Well, hello and welcome to the latest episode of the Purple Door podcast of Friends rewatch pod. Today we are reviewing season one, episode seven, the one with the blackout. And I'm one of your hosts, Alistair, alongside my good friend, Deanne. Hello, Deanne. Hello, Al. How's it going today? We are wonderful. We're both enjoying this lovely weather and we've both been outdoors a whole bunch, which is just awesome. Yes, it's great.
00:00:34
Speaker
And i'm I'm just so thankful for just a little bit of warm here in the midst of winter. So yeah yeah yeah, it's been very cold in the mornings and the evenings, but today the sun was out. I was at the the dog park with the dogs an hour or two and you were out having a wonderful time with your son and that's just just one of them just one that went with you. right Just one, just my younger son and I went to the theme park and we had a a good old time riding roller coasters and just spending some time together and outside. I tried out all of the, you know, young hip language to see how much I could just upset my 11 year old. Everything was, you know, busing and and ah my aura was 100. Just all the great things. I love it. yeah that's our That's what we should be doing.
00:01:29
Speaker
Now it's a very exciting time here at the Purple Door podcast because both Deanna and I have a box of friend cereal that we'll probably be munching on ah during a bit of the show. I've not tried mine yet at all.
00:01:44
Speaker
I haven't either. I just opened it up, and I'm not going to munch. I brought milk. Now, I know we have talked about milk in the past as an adult, yeah and i I shared with you that I don't really drink milk in a glass, but I definitely do put it in my cereal.
00:02:02
Speaker
so yeah I'm going to try that today, tonight. you should I posted a picture of the box of cereal on Instagram earlier, I'll need to do it on Facebook and stuff. Just to see, what I was hoping somebody else would say, yeah, I bought it too and it's really good or it's terrible. but I can't wait. It definitely has a smell. It has a smell, a pretty strong one.
00:02:27
Speaker
It does. That's that is a strong set. So Kate asked before we recorded if she could try something. I said she could not because we had to open it on air. There you go. Okay. but So I i just, I just say, I just poured milk on mine. So I'm going to let it get a little soggy before I try mine over here. All right. Well, I'll try mine first. Then you try yours. You go right ahead. All right.
00:02:53
Speaker
I'm sure this makes for some great sound on my podcast. ASMR, ASMR. That's right. I don't have my nails to click them on my microphone. That's right, you can do that too. You know, it's an unusual taste. It's not terrible. It's not that bad.
00:03:15
Speaker
Okay, so I'm going to try some dry just and and crunch in the microphone. Ready? Yeah, it is a vanilla bean latte flavored, apparently. Oh, yeah. Yeah. I kind of like that. The smell was a little off putting for me.
00:03:31
Speaker
I would agree, it didn't smell wonderful, but that's a nice little snack. We'll have to... How fun. There we go. We can endorse the friend's cereal. There we go. Ben wants to sponsor us. Who actually makes this? Let's see, General Mills, perhaps? I don't know. Whoever makes it, should get in touch and write us a big check, I think. We are endorsing the cereal.
00:03:54
Speaker
So we'll move on. Let's see. Like I said, it is the one with the blackout. So this is another one that for me is a kind of pinnacle of season one. Like this is one that people know. Oh, we've got some serial information. It is General Mills. It is General Mills, which I think we discussed a week or two ago. We sure did. Rock and Goldwinkle, right? Yes. Uh-huh. That's right. Full circle. It's all connected. It's all connected. Look at us.
00:04:22
Speaker
I love it. Well, this one, the one with the blackout to me is a ah kind of iconic episode. And I'm not spoiling anything at this point, but when interviewed several of the cast, I believe that this was one of their favorite episodes to film. So they really enjoyed it. But first, of course, let's play a little bamboozled. I have, I think, six questions for you if we don't duplicate any. OK. Why don't I go first? I'll fire a question.
00:04:51
Speaker
All right. Go away first. All righty. All right. In the opening scene, what is the song that Phoebe going to play all about? About? She says that the song is about something. Life. Yes. What life is really all about. Exactly. Well done. What life is really all about then. This is brilliant. All right. One nothing to DM. Yes. Okay. So.
00:05:21
Speaker
It's a numbers one. I knew it. Yeah. Okay. In the ATM vestibule. Yes. How many times do the lights flicker before they go out and the generator kicks on? That's a great question. I have no idea. So I'm going, I'm going to guess three. You are correct. Total guess. I didn't notice that at all.
00:05:47
Speaker
that
00:05:50
Speaker
OK, no, that's and you'll see why I'm freaking out right now. But I'm looking forward to why soon. Yes. Well, speaking of the ATM vestibule, what's the name of the bank where the vestibule is? Oh, I know that. It's Emerson Bank. You are two for two. Look at you go. Yes. All right. What is Chandler's account number?
00:06:19
Speaker
At the bank. And that, Deanne, is the question that my wife said you were guaranteed to ask. That's the one. So if I flick through my pages of notes, at the very end, she made me write down 714-3457. Yes! She said there's no reason... I told you she knows me!
00:06:43
Speaker
That's hilarious. i Yes. she and She was absolutely certain you would ask what his account number was. Yes. I love it. All right. So let's see how long has Chandler not talked to Jill Gudica before he smiles and creeps her out. He says in his monologue, it's been X amount of minutes. Oh no.
00:07:08
Speaker
Hmm, I don't know. I have no clue. I'm gonna say three. Fourteen. for Oh, he's so creepy. How long did he smile? Right. Okay, how many times does Monica say hi to Paulo?
00:07:31
Speaker
Oh, I did not get that. Well, I don't want to say three, so we'll go with four. No, it's three. I couldn't do the same number twice. Yeah, because she says hi to him whenever he says hi to her and then hi whenever he says it to Phoebe and then hi again whenever he says it to Ross. That's fantastic. I didn't catch that at all.
00:07:58
Speaker
Brilliant. All right. We're back in the vestibule and again in Chandler's in a monologue if Chan if Jill Excuse me offers you what in addition to gum you should take it In addition to them because she offers him gum and he's right and then here. Yeah. Mm-hmm It's a tough one it is a tough one uh it's funny this is one of those ones for no reason at all i just remembered yeah i have no idea he says if she offers you a mangled animal carcass oh that's right right
00:08:48
Speaker
That was so funny. That was the thing about this episode is that there were a lot of parts that I actually laughed out loud at. And that was one of them, because it was like, what a ridiculous thing to say, but that whole inner monologue, it just, it's so good. right okay And why did Chandler turn the gun down in the first place?
00:09:17
Speaker
because it has sugar in it. And I remember that just because I think he says, is it sugarless, which to me was just an odd, you know, I can get sugar free. And even then he feels a little dated. I don't know. Yeah. I don't know. I don't think his dates. Well, what I do know about the gum is if it's sugar free, like it won't stick to dentures.
00:09:41
Speaker
So that so that was like a legit question I used to hear as a kid from my from family members that had dentures and I always thought that was so weird right but yeah but I have no idea if that's a normal thing that anybody has ever heard before. I think so I think even with fillings I don't know yeah I think now that I'm casting my mind back maybe I was told too if it has sugar in it it would stick to dental work and stuff Yeah, I don't know something to that. I don't know if it's true or not, but yeah. Hmm. Let's see. What? Oh, no, no, it's your turn. Your turn. Oh, no question. No, I asked about the sugar list. Oh, that's right. Of course you did. Of course. Yeah. And you got it right. So it's your turn. My turn. This one's kind of two parts.
00:10:31
Speaker
Okay. When the cat jumps on Ross, water so good what a joy and Phoebe singing and in real life who sings that song. I know the song. Hang on. I'm going to sing it to you because the worst thing, one of the absolute worst things that I am is saying actual like who's seen songs and what the actual titles are.
00:10:58
Speaker
right But they're looking down on creation and the only explanation that I i can sing you the entire song. right Do I have any idea what the name of it is? Nope. Do I know who sings it? Absolutely not. I would say like, wait, is it like earth, wind and fire or somebody like that? yeah you can't youre in the right in the right time frame. Of course. I would say yes, because it the song is Top of the World by The Carpenters.
00:11:30
Speaker
The Carpenters. Okay. so Yeah. Again, I, I couldn't, I bet you I can sing every single one of their songs, but my own. yeah i complete There's so many things like, um, a tangent recently, somebody or something to do the Pearl Jam. And I was like, I don't know if I could name a single song. I know Pearl Jam songs, but I don't know the names of them.
00:11:54
Speaker
Right. You can just sing them. Yeah. And I read all that in the original. That's Pearl Jam. But I don't know if I'd know the name. OK, but wait, I have a question. OK, you did not grow up here in the United States. so But you all had Pearl Jam? Yes. I mean, in the 90s music was that came across, you know, there was bands, some music that was big here was not big there, but quite a lot of American music came across and was was popular.
00:12:24
Speaker
Like what else? Oh, now I'm trying to think. See, I need to know. Okay. Did y'all have like the whole grunge, like vibe thing? Was that real big? Yeah. With Nirvana and all of that, it was kind of fringe, but it was there. Okay. You know, a bit like you had kind of punk and goth and grunge, you know, these kinds of subsets of things. Yeah. Those were around.
00:12:52
Speaker
And okay. Yeah. So a lot of 90s music did make it. Okay. Super fun. Super fun. So were you alternative music? A little bit. Kind of die? A little bit. Yes. Country western was your thing really, right? Yeah. I've never done, never been into the country. Country music. Like I've tried, especially the old stuff like Willie Nelson. I don't get it. I just, I understand he's a legend and you know, these kinds of things, but I just, it's not something I would put on that choice. Now, that being said, some of the really modern new country music in the last 10 years, like Darius Rucker has come away from Hootie and the Blowfish. I think his right country music is phenomenal. yeah And some of these new guys, um the last couple of years, again, I can't think of the name of their songs, I've seen them perform. It's really good. Like I like the kind of modern spin on country music a lot more than Garth Brooks and
00:13:52
Speaker
Again, I understand how incredible, legendary these people are. I know that one gets caked. I just don't fully get, I think you had to grow up with it. I don't know. Yeah, maybe falling out of a chair. I did. He might be done. Find a new co-host. That's right. Okay. Sorry. We just kinda, okay. Did you ask a question or did I?
00:14:20
Speaker
I asked you about the carpenters, hence the music. Oh, that's right. Yes. Okay. How many times whenever they're in the vestibule and then she asks him, you know, you do you want to call somebody? How many times does Chandler say?
00:14:35
Speaker
aor and ah ahha I think he's got to say that twice to Monica and once to Joey. So three again.
00:14:46
Speaker
yes
00:14:49
Speaker
in this episode so many threes that's fantastic I've got one final question for you okay although he's not introduced as mr. heckles we come to know this guy's mr. heckles yes we're gonna discuss that what yeah you say the cat's name is Oh, Bob-bo-buttons. Yeah, Bob-bo-buttons. That's it. I think it it might, yes, like Bob-buttons be stutters, so it comes with Bob-bo-buttons. Something like that. Something along the, I get a half a point for that. well Oh, you get the full point. ah yeah Yeah. You got it. That's the last one from me. Okay. I will have one more for you then.
00:15:37
Speaker
What does Monica get out of her freezer to offer to everybody? Oh, I have no, uh, a lasagna. I've got no idea. So she reaches in and she's like, Hey, does anybody want to eat? And she's in the freezer. She's like a Klondike soup is a Klondike bar. but na Oh, but it's melted. But it's melted. I didn't catch that at all.
00:16:08
Speaker
Yes. That's fantastic. I could sit and do questions for the whole hour that we usually do. I could too. I could too. It's my favourite. I have so many people who want to do the end of season quiz. We'll have to come up with another thing because two co-workers have said, I want on. I want on when you do a quiz. So we'll have to come up with something.
00:16:32
Speaker
Yes, that will be so fun. It'll be like, oh, OK, yes, we'll talk. We've got some ideas. Well, this episode will kind of dive into the one with the blackout. First thing I wanted to note is this is actually directed by James Burrows, who we talked about in the one with the butt.
00:16:49
Speaker
He's the guy who made the kind of cameo, the uncredited cameo, the the famous director. So this one is directed by him, which I don't think is a coincidence. This is a super popular episode. yeah But as we've talked about in the questions, we start off in Central Park and Phoebe's just about to break into song. um Only thing I really noticed was it's one of the few times there's other people sitting on the couch. I'm assuming so they get a better view of Phoebe.
00:17:18
Speaker
um but Maybe that's why our central park friends chose to sit to the coffee bar rather than the couch Yeah, because ah yeah, there's another episode where they come in and people are sitting on their couch Did you notice Gunther in the background? I did not know Yeah, he was in this one too and he's standing behind the bar with a couple of us a cup of coffee.
00:17:42
Speaker
And I love Gunther. And I love Gunther, like just I his dead end delivery. I love it. So and I love how much I don't notice he's just hovering around before he gets lines. Apart. That's a great catch. Yeah. Well, we go from there over to the infamous ATM Festibule where you talked about the lights flicking to go off and yeah, he's stuck with this woman. And we'll talk, of course, throughout this episode about Jill Gudeka. Yes.
00:18:12
Speaker
she features prominently but um yeah the lights go off and then it's straight over to the girls apartment where Monica hears that it's i believe this was going to be a trivia question all of manhattan parts of brooklyn and queens i knew that was gonna be enough why i didn't do it i thought you would ask too that's really funny yeah i also wanted to ask oh i'm sorry what Monica's wearing right Yeah, because she says it on the phone to her mom. Is she a sweater? Oh, that's right. Because her mom thinks she might meet us like an electrician or something. No. Well, she's like power company guys are eligible looters. That's right. Eligible. Let's get a brilliant line. Yeah, there are so many in this episode where it's just it was funny, just
00:19:04
Speaker
funny. Good. Now, I did get thinking Phoebe goes to call to she calls to check her grandma and she asked Monica what her number is because she never calls herself. And it got me thinking, like I know Kate's phone number. I know my parents numbers. It's the same number that I grew up with. So I feel like everybody knows their childhood phone number.
00:19:26
Speaker
but I feel I know, I don't know my kids' numbers. It's just in my phone. See, I know Fred's. I know Fred's. Okay. i I think I might recognize them if they came up. um and I think of like my mother-in-law who I speak to a fair bit. I couldn't tell you what her number is at all. Just saved it in my phone and I haven't looked at it since. But yeah I'm sure, do you remember your childhood phone number?
00:19:52
Speaker
Of course I do. Yeah, I think and universal truth. ra And like, you know, for us, we had um did you have like area codes and things like that? Is that a different system? be Yes, we had. Okay. And so like ours, like our phone number started off with like 370 and then the four digits and then but ah the city I grew up in, it was really small. And then it grew.
00:20:20
Speaker
So then they ended up adding in 370 and 625 as your first three numbers. Then they added in the area codes where you had to put in the area codes on top of it. So it turned your seven digits into 10. And, um, but yeah, like I remember my best friend's phone number growing up, my grandma's phone number, time and temperature, and it still works. really Like these numbers. Yeah. Like they are solidified in my brain. I can tell you.
00:20:50
Speaker
my of Joseph, my husband, I can tell you his phone number, I can tell you my older son's phone number, but then from my adult life, that's it. Yeah, I think that's it. you know I've got Kate's memorized. So growing up, our phone number ended in a seven. And there was quite a swanky hotel, not all that far from our house, that ended in a one.
00:21:14
Speaker
So we would get calls for that hotel quite a lot to the point where we would all answer the phone with the last four digits of the phone number because quite ah people would go, oh, sorry, wrong number and hang up the phone. And it was just a quick and easy way to do it. Yeah. um So I spent my life answering it with the last four digits of the number. Yeah. So it's in there forever. Mm hmm.
00:21:39
Speaker
Yeah. But let's see. We go back to the vestibule, of course, a lot of this episode is jumping back and forth between the apartment and the vestibule. And Chandler's inner monologues begin, and he realizes who he's stuck with. And of course, per your question, he starts mumbling. He's not mumbling at this point, is he? No, he's just freaking out. Yeah, that's right. Again, you see Chandler having some sort of existential crisis already.
00:22:09
Speaker
Have you ever been stuck in an elevator from anything like that? Does that ever happen to you? ah No. yeah I've been very fortunate. I've been very fortunate in life that that has not happened because I would panic. Now, I've spent a lot of time imagining how I would handle it if it ever happened. Right. Probably a lot more than the normal person. And for somebody who it has never happened to, why that's something I have planned out, I have no answer for. Right. That's it. i'm I don't think I was. I'm glad I'm telling you this now and not this morning, but I've been stuck. I got stuck in a roller coaster once.
00:22:50
Speaker
Oh, I think I think that happens. But that that's all right. Yeah, never in ah a lift in an elevator. Yeah, I've been stuck on roller coasters a few times. Okay. And in fact, most recently, my my two sons, and then my older son's girlfriend got stuck um last summer, whenever we were, and we were right riding a water ride. And the three of them had gotten on the those little logs before us and then the rest of us were about to load and then they stopped the ride and I'm like wait no no my my my children my children and they were like oh it's fine you know whatever and they're up at the top of the hill just sitting there waiting and I'm like uh uh they ended up getting like led off the ride and down the little thing and
00:23:45
Speaker
And then they got little skip the line passes. Thanks. Good. It took care of them. Excellent. Of course. Of course. Good. Yeah. Well, let's see. We go from the vestibule where they're stuck back up to the apartment. I don't know why I love Joey walking in with the menorah so much, but I do. I just I don't know. But I just there's something about Joey doing that.
00:24:11
Speaker
um Of course, Monica and Ross being Jewish know exactly what's going on there. Yeah. Let's see, poor ugly naked guy. He's lighting candles and evidently drips some wax or something very unfortunate. Ooh, that hurt. Yeah, it's never going to be good. But yeah, I love that it's Rabbi Tribbiani who's officiating at the racket. Yeah. i don't I think it's just because it's so such a big prop.
00:24:40
Speaker
You know, just trying to keep them lit. I don't know. There's something about that physical comedy. I just think it's great. And there's a lot of physical comedy with The Candles and then got so much with Chandler, like even in that very first episode, whenever he's like, oh, and then he turns around and he sees her he's in his hole i and And he kind of turns with a little swagger. Yes, yes.
00:25:10
Speaker
Let's see, if we go back over to the vest of you, and he hasn't spoken to Jill, and he does smile and creep her out. But that's when she offers him the phone to call someone, and he calls Monica, and this is perhaps the the most famous bit of the episode, as you brilliantly demonstrated earlier, because you start talking like this, and she doesn't get it at all.
00:25:34
Speaker
a But he says at one time to Joey and Joey knows and he is excited yeah that he communicates straight back. Yeah, the same way.
00:25:46
Speaker
And then he's ah like, I haven't thought of that. Right. So good. there's like big They're just big babies. so They're just teenagers at times. Oh, yeah. We go from there back and we've got a question about this scene for you, the girls' apartment. And they're discussing unusual places that they have done the deed. Is this again weird that Ross and Monica are having this conversation I don't know. Yes, yes, yes. But at least he acknowledges the fact that it's weird, because he's talking along and he's like, and that's my sister. Right. The fact that that conversation continues is just weird. Yeah. And the fact I don't know for because, Al, do you have a brother or sister? I've got two older sisters.
00:26:38
Speaker
Okay. See, and then I'm the older sister. I have a younger brother and he will say things sometimes just to try to see if I'm uncomfortable or annoyed or do you know what I mean? Just to kinda, but like and Monica being the younger one, but ah you know, it would be one thing if she was just trying to like get his goat or something. And that's not, not at all. What is happening?
00:27:05
Speaker
No, it's, it's, it's, it's such an unusual relationship. I don't know, but yeah, it continues. It continues throughout, but um we're still in the apartment and Ross and Rachel start having that discussion about, uh, what's about passion and Ross's passion in their future.
00:27:22
Speaker
Yes. and like ah Oh, go ahead. Yeah. Oh, and I giggled at him. I laughed. One of the times that I laughed out loud was whenever he's like, you know, passion burns out and what's left is trusted security. And then and the way he delivered that line, and in my case, lesbianism, yeah like it's It just, it cracked me up because it was the delivery of that wine that I was, because you know, I'm not his biggest fan and I think he's so whiny, but the way that he delivered that one, I didn't feel like he was.
00:27:59
Speaker
feel sad for me, everybody. Yeah. And I think he knows that he did quite well because he's got a little swagger after she said, oh, you're so great and walks away. Oh, yeah. Did she ruffle his hair? I don't remember. Yes. Yeah. Tussled. She did not run her fingers through his hair. She tussled his hair because that's very important. Yes. That's the conversation between him and Joey because he started talking about what was so funny because Joseph watched this episode with me.
00:28:29
Speaker
And whenever, and he stands up and he kind of, and then Joseph goes, is never gonna happen. My husband says that. And I'm like, what? And then sure enough, man, the next ah line that Joey says is yeah never gonna happen. And I'm like.
00:28:50
Speaker
And I was like, wow. So for whatever reason, that line stuck in my husband's head too. Well, it's I started Googling this and it's, and I don't know what I don't, I must've heard this before, but it really is true. This is the first popular culture reference to the term friend zone. This term, it was not used before. It was coined in this episode and was then used in other TV shows and in popular culture.
00:29:17
Speaker
No kidding. I thought I didn't know if it was like an urban legend or a bit of a myth so I got googling and no it's true like that phrase a bit like we're jumping seasons ahead commando um is used in a in a you know to mean something in friends for the first time but friendzone had not been used before that expression. I am shocked Yeah. I am shocked. Like my mouth is open. Yeah. All right. Wow. Yeah. Yeah. they And and ah Kate and I were talking about this today. We went ah for a little drive. and she'll Imagine being the writer who comes up with something like that. And then it just manifests itself in popular culture. And it's like you've actually altered language, you know, by just coming up with this fun little phrase.
00:30:06
Speaker
Could you imagine? That would be so wild. Yeah. Yeah. So was there's an an interesting little fact for you, but, um, yeah, that Joey convinces Ross, you know, I, love, ah to me, Joey's one of the most loyal friends. Like he's always looking out for his guys. He's both all of them. And he's like, come on, Ross, the wine, the moonlight, you know, let's go for it. You know, he's got his back here. Yes.
00:30:31
Speaker
We head over back to the vestibule where Chandler gets the gum. Or no, he says no at first, of course. But what's he doing? What's he doing? What is he doing? Having an entire episode all by himself only in his head. Exactly. Like that golly, like the whole thing with the whole conversation in his head is so funny. And she's just looking at him like,
00:31:01
Speaker
I don't know. Probably wondering, have you ever been like around somebody and wondered like what on earth is happening in their head right now? Something's going on. Some things are turning. Yes. Yes. And then you just kind of wait.
00:31:18
Speaker
one cell phone Let's hope so. Right. It did didt get me thinking. So in our household, you know Kate and I have been married for 10 years. yeah we've We've had to adjust to our gum situation because she really likes cinnamon gum. I can't stand anything cinnamon. It's just not my thing. She doesn't like green, like minty gum, like spearmint kind of gum. She says she's green for everything except gum.
00:31:46
Speaker
but so we've had to settle on blue gum. We get blue gum in our household, the majority of the time, whatever flavor blue gum is, but that's the one that we both like. So in your household, what's the gum situation? These are the hard-hitting questions that we ask on the podcast. Yes, yes, these these are important questions. indeed um So yeah, everybody kind of does their own gum situation because Joseph, my husband,
00:32:16
Speaker
He does not care for the gum. Like he doesn't chew gum hardly ever. No, no, that is not his thing. My younger son, my 11 year old, he is if he decides he wants to chew gum, it's gonna be your fruity, bubble gum, right? You're juicy fruit, yeah. you've You've got it, or your bubble tape. but Like, is that that has flavor for 34 seconds, and then you have to spit it out. disintegrates It yeah. Okay, do you remember fruit stripe gum? No. Oh man, okay, it had the best flavor, but seriously, you would chew it and
00:32:58
Speaker
10 seconds, you would have like four good chews and then it was gross, but it had such good flavor for those four seconds. Um, but me, I go back and forth. Fred really likes my older son. He really likes like watermelon flavored, um, and stuff like that. And then I, I, I I'll chew anything, but my, my preference is probably like,
00:33:26
Speaker
mint, like i but I'm not picky, like yeah blue or green or white mint. Oh, good. Oh, fine choices. And cinnamon, cinnamon I can do, but it it burns my tongue. Yeah. You know, it's just not flavor I've ever gotten on board with it anything really. Yeah.
00:33:47
Speaker
But there we go, so I know if I need some gum, you're the person to see. I like it. Yes, yes. basic We had to go back into the apartment and Phoebe's singing about the milk going bad.
00:33:59
Speaker
which is just so good. I feel like I need to Google, but I also want to just organically find out how many different songs she sings in the whole series. Oh, yes. Yeah, because I've got no idea. I'm sure somebody's counted it, but I think I just kind of want to stumble across them all as we work our way through these ends. Yes. Yeah. Because that that one is so funny whenever she's doing that.
00:34:27
Speaker
And then and then Joey tells because he's trying to keep Monica from going out there You know, you can't because of the thing because of the thing Well, it's it's your party Ross is planning your right The last time that I just died laughing at the end of this episode, right? It's so I good. Yeah. Yeah. He's trying wherever he can to help her Ross out. But Ross is outside of that cat. How did the cat get up that far? I'm curious about that. It obviously went outside. I don't know. It got stored. Maybe cats do that. I don't know. It gets up to the fourth floor or something. But yeah, that didn't look too closely, but I wondered how they filmed it.
00:35:23
Speaker
you know, the cat actually jumping on Ross, you know, I assume it was a real cat, you know, and all of that. but It was really well acted that scene. Oh, yeah. And then whenever they're inside, and ah he's out there and they're just singing along and everything. Yeah. Okay. But wait, when was it? Because I thought it was so funny. So it must have been after he says that and then they started talking. Oh, whenever Phoebe was talking about how she's the last to know everything.
00:35:56
Speaker
Yes. yeah That cracked me up too. Yes, because she whenever Chandler got bit by a peacock at the zoo, and then Monica had a crush on Joey, and then later on in the series, we get to actually see that, yeah you know? But that was cracking me up too. I do love it when they refer back to things that happened before the series got filmed. Like yeah you know a little peek into their life.
00:36:24
Speaker
Yes, I love that too. I love that too. Let's see. um Yeah, we're still in the apartment and Monica's treating the scratches. Yeah, Ross flipping that fake cat outside like that thing is going to get launched across the set. It's so funny. yeah and rachel And then Rachel's just holding the cat. Like this thing is not traumatized at all. No, no. And then, yeah, and then Joey spills the wax on him.
00:36:52
Speaker
Yeah, that's right. it Instead of the spray or whatever. Yeah. Do you know what back teen is? Have you ever used back teen? Yes. yeah Okay. All right. Yeah. And it didn't hurt. It didn't hurt. I was thinking, right? Cause I know that from having kids, so you're not going to use that if it really, if it stings or whatever. Yeah.
00:37:15
Speaker
The only thing that really caught my attention, this line, this is just me in this scene, this is me being pedantic, I think. yeah Rachel says that the cat's going to be trampled in the hall. There's no that no cat's going to get trampled in the hall of their apartment building. No. What does she thinks happening out there? But whoever it is suggests, they just chuck it out in the hall. Not saying that's what they should do, but no, the cat's going to be trampled. Yeah, no.
00:37:43
Speaker
and I don't think... I don't know. Her, you know, she's growing and learning. She is. She's growing into herself a bit. when We go back to the vestibule and this is where Chandler finally gets the gum. Now you, Joseph, you've been married a while. You probably have the same thing where you can kind of look at each other and and like a whisper or say a deep track line from a show because you both see oh yes this is one of Kay and I's lines like if we ever she ever says you want some gum ah you have to respond with gum would be perfection right of course you can't just say yes it's one of those things that makes us laugh and nobody else but there you go
00:38:25
Speaker
Yeah, well, yeah. So when we have one from this show, because me, my husband's name is Joseph, right? And at growing up, he was Joey. But then whenever we met, he introduced himself as Joseph. And I, that's, that's who he is. But a man always, Joey doesn't share food. Yes. Yeah. So whenever that fits beautifully.
00:38:54
Speaker
Yes. Yeah, it does. Except with me. Well, the the girls will. I know it's Rachel. Who else goes in the hallway? Rachel and Phoebe.
00:39:06
Speaker
Phoebe goes, and they don't have a Mr. Heckles door, and we'll talk about him in a bit, but he he's not, introduces Mr. Heckles, he's billed as something like the grumpy man, but he says it's his cat, and they know it's not, and then Rachel meets the infamous, I don't know. Yeah, and while they're talking to Mr. Heckles, Phoebe's holding the cat, and the cat's- That's right. Stassing out and sticking away, and then runs away, because he's scared of Mr. Crabby-ole, Mr. Heckles. Heckles. And he's one of these characters I really like, so I did a little deep dive into him. We can talk after we've ah gone through the episode, but an interesting guy. But Rachel ends up bringing Power Will to the apartment. And ah I spent a little while on this during my lunch break on Friday, trying to Google translate what he says.
00:39:56
Speaker
Whoa, ow. You are the MVP. You are the MVP. So what do you think? Well, two things. One thing is in the script, because I got digging into this, he was simply told to ad lib Italian, say what you want. Obviously, keep it clean and keep it relevant, but say whatever you want. um So I thought that was interesting. So he says, according to Google Translate,
00:40:24
Speaker
the first few sentences is, I've just moved in downstairs, so we will be seeing each other very often now. The first, the first sort of, yes, sentence or two, that's what he says. um And then, you know, Ross becomes aware of how much you're Rachel's touching him and this, that and the other. And then when great he does say something to Rachel, Google Translate says it's, I am actually moving. So it maybe didn't catch something quite right.
00:40:54
Speaker
Uh, maybe say I've actually moved in. I don't know. Yeah. Um, but here's a, here's a fun piece of knowledge for you. Um, so again, I, I went down a rabbit hole and I know that friends has translated into tons of languages and I thought, well, what did they do when they dubbed the whole show into Italian? Yeah. Right. Did he speak English?
00:41:19
Speaker
No, they dubbed over in Spanish and they renamed him Pablo for the Italian version of Friends. Wow. OK. Right. So no same but yet they had a Spanish guy dub over him and then renamed him Pablo for the guys who do who were speaking in Italian, dubbing over the show. I love that. That's awesome. Yeah. Let's see. We'll go from there. We're back into the best of you.
00:41:48
Speaker
Chandler attempts to blow the bubble. that I don't have the ability to blow a bubble. What? Kate's tried to teach me. It's the pain of my existence. I can't do it. I don't know. I don't have the dexterity. I don't know what it is. Wow. I've never, I've never once blown a bubble with any kind of gun. Oh my goodness. Wow. That is so sad. Can you whistle? I can whistle. Okay.
00:42:18
Speaker
yeah deep dark and yeah I'd love to be able to do that kind of like two fingers. I'd love to be able to do like, you know, so people three miles away could hear me. That's kind of cool. Can't do that yeah whistle. But the gum has eluded me. The bubble blowing situation. That's wild. taught Both of my boys had a blow bubbles. And then I have taught numerous kindergartners. It used to be a writing prompt that we would do and in the spring.
00:42:48
Speaker
And then um that it was like a how-to paper and they'd write, you know, first you do this, then you do that, last you do this. And then we would all chew bubblegums and, you know, and practice. And then it was real cute because they made little faces and we blew up balloons and taped it to them. And then it hung out in the hallway for open house. I love it. Yeah. But I'm so sad.
00:43:16
Speaker
Well, maybe when we get together, at some point we get together for coffee and recording an episode live. We'll have to throw in some gum tutorials. Yes, but we will not bring cinnamon gum. No, if you don't mind, that'd be very good. No, absolutely not. I do have a question. Get some good hubba bubba. Hubba bubba gum, hubba bubba frosting. Yes. Now, Chandler, when we get back to the vestibule, he starts to choke and all of that. No. Yeah.
00:43:42
Speaker
Fortunate, I guess, I've only ever seen the Heimlich maneuver performed on television. And every time the food shoots across the room. Is that real? I've never seen it done in real life. I assume it just kind of fell at the person's mouth. But it's for TV, it shoots across the room. Well, and then, OK, did you ever see Mrs. Doubtfire? Oh, I knew I'd never heard of it. I'm coming, Gary. And she comes in and does the Heimlich maneuver. Yes.
00:44:10
Speaker
And then her, you know, that's where you find out. i don No spoiler alerts for Mrs. Doubtfire. Okay. But, um, no, I don't think so. Um, I choked one time whenever I was a kid on eggplant and right yeah it was like in my mouth and hanging out. right So that's the thing. Yeah.
00:44:37
Speaker
But I don't think so. I assume that's just for TV. It makes sense though, like if you, you would have to have an awful lot of force. Right, right. so Yeah, I feel like that's a fair question. These are the things I find myself wondering about from time to time.
00:44:53
Speaker
but Let's see now, when we go back to the girls' apartment and I've written Pablo, I got the Pablo book. Pablo, he does say, look at the moons, the stars, all the beautiful things. Yes. um According to Google Translate, he says that in the Italian, so that kind of tracks. No, I am actually learning Italian right now. Really? Yes. And I did know part of, because um Italian, so I know a fair amount of Spanish.
00:45:24
Speaker
And, um, Italian and Spanish, there's a lot of words that kind of cross and I'm like, Oh, you know, yeah maybe a little, a little bit more. But yes, that part I knew whenever they were out there. Yeah. Yeah. We're going to sidetrack again of all the things. Why are we learning Italian? Oh, I'm going to Italy this summer. I did not know that I am. Yeah. We're going to go for 10 days. ah Me and my dad are going to go. That's really cool.
00:45:54
Speaker
Yeah, I'm super pumped. We will have to discuss that more. That's really exciting. I went to Italy when I was 16 or 17. I haven't been back, but I'd love to. I've been all around other bits of Europe with Kate and things, of course. But yeah, I had a great time. Awesome. See, I've been to Germany and I've been to like, um,
00:46:17
Speaker
Like all over in that did Amsterdam and all of that. But I've never been to Italy. My dad was stationed there whenever he was in the Marine Corps. And he's not been back since. Will you get to go back to where he was stationed or anywhere close? No. And I asked in but he said, no, we're going to go to the Vatican. Like and that was one of the things like that's one of the things that he talks about.
00:46:46
Speaker
whenever he lived over there. So it was going to Vatican City. So we're going to do that, but we won't go to the actual base. He he worked at the embassy there. So interesting. All right. Yeah. We'll have to discuss that more. Yeah. Um, yeah. Ross tries to explain to Paolo, you know, the relationship and calls him a crap weasel in the end. Yeah. He doesn't go well, does it? know Yeah.
00:47:12
Speaker
Okay, wait. so Whenever whatever um you know Ross is kind of talking to him and and trying to say things, and then he says ceviche. That's like sushi, right? Well, it's a Spanish or a Mexican dish that has raw fish or shrimp in it, and but it's not sushi, but it's like a dip.
00:47:39
Speaker
like okay i made a i I've made it, a lady I worked with last year it gave me a really good recipe and um we made it with shrimp and you put it on like a flat tostada chip, you know, those big browns and it was so good.
00:47:56
Speaker
Uh, we're going to need to dig into that as well. But that made me laugh because he was trying and I'm like, that's not what you think that means. I had to assume that there's some warrant in Italian or possibly Ross was trying to lean on some Spanish that's similar or something. And then he just comes out with, yeah. Yeah. But then we go to the best of you, Jill and Chandler playing the whipping pen game. I don't know if it has a name, but it's kind of sweet.
00:48:27
Speaker
You know? please It was It was sweet. Uh-huh. You know, yeah they mostly formed a little bond and it's and it's ah a nice way to pass the time, but there are times coming to an end because we flip, go back to the girl's apartment and the lights come on and Ross and ah ross Rachel and Paolo are kissing and that is completely weird and inappropriate and achy. Like when the lights come on, they're still just meeting up with everyone sitting there like, what are you doing?
00:48:55
Speaker
yes and ah well and and we know polo's disgusting i mean he's just gross yeah like what what i what's either what's happening yeah and then yeah oh and then ross is like me and then that's another joey's like this might not be the best time to tell you but you gotta throw a party spot
00:49:20
Speaker
It's just his timing. Oh, it's so funny. and i've got I've got to read my last my note for the last scene verbatim for you. ah In the vestibule, Chandler says goodbye to Jill and then asks the camera for copy of his video with his account number 7143457. The final note. Yes. Made sure I wrote that down. Kate is a wise lady. She's so funny.
00:49:49
Speaker
i again i think it's I love that Chandler asked for a copy of the tape. you know I think that's oh really Oh yeah, absolutely. Well, and then like whatever, do you need to make a call? Yeah, to about 300 guys that I went to high school with. And it's, a you know, yeah, he wants the video. Of course he does. And it doesn't have to have sound or anything. No, just we were there together.
00:50:16
Speaker
yeah Well, I definitely want when we have a new character who appears more than once, I kind of want to dig into them a little bit. I tried to look into the character who played Paolo and there's, he's still an actor. He's a career long actor in Italy. But yes, no his name is Cosimo Massimo Fusco. He hasn't done a whole bunch. Like he's kind of, you know, a lot of stuff that we would never have heard of here and there.
00:50:42
Speaker
but to But if we dig into Mr. Heckles, who is cast as the weird man, because he's just one of these side characters I love, um just this grumpy old character. um He had an Oscar nomination in 1980 for a film called Solly's Diner. I'd never heard of it. let's see, this was new information for me. So his name is Larry Henkin. And he actually auditioned for the role of Kramer.
00:51:08
Speaker
um over on Seinfeld, which I thought would have been interesting. um And Larry David, who famously created Seinfeld, Larry Henkin was his first choice. um He felt that Henkin was most familiar ah similar excuse me to his friend Kenny Kramer, who Kramer is based on, but other people voted for Michael Richards to take the role instead.
00:51:37
Speaker
But I just thought that was really interesting. He ended up being invited back and did play in one episode of season four on Seinfeld Playing a character called old Joe. No, excuse me. Just I'm not sure the character's name He ends up being a Breaking Bad playing a character called old Joe I've not seen Breaking Bad for very good things, but I haven't yeah haven't seen it He was in Pretty Woman. He was in Home Alone. My name is Aral. Ends up being in five episodes of Friends. He's 87 and is alive and well. Well, good for him. Yeah, I felt bad. I kind of googled the thing. And I wonder if he's still with us. And yeah, he's doing really well. um And I would like to go back to, I've watched Seinfeld all the way through once. And I'd like to go back and do it again. I'd like to see where he where he appears in that.
00:52:27
Speaker
Yeah. I, you said he was in a home alone too, right? Yeah. yeah I need to, yes. Yeah. Yes. and makes it a you And let's see. Um, I don't know if you've got ah something new for this week. I've got to be honest, I didn't know Jill Gudeka was a real person. Um, ah you know, Kate was quite surprised. She was like, Oh, she's really famous model. And she's been married to Harry Connick Jr. for like 30 years.
00:52:57
Speaker
which i i I didn't think she was real classic. I simply thought it was an actress playing a role. um She's from Lubbock, which is a couple of hundred miles west of us where we we are now. But yeah, she's from Lubbock. Yeah, wow. Good for her. See, I knew who she was. And yeah, that, I don't know, you know, like Cindy, craw she wasn't as famous as Cindy Crawford. Right. I would say Cindy Crawford,
00:53:26
Speaker
growing up in the UK was on stuff like advertising. You know, you saw her on the TV on adverts for makeup and things like she was a thing. I didn't even really know if she was a model. I mean, maybe I'm sure I did, but I just knew she was a a celebrity because she advertised things. Jill Gudaker, I'd never seen before. OK.
00:53:49
Speaker
Okay, so you know how you guys you know y'all y'all have talked about how are you and Steve talked a lot about Different characters like Caroline in the city and ah but crossover characters like that Steve's an expert in that. Yeah. Yes. Okay, so this episode is the blackout episode and It's tied to an episode on Mad About You, where it's a blackout in Manhattan, parts of Brooklyn, and what was, what was the? Queens. Queens. Queens, yeah. Yes, yes, I was, that was gonna be a trivia question. Right, yes. But those are tied, tied together too, so. Isn't that interesting? Yeah, I mean, I'm sort of recycle ideas.
00:54:47
Speaker
That's really interesting. That's another one, Mad About You. I've seen, it's been a long time, but I remember seeing a couple of episodes and thinking, man, this is a funny show. I've never gone back and found it like I'd like to go back and that's another one. Another one, when I've got plenty of extra time, I'll go back and rewatch that. Did you ever watch Mad About You in the 90s or anything? I remember there was an episode or two that I watched that that was one.
00:55:16
Speaker
Like, you know, and because I don't know, TV was so different in the 90s. It wasn't on demand and you had to wait and, you know, you set your VCR to tape or whatever. be home out in time and Right. Right. Or, or, it's or such a recorder and make sure that you hit PM instead of AM and whatever. Yeah. ahhu yeah um but um yeah go ahead oh no i was just saying so there was not a whole lot of things that i religiously made an effort to watch right you know yeah it's a lot more difficult to do um now thinking about our gunther central park my character of the week i thought it was a very ensemble episode oh yeah everyone's involved it's it's not really
00:56:12
Speaker
a bottle episode where they're in one location, they're really just in the two. So there was lots of good acting because the story didn't move from location to location for me. So we've talked to about Ross being a bit physical acting and yeah to be joy with that manure gets me every time, but I can't look past Chandler. Chandler, absolutely. It has to be.
00:56:35
Speaker
uhu Again, I love seeing Chandler go through a bit of a crisis in his own head. um Well, and I love it that we actually get to see what all is happening inside of Chandler's head, because you kind of know, you know, watching him and and in a normal episode, you don't get that inner monologue, but you could kind of pick up like, hes um but um, but yeah, no, ah I, I've wondered,
00:57:06
Speaker
Like if they're playing the sounds, like how they made that work. Because that it is so believable in the timing and his facial expressions. And and it's like, ah yeah. It's so clever. Well, something new we're going to start this week is thinking about ranking our episodes and giving them a score out of 10 coffee cups, which I think is a beautiful thing.
00:57:31
Speaker
um Just I think it'd be interesting when we finish each season to kind of look back and go, all right, what was our ah the best and the worst for each of us each season? Now, if you had to rank this episode at 10 coffee cups from Central Park, where do you think it would land for you? This episode would be eight coffee cups, eight coffee cups. Yes, I'm going to keep track.
00:58:00
Speaker
And it's funny you mentioned that I'm scribbling it down now. I'm going to have to get a little book out of some sort. And for myself, it would also be innate, you know, sort of on the the high end of just a good episode. Absolutely. Funny moments, you know, hilarious physical comedy as well as really funny lines. So it's nice that we both got coming in strong with an eight out of 10. It's a good one. It's a really good one. It is.
00:58:26
Speaker
um Well, next week we're going to be talking about the one where Nana dies twice. Right? I'm looking forward to this. And there's one scene in particular when I think of this episode, the sticks in my head. So I'm looking forward to discussing that episode with you. Okay, but I have a question. Is this the Sweet and Little Packets? It's the Sweet and Little Packets. It is? Yes, that's it. It's such a touching moment.
00:58:54
Speaker
yes It's just, it's it's a good one. So I'm looking forward to talking about that with you. But um as this podcast continues to grow, we're going to keep adding more sections such as lists or mail. 00:59:23
Speaker
but On that note, Deanne, any final thoughts? I hope that we continue our running streak of never getting stuck inside of an elevator or an ATM vestibule. That is... Oh! Do you know what though? Let me tell you a funny story, just real fast. My old my older son, whenever he was about 10, we were in Canada and we found a phone booth.
00:59:51
Speaker
And it was so cool because you never see phone booths with pay phones inside anymore. And of course he, I feel like he was wearing a Superman shirt. So it was perfect. So he went inside of the phone booth and closed it. And then we couldn't get him out. And it was probably about 15 minutes of panic, but he made it out. So don't worry. we didn't leave listeners He got out. Yes.
01:00:21
Speaker
that's So on that note, Deanna is safe with her kids. He's not stuck in a phone booth in Canada. And from me, thank you guys very much for tuning in to the Purple Door Podcast.
