Um, yeah, I, it's more freeing than anything, uh, being able to, you know, before, working as anybody who's worked multiple jobs or, you know, even one job that requires a lot of you, um, that goes away, you realize you have everything you've been trying to cram into every minute of free time or me time.

um you now have time to explore and do things. So as a part-time knife maker with a full-time job, it was, i was always rushing every evening. Whenever I would work on knives, it would limit my ability to do, to make and design new models. It would also limit the quantity I was able to do. And so that has all changed. And it's a,

freeing feeling gives me a little bit more of a sense of being able to spend time on the knives and and go another extra mile right do it yeah I'm sure you've seen a lot of hand sanding lately and that's always been the joke is i will do anything to belt finish a knife but yeah being able to have the time to pull some knives and do some hand sanding and and throw an extra level on there for for a select few is nice.

But yeah, no, I often wonder, and i was I talked to Dennis about this a while back, about how how much like your day job becomes a part of who you are, right? And then if I was to be put in a position um that where those problems no longer existed,

like that would be a ah very strange transition because you know, your job, if you're not full-time making, you know, your, what you do for a living becomes, you know, i'm I'm really trying to to find a balance between that of not letting that actually define me as who I am as a person, you know, that that is just a part of my life.

And, you know, it is an exchange, right? I exchange this in service in my time for compensation.

Cause I inherently would make probably the wrong choices. You know, that's why I don't like to work from home. Cause like the fridge and the couch are right next to you.

Yeah, it's it's still working. It's still fairly fresh, so it's finding that finding the rhythms that work. ah The interesting thing is the um it's all, you know, dictated by me. Obviously the customer orders and customers dictate a little, but I'm able, you know, it gives me a little freedom, but that, yeah, if you're not able to schedule that, it can be a dangerous thing.

Yeah, good. We actually didn't, normally we do a ham. We did not do a ham this year. We just had a turkey. Yeah, no, was good Thanksgiving. Spent it with my family and some friends and just super low key, which was really good and relaxing.

You know, we work together and hung out like a lot as you guys are all aware of. um But this time i really was focusing on the fact that we were intending on doing a couple of ah you know, either doing some,

some kind of forging or making a ah billet of some kind. And we really didn't have anything set in stone. so what, had what ended up happening was that he just did his thing and I just did my thing.

And i found that to be extremely enjoyable. Maybe it's because i have my, my shop time has been pretty limited, but, um, I kind of enjoy that. I think you and I were just talking about that the other day, but how cool it is to just have, i mean, makers in general, right. We spend a lot of time alone, um, doing what we do.

And most of us I hear, you know, are, are introverted and that doesn't really necessarily bother them. Right. But, um, I thought it was really cool for him to be doing something else, me to be doing something and, you know, then just stop for a second, talk, hey what do you think about this?

And, you know, kind of just have that kind of interaction without actually working on a, a project together was, was pretty cool. And I'm, I realized how grateful I am to have the opportunity to have somebody so close that, you know, I can do that when, um whenever, basically, you know, so you, you've had that opportunity or?

Yeah. um that's definitely one of the things that i miss about, um, being self-employed, working from home, um, is, you know, that camaraderie, the having people that, you know, even if it's something as little as when you mess up on something, kind of looking around and seeing if somebody else looked and be like, did you just see what I did?

He went to my shop. And yeah, it's fun because when you have two people that kind of know what they're working on or have something that they want to tinker around with and you can talk and each of you can be doing your own thing and it's a it's relaxing and it's fun.

I agree. i agree. um Yeah, so unintentionally, um it's not, I guess it's not. It had just been too long. So I ended up, ah even though I said I wasn't, I ended up jarrating a couple things.

um And I'm really excited about this one because I took a pattern of a ah chef knife that I had done that I absolutely hated the handle for.

And so i took I took that blade shape and then I kind of combined another handle that I've been shaped that I've been working on and put this together for kind of a new, newish kind of look on a a Damascus billet that Dennis and I made a long time ago.

i think he made a dagger out of it. It was a a basket weave of feather. Um, so, and I remember that because it was a feather, we ended up kind of, um, forging the the tip in on the press and the rough shaping the handle.

So I had basically the, the, a really kind of rough profile of a, of a chef knife, but it was a pretty big, pretty big billet.

It was a, it was a good process to kind of draw it out, sketch out, combine the two, put them all together. bummer part is though that after we did a quick tests test edge, um, looks like I got shorten it because, uh, the, when we, uh, fish mouth the, the tip to, to bring, uh, the, the feather down to a point, um,

high probability that there's a, a D lamb in the, uh, at the very tip. So I might have to trim it down, shorten it up a bit. It's not huge, but, um, may not come out as planned, but I think I'll heat treat it and, uh, and start the rough bevels and it'll become apparent whether I got to take it down a little bit, but we'll see.

We had, my mom came over, which was cool because she's had a, she's got some health stuff going on and had a pretty big pre-surgery procedure done that, um, earlier that week, just a couple days and everything turned out really good.

It's been good. Yeah, the holidays threw everything for, you know, everything got thrown off. It's time schedules and family in town. And so just took time with family. But that meant, oh, so last week I was, after Thanksgiving, I decided it was time to clean shop and reorganize. So that became a thing.
