Introduction to Bravo Charlie Club

00:00:07
Richard
Welcome to the Bravo Charlie Club podcast, making you 12 and a half minutes more awesome each week. He's Ben, I'm Richard. Let's go. Ben, how are you this week, mate?
00:00:23
Richard
Hola.
00:00:28
Ben
The Fully Awake Project.
00:00:28
Richard
I knew that one from watching the soccer.
00:00:29
Ben
You did. Yeah, yeah. I think i think the yeah um South American countries, there's there's a lot of sharing of of language there, so that's good.
00:00:38
Richard
Yeah.
00:00:39
Ben
Heavy uses of Spanish. Fully Awake Project,

Jury Duty Avoidance

00:00:42
Ben
mate. You did jury duty. Now, I have a confession to make just between you and I.
00:00:45
Richard
I did. Yes.
00:00:50
Ben
Whenever that letter, and I've got two or three of them requesting me to go on jury duty, whenever that comes, I always just go straight to my employer and say, can you sign that I'm too important to...
00:01:05
Ben
But I don't actually know why. don't actually have a reason. It's just something that I haven't wanted to do. Maybe my civic duty will come back and bite me sometime. But what's involved? Tell me about it. Okay. Okay.
00:01:26
Ben
okay
00:01:31
Richard
maybe half the people there were retired.
00:01:35
Richard
So my kind of thinking about that phenomenon is that, like you say, people who've got work or got other things that they can't do, can't make it. And for people who have retired, jury duty.
00:01:45
Richard
Oh, that's kind of interesting.
00:01:46
Ben
is And they get paid.
00:01:47
Richard
That sort of mixes up the week a bit. I'm going to get a look, check it out.
00:01:49
Ben
Yeah. cents. Yeah.
00:01:50
Richard
Well, you do get paid. The hilarity about the the payment is that they they pick up your your public transport and they have a ah daily rate for you as well.
00:02:00
Richard
But of course, in Queensland, with the state government reduced fares, that's 50 cents each way
00:02:07
Ben
since
00:02:08
Richard
hey cow yeah So, like, thanks for that. I didn't bother claiming the dollar.
00:02:13
Ben
didn't put it in didn't put in so what so what happens what happens like you've you've got your notice you've said I'm going you're told to show up on a day then what happens
00:02:14
Richard
um um But, no.
00:02:22
Richard
So you've got your notice.

Jury Selection Process

00:02:25
Richard
about 80 people in the pool that had opted in.
00:02:29
Richard
So I don't know how big the the pool was initially, but that was the people that turned up. You sit through...
00:02:33
Ben
80 to get 12. Right. Good. Yep.
00:02:37
Ben
ah
00:02:39
Richard
you sit in this room. It's got about 100 seats in it, and they're all like those government plastic chairs that you probably sat on in high school.
00:02:51
Ben
good
00:02:51
Richard
So, like, awesome seating. um You watch about an hour's worth of videos before the selection takes place to to talk about, you know, your...
00:02:53
Ben
yeah
00:03:02
Richard
how the the legal system works and the different people and what their jobs are and all that kind of thing and then you go into the courtroom and they have this little thing like the bingo where they they put a bit of paper into this barrel they actually turn the handle they pull a piece of paper out and that's your your juror number right so you know
00:03:24
Ben
Wow.
00:03:24
Richard
you Number 12 or something.
00:03:24
Ben
Yep.
00:03:26
Richard
And then they and they keep going basically to, to the you know, picking people. that There's a phase before that where they you can go up to the judge if you've got reasonable reason why you can't make it.
00:03:37
Richard
You can converse converse with ah her in this case. And and they'll exclude you from from the sort of selection.

Courtroom Insights vs. TV Portrayal

00:04:02
Richard
They have... until you are sworn in to exclude you, but they can't ask you any question.
00:04:08
Richard
maybe it's judged on your, your walk or your swagger, how you get it, yeah how you get up there.
00:04:11
Ben
Yeah.
00:04:14
Richard
And once you, once the sort of swearing in starts, uh they they can't contest so was juror number nine maybe or something like that i so i did get picked but a couple of people got all the way like right up to almost taking the oath before they were excluded other people got knocked out as you know uh as soon as they took two steps inside so um
00:04:31
Ben
Yep.
00:04:38
Ben
They walk funny.
00:04:39
Richard
Yeah, it was ah it was a fascinating process.
00:04:39
Ben
Yeah. Interesting. Interesting.
00:04:42
Richard
So the jury selection happened.
00:04:43
Ben
Interesting.
00:04:44
Richard
So that that ended up taking probably another hour to kind of get through to get through that process. And then The judge explained everything again to us as jurors. We went off to the jury room, had a of tea. We went in and started. We got opening remarks from the from the prosecution. it it was it was a pretty interesting...
00:05:09
Richard
process because you you kind of like once again, so much of my interpreting of the, way things worked is from watching US you know iized highly stylized,
00:05:19
Ben
LA law. Yeah.
00:05:22
Ben
Law and order. Yeah.
00:05:24
Richard
order There we go, that one. that one um You can tell I love it.
00:05:26
Ben
Yeah.
00:05:28
Richard
and um And Mel, is devastated I've got in to the court case because she is the biggest true crime buff that you've ever seen. And, like, i get picked.
00:05:35
Ben
Oh,
00:05:36
Richard
She doesn't get picked. Yeah. Anyway, there they a lot of the evidence was pre-recorded and they had a they had they'd they'd set, you know, five days aside for the case.
00:05:38
Ben
goodness. i
00:05:49
Richard
But because there was a problem with with the evidence or something, they they didn't tell us exactly what the problem was. But basically on day two, we got dismissed and they couldn't run the case. They had to re re-run it.
00:06:03
Ben
Right.
00:06:03
Richard
early early this early this year.
00:06:04
Ben
Interesting.
00:06:06
Richard
this This was late last year. So, yeah.
00:06:08
Ben
Yeah, yeah.
00:06:09
Richard
So so anyway, so we got dismissed and um that was that was it.
00:06:11
Ben
There you go.
00:06:14
Richard
that's my That's my running with the law, Ben.
00:06:16
Ben
Yeah. And you got your 50 cent bus ride home fully funded by the government.
00:06:22
Richard
Thanks.
00:06:23
Ben
Well done.
00:06:23
Richard
Thanks, Queensland. Yeah.
00:06:25
Ben
Well done.
00:06:25
Richard
So, yeah.
00:06:25
Ben
That's interesting. So, um well, thank thank you.
00:06:26
Richard
So my bringing justice to Queensland. It didn't quite pan out.
00:06:29
Ben
thank Thank you for your your so doing your civic duty.
00:06:32
Richard
Hmm.
00:06:32
Ben
As I said, I've i've actively avoided it in the past, and it was and I don't know why. I'm i'm interested Yeah, yeah. i'm interested

Jakarta Travel Tips

00:06:39
Richard
It's a really interesting process to go through, you know, like without having the pressure of being involved in one side or the other a juror.
00:06:40
Ben
to hear to hear you
00:06:41
Ben
yeah
00:06:47
Richard
Yeah, fascinating.
00:06:48
Ben
Interesting. Hey, um speaking of buses, travel tip of the week. i mean I'm heading to Jakarta next week and um I've been told, and I've been to Jakarta and I've been told this is the same for Manila and Philippines as well. Never get in a car without filling a water bottle or using a bathroom.
00:07:12
Ben
And it's just, isn't that just the greatest advice ever?
00:07:15
Richard
Same for Bali.
00:07:16
Ben
Yeah.
00:07:16
Richard
Bali as well. Yeah. yeah
00:07:17
Ben
Cause you can just get caught. I've, I've heard of guys, you know, taking eight hours to travel, you know, 10 kilometers and stuff like this. It's just, it's just nuts.
00:07:27
Richard
It does. It just gridlocks and you don't yet know why.
00:07:28
Ben
Um,
00:07:30
Richard
um
00:07:30
Ben
Yeah.
00:07:31
Richard
Yeah.
00:07:32
Ben
And you can't really get out and walk. It's not safe. i have i've I've chosen to walk.
00:07:36
Richard
Well, where are you anyway?
00:07:37
Ben
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:07:37
Richard
You're like, I don't know where I am.
00:07:39
Ben
ah I've chosen to walk once in Jakarta and and I probably regretted it. It was just the traffic.
00:07:47
Richard
So humid too, those countries.
00:07:48
Ben
Well, it's it's like this trusting parting of the vehicles when you step out onto the road to cross the road. i don't know. But to their credit, I've also never seen accidents.
00:08:00
Ben
in in Jakarta. right just It's there's this rhythm, this city rhythm of how they drive and it's just it just seems to work.
00:08:07
Richard
Yeah.
00:08:10
Ben
But anyway,
00:08:11
Richard
on that topic i do a lot of cycling and I actually feel safer cycling in Bali with the tuk-tuks and the scooters going everywhere and the cars and and stuff because it its it just sort of flows and you sort of get in.
00:08:18
Ben
Yeah.
00:08:24
Richard
Everyone's kind of looking out for everyone. Because there's a fair amount of unpredictability on those roads, people people are by and large at a kind of safe speed.
00:08:34
Richard
It feels safer than cycling in Australia sometimes. So, yeah.
00:08:37
Ben
e
00:08:38
Richard
Anyway.
00:08:39
Ben
Well, um there you
00:08:39
Richard
Yes.
00:08:41
Ben
don't know if I'm ever going to be cycling in Bali, but it's good it's good to know that I'll be safe when I when i do take up the opportunity.
00:08:51
Richard
Yes.
00:08:54
Ben
Listener feedback. We promised our listeners that we would try and work out what goes on with that notify anyway. You know, when youre when we've done the research, did it did it with my daughter, and here's the the big reveal.
00:09:00
Richard
Yes. Now you've done the research, Ben. What's the, uh, yeah.
00:09:08
Ben
It literally notifies you anyway. So it overrides whatever settings that, you know so putting your phone on silent, is is almost irrelevant when the person hits notify anyway.
00:09:20
Ben
um big
00:09:21
Richard
Or does it be?
00:09:22
Ben
it Well, if if you haven't got your phone on...
00:09:22
Richard
Yeah. a
00:09:25
Ben
Sorry, I mean, you you know, the the switch on the side, if you've got that on, it doesn't override that.
00:09:29
Richard
Yes.
00:09:31
Ben
The the phone won't beep, but...
00:09:32
Richard
Interesting. Did it.
00:09:33
Ben
but it still flashes up on your screen as ah as a notification, even if you're set to, know, do not disturb or whatever. So it was very, very strange. And we were trying to work out if there was a way to override the allowed notify anyways or something, but it was too too big of a rabbit hole for us to to find out.
00:09:54
Ben
But we literally sat side by side. I sent a message, hit notify anyway, and it popped up on the screen. that was... we We're both a little bit confused. like What's the point of this function?
00:10:05
Ben
um Just stop it, Apple.
00:10:07
Richard
It'd be interesting to test

Listener Feedback and Appreciation

00:10:09
Richard
that if you weren't in the address book, like if you're a random ah messenger too, because it might work differently if you're in the favourites list or if you have a star next to your name.
00:10:16
Ben
Oh, fair. Yeah. Could not a contact. Mm-hmm.
00:10:22
Richard
Yeah.
00:10:24
Ben
And more more listener feedback. Someone who are probably needs to remain anonymous has said, I've just listened to the latest PCC and I still think the useless box is awesome. so ah So that's there's three people now, um which ah we're we're still very much still very much in the minority.
00:10:39
Richard
Who love it, who love the useless jobs
00:10:43
Ben
Now, and Lardy69 wrote on Apple podcast reviews.
00:10:43
Richard
that we don't mention.
00:10:48
Ben
Have a listen to this. When this was put in front of me, I thought, oh, no, really? Two blokes nattering about who knows what? But I love it, and it's now locked into my weekly routine. Definitely feeling 12 and a half minutes more awesome each week.
00:11:00
Ben
Sometimes a little bit more awesome when they run a couple minutes over, which i think we're going to do today. Reviewer out. So he's even using, like, the language of Bravo Charlie Clubs.
00:11:09
Richard
Oh, thanks, Lardy.
00:11:10
Ben
How good is that? How good is that?
00:11:11
Richard
Cheers.
00:11:25
Ben
What do we mean when we say nothing would make me happier?
00:11:29
Richard
It's an interesting one, isn't it? it opens with the negative and, ends with the positive.
00:11:42
Richard
yeah.
00:11:42
Ben
All right. well Well, we'll come back to that one. That was actually written into us from a listener as well. it was it's ah It's a strange saying. It's a strange saying.
00:11:50
Richard
It is a strange thing.
00:11:51
Ben
Nothing would make me happy.
00:11:52
Richard
I guess it, like
00:11:52
Ben
I'm like, really? Like...
00:11:56
Richard
I guess that, I guess it sort of means they'd be very happy with that,
00:11:59
Richard
So yeah, nothing would make me happier.
00:11:59
Ben
yeah Oh, ah good. I mean, I guess, you know, again, I'm um' i'm great at i'm great overthinking things. We'll just latter let it yeah that'll be a sign of of satisfaction. Hey, that's it, Richard. Listeners have been BCC'd on our week. In next week's show, we ask, is beach tennis a sport?
00:12:17
Ben
See you next week. Bravo, Charlie Club, out.
00:12:19
Richard
And that's the pod.
