Welcome & New Listener Shoutout

00:00:05
Richard
Welcome to the Bravo Charlie Club, making you 12 and a half minutes more awesome each week. He's Ben, I'm Richard. Let's go. Ben, are you doing this week?
00:00:16
Richard
I am.
00:00:17
Ben
Not as good as you. You're particularly excited.
00:00:20
Richard
I'm pumped, pumped.
00:00:20
Ben
What is what's coming on?
00:00:22
Richard
I'm pumped for today's episode.
00:00:24
Ben
Good stuff. Hey, mate, new listener country call out this week. The Seychelles have joined us. So that's bonjour.
00:00:31
Richard
Bonsoir.
00:00:32
Ben
Bonjour. Bonjour. Yeah, for not bonjour, which bonjour.
00:00:35
Richard
And not bonza, but bonzu.
00:00:38
Ben
Yeah, for hello. Or informal kidea, which is right up your alley. That means what's up. So, yeah, there you go.
00:00:44
Richard
What's up? Love it.

Ride-Sharing App Gripes

00:00:47
Ben
There you go. Hey, in the Fully Awake project this week, we've got some gripes about ride sharing to get off our chest. Now, you you had you had something that you needed to lead with.
00:00:54
Richard
We do.
00:00:57
Richard
I feel like I'm getting a bit too gripey about this kind of stuff, but in in the interest of just full venting,
00:01:01
Ben
Go on. That's what we're here for.
00:01:05
Richard
what is it with Uber and those notifications you get on your handset? Like, you know, why don't you take a ride? You know, oh, do you get those? do you get those to your handset?
00:01:16
Ben
i yeah yeah i
00:01:16
Richard
Like some random time, 10 in the morning and Uber thinks you should take, take why not take a ride today? And I'm like, I'll use the yeah app when I want to use the app, right? I use it all the time. I've done a thousand rides in it.
00:01:28
Richard
I'm not going ditch it and go somewhere else, but,
00:01:30
Ben
it's It's some sort of time thing. Richard must need a ride right now. We'll send him a message.
00:01:34
Richard
What is it thinking?
00:01:35
Ben
Look, I got a notification from Didi, and I switched to Didi, and we'll get to that in a minute, asking me if I needed a lift home to avoid the crowded commute.
00:01:36
Richard
her Who's...
00:01:45
Ben
Now, i work from home, so
00:01:47
Richard
This guy's fixed the algorithm.
00:01:50
Ben
like What is going on
00:01:51
Richard
Yeah. Yeah.
00:01:53
Ben
So I switched from Uber and I'll tell you why. Uber had a challenge fare policy. So if you thought that they'd made an error, you could challenge it. But I found it to be too restrictive. I've challenged it a number of times, call it three or five, less than 10 times. And each time I've been right and I've corrected my fare. But I had i went to Challenge Affair recently because the guy dropped me off and then didn't turn off the meter or the the virtual meter until he was like a kilometer away from my house. And and like that i don't I don't rate that at all.
00:02:24
Ben
Anyway, i i
00:02:26
Richard
and So you got slugged extra.
00:02:27
Richard
Did you get slugged extra?
00:02:28
Ben
yeah, I got extra. so and But, well, I'd run out of Challengers.
00:02:31
Richard
I thought it was a fixed fare. I thought like when you committed to

Uber Pool Antics

00:02:34
Richard
the fare at the start, like that was it, but no.
00:02:35
Ben
Yeah, and but then they send that, oh, your fare's been adjusted due to changes in the route or circumstances or whatever.
00:02:39
Richard
See, I haven't had that. I haven't had that happen.
00:02:41
Ben
Oh, I get it all the time.
00:02:42
Richard
I've never had that. Yeah, okay.
00:02:43
Ben
maybe Maybe I'm on some sort of wanted list. but But I think it should be like cricket.
00:02:49
Richard
Or not wanted this. Sure.
00:02:50
Ben
like like but if If you appeal a wicket and you sorry, I'm keeping catching up if If you appeal a wicket and you're right, then you don't lose a challenge. You just, you know it's game on, right?
00:03:05
Ben
And, like, if I've challenged guru and they've they've adjusted my fare, why do i run out of challenges?
00:03:06
Richard
sure
00:03:11
Ben
It just...
00:03:12
Richard
You should not lose a challenge for that. That's an Australian, I would say.
00:03:15
Ben
Very un-Australian. That frustrated me.
00:03:17
Richard
Yeah.
00:03:18
Ben
The second thing was I used to pre-book Ubers for airports and just now it just seems expensive. Like, the booking fee alone is really high. And another thing...
00:03:26
Richard
When you get it. So sometimes you pre-book and it just doesn't come. I've had that happen.
00:03:31
Ben
Oh, okay. used to come when I just felt like if I booked it when I woke up, you know, because I was booking it for early morning flights and it felt it felt smart and very, you know, efficient and very Ben Flintoff.
00:03:39
Richard
Yes.
00:03:47
Richard
ye
00:03:47
Ben
But it just got expensive. And then the last thing, someone has to write in and tell us if they use the Uber pool function. Do you know what I mean about that?
00:03:57
Richard
No.
00:03:58
Ben
Right.
00:03:58
Richard
Yes, I know it's there. They keep do they keep banging on about that too. that's the
00:04:02
Ben
i use I used it once, and I know you can save, like, good amounts of money, but I think it's a...
00:04:07
Richard
Can you, like I would say $4.80 or something. Like is that probably.
00:04:12
Ben
Oh, you're taking short of shorter trips. I've seen, like, half, you know, half the the amount, you know, from an airport into the city or something like that.
00:04:18
Richard
Yeah, okay.
00:04:21
Ben
But I took it once.
00:04:22
Richard
Oh, yeah. Fair.
00:04:23
Ben
I took one once, and I just... I'll never to do it again. It just... It felt wrong. It just felt... It was weird. But...
00:04:30
Richard
Really? Because you were in the back with a stranger and you and you had to talk to them or something?
00:04:31
Ben
but
00:04:34
Ben
well the Well, no, i actually had gotten to get into the front seat and that i opened the door and there was someone in it, which was my mistake because I'd booked the pool.
00:04:41
Richard
Oops. Yeah.
00:04:45
Ben
Whoops. Anyway, and then one put their seat forward and I was crouched sort of in the back and then and it was a small car anyway and I had luggage and it was just like, nah, what am I doing? I'm trying to save the company, you know, $10 and it's just not
00:04:55
Richard
Yeah.

Electric Vehicle Enthusiasm

00:04:58
Ben
going to happen.
00:04:59
Ben
So...
00:04:59
Richard
Mm-hmm.
00:05:01
Ben
Anyway, let's move on from our rant before we get pigeonholed.
00:05:04
Richard
The sideline completely.
00:05:07
Ben
Let's let's move on let's a move on to travel tips, mate. Got something you want to talk about?
00:05:13
Richard
Travel tip of the week. Yes. So i' my new latest YouTube binge is Sam Evans, the electric Viking. He's got this...
00:05:23
Ben
Electric Viking.
00:05:24
Richard
Electric bike. He does have a beard. He does look vaguely Scandinavian, but he's he's just got a great channel on electric cars and everything that's happening in EVs in in Australia.
00:05:29
Ben
What is...
00:05:36
Ben
Oh, okay.
00:05:37
Richard
And yeah, I'm just like, you know, it was it was Scott Brown carpentry in New Zealand for a good couple couple of months.
00:05:43
Ben
Yep.
00:05:44
Richard
I went all down that rabbit hole.
00:05:45
Ben
Do you love your carpentry? Yep.
00:05:46
Richard
Yeah, I'm now an amateur carpenter without the $30,000 worth of tools. And, you know, Sam Evans, Electric Viking, is my latest YouTube channel.
00:05:59
Richard
So...
00:06:00
Ben
So so give us give us a highlight. Like if I were to actually watch it, which I'm not, I'll just honestly tell you right now. what What could I possibly learn from this guy?
00:06:10
Richard
Well, you'll learn about Chinese battery tech, for example, and how the latest round of cars are so much more efficient than the previous, getting smaller batteries, longer range,
00:06:13
Ben
Right.
00:06:21
Richard
Yeah, all that kind of stuff, and particularly models and brands that you'd never hear of in in Australia or all that are heading this way that we haven't seen on our shores before.
00:06:28
Ben
Interesting.
00:06:32
Richard
So I just find it really informative.
00:06:33
Ben
Yeah.
00:06:34
Richard
I've always kind of come away learning something. So here's my latest binge.
00:06:41
Ben
So that's that's interesting. 84% of our listeners are Australia-based. So there's 16% outside.
00:06:46
Richard
Mm.
00:06:47
Ben
I wonder if you know the other yeah overseas listeners are experiencing the same sort of inundation of EV which we're seeing.
00:06:57
Ben
Like petrol prices go up and and eve EV sales go through the roof.
00:06:57
Richard
Could be.
00:07:01
Richard
Yeah,
00:07:01
Ben
Like we're experiencing it right now. Like the wait lists for EV cars is is growing again. So, yeah, okay, all right.

Dining Disasters & Engagement

00:07:10
Ben
As I said, i won' I'm glad you're here.
00:07:12
Ben
You can keep keep feeding me the the Intel. it's It's not going away. Even Formula One has battery tech as a significant part of their their power system.
00:07:20
Richard
I know, it's 50-50 now. I was surprised to learn.
00:07:22
Ben
Yeah.
00:07:23
Richard
Yeah, yeah.
00:07:23
Ben
So, yeah, we're kidding ourselves if we think it's going anywhere. So much, much.
00:07:28
Richard
They've got Formula E now too, which is the the quietest, highest speed race you've never heard of.
00:07:30
Ben
Yes. Yeah. It's just the quietest. what so It's like who can whisper the loudest. Yeah.
00:07:39
Richard
Yeah, exactly.
00:07:41
Ben
It's crazy.
00:07:42
Richard
yeah
00:07:43
Ben
Oh, goodness me. Hey, listener feedback. We've got a listener asking our listeners questions. This is awesome. This has to be quite unique. And and oh
00:07:51
Richard
It's very meta, very Inception, isn't it?
00:07:53
Ben
yeah
00:07:53
Richard
Yeah, I like it.
00:07:53
Ben
yeah oh I was there. This actually happened. The question is from listener Gigi. And he's asking our listeners, have you ever been out for a meal and then had to reorder a whole meal at another place because the meal you received was so bad?
00:08:08
Ben
And this happened while i was I was visiting with him very recently.
00:08:11
Richard
Oh, that's a great question.
00:08:13
Ben
And what what happened was we ordered this meal and he had ordered the beef soup and I'd ordered the chicken soup and we got some chicken wings on the side.
00:08:16
Richard
i i don't think I've ever had that happen.
00:08:22
Ben
And... we could That was the first sort of, you know, fail. And then when we bit into the chicken wings, they were they were red, they were uncooked. Like you can't get medium rare chicken wings, I don't think.
00:08:38
Ben
But
00:08:39
Richard
That's not good.
00:08:40
Richard
That's so not good.
00:08:40
Ben
to
00:08:41
Ben
it's a big fail, isn't it? So well that was that was the thing.
00:08:44
Richard
fail.
00:08:46
Ben
And so we then went next door and got pizza. And the pizza we ordered was falling apart. And so we then went to the next place and and just ordered
00:08:56
Richard
Oh my God. It's a real fail crawl.
00:09:01
Ben
it it it Yeah, it turned into like one of those progressive dinners, except we were like leaving a trail of unfinished meals behind us, which was quite quite ridiculous. And so Gigi's question is, has this ever happened to anyone else or do you just lump it?
00:09:16
Ben
Or do you send it back and get the existing establishment to fix what they what they messed up the first time?
00:09:22
Richard
Oh,
00:09:23
Ben
Have you ever even heard of anything like that?
00:09:30
Ben
Yeah.
00:09:34
Richard
i've i've had had think I've had one might have maybe once. sort of like Usually I'll just push through, right? Oh, this tastes terrible, but you'll eat it anyway because you ordered and paid for it rather than just like, this is ridiculous.
00:09:43
Ben
Yeah.
00:09:48
Richard
I'm out of here.
00:09:49
Ben
Yeah.
00:09:49
Richard
so
00:09:49
Ben
Well, yeah, and look, certainly i've I've done that, but this was the first one in particular was almost like risking food poisoning.
00:09:57
Richard
you can't go with raw chicken.
00:09:58
Ben
Yeah, that was...
00:09:58
Richard
There's just no way, no way you can go there.
00:10:01
Ben
and And then even if you send it back, do you trust them? Like, it's like, yeah, that you can't...
00:10:05
Richard
Nah, if you, nah, unless you're stuck there with a whole bunch of friends who've all got meals that came out okay, then there's no, there's no way, there's no way you push through.
00:10:11
Ben
Yeah, well which which we weren't. it was just the two of us. Yeah, it was just just the two of us.
00:10:15
Richard
yeah
00:10:17
Ben
And so, you know, you've got one job, cook the chicken wings. So there you go.

Café Menu Observations

00:10:22
Ben
So to our listeners, we'd love to hear if you've had a massive fail, if this has actually happened to you, because we feel like it's quite a unique scenario.
00:10:32
Ben
Leave us a comment, send us a text, join the Inner Sanctum on WhatsApp. The links are always in that show notes. Mate, the colundrum of the week, when your local cafe changes hands and they redo that clipboard flip style menu and they replace it with laminated, you know, pictures, does that mean the cafe is about to go downhill or is it like...
00:10:50
Richard
Oh yeah.
00:10:53
Richard
Headed downhill. It's under new management there. Yeah. I don't know. I'm a big fan. like the clipboard. like that dog-eared bit of paper on top. Makes it feel like you're kind of getting, don't know, like the meal of the day or the meal of the week or whatever.
00:11:07
Richard
It makes it feel like they've got bit of seasonal change in the menu. Once it's laminated, it's locked in forever.
00:11:13
Ben
Yeah. Yeah, true.
00:11:14
Richard
Then all you all you're going to get is like red pen through the things that don't exist anymore or little bits of paper over the edges where the price has gone up from $11 to $11.50.
00:11:23
Ben
changed it. Yeah. Yeah. well like what put
00:11:26
Richard
And they stick they stick a bit of sticky tape over it and then write a new price on.
00:11:28
Ben
Yes. Yeah.
00:11:31
Richard
Yeah.
00:11:31
Ben
Customers love that. but They love knowing the prices used to be cheap and they've gone up.
00:11:35
Richard
Yeah. Yeah.
00:11:37
Ben
mean But also, I've never been to a like a fancy restaurant where they had pictures of them the meals. like It's always just words that I've never been able to understand.
00:11:45
Richard
No, that's is
00:11:49
Ben
you know and and so you're saying, I'll have the beef. like You just...
00:11:53
Richard
what is Prigo Tagalo anyway? Yeah. Yeah. but
00:11:58
Ben
That's right.
00:11:58
Richard
yeah
00:11:59
Ben
Well, i'm and I'm in two minds because if a cafe does change hands and they like laminate a menu or something, at least they're trying to, you know, try. They're showing you that they're all a part of it.
00:12:13
Ben
But yeah, it's it's I've not seen it end well when that scenario is unfolded too. So it's an interesting one.
00:12:20
Richard
Yeah.
00:12:20
Ben
Yeah. Okay.
00:12:21
Richard
Yep.
00:12:21
Ben
All right. Well, so no no to the laminated picture menus.
00:12:25
Richard
No.
00:12:26
Ben
It's a hard no.
00:12:26
Richard
Yep. Don't go

Teaser for Next Episode

00:12:27
Richard
there.
00:12:27
Ben
Got it.
00:12:27
Richard
Yep.
00:12:29
Ben
That's it, Richard. Listeners have been BCC'd on our week. And next week's show, we're going to ask, why do vacuum cleaners now have LCD screens? See you next week.
00:12:39
Ben
Bravo, Charlie Club out.
00:12:42
Richard
And that's the pod.
