00:00:18
Ben
Doing well, mate. You look a bit more lively this week too
00:00:21
Richard
bit more lively this week.
00:00:22
Richard
Yeah, although i missed the button on the intro. We've got about an extra five seconds there, but there you go We'll make up for it.
00:00:27
Ben
and no Well, we'll pad out our content. and Nice one.
The Value of Gap Years
00:00:33
Ben
Nice one. Hey, Fully Awake project this this week, want to ask you, should Should you take gap years? you know You know what a gap year is like. You finish know usually high school um and the it's usually the the year before high school and and unit starting university or getting a real job, I suppose.
00:00:51
Ben
But should we take them? What's your thoughts?
00:00:53
Richard
I'm all in. I love the idea of gap year and always, always have been a big fan, but even more so since a recent book I read range by David Epstein and
00:01:08
Richard
the range the premise of the book is that we specialize too early going through the school system and then through university and then getting a job and that by taking more time to stuff around with things you you actually make more cross-disciplinary connections um so um
00:01:27
Ben
Fair enough. is it Is stuff around the official term?
00:01:31
Richard
I think that's the official
Innovative Paths: Steve Jobs' Story
00:01:32
Richard
term. Well, it's kind of like the classic Steve Jobs story, right?
00:01:42
Ben
I need his own fonts. Yeah.
00:01:53
Richard
had a a strong game in that area, appealing to creatives.
00:01:56
Richard
so So that was because of his kind of gap year, I'm i'm saying.
00:02:00
Ben
My initial reaction would would have been that, you know, Steve Jobs is a special kind of individual.
00:02:05
Ben
But you but you're right, we all all are, aren't we? Like, it it doesn't have to be Steve Job-like to um to have that sort of range.
00:02:11
Richard
Yeah. Yeah. Well, just to make the connections, you sort of like you just through experimenting and playing around with stuff, it exposes you to more ideas in different fields.
00:02:21
Richard
And then you can take those ideas into into the field that you eventually end up specializing in. And yeah, so anyway, the book was fascinating. It cites lots of studies that people that take that time ah kind of make more contributions and go further in their fields.
00:02:38
Richard
later in their careers as a result of not specialising early.
00:02:44
Richard
so gap year, all in. What do you think? Are you in?
00:02:48
Ben
I'm definitely leaning more towards it. yeah And look, my own gap year was weird because I actually repeated year 12. um So my gap year was just studying, but it was sort of and a unique set of circumstances where which yeah which led me down
Richard's Gap Year Experience
00:03:05
Ben
um actually took a mid-career gap year though. um When I was sort of, I started in banking and finance and financial planning.
00:03:15
Ben
And one day I woke up and realized I just didn't have enough life experience to be advising, you know, newly retired people whether they should be, you know, where they should be spending the rest of their life.
00:03:51
Ben
And there's reasons to do it and reasons not to do it, but it was i'm ah I'm all in like you. i think I think the more opportunity you get to travel and and um and experience, the the the more rounded you become as a human.
00:04:06
Richard
For sure. Yeah. It's
Airport Shopping Preferences
00:04:09
Ben
Speaking of travel, mate, what's your most common airport purchase?
00:04:15
Richard
i was i was never much of a shopper really at the airports. so I'm not much of a shopper at the best of times actually, but my partner Mel has actually got me quite into airport surf shopping.
00:04:27
Richard
And so, you know, we'll go into this.
00:04:27
Ben
What? There's not much surf in airports, mate.
00:04:31
Richard
ah I know, but they always have a surf shop in Australia anyway.
00:04:34
Ben
The truth, i do you're right.
00:04:34
Richard
There's always like a city beach or or ah or ah whatever.
00:04:39
Richard
And so ah my most recent couple of airport purchases, non non-food, snacks or books, have been have been clothes.
00:04:49
Richard
So, yeah, a pair of billies and a couple of T-shirts.
00:04:53
Richard
So, yeah, that's me.
00:04:53
Ben
and you And you're you're happy with those purchases?
00:04:55
Richard
Aside from cables, phone cables, lost bits of tech that I managed to misplace on trips.
00:05:01
Ben
my Get a tech organiser. Bellroy, make a fantastic tech organiser. You'll never lose a thing again. Yeah, that's so that's my that's more tip.
00:05:09
Richard
the organiser. Anyway, how about you, Ben?
00:05:11
Ben
There's Common Airport.
00:05:14
Ben
I've alluded to this. I i purchase um a gift for the for the the plane staff. ah In fact, my most recent trip, I went into duty-free, and I don't know why, but there was no sort of middle ground.
00:05:28
Ben
It was either... a hundred dollars for a box of Ferrero Rochers and it was like a seriously big box. Um, or yeah, yeah, that's right.
00:05:35
Richard
Oh, this is a giant three foot long tube. It's like those topolrodes that are about a meter, you know?
00:05:39
Ben
That's right. Yeah. give Who buys them?
00:05:45
Richard
A meter of topolrodes, yeah.
00:05:46
Ben
Or it was $7 for a packet of Tim Tams, which is still like three times the price of the Tim Tams in Coles. And um so I bought the Tim Tams.
00:05:57
Ben
And I have to admit, it was a great learning experience because i reckon it was the most popular gift I've ever given. like I literally had how many Tim Tams?
00:06:07
Ben
Is it 11? 11 biscuits in a pack. I literally had 11 people come up and thank me for the Tim Tams.
00:06:14
Richard
That's excellent.
00:06:16
Richard
And did you distribute them individually or did you just give them the package?
00:06:18
Ben
No, no, definitely not. No, definitely not.
00:06:20
Ben
You give them the pack give them a sealed pack. And I try to buy gifts that are individually wrapped as well, but it definitely needs to be sealed.
00:06:28
Ben
You wouldn't want them to feel like they were being put in any sort of risk. So, yeah, it' definitely just give them the the sealed pack and do with it what they will.
00:06:37
Ben
You know, when I first started to do this, I wondered if they even opened them at all.
Travel Tips: Lounge Access
00:06:42
Ben
You know, it's not like they ever come back with, with,
00:06:48
Ben
chocolate on their fingers or face. Well, there you go. I have another travel tip for you, mate. Read your materials.
00:07:01
Ben
on that particular trip, um i was in Singapore and there's no matter how much you fly, read the i I went to a Priority Pass lounge which is attached to your Amex um because like you get ah a free membership and you can get in there and Changi is a massive airport.
00:07:18
Richard
It's got lounges all over the place too.
00:07:19
Ben
so But when was walking
00:07:22
Ben
Yeah, when was boarding the connecting flight, I looked down at my boarding class and it said, it actually was written on there that I was invited into the Chris Flyer Gold Lounge, which is an epic lounge in Chang'e.
00:07:35
Ben
And i't even I was so ignorant, I didn't even look at it. um And so, yeah, no matter how much you're traveling, read your materials. There's ah there's a travel tip for you.
Debate: Is 'Damn' a Swear Word?
00:07:48
Ben
Yeah. Listen to feedback this week. Last week, apparently i said, damn. I think I was talking about the lighting in restaurants.
00:07:57
Ben
And a listener posed, is that actually a swear word? And um where do you sit on, damn?
00:08:05
Richard
Oh, it's pretty soft. I don't think it's a swear word.
00:08:09
Richard
I think you can say like rats or something like that. Damn rats.
00:08:13
Ben
All right. All right.
00:08:15
Ben
Because we need to...
00:08:16
Richard
I don't think that'll get us censored on Spotify Apple Podcasts. So...
00:08:21
Richard
on spotterify apple pointss so
00:08:23
Ben
Well, speaking of censorship, I want to talk about the social media ban because yora you had a conundrum for us. So before we get to that, let's just offer a listeners, if you do want to weigh in on whether damn is a swear word or not, leave a comment, send us a text, join the inner sanctum. Those links are always in the show notes.
00:08:43
Ben
Now, in the conundrum of the week, this social media ban, where where do we sit?
Social Media Ban and Audience Reach
00:08:47
Ben
How is it affecting Bravo Charlie Club?
00:08:50
Richard
Is it crippling us, Ben, from reaching a younger audience that that need to benefit from our wisdom, from our old man wisdom?
00:08:57
Ben
ah oh old man wisdom so so the band itself is that under 16 right um right
00:09:05
Richard
They can't access social media. So in theory, they probably could still get podcasts, but I guess they wouldn't get YouTube. do today are they Is YouTube locked in that? I'm not sure.
00:09:14
Ben
I don't have 16 year olds mate that's a you problem not a me problem um
00:09:14
Richard
Maybe they do. They've got, they've got,
00:09:18
Richard
I don't actually have anyone that's on the wrong side of the band. So...
00:09:23
Ben
Okay. Yeah, true. Yeah, you as well. So, yeah, interesting one. Look, our listenership hasn't dropped off. it certainly hasn't grown over the over the Christmas period.
00:09:34
Ben
I think everyone sort of took a rest from listening to two old, bold guys rat rattle on.
00:09:39
Richard
We're not that big on TikTok either, Ben.
00:09:43
Richard
We've got to work on our TikTok game.
00:09:43
Ben
make too much of a presence. All right, we'll do more. We'll do more. No, we won't do any research.
Phrase Exploration: 'Think Nothing of It'
00:09:52
Ben
Forget that. Hey, so i mean what do we mean when we tell people to think nothing of it?
00:09:59
Ben
Like, what does what does that even mean? It sounds like some sort of a humble off, like, you know, oh, yeah, think nothing of it. um what Where did that saying come from?
00:10:09
Richard
I have no idea. think nothing of it. I think nothing of it.
00:10:12
Ben
It's an odd one, isn't it?
00:10:16
Ben
But I i am. I literally raised it. I'm thanking, because clearly the circumstances you're thanking someone for something. um
00:10:23
Ben
And so you're raising it. Like, you can't think nothing of it because you literally are trying to thank them for it.
00:10:31
Ben
it's a so It's a silly saying.
00:10:31
Richard
Yeah. it's a funny one, isn't it? It is a silly saying.
00:10:34
Ben
It's a silly saying. we've got to We've got to stop it, I reckon.
