Ben
Episode 52 is a watershed moment for me because when we signed up for this, I said, you know, let's do one episode a week for A year, 52 episodes. This would be it. I'd be out.

Richard
Yippee, this would have been your allies.
00:00:55
Richard

Ben
and we're halfway.
00:00:57
Richard
Yeah, we're just over halfway.
00:00:58
Ben
You don want raise the bat for the cricket-loving fans?
00:00:59
Richard
Yeah.

Debating 'Thought Leadership'

00:01:19
Ben
What exactly is thought leadership? What is that all about?
00:01:22
Richard
I love it. I don't know.
00:01:24
Ben
what do Why do our thoughts need leaders and and where are they going?
00:01:26
Richard
anyone really know what thought leadership means? We could package this up as a conundrum, I think, but I don't know.
00:01:35
Ben
We've got a lot of conundrums today.
00:01:35
Richard
Thoughts leadership, what is it? We do have a lot of conundrums. Thought leadership could be could be in there. But, yeah, I don't know. It's it's one of those. Is it a marketing term? Do you think thought leadership is a is it is a marketing term?
00:01:46
Ben
Who let the first person get away with saying...
00:01:47
Richard
Is it like someone who has opinions? Because that's pretty much everyone, right?
00:01:50
Ben
Yeah. yeah it it
00:01:53
Richard
Or maybe they have loud opinions. I don't know. Maybe opinions that connect to other opinions.
00:01:57
Ben
someone was was typing up there Someone was typing up their title on LinkedIn and they were like, oh yeah, I'm a thought leader.
00:01:59
Richard
Yeah.
00:02:04
Ben
That sounds good. And the way they went.
00:02:05
Richard
Yeah.
00:02:06
Ben
you know i rank it a ranert right in there with visionary leader.
00:02:07
Richard
Middle manager, cross that out, thought leader.
00:02:12
Ben
Like, I mean
00:02:13
Richard
Yes.
00:02:13
Ben
I don't think if you're calling yourself a visionary leader, then you've you've nailed the brief.
00:02:19
Richard
Yeah.
00:02:19
Ben
I
00:02:20
Richard
Maybe.
00:02:23
Ben
i think if someone else has used the term about you, yeah, okay, that's that flies.
00:02:27
Richard
Maybe.
00:02:27
Ben
i'll I'll let that run.
00:02:27
Richard
be
00:02:29
Ben
I'll let that one run.
00:02:29
Richard
Would you refer to that, like, if you if you have friends, you you're going to say, like, they're kind of, he's a smart guy or oh or she's really got it together or something. You know, that they they really get how this thing works. I wouldn't actually say, oh yeah, such and such is a thought leader.
00:02:45
Richard
Like, would you?
00:02:45
Ben
Yeah.
00:02:46
Richard
This just seems wrong it's because it's it's such a disconnected kind of a term, right?
00:02:47
Ben
it
00:02:51
Ben
I just imagine this, you know, old uncle following like thoughts around in the garden, you know, and trying to hurt them.
00:03:03
Richard
Where have all the thoughts gone?
00:03:04
Ben
Oh, goodness sake.
00:03:05
Richard
Yeah.
00:03:06
Ben
All right. Let's leave it alone.
00:03:06
Richard
Follow me. We will.
00:03:07
Ben
not We haven't got any, we could laugh laugh about this for a long time. We haven't got an answer.
00:03:11
Richard
Probably.
00:03:11
Ben
So so it's not a thing.
00:03:11
Richard
Hmm.
00:03:13
Ben
We're not, we're not, we're not

Travel Tips and Exit Row Anecdotes

00:03:15
Ben
allowing it. Travel tip of the week. These aren't travel tips so per se aha moments for me. I was in the exit row the other day and this girl who couldn't reach the overhead locker asked me to put a bag into the the overhead locker, which I was very happy to do, and then sat down in an exit row.
00:03:37
Ben
And I was thinking, that's awesome. There's clearly no like height limit for these rows. And that makes sense because we can all reach that red handle. And I had more room. so I was like, fantastic. Bring it on. I want everything.
00:03:52
Ben
five foot five and less, you're welcome to go ahead, own it, just book the exit row and lounge out. So it just never occurred to me that anyone, like I thought they were just chasing big burly guys and that's why I never had elbow room.
00:04:07
Ben
So it was a good win. I loved it.
00:04:09
Richard
Is the door hard to open?
00:04:10
Ben
Have you experienced that?
00:04:10
Richard
Have you? I've never i've never actually had the but position where I've had to open the exit door.
00:04:17
Ben
Well, you're telling me, yeah, go on.
00:04:18
Richard
Although I did like once when I was... Well, way I was going to say, just like I made a a casual joke once to the to this to like the check-in staff when they were scanning you, they asked you, you know, are you ready and able to assist in the event of an emergency?
00:04:34
Richard
And I said, oh, yeah, because I get to get off first, right? And they and they didn't they didn't they didn't give me the laugh.
00:04:37
Ben
yeah
00:04:40
Richard
they so You get the stony face.
00:04:41
Ben
and
00:04:43
Richard
I'm like, yes, no, sorry, all good.
00:04:43
Ben
it It doesn't land, does it? And this I was about to say, you were about to tell me that story because I actually had a similar story where they say
00:04:46
Richard
It doesn't mean it.
00:04:49
Richard
It's like, don't make a joke about the knife that you carry.
00:04:50
Ben
where they say
00:04:53
Richard
Yeah.
00:04:54
Ben
Yeah.
00:04:54
Richard
Yeah.
00:04:54
Ben
Having heard the briefing, are you willing and able to help in the event of emergency? and i And I said, last time I had to open this door, it got stuck. Am I going to have that problem again?
00:05:04
Ben
And again, it just it did not land. Like, come on, Ben, pick the moment. you know
00:05:11
Richard
yeah
00:05:13
Ben
What have they just, they've just briefed a dozen people and they've got this cuckoo guy in the corner trying to crack jokes about emergency doors not opening.
00:05:14
Richard
yeah
00:05:21
Ben
Yeah. Yeah. bob
00:05:23
Richard
It is hard enough for them to get everyone's attention though, because everyone sits down and puts the headphones straight on and then they're going to go around they're going tap like, you know, 10 people on the shoulder to, Hey, Hey, can we do that?
00:05:25
Ben
That's right. Put their headphones in. Yeah.
00:05:30
Ben
Yeah. Yeah.
00:05:33
Richard
Cause they do that special little briefing for the, for the 14 or 15.
00:05:37
Richard
Yeah.
00:05:40
Ben
yeah, it's, there was, there was one brand and I've forgotten now, but they actually went and individually pointed at each person and said, are you willing to help in the event of emergency?
00:05:42
Richard
it
00:05:50
Ben
And you had to verbally answer yes. I think that was to clarify that you could speak English. cause it was an English speaking airline.
00:05:57
Richard
Oh, interesting.
00:05:58
Ben
Yeah. Yeah. It was an interesting one.
00:06:00
Richard
Well, Virgin makes you get the card out and actually pretend to read it.
00:06:03
Ben
Yes. Yeah.
00:06:04
Richard
Yeah.
00:06:04
Ben
i I'm a good pretend reader. Yeah. I've done that multiple times now.
00:06:07
Richard
Yeah, excellent. Well, it's all pictures anyway. It's a bit like Ikea.
00:06:10
Ben
Yeah. That's right.
00:06:12
Richard
Who can really put that together?
00:06:13
Ben
That's right.
00:06:14
Richard
So I don't know.

2FA SMS Tip for Travelers

00:06:16
Richard
you're the last off, right, when you're in row 14 or 15.
00:06:18
Ben
Yeah.
00:06:20
Richard
And, yeah, it's not so bad when they're with their emptying from front and the back, but, like, when they when you turn up somewhere and it's pouring rain, they're like, oh, we're all getting off to the front today.
00:06:20
Ben
Yeah.
00:06:23
Ben
It takes a long time for the plane to empty.
00:06:28
Ben
Yeah.
00:06:33
Richard
You're like, no.
00:06:35
Ben
Here we go.
00:06:35
Richard
Anyway.
00:06:35
Ben
Yeah, thanks for having me. the so The second tip was, you remember we always use eSIMs when we're traveling.
00:06:44
Richard
Hmm.
00:06:45
Ben
When I was in Japan, and i was we'll come to that later, I needed to get a two-factor authentication so that I could use an app that I downloaded. And I thought, oh, but I don't want to turn on data roaming because I don't want to pay for the international day pass at the the penal local provider rates.
00:07:04
Ben
So I didn't end up downloading that app. And I've since found out that you can receive two-factor authentication SMSs and you don't and it doesn't actually start the daily roaming charge.
00:07:19
Richard
Really?
00:07:19
Ben
So, yeah, that's obviously with my local provider and I encourage listeners to check with their own. But you can... turn it Turn on mobile roaming, receive a 2FA, SMS, and then turn it back off and you won't be charged their daily rate.
00:07:34
Ben
So that was, and i only found that when I got back. So it's useful for next trip, but completely useless for when I was trying to use that app.
00:07:41
Richard
Is that because one the one message is just like super small and they give you like two free messages? Like you know how when you turn up in the country and you get that text that says, hey, turn on roaming to do blah, blah, blah, blah or whatever?
00:07:46
Ben
Well, hmm.
00:07:54
Ben
I don't think it's about the size. I think it's about the fact that you're receiving rather than sending. Like as soon as you respond, like if you tried to send an email or send an SMS and gloves off, that's, you know, you've, you're using their service.
00:07:59
Richard
okay.
00:08:07
Ben
But if you're just receiving the SMS, it's, yeah, it's part of the, it's part of the package.
00:08:08
Richard
Okay.
00:08:12
Ben
So there you go. Hmm.
00:08:13
Richard
Fascinating. Okay. Sweet.

Listener Feedback on Hotel LED Lights

00:08:16
Ben
Hey, we got some listener feedback. it was interesting. Listener BH, he's concerned and wondering what happens to the black dots that I'm leaving in hotel rooms. And wants to know, are they being removed or are they being recycled?
00:08:28
Ben
but My guess is they're not being removed because they're actually quite subtle and they're just blocking out a an LED red on indicator.
00:08:37
Richard
Do you think they'd notice? Yeah.
00:08:38
Ben
Yeah, that's my guess. But the reality is I haven't...
00:08:41
Richard
Or maybe you're flagged as the black dot guy and they and they know.
00:08:43
Ben
Yeah, potentially. I have started to use some of those custom black dots with, you know, BCC image on them. So that's definitely going to be more of a thing to spot.
00:08:55
Ben
But the reality is I haven't been back in the same room. Well, even, yeah know, the one city that I go to the most and stay generally at the same mot hotel, I still haven't, to the best of my knowledge, been put in the same room.
00:09:07
Ben
So, yeah, so I don't know.
00:09:08
Richard
Really? Wow. I've had the same room heaps of times, actually.
00:09:12
Ben
Yeah. Have you? Well, then you're you're the person who should be testing this, not me.
00:09:13
Richard
yeah.
00:09:17
Ben
But you're not bothered you know not bothered by LED lights blinking in your eye.
00:09:17
Richard
Yeah, should do.
00:09:21
Ben
You're like some sort of weirdo.
00:09:22
Richard
not really. I mean, I could just, know, put a shoe over it or some proper vase up against it or something, you know.
00:09:23
Ben
LAUGHTER
00:09:29
Ben
Now I've got to carry extra shoes and stuff instead of black dots.
00:09:30
Richard
Uh,
00:09:34
Richard
Well, you take them off before you go to bed, typically.
00:09:34
Ben
oops Oh, yeah, that's true. Yeah, that happens, I suppose. yeah

The Expiry of Easter Egg Ownership

00:09:40
Richard
You could wear them to bed if you want.
00:09:43
Ben
a Conundrum of the week, mate.
00:09:45
Ben
There's trouble brewing in my household. Tell me what you think about this. Tell me what you think about this. What's the statutory legal expiry date for Easter egg ownership in a house?
00:09:55
Richard
Oh, yes. Yes.
00:09:57
Ben
Now, when I was growing up, like, I always had the impression that, you know, it was Easter Monday, you know, or or seven days, like seven days, you know, because you could genuinely remember who got given the, you know, the white chocolate bunny and and who got given the, lint you know, but Bilby or whatever.
00:10:18
Richard
The purple one. Yep.
00:10:19
Ben
Yeah. But my daughters have got an unbelievably annoying capacity to allow Easter eggs to just sit in our fridge for like months, literally months.
00:10:31
Ben
And honestly, I think it's unreasonable.
00:10:32
Richard
It's an admirable skill. Same.
00:10:34
Ben
Yeah, yeah, it's definitely not something that I'm able to attest to
00:10:38
Richard
same
00:10:39
Ben
But at some point, they have to become mine, right? Like there's got to be our you know, possession is nine-tenths of the law and I own the fridge. So where where do we sit on this?
00:10:53
Richard
Well, it's a tough one. We have the same challenge in our household. My daughter is actually incredibly incredibly happy to just, just we've we've still got little lint rabbit sitting there from Easter that I'm not allowed to touch and have been expressly forbidden from manhandling.
00:10:56
Ben
Okay.
00:11:04
Ben
Nah. It's wrong. It's wrong.
00:11:09
Richard
But surely it goes off.
00:11:09
Ben
Like...
00:11:11
Richard
I don't know. the the There must be a time out there somewhere. i don't know what it is. and I'm unwilling to risk wrath at the moment.
00:11:17
Ben
Yeah. It's probably more than the three weeks. It's probably more than the three weeks that you and I are hoping for. like
00:11:26
Richard
Yes.
00:11:27
Ben
But I mean, i didn't even know Easter eggs had expiry dates because I never bothered to let them last long enough eventually.
00:11:32
Richard
Well, the chocolate does go ne chocolate does go kind of you know. yeah
00:11:37
Ben
Yeah, eventually. That's why she keeps it in the fridge, I guess. But yeah, okay.
00:11:41
Richard
Yes.
00:11:42
Ben
If we're circling around, like I try to put a pen in it. i usually sort of say, you know, I try to put it like a financial, you know, end of year, 30th of June whatever.
00:11:53
Richard
Fridge clean out. End of financial year. There we go.
00:11:55
Ben
Yeah, that's right.
00:11:56
Richard
of June.
00:11:57
Richard
I think that that that stacks up.
00:12:00
Ben
one I think one time they tried to tell me it was the next important celebration, which unfortunately my house meant my birthday. And that was like in August. And I'm like, nah, we're not leaving Easter eggs.
00:12:10
Richard
that's That's miles away.
00:12:12
Ben
We're not leaving Easter eggs in my house until August. What could go wrong? Hey, that's it, Richard.

Preview of Richard's Japan Trip

00:12:18
Ben
Listeners have been BCC'd on our week. To listeners, thanks for joining in. We always love hearing from you. Next week's show, we're actually doing a deep dive special edition on my recent trip to Japan. Now, i've seen Richard's list of questions. It's definitely going to be a longer format one for sure, but it's going to be a fair bit of fun, so I'm looking forward to that. See you next week.
00:12:41
Ben
Bravo, Charlie Club, out.
00:12:43
Richard
And that's the pod.
00:12:49
Ben
Thank you.
