Introduction and Initial Thoughts

um We interrupt your regularly scheduled programming to bring you some breaking news. There's been reports all over the area of something crazy going on. Something big. People's homes, their minds even, are being taken over by something called... What is it they're calling it? They're calling it Bad Movie Debate!
00:00:19
Speaker
What up, nerds? It's me, Jacob Babb from Bad Movie Debate, here to do another review episode because I was finally able to go see Heart Eyes. I wanted to see it sooner, but, you know, shit happens.
00:00:31
Speaker
No big deal. It is what it is. I finally got to go see it, and I absolutely loved it. I'm just gonna go ahead say it's probably my favorite ah rom-com horror of all time.
00:00:43
Speaker
That might be because... I don't know if there is any more of those out there, but if there is, I can't imagine they're as good as this one. Um, I mean, as always, first and foremost, cinematography, editing, all that stuff. Absolutely incredible.

Praise for Direction and Genre Blend

00:00:58
Speaker
Um, directing was incredible. Josh Rubin. I absolutely love Josh Rubin college humor stuff. Dropout stuff. Uh, werewolves within is an incredible movie. I think that's the name of that movie. I hope, but I hope that's right. But, um,
00:01:12
Speaker
Loved that movie. He directed that one. This one is better, I have to say. It's more interesting, but this movie that movie is also very, very good. um I'm really excited to see Josh Rubin do more horror-like comedy kind of things.
00:01:29
Speaker
um But the reason this one is so good and is better than that one is because it's something that might not have ever been done before. It's a rom-com movie.
00:01:40
Speaker
horror like the romance comedy aspects of the movie play and work really really well together in a way that like if you just if you took out the slasher you took out like the hard eyes of it all um it would just be a pretty good rom-com i don't know like what the you know scenario like what the main plot line like through line would be but it doesn't matter like because The two leads did a really fantastic, an absolutely fantastic job ah balancing the rom-com of everything and the ah the like slasher horror of everything. And I think it was just like just so incredibly well done from top to bottom.
00:02:24
Speaker
um And you know I love Josh Rubin very much. Dropout content, college humor content. like I love everything he's done. um But I just think this movie really works well. And, you know, obviously a lot of that goes to the writers and the actors and stuff. But Josh Rubin in the director's seat is something I want to see more of.
00:02:43
Speaker
And I'm really excited to see more of in the future.

Personal Tastes and Standout Elements

00:02:45
Speaker
So I'm very glad that this one did super, super well. And I hope he's able to, like... you know, pick up more work. Honestly, there there's room for a sequel here. I don't know exactly how I'll let them figure that out, but like there's room for a sequel here, I think, and it would be pretty cool um if he was able to do that. um But so again, I'm not the biggest rom-com person. I love rom-coms. Freeing Sarah Marshall the best one ever. um It's the only one that is really like made for men at the end of the day.
00:03:11
Speaker
um So maybe I am a little bit biased, but I love How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, like all of those like classic ones too. um So don't get me wrong. I'm well-versed. My wife, Austin, That's her favorite kind of thing. So we watch a bunch of them.
00:03:22
Speaker
um But I'm obviously a huge horror fan as people who, you know, listen to the show now. And i think that's what sets this apart is like they could have gone to rom-com. They could have gone to like slasher horror.
00:03:35
Speaker
And it could have, like, leaned to one way or the other. And I think this one genuinely actually nailed it and knocked it out of the fucking park. And they just they just... It just, like, the balance of everything was so perfect.
00:03:48
Speaker
Like, the little meet-cute in the coffee shop is perfect rom-com thing. And, like, it actually reminded me... So this is an old college humor bit. The... I think it's the seven-way meet-cute. It kind of had like that energy in there. And I can't remember if Josh Rubin is in that one. I know Allie Beardsley's in that one and Katie Maravich.
00:04:07
Speaker
Um... Uh... maybe Emily Axford and Brian Murphy. I'm not 100% sure, but this was, like, way, this way back College Humor stuff. um But it's ah literally seven people doing a seven-way meet-cute, and, like, it kind of had that energy there, so I don't know if that was, like, a little homage to that, but if it was, it was awesome.
00:04:27
Speaker
Either way, and absolutely they absolutely nailed the meet-cute thing and everything, was and then, like, the classic, like, spoilers abound of course um like the classic like oh like she kind of embarrasses herself in front of ah in front of the cute guy at the coffee shop turns out he's coming in because she works as like at like a jewelry place doing marketing and like she's getting yelled at by her boss because her campaign was like pretty like it's funny i don't want to ruin that because it's pretty funny like yeah this is a really bad idea considering like the world they live in um and then of course he's the guy who you know is in town to like who's a freelancer to like come like rectify that situation and everything so
00:05:12
Speaker
like That's just classic rom-com setup and everything.

Humor and Tone Setting

00:05:16
Speaker
um But now, coming back to the very beginning of the movie, the opening, the opening scene of this movie...
00:05:23
Speaker
is so fucking funny while introducing the just like how off the wall crazy ah slasher it's gonna get. Like it it's bloody, it's gory, but like in a way that works for this kind of a movie, you know what I mean? Like I think it makes sense for it to do the, to do like as much gore as it did. Cause it wasn't like, it's not like, like it's tasteful as tasteful as gore can be, but it's not like gratuitous. That's what I'm trying to say. It's not a gratuitous gore. That's just like over the top for the sake of it. Like kind of a thing, you know what I mean?
00:05:59
Speaker
So I think it's totally fine in that regard, but, that opening scene with that fucking song playing i don't want to ruin it because it's just so fucking funny that is pure like i'm sure like you know the writers and josh rubin like collab real hard on that because that just has like the the comedy that i would expect from josh rubin being the director of this movie in a way that was just like Like, I was cackling in the theater. Thankfully, I was in there by myself, so I was able to, like, fully cackle and, like, comment, like, out loud and everything, so that was nice.
00:06:35
Speaker
It's not great that I was in there by myself, but, again, I'm, like, a month behind on watching it, so... And it's done very well, so good. and I'm getting you some late... I'm getting you all... This may be some late ah late attention, ah late ah ticket sales.
00:06:48
Speaker
um But I digress. The opening scene is incredible, um and... the perfect way where it balances. it sets the tone early for this is rom-com.
00:07:04
Speaker
and well, it's I guess it's more like comedy, like a horror comedy. And then we meet our two mains, our two leads, and they bring in the ROM. And so it just blends and meshes so well that you're going to be like rooting for the couple to end up together.
00:07:22
Speaker
ah Spoiler alert, they do. um and But also, you know, surviving the slasher of it all and everything. And I think it's just like it's just so well written and paced so perfectly. It's like an hour and a half long, plus or minus, like well plus, um and they use every bit of it exactly how they need to. They don't ever, it never drags, there's nothing weird.
00:07:49
Speaker
And again, major spoiler alerts, once we get to the end and it's like we realize we find out it's a scream type situation.

Plot Depth with Multiple Killers

00:07:57
Speaker
Hard Eyes isn't one person, it's three people that are doing this and stuff, which makes sense because of like, you know, he, he, Hard Eyes has like, think it's two, it's like a bunch of different people over different, like, super, like, popular, or popular, popular populated cities um for the past couple of years, and now it's in, now he's come to Seattle, and
00:08:27
Speaker
it just makes so much sense. Like once you look back at stuff, like again, spoiler alert, like the, uh, the two, so they call themselves the throuple and started and it was one of the lead detectives on the case in Seattle and the it guy at the Seattle, uh, the Seattle police department. And,
00:08:47
Speaker
than just some guy um who, when they first killed, they killed that guy in a big scene that was crazy and genuinely had me, like, kind of upset, which I'll talk about in a second. um But it was just...
00:09:01
Speaker
It was just very funny, like the kind of like, not like spoof, but like, I would say like homage to like Scream, the like multi, multi killer, masked killer kind of a thing.
00:09:13
Speaker
And it really worked for this movie because up until we learned that that's the case, I was kind of like, how do, does Hard Eyes kill all of these people? Like, how can he be everywhere at once?
00:09:25
Speaker
And, um and all of that, but, It ties up in the end in a way that makes sense. um But so the third guy, the like, like the addition to the throuple, like the third person in the throuple, which I mean, I guess there's not supposed to be any third.
00:09:39
Speaker
It's supposed to be an equal thing and stuff. But I mean, they're bad guys and they straight up say like, oh, I was just a super fan. Like, yeah, we brought him in, you know, can make things easier and stuff. So they weren't doing the throuple thing correctly and ah as far as I know. But regardless, I digress.

Valentine's Day Event Scene

00:09:55
Speaker
um This scene where they... It's like a big, um... Valentine's Day, um... Drive-in movie theater thing. And, um... and Movies in the park, but like a drive-in... Like, kind of a situation. And, um...
00:10:11
Speaker
They bring him there and there's a bunch of couples and like they're, he's dead set on killing them too. And the entire time it's so funny because they're like bitching and moaning. Like we are not together. We are not a couple. They kind of like do not like each other because like she calls, like she lays it out and stuff. Like he's trying to like, you know, be like, Oh, let's go to dinner and work on this project. It's a really fancy place. And she like shuts it down and then they get wrapped into this and stuff. So like, uh, but anyway, so they're, they go there And he starts killing a bunch of people. And that scene that scene was pretty intense. And, like, it was scary. Like, it was genuinely scary. Like, the people screaming and, like, running from, like like, a, like, mass murder situation and stuff. And, like, obviously that's super relevant in our country and stuff. And so, like, and I feel like it's been a while um since we've seen that kind of a killing, like, scene in a movie. But, like, I don't, know, I don't think it was, like, overdone or, like,
00:11:11
Speaker
I don't really know what I'm trying to say, I guess, but like, I don't think it was too crazy. I think it will like did it just right. um So I absolutely loved it and I thought it was great and it was

Success as a Rom-Com Horror

00:11:21
Speaker
genuinely scary. um But the main thing about this movie is they the why it's such a good rom-com horror movie the best one ever um is because not only is it balanced and like there's enough time for rom enough time for calm enough time for horror it also just does a really fantastic job like tying all those things together in scenes where they maybe not maybe normally wouldn't be tied together like because like
00:11:54
Speaker
There's a scene where he like tackles her because she's about to get hit by a car. She's running in the street, not paying attention because you're running away from the killer. And he like grabs her and they're laying there and they're kind of like a classic rom-com thing where he's on top of her on the ground.
00:12:09
Speaker
And they're kind of like, ooh, being a little cute and stuff. And the killer starts coming out and they're like, we are not a fucking couple. We are not together. It's that classic, like one of those classic rom-com scenarios where it's like they...
00:12:24
Speaker
they He tried. She said no. and But then they keep getting stuck together and put together. And like she's denying her feelings because she's not ready for love because she just got out of a long term relationship and she has issues with commitment.
00:12:39
Speaker
And like instead of like it's a combination of like his tenacity to like keep going after her. ah like in Like how to lose a guy in 10 days, which is referenced, so maybe there's something there.
00:12:50
Speaker
um It's like a combination of like how to lose a guy in 10 days, tenacity, like she's pushing him away, but he's still going for it ah kind of a thing. But also they're be literally being forced to be stuck together and admit that they care about each other because they are being hunted by a slasher, a group, like three people as well.
00:13:10
Speaker
heart eyes and stuff and I just think you can't really ask for much more in what is marketed as a rom-com uh a rom-com horror movie they just absolutely nailed it out of the park and I genuinely can't think of one thing that's bad about it so I'm this pretty short review because I usually there's some stuff I can nitpick about these kind of things but I I'm not going to nitpick anything about this movie I absolutely loved it um 4.5 out of 5 stars. like Like, I don't think it's the perfect... It's not perfect. There's some issues with it, I'm sure. Someone can let me know if they thought anything was... a Didn't make sense one way or another, but
00:13:51
Speaker
I think all their loose ends, they tied up perfectly fine. And they end up together. And she's the one that proposes to him after a year and stuff. And ah and everything. And you know they ride off into the sunset, as it were. And the Slashers, the Hard Eyes killer, is taken down.
00:14:09
Speaker
And they all live happily ever after. And that's exactly what you want in a rom-com. And it works really well for a Slasher movie. And you could...

Final Recommendation

00:14:18
Speaker
make another one if you wanted because you just get copycats they like the third guy in the threat bowl they're like oh he was just a super fan of us and like like tracked and like tracked like was able to figure out who we were like tracked us down and stuff and like we just added them into it so like we can do that again like so easily um i don't know point is i want to see everybody involved with this movie doing more stuff specifically josh rubin again huge dropout and college humor fan um
00:14:46
Speaker
Yeah, no notes. 4.5 out of 5. Follow on Instagram and ah TikTok, YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, anywhere you get your podcasts, as always. I mean, if you're listening, you know that. But follow on the social media stuff. I post stuff there.
00:14:59
Speaker
um Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely love this movie. um Go see it in theaters if you can if you can. Or as soon as you can rent it, rent it. Because that this deserves all the attention it's getting.
00:15:12
Speaker
And more.
