Introduction to Bravo Charlie Club

00:00:07
Richard
Welcome to the Bravo Charlie Club podcast, making you 12 and a half minutes more awesome each week. He's Ben, I'm Richard, let's go. ben how are you doing this week?
00:00:17
Ben
I'm awesome, mate. Big welcome from you. What was that all about? You really loaded up on that.
00:00:21
Richard
Yeah, I'm leaning in, I'm leaning in.
00:00:23
Ben
Yeah.
00:00:24
Richard
think it's this new mic position I'm going for better audio.
00:00:24
Ben
but the I like it.
00:00:26
Richard
So like, it yeah, it's bringing the energy.
00:00:27
Ben
we got we We got some listener feedback about that. That'll come up soon, actually.

Global Audience and Accents

00:00:32
Ben
A new listener country call-out this week is Ireland. So we get to practice our Irish Gaelic accents.
00:00:39
Richard
are
00:00:42
Ben
We'll run with G.R. Kwech, which is definitely not correct, but I'm not going to try it again. LAUGHTER
00:00:49
Richard
and if Welcome Island.
00:00:52
Ben
My show notes say use a throaty GH. And yeah, let's just leave it with welcome to our Gaelic listeners. 61 countries now, mate. We've still got a few in the in the kit bag to to call out.
00:01:01
Richard
Woo. Yeah.
00:01:05
Ben
22% of BCC listeners live outside Australia. Now, I assumed when we were going to start this that it would just be our friends who we sent the link to that would listen to it.
00:01:09
Richard
we go
00:01:17
Ben
And even then, most of them would probably stop listening after three or four episodes. So,
00:01:22
Richard
what is a courteous what is a courteous number of podcasts to listen to for your if your friends are making a podcast like is it is it three is it is so so yeah probably yep
00:01:23
Ben
yeah. Yeah.
00:01:29
Ben
And there's there's a couple, yeah, I don't know. I don't know what this is. Twelve and a half minutes isn't a massive commitment. I think that's probably what's kept us alive in some respects. So, yeah, we' better we better stick to our guns.

Volunteering: Perspectives and Experiences

00:01:42
Ben
hey Fully Awake project this this this week, mate. Are there less volunteers in the world or even like in Australia? Like what's your opinion on volunteership?
00:01:54
Ben
Is it a dying art or are we are we good?
00:01:58
Richard
I don't know, actually. That's really interesting. I kind of I'm not a volunteerer unless it's a special occasion.
00:02:05
Ben
I was going to ask you about your, yeah.
00:02:07
Richard
like like a Like if there's been a a cyclone or a flood or something like that, then, you get in and you you pitch out, help out, you know, sort of pitch in.
00:02:14
Ben
Yeah, absolutely. That's, that's being human.
00:02:17
Richard
Right. but Pitch out.
00:02:18
Ben
Yeah.
00:02:18
Richard
Pitch in.
00:02:19
Ben
Yeah.
00:02:19
Richard
I mean, yeah, that's being human, right? But, yeah, I think that's probably as far as as i as I go.
00:02:28
Ben
I think, yeah.
00:02:28
Richard
i mean tend we tend to have pretty stacked weekends, right? And so, yeah.
00:02:31
Ben
Yeah. it's like Is it an age thing?
00:02:33
Richard
Yeah.
00:02:33
Ben
Like, are we not old enough to volunteer yet? Like, is some, you know, the there's a fair fair retirement, you know, cohort that that tends to dominate the volunteering sect, rightly or wrongly.
00:02:44
Richard
Yeah.
00:02:47
Richard
be old enough by the time we get the olympics right uh in queensland so uh there we go did they give you a tracksuit for that i could be in
00:02:47
Ben
I think it's probably a time thing.
00:02:50
Ben
Oh, yeah. Yeah, We can go to the go to the airport and tell people which way north and south. Yeah.
00:03:00
Ben
Oh, I'm sure they would. They'd have to. They'd have to. Olympic tracksuit.
00:03:04
Richard
yeah there you go
00:03:05
Ben
Actually, how's this for staying on top? We're talking about, you know friends who listen to your podcast. Listener BH actually sent feedback on this particular topic because we alluded to it in the teaser of episode 50. And he just he he said he wanted to know, if does volunteering include clearing the dishwasher at work or even emptying the the work bin?
00:03:28
Ben
He said, surely that's a basic format. And I'm thinking, yeah, I don't know. i don't know if that's volunteering.
00:03:34
Richard
I like it.
00:03:35
Ben
in it
00:03:35
Richard
I like it. I actually do that.
00:03:36
Ben
if
00:03:37
Richard
I'm i'm a dishwasher emptier at work.
00:03:38
Ben
Your dishwasher empty, yeah?
00:03:40
Richard
Yeah, yeah. I tend to be sort of fairly early in, so.
00:03:42
Ben
i'm i'm a dishwasher I'm a dishwasher filter cleaner. In fact, my best mate, when I visit him in Adelaide, I i generally pull apart his dishwasher for him.
00:03:48
Richard
Okay. Yep.
00:03:53
Ben
but but I'm pretty sure he does it himself as well, but I just feel like it's something that I can do that adds value. So who knows? you know my
00:04:03
Ben
My own volunteering career is a bit haphazard as well. yeah I've done seasons at the surf, you know, with Surf Lifesaving. And I did do a big stint.
00:04:11
Richard
Oh
00:04:13
Ben
I did like a 10-day camp where we were rebuilding fences for farmers that had lost their fence lines in the bushfires.
00:04:23
Ben
That was through Blaze Aid. So it's literally sleeping in swags and campfire dinner type stuff. It was pretty pretty full on.
00:04:29
Richard
yeah, cool. Actually.
00:04:31
Richard
Yeah.
00:04:31
Ben
But that's sort of that intense volunteering.
00:04:33
Ben
But I think the real volunteer goals are the guys that just show up week on week.
00:04:38
Richard
Yeah.
00:04:39
Ben
I hope it's not a dying hour. I don't think it is. But yeah when I hit the right age to be able to give that amount of time, i' I'm looking forward to it if I can.

Currency Exchange Tips for Travelers

00:04:50
Ben
Yeah,
00:04:52
Ben
Hey, on travel tips, my friend.
00:04:54
Richard
Hmm.
00:04:56
Ben
Listener MP asks, Mr. Benno, He's not the only person that cool yeah he's like's not the only person who calls me Benno.
00:05:00
Richard
Mr. Benno. There we go. it's very formal. Hmm. Hmm.
00:05:03
Ben
He's the first person to put a mister in front of it. yeah With your Wisecard, do you load it up with local currency or just have the aud d in our case and let it convert?
00:05:14
Ben
Where do you sit on that one? I've got an answer, but I'm i'm interested where you sit because you, in fact, introduced me, I think, to the Wisecard.
00:05:22
Richard
Yeah, so it's funny actually. I yeah was reading the the show notes and we have an overseas holiday coming up. So I was like, oh yeah, i must log back into WISE because it's been a few years since we lived overseas and we're using WISE all the time to transfer money to Indonesia from from Australia. And the... And so I had to go through the process of proving that you're you, where you go in and you log in with your details, then they send the passcode to your phone and you put the OTP <unk> into the to the thing.
00:05:54
Richard
And then you have to verify an email address because it's been a few years and they send you an email, then you click the link in the email and then you put another code in and then they ask if you want to set up a passkey.
00:06:02
Ben
and They make it easy.
00:06:03
Richard
So you scan your finger and then I'm like, okay, I might order a card.
00:06:04
Ben
Yeah.
00:06:07
Richard
And then they send me another code and then... so four times I had to.
00:06:10
Ben
We just like to verify, verify that it was you who we verified with.
00:06:12
Richard
I know. Yeah. Yeah. i I suppose they're happy yet. I haven't completed a process. haven't actually done anything. So maybe there'll be a few more who who knows, but yeah, I mean,
00:06:22
Ben
look, I remember when I first learned about two-factor authentication and I thought it was a massive pain and now I'm all over it. I think it's amazing.
00:06:30
Richard
yeah, yeah.
00:06:30
Ben
so so Yeah.
00:06:31
Richard
It's all built into the OSs and stuff now. So it's not, so it's not, not as much of a hassle as it used to be.
00:06:33
Ben
Yeah. Yeah. so So back on WISE, how do you use it?
00:06:37
Richard
Hmm.
00:06:37
Ben
Do you load some of the destination nation currency or what do you do?
00:06:42
Richard
So I had it all in AUD at the time and
00:06:44
Ben
Yeah.
00:06:46
Richard
and I generally get it out at cash at sort of ATMs of repute, not just any corner ATMs, and then sort of spend cash when when I'm on the ground typically.
00:06:55
Ben
Yeah.
00:06:59
Richard
You do come back with a little bundle of cash, but I like the Jason Bourne feeling of having 10 Ziploc bags.
00:07:04
Ben
You've told us about it.
00:07:05
Richard
I know, i know, I love it.
00:07:06
Ben
Yeah.
00:07:07
Richard
You can't pick the feeling bed, you know.
00:07:08
Ben
And look, as I'm looking at you in the video, it's hard to tell that I'm not looking at Jason Bourne that I'm thinking about it.
00:07:15
Richard
I bet. Yep.
00:07:18
Ben
Listen, for me, i I don't withdraw cash. Hey, like there's there's a couple of places that I go to where you do need some cash.
00:07:22
Richard
and
00:07:24
Ben
But in general, I just transfer to the local currency. And I make an estimate, like if I've got a budget for the spend, I'll put about 50% of that across. and and just and let the rest come across from aud as i spend because i think if i put my whole budget across i'm probably going to feel like i should spend it and that doesn't seem smart from a fiscal point of view so so yeah about half and especially if it's a great rate like i actually transferred the money for japan which you know we've spoken about me coming back from probably 12 months ago And ironically, whilst it was such a great rate at the time, their currency devalued even further before we actually got to the got to the trip, which is an interesting one.
00:08:05
Richard
Yeah.
00:08:12
Ben
So there you go for a listener.
00:08:12
Richard
It is so much better though using wise than a normal bank. Like it's like one and a half percent instead of four or five or even six.
00:08:16
Ben
Yes.
00:08:19
Ben
Oh, they're, yeah.
00:08:19
Richard
So like it's a banks are merciless.
00:08:21
Ben
Is it even as high as one and a half? Like, the I just found the transfer rate so negligible that it was, yeah, it was a no-brainer.
00:08:27
Richard
Yeah. Something like that I think was wise as fee.
00:08:29
Ben
Yeah.
00:08:29
Richard
Yeah.
00:08:30
Ben
Yeah, it's a no-brainer to use it. There you go. All right. Listener MP has got all

Listener Tips: Rubik's Cubes and Audio Quality

00:08:34
Ben
the details now, I reckon. Hey, yeah speaking of listeners, listener feedback we're up to First of all, thanks to all the smart aleck listeners who sent me pictures of their completed Rubik's cubes.
00:08:50
Ben
Yeah, I feel like Robinson Crusoe. basically the only person on the planet who can't solve this thing and we were talking earlier about you know mic positions and listen to ja he said it was their audio in episode 44 that was the best ever and the pro podcast tip because i went back and checked what we were doing i leaned back a bit because i was tend to sit too close to my microphone And you leaned in.
00:09:16
Ben
That was it. It was that highly technical adaptation that we made.
00:09:18
Richard
That was it. Yeah. Bouncy audio. Yeah.
00:09:22
Ben
So anyone who's recording podcasts, and we do have a couple of listeners who have their own podcasts. They probably already solved that a while back. and And we've had one more listener feedback. Listener CF had a stark realisation that the asteroid that ended the dinosaurs it was technically the highest ratio of killing birds to one stone in in Earth's history. i think there's been I think there's been used as a meme several times, but it's I love it.
00:09:53
Ben
That's a good one.
00:09:53
Richard
Still true. They do. Yeah.
00:09:55
Ben
Thanks for sharing, Listener CF. That's pretty cool.

Humor in Gym Music

00:09:58
Ben
Hey, onto the conundrum of the week, mate. Did you know that hotels have gyms?
00:10:03
Richard
yes
00:10:04
Ben
Yeah, okay.
00:10:05
Richard
they do
00:10:05
Ben
so um'm i'm quite I'm quite new to this discovery.
00:10:06
Richard
yeah
00:10:09
Ben
It must be, in is it recent? Like I've i've never been one to source gyms in hotels, but it's
00:10:14
Richard
I think you'll find them. but I think the definition of gym varies greatly to like a rack of weights locked in the basement to, yeah.
00:10:19
Ben
true. the One exercise bike. Yes.
00:10:26
Richard
I mean, I stayed at a place in Melbourne on the last trip, the one before, and they had a rooftop gym, which was awesome.
00:10:26
Ben
and I don't know that.
00:10:34
Ben
There you
00:10:34
Richard
we And, no, no.
00:10:35
Ben
Open air.
00:10:38
Richard
It was like they didn't have a room in the in the building, so they actually built another room on top of the building, which they turned into a gym.
00:10:44
Ben
Oh, interesting.
00:10:46
Richard
and it It had like full glass walls sort of overlooking overlooking a park, which is actually quite nice.
00:10:51
Ben
so Tell me you went in Melbourne.
00:10:54
Richard
Sorry?
00:10:55
Ben
Tell me you were in Melbourne.
00:10:55
Richard
No, it was Melbourne.
00:10:56
Ben
Yeah, that's that's a very Melbourne thing to do.
00:10:57
Richard
I always go to Melbourne. That is a very Melbourne thing.
00:10:59
Ben
s
00:11:00
Richard
Yeah.
00:11:01
Richard
Yeah.
00:11:01
Ben
they love They love that sort of stuff.
00:11:02
Ben
Okay, so here's the conundrum. What music should a hotel gym play? And if any, first of all, and and then is a two-minute loop of the same song acceptable?
00:11:08
Richard
Oh, yeah.
00:11:13
Ben
Because that's what I was put at, forced to injure it.
00:11:16
Richard
That is harsh. Maybe a're trying to but they're trying to not sell the gym to you.
00:11:19
Ben
okay
00:11:20
Richard
I don't know.
00:11:21
Ben
Get you out.
00:11:21
Richard
It's get you out. Yeah. Yeah, that's that's pretty harsh. mean, usually they have a couple of big screen TVs and just the remotes sitting around and you can just turn YouTube on, flick through, find something.
00:11:34
Richard
Yeah.
00:11:35
Ben
There you go. So you're you're happy just to, like, if you're the only one in there, you'll just take control. Just walk in, flick flick it off, get into it.
00:11:40
Richard
Yeah, totally.
00:11:43
Ben
I like it. As I said, I'm still learning. I've only recently discovered that I even had gyms. So I suppose you could probably Bluetooth your own phone to it as well if you got if you got really fancy.
00:11:48
Richard
yeah Yeah, probably could. Or just play it loud. Just play it through the speaker of the phone.
00:11:57
Ben
Yeah. Yeah, okay. All right. Well done.

Closing and Next Episode Preview
