00:00:06
Richard
Welcome to the Bravo Charlie Club podcast, making you 12 and a half minutes more awesome each week. He's Ben, I'm Richard. Let's go. ben how are you doing this week?
00:00:17
Ben
Amazing, mate.

Welcoming the Philippines and Language Influence

00:00:18
Ben
It's been a cracking week and it's great to be here with you and to call out our new listener country, which is the Philippines.
00:00:26
Richard
The Philippines.
00:00:26
Ben
Kamas, kamas, kamas, kamas, which is hello, how are you? It's got a bit of a Spanish tingle to it, I think.
00:00:31
Richard
Come on, St. Kahn. Nice.
00:00:34
Ben
I wonder what the heritage of the Philippines language
00:00:34
Richard
Don't worry.
00:00:39
Ben
But there you go. Welcome to our Filipino friends.

The Value of Friendship

00:00:42
Ben
Hey, mate, in the Fully Awake project this week, just going to touch on something which i know i've raised before but we've got a podcast platform that we can use and abuse and i want to use it for this purpose yeah yeah not not really i just want to say again how how good are mates like friday afternoon i had an impending disaster like de disaster with a capital z and
00:00:54
Richard
We do. We do. Are you getting on your soapbox, Ben? Get up there. Go for it. Not really. Mates are awesome. Yep.
00:01:12
Ben
I rang mate and I said, is there any chance to swing by? And we're talking like 3.30 on a Friday. And he was like, yeah, sure, no worries. Not only did he drive me to where I had to go, then drove me back.
00:01:26
Ben
It was unreal. And like no one wants to be doing anything on a Friday afternoon at 3.30 except going home.
00:01:27
Richard
That is awesome.
00:01:33
Richard
No. Yeah.
00:01:34
Ben
And he just did it like it was the most natural

Melbourne Hospitality Gratitude

00:01:37
Ben
thing in the world. so And then the second, mate, I want to shout out to As I mentioned, my wife and I went to the Melbourne Grand Prix.
00:01:45
Ben
We stayed with friends in Melbourne. Now, I'm pretty sure he could have rented that room for about a billion dollars given
00:01:52
Richard
Yeah.
00:01:54
Ben
given given how many people try to get into Melbourne and get into the, you know, for accommodation.
00:01:59
Richard
It goes it's crazy. The place just packs out.
00:02:00
Ben
It's nuts.
00:02:01
Richard
Yeah.
00:02:01
Ben
It's nuts.
00:02:02
Richard
Yeah.
00:02:02
Ben
You know what? He gave it to me. And during the event, we went on the Saturday and the Sunday, he drove us to the event both days. Mates are awesome.
00:02:10
Richard
Oh, well legend.
00:02:13
Ben
So...
00:02:14
Richard
Mates are awesome.
00:02:14
Ben
Yeah.

Humorous Belt Hanger Anecdote

00:02:15
Ben
So, and now it's going to come around in circles because i'm doing a renovation here and I'm hoping, you know, that I'll be able to pay it forward or or pay it backward, you know, into the to my mate in Melbourne.
00:02:25
Richard
Hmm.
00:02:26
Ben
During this renovation, I'm looking for a belt hanger, right, to go in the in the new robe that we're putting in. And I found one. It's got, it holds 42 belts.
00:02:39
Richard
42 belts.
00:02:40
Ben
fortyt two
00:02:42
Richard
That is, that's insane. Ben, how many belts do you own? I know how many belts I own. How many do you own?
00:02:49
Ben
I own three. And I'm going to wear two of them.
00:02:52
Richard
That's one more than me.
00:02:56
Ben
I think I just forgot to throw them out. owns 42 well
00:03:00
Richard
i don't know. I don't know, but they need that hanger. That's, uh,
00:03:03
Ben
Why is that a thing? like Could you imagine what kind of person that you would have to be to, like, how often are you going shopping for a belt?
00:03:06
Richard
yeah
00:03:13
Ben
Like...
00:03:13
Richard
But, yeah, it's yeah, i don't know.
00:03:15
Ben
okay
00:03:16
Richard
I've lost for words. 42 belts, that's a lot of how many ties? Maybe you could use it for ties as well.
00:03:21
Ben
Probably.
00:03:21
Richard
How many ties have you got?
00:03:21
Ben
but but how many ties do you own?
00:03:25
Richard
Me?
00:03:26
Ben
Yeah.
00:03:26
Richard
i've got I've got three three ties in the this table, all
00:03:28
Ben
Same.
00:03:31
Ben
I've got all the same colour.
00:03:33
Richard
but I've got the i've got look a charcoal medium. I've got a black thick and a black thin.
00:03:38
Ben
Okay.
00:03:39
Richard
So I'm ready.
00:03:39
Ben
we
00:03:39
Richard
I'm ready when the style changes, Ben.
00:03:40
Ben
Yeah. Yeah.
00:03:42
Richard
I'm going back there.
00:03:42
Ben
Well, I'm the same.
00:03:43
Richard
Yes.
00:03:43
Ben
i've got I've got one thin, one medium, and one thick tie, knowing that two two of them are out of fashion at any particular time. The funny thing is I usually choose the out of fashion one, no matter what the momentum is.
00:03:56
Ben
So i like I'm not a tie wearer. I think that those times are behind me. But i if I have to, i'll will wear them. And they're...
00:04:03
Richard
Well, weddings and funerals, right? I think there's a, yeah.
00:04:05
Ben
Yeah, actually, even the the last funeral I went to, I didn't wear a tie.
00:04:06
Richard
yeah
00:04:10
Richard
You were Tyler's.
00:04:15
Ben
My old man might have worn one, actually. But yeah, that's that's his style. He wants to, you know, he wants to present well. Yeah, interesting.
00:04:23
Ben
Interesting.
00:04:24
Richard
There we go.
00:04:25
Ben
Hey,
00:04:25
Richard
42 belts. So anyway.
00:04:27
Ben
So I could just do some shopping. If oh if if if anyone goes on Amazon, there'll be a 39 hook belt hanger.
00:04:29
Richard
Perhaps you could just cut a bit off the edge and then sell it on. I'll take 10. Yeah.
00:04:42
Ben
That's an unusual number. Who owns 39 belts? I'll put that on my podcast. LAUGHTER
00:04:47
Richard
Yeah.
00:04:54
Ben
cheapest This could go

Travel Tips for Long-Haul Flights

00:04:55
Ben
on forever. Hey, like we we said that we would talk about long haul flying in our travel tip of the week segment.
00:05:03
Richard
Yes.
00:05:04
Ben
I've done a little bit of flying. Some of it has been long haul recently. Hydration is obviously key. i I don't think you can drink enough water on these flights. But I've recently discovered earplugs for flights. Now, I'm a big wearer of earplugs, but I'm not talking about just for noise. I'm talking about for pressure release.
00:05:25
Richard
Really? Does that help?
00:05:25
Ben
and so yeah i've felt so much better at the end of flights you on a long haul you would wear them in the first hour in the last hour of the flight my my wife wears pressure release earplugs the whole hole
00:05:36
Richard
Yeah. Yeah.
00:05:40
Richard
With your noise cancelling headphones over the top.
00:05:42
Ben
Yep. Yep.
00:05:43
Richard
Yeah.
00:05:43
Ben
Absolutely.
00:05:43
Richard
Okay.
00:05:51
Richard
Mm-hmm.
00:05:54
Ben
all sorts of problems trying to find earplugs that fit She's got tiny little petite ears cause she's a tiny little petite woman. but we, we eventually got there and now she travels very, very happily.
00:06:06
Ben
So it's a good thing.
00:06:06
Richard
Fantastic.
00:06:07
Ben
Yeah. What are your tips, mate? my I always think you need to you need to download your own movies, right?
00:06:13
Richard
i've got I've got the classic, you know, do as I say, not as I do tip because i'm I'm often boarding the plane and then remembering, oh, yeah, I should download something to watch.
00:06:18
Ben
Okay, run with it.
00:06:25
Richard
And so quickly, know, like, oh,
00:06:25
Ben
Oh, God, you're that guy in the queue with the with laptop open. Yeah.
00:06:30
Richard
Well, just actually with the with the phone, just trying to pull movies down over the cell phone. And like it depending on where you are in whatever airport you are, the reception's kind of decreasing, dropping off a cliff the further you get onto the to the plane.
00:06:36
Ben
Good.
00:06:42
Ben
Yeah. what What could go wrong trying to download 500 megabytes over mobile network inside of a metal metal box?
00:06:45
Richard
Yeah,
00:06:49
Richard
yeah. yeah
00:06:51
Ben
Yeah. well
00:06:52
Richard
giant metal box here but uh yeah this because the in-flight entertainment can be can be pretty patchy and you're never quite sure what you get often they'll have a headline movie or two that you may or may not have seen and then the rest of them are like oh great i can watch x-men again or yeah goodwill hunting again
00:07:01
Ben
I agree. Yeah.
00:07:07
Ben
Yeah. I think that' and that's the call out, right? If you're not traveling... If you're not traveling regularly and they sell it to you, they're like, oh, and you've got access to our in-flight entertainment. But, yeah, you're like, there might be one or two movies on a 14-hour flight.
00:07:20
Ben
What do you do for the the other 10 hours?
00:07:22
Richard
Yeah.
00:07:23
Ben
So, yeah, I always carry a book, carry my, you know, obviously download podcasts, download this podcast for our listeners.
00:07:24
Richard
well
00:07:31
Richard
Exactly.
00:07:31
Richard
can take gas on the plane with you. But also you've got internet these days too.
00:07:31
Ben
all And, yeah, if you don't have auto.
00:07:36
Ben
Yeah.
00:07:36
Richard
So you can,
00:07:37
Ben
okay

Why is the Podcast 12.5 Minutes?

00:07:37
Richard
if it's included in your ticket, you can just, sometimes it's not, sometimes it is.
00:07:40
Ben
Which sometimes it's not. Yeah.
00:07:43
Richard
Sometimes you have to pay 20 bucks for it. But like, if you're going to make the plunge, get it, get it at the start of the flight, not two hours from the end when you're bored, because otherwise you might as well just use it the whole way.
00:07:54
Ben
Yeah. my My daughter's worked it out. She puts in my seat number because she knows that I have free access to the internet including included in my ticket.
00:08:06
Ben
So she ain't silly.
00:08:06
Richard
nice
00:08:07
Ben
She ain't silly. There you go. Hey, listen to feedback this week. Here's a good one. You can answer this.
00:08:13
Richard
yeah
00:08:14
Ben
Listen to TH asks, how we came up with the 12 and a half minute listener promise.
00:08:20
Richard
yeah we get that a little bit don't we people asking about the 12 and a half minutes it's an interesting one i think we do
00:08:22
Ben
Yeah. We probably need to cover it off.
00:08:28
Richard
Well, I mean, i don't know, do we we sort of stumbled onto 12 and a half minutes, really. It sort of seemed like a good bite-sized chunk. It seemed to be enough to sort of get into something, but not not your 20-minute commitment.
00:08:37
Ben
Yeah. Yeah.
00:08:40
Richard
sort of if you Something that you can yeah take in in a sitting without having it imposed too much on your time, I think.
00:08:49
Ben
That's a better recollection than mine. I was thinking, I was telling you a book about the yeah
00:08:55
Richard
10 minutes too short, 15 too long.
00:08:56
Ben
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, that's it I was telling you about a book called Never Split the Difference. And then when we were trying to work out the podcast, we were like, should it be 10 or 15 minutes? And then we' we're like, oh, we'll just split the difference.
00:09:07
Ben
And like we did it did the exact opposite, as usual, as as to what all of the assets and material around us. But it it resonates. A lot of people say it's just perfect.
00:09:18
Ben
They can listen to one on a podcast.
00:09:19
Richard
That's the perfect time slot. What did you think of the book, by the way? Never split the

Negotiation Insights from 'Never Split the Difference'

00:09:22
Richard
difference. I haven't read it.
00:09:23
Ben
it it was It was interesting. So Chris Voss was an ex-FBI hostage negotiator. And, you know, he's gone on and and since subsequently made a book about negotiation skills.
00:09:29
Richard
Yeah.
00:09:34
Ben
And it was, yeah, interesting. I think that i've I've read other negotiation books from the, probably from the 70s and 80s based on when I would have been reading them.
00:09:45
Ben
And a lot of the principles haven't changed. like i'm I'm not aware of those hostage scenarios. That's not world that I'm familiar with or played in. So some of the stuff he was referring to more sounded like, you know, movies rather than actual real life.
00:10:02
Ben
That's not going to happen in in any in any boardroom that I'm sitting in.
00:10:03
Richard
Yeah. Right. Yep.
00:10:06
Richard
right
00:10:07
Ben
So, yeah, look, it was interesting enough. But yeah. I think, you as as we've said before, you you pluck a feather from every passing goose. So, yeah, interesting. So there we are. We didn't really solve it. I think we basically said it should be 10 or 15 minutes and then just went in the middle.
00:10:23
Ben
And sometimes we even hit 12 and a half minutes too. Yeah.
00:10:26
Richard
As long as I do, it's happened it a few times.
00:10:28
Ben
no
00:10:30
Ben
So there you go. Listeners can leave a comment, send us a text, join the Inner Sanctum. We're posting links and tips up there all the time. Hopefully having a bit of fun in there. Links are always in the show notes.
00:10:41
Ben
Conundra of the week, mate, do you leave voice messages

The Relevance of Voicemail Today

00:10:45
Ben
anymore? And, you know, especially, especially here's the scenario. If the message says, don't leave a message, what's your take on voice messages?
00:10:53
Richard
I'm... I don't leave a message. In fact, I don't even get to the message that tells me not to leave a message. I'm I've, I've pulled the pin before then. So, uh, I probably, yeah, pretty much.
00:11:04
Ben
Interesting. Now, were you always like that?
00:11:08
Richard
I'll shoot a text through if it's, uh, if it's urgent or I'll call back later.
00:11:09
Ben
Okay. Yeah.
00:11:14
Ben
Okay. you're not expecting them to return a hang-up. You're, in your mind, just going to try again later.
00:11:22
Richard
Yeah. Yeah.
00:11:24
Ben
I think you're not.
00:11:24
Richard
Like if I need, if I'm calling, if I'm actually calling, then there's probably something that I feel like I need to call about.
00:11:27
Ben
Yeah.
00:11:30
Richard
But if I'm, if I'm just trying to contact, like I might, like, let's say if it's a trainee coming around to the house or something, I might leave a message. Hey, you know, this is the third time you haven't turned up.
00:11:43
Richard
You're actually going to come around.
00:11:44
Ben
o a
00:11:47
Richard
Please call me sometime.
00:11:48
Ben
I hear you.
00:11:49
Richard
Yeah.
00:11:50
Ben
you know You shouldn't beg though. yeah
00:11:52
Richard
No, you think begging's bad? Never split the difference, hey?
00:11:54
Ben
the yeah i think i think you're optimistic like just thinking that you'll ring back though. like I'll tell you. Yeah.
00:12:02
Richard
Yeah, well, I will pester. I i am happy to continue to continue calling until until I've got ad satisfaction.
00:12:04
Ben
then
00:12:07
Ben
Interesting. Interesting.
00:12:10
Richard
But like, you know, if it's in the morning, I might do another call in the afternoon or I might do another call the next day. Like i'm not going to call every 10 minutes or anything.
00:12:18
Ben
Yeah. So if if I'm ringing like a person I don't know, I'll always leave a voice message. But if I'm ringing someone who's in my contacts, as an example,
00:12:30
Ben
I'll just, if I get their voicemail, I'll just hang up and send a message saying what I was calling for. And if it's work-related, I'll say what the priority level is.
00:12:40
Ben
Because, like, if I'm, so if if I was trying to get in contact with someone I work with, you know, they might, yeah I don't want them to drop everything because I was trying to call them. if it wasn't a high priority item.
00:12:51
Ben
and And honestly, in my work, hopefully you don't have too many high priority items. So the project work can be high priority, but not day-to-day calls.
00:12:55
Richard
Yes.
00:13:00
Ben
It should just be return it when you can. But what I've found is if I shoot a message saying what I was calling for, when they call back, they remind me what what I was calling for.
00:13:09
Richard
yeah
00:13:11
Ben
and And so it actually helps me.
00:13:11
Richard
That's nice. That's a bit clever hack.
00:13:12
Ben
So I can...
00:13:13
Richard
Yeah.
00:13:14
Ben
So I can stop thinking about what I was calling them for and just wait for them to call me back and i say, oh, you were calling me about Oh, yeah, that's right. And then away the way the conversation goes.
00:13:24
Richard
Nice.
00:13:24
Ben
so But I think we're moving away from don't think voicemail is going to be a thing soon.
00:13:30
Richard
Yeah.
00:13:30
Ben
i don't know i don't know what the timeline is. I don't know what soon is. But, yeah, I think we're moving away from it for sure. I don't know, maybe AI will take over.
00:13:41
Ben
AI is taking over everything. It might as well take over voicemail as well.
00:13:43
Richard
It is taking over everything. Yep.
00:13:45
Ben
There you go.
00:13:46
Richard
It's my fault.
00:13:47
Ben
It is your fault. It

AI's Impact and Future Episode Teaser

00:13:48
Ben
is your fault. We're going to do we're goingnna do a full AI hour, reckon.
00:13:52
Richard
We should do it AI deep dive, shouldn't we?
00:13:54
Ben
Yeah, deep deep dive.
00:13:54
Richard
Yeah.
00:13:55
Ben
yeah It won't be for every listener and we'll we'll make a call out so they know. But yeah, full AI deep dive so that you can really get into the weeds. I think that'll be a bit of fun. All right, that's it, Richard.
00:14:05
Ben
Listeners have been BCC'd on our week. In the next week's show, we're going to talk about the secret life of luggage once you've checked it in. See you next week.
00:14:15
Richard
oh
00:14:16
Ben
Bravo, Charlie Club. Out.
00:14:19
Richard
And that's the pod.
