using all the all the tools to stop spamming me and you unsubscribe and use all the auto things, filter, i put it in the blacklist, throw it away.
00:01:24
Ben
Yeah.
00:01:28
Richard
It still comes back.
00:01:29
Ben
Yeah.
00:01:29
Richard
It's just Celeste 3 days later that sent me another one.
00:01:30
Ben
yeah
00:01:32
Richard
How does that happen?
00:01:32
Ben
Every now and then every now and then i'll ask them, I'll be like, can you just let me know how I ended up on this list? um And rarely you get a response, except for real real estate agents, actually.
00:01:41
Richard
No reply.
00:01:44
Richard
Oh yes.
00:01:44
Ben
They almost get offended.
00:01:45
Richard
Yeah. Yeah.
00:01:46
Ben
I think there's some sort of legal requirement for them to keep a ah clean database. So um I do tend to get responses from them if I can be bothered. But, um yeah, i was just I was just curious because, gee, I seem to hit unsubscribe a lot these days.
00:02:03
Richard
yeah
00:02:04
Ben
Okay, so a second question under the Fully Awake project. What do you like at spelling on message chats? And so do you send first and then correct it later or do you do a double check before, you like if you're sending a WhatsApp or a message or a message?
00:02:20
Richard
Yeah, it's a it's a it's a good one. i am send first, correct later, but i but there's generally generally i'd try and sort of do a yeah a sense check if it's if it's a decent length message because I've almost i've always always made a mistake, right?
00:02:26
Ben
Yep.
00:02:35
Ben
Yeah, fair.
00:02:38
Richard
And and usually the the bad ones are when you like leave out the not or it autocorrects into something unintelligible and you kind of like got, you know,
00:02:39
Ben
Oh, certainly.
00:02:47
Ben
Yeah.
00:02:50
Richard
message doesn't make any sense at all. um Yeah.
00:02:52
Ben
So, with which, which,
00:02:54
Richard
Or sometimes it autocorrects to the exact opposite of what you, you meant. Right.
00:02:57
Ben
yeah, fail.
00:02:58
Richard
And you can total fail.
00:02:59
Ben
Yeah.
00:03:01
Richard
Yeah. Yeah.
00:03:01
Ben
Yeah, so i'm I'm definitely with you. I'm a send first, correct later. Although I've become a little more aware. And I'll tell you what happened. i was um I was in Singapore and I'd ordered a Grab, um which is their version of Uber for those who haven't heard of Grab.
00:03:19
Ben
um but the The door, Changi Airport's massive, as you know, but the the door where I was waiting, there was actually a lot of people. um
00:03:28
Richard
Thank you.
00:03:29
Ben
there. And so i thought, well, I'll help my guy out and I'll send him a message so he can identify me. And so I

Humorous Anecdotes from Ben and Richard

00:03:36
Ben
sent him a message. as I wrote tall, bald guy in Hawaiian shirt.
00:03:40
Ben
um Anyway, this car eventually pulls up, you know, the number of plate checks out and he winds down the window and he goes, how you been? i was like, yeah, yeah, thanks for grabbing me. He goes, well, I nearly didn't grab you.
00:03:54
Ben
was like, oh, Oh, okay. um Well, can you tell me why? and He goes, well, your message to me just seemed a bit weird, to be honest. And I was like, oh, okay. um All right. No worries. Anyway, so I loaded the bags and jumped in the car.
00:04:12
Ben
And I pulled out the message. i was like, okay, what's going on here? And I realized that I'd written tall bad guy in hawaiian shirt
00:04:24
Ben
i like And I just started laughing.
00:04:24
Richard
ah
00:04:25
Ben
He goes, you get it now? and I was like, yeah, it sounds like something out of a movie. He goes, yeah, a really bad movie. I was oh, well, good on him for picking me up. So he had my money.
00:04:35
Richard
Awesome. Yeah, yeah. You got there in the end anyway.
00:04:37
Ben
So i did get there. bring That brings us on the travel tips, mate. Now, last week you started to tell us a selfie stick story and we went down one channel, but you said there was a selfie stick story for another time.
00:04:51
Richard
There is.
00:04:51
Ben
um
00:04:52
Richard
There is more to that story.
00:04:52
Ben
So go on, let's have it. Let's hear it.
00:04:54
Richard
but So it's the um it's the the acquisition of the selfie stick, right? So you're you're in you're in Rome and you're heading to, i think we were heading to the Colosseum
00:05:04
Richard
about... 20-minute walk away as you approach there, the the more touts and people trying to sell you things that you don't need kind of increases, right, till you get to the point where you're kind of like out the front of the place and and they're everywhere.
00:05:18
Richard
The police are chasing them away, it's like sharks going through a school of fish and the fish just kind of like swarm out of the way and then kind of like come in back behind them.
00:05:28
Ben
Gotcha.
00:05:29
Richard
afterwards anyway and so we ah we passed a whole bunch of shops selling selfie sticks and we got there and you know i felt like an absolute genius bargaining this guy down from the 22 euro he's asked to seven to seven ben that is that is some expert level haggling i thought um
00:05:45
Ben
Whoa, third of the price. It's incredible.
00:05:50
Ben
Think of all the pizza you can get with the 15 euros.
00:05:52
Richard
Yeah, until exactly, until I, 45 minutes later, the crappy selfie stick jammed and then sent hundreds of messages in my iCloud, as we discussed last week.
00:06:05
Richard
And also walking past um those stores that I did not buy the selfie stick at on the way home, seeing that they were three pounds, three you three euro In the store.
00:06:05
Ben
Yep.
00:06:12
Ben
Yep. Oh. Oh.
00:06:17
Richard
So these could buy selfie sticks and reselling them out the front of the Coliseum.
00:06:20
Ben
Yes.
00:06:22
Ben
So. Yeah.
00:06:23
Richard
And I'm like, oh, no, it was not a good deal in the end. So you're like, you you feel so good. Then you're like, oh, dear, I got scared.
00:06:30
Ben
Yeah. so he's And he's got a continuous supply as well, hasn't He just goes and buys two or three.
00:06:32
Richard
anyway
00:06:35
Richard
I know, right? Yeah, it probably even works for one of those shops.
00:06:38
Ben
Yeah.
00:06:38
Richard
Who knows? I mean, yeah, they probably buy them.
00:06:39
Ben
Yeah. Or
00:06:40
Richard
Like if they're selling them for three euro, what are they buying them for? 150 or something?
00:06:44
Ben
one, I guess. Yeah.
00:06:46
Richard
know.
00:06:47
Ben
Oh, that's cool. Good story.
00:06:49
Richard
Yeah, the selfie stick story.
00:06:49
Ben
I like it. i like it.
00:06:51
Richard
Yeah.
00:06:52
Ben
Hey, mate, listen

The Value of Advice

00:06:53
Ben
to feedback. with With listeners joining us all the time, um it obviously makes sense that some are starting at the start. And um we've actually had feedback from way back when we started. Do you remember I was asking if a friend doesn't take your advice, yeah can you get upset?
00:07:09
Richard
Yes. ye Yeah, yeah.
00:07:10
Ben
That was like, I don't know if was episode one, but it was really early, right?
00:07:13
Richard
like in the early days. yeah Yeah, I think it's right.
00:07:16
Ben
Listen to KM has told us that being asked for advice is a badge of honour. Taking the advice, yeah, taking the advice is optional. So it's a really nice point. Also being on the side where he'd given someone advice and it was ignored.
00:07:31
Ben
um But that was a good friend um and i was gracious and, you know, I didn't want to make them feel and feel more ordinary. So there you go, a nice nice little take to remind us of some of the topics that we've been talking about.
00:07:41
Richard
Yeah.
00:07:46
Ben
um Best thing you ever, got some feedback.
00:07:47
Richard
Nice.
00:07:49
Ben
Listener CG wrote in and told us it was dogs that are the best thing ever. Where where you where are you at on that?
00:07:54
Richard
Dogs. Nice. Yeah. I'm on board the dog train. Love it.
00:07:59
Ben
Yeah.
00:07:59
Richard
Yep.
00:08:00
Ben
Okay, you surprised me because you've told me some lesson less than favourable dogs.
00:08:02
Richard
It took a while. It took a while. i think. The puppy stage was really hard, Ben. The puppy stage is like ah feels like it's going to go on forever.
00:08:09
Ben
Yeah.
00:08:13
Richard
But once you kind of get through that, it's actually yeah it's actually pretty good. So, yeah, ah've I've come around.
00:08:17
Ben
All right. Hey, and what constitutes a sport ah topic?

What Defines a Sport?

00:08:23
Ben
Listener AT shared to me an article about an e-sport athlete, and I've used that word in the loosest possible form, um who got South Korea's highest sporting honour.
00:08:36
Ben
Now, is it?
00:08:37
Richard
That is awesome. I love it Yeah, esports.
00:08:40
Ben
Talk us through it.
00:08:41
Richard
I love esports. Esports is fantastic. I mean, do you count Swift as esports? Like if I'm cycling on a on a trainer in a computer in a virtual world, is that would be esports, wouldn't it?
00:08:49
Ben
I don't know Swift is. Right. Oh.
00:08:54
Richard
I mean, I like to think of myself as an esports athlete. Don't break my bubble.
00:08:57
Ben
Oh yeah.
00:08:59
Richard
Don't ruin my identity here, Ben.
00:08:59
Ben
um
00:09:01
Richard
But, ah yeah.
00:09:02
Ben
I'm clearing, I'm clearly talking to the wrong person about, I'm way off base.
00:09:06
Richard
that yeah
00:09:07
Ben
Come on.
00:09:08
Richard
Australia has a professional e-sports ah esports league, and those guys those guys train like theyre like they like they're athletes.
00:09:13
Ben
No, we don't.
00:09:15
Richard
They have nutrition coaches and they have, you know, ah physical coaches in the gym doing workouts and, know, 10 hours a day.
00:09:16
Ben
Oh no.
00:09:21
Ben
nutrition coach is what, it three bags of CC and four cans of Red Bull,
00:09:25
Richard
I'm going to be about to cut that down to two bags of cc's today and have a high-protein meal. Yeah.
00:09:32
Ben
Oh, my goodness. Okay. All right. Look, why not leave a comment if you'd want to tell us if you think esports is a sport. I'd love to hear it. We do we always look forward to feedback from our our listeners. Send us a text. Links are in the show notes. Join the inner sanctum. I did post a picture of of who I thought was Richard in his Uniqlo white T-shirt the other day.
00:09:53
Ben
um All right. Conundra of the week, mate.

Restaurant Gripes and Tips

00:09:57
Ben
Why aren't restaurant menu fonts bigger? Yeah. Old people have money, right?
00:10:03
Richard
Yep.
00:10:04
Ben
We can afford to eat out. And also, why are restaurants getting darker? Like, for anyone who owns a restaurant, turn your lights on.
00:10:15
Ben
You'll sell more if I can read the damn menu. Like, what what what's your thoughts on this?
00:10:22
Richard
It's true. It's true. they um they the the The fonts do seem to be getting smaller and the poor choice of font too. Don't don't pick that cursive one that you you can't tell if it's broccoli or barramundi, right?
00:10:34
Ben
Really? Specifically breakfast?
00:10:36
Richard
You know, like like it's on front of my eating.
00:10:36
Ben
Oh, fake call.
00:10:38
Richard
I can't tell, you know. um particularly breakfast menu fonts too, but probably ah cafe ones.
00:10:44
Ben
really specifically breakfast
00:10:47
Richard
I thought cafe ones tend to be worse than restaurant ones.
00:10:50
Ben
ah faco
00:10:50
Richard
Maybe it's just because I'm oh i'm more of a breakfast person really. So that's that's my favourite eat-out meal of the day.
00:10:53
Ben
Yeah, okay. Yeah, I'll keep my eye out on that.
00:10:57
Richard
So, yeah.
00:10:58
Ben
Yeah, interesting. But like, I just, you know, when you have to pull out your iPhone or or Android phone and use the torch function to read the menu, you know, i believe, that the price is going to be exponentially higher than you should actually have to pay.
00:11:01
Richard
It's...
00:11:16
Richard
So here's my Clipper hack there, Ben.
00:11:16
Ben
Like, okay.
00:11:17
Richard
I actually take the picture.
00:11:18
Ben
Yeah.
00:11:19
Richard
I take the picture and I zoom it up after I've taken the picture to see what the item I'm buying is.
00:11:26
Ben
Okay.
00:11:27
Richard
So,
00:11:27
Ben
What I've actually committed to.
00:11:29
Richard
yeah
00:11:30
Ben
I like that.
00:11:30
Richard
yeah, yeah. I don't know if it helps.
00:11:32
Ben
I like that. That's the it's a good hack.
00:11:33
Richard
mean, I guess it help makes it legible. can take a while to read a menu, though.
00:11:35
Ben
That's a life hack.
00:11:37
Richard
like that.
00:11:38
Ben
That's a life hack. that We might even be bringing a new segment in, mate. I like that. but That's it, Richard.
00:11:43
Richard
i like
00:11:43
Ben
Listeners have been BCC'd on our week. In next week's show, we ask if we should take gap years. See you next week. Bravo, Charlie Club, out.
00:11:54
Richard
And that's the pod.
