Jamaica Trip and Well-being Travel

00:01:03
Speaker
Now that I have told you how wonderful Zencaster is for making podcasts, we should make one. one that will be well worth listening to liking downloading and subscribing to as with every episode of rest and recreation we won't be telling you what to think but we are hoping to make you think today's rest and recreation guest is Gemma Parry from the holidayfixer.com hello Gemma hi Michael how are you Well, I'm very well, thank you very much. But I don't think I'm quite as well as you, having said that, because you're just back from Jamaica. I am indeed. And I'm very excited to give you some very, like a good overview of Jamaica and what I experienced.
00:01:45
Speaker
I have been to Jamaica. It was my first ever real proper adulty type holiday. Love that. I'd passed all my exams and become an ah HR professional and it was my way of celebrating. So it's really, really great place. But that was a long time ago.
00:02:04
Speaker
I really do have very happy memories of Jamaica.

The Holiday Fixer's Mission

00:02:06
Speaker
But today our focus is going to be on travel for well-being. but For people who are new to Rest and Recreation and haven't heard from you before, please tell us a little bit about what theholidayfixer.com is. So the Holiday Fixer is all about supporting clients, helping them create holidays that they are wanting to do.
00:02:28
Speaker
And I guess you could really say fixing the holiday before it happens. It is about fixing something so it's perfect or as near as perfect as can be before you go. Because I suppose, as with most things in life, people have ideas about things. definite But without the experience and the knowledge...

Expanding Well-being Travel

00:02:49
Speaker
fulfilling that idea can be very difficult absolutely completely agree and I think it also goes back to the previous podcast we did on slow travel it's really establishing what they want to do you know what their plans are what they want to achieve and helping them create that in the best way possible they're in safe hands definitely in safe hands with Gemma the holiday fixer Cool stuff. Let's talk about all of this well-being travel. Absolutely.
00:03:16
Speaker
One of the things about travel and holidays is that it's an important part of our well-being strategy is to take a break. Agree. You know, from old everything else and just put ourselves in a different type of situation, whether that's 20 miles down the road or 20,000 miles somewhere else in the world. but still the The process of taking a holiday is going to help us with our well-being.
00:03:42
Speaker
But from a travel industry perspective, what does well-being mean? Well-being now really goes beyond what you would usually class as spa day or a yoga class. It's more about the intentional experiences that you want to achieve Is it a physical? Is it a mental? Is it emotional?
00:04:02
Speaker
There are so many elements to that. Your mental well-being, whether that be through a digital detox, you leaving your laptop at home, are you wanting a physical renewal, which is achieved through various activities, spa treatments, you know, eating healthily, not drinking a lot, etc.

Cuisine and Travel Experience

00:04:21
Speaker
emotional connections and again that cultural immersion that we were talking about last time or if you just want spiritual growth I mean there's there's lots of pillars that can be achieved through well-being travel it's not about coming home being exhausted it's about coming home and feeling energized to then you know recalibrate yourself back into the big bad world of work We all love our jobs, I'm sure. But the going away and recharging. And I quite like this idea of a digital detox and not being available. And then also you mentioned about food as well. Yep, absolutely.
00:04:57
Speaker
Which makes me think about all the jerk pork and the jerk chicken in in Jamaica oh as well. The food was incredible in Jamaica. It really is a country that now has my heart. So we're But it can be part of well-being is just not having access to the fast food chains or the meals that are taken in a rush.
00:05:17
Speaker
And actually knowing that the place that you're going to is going to serve you vegetables that haven't traveled thousands of miles. But the local food cooked by local people coming away, feeling refreshed because your body is being refreshed by the diet that you've had. Agree, completely agree.
00:05:34
Speaker
And I did actually experience some very new cuisines in in Jamaica, some some food that was completely off my radar, but um I was pleasantly surprised.

Preparation for Well-being Resorts

00:05:47
Speaker
What were those? and A boiled banana. Oh, I know random, but absolutely delicious with breakfast. So yeah, there was there was a couple of things out there that was like, Oh, this is really nice. I mean, I wouldn't, but you know, I was very fortunate to be hosted by the Jamaican tourist board. And and we had a fabulous host with us. And, um you know, i I was very much like, okay, take me and show me what everything is so I can try it Do they boil the banana skin on? Yeah, green bananas, they boil them with the skin on. So it it basically keeps them green and keeps them fresh.
00:06:22
Speaker
Oh, yeah. My first experience of plantains was in Jamaica. And um i am ah I'm not so much a fan of bananas and in the UK anyway. But in in Jamaica, the bananas were all right.
00:06:35
Speaker
But the plantains were fantastic. Yeah. Yeah. They've got lots of lots of different types of plantains out there. Yeah. But yeah, main mainly hot, hot and spicy. Yeah. And they did seasonal soft drinks as well. So whatever fruit was happened to be the harvesting at a particular time. So there was like, I suppose you'd say the surplus of that particular fruit would end up being made into a soft drink. Nice. Yeah.
00:07:00
Speaker
And oh all sorts of different flavours. Yeah, I love that. Eating seasonally, of course, is one of those key elements of of well-being, having fruit and vegetables when it's in season absolutely

From Package Holidays to Volunteering

00:07:11
Speaker
and then preserving it going further forward. you know We'll have to swap chutney recipes at some point. but the love I'd love a good chutney.
00:07:21
Speaker
If you're thinking about going to a well-being resort and you want one of these experiences that is much more focused on your health, your well-being, is there preparation that people should do to begin with before they actually arrive? Yeah. Absolutely.
00:07:37
Speaker
i think preparation is key and more more often overlooked. I think it's really about setting yourself realistic expectations about what what actually do you want to achieve? Is it stress relief? Is it fitness? Is it spiritual growth?
00:07:52
Speaker
Being honest and open about your wellness goals. The key here is understanding what people are looking for. and being ah them being ah open about what they want to achieve. And that's where I really come in to help match those wellness goals with the multitude of suppliers that are out there.
00:08:10
Speaker
Some that I've experienced, some that I haven't. Just going back to Jamaica, I went to a beautiful hotel called Half Moon. They have a turtle sanctuary. And I actually realised how unexpected, that unexpected experience provided me with such a wellness benefit because I was seeing it in its natural inhabitant. And it was just honestly, it was mind blowing. All well being requires different preparation. So it just really depends on really what what you're looking to achieve. And then you'll be able to fully immerse yourself in in that.
00:08:43
Speaker
Yes, just sitting and watching animals, wild animals, do their thing. i know. It's amazingly relaxing. It's very emotional too, to be honest. I was like, oh, I was really taken aback.
00:08:53
Speaker
One of those really lovely moments that I brought home with me. Yes, I had a similar experience in Hawaii on the big island. I did the bus tour that goes round the island and we stopped at the side of the road and there didn't seem to be anything about. And then the driver said, look at the sea.
00:09:11
Speaker
And there were sea turtles oh wow in the sea. And it was like, I don't need a camera to this. They're just there doing their thing. And it's like, do we have to go? Yeah.
00:09:25
Speaker
I agree. I agree. We have to go. There was just this majestic, every animal is majestic when it's in its environment doing its thing and just doesn't care that we're watching or not.
00:09:37
Speaker
But to actually see them was, I feel, you know, and very blessed to have had that opportunity.

Community Engagement Emphasis

00:09:43
Speaker
agree. I know exactly what you mean. The research that people do when we say, okay you you go to a hotel, they have a sanctuary, you've got these turtles, it a it's it's something that they're trying to do, part of their community, social responsibility and all those sorts of things.
00:09:59
Speaker
But are there opportunities to do well-being things which would... actually put you in the situation where you are working with nature so you're going on holiday for your well-being but it's it's a it's a holiday but you're there to do good work in in the in nature absolutely i mean Again, an example in Jamaica, lots of hotels offer volunteering or they have local groups that they support with local villages, with schools, with medical.
00:10:31
Speaker
And there's always opportunities

Tailored Well-being Experiences

00:10:32
Speaker
to go and visit these areas. So again, it comes back to really understanding what what you want to achieve from your wellness break and volunteering in in that local tourism can be fascinating and really beneficial.
00:10:44
Speaker
Yes, there's been a development or an evolution in travel. And I suppose when people started going on package holidays, it was to sit by the beach and eat the same food and drink the same drinks that you had at home. But you were somewhere that was hot. Then you ah you moved on to the big resorts where the idea was to keep tourists in the resort so that money was spent yeah in the resort.
00:11:06
Speaker
They're all inclusive. And then you go out on tours round and see what was happening. And now I think there's much more of this. Well, if you're going to go out, and do something positive, do something constructive.
00:11:17
Speaker
Either learn about what it is that people are doing, learn about the local place that you have gone to, or actually get involved in what they are doing contribute to the work that they are doing, not just financially make a donation, but actually bring a skill that you've got or you can ah learn or support someone else with a skill and actually get involved in the community.
00:11:40
Speaker
And it's great that the hotels are organizing that in a place like Jamaica, because previously yeah you'd be very much on your own and trying to learn about a country. But now, yeah, you can go back to the hotel. But when you're in a foreign country, you really want that sort of support, don't you? Absolutely. And I think it's important because ultimately, at the end of the day,
00:12:03
Speaker
These countries are trying to capture your attention. So it needs to be engaging for everybody because everybody's hobbies and needs are completely different. It's not one size fits all.
00:12:14
Speaker
Yeah, each hotel, each resort will have its own sort of specialism, like organisations over here and individuals.

Customized Wellness Breaks and Travel Tips

00:12:22
Speaker
We all have our favourite charities, our favourite causes. And yeah you mentioned as well about spiritual wellbeing and those types of yeah holidays. And I'm a big fan of the BBC Two programme Pilgrimage. And yes, absolutely. But I think, you know, all of these brands, I think they offer something different and...
00:12:42
Speaker
i I mean, i I was lucky enough when I went to Grenada, I went to the Six Senses. Their overall wellness program is kind of on another level, not something that I've really seen or experienced before. How they pick you up from the airport and you're going through breathing techniques to make sure that you're relaxed and calm by the time you reach this absolutely beautiful hotel.
00:13:04
Speaker
When you come into the reception and there's lots of dried fruit and dried herbs and things, so you pick out some things and then they make you a lovely tea. Really, this whole wellness journey is created for you. And the science behind it was just mind-blowing. The therapists there that are trained to to see if you're actually wanting engagement or you're needing relaxation They've got these sleep programs and obviously it all comes at a price, but the food, it's all day, it changes daily. and And the chef there is kind of going out into their gardens and getting all the fruit and the veg. It was just honestly, it was such a magical experience.
00:13:40
Speaker
And I really love to watch programs like Amazing Hotels, you know, the like the lobby with Monica Galletti, because I absolutely love her. She did a trip to the Maldives and she stayed at Jolie. Jolie is that it means the joy of living. Their wellness just takes it to another level as well. Kind of having the, that their nature ah surrounding all the treatments that they have from the water villas where you have your massages and the hearing, hearing the sea and, you know, just that lovely smell of the sea air. And it's just, it really just offers so much more, but you know, there are a multitude of suppliers out there that are incredible at what they do and offering wellbeing.
00:14:21
Speaker
Yeah, I remember another episode of that series, Life behind Beyond the Lobby, where they were at hotel in Morocco where everyone who worked there was local and all the food was local and all the treatments, everything was delivered by local people.
00:14:39
Speaker
And you get the the North African experience so of well-being. we could you know There are lots and lots of different options available. Absolutely. it really does come down to working out what it is that you as an individual yeah need.
00:14:55
Speaker
What sort of questions do you ask people when they sort of say, we we need to a detox? If I if i came to see you and said, I really need a detox, i'm I'm reaching burnout. What sort of questions would you ask me to help identify what type of wellness break I needed? Well, you've you've kind of, you said it already, you need a mind and you need a body detox.
00:15:17
Speaker
wellness break, you're, you know, if you're reaching burnout, it's a case of stopping, stripping back to basics, having some downtime, having some relaxation, really feeding your your body and your mind with, with quietness, you know,
00:15:32
Speaker
not in the daily grind of Monday to Friday. And there are a multitude of of places that you could go to to achieve that. Again, it you know, one question I always ask my clients is how how far are you willing to fly?
00:15:45
Speaker
Because that really does kind of come into play. But, you know, whether it's Europe or further afield, there are fabulous hotels. Zoetree is one of them. They offer endless privileges and it's really a concept that rather than you having to choose what you think you need, they'll present you with options of what you need and it's kind of established pre-travel.

Reducing Travel Stress

00:16:08
Speaker
So all of those conversations about what you're kind of currently experiencing, you know, whether you're feeling poorly or you need a boost or whatever, that's all done for you before you arrive, which I think is really lovely.
00:16:21
Speaker
It is. It sounds a very practical approach, to be honest, because I think one of the dangers with this sort of thing, like I need a proper break type of thing, I need to do something for my health and well-being. I agree.
00:16:34
Speaker
it's like You know that you need to do something. Yeah, but what but what? But what? What do I need to do? And I think in any so in in anything, it's a bit of a it's bit of an um ah overwhelming market.
00:16:45
Speaker
Unless you really know what you're looking for and what everybody offers, that could be as much of a burnout situation than actually saying that you need to go away. So that's really where I come into play. And I think helping people and have relationships that their break that really starts from those first initial discussions because it's about somebody being open and honest about what they need what they're currently going through and how I can help them well-being really starts from when you go so there's there's lots of things that I can recommend and I think maybe sometimes people overlook that for an example going to the airport can be stressful
00:17:25
Speaker
I always say, well, let's start from the beginning. Let's get you fast track security. You know, a VIP lounge that can be a really good option. Oh, you're not wrong there. like You're not wrong

VIP Experiences and Relaxation

00:17:37
Speaker
there. airport lounge Everybody loves an airport lounge, a pre-buffet before your buffet. Yeah.
00:17:43
Speaker
and And also lots of countries offer those VIP immigration packages now. I experienced one when I went to Mauritius and we were literally taken straight off the plane to an air conditioned building where we were given beautiful food, a glass of champagne.
00:18:01
Speaker
Whilst the immigration officer that was present took our passports, did everything whilst we sat down and we enjoyed the local delight. Same in Jamaica that I've experienced. You know, it really just just does provide you with a different level of relaxation. And it's not queuing and because I hate queuing and I'm sure you probably do too.
00:18:21
Speaker
It can be quite nice to experience if you're if you're standing and queuing next to someone who's interesting and youre having a conversation with them. That's a great way to pass the time and and to reduce the stress of the queuing.
00:18:31
Speaker
it's ah You can't always guarantee that. i half expect to have those sorts of VIP experiences in places like Mauritius and Jamaica, but... I've experienced them in places like Lagos in Nigeria, where you know the whole process is, oh, we've done it.
00:18:47
Speaker
Well, thanks very much. And now we're into ah into a car and being whisked away to the to the hotel. it's ah But I do agree with you that if you are going to go away on a holiday, which you want to have some relaxation, the most stressful part of the holiday can often be the travel.

Choosing Destinations for Well-being

00:19:06
Speaker
And you asked a little few minutes ago about...
00:19:09
Speaker
asking people how far do you want to travel yeah and it can be great to go off to somewhere like the Maldives or or even Jamaica that's but you're crossing the Atlantic you're crossing continents time zone and that's a long flight yeah and you unless you're prepared to invest in turning left or being at near the front of the plane you have got to accept that your travel is going to be in in in the coach area of the plane the world traveler And that might not be as comfortable in other areas. So a shorter flight would probably be better for you. And it's about discovering...
00:19:49
Speaker
what you can have closer to home that is going to meet your needs rather than, are we flew to so-and-so. Yeah. Yeah. It's what is the outcome that you want from this break?
00:20:01
Speaker
Then how do you want to come back? And part of me, you know, thinks like it's worth finding somewhere that isn't too far away that is going to meet your needs. Check that all out with someone like yourself. Yeah.
00:20:12
Speaker
Flying out on a ah cheapest ticket that you can find, a decent ticket that you can find and actually get to where you want to go. yeah And then to maintain the benefits of the well-being experience that you've had, yeah upgrade on the flight back. Yeah, yeah.
00:20:28
Speaker
So absolutely, because you're spending all this money to go away and you want to not come home with burnout. You don't want to come home being exhausted. The key is really here is treating wellness travel as an investment in yourself, not as an expense.
00:20:45
Speaker
And I think sometimes, like you just said, turning left or right, it's weighing up the cost versus actually what the outcome is. Ultimately, the outcome is coming home completely relaxed and you're coming back in with a fresh mind, able to go in and do your job, do it well,
00:21:02
Speaker
Yes, you don't want to come back feeling as if you need a holiday to recover from the holiday. In this day and age, we're very much focused on people's mental health. This has to be prioritised as a person individually.
00:21:15
Speaker
Because if you're going towards burnout, really, you're not living life, being happy and healthy is the only things, you know, we have really that we can look after and manage ourselves.

Wellness Travel as Self-care Investment

00:21:25
Speaker
So it's really, really key to to know that it's not just about the money it is investing in yourself and making yourself a better person. That sounds like a good justification for upgrading on everything.
00:21:40
Speaker
Not everything. Not everything, but just, I suppose if you're going to go away but and and do something which is around your wellbeing, what you do need to be thinking about is like, okay, this is not just a holiday.
00:21:53
Speaker
This is something, like you say, an investment. And before you get on the plane to leave, then you need to be thinking, okay, what is it that I want to be thinking in 12 months time yeah as a result of this break?
00:22:06
Speaker
And I also have to point out that we're talking about Getting on planes, you don't need to get on a plane to find a wellness break. You don't. There's plenty of trains. There are plenty of trains. you could There are plenty of opportunities within the United Kingdom as well.
00:22:23
Speaker
And there is also, obviously, I suspect, cruise lines that offer the same sort of thing. Yeah, there's some fabulous spas in the UK and I will frequently go with my best friend. We'll go and have a day at the spa and just really just chill, relax, have a nice massage, feel recalibrated, ready to come back and scream at the kids.
00:22:47
Speaker
That's not the point. is it's like it's It's a nice, funny little thing to say, you know, we go away, get recalibrated, then come back and return to normal life. they If we're going to do it, if we're going to make an investment in ourselves that's and in our wellbeing, we need to be thinking, okay, this this break that I'm taking in order to improve my health and my wellbeing is the starting point, not an end point.
00:23:13
Speaker
Agree. I'm wiping the slate clean of everything from the past, so to speak, and but using this as an opportunity to rebuild.

Hotel Experiences and Conclusion

00:23:23
Speaker
Completely agree.
00:23:24
Speaker
Completely agree. Yeah. Where did you stay when you were in Jamaica? There's a new property that's just opened called the Princess Grand. Princess hotels are predominantly in and around Europe, but they've got one in Jamaica now. So they have the family side, they have ah an adults only side.
00:23:43
Speaker
um And it was just such a stunning hotel based on a peninsula. just gorgeous kind of sea and the food was phenomenal the people the staff were just all so friendly and accommodating and helpful i mean it's it's a new new hotel so it's it's it's big but it's not it it doesn't feel massive and we also got to visit a couple of other ones there was the couple San Suzy which was absolutely beautiful and and really this is a good one for well-being travel because
00:24:14
Speaker
It's got loads of its own mineral sort of pools around the hotel, ah stunning waterfall. And just really, you just felt really at home. And it was just really special to have sort of the natural environment around you.
00:24:27
Speaker
We went to the S Hotel, which again was lovely, fabulous lunch there. And just a really kind of boutiquey sort of shn very Chanel, very Vogue type vibe. You must have felt at home then, Gemma.
00:24:39
Speaker
absolutely darling yes it was really lovely and then half moon that we were lucky enough to stay in was just the most stunning property had the turtle sanctuary it's got this amazing golf course which my husband was very intrigued about just the staff and and everything really geared up for children yeah just overall all it was just wonderful really wonderful we did it explore a couple of different areas of Jamaica but it really just was the tip of the iceberg we got to experience the majestic mountain which I will never do again because you have to go up in this the gondolas you go up when you're skiing well this was one of those that you went all the way up into the mountain it's about a 15 minute ride on this thing to go up to the top and I literally my knuckles were white by the time I got to the top
00:25:30
Speaker
And then they have all these like toboggans and pools and stuff. It was really cool, really lovely day out. But the most magical one for me was the Dunn's River waterfall. Oh, I remember it well.
00:25:43
Speaker
And yeah, it's just so peaceful and tranquil and really was going back to nature. It wasn't overly crowded. You know, the the guides that take you up were really lovely.
00:25:54
Speaker
i'd actually hurt my knee a couple of years ago and I was a bit worried about it, but they were just so lovely and kind about it and took me by the hand and made sure I was okay. And just some of the photos I've got from there just really stay in my heart.
00:26:07
Speaker
But, you know, as I said, Jamaica is a very big country and it really was the tip of the iceberg. So, yeah, I can't wait to go back. I'm already planning a little Perry family holiday, hopefully for next year.
00:26:18
Speaker
Oh, well, thank you very much for telling us about it. And we'll have to find out more about what you do next year in Jamaica. But for today, Gemma, it's been really great to have a chat with you about wellbeing travel. And thank you mike thank you very much for helping me make such an interesting episode of Rest and Recreation. Thank you.
00:26:36
Speaker
I am Michael Millward, the Managing Director of Abbasida. In this episode of Rest and Recreation, I have been having a conversation with Gemma Perry from theholidayfixer.com about about wellbeing travel.
