Review Time! I enjoyed this movie so much, I thought it would be a good idea to do a full review episode of all of my thoughts, and here it is! Unexpectedly, loved this movie! Not the best thing I've ever seen but definitely worth a watch if you're looking for a thriller this spooky season!

00:00:19
Speaker
What up nerds, we're back with Bad Movie Debate. It's me, Jacob Babb. Unfortunately, we're not doing a regular debate episode today. We're just gonna do a review of a pretty solid new movie that just came out a couple months ago now. I'm late to seeing it, but finally got around to it, finally got to see it. um Sorry for the hiatus. A lot of... ah bad timing trying to get some episodes out and then like bad timing of having a bunch of like personal events to go to a lot of weddings and shit like that like all kind of back to back to back so
00:00:56
Speaker
You know, kind of kind of slacked a little bit on a and making the show here, but we're coming back in full force. While I was not able to do full-blown episodes and like get some stuff out, I have been working behind the scenes to get some very exciting stuff ready going forward. so starting next month at the absolute latest hopefully there will be some ah a new and fun way to experience the podcast which will be a lot of fun and I think I've got all the kinks worked out and ah
00:01:29
Speaker
we'll be able to hit the ground, run in, and hopefully not have such a long, hiatit unannounced hiatus ah going

Halloween Special Teaser

forward. So, that being said, we are ready to go for this spooky episode, and then we got another spooky episode ready to go in a couple of weeks. um If you know, you know it's Halloween time, it's October time, spooky season, so spooky movies and show time, so If you've listened to the podcast before, you already know who is going to be joining me in a couple weeks to talk about some spooky movies. It's always a good time talking to him, so just a little teaser there

Movie Review: 'Speak No Evil'

00:02:06
Speaker
if you know. you know um But yeah, so today we're going to do a review episode of the new Blue House production, Speak No Evil, which
00:02:15
Speaker
I gotta say, I really enjoyed. I thought it was, uh, it's not that it was better than I thought it was gonna be. I guess it was more unexpected than I thought, which is great because at the end of the day it's kind of, it's pretty surface-like, it's like obvious from the trailer, right? Like it's obvious like what the film is gonna be and like kind of how it's gonna play out, but there's some There's some twists and turns and there's some cool things that they do in this movie that make it worth seeing even though it's a familiar story. You know what I mean? It's like a story that's been told a million times but this felt genuine or like felt like a little more original and a little just like more fun. But like you've seen this movie before. um But I don't know why. They just did a really good job ah making it
00:03:06
Speaker
I mean, even though it's predictable, it's like there is some unexpectedness. um I mean, I don't know, I like to turn my brain off and not... try to see what's coming and not try to like speculate. I try to just experience the film as it's presented to me, regardless of what I've seen or what i've like I'm thinking. I pay attention to foreshadowing and stuff, but if you just pay attention to the foreshadowing, that's how twists can come in and sneak up on you, even if like you know some stuff may seem a little obvious down the line but once you get there and stuff. but like
00:03:40
Speaker
Yeah, that neither here or there at this point. I enjoyed this movie even though it's a tale that's been told a million times is what I'm saying, I guess, at the end of the day. um So first things first, Speak No Evil, Rotten Tomatoes, 83% certified fresh on the tomato meter, 85% on the popcorn meter. So critics think it's pretty damn good, audiences like it, and I think that's a pretty good solid ah ranking right there. Like I think that,
00:04:09
Speaker
I think that tracks. And what's interesting about that, um I also found on ah Rotten Tomatoes, the they have a ah all Blumhouse horror movies ranked based on like their tomato meter and stuff.
00:04:21
Speaker
and I think it's great because they had the like three movies already come out this year imaginary which I haven't seen speak no evil which is amazing I'm talking about right now and afraid that new AI one which I haven't seen or heard really anybody talk about so that would just kind of look stupid to me but that's fine um Yeah, so it's ah the top 100 of ah theirs based on their tomato meter, Bloomhouse's stuff based on their tomato meter. And this one actually falls at number 10 with that 83%, which is pretty damn good. Like, people really, really like it. um and it's Yeah, and I think that's a totally fair place to put it, you know what I mean?
00:05:01
Speaker
Kind of a bummer that Paranormal Activity with the ah same ranking is down at number 14. There's a lot of repeats and rankings of course. Um, Paranormal Activity like from the OG one and stuff I think is a Crazy good movie we all know how good that movie is um I feel like that deserves to be in the top 10 But you know that's not really we're not getting into all that but you know it beats out tons of good stuff ah Which is crazy creep?
00:05:33
Speaker
is fucking amazing and like it's at number 10 on there, which is wild. ah The Happy Death Day movies are lower, which are i I love those movies, all the Insidious movies, um and then you get like Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends, and the first Halloween movie is good.

'Speak No Evil' Plot Overview

00:05:50
Speaker
but It will talk more about we will actually probably talk more about those in the next episode like the remakes and remakes in general so hint hint of ah horror movies There's just a couple of weeks, so I'll ignore that, but yeah There's some good stuff on here that like it just didn't do great purge like purges fine, but
00:06:08
Speaker
point is this movie is up at number 10 right now on all the bloomhouse tomato meter scores and i think that's fine the only ones i've seen that it's getting beat by um there's obviously it's number 10 so there's you know others there's more before that number one is get out duh of course number two is megan haven't seen but want to see i did not realize this movie uh did so well i knew people liked it i didn't do know that it had like such a good critic score and like i'm I'm a firm believer that if critics love it, you watch it. If audiences love it, you watch it. If they both love it, you have to watch it, so I'm gonna have to check this one out finally. ah Cam, haven't seen it. Also 93%, just like Megan, which is insane. um Hush, Mike Flanagan, if you've heard the pod before, you know how much I love Mike Flanagan, he is.
00:06:57
Speaker
Absolutely amazing, he's probably one of the best horror ah filmmakers out right now. All of his TV shows slap, all of his movies slap, ah but Hush specifically is crazy. That's such a good movie. If you if if you don't speak speak no evil, that's fine, watch Hush. Watch both, but watch Hush, I swear. ah You won't regret it. And then something called Sweetheart, The New Invisible Man, ah Nanny, ah The Vigil, and Totally Killer are the nine before.
00:07:24
Speaker
but speak no evil so some of those i absolutely love some of them i've never watched or never even heard of but that's neither here nor there um so yeah let's get into speak no evil so this movie obviously stars James McAvoy that is like they led with him on all the posters and everything and i think rightfully so because he is really really good in this it's a and see that I don't think I've seen a whole lot of movies with him in his like actual ah like UK accent before and this one he it's something he's it was like not it like he was like obviously not James McAvoy you know what I mean like you know there's some actors you see you like like Samuel Jackson sometimes it's like that's Samuel Jackson no matter who he's playing and stuff like even though he's a good actor it's like can't help would be like yeah that movie with Samuel Jackson then he'd like never want to say his character's name I want to say Patty talking about James McAvoy because like
00:08:20
Speaker
he played patty very very well and patty is uh... who patty something uh... digress though uh... but uh... so the logline for this movie as is on imdb a family is invited to spend a whole weekend in in a lonely home in the countryside but as the weekend progresses they realize that a dark side lies within the family who invited them Yeah, that's a exactly what happens.

In-depth Plot and Theme Analysis

00:08:43
Speaker
um now We're going to get into it. So ah if you have not seen the movie and you don't want to be spoiled, and go ahead and stop right here and come back after after you listen to it. Or you watch it rather than come back and listen. ah Massive spoilers ahead as I kind of talk about my opinions about certain moments and like certain things and everything. but ah So that's your final warning.
00:09:03
Speaker
Final warning. um So, James McAvoy plays ah the family who invites and stuff. He's ah Patty, his wife is, I hope I'm saying this right, Eiling, friend, Choisei, I do not know, I'm really bad with the names in general, so, ah but that's Kira. And then their son, ah played by Dan Hugh, named Ant.
00:09:29
Speaker
Yes, Ant, like short for like Anthony, I'm assuming, but it just says Ant. And then you you have Mackenzie Davis playing Louise Dalton, Scott McNary playing Ben Dalton, and Alex West Loeffler playing Agnes Dalton. That's the family who is invited to come. So they're the victims, as they were. um and Everything from here on, I'm gonna just like try to refer to them just by their character names and stuff, but that's long and short of it.
00:09:58
Speaker
And as I'm going over this IMDb page about like the character's name, so you have the Dalton family, right? Patty, Kira, and Ant, even on the IMDb page, don't have last names listed. And neither do a couple of other people who we do come across. ah One guy is kind of a joke character, so it doesn't matter, but like Mike, he's a character that comes up in the story, no last names ever given for him. ah And what's really interesting is, ah The actually is really interesting thing in the movie itself is they never, I'm thinking about it now as I read this name of ah actors and their characters off, they never talk about what their last names are. I don't think they ever mention it. The Dalton family never ask.
00:10:45
Speaker
They obviously ask like what they do for a living and stuff. Patty says he's a doctor and everything. And so Kiria doesn't need to just need to work and Ant is a child. so you know um But it's just it's fascinating to me that
00:11:01
Speaker
It never comes up and the Dalton's don't seem to notice that it's never freely given or they never ask even. um I just I don't know. I just think that's a very interesting little like subtle detail of like the as a reminder of like you don't really know who these people are kind of a thing and I think that.
00:11:20
Speaker
I think that plays in it in its favor for sure. I already talked about on ah my quick review that I posted online on social media that like I do like this movie so you know maybe I'm just trying to defend it because I like it but hey I haven't heard anybody else say anything super bad about it so I don't think I'm crazy for liking it. Yeah so they go to like a little Italian villa vacation they meet ah Patty and all of them, they invite them, they're all from the UK, the ah Dalton family.
00:11:51
Speaker
has been living in London for a little bit, jobs are being lost, trying to figure out what's going on and stuff. Patty invites them out to their country home, just like the log line says, yada, yada, yada. um And they get there. An important thing is, so ah Patty's a doctor, right? Says he's a doctor. And ah when Ant is first introduced, they say that he has trouble communicating because he has a he was born with a... some fancy medical term of saying he was born with a little short tongue so he can't really speak ah even though he tries to communicate so that's just off the bat kind of fucking weird um spoiler alert uh i think we can all guess what happened with that it's literally in the trailer uh you can see like he tells somebody what happened um through uh mime the wonderful art form of mime um
00:12:41
Speaker
but uh so they go they they say fuck it we're gonna go like work is work is not working um so we're gonna go So they go and immediately, almost immediately, I guess it's like a few weeks later, I guess you can kind of assume, like go on another vacation, like a long weekend in vacation to the middle of fucking nowhere countryside, ah fucking England. And things just immediately off the bat are super uncomfortable. Louise and Patty had a long conversation one night when they were in Italy about how she is a vegetarian, not for like a specific like allergy to meat products and stuff. um the she she guess She's like a pescatarian. um
00:13:17
Speaker
immediately as soon as they get there they're like hey we live on a farm we killed our favorite goose and we fried up the goose uh and you get the best part of the meat louise like here you go she's cordial she eats it she chews on it they turn around she spits it out and everything just to kind of keep the peace but like that's already like uh that's not really socially the best thing to do that's kind of crossing a boundary and there's a lot of stuff like that there's a lot of uh social boundary crossing that ah Patty and Kira are all about um in a way that makes this movie almost uncomfortable from the moment that Patty and Kira show up, which is a reason why I like this. I was never fully comfortable with what was happening.
00:14:05
Speaker
at any moment in the movie the first like you know the first act is all right you know there's not a lot of uncomfortableness there um there's a couple things that on vacation that they're like not super comfortable with but they're like yeah you know whatever i will probably never see him again not a big deal um and it's nothing super out of the ordinary and they have like a good time with them once they get to their home though it just gets even worse and so it's like they're having conversations and like ah patty and kira and the Dalton parents go on like just a parents only like really nice dinner where we're introduced to mike who
00:14:42
Speaker
Amazing chef has a really tiny little restaurant that you can't find on Yelp they specifically make a joke about how yo you won't find this on Yelp and ah Beautiful dinner or whatever and then they pretty much like borderline Say that like hey if you guys want to swing with us we will we would be down for that so all kinds of stuff. You find out some marital issues are going on ah between the Daltons and stuff and it's actually a really great shot. They're having this argument and you can see ah Patty in the window of the ah ah their bedroom door just like eavesdropping so easily, likes just so he can have that information loaded to like drop later on Ben when they're alone and they can talk.
00:15:27
Speaker
about it and like just kind of get everybody they're just like really good at making everybody uncomfortable in like really crazy ways and there's one specific event that makes them want to leave ah and like they were they were about to leave before shit really hit the fan and but then they had to go back because Agnes has like an anxiety issue and she's like obsessed with this stuffed rabbit and they leave it, they go back, they get caught leaving yada yada yada yada yada yada yada without going into every single fucking beat of this movie and stuff but the main thing is and then shit starts to really hit the fan again seems pretty obvious but like the plan is for Patty and Kira to murder the Daltons
00:16:12
Speaker
and the murder the family and take their money and stuff, and that's how they make money. He's not a fucking doctor. Of course he's not a doctor, right? um But the thing that I found interesting is, again, it seems like it's pretty obvious, like, without guessing it, like, obviously, Ant got his ah tongue cut out by Patty, so he could not tell anybody about the abuse in the house and stuff, right?
00:16:42
Speaker
But Ant figures out a way to very, sneak he's a smart little little dude, honestly. um he gets He finds out a way to show Agnes this like underground crawl space ah that's on the property that has suitcases and luggage and photos of the of Patty and Kira on family trips with a bunch of different other families and stuff that it eventually revealed and like in that moment it reveals that Ant is not actually their son. He is not their fucking kid.
00:17:21
Speaker
It's not he's a but that's not that Patty and Kira are abusive to Anne, they cut out his tongue so nobody could tell him. They killed his family. with Him and his parents went and stayed with them. They killed his parents and then like unofficially adopted him and cut out his tongue so that they could have a perfect little family or the ideal like what looks like to be the perfect little family.
00:17:46
Speaker
and And the plan it is to do that with the Daltons, kill Luis and Ben, and then make Agnes their new child, ah just like they did with Ant. And she's able to relay that to the Daltons, and then like shit hits the fan from there in a really great ah a really great way. And you know it ends with everybody getting, everybody's fine by the end of it and stuff. And so they they win, and it's great. um
00:18:18
Speaker
But the journey to, so that seems like a pretty obvious end result, a pretty obvious story that's been told a million times before that we're getting, right? Like it sounds like, like, I know you've seen this movie before.
00:18:38
Speaker
I've seen this movie before. This is a pretty classic horror trope. People meet some strangers, immediately decide to trust them, go to a remote location, and they try to kill them, take their money, and like kidnna like like do all this fucked up shit, right? like Been there, done that, right? And that's fine.
00:19:08
Speaker
But what's great about this movie is even though it's a story you've already seen, the way it's played out is pretty fucking awesome because usually, you know, in horror, there's obviously like the standard thing of like people are so oblivious and people are so stupid. And Louise is out there.
00:19:29
Speaker
trying to fucking get out almost as soon as they get there she's like I gotta go we gotta go I do not like it here they are making me socially uncomfortable so much that I want to fucking leave and I don't want to even be here right now and stuff and been like you know He's like, no, like it's just a couple

Character Decisions and Horror Dynamics

00:19:47
Speaker
days. like Let's not be rude and then we'll just ghost him. We'll just never talk to him again. It'll be fine and stuff. and like and i think and like Agnes is down for whatever. She doesn't really give a shit. She's a 12-year-old child. so Until Aunt lets her know what's going on and then she's like, we got to fucking go. Which is why I really like this movie. As soon as Agnes is able to relay to um
00:20:09
Speaker
Louise and Ben which she does a really really creative move to get alone with her parents and uh I thought was a genius uh a genius thing for her to do so kudos to her for sure they um immediately formally a plan that they have that like this is how we're gonna get out of here and this is what we're gonna do and there'll be none the wiser Patti and Kira obviously like they they could feel the writing They could see the writing on the wall, they could feel that they were about to lose them and stuff, so once shit hits the fan, shit it never ever stops.
00:20:44
Speaker
And that's why I think this is a movie that deserves to be like where it is in the Blumhouse productions of like although that top 100 list I was talking about. ah I think it deserves to be at a 10 for Blumhouse. This is probably my most ah liked Blumhouse production in a while. Again, I really liked Insidious. Paranormal Activity is great. um There's other Hush is great and everything like that. But like.
00:21:07
Speaker
But this movie was just Unexpectedly better than I thought um I'm like not trying to shit on bloom house too much like they just put out so much that like not everything is gonna like Hit the way that you would want you know so for them to be able to ah like make a movie that completely made me uncomfortable from beginning to end ah in a way that was like not just like obviously like the thriller horror stuff that like really comes up at the end is really awesome and like obviously I'm uncomfortable watching like that in a good way like I love these kind of movies you know like this is a good movie I'm saying for sure
00:21:54
Speaker
But the way that they're able to do that, beginning with the socially uncomfortable and like social awkward like faux pas and ah crossing of boundaries and like stuff like that, I think makes the, it sets the tone of the movie in the right way from the very beginning that does not ever let up. And then when shit goes off, it never stops.
00:22:23
Speaker
And I really appreciate that. I feel like a lot of Blumhouse productions in the past have been like, okay, now it's scary, and now it's just a movie, and now it's scary, and now it's just a movie, and even the scary parts aren't even that great. But like when you get completely entranced and and ah like ah and saturated with ah nothing but uncomfortable conversations the entire time, and like,
00:22:49
Speaker
moments that are like okay everything's like okay they're all on the same page now and like okay it could just be a normal weekend and stuff like it could just be a chill weekend like whatever and then it just like then somebody like patty or kira like crosses another fucking line or says something after or like louise even like uh like will cross a line to like argue back with patty in certain scenes and stuff and like That builds the tension, and then Ben just over there really fucking uncomfortable the entire time. He makes some good decisions along the way, for sure. Like, he I'm not saying he was, like, a worthless dad character. Like, it can happen sometimes in these kind of movies. Um... It just, um... Just the tone of it. Just, like, again, I know I keep saying it, but, like, just the tone that they were able to start from the beginning and keep until the end.

Tension and Atmosphere in Horror

00:23:35
Speaker
was awesome because it just never let up no matter what. like From the moment that um it starts getting socially uncomfortable, it just gets more and more and more uncomfortable until it gets to that place of horror and thriller and they're trying to kill us and take our fucking kid. like We know that and we gotta get the fuck out of here and now, you know and then it's ABC, XYZ, exactly what you expect, how they get out of there and stuff. like some pretty dope um action made by both adult parents um agnes does a good job with stuff and does a good job like they all like like i don't think and let's say one this thing it's like i'm not they thinking that like i don't think that they were like being too smart about it they did everything that you should do in a situation like this which is which is scary because it's like well they're doing everything they're supposed to do but at the end of the day this is a horror thriller movie like are they gonna fucking make it like and stuff like this problem with a lot of these movies like there what is it that geico commercial with the uh that they play during halloween sometimes where it's like oh yeah the chainsaw the guy with the chainsaw is after us and there's a perfectly
00:24:46
Speaker
There's a fueled up, already ready to go, like keys are in the ignition, car, should we get in that and drive away? And they're like, no, we should hide in the shed with the other chainsaws and stuff. like And it's like, oh yeah, choose Geico, the obvious easy choice, like don't be like these people and stuff. And it's like, they can make that joke in a commercial, in a 30 second fucking commercial, because that's how horror movies have been for a long time. Everybody's always like, why would you do that? Why are you doing that?
00:25:10
Speaker
And this one, I was like, yes, that's a good idea. Like, yes, that's what you should do. Obviously, I think they should have just left outright. But again, as a third party watching this story, knowing it's going to get fucked up at some situation like.
00:25:25
Speaker
I can understand when they come when they do get out and then they come back, how they get reeled back in into being like, it's just another couple of days and stuff like that, it'll be fine. um like So i i I don't think they made anybody made any really bad decisions, La Dalton family and aunt, I don't think any of them ever made any bad decisions that like gives them the, like like ah how do you put it? like like does this character like deserve to die quote-unquote because they like made a bad decision and stuff like none of them made bad decisions they did everything they possibly could have done to get out of the situation and thankfully they do in a way that's very satisfying and um i think that's why i liked it i left the theater
00:26:12
Speaker
glad that they were able to make it out of it, but still feeling a bit uncomfortable with it, which is something that I did not expect from a story that's been told over and over and over again, like I've been saying this whole time. So I don't know. I don't really have much more else to say about it. I don't think like it was just It was just a good watch. you know It's a popcorn movie. you know what i mean like I don't think there's like a deeper message here you know or anything like that. If there is, you know someone let me know if they found something deeper in it. I just felt like it was a solid popcorn flick. like It's not saying anything about anything. you know like
00:26:57
Speaker
You know, is it saying something about the marriage? Cause the Dalton, Luis, and ah Ben have marriage issues and they need to trust and communicate better? Maybe, sure. Like, okay, yeah, I can see that. Like, but like, I don't think it needs to go that deep with this one. And that's totally fine. It's a fucking horror thriller movie, dude. Like a horror mystery thriller kind of thing. Like it doesn't always have to be that deep. And I don't think this necessarily is.
00:27:24
Speaker
and I'm totally okay with that. That's kind of what I want sometimes in my and my spooky movies. You know, obviously the number one list on this Blumhouse Horror Movies Ranked by Tomato Meter list is Get Out, and that has a lot to say about a lot of things, and it deserves to be at number one because of that. This popcorn flick being at number 10, totally feel that. Totally agree with that. it was It's just so much fucking fun. Same with Hush. Hush is like number four.
00:27:49
Speaker
not a lot going on there like in terms of like a larger message or anything like that it's just a fucking good creepy-ass fucking movie to watch so you watch it you enjoy the ride and there's like a twists and turns and stuff that you don't expect yeah that's probably honestly that's probably why I like this movie so much it kind of reminds me of hush hush is a movie about someone who is trying to not let a serial killer get into their house and kill them but there's a twist that the ah woman, the main character, is completely deaf. Like not just a little, like completely deaf. So she can't hear anything and that adds an extra layer. So it's a story that you've seen a million times before that adds a little extra something. This one, what they added is they added the tone of the movie from the very beginning. They started the movie with an uncomfortable tone and crossing of boundaries and
00:28:49
Speaker
making you feel uncomfortable as you watch it from the very beginning and keep going up and up and up and up and up and that until the very end. Which is a very Dan O'Bannon alien thing to do. You keep rising the tension every single fucking scene you can. Obviously there's some breaths in there. There's breaths in alien and stuff but like that's That's how you do a thriller. That's how you do a competent thriller. I'm a firm believer in Daniel Bannon's storytelling and like screenwriting opinion or like theory or mechanism, I guess, of ah rising the tension slowly but surely, and then it just keeps going and going until the climax of the movie. I think this movie did a very good job of that and
00:29:45
Speaker
I

Final Thoughts and Rating

00:29:46
Speaker
loved it. I'm going to give it, I'm going to give it a four out of five. It's not one of the best movies I've ever seen, but I was not expecting it to hit me in that way. You know, I thought it was going to be, you know, I can't think of another specific example, but I thought it was going to be a super fucking basic story. I mean, again, the log line sounds like a fucking such a basic story, but like the way they go about it from the beginning is amazing. So for me, four out of five.

Again, got some more ah got some more ah Halloween stuff coming up and some some things that will hopefully make the hiatus, the unexpected hiatus worth it that I've been working on behind the scenes. um If you've made it this far, I'll go ahead and say it.

I've been working on a video episode, so hopefully in the very near future, as in November, there will be a video component to this podcast, very excited about it. I think I've worked out all the kinks in that regard and stuff, and ah got a fun one planned um with a ah regular on the show to ah to debut that. so Look out for that in November, and ah in the meantime, everybody enjoy Spooky Season. And ah watch watch this movie, watch Hush, watch any scary movie you like, whether it's good, deep, or bad, whatever, it doesn't matter. Just watch watch some horror this month, y'all.
