Introduction to Bravo Charlie Club

00:00:07
Richard
Welcome to the Bravo Charlie Club podcast, making you 12 and a half minutes more awesome each week. He's Ben, I'm Richard. Let's go. Ben, how are you this week?
00:00:18
Ben
i'm doing I'm doing well. I'm still trying to work it out what it is that I would die for. you know i think I think I got my – I have.
00:00:26
Richard
Been pondering it all week.
00:00:29
Ben
i I haven't come up with anything different. i haven't had any listener feedback yet either. So hopefully someone saves me and and tells me exactly how how to unpack that one.
00:00:41
Ben
Hey, mate, you'd listen to Country Callout this week is Denmark. which is high. H-E-J is high, by the way.
00:00:49
Richard
High, okay.
00:00:50
Ben
Yeah. And if you're being extra friendly, you say hi, hi. So there you go.
00:00:55
Richard
That is fantastic, double high, high high.
00:00:58
Ben
I like it. I like it.

Moments of Disbelief and Historical Contexts

00:01:00
Ben
Hey, I want to jump into the Fully Awake project this week. Have you ever had a moment... where you learn something and you really? That can't be true. And like, you immediately feel like you have to check, you know, it by Googling it or whatever. But I recently watched a movie called Oppenheimer.
00:01:17
Richard
Yeah.
00:01:17
Ben
And now I'm not going to give a spoiler away, but in the very early section of the movies, well, yeah.
00:01:21
Richard
I think we all know what happens in Oppenheimer, don't we?
00:01:24
Ben
oh yeah yeah Although again, like, yeah, yeah.
00:01:26
Richard
Well, not how it happens, but broad brushstrokes, but yeah.
00:01:30
Ben
yeah have to And I didn't really understand the movie anyway. so And I'm not watching it again. it's three hours of my life. I'll never get back.
00:01:36
Richard
Yeah.

Alfred Nobel and the Nobel Peace Prize

00:01:37
Ben
But in in the movie, he drops the knowledge that Alfred Nobel invented dynamite. And I was like, wait, what?
00:01:45
Richard
yeah
00:01:46
Ben
The guy who invented the Peace Prize invented dynamite? And so i I did what we said we would never do and did some research.
00:01:52
Richard
Yes.
00:01:56
Ben
And it turns out he did.
00:01:56
Richard
Oh, man.
00:01:57
Ben
He did.
00:01:58
Richard
He did.
00:01:58
Ben
He hanging it combined nitroglycerin with an inert substance to make to make it safer.
00:01:58
Richard
did invent dynamite. Yeah.
00:02:05
Ben
And he got the nickname a Merchant of Death friend from doing this.
00:02:12
Richard
What branding? So who give out? Yeah.
00:02:15
Ben
Now, which sort of led me on this sort of garden path that was this the original, like, guerrilla marketing? Like, back in that, what, mid-1800s, he's had, like, a brand manager come up you and say, now, Alfred.
00:02:32
Richard
We're going to sales are going to go through the roof. We're calling you Merchant of Death.
00:02:35
Ben
Yeah. Yeah.
00:02:36
Richard
and so he's So he's all in for it at the start, right? Then he's like, oh no this is going to be how I'm remembered.
00:02:41
Ben
he was
00:02:42
Richard
so
00:02:42
Ben
He was deeply affected. and so he And so a second brand manager has come up to him
00:02:44
Richard
Yeah.

Imagining Historical PR Crises

00:02:49
Richard
You need the PR management campaign.
00:02:49
Ben
is
00:02:50
Richard
How are we going to get out of this one?
00:02:51
Ben
and said, he's here's what we're going to do. We're going to establish the Nobel Peace Prize for contributions to humanity. Now, is that the first sort of, like, could you imagine that in today's world?
00:03:03
Ben
Like, it would be social media, the reels would be spinning like crazy.
00:03:03
Richard
Oh no, we've got a PR disaster on our hands. We've got to get on the socials. We've got to get this out there. Oh, wouldn't they? Yeah. yeah
00:03:18
Richard
The socials of the day.
00:03:24
Ben
And that that was the whole...
00:03:25
Richard
need to write three letters. Quick.
00:03:28
Ben
Oh, my goodness. So anyway, back to my original point, have you had any moments when you've
00:03:31
Richard
hmm

Importance of Context and Fact-Checking

00:03:33
Ben
gone, nah, that's not right?
00:03:35
Ben
Like, seriously? Like, cause when I read that, i was, oh, sorry, i saw that. Oh yeah. Alfred Nobel invented dynamite. was just like, nah, but I mean, it's a movie. Hopefully movies are researched well enough that they don't just make false claims in that, in that regard.
00:03:51
Richard
well you never can tell I do believe in conducting i would Would I call it semi-rigorous fact-checking? I'd call it at least Googling around there are for a plausible answer.
00:04:03
Richard
I mean, I think can't it's probably happened. I can't remember the last time it's happened. i think the thing that's that is often missed in the stories is the context around them.
00:04:14
Ben
Yes.
00:04:16
Richard
And so you can see a catchy headline or something. I mean, everyone A, B tests their headlines these days. You can't rely on them as any source any any source of truth.
00:04:26
Richard
Particularly those little things that might scroll by on like a Bloomberg kicket ticker and under the screen or something.
00:04:32
Ben
Yeah, that's not right.
00:04:32
Richard
You're like, what? That can't be right.
00:04:35
Ben
And its context is a really interesting point, actually, because the way i read about Alfred Nobel was he was actually trying to make nitroglycerin safer.
00:04:35
Richard
Yeah.
00:04:47
Ben
because it was highly volatile. And so he designed a way for it to be used, you in a safe, so without people blowing limbs off.
00:04:55
Richard
Without killing himself.
00:04:56
Ben
Yeah, it just, and they just attached the Merchant of Death name tag to him anyway.
00:05:02
Richard
Damn
00:05:02
Ben
You know, you can't please people these days, right? I'm major dynamite.
00:05:06
Richard
it, damn it. They're calling me the merchant of death. I don't like it. What are we going to do here?
00:05:12
Ben
oh goodness me. All right, well, okay, well, let's let's put that one to the side.
00:05:17
Ben
But, yeah, that really caught me off guard. well I was just like, nah, wait, I've got to check that. i I do regularly have my phone near me when I'm watching a movie or something because there's always someone in the movie who I'm like, I know your face, but I can't place you.
00:05:30
Richard
That guy, where's he from?
00:05:31
Ben
and Yeah, but especially,
00:05:32
Richard
And so what do you do? do you Do you snap a picture of the screen and then just like go to AI and say, who's this guy?
00:05:38
Ben
well, I will. I will now that I know that you can do that. I just look up the show that I'm watching on IMDB and find the cast member and then click click their bio and and that tells me exactly
00:05:51
Richard
there we go. Yep. Who is Baron Harkonnen or who is, yeah.
00:05:57
Ben
and And the one thing that I've noticed and and my beautiful wife keeps reminding me of is if you're watching an English movie, guaranteed it's one of the Harry Potters that they were in. like is
00:06:09
Richard
When they were 12.
00:06:09
Ben
yeah you're basically You're basically not a British actor or actress if you weren't in one of the Harry Potter movies. So...
00:06:17
Richard
It's a bit like Marvel, the Marvel universe, isn't it?
00:06:17
Ben
but
00:06:19
Richard
Like, yeah.
00:06:19
Ben
Yeah, fair call.
00:06:19
Richard
Mm. Mm.
00:06:20
Ben
Yeah, in the American side. Although there's a couple of Australians in there as well.
00:06:24
Richard
che yeah
00:06:25
Ben
So there you go Hey, yeah on to travel tips, mate. And speaking of my wife, she she was talking about, you had the tip where you said that you you buy milk on your way to the hotel and for your tea. And she said, you know, that's how I book our hotels when we travel, right? And i was like, what do you mean? She goes, we've got a name for it. It's called the top three supermarkets in relation to the hotel location hack.
00:06:48
Ben
And I was like, tell me more. And because basically, because we...
00:06:51
Richard
I think that needs some branding work. That tag is just too long.
00:06:53
Ben
does Yeah, it's a bit long.
00:06:54
Richard
It needs to be shortened down to. Hmm.
00:06:56
Ben
ahll we'll We'll call it the merchant of death and see if that spins off. it But basically, we prep a lot of food when we holiday. And so it's really important that we're not carrying like food a long way to our hotel.
00:07:19
Ben
And I

Listener Feedback and Past Episodes

00:07:20
Ben
thought that was a great little travel tip.
00:07:20
Richard
Planning ahead. Yeah, it is great.
00:07:21
Ben
Yeah. She's she's a planner, though. She is a planner.
00:07:24
Richard
Yep.
00:07:25
Ben
There's no there's no doubt about it. Hey, mate, on to listener feedback. Listener KH phoned in, actually, and said, it's an unusual experience to listen to BCC because, Ben, you sound so sensible in the podcast.
00:07:35
Richard
Finding. Yeah.
00:07:43
Ben
LAUGHTER Oh, that might've been from a while back.
00:07:47
Richard
Wow, that's a bit of a backhander from the early days.
00:07:48
Ben
I'm not sure. Yeah. I'm not, yeah, I'm not too sure how sensible we sound at the moment, but we're having a lot of fun. That's for sure. Hey, yeah I got a conundrum for you.
00:08:01
Richard
Yeah.
00:08:02
Ben
Why do you put a space after the last word of a sentence before putting the punctuation? So when I edit the show notes and you send me through the show notes, you've always put a space and then the exclamation mark or space and then the question mark or something.
00:08:10
Richard
Oh, yeah.
00:08:16
Richard
I do actually. I space, yeah.
00:08:17
Ben
Why why is that a thing?
00:08:19
Richard
I don't know. I put the yeah full stops up against, but at the punctuation, don't know. I do. I space it out. Who are?
00:08:27
Ben
where's the muscle memory then? Like I get to the end of the sentence and you actually have to decide if you're going to put a space or not, depending on the punctuation you're choosing. Whereas I just put my punctuation and keep going.
00:08:35
Richard
Yeah.
00:08:38
Richard
There you go. i don't know. I can't explain it. There's no...
00:08:41
Ben
Okay. All right.
00:08:43
Richard
There's no rhyme or reason.
00:08:45
Ben
We've out now, what are we 45 episodes in? We've worked out that not all of our conundrums can be explained. I've got one for you then. How far away are we from a generation that doesn't need a driver's license?
00:08:59
Richard
Oh, yeah.
00:09:04
Ben
So context here.
00:09:04
Richard
It's a good question.
00:09:05
Ben
Now, my my girls, they've just, know well, they're 19, but they've, you know so they've got their license a few years ago. they They actually went old school and learned to drive manuals.
00:09:17
Ben
So, know, they can drive a stick, as our American friends will say. But I think there's, you know, some of their friends don't have licenses. And or very early in the the learning phase or and certainly learning in automatics.
00:09:31
Ben
But like how.
00:09:33
Richard
I think everything will be automatic. Like in, is it already like
00:09:37
Ben
Yeah.

Future of Driver's Licenses and Technology

00:09:38
Richard
it's, it's the default really, isn't it?
00:09:40
Richard
You've got to go out of your way to find a manual card. Don't
00:09:42
Ben
you You do, you do. But, you know, both my girls were very keen to know that if they got in a car, they could get it to move down the road. And again, Tanya's an excellent draw driver will driver, but also teacher.
00:09:59
Richard
Mm-hmm.
00:10:02
Ben
But, yeah, i just I just think that the cost of cars, the cost of fuel, the cost of of maintaining a vehicle, you know, the if we live near public transport and use ride-sharing services, there must be a world where people don't need cars.
00:10:23
Richard
I think so. i mean, I think it depends on your geography and your sort of city layout really. the The Gold Coast being sort of like long and thin, it's really it doesn't really have a center. And so you end up having to do a lot more driving than say, well, we certainly do as a family than we did when we were in Melbourne, where there's an excellent public transport infrastructure and you can just and you can just jump on it everywhere.
00:10:49
Richard
But yeah, I mean, even even self-driving cars and other sorts of things.
00:10:49
Ben
That's a good point.
00:10:52
Richard
I think the the companies that have that sort of tech, you know, Tesla for self-driving and other sorts of things, it's it's still further away than they think.
00:11:05
Ben
Yeah.
00:11:06
Richard
There's five or 10 years.
00:11:06
Ben
Yeah, fair.
00:11:07
Richard
I mean, it's coming. i think I think we'll get there. I think the tech's got to improve too and some of the costs have to change. Like, I know Tesla's in on cameras. rather than LiDAR, which I think is probably not optimal.
00:11:21
Ben
What's LIDAR?
00:11:23
Richard
LiDAR is it's like it's like radar with lasers. Radar with lasers. This isn't sounds awesome, doesn't it?
00:11:29
Ben
Hang on. isn't Isn't LASER an acronym as well?
00:11:33
Richard
It might be.
00:11:34
Ben
so So there's an acronym?
00:11:35
Richard
It's an acronym in an acronym. It was like inception of acronyms.
00:11:38
Ben
It's a bit unfair.
00:11:39
Richard
Acroception.
00:11:40
Ben
v Oh, my goodness. Okay.
00:11:43
Ben
Okay.
00:11:44
Richard
So effectively what it does is it makes a it makes a point cloud, right? This is light bounces off things, the light comes back, you can tell how far the objects are away from you based on based on sort of like sampling all the space out front, which sort of like that's with sonar, but but using lasers instead of sound waves, but the same kind of thing in concept, whereas
00:11:57
Ben
It's like bats.
00:12:09
Ben
Interesting.
00:12:11
Richard
kind of Tesla has gone for two cameras and gone for sort of like a stereoscopic camera thing, much like human vision. And so you've kind of got these, like, which is cheaper, but it but has all the same fallibilities that human vision does. So LIDAR can see through fog and other sorts of, you know, atmospheric hassles on the road, whereas human vision can't necessarily see.
00:12:34
Ben
i'm I'm very less likely to be able to see through fog. I can tell you that right now. Okay, so the question was, how far away are we from a generation that doesn't need a driver's license?
00:12:45
Ben
I feel like we're a fair way off still.
00:12:47
Richard
Well, I mean, maybe the next one, right? How long is the generation? 20 years or something?
00:12:51
Ben
Yeah, 25 years, I suppose.
00:12:52
Richard
I mean, yeah, I'd say.
00:12:55
Ben
Well, I mean, again, yeah to your point, that the geography is important.
00:12:56
Richard
Our kids. Our kids' kids.
00:13:00
Ben
Melbourne's a good example. i thought Singapore, probably Tokyo, new New York potentially,
00:13:04
Richard
Yeah.

LIDAR vs. Camera Technologies for Cars

00:13:06
Ben
you know, those the big cities with the good infrastructure.
00:13:10
Ben
Well, I guess someone living in New York's going to say, who you calling good infrastructure? But, you know, I think that, you know, Singapore is very simple to get around without a without a car.
00:13:22
Ben
And in fact, the cost of the cost of cars mean that you almost have to get around without one.
00:13:22
Richard
Singapore's fantastic, yeah.
00:13:27
Ben
So interesting. Okay. All i'll wait for your I'll wait for your update on LiDAR and and when to cancel my license.
00:13:36
Richard
I'll report it back, yep.
00:13:36
Ben
Thank

Conclusion and Next Episode Teaser

00:13:37
Ben
you.
00:13:38
Richard
but
00:13:38
Ben
Hey, that's it, Richard. Listeners have been BCC'd on our week. Thanks for joining in. We love to hear from you. Get in touch with us through the links in the show notes. They're always there. in next week's show, we're going to ask, is it better to travel with cash or with a card?
00:13:54

See you next week.
00:13:55
Richard
Oh,
00:13:56
Ben
Bravo, Charlie Club out.
00:13:58
Richard
that's the pod.
