Introduction and Welcome

00:00:02

00:00:13
Ben
I'm amazing. And you've got a whole lot of energy flying. Well done, mate. You've brought it You've brought it You have. Hey, isn't it exciting?
00:00:22
Richard
It's the intro. The intro psychs me up.
00:00:23
Ben
Yeah.
00:00:25
Richard
It's like one of those Anthony Robbins power things, you know, that you click fingers five times or something and do the woo-woo-woo and then you power up.
00:00:25
Ben
Yeah. yeah i think
00:00:34
Ben
love I it.
00:00:34
Richard
Anyway.
00:00:36
Ben
I think we've got a fair bit of a way to go before we get up to his energy level. He's like completely off the charts.
00:00:40
Richard
Yeah, probably.
00:00:42
Ben
But I love i love where you're sitting.
00:00:42
Richard
Yeah.

Listener Prize Announcement

00:00:44
Ben
Hey, new listener country call out this week. We've also got a prize announcement. Now, do you remember that we put a poll in the Inner Sanctum asking about, know, what a double...
00:00:49
Richard
Oh.
00:00:56
Ben
a double bacon cheeseburger had, whether it was two patties, two pieces of cheese or two pieces of bacon or all four. And we didn't really care if listeners got the answer right. In fact, and to our show Credo, we never did any research on what the actual answer is.
00:01:13
Ben
But we promised to give a yeah mug out. And the winner is from Turkey. Long-time listener, CG.
00:01:24
Richard
Yes.
00:01:25
Ben
And here's something. I discovered that he he's actually, we have never called out Turkey in a new Listener Country call out. He listens through Zencast, and I've only just worked it out because it doesn't come up in any of our data.
00:01:39
Richard
Yeah.
00:01:39
Ben
And it's a different set.
00:01:39
Richard
It's a different set, different set of different fade. Yeah.
00:01:43
Ben
So, listener CG, you win the the yeah the BCC mug, and apologies for not calling you out much, much early.
00:01:43
Richard
Yeah.
00:01:51
Ben
He's been in the inner sanctum basically since day one. So, mahabha.
00:01:54
Richard
Awesome.
00:01:56
Ben
Mahabha to CG. And also, te braklash.
00:01:58
Richard
I have a CG.
00:02:00
Ben
Tebrick Lash, which I'm pretty sure I've just butchered congratulations in in Turkish. So there it is. There it is.

Being a Good Dad

00:02:09
Ben
Now, and want want to dive straight into the Fully Awake Project, mate.
00:02:09
Richard
work.
00:02:15
Ben
I said to a mate recently, said to him, you're a good dad.
00:02:16
Richard
Yes.
00:02:19
Ben
And his response was, yeah, I try to be. And I was thinking to myself, yep. Yep, that's the point. You know, you never really know. you just you just keep trying. And so my question to you, what's your definition of being a good dad?
00:02:36
Richard
Yeah, I think it's I'd go with that too. I think it's you you keep trying. you've you've you you it It is relentless some days, but yeah you yeah, you never give up.
00:02:50
Ben
Yeah.
00:02:50
Richard
It reminds me, did you ever see, like I know i'm this is going to date terribly this comment, but did you ever see The Mexican with Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts?
00:02:50
Ben
And it's not...
00:02:56
Ben
Probably.
00:03:00
Ben
I did. Yeah.
00:03:01
Richard
Yeah, so like, you know, like, it's it's like how do you know how do you know you're in love or this is the person for you? And he's like, you just never give up, you never give up.
00:03:09
Ben
Yeah.
00:03:10
Richard
It's like that with kids.
00:03:10
Ben
Yeah. Interesting.
00:03:11
Richard
Yeah.
00:03:12
Ben
yeah Yeah, I like it. that's That's a really good point because it's not about money, is it? It's about it's about attention. I think I've learned that more and more. you know I've got one daughter who's moved out of home now and having her in the home, is i just I just love it.
00:03:26
Ben
like One of my favorite moments from a recent trip was we'd actually gone together in the car and she was singing her heart out. it was like a karaoke session. Now, she's a very good singer, but it was like a personal it was like a personal concert for me while I was driving it.
00:03:44
Ben
And it was... It was awesome. like As a father, it was awesome. And no mean I no, I don't.
00:03:50
Richard
Can you sing along or do you do you get, no, Dad, just no.
00:03:54
Ben
No, I don't. I give her feedback, which I'm i'm pretty sure is ignored, but that's okay because i'm not there's not a musical bone in my body.
00:03:59
Richard
Yeah.
00:04:02
Ben
so So, yeah, it was a lot of fun, a lot of fun.
00:04:04
Richard
You and me both. Yeah.
00:04:07
Ben
Yeah, okay, yeah, just just keep showing up. That's the definition of being a good dad.
00:04:10
Richard
Keep showing up. Yeah, that's right.
00:04:11
Ben
I love it
00:04:12
Richard
Yep.

Cash vs. Cards for Travel

00:04:13
Ben
Hey, in the travel tip of the week, we posed question. Is it better to travel with cash or card? Do you have an opinion on this?
00:04:22
Richard
my So i guess there's there's two parts to that for me.
00:04:27
Ben
Mm-hmm.
00:04:29
Richard
I think if when I was expatting in Bali, you would have a local bank account and you'd use something like TransferWise or Wise as they're known now to sort of send money from Australia across to your Balinese account and then you'd sort of spend locally from that account.
00:04:48
Ben
Yeah, but digitally you're tap tapping, right?
00:04:49
Richard
So, you know yes so yeah no, actually you'd go to an ATM and you wouldn't use a straight ATM. You'd always go to an ATM at a bank that had a security guard out the front and then you'd withdraw cash and then you'd spend cash.
00:05:00
Ben
Yeah. Yeah, okay.
00:05:02
Richard
So that was kind of like how how you sort of how you do it locally there. A lot of places there didn't take card as well, you know if you if you're buying at small places.
00:05:12
Ben
can you can you explain that Can you explain the security guard at the bank? you like So I assume theft and robbery was a big deal.
00:05:21
Richard
No, it's actually, I think it's more for ATM security. So to stop people putting phishing things and and card scanners and skimmers in on the front of the ATM machine.
00:05:32
Richard
So that's what the security guard, is is is my understanding.
00:05:33
Ben
Interesting.
00:05:38
Richard
So like, yeah, Manduri was the bank that I, yeah.
00:05:38
Ben
it's a That's a great travel tip. I did not expect to go there.
00:05:42
Richard
Yeah.
00:05:43
Ben
so So talk me through, have you seen that in other locations outside of Bali?
00:05:47
Richard
Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. There would be locations that were super popular, like at a, say, at a local servo in Ubud. It's a popular intersection. It's like a four-way intersection. The servo's big, maybe eight, ten pumps.
00:06:03
Richard
They've probably got six or eight ATMs there. People who use that all the time would get their car details skimmed. Yeah.
00:06:09
Ben
Really? Okay.
00:06:10
Richard
yeah Yeah, yeah, yeah. This is like a known and bad spot. So yeah, you'd only only use the ATMs at a at at at a bank and only at a bank where they had a security guard.
00:06:13
Ben
Interesting.
00:06:20
Ben
What a...
00:06:20
Richard
then you'd get cash out and then you just spend cash wherever you're going. And one of the things is too, it makes you aware of how much money you're spending.
00:06:23
Ben
Yeah.
00:06:27
Richard
Like in Australia, tapping all the time for stuff, you really don't have...
00:06:28
Ben
Mm-hmm.
00:06:31
Ben
Yep.
00:06:33
Richard
a deep connection to how much money you've spent in it in a day or you know groceries or or or shopping you can just lose track of it so easy but when you've actually got a fork over the cash count it out go slow be more deliberate with it you're like hey wow you know yeah you're
00:06:51
Ben
I probably have a different view on that because my wife's a bookkeeper. And so I'm acutely aware of how much money I'm spending.
00:06:59
Richard
yeah well There you go.
00:07:01
Ben
But it's it's in a good way. I wouldn't have it any other way.
00:07:05
Richard
More friction, I guess, is what I'm saying.
00:07:05
Ben
and in
00:07:06
Richard
Yeah, yeah.
00:07:07
Ben
Yeah, no, fair call. Yeah. and And I think if you read some of those, you know, how to yeah how to be financially independent, they talk about having, you envelopes with the cash in it and how you're going to spend it and that sort of thing.
00:07:19
Ben
And it's it's it it plays right into that. Yeah.
00:07:22
Richard
Yeah, I think travel cards at the go though, if you're, if you're traveling through, lots you know, lots, lots of, uh, lots of countries, you can sort of preload cards at fixed exchange rates before you go.
00:07:34
Ben
Yeah. Yeah. So wise, wise and Revolut are pretty common. I use wise myself, but it's not it's not an advert.
00:07:38
Richard
Yeah.
00:07:40
Ben
I'm sure just get one that's got no fees on it. It's probably my recommendation. Yeah.
00:07:45
Richard
Well, their rates are much lower too. Like I think banks are like 4% or 5% on for fx fees and wise was like, I think 1.4 or 1.7 or something.
00:07:49
Ben
Yeah. Yeah.
00:07:55
Ben
it Yeah, its really I found it really attractive.
00:07:57
Richard
ay Yeah.
00:07:59
Ben
Yeah, I I've got an article link actually which will drop into the show notes which talks about cash versus card and if listeners are interested. Yeah, no, it's good one.
00:08:10
Richard
What do you do, Ben?
00:08:11
Richard
How do you roll?
00:08:12
Ben
Do you know what? I rarely take currency anymore. I i i have been caught out. I got caught out actually in Jakarta where I was in a service, not a service station, like a convenience store trying to tap with my card and I hadn't met their minimum.
00:08:28
Ben
And I had like a bottle of water and a i don't know, probably a pack of lollies for the hotel or something. And they she said she said, you haven't reached your minimum. I was like, okay, can you, I said, this is what I want. Can you just grab me what I need? And she come back with a shopping trolley full of water. Yeah.
00:08:49
Richard
Awesome.
00:08:51
Ben
yeah
00:08:51
Richard
I'm going carry eight litres of water back to the hotel.
00:08:53
Ben
as and our society and And the guy who was with worked out that something wasn't right and came in and just paid cash. And it was like $1.70. It was so it was like a dollar seven it was just the smallest amount of money.
00:09:03
Ben
So i i rarely carry cash, but some of those countries I just find i have to i have to have some.
00:09:04
Richard
Yeah.
00:09:10
Ben
On the flip side, I do carry some US dollars because I find them very very handy for tipping.
00:09:13
Richard
Yeah. Yeah. Lots of people take US dollars too.
00:09:17
Ben
and the and they carry it carries some weight i i hate admitting that uh but that's uh that's the reality so there you go i think it's just i think it's just well recognized
00:09:25
Richard
so like So just to dig into that a bit more, like when you get home from a, yeah you know, a multicurr multi-country holiday and you've got all the currency, do you separate it out into Ziploc bags?
00:09:35
Ben
hmm m
00:09:40
Richard
And every time you do that, I do that.
00:09:40
Ben
No, you see, I'm not Jason Bourne. I'm not Jason Bourne.
00:09:44
Richard
I love the Jason Bourne feeling.
00:09:45
Ben
no
00:09:46
Richard
I've got i've got like about 10 Ziploc bags with different currency in them.
00:09:46
Ben
No, I'm not. I know. That came on a previous episode.
00:09:50
Richard
It's awesome.
00:09:52
Ben
My hack for that is you use the leftover currency as you check out of the hotel and you take no currency home.
00:09:52
Richard
I do it.
00:09:57
Richard
Yes, know, I know.
00:09:59
Ben
So I'm sorry, I'm not i'm not on board.
00:09:59
Richard
Yeah. Oh, man, you're missing out. You're missing out on the born feeling.
00:10:02
Ben
I'm... i've i've I've only fired one revolver in my life and it was and and it was at a it was at a a gun club which actually, listener CG who won the mug took me to.
00:10:15
Ben
And they he said, which which revolver do you want to fire? And I said, I don't know. and I was like, hang on, hang on. And I looked up, I Googled what was Jason Bourne's gun.
00:10:25
Richard
What did you go with? You see went with a Luger or something.
00:10:26
Ben
Sig 26, I don't know. six sig twenty six island Mate, I know nothing about guns, hey, but but but I can say I fired the gun that Jason Bourne fired, but I don't do his cash thing.
00:10:38
Ben
That's that's not where I'm at. so
00:10:39
Richard
There we go.
00:10:41
Ben
All right. So the yeah

Listener's Screen Setup

00:10:43
Ben
where are we up to? Oh, listen to feedback. How many screens do you work with in your in your IT setup, on your on your desk?
00:10:54
Richard
I've got two screens. i've got the laptop screen and a 27-inch 5K screen next to it.
00:11:03
Ben
Okay.
00:11:03
Richard
ye
00:11:04
Ben
Yeah. so And that's the same. I've got two. but like One's closed. The laptop is closed, but it's docked.
00:11:08
Richard
I keep the laptop open can open though.
00:11:08
Ben
so okay Interesting.
00:11:10
Richard
yeah
00:11:11
Ben
Okay. So the reason this came up, listener AT is all in on LCD screens and he thinks they absolutely should be on vacuum cleaners, which I was but then he sent in a photo of his office.
00:11:19
Richard
love it.
00:11:22
Ben
He's got four screens. Now, three are traditional landscape and one was in portrait. And i was just like, what is going on there?
00:11:30
Richard
Is he in desktop? Is he in publishing or something?
00:11:48
Richard
Official friend of the pod. Yeah.
00:11:51
Ben
Thanks to those. That's actually getting some good traction, surprisingly. certain People wanted to listen to us for 90 minutes. And his response was, but does that person have a one keyboard board and a mouse that moves between all three independent machines managing three different AI development platforms at the same time? I had to write that down, and I just thought my head,
00:12:13
Richard
I know very pro, very pro.
00:12:13
Ben
you're You're a

Understanding 'Far-Fetched' in Storytelling

00:12:16
Ben
nerd. is
00:12:17
Richard
so
00:12:19
Ben
Hey, yeah credit to MM on the conundrum of the week this week. He said, when someone says that's a bit far-fetched, what does that mean? And it's a good question. I mean, because if it's far and you didn't tell the story, what why why are we having to fetch it?
00:12:36
Richard
i love far i love it I love far-fetched, actually.
00:12:39
Ben
Do you?
00:12:39
Richard
i love it i i love it I love it as a positioning statement, right?
00:12:40
Ben
Okay, tell me.
00:12:44
Ben
Yeah.
00:12:44
Richard
Because it's it's it's like you're you're like, I'm not buying that story, you know? But it's it's but's it's the it's the it' it's not, i you know, you're a liar,
00:12:52
Ben
Okay.
00:12:59
Ben
Yeah.
00:13:00
Richard
possibly be true yeah it kind of like you know you know oh come on mate that's a bit far-fetched really
00:13:01
Ben
eager You can dismiss them.
00:13:06
Ben
Oh, so you're implying that they've actually, they've the storyteller's gone far to fetch the story. Yeah, okay. Okay, I can get on board with that.
00:13:13
Richard
yeah unpacked a conundrum successfully
00:13:14
Ben
Okay, we've so we've actually finally solved a conundrum. That's unlike us. That's

Episode Conclusion and Next Week's Teaser

00:13:20
Ben
unlike us. Hey, that's it, Richard. Listeners have been BCC'd on our week. Listeners, thanks for joining us. We'd love to hear from you. We need some listener feedback as always. Get in touch through the links in the show notes. Send us an email if you wish. That's still the easiest way to get in touch. In next week's show, we are going to discuss skills that still elude us.
00:13:42
Ben
See you next week. Bravo, Charlie Club. Out.
00:13:46
Richard
And that's the pod.
