Sometime digital nomad Wendy Sellers reminisces about her travels in the USA and beyond. Find out how she did it.

Where Wendy Sellers grew up, people weren’t really expected to travel. You went to school, you got a job, had a family and then the next generation repeated.

All that changed when Wendy was working as an independent HR consultant and a friend invited her to go travelling.

Now Wendy is an avid traveller. She has visited all fifty US states and also travelled internationally as well.

In this episode of Rest and Recreation, the work life balance podcast from Abeceder Wendy explains to host Michael Millward

  • Why she wanted to travel
  • How she fits work into her passion for travel
  • How travel has enriched her life
  • How she travelled and how she prefers to travel now
  • Where she would revisit.

This episode will inspire you to embark on your own travel adventure

Wendy's HR Journey and Passion for Travel

00:01:26
Speaker
Today's rest and recreation guest is Wendy Sellers, the owner of The HR Lady, an HR consultancy based in Florida.
00:01:35
Speaker
Now I have visited Florida. It was one of those trips that involved lots and lots of ups and downs on the roller coasters. I would go again And when I do go again, I will make all of my travel arrangements at the Ultimate Travel Club because that is where I can access trade prices on flights, hotels, trains, holidays and all sorts of other travel-related purchases.

00:02:16
Speaker
Hello, Wendy. Hi, thanks for having me. Oh, it's great. I'm really looking forward to finding out more about your big trip around the United States and visiting, well, all 50 of them.
00:02:30
Speaker
Please, could we just start by you telling me a little bit more about the HR lady? Sure. So that's the name of my company, The HR Lady. I actually have two trademarks on that as well.
00:02:41
Speaker
um I have been in ah HR for almost 30 years, probably about, I would say, 12 years ago. I said, you know what? I want to help as many people as possible, and I can't do that in a corporate job.
00:02:54
Speaker
So I went out and started my own company, eventually, you know, grouped up with some other ladies who were doing other types of services for businesses. And then a little bit pre-pandemic, I went out back on my own again. And the majority of what I do is management training and teaching small business owners who probably maybe never have HR or will not have HR because of their headcount size.
00:03:21
Speaker
I teach them how to, you know, know how to be HR. And then i love, love, love mentoring younger people or just people that are new into the ah HR field to say, hey, you want to be HR?
00:03:33
Speaker
Buckle up because it's a rough ride sometimes. It is a rough ride. I've been in HR now in 2025. two thousand twenty five I will have my 44th anniversary later this month in August. So that's 44 years in HR.
00:03:52
Speaker
I kept young on it though, but I know what you mean. It can at times be a very rough ride. You are having to tell people things that they don't necessarily want to hear, but you have to tell them in a way that makes it a little bit more palatable.
00:04:07
Speaker
But yeah, I really like talking to other HR people. So you have this career, you're running this business. What makes you want to sort of go off and visit all 50 US states?
00:04:20
Speaker
You know, I just, I love to travel. I saw a quote one, one time and it's like, go someplace you've never been before. but then I've expanded that to talk with people you would never talk to before.
00:04:32
Speaker
Then more importantly, actually listen and learn because When we were born, like I was born in Pennsylvania and no one really in that area left. You just grew up there and that maybe you went to the Jersey shore or something like that.
00:04:47
Speaker
But then you just get into group think, in my opinion. And so you don't get to really know all these different people that are around in the United States or around the world. So I had the opportunity when I was younger in my professional career, you know, one of my friends said, hey I want to travel. And I'm like, sign me up, let's go. And so we went all over the country and then started traveling a little bit all over the world too. In fact, I just got back last week from Portugal and that was such an amazing experience.
00:05:19
Speaker
that I can't wait to go and explore more of the country. And I also have a a ah happy hour meeting this afternoon discussing going to Mexico. So i'm I'm very excited about that. I just want to learn from other people so that I realize like, you know what, there's so much more than beyond the United States and beyond wherever you live. Yes.
00:05:40
Speaker
I once was in Africa and somebody said to me, the person who's only eaten his wife's food thinks she is the best cook in the world. And you have to visit other places, experience other food, other ways of life um in order to then work out what it is that you really like and the person that you really want to be. Yes.
00:06:01
Speaker
You've just come back from Portugal. I'm all full of questions about how you get to Portugal from the United States. is' like, is it a direct flight? Do you have to change somewhere? All sorts of things, but that's not the purpose of today's call.

Balancing HR Career with Traveling

00:06:16
Speaker
You are self-employed, and I suppose people could say, well, you're self-employed, you can organize your time so you can take all of these various different holidays. But i know that as a self-employed person, especially in h you can't really take a holiday. So how do you manage keeping up the service to your clients whilst you are doing your traveling?
00:06:41
Speaker
Yeah, that's a very good question. So i would i would have a different answer a couple of years ago versus now. so this and I'll just give you an example. So this trip that I just took to Portugal, some of my other friends that were going, they were going two, three weeks. And and me and my friend that went, because there was an event that we were attending, decided we can't, we we both can't take that much time off of work, her from her corporate job and me from my job. So we just crammed as much as possible within a seven, eight day period.
00:07:08
Speaker
and I let my clients know I'm going to be on vacation and they were okay with that. Now that took me a long time to get to that point with my clients trusting me and me not looking at my email. Little side note here.
00:07:23
Speaker
I can't stop looking at my email. However, my internet or my cell phone service provider did me a favor and gave me no service while I was in Portugal. Okay.
00:07:35
Speaker
So I had no choice. The only time I could look at my email and respond is if I went to like a restaurant or a hotel and hooked up on Wi-Fi. But it ended up being the best thing possible because I found out that, you know what? No, my clients respected me.
00:07:49
Speaker
And they said, you're on vacation. I'm only going to call or text you. Or email you if there's a true emergency. And I only had two. So I was very happy. And honestly, Michael, it wasn't really that much of an emergency, but they felt it was.
00:08:03
Speaker
yeah So when I had time, I responded and that was it. yes Now, when we get to the point of my cross country trip, I was gone for 69 days. So I worked throughout that trip.
00:08:14
Speaker
Yeah, 69 days. But how many, there are 50 states and I don't believe that you've done them all in like just one after the other. You've, you have over a period of time visited all 50. Yes. So just ah recently I completed my last date, which was Kentucky.
00:08:37
Speaker
In 2021, did cross-country RV trip by myself in my 38-foot motor home from Florida, to California and back and went through 14 states over 69 days.
00:08:51
Speaker
And it was just amazing. Some of the people that I met, I'm still friends with today. In fact, I i id live in my RV and met people in Kansas and I live in their yard. So in Florida, it's just been an amazing experience to really open my eyes that The more we think we're different, we're actually more similar than we ever really thought about. Unfortunately, social media and the news divides us a little bit more.
00:09:21
Speaker
But yeah, 50 states plus D.C., been to them all, had different experiences, and i would definitely, I would do it again, and I probably will continue to travel to many different states. Yes.
00:09:32
Speaker
Yeah. RV, recreational vehicle, that is 38 feet long. feet long And it does sound like ah something of is a reasonable size bungalow.
00:09:45
Speaker
its so It's a big vehicle. Yes, that motorhome was huge. I don't have that one anymore. um on my cross-country RV trip by myself, I got in an accident.
00:09:56
Speaker
um Anything possible that could happen, happened. And I just had to keep laughing it up and saying, okay, let's get this fixed. Put this over here. Go to this shop.
00:10:08
Speaker
And then when I finally did return back to Florida after a short period of time, I got rid of the 38-foot motorhome that you drive. And I have a much smaller, brand-new RV that honestly is not moving this moving from my yard because I just go and rent a van or get in an airplane, get in a car, and ah be more than happy to stay in a hotel now. Yeah. There is something very nice about being in a hotel.
00:10:36
Speaker
I know that when I did my little bit of traveling around the some parts of the United States, I relished the ah the Greyhound buses, the long distance buses, and strangely the bus stations. You met such interesting people.
00:10:54
Speaker
in the bus stations. And all you need to do is sort of say to someone like, do you know where the water fountain is? or And you can get into a conversation with people. And it's really, I just loved it. It was so great. And you see so much more of their countries. You're traveling, aren't you?
00:11:11
Speaker
Rather than just going from A to B, you are traveling. And there's a bigger connection between you and that travel than simply if you fly over it or you...
00:11:23
Speaker
go through it on a train. Yeah. I mean, traveling, it just, if you, if you're willing to listen and let other people talk and then actually listen to the the messages, you can learn so much from our neighbors, whether they're, you know, a block away or a whole country away. Um, you can just learn so much and you learn a lot about yourself too, which really, you know, that takes a lot of emotional growth to do.
00:11:49
Speaker
Yes, it's the HR professional in you, isn't it? You're just fascinated by people. Yeah, I really am. I mean, sometimes they drive me crazy, right? But um if they didn't drive you crazy, maybe you didn't ah you you wouldn't sit and learn and go, okay, why does this bother me? So I am ah very passionate about learning.
00:12:07
Speaker
I don't always retain retain everything, especially if you're on a fast, fast-paced trip. Take pictures and then just make sure you're going for the pictures when you get back so you can do notes. I myself created a whole Facebook page just dedicated to travel quite some time ago. And then I post my pictures on there with notes so that I can go back and remember, where was that winery at? Where was that...
00:12:32
Speaker
you know, golf course at, and then I can go through my Facebook pages and share the fun with other people. So then when they're in that state or that country, they can maybe go check out what I checked out as well.
00:12:44
Speaker
Yes. Yeah. I mean, 50 states, you know, when i found out about, um, you doing the, you're visiting all 50 states of the United States, I sat down with a piece of paper and a pencil and started to like work through which states do I know the name of.
00:13:04
Speaker
Oh yeah. And how did you do? I got up to about 47, 48. Wow. Very good. and There were some of the um the smaller ones like Rhode Island that um I hadn't got onto the list.
00:13:20
Speaker
Yeah, there's definitely some. And then of course in the United States, then we have territories as well. So we have DC, we have Puerto Rico, and then we have the US Virgin Islands. And I have also went to all of those.
00:13:33
Speaker
Yes. Yeah. Out of all of the places that you've been to, of those 50 states

Challenges and Joys of RV Traveling

00:13:39
Speaker
and territories, yeah which one would you say would be first on your list to go back to?
00:13:45
Speaker
Oh, boy. I mean, i I'm going to say probably somewhere out west, you know, like Colorado or even California. and it's because they're so big and diverse.
00:13:59
Speaker
You can be in one corner of Colorado and it's a different feeling than in the another section. and then California is like a country in itself. That whole coast is um that you go from, you know, beach vibes and yeah all the way to you know now all of a sudden you're you're running these small businesses and just so so much diversity.
00:14:21
Speaker
But then like you just mentioned, there's little tiny states that are more like counties and you can probably do ah two or three small tiny states all at once, especially if you have some kind of public transportation. So it's a good question. I mean, I really probably have to say You know, I live in Florida, um don't necessarily like the politics of anywhere in the United States at this point, but I love living in Florida.
00:14:46
Speaker
And I think it's because I grew up on the East Coast. It still keeps me closer to home. And to be fair, I can get to Europe a little bit quicker being on this coast.
00:15:00
Speaker
Well, being on the east coast of America, United States, and flying across the Atlantic, I always thought it is like if you're on the west coast, you're flying twice across the Atlantic. It's the same sort of distance in my mind.
00:15:14
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, it's ah it's a long distance to get across the United States if you're going from west to east. But, you know, to be fair, maybe you're going, you know, to Japan or, or you know, even Australia, you might be a little bit little bit closer. But fortunately, we have these wonderful things called airplanes, which sometimes will just take the life out of you, though.
00:15:36
Speaker
So I was so happy to be able to just have control of my trip when I had when I did the the ah RV trip for 69 days and then I also laughed like yeah you didn't really have control the world had control and it laughed at you Wendy well talking about not having control what was the scariest experience that you had on that on that big trip ah the The scariest experience was um I wasn't too far into it. I was in an area ah that I, it was mostly truckers and I blew out not one, but two tires on a 38 foot RV by myself in the middle of nowhere. and
00:16:23
Speaker
You know, I had a hole up at um like ah guy who came. Yeah, basically a truck stop, but it wasn't a truck stop. It was just his shop. That was it. There was no truck stop for miles and miles and miles.
00:16:36
Speaker
So he came and rescued me and said, we can't get the parts to your RV. So you have to live in this pit for the next couple days. And I'm like, please tell me you have Wi-Fi so I can work.
00:16:48
Speaker
So I literally was, my RV was down in a mechanics pit. And I was living in it for a couple of days until we got parts in from who knows where.
00:17:00
Speaker
and I was just doing ah videos and social media and of course, giving my family a heart attack, but letting them know I'm alive and this is where you could find me if you don't hear from me anymore.
00:17:10
Speaker
But in the end, i got work done and then I was able to take the you know another week off and and continue my traveling. So it was definitely interesting. After that, because that was sort of in the beginning of my trip,
00:17:23
Speaker
um I kind of was like, bring it. I could handle anything at this point. And it in nature did bring it. And so I was like, wait, I was just kidding. Don't bring me any more pain, please.
00:17:33
Speaker
ah It sounds well exciting. The image ah that we have very often in in the UK is that America is big cities like New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, or those sorts things.
00:17:46
Speaker
The places that are portrayed in the television programs and the films that we see. Once you get beyond the coast, it is like you say, you can be in the middle of nowhere fairly quickly.
00:17:58
Speaker
Yeah, absolutely. And it it is like those long straight roads that cruise control was invented for. Yes. Hour after hour of just a straight road built in the 1930s that just goes on and on and on. And the big vistas, the big skies of the the like the Western states was one of the things that i always I will always remember being there and sort like the sky is just so big, yeah so much bigger than we have in the UK. The horizons are...
00:18:30
Speaker
so wide and you started to think like, I'm in the middle of nowhere.
00:18:40
Speaker
but so there's the mechanical issues that you had. You must also have sort communed with nature an awful lot. I should think you're out there on the prairies in some of these, these states. And, uh, there must've been all sorts of different wildlife that you got to see.
00:18:54
Speaker
Oh, absolutely. I mean, in some places it was like, hey, don't go outside at night, you know, just look from your window. i was like, OK, I'm just going to believe them and stay inside. But I was staying at.
00:19:06
Speaker
um So in the United States, there's this thing that many people may not even know about for ah RVers called Harvest Hosts. And it's where you can stay at ah wineries and breweries.
00:19:17
Speaker
And most of them are very small ones. Some of them are huge, but most of them are small mom and pop places. And number one, I love wine. And so that was a good experience to be able to give back to those smaller businesses and then, you know, kind of feel safe too. There might've been one or two other people and you got to, you got to share your stories, where you headed to next? Where do, where do I need to go?
00:19:40
Speaker
But many of those were in, you know, in the middle of nowhere that yet I would have never even found them if I tried to go on an airplane in a car. But because I was driving, I was like, I guess I'm going down this dirt road. This is where it's telling me I'm staying tonight.
00:19:54
Speaker
And it was just an amazing experience, again, to see wildlife and farms. And then, ta-da, there's this winery or brewery, and you're going to hang out there and stay with people and get to meet new friends and learn new things. So was it gave me it gave me a lot of gratification to just learn that. But then I got to bring wine home, too. And I'd have to worry about the airplane because I could just load it up in my ah RV.
00:20:17
Speaker
Ah, the RV must have got quite built quite a relationship with that RV. Yes, absolutely. I came home with over 50 bottles of wine just from that, ah those 14 states. And then I was able to, you know, give out every time it was somebody's birthday or a Christmas gift. I was like, all right, you're getting something from my special connection ah collection. So I think it's time for another trip because that collection is gone.

Travel Tips and Unique Experiences

00:20:44
Speaker
Would you be doing another road trip? um I don't think in my RV, but I did do another road trip. I had ah four more states, ah a few more. I think I had seven states left to visit in 2022. And so I had to go speak at a conference in, I want to say, Illinois.
00:21:05
Speaker
And so I did a ah a five-state trip via car in that so I can go to North Dakota, South Dakota, dakota um Iowa, Missouri, and then ended in Illinois where I was doing my my work conference. So that was really cool. But again, I was staying in the hotels on that one, different experience.
00:21:29
Speaker
but I didn't have as much time either. So I had a kind of, you know, pick and choose what I was going to do in each one of those States and then leave some things to say, you know what, if I have an opportunity to come back now, I've already done these two things. Let me finish off the list of, you know, top, top things to visit.
00:21:46
Speaker
Asking locals is the best thing because they will tell you. Yes. Yes. Yeah. Find yourself a local. You can trust get of Absolutely. Now, the u kind they saw that The European equivalent of a trip around 50 states of America would be perhaps visiting each state of the European Union or each county of the United Kingdom, those sorts things. that This is not something that is simply an American thing. It's just that you have 50 states in the United States and yeah there are
00:22:20
Speaker
I'm sure you're not alone as the so as someone who has visited all 50. If you're a person for lists, that is probably the sort of thing that you would put it on your bucket list to actually do.
00:22:32
Speaker
but If somebody was thinking about doing one of these, I was going to say endurance trips, but long-term trips to, to visit in different States or different countries, what sort of, would you, what would be your top three tips to make sure that the the trip was successful?
00:22:51
Speaker
um my My number one tip is just to do a lot of research ahead of time because ah just finding things on the Internet, it may be an advertisement, but it's not really what locals would say go to that.
00:23:07
Speaker
And so that we do have this wonderful little thing called the Internet that there's a lot of websites that um that you can go to like top 10 places in Montana or something like that, which ah Montana, by the way, was just an amazing experience. I was like so much land out here. Holy moly.
00:23:26
Speaker
And so many animals that you know, depending on where you grow up, you've only seen in books or you've only seen on TV. You've never seen, you know, these animals just walking around everywhere, coming up to your car thinking, okay, am I about to get crushed or are they going to be nice to me? It's like don't get out of the car.
00:23:46
Speaker
So number one tip is just do your research, spend the time ahead of time. Don't be doing it just on the plane there or on the car right there, because you may have already booked ah hotels or campsites. And now you need to, you know, move that around. Depending on the time of the year, it may not be possible to get a new, ah new, a different hotel room because everybody's going there.
00:24:10
Speaker
ah We're recording this in August right now. In August, at least in the United States is where a lot of people go somewhere and they take off time And from work. And so, you know, if I was going to go where all those people are going right now, I'm not going to have a hotel room probably. So research is the first thing.
00:24:30
Speaker
Number two is if you don't want to travel alone, you're going to have to prepare ahead even further. because not everybody's going to be able to get off of work the same time. And so you may have to delay your trip. If you do want to travel alone, then it's going to make it a little bit easier for you.
00:24:47
Speaker
But you still need to be looking out for your safety, um not just from Other humans, but again, from animals, from, you know, ah is it a rainy season? are things flooded? What kind of vehicles do I need?
00:25:00
Speaker
So that's the the two tips that I would just say is just the preparation. And then the final thing I would say is during it, just try your best to live in the moment. You know, don't worry about the fact that you didn't snap that picture. You can get to it later. You can find one online. But just trying to live in the moment versus categorizing and, and you know, recording everything. Because when I find when we're always just recording we or taking pictures, we forget to be there and enjoy it.
00:25:30
Speaker
Great advice. Great advice. And Montana is on my list of states to visit. Oh my goodness. Montana it was just amazing. i when I went to Montana the first time, um this I was at, it was a while ago. i was at a country music festival here in Florida and there was, uh, like you could put your name in to win a trip.
00:25:56
Speaker
Now it was from a cigarette company. I do not smoke, but anybody could put their, and put their name in. It was from Marlboro. And we won the trip, me and my friend won the trip. And so we got an all expense paid trip to the Marlboro Ranch in Montana, which is has nothing to do with cigarettes. It's just they bought an old town or they had property and they built it to look like an old ah ranching town.
00:26:20
Speaker
And it was just amazing. It was like, this is the coolest thing ever. So put your names in those things at festivals and and, you know, you might win a trip and it might actually come true. I will bear that in mind.
00:26:34
Speaker
Thank you very much. You know, Wendy, it has been so much fun. Really have enjoyed it. Really do appreciate your time today. Thank you very much. Yeah, you're
