Introductions and Jakarta Life
00:00:08
Richard
Welcome to the Bravo Charlie Club podcast, making you 12 and a half minutes more awesome each week. He's Ben, I'm Richard. Let's go. Ben, how are you this week?
00:00:19
Ben
I'm well made and hello from Jakarta. um
00:00:23
Ben
Let me tell you, you in Australia how if you're in Sydney, people ask you where you live and in Brisbane they ask you what school you went to. Melbourne they ask you what footy team you go to.
00:00:34
Ben
In Jakarta, it's like a national obligation to ask how was the traffic. So, yeah. so
00:00:40
Richard
Is the answer always bad?
00:00:41
Ben
Yeah. oh it Well, I arrived on the weekend, so it was it was okay. And I think the follow-up question is to apologize. Well, not question, but follow-up statement is to apologize for internet stability.
00:00:53
Ben
So, you know, we're we're recording, um you know, on our own steam at the moment, so we'll see how we go.
00:01:00
Richard
Living dangerously. Living dangerously.
Van Halen's Brown M&Ms and Personal Riders
00:01:04
Ben
Hey, listen, the Fully Awake project this week, I wanted to ask, you know how um you know bands when they're travelling have writers and actors when they're making movies have writers?
00:01:15
Ben
It's the things that are put into their green room and stuff.
00:01:16
Richard
Oh yeah, in that in the contract.
00:01:18
Ben
Yeah. So a famous one is is um Van Halen having no brown M&Ms in their green room.
00:01:23
Richard
I love the history behind that too, right?
00:01:26
Ben
Do you know the story? you want to You want to tell it?
00:01:27
Richard
Yeah, yeah. Yeah, well, so that it was so like it was buried so like really deep in the contract, wasn't it Like page 85 or something or other.
00:01:35
Richard
And really it was so that they wanted to know if the contract had been read for the about the stage set up and sound and all the, you know, if things were the the way they wanted it.
00:01:46
Richard
So that was their that was their sort of like Easter egg, I guess, in there to see if it, yeah.
00:01:48
Ben
that was a test yeah it's a fun story hey so anyway my question to you is my question to you is what would be in your writer if you're a traveling you travelling yeah musician or famous podcast host yeah
00:01:53
Richard
Yeah, it's awesome. Yeah.
00:02:01
Richard
Oh, if i was give it Given the amount of musical skill I possess, Ben, I think there's a little chance of that happening. But if I was to be talented in that way, I think i'd I'd go for probably something more practical, I think.
00:02:16
Richard
Maybe maybe a stack of white T-shirts.
00:02:18
Richard
Here we go. a stack of eight Uniqlo white T-shirts.
00:02:23
Ben
Okay, so um first of all, you said practical. Why it is not very practical if you're seeing me eat.
00:02:28
Richard
I've got heaps of them.
00:02:29
Richard
I can just get one a day and get rid of it. I can give them away. I can sign them and give them to my fans, Ben.
00:02:33
Ben
why? Why eight? oh Oh, if you're signing one, can I have the first one?
00:02:39
Richard
I'm super fan, Ben.
00:02:40
Ben
But ah eight is a weird number.
00:02:42
Ben
Why not 80 then if you...
00:02:43
Richard
Well, it's because yeah it it can't be too over the top, but it's got to be doable, right?
00:02:47
Richard
So, um ah you know, I think otherwise you just say, you know, want to Lambo at every yeah every event I'm going to.
00:02:48
Ben
Yeah, fair enough. Fair enough.
00:02:55
Richard
That doesn't seem practical.
00:02:56
Richard
So besides that, that you can't take them in carry-on.
00:03:02
Ben
Yes. we just be odd if you just signed them and left them back in the room. And they're like, he wanted these and now he's written all over them. the ah
00:03:12
Richard
How about you, Ben? What's your rider?
Sparkling Water Preferences and Eco-Initiatives
00:03:15
Ben
ah Look, you know um when I travel, I'm i'm actually very fortunate. I'm in a level where you get access to the club lounge and it's know it's an included it's an included perk.
00:03:25
Ben
I get nervous just asking him for sparkling water. Like, it's not, I don't, it's not, it's not something, it's not my, it's not who I am. But I do like sparkling water.
00:03:36
Richard
But do you notice the variation in sparkling water between the cheap stuff that has the really big bubbles and the sort of like the fine stuff that has the really little bubbles?
00:03:43
Ben
Is that the variation? I don't.
00:03:45
Richard
I think so. Yeah. Really, it's the only thing that's in there, isn't it?
00:03:48
Richard
It's the carbonation.
00:03:50
Ben
Yeah. I love the bubbles. So, yeah.
00:03:52
Richard
You like the bubbles.
00:03:53
Richard
All bubbles. Big bubbles, small bubbles.
00:03:54
Ben
i just drink I just have a soda stream at home to save on plastic.
00:03:58
Ben
That was an initiative from my wife. um And with, i don't know how many turtles we've saved across the journey because I use that, you three times a day so because I love it. So yeah, look, there you go. Sparkling water would be in my rider for sure. um But yeah, I'm like you, I'm not convinced anyone's reaching out to me to star in a movie in a in a hurry.
00:04:22
Ben
Very, very indie if it is. Hey, listen, travel tip of
Travel Tips: Using eSIM Cards Effectively
00:04:27
Ben
the week. I'm in Jakarta and I actually, um and it came through Singapore.
00:04:28
Richard
You are? Yes. On location. Yep.
00:04:31
Ben
So i just thought that I would share um how to avoid roaming charges when using your eSIM. um You don't actually have to do this to use your eSIM, but here's here's the settings that can help you um to get the best value. So you put your your phone into airplane or flight mode and then you turn off your primary SIM, which is in the mobile settings.
00:04:55
Ben
um But then specifically, you need to turn off data roaming, which you know sort of goes against what you're what you think you're trying to do because you're going overseas. But you actually don't want your primary sim to roam.
00:05:08
Ben
um And now some of the eSims when you load and will actually do this for you. um But a pro tip um is actually to turn off those apps that use mobile mobile network or mobile data to update. um And a big one, which a daughter of mine who was an avid photographer got trapped by, was your photos can back up over mobile data.
00:05:33
Ben
And she chewed through seven days worth of her eSIM in just an afternoon of taking photos when we were traveling once. It was a cheap lesson, but, you know, because you just top up the eSIM.
00:05:48
Ben
But it was good to know. And then the whole family, you know, went to our phones to check that we weren't using this. You know, we had that turned off as well.
00:05:56
Richard
You know, and I've got a funny story about that. i um just to Just to jump in as a quick segue, we were we went to um went to Rome and i i ah long story, the selfie stick story.
00:06:09
Richard
It's a it's a funny story. I'll save it for another time. Anyway, i got the selfie stick. We are there at the Coliseum taking pictures. And of course, the selfie stick lasted 45 minutes before it broke and it jammed on.
00:06:20
Richard
um This is, you know back in the days before you sort of had ah rapid capture and it and it took about 280 pictures in rapid succession with this when the thing jammed on and then it all synced to iCloud and smashed through my mobile data in no time at all.
00:06:28
Ben
Oh, wow. So it's a movie.
00:06:39
Richard
So anyway, um yeah, I've been bitten by that before.
00:06:42
Richard
So I know ah know the pain.
00:06:43
Ben
I love it. You know what I'm talking about. um Just another follow-up with eSIMS. I've previously used region-specific eSIMS bought one if I was going into Singapore and then bought one to go to another.
00:06:56
Richard
ah So you turn up in Singapore and get it at the airport sort of thing?
00:06:58
Ben
Yeah, and just turn it on.
00:07:00
Ben
but um you can you can also get um like asia sims or europe sims or you know um america's s sims and it's and it's worth i actually switched to a global sim uh and i noticed like moving from seeing uh across to jakarta you know i was on singtel while i was there and then it switched over to um the local service here so um Well worth it.
00:07:25
Ben
and And if I've got my maths right and I'm only using it for ride-sharing apps and quick, you know, Safari searches and Google Translate, I've got a Google Translate story to tell you as well, um then then my data should last for the
Language Mishaps and Boneless Chicken
00:07:40
Ben
I have to look this up very quickly because I was at breakfast this morning and I needed to find out what a um tongue cup was and the Google Translate was...
00:07:53
Ben
caught chicken uh now i assume i did some it was supposed be boneless chicken and but it came it translated it was the worst translation ever as caught chicken i'm like i can tell that's been caught because it's literally sitting cooked in front of me there is nothing free range about that chicken
00:08:07
Richard
Because it's gross.
00:08:14
Richard
And did you enjoy your caught chicken? Was it good?
00:08:16
Ben
I did. I did. ate too much as usual. But the the theory is eat breakfast and dinner. So you can spend the spend the day tra trip tripping.
Is There Money in Podcasting?
00:08:26
Ben
Hey, listen to feedback, mate. ah PD has feedback. And simply that there's no money in podcasts, get a real job. Good
00:08:36
Richard
had to tell that to Joe Rogan.
00:08:39
Richard
Or Stephen Bartlett.
00:08:40
Ben
I think Joe and Stephen are both going okay.
00:08:45
Richard
think they're doing it right, yeah.
00:08:46
Ben
yeah So why not leave a comment, one more positive than Peter's? Send us a text or join the Inner Sanctum on WhatsApp.
Defining the 'Best Thing Ever'
00:08:54
Ben
We'll put those links in the show notes. The conundrum this week, mate, we mentioned I was visiting my parents for Christmas and at one stage dad was packing this jacket into a bag and he said he was packing it away and he's like, this is the best thing ever.
00:09:08
Ben
And it just got me thinking, like, is it? Is it really? Like, it's a big call to say a jacket that folds up into a bag is the best thing ever. But then i was like,
00:09:18
Richard
is that is that So that's one of those jackets that's actually got like the little bag thing built in. So it kind of folds up into a little pouch and you just sort of zip it and then there it is.
00:09:23
Ben
Yeah. Yeah. Which is cool. So if he gets caught, and look, don't get me wrong, it's very handy. Like if you get caught in ah in a rain and sun shower or whatever, you know, you can rip that out and away you go.
00:09:35
Ben
But then I was trying to think, well, don't actually have a counter argument. Like the best thing ever is a pretty big call, you know.
00:09:43
Richard
Does seem pretty big.
00:09:43
Ben
We slice toast is often used in that mention, but you know, I asked you last week, yeah, slice bread.
00:09:48
Richard
Slice bread. Yeah, yeah, Toasters.
00:09:51
Ben
Yeah. I asked you last week to do some research on this. What did, what did you come up with?
00:09:57
Richard
want to cop out. No. Well, I mean, AI would have you believe it's the wheel and it's kind of hard to hard to argue against the wheel.
00:10:09
Richard
Reasonably transformative tech at the time. And, yeah, I don't know. It's quite personal though, isn't it? The best thing ever.
00:10:18
Ben
Yeah, it is, I suppose. like I mean, if I circle back to my movie writer, I guess for me it's sparkling water. Yeah.
00:10:26
Ben
And for you it's eight Uniqlo T-shirts.
00:10:33
Ben
Oh, my goodness. Yeah, okay. So, well, at least we're true to true to brand and we're continuing to not do research. um if you've come up
00:10:43
Ben
If you've come up short, well, perhaps we can ask our listeners to write in and and ask what the and tell us what the best thing ever is. I did put a ah poll in the inner sanctum and we got we got a few and I put a few little primers like um you know robot vacuums and and flight, travel by air
00:11:03
Richard
Robot vacuums are really cool. I think.
00:11:05
Ben
Yeah. So, you know, I think there's a section, in fact, mate of mine just um bought one and he was telling me just how, you know even if it does 90% of what you would do as a, ah you know, yourself, it's just a massive, massive, massive win.
00:11:19
Ben
And, um, yeah, convinced me to to sort of head out and take a look at the technology too.
00:11:24
Richard
I think particularly if you've got pets too, because there's always hair and footprints and other sorts of things around the place.
00:11:31
Richard
And so robot vacuum cleaner, awesome.
00:11:35
Ben
So, but I left in the poll, I left an opportunity for listeners to privately message us with what they thought the best thing ever was if it wasn't listed. And we did get um a response and it was quite simple. He said, my my daughters are the best thing ever.
00:11:52
Ben
And um as a father, i can absolutely resonate
00:11:57
Ben
um Given that I know my wife is listening, I'll say my daughters are the second best thing ever.
00:12:03
Richard
Oh, well played Ben.
00:12:04
Ben
yeah Yeah, think this episode probably drops around her birthday too.
00:12:09
Ben
So there we go. we I'm getting in early with the brownie points.
Episode Wrap-Up and Teasers
00:12:13
Ben
um Hey, that's it, Richard. Listeners have been BCC'd on our week. In next week's show, like I'm going to ask you, why don't restaurants' menus have bigger fonts?
00:12:25
Ben
So see you next week. Bravo, Charlie Club, out.
00:12:29
Richard
And that's the pod.
