Podcast Introduction

00:00:06
Richard
Welcome to the Bravo Charlie Club podcast, making you 12 and a half minutes more awesome each week. He's Ben, I'm Richard. Let's go. ben how are you doing this week?
00:00:17
Ben
I'm fantastic, mate. Just back from a trip. Life's pretty good.
00:00:22
Richard
Welcome home.
00:00:22
Ben
Hey, thank you. Thank you.

Welcoming Pakistani Listeners

00:00:24
Ben
We'll talk more about that later, I'm sure. But first of all, new listener country call out this week is Pakistan. And as you know, i do sometimes have to get some advice on this topic.
00:00:35
Ben
So I'm going to run with As-salamu alaykum, which I'm sure is exactly, I'm sure that's exactly right.
00:00:41
Richard
Nice.
00:00:44
Ben
And
00:00:44
Richard
That's exactly how you say it.
00:00:45
Ben
yes
00:00:47
Richard
Great job.
00:00:47
Ben
it it actually means peace be upon you, by the way. It's not just hello. It's it's far more, far more than that.
00:00:54
Richard
Nice. It's a bit formal, isn't it?
00:00:55
Ben
As-salamu alaykum.
00:00:56
Richard
Yeah.
00:00:56
Ben
i like him Yeah.
00:00:58
Richard
Hmm.
00:00:58
Ben
going to stop saying it now. Yeah.

Debate: Speak Up or Stay Silent?

00:01:03
Ben
Hey, yeah the fully awake project this week, I wanted to dive into what I called the benefit of a bad opinion. And my question to you is, would you rather be wrong or silent?
00:01:10
Richard
Mm.
00:01:16
Ben
Now, what I mean by that is if you're in a classroom context or if you're interacting with your your leadership of your team, you know would you rather wait until you had all the answers and give the perfect response?
00:01:17
Richard
no
00:01:31
Ben
Or do you want do you want to give the best response you have right now and and build and iterate from there? like where Where do you sit in that regard?
00:01:43
Richard
I guess it probably depends on, depends on the, the context, perhaps maybe the, the, the subject matter or the, or the discussion. But I think, yeah, I think for me,
00:01:59
Richard
i'm I mean, I'm happy to be wrong. I'm wrong heaps to ask anyone.
00:02:03
Ben
Yeah, I'm pretty good at it too.
00:02:04
Richard
But but i think I think the way I operate is I tend to start with questions. And so like rather than
00:02:13
Ben
Yeah, okay.
00:02:16
Richard
Rather than being wrong or silent, I'll take option C.
00:02:22
Ben
Yeah.
00:02:22
Richard
It's not presented there, which is ask lots of questions. Because I think asking questions is a skill and yeah and it helps build out your...
00:02:31
Richard
mental model of, of how the subject matter matter sits together. And when you're sort of building out your, you know, mental model, you're like, Oh, okay. That's, that's interesting.
00:02:41
Richard
I would have thought that that would have worked differently. Can you, can you explain that a bit more or how does that work? Or, you know, how do you see that working in with this or like, you know, those, those sorts of things and try and probe areas where you can connect it into the,
00:02:52
Ben
Mm-hmm. Yeah.
00:02:57
Richard
into the sort of the the mental expectations you have of the of the situation or the concept. Yeah.
00:03:02
Ben
I like that. So I've given you a and B and you've chosen C.
00:03:05
Richard
That's me.
00:03:06
Ben
okay but But you're right. that's So you're seeking to understand the question before yeah before answering.
00:03:11
Richard
Sort of. Yeah. Yeah.
00:03:29
Ben
so she's probably developed that talent quite early.
00:03:30
Richard
We say that... Well, and that could be, and and the the thing is, I think once once you sort of start developing that talent, right, you become the person that asks all the questions because you're developing the talent of asking the questions.
00:03:42
Richard
And so i think a lot of other people perhaps don't think to ask those questions because they're not trying to deconstruct it and then reconstruct it or reformat it into how it how it makes sense to them sort of thing.
00:03:49
Ben
Yeah.
00:03:57
Ben
Yeah. Interesting.
00:03:59
Richard
Hmm.
00:03:59
Ben
Interesting.
00:03:59
Richard
Yeah.
00:03:59
Ben
I like it. So you answer a question with a question. but But to the point though, often it's not the, when someone asks you to explain something, you need to get the context first.
00:04:03
Richard
yeah pretty much
00:04:12
Ben
So you've you've nailed the answer. that's That's pretty cool. Well done.
00:04:15
Richard
i think so yeah but like if if it's something though that yeah hey excellent thanks
00:04:16
Ben
I'll give you an <unk> give you a lie and
00:04:24
Ben
Sorry, you I interrupted you then. You said you were about to say, I think it's...
00:04:28
Richard
Well, I mean, I think that there's there's time too. So, I yeah i mean, I'm not i' like that about perhaps maybe work and technology things and things that I'm interested in, but there'll be a whole range of areas like like maybe fashion sets or other sorts of things where where I just couldn't care less and I'm happy to be silent
00:04:38
Ben
Yeah.
00:04:43
Ben
Yeah.

Funny Misprint Story

00:04:47
Richard
in in hoping that the conversation washes over quite quick.
00:04:48
Ben
but we've moved pretty quickly yeah we've talked about my my hats haircuts and tattoos you know theory where you know you can make a decision around hats and probably around haircuts you know and be wrong and and it doesn't have a long lasting effect you make a decision around a tattoo type question and you know it's it's there so you want you want to you want to get that one right interesting hey onto the travel tip of the week mate you shared to me a pretty cool soccer ball t-shirt story recently and i just think i just think that you should just recount that remind me to remind me how that went again
00:04:51
Richard
Yeah.
00:05:06
Richard
Yes. door. Yep.
00:05:16
Richard
Yep.
00:05:30
Richard
That was quite was quite funny. I i was in I always wanted a a T-shirt with with Japanese writing on it because it was so cool when I was in my 20s and they were they were rare. You didn't really see those things in Australia. So when I was overseas, I was actually in Dublin of all places and the World Cup was on.
00:05:53
Richard
And so I walked past this t-shirt shop that just had all of these World Cup themed t-shirts and I was just like, that is so cool. And I saw one with Japanese writing on it, had a but big soccer ball in the middle.
00:06:05
Richard
It was kind of like a yeah a light Moroni red and the the soccer ball was white. It was, you know had a lot of punch and liked the design and got it.
00:06:12
Ben
Yes.
00:06:14
Richard
And then, yeah I think it was probably about three or four months later after I'd been wearing this thing five days a week.
00:06:22
Ben
Yes.
00:06:22
Richard
Hey, look at my cool shirt with the Japanese writing on it. It's like the someone I'm talking to says, that's not Japanese, that's Chinese.
00:06:29
Ben
yeah
00:06:30
Richard
I'm like, oh, okay, well, it's still cool, right? And he's like, yeah, that one says dragon. That one says noodle, but it's upside down. That one says.
00:06:39
Ben
I love it.
00:06:40
Richard
So it's just this shirt with random s symbols laid out on it that they probably the the the Western designer had pilfered from some character set somewhere and laid out around a soccer ball to make it look cool.
00:06:54
Richard
So it's like totally totally nonsensical symbols on this shirt.
00:06:55
Ben
love it
00:06:59
Ben
I love it. Well, as you know, i've i've just returned from Japan and the the translations, the the Japanese English translations are still hilarious even even to today.
00:07:04
Richard
Yeah.
00:07:11
Ben
Like my favorite was on a vending machine that was called the No Sleep Shop, which just, I mean, it's it's it's factual. It's correct. It does operate twenty four seven but...
00:07:24
Ben
But you could use you could use many many different translations and they run with that one.
00:07:25
Richard
That is great, the no-sleep shop, yeah.
00:07:30
Ben
The one thing I noticed, though, expect precision in Japan.
00:07:33
Richard
yeah

Literal Interpretation in Japan

00:07:35
Ben
I was in a store and I asked, I was specifically wanting to make sure that I had bought something that was made in Japan. And the guy went away and I used Google Translate. and i was very specific. I said, I need to know that this is made in Japan.
00:07:35
Richard
What do you mean?
00:07:49
Ben
And he came away and he consulted with someone and he went and consulted with someone else. And he came back and he responded and he said, we can confirm the product is definitely manufactured in Japan. However, I'm unable to confirm the country of origin of the holding company that owns the manufacturing plant. And so he took a very literal approach He took a very literal question.
00:08:10
Richard
That's awesome.
00:08:12
Ben
i just wouldn't know it was made in Japan. And he was one thinking I was concerned about the holding company. So I love the precision. it it Yeah, I think that trip is probably a podcast of its own.
00:08:25
Ben
So we might do a deep dive into Japan.
00:08:26
Richard
Yep.
00:08:30
Ben
Something interesting. How many Australians went to Japan last year?
00:08:36
Richard
I heard it was like a million Australians went to Japan last year, which is crazy.
00:08:38
Ben
That's unbelievable, isn't it? but One in 25 people went to Japan. and and and And we're not alone too.
00:08:43
Richard
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:08:44
Ben
There was plenty of guys from the US s and and all around.
00:08:49
Richard
Yeah.
00:08:50
Ben
But one thing I noticed coming back, and I don't know why I've never paid attention to this before, because i think it was just on was a different brand and it was their their type of customs announcement.
00:09:02
Ben
But they said, Australia needs your help to keep dangerous pests out. And I was thinking to myself, ship sailed. Like, where was the where was the authority and in the announcement when bringing snakes and spiders, you know, in in our carry-on into Australia?
00:09:18
Ben
Like, what?
00:09:20
Richard
yeah
00:09:22
Ben
Something, some somewhere along the lines, we missed that. We missed that announcement. They can stop saying that. The dangerous pests are here. In fact, if anyone's visiting Australia, feel free feel free to fill your luggage.
00:09:28
Richard
Yes.
00:09:33
Richard
Take him home. Take him back.
00:09:35
Ben
Take him with you. Take him with you.

Listener Gift Exchange

00:09:38
Ben
part of Part of my trip was a work work and and a work colleague of mine. Do you remember our our listener, JG, who listened binge listened, I think, to like 40 plus episodes from the Netherlands and might in like a week or so?
00:09:52
Richard
Oh.
00:09:55
Ben
I took him one of the BCC mugs because I felt that he deserved that. Anyway, he he he gave us gifts in return. And so here for you, i have, this is a, I'm holding it up to the light.
00:10:05
Richard
oh
00:10:12
Ben
It's a ceramic KLM business class issued souvenir from, which comes from the from the airline KLM. And they're individually numbered. Yours is number 14.
00:10:25
Ben
And it's filled with with liquor. So you you pop the chimney.
00:10:29
Richard
Oh, fantastic.
00:10:30
Ben
You pop the chimney and and skull, I guess.
00:10:32
Richard
You drink from the chimney.
00:10:35
Ben
so And and i I have been blessed with one as well. So when we're together next, we'll we'll drink to listen to JG. Thank you very much.
00:10:45
Richard
Wonderful. Thanks, JJ.
00:10:46
Ben
Very nice. Very, very kind. on. had some listening to me.
00:10:53
Richard
Yeah, so I was going to say you mentioned that you had a bucket list and a someday maybe list and listener MG asks, what's the difference been?
00:11:02
Ben
Good question. So a bucket list is things that you just have to do. And, you know, they you prioritize them, you you plan holidays or or give up jobs to do.
00:11:15
Ben
a someday maybe list is sort of the next tier down where
00:11:18
Richard
Didn't quite make the cut or...
00:11:20
Ben
Yeah. Like it's, it's important enough that you keep it front of mind, but if you don't get to it, it's not the end of the world. And the reason, and and this isn't from me, I think this is actually comes from Dave Allen's getting things done, this book.
00:11:39
Ben
But the the the whole point of it is, is that you can only prioritize a certain number of things. And so my, my own bucket list only has four or five items on it.
00:11:48
Richard
Once you get one done, do you add a new one on?
00:11:48
Ben
And as, yeah, and it's from, usually from the someday maybe list, which makes sense, right?
00:11:50
Richard
Okay.
00:11:56
Richard
So it's like the reserves.
00:11:58
Ben
Yeah. Yeah. Sort of like, you know, if it'll be cool if this is done, but it's it's not, I'm not going to let it distract me. But the bucket list, I'm like, no, if I've got time, this is where I'm, like, so Japan was was on my bucket list.
00:12:11
Ben
right And obviously I've got a spot free now and I can move a new yeah item. And they're not always destinations, although I'm sure that's a common thing for most people. But yeah, that's where where that comes from. and and And I find for me, it just takes the pressure off. Like you can have a long list, you know, you could fill books of things that you want to do, but to have focus on four or five and work out how to achieve those, that's why i love that. and and And again, it's not my idea, but to separate, you know, to have the the a the A game and the reserves.
00:12:48
Ben
I like that. Yeah.
00:12:50
Richard
Nice.

Four Screens and Multitasking

00:12:51
Richard
Sport. Everything's got a sporting analogy, right?
00:12:51
Ben
works of course it does yeah and usually for people who can no longer play sport anymore they they just rely on rely on analogies so i'm firmly in that camp hey remember how i was commenting about one of our listeners at having four screens and asking why on earth you would need those well he actually wrote back in to give context because he felt like he'd been shamed and
00:12:58
Richard
Of course. Yeah.
00:13:17
Ben
I use the portrait screen for chats like WhatsApp and game chats. It's easier to track the conversation if a lot of people are talking. And the others are just for the game or work on the primary screen, while the secondaries are for web browsing while watching a show.
00:13:33
Ben
I'm trying to break this down. So he's working whilst watching a show and web browsing and playing a game where there's chats involved.
00:13:44
Ben
I don't know about you, mate, but if I was watching a show, I would just watch a show and turn the screens off. Yeah. We're still shaving, AT. I'm sorry, because well I don't get it. I couldn't couldn't allow myself to have four screens. it's that's That's a talent, I think, to be able to.
00:14:03
Richard
There is a talent.
00:14:05
Ben
I love it. Hey, Conundra of the Week, mate. When was the last time you saw someone smoking on a plane?
00:14:14
Richard
I could not even recall.
00:14:17
Ben
Okay, I'll hold that thought.
00:14:18
Richard
I've i've actually flown China southwest from from, I think it was from Kathmandu over to Lhasa.
00:14:32
Richard
And there was like literally people on that page on that plane with chickens in cages and and and stuff. Like it was kind of like real kind of like...
00:14:41
Ben
Still weren't smoking. Yeah.
00:14:42
Richard
Yeah, I've got, I'm like, I hope we don't hit those mountains and like, just it just goes over the top of them. But there was no smoking. There was smoking on that plane.
00:14:50
Ben
They're smoking. Oh, you've got to think of the chickens.
00:14:52
Richard
So there we go.
00:14:52
Ben
Yeah.
00:14:53
Richard
so
00:14:54
Ben
So listeners are familiar with my desire to darken hotel rooms with black tots, right? You know, those annoying LED lights.
00:15:00
Richard
yes
00:15:02
Ben
I've got a new pet peeve. On an overnight flight, which is the one back from Japan, I noticed they dim the cabin lights. The only thing that you can see is a sea of no smoking lights.
00:15:14
Ben
And I'm like, is that really necessary? is someone just going to accidentally forget when you've turned out the lights that they're not allowed to smoke anymore? Like I, I get the need for the cabin to have lighting for the, staff to be able to move up and down or for you to go to the bathroom or whatever.
00:15:31
Ben
But I was, all I was just sitting there thinking, I just need bigger black dots.
00:15:37
Richard
For everyone.
00:15:38
Ben
ever
00:15:38
Richard
Hand him out.
00:15:39
Ben
I suppose I could use an eye mask too, which...
00:15:42
Richard
Well, there you go.
00:15:43
Ben
look
00:15:43
Richard
That might be the ultimate black dot, right?
00:15:46
Ben
But it was it just made it didn't it made me laugh a little

Episode Conclusion

00:15:50
Ben
bit. And then when I couldn't get to sleep, it didn't make me laugh anymore.
00:15:53
Richard
No, no, then you're grumpy and tired.
00:15:54
Ben
Pretty much. That's it, Richard. Listeners have been BCC'd on our week. Slightly longer one this week, I've seen. To our listeners, thanks for joining in. We always love to hear from you, especially listen to AT justifying his number of screens. and Get in touch with the links in the show notes as usual. In next week's show,
00:16:15
Ben
We're going to ask, are there less volunteers in the world? See you next week. Bravo, Charlie Club. Out.
00:16:23
Richard
And that's the pod.
