Ryan Coakley
I'm good, man.
Podcast Jingle and Crossover Episode
00:00:46
Ryan Coakley
I didn't realize how much better you guys jingle is than ours.
00:00:50
Denis Tyrell
It's pretty jingly, dude. It's all of garden commercial as well.
00:00:52
Ryan Coakley
like, burn but different.
00:00:54
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, we've seen it's been in an olive garden cushion.
00:00:58
Denis Tyrell
And then Dennis, funny story. He sends me this like the random reel the other day. This is a couple months back. And it's about like a mattress. It's like two people talking about sleeping.
00:01:11
Denis Tyrell
on a new bed. And I'm like, what the hell is this about? Like, and it took me like three times listening to it. And then finally I heard our, our thing. And I'm like, Oh, we've been stolen again.
00:01:24
Denis Tyrell
it took me a hot minute, but yeah. So you are ah here with us too. Cause we did a crossover episode and there was a lot of back and forth and I'm really surprised that it's been this long and you're finally getting your time over here. So for that,
00:01:40
Denis Tyrell
I apologize. it's not like you would hold this against us and maybe not listen to our podcast for any reason because of that.
00:01:46
Ryan Coakley
Oh, I've been boycotting you.
00:01:48
Denis Tyrell
Boycotting, really?
00:01:49
Ryan Coakley
Yeah, I felt slighted. And I thought it was because ah Dennis didn't like me anymore because he came on our show for the crossover and we interviewed somebody together.
00:02:01
Denis Tyrell
and didn yeah, that's not none of that is true. i do know that all all of that. um I still can't figure out how it. Why we didn't...
00:02:14
Denis Tyrell
How that didn't work out, though.
00:02:14
Ryan Coakley
so in the group chat, there was concern that four crossover episodes in a row would get kind of bland. And I volunteered to be the odd man out.
00:02:27
Ryan Coakley
So all this, like I'm salty, I'm not salty.
00:02:30
Ryan Coakley
I just love talking shit. And that's why you and I vibe. but
00:02:34
Denis Tyrell
That's right.
00:02:35
Ryan Coakley
So like, yeah, I, I knew that it was going to be months.
00:02:39
Denis Tyrell
what Have you...
00:02:39
Ryan Coakley
I haven't listened to the, I haven't listened to the show Because i like music in my ears and kill Tony and Matt and Shane's Secret Podcast. And that's pretty much the only... I don't even listen to my own podcast.
00:02:53
Denis Tyrell
Have you said that you're boycotting us?
00:02:56
Ryan Coakley
um Several times on my show. But if you had listened, which you did not...
00:03:00
Denis Tyrell
Oh, man. Where's the crickets at?
00:03:05
Ryan Coakley
You would have known that also. So like...
00:03:12
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, about that. I hadn't quite heard it because I have unofficially been boycotting. ah you guys are going to fall into that as well. But this is completely due to very unfortunate circumstances in my life that have caused me to be very, very busy and completely overwhelmed and isolated into a small bubble of my own thoughts.
00:03:32
Denis Tyrell
So I didn't even know and I didn't even get the opportunity to feel slighted until right now.
00:03:38
Ryan Coakley
Obviously, Dennis didn't
Cultural Exchange and Humor
00:03:42
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, well, yeah, he's pretty self-absorbed anyway, so.
00:03:47
Denis Tyrell
that's That's probably the reason why he felt slighted, because he's just, you know, doing his normal dentist thing.
00:03:52
Ryan Coakley
Well, and then in the group chat, he was like, you're full of shit. The term Cobra chickens isn't real or whatever he said. I'm paraphrasing.
00:04:01
Ryan Coakley
And I was like, obviously, it's real because we say it on our show. It's in one of our ads. I saw it on Letter letter Kenny Shorzy and I'm pretty sure Trailer Park Boys.
00:04:07
Denis Tyrell
That is the...
00:04:12
Denis Tyrell
It's official word for me. It's all I know it from too as well.
00:04:14
Ryan Coakley
Yeah. There was two of them flying over my house the other day and I was like, oh, a couple cobra chickens.
00:04:21
Denis Tyrell
I never, I've never seen one.
00:04:23
Ryan Coakley
I think he's been American.
00:04:23
Denis Tyrell
It's like, it's like a dragon to me.
00:04:28
Ryan Coakley
I mean, they kind of act like dragons. They're fucking mean, man.
00:04:32
Denis Tyrell
That's what I hear.
00:04:33
Ryan Coakley
Yeah, they're not cool birds. Like, you don't run up to a Canadian goose and throw bread at it.
00:04:41
Ryan Coakley
It's like, you're throwing bread at me, dude? Come on.
00:04:44
Denis Tyrell
He's going to fuck you up you what What do you want, sonfucker?
00:04:45
Ryan Coakley
Oh, yeah. oh Oh, yeah. and I'll tell you a story about them, okay? When I was a little kid, when i was a little kid my mom and her ex-husband took us camping, and we had to canoe to this little island on this lake in Maine.
00:05:01
Ryan Coakley
And we're canoeing across the lake. I'm in the boat with my stepdad. And two Canadian geese, we were apparently in their hood, start coming down and they like hover above you kind of and like flop their wings.
00:05:16
Ryan Coakley
what They get like close and they try and nip at you.
00:05:20
Ryan Coakley
And my stepdad baseball batted one of them with a paddle in the chest and it took it. Just like, oh, man, they're mean, dude. they're meande
00:05:31
Denis Tyrell
No shit. So one time, since we're telling fucking covert chicken stories here, one time at band camp, I got locked inside of a, I got locked inside of a, so half of my family ah lives in the, in like the,
00:05:48
Denis Tyrell
the country of California, like the central Valley and a real rural. And we have a lot of animals and shit had on a lot of land. And I got my cousins because I was from the city thought it was funny. They locked me in the kitchen and the in the kitchen, the chicken coop, but they had just caught a wild Turkey.
00:06:09
Denis Tyrell
And the only reason why I, I, I even begin to tell the story is because when you were going like this, the, you know, like that big wing thing. I wish you guys could see this.
00:06:19
Ryan Coakley
Yeah, they they try and look bit the for the listeners. They try and look big. So they stick their wings out to the side and like flap them like that.
00:06:27
Denis Tyrell
Oh my God. And I apologize for the, cause that was probably, but yeah.
00:06:28
Ryan Coakley
Do a little do little neck dance.
00:06:33
Denis Tyrell
um The way I described the story, because I, they, they told me to go after the the turkey and just try to get And I had no clue. And this was a wild ass Turkey and a jive wild ass Turkey. And he took flight in this little ass chicken coop, busted me in my head with with his feet, like, you threw his shit, cut my face.
00:06:53
Denis Tyrell
it was like the Matrix, though, in my mind. It was all slow. He was like, oh look river So, yeah, I got attacked by a ah wild turkey as well.
00:07:02
Ryan Coakley
That's worse, because cobra chicken, they don't have any real weapons. I mean, you could literally walk up on one and grab it by the neck and kill it. They're just aggressive.
00:07:15
Ryan Coakley
They're territorial, so they're they're bitches. They're mean. A turkey is a wild animal that roosts on the ground, basically, and has talons and a beak that is pointy.
00:07:29
Ryan Coakley
they're They will hurt you.
00:07:31
Denis Tyrell
so can So a cobra chicken is just like a big ass duck?
00:07:34
Ryan Coakley
Yeah, kind of. Yeah, it's like a swan duck thing.
00:07:38
Denis Tyrell
That's majestic, Canadia.
00:07:38
Ryan Coakley
I mean, I'm um um no...
00:07:39
Denis Tyrell
It's majestic.
00:07:41
Ryan Coakley
Yeah, I'm no like... It's no bald eagle.
00:07:45
Ryan Coakley
You know, not just a poke, little jab in there, but...
00:07:45
Denis Tyrell
That's right.
00:07:49
Denis Tyrell
I think, yeah, the, is it, was it last week that, um
00:07:57
Denis Tyrell
I think Dennis is an official American this week.
00:08:01
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, he had his ah his ceremony last week, his induction into the greatest country in the history of the world.
00:08:08
Ryan Coakley
fucking right good for him and i mean that must mean he has no place to speak on canadian slang terms then
00:08:10
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, I told him, ahead.
00:08:19
Denis Tyrell
That's when we were talking about that whole thing. I told him, you know,
Celebrations and Personal Milestones
00:08:23
Ryan Coakley
should i not be swearing you guys not swear okay hi jared the mom
00:08:24
Denis Tyrell
you're not even a real.
00:08:25
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. No, you could square all you want. My mom listens, but whatever. It's all good.
00:08:33
Denis Tyrell
Hi, mama. Yeah. No, so it's it's kind of weird. But well only one time she's ever been like, Jared. I'm like, it's been like 50 episodes before I said that. Like, get out of here. I've been a good boy for a long time.
00:08:45
Denis Tyrell
No, you're good. No worries. but Yeah, but he's an official official American now. um One of us.
00:08:52
Ryan Coakley
One of us. One of us.
00:08:56
Denis Tyrell
And yeah, well, it's May the 4th. May the 4th be with you, my friend.
00:09:00
Ryan Coakley
Thanks, buddy.
00:09:02
Denis Tyrell
Are you the Star Wars yeah kind of guy?
00:09:06
Ryan Coakley
um um i like the not ruined Star Wars.
00:09:12
Denis Tyrell
So i through this show, through interactions with Kyle... Daily, Noah, a handful of other people. And then one time, guess Noah slipped a Hoth reference over my head and one of my buddies kind of let me have it.
00:09:30
Denis Tyrell
And I was like, all right, listen, let's just get this out right. I love Star Wars. I love it. But apparently I like, I love the idea of being a huge fan more than I actually am. Cause I don't know. Like I'm not geeked out all over about it.
00:09:45
Ryan Coakley
And you should be proud of that.
00:09:47
Denis Tyrell
now. But i so I'm excited for May the 4th.
00:09:49
Ryan Coakley
Don't. Don't let them shame you, Jared.
00:09:52
Denis Tyrell
I just, you know, my my enthusiasm to be a Star Wars nerd is through the roof. I just ah just don't have the the knowledge and the hours behind it.
00:10:02
Ryan Coakley
For the community of our buddies who are Star Wars nerds, I enjoy the OG Star Wars and the prequels. I don't care for any of the new stuff.
00:10:15
Ryan Coakley
i I don't have the patience or time to even... ah If I'm going to sit down and like waste time on an Xbox, it's going to be with Elden Ring.
00:10:29
Ryan Coakley
I like Star Wars. And I'll play the games. Because the Star Wars video games are pretty good.
00:10:36
Ryan Coakley
I thought I was a Lord of the Rings nerd. Noah showed me that there's levels to it and I know nothing.
00:10:44
Ryan Coakley
And I'm okay with that.
00:10:44
Denis Tyrell
Same. Yeah. um I'm with you.
00:10:46
Ryan Coakley
I don't want to get any deeper.
00:10:50
Denis Tyrell
Because I shared a ah reel with him one time. ah Some guy that went all off on the deep end of a tangent thing. And I was like, you know, dude, this guy reminded me, he yo, no, this is such and such and such. And he's the, he's the bad-ass. And I'm like, Oh yeah, you're, you're next level, bro.
00:11:05
Ryan Coakley
Yeah. He's the son of...
00:11:05
Denis Tyrell
I'm not worthy.
00:11:06
Ryan Coakley
He's the son of... Boragon and...
00:11:11
Ryan Coakley
Porodnon and he...
00:11:12
Denis Tyrell
And aorta. Yeah.
00:11:13
Ryan Coakley
Yeah. yeah Yeah.
00:11:17
Denis Tyrell
Oh, that's cool. That's cool.
00:11:20
Denis Tyrell
Well, uh, the,
00:11:21
Ryan Coakley
they They make good movies. They could never remake the Lord of the Rings movies now. They could never top
00:11:25
Denis Tyrell
you know what? I think this in honor of my, me celebrating my 18 years of continuous clean time recovery last Friday, uh, which was a really cool day. Um, and thank you for everyone, of the listeners that reached out and said, uh, your well wishes to me on that, uh, Friday, much appreciated, much love.
00:11:50
Denis Tyrell
I appreciate it. And you, um, last week I was talking about that I had an upcoming recovery birthday. Um, and part of that process, Ryan, is that you don't get to say that you have 18 years until you actually have 18 years, right? So the week before, I couldn't actually say that I had 18 years. So people were, you know, I'm saying I'm coming up on 18 years. So I'm here and I have 18 years clean and it's a beautiful thing.
00:12:19
Denis Tyrell
And, uh, but the Lord of the Rings reminds me every now and again, cause I miss every now again, I'll, I'll miss and I want to smoke weed and drink beer and not so much the old, the other stuff. But, um, one of the greatest times I ever had was watching the two towers with a big ass bag of weed and a lot of munchies. just sat on my ass the entire weekend basically and just watched a bunch of Lord of Rings, uh,
00:12:50
Denis Tyrell
And that's what I think about every time I i think about Lord of the Rings is how much I love and miss weed.
00:12:55
Ryan Coakley
i I mean, i have eight minutes clean, so
00:13:01
Denis Tyrell
That's so beautiful. That's so beautiful.
00:13:04
Denis Tyrell
I mean, just...
00:13:04
Ryan Coakley
I thoroughly enjoy weed.
00:13:07
Ryan Coakley
Nothing else. I don't drink alcohol. Well, the eans, caffeine and nicotine, but.
00:13:13
Denis Tyrell
Look what I got. Speaking of.
00:13:14
Ryan Coakley
Oh, tiger tears.
00:13:16
Ryan Coakley
That shit is so good.
00:13:17
Denis Tyrell
I just... I just had my very first Tiger Tears from our good buddy Gabe from Anchorage Forge. He sent me this wonderful sparkling hop water, dry hop with Sparta hops, zero alcohol, zero calories.
00:13:30
Denis Tyrell
um And I heard about this while I was, before I started boycatting boycotting the Hustle and Grind podcast. And he had ah mentioned that he had a non-alcoholic sparkling water. And i was like, all right, I'm raising my hand.
00:13:46
Denis Tyrell
That sounds really cool.
00:13:47
Ryan Coakley
out I was expecting not to like it and I really enjoyed it. It's really good. ah Circling back, though, are you interventioning me on my weed consumption?
00:13:55
Denis Tyrell
No, I'm simply highlighting and acknowledging in a very selfish and um egotistical manner of my recognition of my 18 years, which was six.
00:14:07
Ryan Coakley
It takes a lot of discipline, especially with something like weed.
00:14:11
Ryan Coakley
I don't know what else you were into,
00:14:13
Denis Tyrell
That was it.
00:14:14
Ryan Coakley
Right. I mean, it's hard to get to the point where you need to recognize ah recovery of just weed.
00:14:21
Ryan Coakley
It's like that scene in Half Baked.
00:14:24
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. I've seen him.
00:14:30
Ryan Coakley
You're in here for some marijuana.
00:14:31
Denis Tyrell
Uh, yeah. ah I seen him. That's one of my favorite lines ever.
00:14:37
Ryan Coakley
Yeah. Anyways.
00:14:39
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. But no, no intervention here. No judgment. I don't give two shits what you or anybody else does with their time. This is a personal decision I had to make for myself and my family. And that's where we are.
00:14:50
Denis Tyrell
But, um, There are some times where it's really easy to... to We call it romance and the disease, but like only think about the good times, right? And I can just forget about that. I had this huge bout with despair, and my life was a shit show and you know all that other crap. so But yeah, Lord of the Rings and pizza. and so um Yeah, my wife gave me this...
00:15:10
Ryan Coakley
you're making me squirm with all this emotional talk you'd you plan this you're like ryan hates talking about feelings
00:15:15
Denis Tyrell
A little bit, yeah. Wait till Wait till I ask you about...
00:15:22
Denis Tyrell
When was the last time you felt loved, Ryan? No.
00:15:25
Ryan Coakley
and i'm married it's been a while
00:15:27
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, I know. Well, I see. That's ironic, though, because my wife gave me this beautiful chip of 18 years clean, and I felt loved by her. It was very cool.
00:15:39
Denis Tyrell
that This is the token. This is what you get. Apparently, if you turn these into a bar, they'll give you 18 free drinks. It's a myth. I don't know.
00:15:48
Ryan Coakley
How nice of them.
00:15:50
Denis Tyrell
That's such a fucking, such a troll move.
00:15:55
Ryan Coakley
They're like, welcome back, brother.
00:15:55
Denis Tyrell
But my buddies were like, yeah.
00:15:58
Denis Tyrell
So maybe it's not, maybe it's just the one year because, you know the whole trip is get you in on the first one, but. Oh, yeah. Anyways, back to that stuff. How have you been since we've been departed?
Travel Plans and Geographical Distances
00:16:12
Denis Tyrell
I know you're you're heading to Blade Show, so I'm going to see you here shortly, right?
00:16:18
Ryan Coakley
I'm driving down.
00:16:21
Ryan Coakley
That's a hall.
00:16:22
Denis Tyrell
That is haul from your Connecticut, I mean, or that's past Connecticut.
00:16:23
Ryan Coakley
Yep. Main. I'm in Maine.
00:16:28
Ryan Coakley
Oh, yeah. We're up there.
00:16:28
Denis Tyrell
You're the tip.
00:16:30
Denis Tyrell
You know what else?
00:16:31
Ryan Coakley
I am the tip.
00:16:32
Denis Tyrell
You are the tip. You are the front. ah Speaking of the tip, um our buddy Lawrence Lake from Maritime Knife Supply. you're You're like, how close are you?
00:16:45
Ryan Coakley
I think six or eight hours, something like that.
00:16:47
Denis Tyrell
No fucking way.
00:16:49
Ryan Coakley
I'm three and a half hours from pickle.
00:16:55
Ryan Coakley
Like from his doorstep, you can see the main border.
00:17:00
Denis Tyrell
That blows my mind.
00:17:02
Ryan Coakley
Yeah, I'm way up there. It's an if I drove straight through, it's a 19 and a half hour drive, but.
00:17:07
Denis Tyrell
Now, I'm more tripping out on the fact that Hothian Empire is still six or eight six hours away from you. And that's what, northeast? Nova Scotia?
00:17:21
Ryan Coakley
Because they're kind of like, they're like a little, like, island-ish type thing dangling off the end of Canada.
00:17:21
Denis Tyrell
Well, anyways.
00:17:31
Denis Tyrell
Huh. Well, yes.
00:17:32
Ryan Coakley
Some interesting folks up that way. Yep.
00:17:36
Denis Tyrell
Well, there's one really cool one. And that's just that whole geographical lesson that we went on just only adds to the amazement of how he's able to get us over here in California.
00:17:48
Denis Tyrell
Our package is so quick. But if you're in the market for any of your knife making supplies, go check out Lawrence Lake from Maritime Knife Supply. He's got you covered. He's got Everything you need from abrasives to steel to tools, machinery, yeah all brand new and improved folder lineup put together from him and ah Mr. Know-it-all Tyrell.
00:18:12
Denis Tyrell
um Got you covered. Everything you need. Go check out Lawrence and tell him the boys at Triple T sent you.
00:18:22
Denis Tyrell
I'm about to put in a big-ass order of steel. Like, tonight.
00:18:28
Denis Tyrell
For Tabascus only, though. Because I got a shit ton stainless stock. And unfortunately, I haven't been making anything because my life sucks. But
00:18:39
Denis Tyrell
I'm worried about the old tariffy poo. So I'm going to just stock up on several lengths of feats of some steel. So that's to happen tonight.
00:18:52
Ryan Coakley
I wonder how that works with ah dropshipping. I'll have to ask him because he drops up when I get big orders from him. It's like sheets. So he has he has a dropship.
00:19:00
Denis Tyrell
I think that's, yeah.
00:19:03
Ryan Coakley
So I wonder if that still counts because it never leaves the U.S.
00:19:10
Denis Tyrell
I'm assuming he's got that figured out, but that would be something that I would imagine is going to be probably utilized if it gets out of hand. Because that only makes sense.
00:19:26
Ryan Coakley
Shout out to Lawrence.
00:19:26
Denis Tyrell
But yeah, he'll be there.
00:19:27
Ryan Coakley
We'll see him soon, too.
00:19:31
Denis Tyrell
All right. So you're driving from Maine to Atlanta. How long is that?
00:19:35
Ryan Coakley
ah If I drove straight, it'd be 19 and a half hours. so But me and my brother are driving down. Shout out to Pretty Richie.
00:19:43
Denis Tyrell
So pretty richie.
00:19:45
Ryan Coakley
He's a bougie.
00:19:45
Denis Tyrell
Oh, so you're going to drive three and stop and eat and lift weights and then move on.
00:19:46
Ryan Coakley
He's a bougie motherfucker. So ah he's like the
00:19:55
Ryan Coakley
He ain't lifting no weights. He's got a fucking heringated umbilical cord now.
00:20:00
Ryan Coakley
Yeah, as of like yesterday or the day before. Because he's old and lifts too many weights. So, I hate to be the I told you so brother, but I told him this was going to happen.
00:20:15
Ryan Coakley
Don't oh no him.
00:20:15
Denis Tyrell
Would he stop at...
00:20:17
Ryan Coakley
He desert...
00:20:18
Denis Tyrell
Is the guy that would stop at Planet Fitness along the way?
00:20:22
Ryan Coakley
Or we just get a hotel room with a gym.
00:20:25
Denis Tyrell
Oh, okay. I think that counts as a Planet Fitness.
00:20:30
Ryan Coakley
I love him right to death. I would die for him. ah But we have one of them relationships where we relentlessly make fun of each other.
00:20:38
Denis Tyrell
That seems to be a theme. Most great relationships are rooted in
00:20:43
Denis Tyrell
a lot of shit talking.
00:20:45
Ryan Coakley
Yeah, and he's a champion. hes I mean, he crushes it. He's a tattoo artist.
00:20:51
Denis Tyrell
Oh, and I take it you've been a canvas for him for many times?
00:20:56
Ryan Coakley
I was his training partner, I guess you would say.
00:20:59
Denis Tyrell
Training canvas?
00:21:00
Ryan Coakley
Yeah, because I have no shame. So having shitty tattoo on me because my brother was learning means nothing to me. I'm like, well,
00:21:09
Denis Tyrell
That's really supportive of you. That's a great way to show affection and support for somebody that you care about in a non.
00:21:14
Ryan Coakley
and I'm kind of, and while he picked me because and because I'm kind of numb. So like one thing for up and coming tattoo artists or apprenticing tattoo artists is they need practice clients who are capable of sitting.
00:21:29
Ryan Coakley
So if you can get a tattoo and remain still for four, or five, six hours, you're a great practice canvas over somebody who squirms and is like, ah, ah, ah.
00:21:41
Ryan Coakley
Because they're not in that moment. They're not trying to overcome that. That area sucks, though.
00:21:45
Denis Tyrell
you have? That's what I heard?
00:21:48
Ryan Coakley
Yeah, right? You wouldn't think so, but like right on the wrist is pretty shitty.
00:21:55
Ryan Coakley
Like right above where your watch would sit.
00:21:56
Denis Tyrell
This is right here.
00:21:59
Denis Tyrell
I want something here. And I've heard really lame stuff about that. That's actually a bitch.
00:22:05
Ryan Coakley
Yeah. Some areas are terrible.
00:22:08
Denis Tyrell
That's one of them.
00:22:09
Ryan Coakley
Yeah. Pretty much the, they call it the ditch. So the ditch of any joint. So the back of your knees, when I got the back of my knees tattooed, I had tears coming out of my eyes.
00:22:18
Denis Tyrell
Oh, fuck, Ryan, you're not helping me.
00:22:18
Ryan Coakley
ah I would, I would.
00:22:19
Denis Tyrell
I'm a bitch.
00:22:20
Denis Tyrell
You know that, right? Like, I don't, I, I, every time I get burned right there, i tell everybody, Brent was telling me the other day, he's like, listen, Jared, I'm, I'm tired of hearing about your, your fucking forge burns, dude.
00:22:32
Denis Tyrell
I'm covered in them. Yeah.
00:22:34
Ryan Coakley
I love Brent, dude. Brent's a riot. ah
00:22:39
Ryan Coakley
But yeah, ah so like I have the ditches of my elbows done and the backs of my knees. And the back of the calf is pretty horrible area.
00:22:50
Ryan Coakley
The back of the knees torturous, dude. I'm not I couldn't even lie. ah You know, some areas aren't bad, though. The forearms, the sides of the arms where dudes usually get tattooed. um And ah it's a male or female thing too.
00:23:03
Ryan Coakley
It's more or less sensitive on females in certain areas. Not saying that like per in a pervy way, but like an area on a man that wouldn't bother like his muscular bicep on a female, it's going to hurt more.
00:23:07
Denis Tyrell
So we're just.
00:23:16
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, that's the only thing I have.
00:23:19
Denis Tyrell
That's it. And.
00:23:19
Ryan Coakley
That's about the easiest spot right there.
00:23:21
Denis Tyrell
That's what I imagined.
00:23:23
Denis Tyrell
I got that shit face. It bled like hell.
00:23:26
Ryan Coakley
Uh, the bingo wing flab, like buy your armpit on the back of the arm is the worst spot I think I've ever been tattooed.
00:23:37
Ryan Coakley
Yeah. Um, like going back to the male versus female women handle rib and sternum tattoos a lot better than men do.
00:23:46
Denis Tyrell
well maybe that but yeah Well, maybe because I am a little fuss, then the lack of masculinity will come into effect and it won't hurt me as bad.
00:23:56
Ryan Coakley
No, it's gonna hurt. That's I have a I have a paw print with my dog's heartbeat that passed away a couple years ago on my wrist.
00:24:04
Ryan Coakley
And when Richie was doing it, I was like, bro, why does that hurt so much? He goes, it's just that spot, man. She's just lacing into me. But yeah, it felt like a laser dude. ah Just in that one spot, like right above where your watch would sit.
00:24:21
Denis Tyrell
Well, i like I said, I want like right there. I'm going to put my maker's mark there. So when I go out for the handshake, shameless plug every day.
00:24:33
Denis Tyrell
That's what about. That's what I'm about. But that's the only thing, creatively, um prior to knife making, I'm not an artist. like I can't draw. you know I design fire sprinklers.
Creativity and Craftsmanship
00:24:45
Denis Tyrell
So um that's the one that is probably the only It is definitely the most thing I'm most proud of that I thought up in my own small little brain.
00:24:56
Denis Tyrell
So I think it, yep.
00:24:57
Ryan Coakley
Your makers mark.
00:25:00
Denis Tyrell
The two, the BBs backwards.
00:25:00
Ryan Coakley
Nice. It is hard.
00:25:05
Denis Tyrell
That's, its yeah, that's like, well, I don't know. Somebody just start something and I can, I'm one of those guys that can critique things once I see something, but kind like dreaming it up is very hard.
00:25:16
Ryan Coakley
Yeah, the creationist mind is is different.
00:25:19
Ryan Coakley
If you can create something out of the ether, that's a superpower.
00:25:24
Denis Tyrell
It is a superpower. I totally agree.
00:25:28
Denis Tyrell
ah I'm with you. Speaking of like ethers and superpowers, I have zero, zero. And I mean, i may have nothing to go on of your superpower origin.
00:25:44
Denis Tyrell
Like, how did you start making?
00:25:47
Ryan Coakley
making knives.
00:25:48
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. Or making whatever. ah know you fixed lawnmowers, but so you're a tinkerer.
00:25:53
Ryan Coakley
It's that I've always been a tinkerer. Always.
00:25:57
Ryan Coakley
My some of my earliest memories, when I was a little kid, I was very rambunctious. And to occupy me, my mom would these were, I'm almost 40. So this is back in the rotary phone days, like 1988, 89. So my mom eighty nine so my mom would
00:26:15
Ryan Coakley
get a rotary phone junk out of the trash and give it to me with little stubby Phillips head screwdriver. And I would take it apart all the way down to the, the bits and pieces.
00:26:24
Denis Tyrell
yeah That's like the, that's the late, that's the late eighties version of an iPad.
00:26:31
Ryan Coakley
Yeah. She'd give me a paper bag, the phone and a screwdriver, and I would take it apart to every little bitty piece. At that point time, I couldn't put it back together, but it's just always something that's,
00:26:44
Denis Tyrell
I was going to you're gonna steal my joke. Cause I always tell you like, I'm a genius when it comes to taking shit apart. I just can't, I can never put it back together.
00:26:50
Ryan Coakley
No, that kind that came later. But yeah, it's just something... My brain's always worked that way. i can I can take a motor apart down to the crankshaft, leave it for five months, and put it back together.
00:27:04
Ryan Coakley
And it's just no big
00:27:05
Denis Tyrell
No roadmap, just that's.
00:27:07
Ryan Coakley
No pictures, no nothing.
00:27:09
Ryan Coakley
I never take pictures when I take stuff apart. I used to.
00:27:13
Ryan Coakley
It's just a learned skill, ah just like anything. um And some people are just predisposed to being able to do certain things. i can always I've always been able to fix it. And that there's some sort of like satisfaction i used to get.
00:27:28
Ryan Coakley
Now that I've done it professionally for eight years, it's lost its luster.
00:27:34
Ryan Coakley
Sometimes I still take stuff apart, though, for science. Like, I don't know how that works. I'm going to take that apart so I can see how it works. I don't need to put it back together. It's going in the trash, but it happens all the time.
00:27:48
Denis Tyrell
um it wass good Wow. I just got a notification from my computer that blew my ears off. Apparently my volume and my headset's really high. That scared the shit out of me.
00:27:57
Ryan Coakley
Oh, I didn't, I didn't hear it.
00:27:59
Denis Tyrell
yeah No, I was just all so straight in my head. Scared the shit out me.
00:28:03
Denis Tyrell
Sorry about that. All right, so...
00:28:04
Ryan Coakley
Growing up my formative years.
00:28:07
Ryan Coakley
my bedroom looked like a TV repair shop and I was blowing the breaker in my bedroom all the time to the point where like i figured out how to reset it.
00:28:15
Ryan Coakley
So I just stopped telling my mom I blew the breaker and I just go down and reset it, come back up.
00:28:21
Denis Tyrell
Jeez. So all that tinkering led you to one day, how'd you start? How'd you get into this?
00:28:28
Ryan Coakley
ah I always liked knives, loved them as a kid. And then when I was, geez, probably eight, There was a little accident and my mom took knives away and I wasn't allowed to have them again until I was an adult.
00:28:48
Ryan Coakley
yeah I don't know. I just, one day I was at work working on a rototiller and I was like, these tines would make a really cool looking knife.
00:28:58
Ryan Coakley
And I like roughly ground one to bevels like sharper than they come from. Normally. Had no idea about heat trading or any of that shit. And that's still around here somewhere. And then ah made another one out a lawnmower blade and a pallet.
00:29:16
Ryan Coakley
And then I saw Marekko on Joe Rogan. And I was like, whoa, you could actually, like, be cool and do this. 2018? Mm-hmm.
00:29:24
Denis Tyrell
How long ago was that?
00:29:29
Denis Tyrell
Okay. So you started before whole COVID bus?
00:29:33
Ryan Coakley
Yeah, I'm not a COVID baby.
00:29:36
Ryan Coakley
Yeah. But so I made a few knives that first year. And then I realized quite quickly, once you start getting obsessed with this, that I needed legitimate equipment. So then I spent like two years building my first grinder and my first kiln.
00:29:52
Ryan Coakley
So there was like two, yeah, there was like two years in there where I didn't make a knife because I was just building tooling.
00:29:52
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, that's right. You did.
00:29:59
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. I can relate to that. I built, cause I, I, say I, but my buddy Jeff and I, um, built a shit ton of our tools, um, grinder, um, just endless stuff. And it, it, it was hard cause we got both have full time jobs, you know, so getting together, you know, six hours a week to kind of do things. I was forced to grab some,
00:30:26
Denis Tyrell
shitty, well not shitty, but you know, just with some beginner style grinders and stuff. Cause like you're saying, this shit is like, it consumes you. Once you get, when you get that bug, it just, it gets you.
00:30:38
Denis Tyrell
Um, and then you're off and running, but, uh, all right. Two years of making tools and then you just enter like, uh, and you're, you ever get with anybody?
00:30:52
Denis Tyrell
Cause you're kind of, you're like a, a loner person by nature, right?
00:30:55
Ryan Coakley
What do you mean? Like meet up with another maker?
00:30:58
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. Like, did you have any kind of teaching or just all like YouTube and trial and error self stuff?
00:31:05
Ryan Coakley
I've never worked in somebody else's shop, and nobody's ever worked in my shop. Only one maker has ever stepped foot in my shop, and that's Mark Bishop of am Bishop Knives, because when I got my even heat, I gave him my old kiln, because he didn't have one.
00:31:20
Denis Tyrell
Oh, so he just, he just picked it up.
00:31:22
Ryan Coakley
Yeah, because he's like 20 minutes away.
00:31:26
Ryan Coakley
Because it's not something you can sell.
00:31:28
Ryan Coakley
ah homemade kiln, you can't like sell it.
00:31:30
Ryan Coakley
And it was just taking up space. And the thing sucks the power, dude. That thing has no power regulation on it whatsoever. It 100% full power all the time.
00:31:45
Denis Tyrell
Interesting.
00:31:45
Ryan Coakley
So, I was like, I'll find another maker. And I'll be like, don't electrocute yourself. Have a kiln.
00:31:51
Denis Tyrell
And then I am almost the complete opposite.
00:31:53
Denis Tyrell
Like I, I, you know, you have to, right. But I 100% prefer to be with somebody to hang out, to go. Like I have traveled all over the the country basically now at this point, checking out other people's shops and hanging out and getting with as many people as I can. Cause that's just, that's my speed. But ironically, you know, I'm not a big fan of,
00:32:20
Denis Tyrell
It took, it put me and a place where I had to step out of my comfort zone of not reaching out and trying to, you know, do that. But it has been, it was, it has been, and I highly suggest if you're able to, it has been the the best part of the experiences, all the people and getting all that stuff.
00:32:42
Denis Tyrell
And then obviously hooking up with Dennis wasn't a bad deal, right?
00:32:48
Ryan Coakley
um I'm getting to the point now where I want to because, you know, like, what's the term? Autodidact is, I guess, the best way to describe me. Self-taught. Somebody who can only learn by teaching themselves.
00:33:02
Ryan Coakley
So, like, watching somebody do something or listening to an explanation, it's just one ear out the other. I can't comprehend it. But if I see you do it, I can develop my own rationale on why you're doing it.
00:33:15
Ryan Coakley
You know what I mean? And I'm getting to the point now where you can only teach yourself so much and then you need to get out there because everybody has these weird little nuances in what they do. And they might not like that. I don't even think most people recognize that they do it, but somebody watching you do it is going to pick up on it.
00:33:35
Ryan Coakley
Like how you hold your blade or where you apply pressure when you're trying to do a certain thing or, you know what I'm saying?
00:33:44
Ryan Coakley
watching Jason Knight grind at Blade Show two years ago in the Ameribraid booth. like I got right up on him and I'm like, oh, because he does this like little flick thing with the tip when he takes it off the belt.
00:33:57
Ryan Coakley
was like, what? What is that about? Why are you doing that? And then you start thinking about it. Then you start trying it. And I think everybody, including myself, is getting, I'm getting to that point now where I need to be more social.
00:34:12
Ryan Coakley
I like my own little I'm in my my man cave,
Work Ethic and Personal Drive
00:34:16
Ryan Coakley
dude. I got a two-car garage full all my favorite shit.
00:34:19
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. i mean, there's no wrong with, I mean, theyre i that's the, that's the cool thing about making is that there's no wrong way to do it, whether you're with other people or whether you're by yourself. mean, ultimately we, you can't make things with somebody all the time. Right. So there's a huge amount of, of that, that we get. Right.
00:34:37
Denis Tyrell
But, um, I'll quickly get myself in a, in an unmotivated zone, you know, and that's one of the things that I think I wanted to bring up about you is that
00:34:48
Denis Tyrell
um by by proxy by you know just instagram from the podcast and stuff is that um in one of the more um admirable traits that i've witnessed from those things from you is how much you actually fucking hustle and get after it like you you get shit done And I am very envious and oftentimes consider myself, you know, not as motivated because, you know, you got to, you got to, you have a regular job.
00:35:22
Denis Tyrell
Um, but the, the crazy amount of batch work that you put in and, you know, and I think it's a shame because, you know, when you talk about having to put out 50 plus knives in this small block at the block of time, and you don't really get to share that with the community, right?
00:35:41
Denis Tyrell
That's, that's almost, that's like a shame, a crime to me.
00:35:45
Ryan Coakley
I appreciate the compliment but that's how I get those orders because a lot of makers aren't willing to not they you I don't say this as an insult this is just a reality their ego gets in the way
00:35:57
Denis Tyrell
hundred percent.
00:35:58
Ryan Coakley
And i think Brian House has described Brian House has described it as a scarcity complex, which is my hustle, as you say, because I just can't stop.
00:35:59
Denis Tyrell
Guilty, I should say.
00:36:09
Ryan Coakley
I cannot um like. Yeah. Last twenty dollars, Ryan is a asshole. ah ah You know what I mean?
00:36:17
Ryan Coakley
Because ah I grew up very poor.
00:36:19
Ryan Coakley
So as an adult who has people who depend on him, I just I I am laser focused and.
00:36:27
Ryan Coakley
To the point where if I take any downtime, I feel like a piece of shit. Like, to a detriment. It's a problem.
00:36:34
Ryan Coakley
I sleep five hours a night.
00:36:37
Denis Tyrell
So do I, but for, for many other, for many other reasons, but.
00:36:40
Ryan Coakley
Yeah. And I'm mad at myself. I can't do four. It's just...
00:36:44
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, I'm actually in this weird spot where i'm I guess it's my age. and um'm I'm 45 now. I'll be 46 here in a while. But I'm actually starting to feel the the effects of my sleep schedule.
00:37:00
Denis Tyrell
I don't feel 100%. ah hundred percent
00:37:05
Denis Tyrell
But I can't get like more. like By me, increasing my thing is like by one or two hours. Because like I'll have an incident like last week where I went to bed 8 o'clock. And I woke up at two and I was done.
00:37:17
Denis Tyrell
That was it. was like, okay, now what? What the fuck? I was trying to catch up.
00:37:20
Ryan Coakley
now I'm going to be up.
00:37:21
Denis Tyrell
I was asleep. Yeah.
00:37:22
Ryan Coakley
Yeah. I'm a late night guy. And it really messes with me because my job is, you know, I got to be there at eight. So I got to be up at six.
00:37:35
Ryan Coakley
So like my sleep schedule swaps 180 degrees every week because Friday when I'm out of work, I get out at four and I come home.
00:37:49
Ryan Coakley
I say hi, I eat dinner and then I go in the shop and I'm out here till 430.
00:37:54
Denis Tyrell
and the morning?
00:37:55
Ryan Coakley
Yeah, because that's when I'm most productive is like, I don't know if it's leftovers because I worked in kitchen so long and I liked closing.
00:38:03
Ryan Coakley
I like the night shifts, but I'm most productive from like 9 p.m.
00:38:08
Ryan Coakley
to like 3 a.m. And then that last hour and a half is just me winding down. Sometimes I'll go inside and play Elbin Ring to kind of like tire myself down.
00:38:17
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, i'll I have a little bit of that myself. like
00:38:20
Denis Tyrell
I have that mindless zone of stimulating, but it's it's kind of calming and puts you down too.
00:38:28
Ryan Coakley
Yeah, there's no windows in my shop either, and that doesn't help. So if I come out here at like three in the afternoon, before I know it, it's dark out and I had no idea. I go outside and it's like two in the morning.
00:38:39
Ryan Coakley
I'm like, oh, shit, what time? It happens.
00:38:43
Ryan Coakley
My wife's very patient.
00:38:45
Denis Tyrell
That's cool. Yeah, mine is too.
00:38:47
Ryan Coakley
And I'm 12 feet away. I mean, my it's a detached garage.
00:38:53
Ryan Coakley
it's literally 16 feet from my kitchen window to the door of my shop. So she, if she wants to see me, she can just walk out here.
00:39:03
Denis Tyrell
I'm attached.
00:39:03
Denis Tyrell
I'm in a two-car garage as well, but it is attached.
00:39:06
Ryan Coakley
Oh, attached. Oh, that would suck. That would suck. I'm blasting like stupid, like, be like lame ass. 39 year old Ryan music out here at like three o'clock in the morning to crank and music.
00:39:18
Denis Tyrell
Nice. Nice. Nice.
00:39:20
Ryan Coakley
It's like that meme where it's like,
00:39:21
Denis Tyrell
No neighbors or anything?
00:39:22
Ryan Coakley
My neighbors are far enough away.
00:39:25
Ryan Coakley
pro My closest neighbor is probably 200 yards away.
00:39:29
Ryan Coakley
And they're old people. They go to bed at like 7.
00:39:32
Ryan Coakley
Yeah, we're the youngest people in our neighborhood.
00:39:36
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, that's a foreign concept, having space between neighbors here for me.
00:39:40
Ryan Coakley
Yeah. I have a moat around my property, but...
Property Maintenance and Personal Anecdotes
00:39:45
Ryan Coakley
My mom actually...
00:39:48
Ryan Coakley
Yeah, I have a four to five foot deep ditch all around my whole property and a tree line on the other on the other side.
00:39:57
Ryan Coakley
My mom actually, when I bought this house, my mom came over to see it and she was like, go figure you would buy a house with a moat around it.
00:39:58
Denis Tyrell
Somebody add. Go ahead
00:40:06
Ryan Coakley
i was like, it wasn't.
00:40:07
Denis Tyrell
Did you put anything dangerous in there?
00:40:09
Ryan Coakley
No, it's just you wouldn't you couldn't cross it. I mean. It's a, it's, this is like old farmland behind us. So when it rains, all the water drains off that farmland and the moat or the ditch diverts the water around the property.
00:40:25
Ryan Coakley
And, uh, yeah, it's pretty gnarly down in there.
00:40:31
Ryan Coakley
I have to climb in there once a year towards the fall and weed whack all the weeds down.
00:40:39
Denis Tyrell
Somebody asked me the other day, because I don't i don't intend on California being my end game, but I don't...
00:40:46
Ryan Coakley
That's good.
00:40:48
Denis Tyrell
ah They were like, well, where would you want to go? And I go, well, that's a good fucking question because I want to live in California that's not in California. and this is the only place where I have all the things that I'm accustomed to, you know, my entire life.
00:41:01
Denis Tyrell
You know perfect weather, no snow. It's hot as where I'm at anyways. It's hot as fuck for three months a year. But then the rest of it's just like perfect.
00:41:13
Denis Tyrell
And I just don't know. like Florida was on my list for a long time until I went over there and hung out with Brent. I'm like, fuck that. There's not a, it seems like I'm going to have to be one of those old people where I live in, i have two residences, right? It's been the winter one place in the summer somewhere else. Cause I don't know. I just can't equalize cold. Cause I know you, you get, you guys get cold, right?
00:41:36
Ryan Coakley
Yeah, we're still, it's 54 today.
00:41:41
Ryan Coakley
I mean, we're in this weird limbo time of year where we call it the mud season because everything's thawed, it's raining, but it's still like not warm enough to really like be cool with spending a lot of time outside.
00:41:55
Ryan Coakley
like I mowed my lawn two days ago and had the wood stove going today. So it's like, we're in this weird limbo. Our winters aren't what they used to be. I mean, when I was a kid, even up into adulthood, we would get singular storms where we get three feet.
00:42:17
Denis Tyrell
Do you do any forging?
00:42:19
Denis Tyrell
I know this answer. Yeah.
00:42:21
Ryan Coakley
I forged four round bars into flat-ended round bars and then made a knife stand out of them.
00:42:31
Ryan Coakley
How proud are you?
00:42:32
Denis Tyrell
With a forge or?
00:42:33
Ryan Coakley
No, with my kiln.
00:42:35
Denis Tyrell
With your... I going to say, yeah, because I don't think you got a forge.
00:42:36
Ryan Coakley
Yeah. I have a forage.
00:42:39
Ryan Coakley
I've never lit it.
00:42:41
Ryan Coakley
I put it, I put it, it's Mr. Volcano. I put it together. I've never lit it. I've had it like six years.
00:42:47
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. Well, forging is like the new, it's not the new thing, but I'm ah ah like the way I've explained it is that stock removal was the, the gateway in for me. um Once I saw,
00:42:59
Denis Tyrell
can't remember who it was. YouTube. Redbeard Ops. He had a video on how to make a knife with cheap things. um
00:43:07
Denis Tyrell
And like he, I describe it as like he demystified this process for me. Like and it made it like seem like I could do it. So ah stock removal came pretty easy for me.
00:43:18
Denis Tyrell
never really struggled with the process, ah you know, um the overall process. I mean, getting good at is another another thing. Right. But forging. has been an entirely different situation for me and something that I've really locked in on and have made something that I'm going to, to conquer. But, um, you know, if you're going to forge, you got to have a forge and then you got to have a hammer.
00:43:39
Denis Tyrell
So, Uh, if you're in the market for a new hammer, uh, go check out Frank and Nita over at two bastard Smithy and supply. ah they have the most incredible fat peen. They got all the peens you want, you know, a straight peen, ah cross peen. I'm trying to talk them into doing a curvy peen, uh, all the peens that you need because, that fat bastard, that's not a fat bastard.
00:44:05
Denis Tyrell
Ha ha ha ha. The two bastards fat peen will, will take out any fat bastard. But ah yeah, if you're in the market for a new hammer, go check out a Frank Anita ever at two bastards Smithian supply and get your mitts on a fat peen. Cause
00:44:22
Ryan Coakley
Yeah, get that fat peen in your hand.
00:44:25
Denis Tyrell
any grand to have a fat peen in your hand.
00:44:25
Ryan Coakley
Yeah, i just a touch on that. I fucking love Frank and Nita. They are salt of the earth people. The second I met them at Blade last year, i was like, I love you two.
00:44:38
Ryan Coakley
You guys are awesome. You're my people.
00:44:42
Ryan Coakley
They're they're the best.
00:44:44
Ryan Coakley
So go get a fat peen in your hand.
00:44:46
Denis Tyrell
Go get that fat pain. Yeah. I got a chance when I went to, I went to Texas blade show ah last year or in March, not last year. Um, I got to hang out with him for a minute there, but just, just awesome dude. And and need his bad ass as well. So yeah, go do that.
00:45:02
Ryan Coakley
I believe somebody got a picture.
00:45:04
Ryan Coakley
i was taking a picture with them and I wasn't doing it, but somebody got the perfect shot of me looking down at Nita's boobs in the picture.
00:45:16
Ryan Coakley
That wasn't what I was doing. I must've just been adjusting or something like that. Totally respectful. And somebody just happened to snap it at the exact moment where it looked that way and appeared that way.
00:45:25
Denis Tyrell
Oh, that's great. That's great.
00:45:27
Ryan Coakley
And you saying that reminded me of that, but.
00:45:27
Denis Tyrell
That's awesome. Yeah. You know, I was going to tell, because I was telling Dennis, I'm like, yeah when you're going to be on here, I said, you know, know my my hope for this episode is is that ah Ryan gets to say all the things that Noah's going to cut him off for.
00:45:40
Denis Tyrell
I'm not going to do that. So you want to talk about looking at, you know, ah sponsors, arbitrary, yeah, at ah on an accident type thing, getting caught and roasted, I think that's awesome.
00:45:44
Ryan Coakley
I wasn't looking at. um
00:45:51
Ryan Coakley
I can't even remember who snapped the photo, but they were teasing me about it. And I was like, no, that wasn't what was going on.
00:45:56
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, no, no, not no shot there, but yeah, that that's a cool story.
00:45:59
Ryan Coakley
They're awesome. And Frank was the most dapper man I've ever seen.
00:46:05
Denis Tyrell
he's He's a beast.
00:46:07
Ryan Coakley
He's got some style, bro. I look homeless.
00:46:10
Ryan Coakley
ah Toby from Fire and Steel was teasing me at Blake's I had epoxy on my shirt. And he's like, you look like a schlub. And I was like, I am a schlub.
00:46:18
Ryan Coakley
why would I don't I mean, I ain't trying to impress you. I'm not selling any of you guys knives.
00:46:23
Denis Tyrell
That's right.
00:46:25
Denis Tyrell
That's great. Yeah.
00:46:26
Ryan Coakley
So your new let me ask you something.
00:46:29
Ryan Coakley
I'm throw a wrench in your gears. Your new endeavor into forging.
00:46:34
Ryan Coakley
Where did did this come out of peer pressure or just natural evolution?
00:46:39
Denis Tyrell
No, just strictly something that I i wanted to do. um Yeah, no, there was zero zero pressure. I'm...
00:46:51
Denis Tyrell
put it like, I guess bluntly is like, I give two fucks about the whole blade Smith or Smith knife maker. You know, I don't, I don't play that game. It's not anything I'm interested in.
00:47:03
Denis Tyrell
um I think that, uh, developing skills, um, set in our trade, um, is something that I'm interested, interested in pursuing. Uh, and I don't see anything wrong with it.
00:47:17
Denis Tyrell
The most The biggest part about forging is that it, I'm struggling to to learn it. It's not come easy for me. ah The concept of, yeah, the concept of moving metal, like it just, it doesn't make sense to me that I got to hit it here to make it do this.
00:47:26
Ryan Coakley
It's an entirely, yeah, it's a whole other skill set.
00:47:36
Denis Tyrell
And I, I struggle with that a lot in the very beginning. um But people that do it, they make it look easy and there's some really awesome stuff out there.
00:47:47
Denis Tyrell
Um, I always liked Damascus. That was, you know, for me, that was one of the things that's why hooking up with, uh, Dennis was really, uh, I'm trying to think of a fucking big word here, but I'm not, I'm coming up empty because whatever. But, um, that was something that was really interesting to me.
00:48:05
Denis Tyrell
So having that access, uh, to one of, you know, the better Damascus makers, uh, in our community, um, you know, damn near next door was really cool. Um, and then, you know, when you have the opportunity to,
00:48:22
Denis Tyrell
use um our buddy uh koi and the boys over at baker forged and tool because if you're not interested in making your own damascus we have ah wonderful community and some awesome people but if you're looking for the best um pattern welded steel uh in the business and you don't want to do it yourself go check out koi at a bigger forged and tool.
00:48:43
Denis Tyrell
Uh, they got some awesome stuff, um, including the, um, all new line of Gator piss, Gator piss, uh, the regular, ah formula, uh, they got the brand new heavy, um, and the new stainless, uh, Gator piss max.
00:49:01
Denis Tyrell
Um, I think the pre-orders are still going not a hundred percent on that.
00:49:08
Ryan Coakley
I don't know.
00:49:08
Ryan Coakley
I'm a bad sponsor also.
00:49:09
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, I think, yeah, that, go try it. Yeah, because i remember when Gator Piss came out, I called Coyne, I was like, apparently I missed the pre-order, and because he's an awesome dude, he's like, well, just give me your info and we'll we'll take care of you. So I was able to get get a batch of that, but...
00:49:28
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, they also have a, ah not a website, um the app where you can get ah the discount, now the you can get ah early access to the drops.
00:49:38
Denis Tyrell
This week we got Twist Damascus. This batch is made with 1084 and 15 and 20, sports of one of a one-of-a-kind braided rope look from our special layering process, surface ground and clean.
00:49:50
Denis Tyrell
And it's some of the finest twists we've produced. So um that's the drop. Unfortunately, by the time these things air, I think you guys have the same since we are on the same day. ah the stuff goes quick. So um get ahead of that. But when you use the app, you can get a day early access to the drops that are coming up.
00:50:10
Denis Tyrell
And you can get that stuff in from Maritime Knife Supply if you're in the Hoth region. of Northern America.
00:50:19
Denis Tyrell
see what I'm saying? Northern America. Yeah.
00:50:21
Ryan Coakley
I mean, it it is the North American continent.
00:50:24
Denis Tyrell
That's right. So anyways, yeah.
00:50:27
Denis Tyrell
Koi and the boys. Um, I just did a real, uh, I had to get some Koi brought us some of the heavy when he was here. And, uh, I told Dennis I needed some. So I went and put this little container and we poured it in and,
00:50:44
Denis Tyrell
taped the top and I was like, Hmm. So I strapped it up in the seatbelt, wrapped it up and it transfer transferred, transferred over here with some precious cargo and like a, like a baby in and a car seat.
00:50:56
Ryan Coakley
are Are you curious why I don't forge?
00:51:00
Denis Tyrell
uh, yeah, I am.
00:51:05
Denis Tyrell
Why don't you forge?
00:51:07
Ryan Coakley
ah i was ah How do I articulate this? I've been asked this before, and sometimes I give a sarcastic answer, like I don't fucking want to or whatever. i don't I find that a lot of guys that forge, they hold a certain level of sentiment to it.
00:51:24
Ryan Coakley
because it's something that is, it's an antiquated method, right? I mean, in reality, you're doing something that our ancestors did out of necessity for fun. My mind, I'm more like, I'm not opposed to it for any reason other than like time to learn a new skillset versus time I have to make my existing amount of orders.
00:51:53
Ryan Coakley
um but it does appeal to me in the markability aspect because it gives you another avenue to market yourself and your knives. And so if you're like me and you're doing a lot of batch work or OEM orders where your name isn't on it, forging would be an ideal way to market yourself to other clientele.
00:52:18
Ryan Coakley
I'm in this weird catch-22 where I'm too damn busy now doing batch work or any of my other life projects because I've got, you know, my house, my day job, all that shit to dedicate enough time to be proficient at it.
00:52:34
Ryan Coakley
And I just, I'm not ready to suck for that long. If that makes sense.
00:52:42
Denis Tyrell
I think when you work yourself into that spot where, yeah so I'm taking it ah that you're, you're now in a place with your making that is your, don't want to say reliant, but it is a source of income for you.
Balancing Knife-Making and Other Jobs
00:52:57
Ryan Coakley
I make more from knives than I do my day job.
00:53:00
Ryan Coakley
And it piss it pisses it pisses my boss off. But I'm at a weird limbo where I don't make enough from either to support myself. So I have to do both.
00:53:12
Denis Tyrell
Right. I think that's, I don't want to that's the the case for most people because that's definitely not. But I think for myself, um I, don't, let me just rephrase that.
00:53:29
Denis Tyrell
I respect people that have and capitalize on the opportunity to generate more income for themselves. However that is. Right. So,
00:53:37
Ryan Coakley
is It's worth mentioning though, Jared, so your listeners who don't know me know I'm a whore for money and I could have $17 billion trillion dollars and never be satisfied.
00:53:48
Ryan Coakley
So it's it's just like, yeah, it's it's a weird limbo that I'm in.
00:53:56
Ryan Coakley
I definitely want to learn because i I do make Damascus knives and it is nice to be able to say and it does increase the value of your product to be able to say, I made this Damascus.
00:54:07
Ryan Coakley
Because I have noticed as a stock removal guy when I'm like, Micah Dunn made this billet or Baker Forging Tool made the steel.
00:54:15
Ryan Coakley
They're like, what does that mean? Because the majority of your clientele has no fucking idea how to make knives.
00:54:22
Ryan Coakley
So it's it puts you in a weird spot. um
00:54:27
Ryan Coakley
I'm not a like rush into anything kind of guy. Like I'm slow. I have a forge. I'm slowly building a press. I've got all the steel. I've got the hydraulics now.
00:54:38
Denis Tyrell
I'm doing the same.
00:54:38
Ryan Coakley
You know, it's just piece it together. What's that Johnny Cash song?
00:54:45
Ryan Coakley
One piece at a time.
00:54:48
Denis Tyrell
I don't know that one.
00:54:48
Ryan Coakley
And no, he talks about.
00:54:50
Denis Tyrell
I know a lot of Johnny Cash, but
00:54:53
Ryan Coakley
ah He talks about ah he works at a car factory and he steals one piece of the car. Every day until he until he gets a whole car.
00:55:03
Denis Tyrell
There you go. All right.
00:55:04
Ryan Coakley
Yeah. ah Yeah, I don't know. I I that's why I asked you about peer pressure, because I've gotten a lot of peer pressure from the boys. um And you know, the boys, the crew, they're like, Ryan, you should forge.
00:55:16
Denis Tyrell
I do. Yeah. Yeah.
00:55:19
Ryan Coakley
It's awesome. And I'm like, I'm sure it is, bro.
00:55:21
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, I think, and yeah yeah, I know.
00:55:24
Denis Tyrell
I want to say it's not peer-reported because it's ball-busting in its truest form amongst your amongst your people.
00:55:28
Denis Tyrell
But um I like to think of it as ah way of trying to share, you know, something that they enjoy and try to get you to participate along with them.
00:55:39
Denis Tyrell
So I think it's less in that group anyways.
00:55:40
Ryan Coakley
The sentiment.
00:55:42
Ryan Coakley
Yeah. And I'm not sentimental.
00:55:45
Ryan Coakley
So I don't feel that. I don't feel that sentiment. Does something like, I don't know if I have a tumor, something in my brain, that spot is shut off. I don't feel sentimental about almost anything.
00:55:58
Ryan Coakley
And so when people feel that sentiment about forging, I don't feel that. It just doesn't exist in my world. it It has to have a rationale behind it. And it I'm just slow rolling, just doing my thing. Eventually, someday, it's going to happen.
00:56:15
Ryan Coakley
But I made... to put the time constraint into perspective for you, I made 323 knives last year by, by myself while working four days a week at a job.
00:56:28
Ryan Coakley
I couldn't, I, once I, when I added them all up at the end of the year, I was like, holy shit, I did.
00:56:28
Denis Tyrell
ah That's insane.
00:56:34
Ryan Coakley
I did that many. Oh my God. How did that happen? i'm Like, you know, it's almost a knife a day.
00:56:42
Ryan Coakley
And, That's why i I don't know if your clients ever ask you this, but the most common question I get asked is how long does it take you to make a knife?
00:56:50
Denis Tyrell
Somebody just asked me that yesterday.
00:56:51
Ryan Coakley
Yeah. And I'm like, I couldn't even put it into words for you. It just doesn't work that way. It's not, you know, it just doesn't work that way.
00:57:02
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, I think that's hard too because, you know, and the running joke with me is that i I've...
00:57:08
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, when you say you made 300-some knives last year, that blows my my mind because, yeah.
00:57:12
Ryan Coakley
Completed. That's not like ones I fucked up or I've got a whole bin of Jareded out blanks.
00:57:20
Ryan Coakley
So it's, you know, it is what it is. That's not a brag. I hate, that's why I don't, we don't talk about this stuff on the hustle and grind. It's all about the guests.
00:57:28
Ryan Coakley
And I just, yeah, it was,
00:57:31
Denis Tyrell
No, I think that's great because that's what I was most interested in is trying to get a little bit more insight on some things about you. um Because we're not a interview show either. It's just Dennis and I doing our thing.
00:57:44
Denis Tyrell
um But you know there I think, like again, it part part of this deal is we're all interesting people. um And I've met, I mean, the the ratio of you know douchebags to fucking awesome people is like completely lopsided. There's only like I can count on, i don't even think I can fill a hand up with how many people that I could never talk to again and wouldn't, wouldn't give a shit about.
00:58:06
Denis Tyrell
Um, because generally like there's a lot of cool people and there's so much to learn and so much to, you know, to, to share amongst each other in the community. And that's one of the the awesome things about it. But, um, yeah, like that's what I was asking. Like, you know, how long have you been making? So started in 18 and you're just purely stock removal. and now it's a, it's a, it's a,
00:58:28
Denis Tyrell
a source of income and you're reliant upon, you know, of income. What is your favorite thing to make? Like what gets you going? So everything stops tomorrow. Everything's complete.
00:58:39
Denis Tyrell
You don't have an order and you get to do whatever you want. what What are to make?
00:58:48
Ryan Coakley
I don't know. I've got...
00:58:50
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. I would say the same thing just so you know. Yeah.
00:58:54
Ryan Coakley
There's things I want to make on my list. Like, I've got two gladius blanks ready to grind and another like little short sword that I already have partially rough ground.
00:59:07
Ryan Coakley
Because swords are awesome and I don't have a legit one and I've always wanted to make them. Even if I don't like want that to be a part of my market, because that's that is a hard hustle to sell handmade swords because you're getting up into the buco bucks.
00:59:26
Ryan Coakley
You know, with all the work that goes into them, but just being able to say I made this sword is pretty cool.
00:59:27
Denis Tyrell
yeah remember that
00:59:33
Ryan Coakley
So I don't know maybe a sword every time I have free time, like I made a big ass Magna Cup machete the other day. Because I had a little bit of free time and I had it are i had it all cut out and heat treated. So i was like, I'll just grind this out, slap some handles on it.
00:59:48
Ryan Coakley
I made a big fuck off Bowie knife last year at a quarter inch thick ADC RV2.
00:59:53
Denis Tyrell
yeah remember that one
00:59:54
Ryan Coakley
Because I had a little pause in in between orders. I was like, I'll just make some. Because, you know, doing batch work, you're making 50, 70, 25, 10, whatever it is,
01:00:07
Ryan Coakley
identical knive back to back to back to back to back. So whenever, usually when I have a lull, I make something weird that I've never done before.
Knife-Making Passion and Inspirations
01:00:20
Denis Tyrell
So like you, have you predominantly done like culinary or EDC or like, what's, what's your, your main jam?
01:00:28
Ryan Coakley
I do, and I'll do anything anybody pays me to make.
01:00:32
Ryan Coakley
or Horfer money here.
01:00:35
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. in Any preferences? I'm saying money is aside, same.
01:00:37
Ryan Coakley
I love culinary knives. Yeah.
01:00:41
Denis Tyrell
i That is probably the most surprising thing about where I've ended up is how much i And that's just the other part of the forging that was really, really attractive because... you know and We can all... It's going to transition right into my next question, but um seeing somebody forge...
01:01:01
Denis Tyrell
a culinary knife. Like I had the opportunity to watch Marekko take one of his little micro billets out at maker's camp and whip that thing up and finish that knife a hundred percent. Uh, the first year I was there, um, which I still think is a shame because this was like two, two plus years ago.
01:01:19
Denis Tyrell
Um, if I, it would have been so much more beneficial for me to, to watch that today. And 90% of that shit went right over my head. Like I had no idea like the awesomeness that I was witnessing, but that's really where, what really gets me going is, is culinary.
01:01:39
Denis Tyrell
And I had zero interest in, I'm not, I'm not a cook. I don't like, i don't like to cook. Uh, So, um but I think some a really well done forged or even stocking, it doesn't really matter.
01:01:51
Denis Tyrell
Culinary knife is freaking badass to me, but swords and all that other crap shit is now becoming like cool to me as well. Cause I wasn't, I wasn't a knife guy at all.
01:02:01
Ryan Coakley
that That's a reigniting your inner 12 year old. This is what I feel like on swords.
01:02:06
Ryan Coakley
Cause it's just like, you know, it's awesome.
01:02:11
Ryan Coakley
Yeah. well I've never, you know, that like, Ooh, feeling when you see a really nice, like when you see Gabe Fletcher's work from Anchorage, that Ooh, that's nice.
01:02:19
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. Yep. Yep.
01:02:23
Ryan Coakley
I've never felt that looking at an EDC hunter whatever. It's always culinary knives. Always.
01:02:29
Denis Tyrell
Yep. Yeah, that's a that's a good point.
01:02:29
Ryan Coakley
I don't know if it,
01:02:31
Denis Tyrell
I don't know if I've been...
01:02:35
Ryan Coakley
Like, I've acknowledged niceness, but I've never been gotten that visceral, like, ooh, ooh, baby.
01:02:35
Denis Tyrell
i've been...
01:02:41
Ryan Coakley
Like, look at that.
01:02:43
Ryan Coakley
You know, ah it's just never happened.
01:02:45
Denis Tyrell
And I think ironically, though, I don't like, i if I never have to make, um, a buoy, uh, it wouldn't hurt my feelings at all. Like those are not my jam, but I have been wowed by those.
01:03:00
Denis Tyrell
Like there's some, those, there's some fricking fantastic, just incredible builds.
01:03:08
Denis Tyrell
But, uh, yeah, I don't think I've, I've ever felt that way about NEDC or hunter either.
01:03:14
Denis Tyrell
kind of run of the mill.
01:03:14
Denis Tyrell
There's some awesome ones. Really well done and really cool, unique and very standout-ish. I know what you're going to say.
01:03:20
Ryan Coakley
There are some makers who come close to achieving that, like.
01:03:25
Denis Tyrell
You want me say it for you?
01:03:30
Ryan Coakley
Hundred percent. Also, why is his name escaping me?
01:03:35
Denis Tyrell
I would have bet the farm that that's who you're talking about.
01:03:39
Ryan Coakley
Well, him also. I mean, Seth is in a league of his own. That dude's on levels.
01:03:42
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. Mm-hmm.
01:03:45
Ryan Coakley
Noah made fun of me, said I was kissing his ass when he was on the show, and I didn't even realize it. Probably because he's so fucking good. I was like, dude, you're so fucking good. Oh, my God. But um Matt Gentry.
01:03:54
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, no, that's worthy.
01:03:59
Ryan Coakley
Yeah, he's another one. His EDC. They almost, for me, come to that point where I'm like, ooh. but it's it's not the same.
01:04:07
Ryan Coakley
It's something to do with culinary knives. I don't know what it is. Maybe it's because they cooked for a long time or I don't know.
01:04:12
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, that's it.
01:04:13
Ryan Coakley
Maybe it's part of why I like making them so much is because they sell really good.
01:04:21
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, that that was one of the the big kickers for myself.
01:04:25
Ryan Coakley
Yeah, the return on investment for the buyer is actually like tangible, you know,
01:04:30
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. I think it's natural progression for us to start making knives and want to sell them. But like how many how many hunters and how many knife nerds do you come in contact with on a daily basis?
01:04:42
Denis Tyrell
outside of Outside of the community.
01:04:45
Denis Tyrell
Not many. There's a handful, right? But everybody has a kitchen. Everybody wants to use a kitchen knife. Everybody gets cool about, you know, oh, you made, you know, like the opportunity for moving your product is definitely enhanced with culinary.
01:05:00
Denis Tyrell
My experience anyways.
01:05:01
Ryan Coakley
And just like, I feel like as business owners, we're naturally guided by our markets. So we're whatever selling more is what we're going to gravitate towards to whether we want to or not.
01:05:13
Ryan Coakley
It's almost like a subconscious. Like you got to feed your baby and your baby's eating a lot of Western style chef knives. So I got to make a lot more Western child chef knives, keep my baby alive.
01:05:26
Ryan Coakley
And it's just, if that analogy makes any sense, but
01:05:29
Ryan Coakley
I feel like that's part of it. We've talked about it on our show too, that the return on the investment for the buyer is much higher with a culinary knife than any other knife. I mean, even a hunting knife, most places have bag limits.
01:05:41
Ryan Coakley
You're only going to use that knife once a year. You know, if you buy a $1,500 beautiful Damascus Bowie, it's going to be a shelf queen.
01:05:53
Ryan Coakley
There's no return on investment. If you buy a really beautiful chef knife, It's going to get used all the time.
01:06:03
Ryan Coakley
I also market like I have the workhorses. Do you want a workhorse that you're not going to be afraid to use?
01:06:08
Ryan Coakley
That's going to be a belt finish. Stainless, nice handmade knife. Or do you want the Damascus shit to show all your homies how big your wiener is? You get this.
01:06:27
Denis Tyrell
um All right. So um I'm really interested in this one.
01:06:34
Denis Tyrell
Sediment aside, you've not been attached to anything that you've ever made.
01:06:44
Ryan Coakley
Do remember that Feather Damascus big-ass chef knife I made a few months back I raffled off?
01:06:51
Ryan Coakley
That was the knife that I was closest to keeping out of any knife I've ever made.
01:06:56
Denis Tyrell
And you've not done that.
01:06:57
Ryan Coakley
I've never kept a knife. The only ones I've kept are rejects. And they're so bad now because I've had them for years that they're like levels below what my reject knives now look like.
01:07:07
Ryan Coakley
So like I've been contemplating making myself some kitchen knives. But
01:07:12
Denis Tyrell
But they're in your kitchen.
01:07:13
Ryan Coakley
Yeah, but they're in my kitchen.
01:07:14
Ryan Coakley
They're re rejects.
01:07:15
Ryan Coakley
Like, they're all hidden tang. One of them, I glued the tang in and the blade was cocked.
01:07:21
Ryan Coakley
And I didn't realize until after it was dried. And I was like, well, we'll use the cock knife in my kitchen.
01:07:27
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, I have one.
01:07:27
Ryan Coakley
Another one, i snapped it yeah I snapped the tang off and my buddy Tig welded it back together. But you can see the welds above the bolster.
01:07:34
Ryan Coakley
So I kept that one.
01:07:39
Denis Tyrell
Any inspirations? Any makers that just get you going? Or did you did you were you attracted to so what something somebody was doing early on and that you've tried to like emulate?
01:07:51
Ryan Coakley
Noah Vashon.
01:07:53
Denis Tyrell
That's a good one.
01:07:54
Ryan Coakley
Yep, Noah Vashon. Because i was he was the first person I saw do the diamond grind. And I was like, I want to do that. So I was doing them for a while. But they take so much time. i was like, I'm going to stop making them so people stop buying them.
01:08:10
Ryan Coakley
And I haven't made one in a while. But yeah, Noah Vashon. Marekko. and I mean, and the longer you go, the higher the list gets because there's Josh Prince, there's, you know, Gabe to talk about Gabe again.
01:08:20
Denis Tyrell
Oh yeah. Yep.
01:08:26
Ryan Coakley
um all these guys, even like, uh, James Fleming, he puts out awesome work.
01:08:32
Ryan Coakley
Uh, Seth Lopez, um, the list just is never ending. Jason Knight, you know, I mean, he's, he does a different like type of knife and style than I usually do if I'm like left to my own devices.
01:08:46
Ryan Coakley
But when he puts out a chef knife, it is just, you know, I think he's done a couple.
01:08:51
Denis Tyrell
Hmm. I'm not sure I've ever seen a chef knife that he's put out.
01:08:56
Ryan Coakley
They've always got that same handle. And that' that escapes me.
01:08:59
Ryan Coakley
if i could If I could hone in on any one of my deficiencies, it would be my handle. It would be my ability to sculpt a handle.
01:09:08
Ryan Coakley
I fail. Every time I try and do those Jason Knight-style swooping butt Coke bottle-looking handles, I fail.
01:09:17
Ryan Coakley
don't know why. I've had people explain to me how to do it, and I'm like, uh...
01:09:22
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, apparently the most common answer I get is, it's just all about your your guidelines. You just wrote your guidelines. Yeah.
01:09:30
Ryan Coakley
like guidelines.
01:09:32
Ryan Coakley
I eyeball everything except for my center line.
01:09:34
Denis Tyrell
i I wish I could. I'll go to a guideline, though. But I haven't done many. haven't done any. Actually, I'm working on finishing up my first Hidden Tang now.
01:09:46
Denis Tyrell
So it's it's as close as it's ever been.
01:09:50
Ryan Coakley
For me, hidden tangs usually boil down to like geometric handles or, you know the traditional Japanese looking handles.
01:09:58
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, right. What do ah da da da da da da Yeah, so I just finally finished up. So I made ah Dennis a ah one of my paring knives, and I used the Rock Solid's GripTech scales, um which I think are...
01:10:24
Denis Tyrell
Awesome. I mean, I don't even know how to say it. like And finally getting to use it. One of the coolest things about seeing going to to Texas Blade Show was getting to see how many how much of that product is out there and being used right now.
01:10:40
Denis Tyrell
But seeing how everybody kind of finished it because it's not a very traditional type of finish that you do. For me, I can speak for myself. um But yeah, if you're in the market for some ah different kind of knife scales handles for your ah for your for your work go check out rock solid scales ah they got grip tech you go to the website there and Not only do they have their their flagship models too, but he's got a shit ton of stabilized wood, epoxy handles, just all all kinds of stuff. So Matt's a good dude. and Look forward to um seeing him in Atlanta here in a couple, it's like weeks now, dude. That's that's a little scary.
Knife Show Preparations and Community Support
01:11:23
Denis Tyrell
um But yeah, you can go there, use the discount code TTT10 for 10% off your next purchase. And while I'm out, I finished up that grip tech with some Pelican oil.
01:11:37
Denis Tyrell
So if you're also in the market for some premium wax, go check out Travis hands at Pelican paste.com. Uh, he's got hard wax, soft wax, Pelican oil, hand solve hand. He's got, even got some soap, some grippy soap. Did you ever get your hands on that?
01:11:49
Ryan Coakley
No, ah haven't.
01:11:50
Denis Tyrell
It was cool. It was good.
01:11:51
Ryan Coakley
I need some.
01:11:51
Denis Tyrell
and It's down to a nub now. So Travis, I may be, uh, I will be stopping by and seeing you. Hopefully you'll have some there at the ah blade show. He's going to have a ah table. this year. so I'm stoked for him.
01:12:03
Denis Tyrell
Um, that's another thing i was going to ask you have any, but before I get there, uh, the Pelican, uh, paste, uh, discount code, triple T 10, we'll get you 10% off your next, um, uh, your next purchase there.
01:12:17
Denis Tyrell
um you also just released some bad-ass shirts. Did you see those?
01:12:22
Denis Tyrell
Oh, dude, go check out go check out Pelican Paste on on IG. He just dropped some new shirts. Badass design. um I'm totally just like a steampunk Pelican deal. if It's my drippy wax on the wings and shit. It it came out really cool.
01:12:37
Denis Tyrell
So, um yeah, that's that. And then I was talking before we started the show here. ah You mentioned a ah new use for um for wax that I had not heard of before.
01:12:52
Ryan Coakley
I didn't know it was new. I've been doing it for as long as I can remember, but I use wax to bed my tangs.
01:13:02
Ryan Coakley
So when you do a hidden tang, you use on a chef knife anyways, usually glue everything together and then pull the knife out before it's fully set. So that you've got a relic. I mean, obviously the epoxy will fill in that hole a little bit, but you've got a relatively easier hole to, you know, broach out, but I use wax to do mine.
01:13:23
Ryan Coakley
And if you're, if you're doing a bolster, uh, I put the bolster on first before I wax anything, because if you try and slide the tank through the super tight bolster, it will just scrape all your wax off.
01:13:37
Denis Tyrell
Nice. Good deal. Pro tip from...
01:13:39
Ryan Coakley
I didn't know that was like a unknown thing.
01:13:41
Denis Tyrell
It might not be, but it is right now in this moment between you and I and our other four people listening.
01:13:48
Ryan Coakley
Yeah, it works because wax epoxy won't stick to wax.
01:13:51
Denis Tyrell
Well, there you go.
01:13:52
Ryan Coakley
So even if you forget, you can still just give it a couple love taps and it pops right out.
01:13:58
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. Yeah. All right. Well, Pelican pays for the win. um Any...
01:14:08
Denis Tyrell
think I heard you say this before, but I'm interested. Do you have any desire? We'll just say desire to ever have a table.
01:14:18
Denis Tyrell
That's all I'm asking.
01:14:20
Ryan Coakley
yeah Yes and no.
01:14:24
Ryan Coakley
If I feel like if I didn't sell anything, I would be so like emotionally crushed that I would like quit knife making. But if I, if I made a shitload of money at a show, I would be hooked forever.
01:14:38
Ryan Coakley
So I don't know. It's hard. I also hate like that interaction where I'm the salesman. You know what I mean? And I know i know when you're at a table and it's to your table, you're not acting like a salesman. You're just talking to people.
01:14:55
Ryan Coakley
But it's like not my jam. I don't know.
01:14:59
Denis Tyrell
so So that would be, that was the response that I thought that would be the the linchpin and a yay or an a nay. um I'm surprised to hear that if you're you're stressing out if you sold anything or not. But yeah, because it's definitely one of those things where you'
01:15:17
Denis Tyrell
you're put in ah in a position where you you got to get after it and and sell your product and sell yourself. I mean, and that's one of the things a house always says, right? 50% is is making it the other half is selling it right so um that is definitely on the forefront i have tremendous amount of trepidation behind it as well so even though i have this weird opportunity and i've done you know it in some way it's definitely a lot easier under the guise of somebody else's deal right but it
01:15:49
Ryan Coakley
Yeah, it depends on, I feel like there's a lot of factors with it, and you could almost break it down scientifically. I feel like the style of knife you do makes a huge difference.
01:16:01
Ryan Coakley
So if you're doing like traditional ABS style or like, you know, the stuff the old timers are doing, probably not going to sell that well.
01:16:09
Ryan Coakley
Micah has his own unique, more modern style, and he crushes it And he's like the sweetest dude in the world.
01:16:19
Denis Tyrell
So sexy to see, man. I, I love that guy. Micah's Micah's my dude, but yeah, it, that is, if there's a recipe that I think we could all follow, it's that right there, you know, not that you want to like completely rip off Micah done and everything that he's doing, but like to see the amount of work he puts in the hustle that he gets.
01:16:42
Denis Tyrell
And then when he's there, Um, that's, that's what he's about. yeah He's not, you know, the visiting and the bullshit and then the, and the, and the bro stuff happens after, but when he's at his table, he's, he's about his business and, and it, it shows cause he does well.
01:16:58
Ryan Coakley
He crushes it and he doesn't half-ass any aspect of all the little things you need to pay attention to when you're setting up your table. The display is awesome.
01:17:08
Ryan Coakley
How he has the knives out. So they're spaced out. So you're not like hitting other knives with knives when your customers are picking them up. They're each on their own. He buys all these little do-rag like bandanas and they all sit on the bandanas and you get the bandana when you buy the knife and He's got a magnetic stand for his culinary stuff and it's all just set up perfectly.
01:17:30
Ryan Coakley
And I don't know if that's just something he's good at or something somebody taught him.
01:17:30
Denis Tyrell
It's a good...
01:17:34
Ryan Coakley
But yeah, if I were to do a table, I would rip off everything Micah does. And he knows that and he would be proud to hear me say that.
01:17:43
Ryan Coakley
I think I would I would set my table up identical to his just with different knives.
01:17:47
Denis Tyrell
ah it would not be a, a bad route to follow for sure.
01:17:55
Denis Tyrell
That is one of those things. And then the rest of you just, you know, getting in out of your own way to, know, do the other part of it.
01:18:03
Ryan Coakley
Yeah, I think that's where I would struggle because you got to be enthusiastic when somebody walks up to your table. There's nothing that annoys me more at Blade when I walk by a table and the motherfuckers on his phone and ignoring everybody at his table.
01:18:16
Ryan Coakley
I'm like, dude, why did you why are you this is the largest knife show in the world?
01:18:20
Ryan Coakley
Why are you here? What are you doing?
01:18:21
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, I agree.
01:18:23
Ryan Coakley
Yeah, it's like, and Micah is the opposite of that.
01:18:28
Ryan Coakley
He's talking to you before you're even at his table. Not about his knives, just like, oh, hey, did you see the Cowboys or whatever Texans like, you know?
01:18:38
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. just creating that, that, uh, natural interaction and, and getting the conversation going. And then, you it's not like a hard sale, right.
01:18:47
Denis Tyrell
Or a cold call there, you're, they're at a knife show. ah They came for what you got. so you gotta, gotta get them in there. But yeah, I think that's, that is just an extremely, just the process of that is, you know, uh, absolutely.
01:19:06
Denis Tyrell
it creates a lot of fear for me. Um, but
01:19:08
Ryan Coakley
Yeah. There's a lot of work that goes in behind the scenes to transporting all your shit to the knife show, setting up your table after hours, tearing down your table after hours.
01:19:18
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. And it's all stuff I've, I've had the privilege to be a part of and, and, uh, get experience behind that. But again, doing it on your own is, is one of those things, which is the only reason why i say this because, uh, there is a shit ton of makers that we've seen, um that I've seen this year that are stepping out, um, and, and, and doing that this year. A lot of, a lot of first time tables. I saw it at, uh, Texas,
01:19:42
Denis Tyrell
um more people getting after it here in Atlanta and hats off to you guys, wishing you all the best of luck. And, you know, just seriously hats off and props for, for, for taking the chance and putting yourself out there. Right. I had somebody tell me, I think it was ah my buddy, John Ruff, one of ah Brent's friends.
01:19:59
Denis Tyrell
We were driving back from blade last year and he was just like, like, when are you going to do it? I'm like,
01:20:05
Denis Tyrell
you know but um I don't know. He's like, you're a fucking knife maker. This is what you're supposed to do. right You're supposed to be here. to like you know And as annoying as it was, like the more I thought about it,
01:20:18
Denis Tyrell
Um, you know, i don't I didn't have a definitive argument against it. Right. So ultimately i think as long as it remains a goal and something that I'm i'm interested in and striving for, I think that's really cool. So, uh, but lots of inspiration around from everybody else that's pulling the plug and getting after it. So
01:20:37
Ryan Coakley
Yeah, it depends on circumstance, too. If I hadn't a stumbled into batch work, which 100% was, i had no idea it even existed.
01:20:46
Ryan Coakley
i i just stumbled into it and I needed like an avenue to sell more knives. I would probably think way more seriously about doing it.
01:20:57
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. I get it. I get it.
01:21:00
Ryan Coakley
yeah ah You know, especially maybe the influx you're seeing is because we're being throttled still on social media. And I know everybody is.
01:21:08
Denis Tyrell
I'm all green check marks right now.
01:21:11
Ryan Coakley
Are you? Let me check mine.
01:21:12
Denis Tyrell
I'm out of jail.
01:21:13
Ryan Coakley
I haven't been posting knives because I've been afraid. They flagged Salem Straub's face.
01:21:22
Ryan Coakley
I posted as just a picture of his face for the podcast and they flagged it.
01:21:32
Ryan Coakley
Let me see here. Oh, too far. Oh, thirst trap.
01:21:40
Ryan Coakley
This is awesome.
01:21:40
Denis Tyrell
There's no talking going on.
01:21:41
Ryan Coakley
like and this is i Oh, I'm green too.
01:21:43
Denis Tyrell
i just zoned out in my phone and I i just realized that.
01:21:47
Ryan Coakley
Everything except for monetization says I can't give gifts or receive gifts.
01:21:53
Denis Tyrell
Well, there you go. Yeah. I was surprised to find that out too. So let us know if you're out of, out of the jail and all green as well. um Cause that's cool.
01:22:03
Ryan Coakley
Now, should I post a knife and then wait and see if I'm flagged by the end of this episode?
01:22:10
Ryan Coakley
Because I haven't posted a knife in like two months.
01:22:15
Denis Tyrell
No, I've been posting away. I never stopped. Just kept going.
01:22:20
Ryan Coakley
They updated Zuckerberg's programming. They must have updated their algorithms.
01:22:23
Denis Tyrell
and there you go so here on triple t we'd like to do a little segment uh speaking of ig uh that we call maker spotlight so it's a time where we grab a maker out of the social media realm and give them a shout out and talk them up so um is there somebody that you had in mind that you wanted to shout out today
01:22:46
Ryan Coakley
um There's a few. I'll just give them quick shout outs. Most of them are from Maine. Support the other local Maine makers. but ah One of them was War Crown Forge because he made the most hilarious merch shirt ever. and It's three swords. and It says, let us gingerly touch our tips on the shirt. I ordered one. I bought one. My wife posted it. She thought it was hilarious.
01:23:09
Ryan Coakley
um ah War Crown Forge.
01:23:09
Denis Tyrell
what What does that handle?
01:23:15
Ryan Coakley
He's got like 60,000 followers. He doesn't need my help, but that shirt is fucking hilarious.
01:23:19
Ryan Coakley
So it's like totally worth mentioning. ah Walker Knife Co. is a main maker. He's similar to me, but he does a lot of EDC stuff. He's way better at photography and social media than I am.
01:23:33
Ryan Coakley
ah Check him out. ah M. Bishop Blades out of Herman, Maine. He's 20 minutes away from me. He is ah just a small guy in his garage making cool one-off pieces.
01:23:47
Denis Tyrell
ah give me the Walker guy.
01:23:49
Ryan Coakley
Walker Knife Co.
01:23:49
Denis Tyrell
That's who we're going to pick. Walker knife. Go.
01:23:55
Ryan Coakley
on Instagram.
01:23:58
Ryan Coakley
Bear with me here.
01:24:01
Denis Tyrell
I think it's just Walker knives out of Maine.
01:24:04
Ryan Coakley
Yeah. yeah It's like an orange logo.
01:24:07
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:24:10
Denis Tyrell
All right, yeah, Walker walkern w a o k e yard Knives, Knives. um Oh, I'm a douchebag.
01:24:20
Ryan Coakley
You already follow him?
01:24:22
Denis Tyrell
No, i didn't. i Somehow I missed his follow, and I need to follow him back, so doing that now. Sorry.
01:24:30
Ryan Coakley
He reached out to me the other day to introduce himself. Apparently he listens to our podcast.
01:24:36
Ryan Coakley
And I was i was like, holy fuck, we have listeners, dude.
Social Media and Maker Spotlights
01:24:40
Ryan Coakley
every When everybody messages us, it's either they have a problem or a critique and they always message Noah. And I wonder, I'm starting to wonder why that is.
01:24:51
Denis Tyrell
Huh. Because you're unapproachable, dude.
01:24:54
Denis Tyrell
You're scary.
01:25:00
Denis Tyrell
You don't give fuck. They're just like, I don't know.
01:25:03
Ryan Coakley
because I'm going to be honest with you.
01:25:03
Denis Tyrell
I don't I'm kidding. I'm busting your balls.
01:25:06
Ryan Coakley
and It's because I'm missing the tooth, isn't it?
01:25:08
Denis Tyrell
You are anything but scary. You're anything but scary.
01:25:12
Ryan Coakley
I'm a teddy bear. I got a big, fat, morphic body.
01:25:15
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. Huggable.
01:25:16
Ryan Coakley
I do have strong hands, though.
01:25:19
Denis Tyrell
That's awesome.
01:25:19
Ryan Coakley
ah pull over I pull over chainsaws.
01:25:22
Denis Tyrell
There you go. Yeah. um I'm going to give this guy a walker knives. He's got 4,284 followers. um And I'm checking his page out right now. Really cool stuff.
01:25:33
Denis Tyrell
You are not shitting.
01:25:37
Ryan Coakley
I could be wrong. I believe he might be a main guide. Which, to much to most people, they have no idea how hard it is to become a main guide.
01:25:47
Denis Tyrell
It definitely got a guidey vibe here on this page. I was just thinking a lot of white river raft and stuff.
01:25:57
Ryan Coakley
i had meant I had mentioned on the show two weeks ago or last week when it was just me and Noah that I'm having my ashes spread at a place called Gulf Hagus in Maine. And it's 11 mile hike around a ravine that's all like whitewater rapids.
01:25:57
Denis Tyrell
Really cool.
01:26:10
Ryan Coakley
He sent me a video of him kayaking those rapids.
01:26:16
Ryan Coakley
And those are that's like water like you die, bro. There's no swimming in there. You know, it's like granite and waves.
01:26:28
Ryan Coakley
Yes, was impressed.
01:26:28
Denis Tyrell
It's pretty, though. I'm taking it.
01:26:30
Ryan Coakley
It's beautiful. It's awesome. I'm getting almost too old and feeble to hike it and it makes me sad.
01:26:40
Denis Tyrell
We'll get after it.
01:26:42
Ryan Coakley
It's, it's not like a go walk in the woods kind of hike. It's like legit. Like it hurts.
01:26:52
Denis Tyrell
Well, I have a maker. I think this guy's out of Italy. I'm going butcher his name like I do everybody else, but it's Alfredo Facciperi.
01:27:07
Ryan Coakley
Sounds pretty Italian.
01:27:08
Denis Tyrell

01:27:49
Denis Tyrell
Um, but just really awesome stuff. So, um, if you haven't, uh, not following him, go check them out. That's Alfredo. I'm going to spell that last name one more time. F A C C I P I E R I. Um, and go give them a follow and tell them the boys at triple T sent you and show them some love.
01:28:16
Denis Tyrell

01:28:20
Denis Tyrell
