Catching Up and Weather Talk

00:00:07
Speaker
Well, hello and welcome to this week's episode of the Purple Door Podcast, a friend's rewatch pod and one of your hosts, Alistair, alongside, as always, Deanne. Deanne, how are you this evening? It's sweaty, Al.
00:00:21
Speaker
It is sweaty up in this place. Yep. My mother-in-law just sent a text to our sort of family group chat that 106 degrees is what her phone says. and That's disgusting. It's beyond hot. It's just icky. um I got in the pool deliberately so I could then fire up the grill because it was the only way to cool off enough to do I've discovered. Yeah.
00:00:51
Speaker
ah Yeah, we're entering that. You're cooking out this evening?

Grilling and Simple Meals

00:00:55
Speaker
I did. Yeah, about an hour ago. Oh, you did? Yeah. Nice. Yeah, some bacon wrapped chicken on the go. Nice and simple.
00:01:02
Speaker
Yeah. And it stops heating the house up too, which is always nice. That is nice. A big, yeah big

US World Cup Excitement

00:01:10
Speaker
fan of that. But before the Big Mac, we're recording this on, what, Monday evening? It'll be released on Thursday. There's the big US World Cup match in an hour or so. So we're recording this ahead of that.
00:01:23
Speaker
Yeah. Go USA. That's right. but as suppose we'll know when this... Who are we playing? ah Belgium. Belgium. Belgium. Yes. Man, I don't want to get all crazy or anything.
00:01:38
Speaker
But ah so I know little about the World Cup, little. OK, but what I will say is that.
00:01:50
Speaker
um What but I was um I don't really know how I feel about this whole controversy Going into the the game tonight. Yeah, it's ah there's a lot going in.

Theme Park Experiences and Friendly Cities

00:02:05
Speaker
And like said, by the time this episode comes out, everyone will know what's happened in the game. But yeah, it's it's yeah been it's been a bit of a distraction from the team. We can certainly say that.
00:02:17
Speaker
Yes. Yes. And ooh, okay. Ooh, can I also share this? Please. And I feel like we talked about this a little bit last time that you and I were chatting.
00:02:29
Speaker
but You know, I work at the theme park that's very, very close to where the Dallas or the Arlington, where the stadium is.
00:02:41
Speaker
Yes. Where, okay. i have And I have gotten to talk to so many people from so many different countries. i love that. world And it is so cool.
00:02:53
Speaker
But. I heard on the radio, and so, you know, it must be true, right, um that all the people that have been traveling to North America for the World Cup ranked the cities, the host cities?
00:03:11
Speaker
Mm-hmm. And do you know that we weren't even in the top five? How rude. I'm not shocked, but how rude nonetheless. you know what number one was?
00:03:22
Speaker
And i was shocked. sure Let's see. i'm goingnna Being a Scot, I'm going to have to guess Boston. So, no, but Boston was like number two.
00:03:35
Speaker
Right. Yes, no. Number one was New York. Now, that surprises me because the stadium is in New Jersey. it's not so And New York's kind of easy to to say that's the best. That's interesting.
00:03:52
Speaker
No, no, not the best. no It was not ranked for the best. It was the friendliest. Oh, friendliest. And I was like shocked because like Georgia was in, I mean, um Atlanta, right? Right. Was up there and Seattle was up there.
00:04:14
Speaker
and then there was, and I can't remember what the fifth one was, but I was like, what about Dallas? We're so nice. And, you know, i would take it a step further because the stadium's in Arlington, which to me is more of a Fort Worth suburb. Yes. And Fort Worth's a pretty friendly, western-like, it's an... Yeah.
00:04:36
Speaker
Absolutely. So I feel like maybe... And i I've seen with my own eyes, a lot of people have traveled to Arlington. Mm-hmm.
00:04:47
Speaker
But... Interesting. Interesting. And everybody's always so nice, so I don't understand, and I am very offended. You're taking this personally. I am offended for all of

'Bamboozle' Trivia Game on Friends

00:04:58
Speaker
us. I am, especially considering, like, and and we we were, I was talking about this um because I had to work this past week, and I worked a bunch of days in a row over there in Arlington, and we were talking about, you know, it's weird because, like, New York is known for the, I'm walking here, and all the people and all Right.
00:05:19
Speaker
So strange. That's a strange one. So anyway, i just, i i I needed to get that off chest. get that out there into the universe. Well, maybe by the end of the tournament, Dallas will have climbed climbed up because we've got quite a few more matches coming to the Dallas Stadium. So we've still got about two weeks to go.
00:05:40
Speaker
And if anybody is listening, like just make sure you're being super, super nice because that's right um ah you're representing all of us. That's right.
00:05:51
Speaker
All of us. I love it. The nicest city. We are aiming for number one. Number one. yeah yes I would have even been happy to be in the top five.
00:06:04
Speaker
Well, let's talk of number one. Neither of us are really in the lead in position number one with Bamboozle because we have time. No, because we keep tying. We keep tying. So let's see what happens this week. I'm a little nervous about today, though. I we have to be honest.
00:06:19
Speaker
Yeah, untested questions. It has been a little bit since we've recorded. So and we met him Kate, I don't think has looked through the questions. So we're just going to go for it and see what happens.
00:06:31
Speaker
Yeah, let's just. It's going great. It is. One, two, three, four. This is episode five. So who goes first? That would be me. All right. I'm ready for you. All right.
00:06:42
Speaker
Al. Yeah. We're in the scene where Kathy's running, in run in running, in runin running, running. And Chandler is just, um I don't even know what word to use, um but embarrassing.
00:06:57
Speaker
and What's on her shirt? What's written across her shirt? Oh, it is Varsity. And I know that because it's the second time it's mentioned in the episode.
00:07:09
Speaker
Yes. Because rate the guy Rachel's dating is hoping to get on Varsity. Yes. It caught my eye. That's a good question. um ah My first one for you. In the opening scene before the theme song, what book is Rachel reading?
00:07:27
Speaker
It's one word, big letters on the cover. Fashion. No, that's a great guess. It Anthem. Anthem? It's a real book. I looked it up. Of course you did. Yes. And what is it?
00:07:43
Speaker
It's a book about, I can't remember, it's a couple of young ladies who take like a road trip across America to find the sort of metaphorical anthem of the country, like the heartbeat of what America really is. Something like that. It sounds kind of cool.
00:07:59
Speaker
Yeah. I'm going to put it on my list. On the list it goes. Heck yeah, i am. um Anthem. Yep. Yep. A real book. kind Kind of a white cover.
00:08:13
Speaker
Okay. Yeah. And it's big. Yeah. It's good size book. Like it was a big book. I didn't notice that it even had the title. Yeah. All right. What's your second one for me? You're winning.
00:08:26
Speaker
You're winning now. Good job. Thank you. All right. So I'm still in that same scene because that was just pure chaotic awesomeness. Yes. Yes.
00:08:38
Speaker
um What theme song is playing whenever Chandler takes off? It's in my notes and I'm not going to look. It is. ah I'm never going to get it, even though I did look it up.
00:08:53
Speaker
Is it like the Million Dollar Men? That's such a good guess. And that's the one...
00:09:03
Speaker
That's it, yes. In the opening of The Office, in the pilot The Office. Yes, yes. Okay, but no, it's the Mod Squad. The Mod Squad, yes, I've got that written down. All right. Are you familiar with that at all? No, like i think I know the theme, but I don't know if I know it from Friends.
00:09:22
Speaker
That was the thing. So sometimes it's like, yeah, I know the theme song, but not from the show it was on. um All right, this is your chance to level it. Where did Ross and Amanda go on their first date?
00:09:36
Speaker
Chuck E. Cheese. Yeah, they did. Chuck E. Cheese. All right, we are tied to one apiece. All right. So who did Joey compare Kathy to when he was all upset at Chandler?
00:09:54
Speaker
ah Who did he compare? Oh, Janice. Janice. Yes. Nice. Yeah, good little throwback to Janice. Yes. You know I love a good Janice throwback. Anything with Janice. Absolutely. Janice and Joey's date are fun. They are fun.
00:10:12
Speaker
Well, speaking of Joey and Kathy, how did they meet? In an acting class? You've got In an acting class. Yeah, and they kept getting paired up.
00:10:22
Speaker
That's right. Okay. Okay. um What did Josh steal from Rachel?
00:10:32
Speaker
He stole... Is it just one thing? Two things. Okay, he stole some money. And then her jacket. Yes. Very good. Because I know he stole something that was actually Monica's and gave it to Rachel. I can't remember what kind of jewelry. No, that wasn't it.
00:10:50
Speaker
Yeah, that was something else, wasn't it? Oh, then he stole two things from Rachel and he stole the ring from Monica. Yes, that was it. And she thought that he used the money to buy her rings. But no.
00:11:04
Speaker
But no. What psycho. Yeah, kind of nuts. All right, question. I've got a question before written down, but i'm going to actually skip to another one. What's Amanda's son's name?
00:11:16
Speaker
Tommy? It is Tommy. Well, I thought that might catch you out. is Tommy. Yes, because whenever he comes in and he's like, hey, Tommy, who wants to make a long distance phone call? That's right. All right.
00:11:31
Speaker
What are... Joey, Kathy, and Chandler eating whenever they all went out. Like, what's on their table? Oh, that's I can picture the scene. What's on the table?
00:11:50
Speaker
I have no idea. is it just, is it could ask, is it just one thing? Well, they all have a drink, but I wasn't going to make you tell me their drinks.
00:12:03
Speaker
ah But there is one plate, like an appetizer. okay Okay.
00:12:11
Speaker
What could it be? Going to have to go with some kind of mozzarella sticks. Which is a very decent guess. ah And that is the king of appetizers, in my opinion.
00:12:26
Speaker
Yes. But it's a plate of potato skins. Ah, that's... Like those, like, potato skin things that were yeah so very popular for a while.
00:12:37
Speaker
And i don't, I don't know if they're still way. don't know if they are. not I mean, I've not got nothing against them. Nothing wrong no But they're not my appetizer of choice. Yeah. No.
00:12:49
Speaker
Okay, but what is? I think I try not to eat an appetizer because of coursell I'll end up being too full and I'll eat my whole main entree. and But if I was going to, i think I'm with you. I think a good mozzarella stick with a marinara sauce or something just, that hits the spot.
00:13:09
Speaker
and it's this small Yes. Yes. Oh my. Okay. Sorry. and All right. it's Well, this is this is for the win. because I got that wrong so here we go I've got a couple of questions I could choose from but I think this is a classic question oh when is Rachel's birthday May 5th yeah it is a ding ding ding there you go oh my god I should have gone for the other question which I'll ask you in second ask it now all right Ross organized the soccer team scores on what
00:13:43
Speaker
Oh, oh, his Commodore 64. You would have just run with it anyway. Yep. Yes. Awesome. Well done. That was, I thought that was very specific. And if you knew it, you knew it and you did. Yeah.
00:14:00
Speaker
Okay. Well, hang I've got one more question for you if you want it. Go for it And I actually have one more for you. I just realized. So you go for it. Okay. What does Chandler bring to the girls' apartment at the end of the episode?
00:14:13
Speaker
Is it a pillow? It is. Yes, and extra your credit if you can tell me about that, anything about that pillow.
00:14:25
Speaker
It wasn't just a pillow. but Is it a couch pillow? Well, that catchs that doesn't exist, a couch cushion. No, I don't know. A couch pillow does too exist.
00:14:38
Speaker
Does it? couch pillow? Yeah, like the little ones. Don't you put it in decorative pillows? You all have those. That's true. It's a couch pillow. Yeah.
00:14:49
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, ah people probably call them other things too. Yeah. I knew what you meant. Well, tell me what was specific. It's a big body purple pillow and then blanket.
00:15:00
Speaker
And she's got her blanket wrapped around her. He's got his wrapped around him. And then she's like, sure, come on in. And I thought it was so sweet. It was a sweet scene. It's a sweet scene.
00:15:10
Speaker
Well, just for giggles, what age did Phoebe have to live on the street? Fourteen. Fourteen. See, you just you would have run this whole thing. yeah Look at you go. I love it.
00:15:23
Speaker
Will, Willison has taken the lead. I think that's fantastic. Um, who I bet. and now joy i a good win I'm trying not to gloat. I apologize. Oh no, you gloat away. I really like to win. if It's one thing we

Friends Episode Discussion

00:15:37
Speaker
know. Wilson enjoys good, a good well-earned victory as you did here. That was amazing.
00:15:43
Speaker
Well, let's get let's get right into this. We start off in Central Park. Ross already driving me crazy. He's got the number of this, the girl. We don't know who the girl is at this point. And he's just trying to make Rachel jealous. They are just going at it. This whole episode, the two of them, um you know, accidentally throwing it down on her book.
00:16:05
Speaker
All of that stuff. It was so ridiculous. Just pathetic. and But Rachel gets her own back a little bit when Phoebe goes to sneeze and she yeah she grabs the number. um I thought it was the only thing that ah jumped out at me. It was later on in the episode. Ross is kind of going on that it's her home number.
00:16:24
Speaker
um which which would tell me it's not her work number but then when he goes he goes over later she leaves her cell phone number so she has a cell phone at this point but yet gives her home phone number so yeah sign of the times it's interesting and yeah for sure for sure well and in my notes There was a red and blue or red cup and a blue cup in front of Joey and Monica. Taylor had a green cup. Phoebe has a lavender cup. Rachel has a blue cup.
00:16:57
Speaker
And Ross has this like pink rose colored cup. i didn't it I'm obviously off my game. It didn't occur to me to ask the colors of the cups in bamboozled.
00:17:09
Speaker
Yeah, there was just so many ah cups in that opening scene. So that's in my notes with little cars. So I don't know. Good to know. We continue at Central Park. I love this when Gunther asks Rachel when her birthday is and then just completely ignores Ross. um Yeah. um I think ross does Ross say when his is? I know in the Friends universe. remember this sam He goes, oh, mine's just December. And he goes, yeah, whatever.
00:17:38
Speaker
like i I think in the Friends universe, his birthday ends up being another date. i think I think it's Ross that they at least at least Ross ends up with two different birthdays, depending on what season you're watching. interesting.
00:17:54
Speaker
Chandler sees a pretty girl. She's pretty. Oh, pretty. Pretty. and he's What's the worst that could happen if he goes up and talks to her? um I love that little interaction there. He he could die.
00:18:08
Speaker
Monica's like cheering him Yeah. Good for Monica. Good friend. Yeah. I do love the line of, you know, in fact, it's in a little bit, isn't it? Well, it's the same scene where you kind of wish me luck and Ross just oblivious. Good luck. Wish it. Yes. Yes. That was so funny. Yeah. So good. Rachel and Ross, they are continuing their battle back and forth. She's teasing him for going to Chuck E. Cheese on the first date with who we discover. Her name is Amanda later on. Well, and now in this scene, we find out. Is it? Yeah, because whenever he was making the big deal in the opening, he says the lovely Amanda. Ah, yes. And all of that. And then you took your kids to Chuck E. Cheese and you didn't even kiss her. Right.
00:19:04
Speaker
It's like I feel like this is I need to go back and think about like the one with the ballroom dancing and the cuffs and the cat, the last three. This seems to have come out of nowhere to me. The two of them are just going back at it like this.
00:19:16
Speaker
yes well it did because ross hasn't been around yeah the last three episodes have been very very ross light which i have appreciated to be glorious in the willison world it a seriously and whenever we get to the end i feel like um yeah like ross being around didn't help this No, at all no, no, not, not at all. Chandler does get up the courage. We're proud of him. He goes and he talks to, talks to Kathy. And it's funny. So awkward. It's, it's, you know, with, was it with a C or a Like yeah he just, he's trying.
00:19:57
Speaker
Well, is she's so funny because she's like, wow, you're really good at this, you know? like this ah And it's funny. It's funny. We'll get into this, but I like them together. You know, this point, they they play it very well. But unfortunately, Kathy is waiting for a date and it's with Joey, which makes things makes things a little awkward for a few minutes. But ah i don't like when Joey goes, oh, he's always showing off because Chandler doesn't show off. I don't think.
00:20:29
Speaker
That's the only thing I didn't. I didn't love that line from Joey. Yeah, well, interested and because there's multiple times, or I say multiple, it felt like a lot of Joey talking to Kathy about Chandler. Yeah. And it none of it is a very flattering.
00:20:52
Speaker
Right. You know, because like there's this story about him vomiting and then this, I told you he's always showing off and You know, and and that makes me sad because I didn't think Joey was like that. It doesn't feel like Joey. Joey is universally thought of. I say universally. Most people in the you know Friends fans think Joey is one one of, if not the best friend to the other five.
00:21:20
Speaker
Right. um Which I'm certainly on board with that. So it does feel a bit out character. The other kind of plot in this story starts because Phoebe starts singing and she's got her recipe, sultry voice. And I do love the line where she's like, what is it, Gunther, be a good boy and get me a whiskey. Yeah. that Which I'm going to assume they don't have.
00:21:45
Speaker
Right, right. And then it also made me laugh because she, you know, apologizes at the beginning for sneezing. And then she's like, well, except for the last birth of the pepper people. And that made me laugh.
00:22:00
Speaker
Because was like, it's so weird. What I would give to hear a good verse, nay chorus of Pepper People. Right. That would be a fantastic song.
00:22:12
Speaker
um We go up to the boys' apartment and Chandler's rubbing his eyes coming out. it I was going to ask you what time the yeah the he meets Kathy in the living room.
00:22:23
Speaker
And I would have guessed two. But I'm wrong because it's right here in my notes that it was 2.30. Yeah. He gets up and Kathy is, ah she's ready for this Arnie Kovacs show who I had to Google.
00:22:35
Speaker
Oh, I did too. so Yeah. I did too. And AI really wanted me to talk about Sandy Kovacs. And because i was more curious, like what the special was that was on at 2.30 in the morning, but he was dead.
00:22:52
Speaker
Like yeah long dead by then. Yeah. It was something like a rerun. Right. And so I don't know. I don't know what that was all about. Yeah.
00:23:03
Speaker
Yeah, it's you know some special which is odd at 2.30 in the morning to have this new special about somebody who's been gone for a long time. um I love their interaction you know with the the chick and the duck and just all of it. Yes. They've got something, Chandler and Kathy here, I think.
00:23:23
Speaker
Okay, so there was a little cut out whenever they very first start talking. And they realize that, you know, they're both up for the same reason. Right. And then she's like, you know, you're kidding me.
00:23:40
Speaker
Oh, I love him. and then Chandler's like, or, and then they, she says that her parent or her dad used to make her watch reruns of him. And Chandler's like, oh yeah, me too. And then he says, did your dad also make you watch Mr. Universe contest? the idea And she was like,
00:24:02
Speaker
a That's fantastic. I just get such a good sort of vibe between the two of them at this point. um I love it. We do go back to Central Park.
00:24:14
Speaker
Everybody loves Phoebe's raspy voice that she's singing with, and thinking that she sounds great. Joey and Kathy are off to buy hamsters for her medical research job that she does. It's so nice that the medical field is taking care sick hamsters.
00:24:33
Speaker
Poor old Phoebe, naive Phoebe. But yeah i'm just even if Chandler wasn't in the picture, not feeling any chemistry between Kathy and Joey really at this point.
00:24:47
Speaker
ah Right. They're just kind dating. Rachel calls Chandler out for loving Kathy at this point. You love her. um And everyone starts teasing him and... um yeah i kind of like ross's line there kind of you know sticking up for him and then that's because he's so in love so so in love yes and that made me laugh like and that was the timing of that was so silly it was so well done and then this is followed immediately by the it's so awkward this moment with monica like hugging and kissing herself it's just
00:25:25
Speaker
Staring. Yeah. and so She's got to be so embarrassed when she turns around. Gunther's just, yeah. yeah that Kind of horrified. We go up to the girl's apartment. Phoebe is trying to write depressing stuff, but she can't, she can't think of anything bad that's happened to her. sure yeah Yeah. Lovely world that she lives in.
00:25:51
Speaker
But don't worry, she's got her friends to remind her. Yeah, all the bad things. um Ross comes in and he's just yelling about Amanda, but Rachel's not there.
00:26:03
Speaker
um monica Monica's over this, that you know are rapidly getting over this, bickering back and forth between the two of them. um Rachel then comes in, we meet Josh, this temporary boyfriend, who knows where they met.
00:26:19
Speaker
I was curious about that too, because he's obviously still in college and, you know, like, and just sketchy as heck. Oh, yeah.
00:26:31
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Just, you I mean, obviously she's been just consumed with this Ross thing and just latched onto the first guy she saw, I think, to try and make Ross jealous, somebody younger and whatever. Yeah. Yeah.
00:26:46
Speaker
He's hoping to make the varsity team, the soccer team, um we find out. And then Ross and Rachel, they just start bickering going back and forth. I was going to ask you, the kids and you brought it up in bamboozled, the Commodore 64. Have we talked about the first game system you ever had?
00:27:07
Speaker
Have we talked about that? We might have. Because I had the Atari system. Like the big, with the wood paneling and the cartridges in. And you had like the long, with like the joystick and the number pad. Yeah, my my friend Kenneth Graham had one of those. We'd go over and play the Atari at his house. I felt so fancy. And then whenever I was in fifth grade, I won a ah Nintendo.
00:27:34
Speaker
like in a Very nice. windowdo Yes, I won it at school. I don't remember what kind of drawing it was, but I won it. and it was the cool set that came with duck hunt and the gun oh yeah i do remember a bit of duck hunt yes oh so fancy that dog laughed at me all the time yes it was i went went to a well went to my friend alice durrant they had one so we played duck hunter at her house had different friends with different consoles ah there you go yes that's the way to do it yes
00:28:12
Speaker
yes um okay in and what is okay so i have to ask because i knew the answer to the question but is a commodore 64 is that a gaming console i think you're in my head it was like almost like a ah pc but one you played games on Yeah, okay, that's what I was thinking. Yeah, like it came with a yeah screen and a keyboard.
00:28:45
Speaker
But yeah think it was more for games, you know, I think. um That's how the wide picture, picture animal. Okay, just a quick Google search.
00:28:57
Speaker
Okay, um... August 1982, 8-bit home computer widely recognized by Guinness World Records as the best single best-selling desktop computer model of all time.
00:29:12
Speaker
That's just wild to think about, like in this day and age. Yeah. Yeah. But it's, yeah, it looks like it's a monitor, a hard drive, and a keyboard. You got your floppy disk.
00:29:26
Speaker
Right. And your ah joystick. Is it crazy to think that I think an iPhone, like just a base and a standard iPhone 64 bit, um you know, just the operating system. Yeah, you know that's crazy.
00:29:40
Speaker
Yeah, so it's eight times as powerful as that, you know, big box that would take up your desk. Yeah, just just kind of wild to think about. um Yeah, never did have a Commodore. I had other game systems. I wanted I think my first was the Game Gear. That was the I can't remember if I got that first. That's Sonic the Hedgehog made by Sega.
00:30:05
Speaker
Oh, i say it was a Sega. I never owned a Sega. And then the first Sega was the Master System, which was another 8-bit system. it was the It was the first Sega one that would plug in, and it came with Sonic the Hedgehog built into it.
00:30:26
Speaker
Oh, so fancy. And then, yeah, that was it. Those were really the two that I owned. I'd like to get something just to play Mario Kart. I don't have a gaming console of any sort, but I do like Mario Kart. That's a ton of fun.
00:30:41
Speaker
Okay. Okay. So we have a Switch, and I love Mario Kart, love Mario Party. i never played it okay oh you would love i i say that i feel like people are crazy if they don't love mario party okay but it's like a game board but it's a video game like and you have all these mini games and you challenge each other it's so fun it's great you will have to invite us over sometime yeah mario party it up
00:31:14
Speaker
Yes, i think that's a great idea. We'll do it. And what something we will not do is descend into chaos and fighting like Ross and Rachel do at this point and give each other the the two fist bumps that makes its debut.
00:31:28
Speaker
Iconic. iconic iconic i'm just saying because that right there is used i mean hesitate to say daily but i mean multiple times a week that's a lot without a doubt um yes ross goes okay go ahead i wondered this because like my brother and and i are 10 years apart and so there weren't really opportunity I I don't know we didn't necessarily gang up together to hide things from our parents or anything like that like that wasn't like there wasn't a fort or a unity like that right okay but what about with you and your sisters did y'all have like something that you know because like the whole reason that that and it made me laugh because she was like and I cried because I realized I was cooler than my older brother
00:32:24
Speaker
but um But, you know, something like something secret or or that was just y'all. I don't think so. I've never really thought this through. my so I've got two older sisters, three years and six years older.
00:32:41
Speaker
I don't think we did, really. Like, we've always gotten along. um but Yeah, I don't think we really did. Maybe it's not too late. Maybe.
00:32:53
Speaker
Or maybe your sisters did against you. It's very possible. I mean, I don't know. i don't know how multiple sibling situations work like that.
00:33:06
Speaker
yeah you know i might need to inquire. Yeah. yeah Because like I think about... um I don't know. adults... so hi matt i Al, I apparently just feel like chatting with you today. Chat away. Chat away. But my brother and i and I, guess as adults, we're more like that now than we were whenever we were kids.
00:33:32
Speaker
Right? Right. ah but And we went and rode the new roller coaster yesterday. Yes. Yes. Local people will know in Arlington there's a new roller coaster. Yes.
00:33:46
Speaker
And it broke six world records. That's pretty impressive. It's my favorite. But what I learned about Al is Al is nine Not a rollercoaster person.
00:33:58
Speaker
Yeah, no, I've been on a couple and you know i wouldn't say they

Roller Coasters: Love or Fear?

00:34:03
Speaker
terrify me. they I would have no issue if they did. But I'm missing, A, they make my they make my stomach hurt, the ups and downs. And then I'm also just missing that genetic component that gets like a thrill from that stuff.
00:34:17
Speaker
Yeah. Like, I just don't enjoy it. Like, it just it doesn't, it's like, ah I would rather go slow in an old classic car than than like fast. you know in a sports car like and i'm not sure why that is don't know what that says about me but speed and big drops and stuff nah it's just it's just not something i enjoy but more power to all the people that love it i will i will vacate my seat on the roller coaster for you and i'll wait with the kids at the bottom like you go and have fun there you go well it's It is awesome. Man, it's awesome.
00:34:56
Speaker
Yeah. yeah What's not awesome? Phoebe's about to lose her raspy voice. She coughs or sneezes or something and it's gone. and Very upset about this. Very upset. She's going back to her normal voice.

Ross's Babysitting Mishap

00:35:10
Speaker
um We go over to Amanda's apartment now. This is where Ross and Ben arrive with a bottle of wine in hand. um And to say that Ross has misread the situation is an understatement. he is He is her babysitter and she is going out with it. She's been trying to go out with this guy for a month and he is looking after Ben and Tommy and he better have his wine after the kids have gone to bed.
00:35:38
Speaker
Right, right. But don't worry. She'll do it. She'll or she hopes she can do the same for him. sometimes Yes. pearl at Poor old Ross. I just have to laugh like because of the way they've been bickering back and forth. I find this very funny. um So we then go back out to the street. Chandler is buying a newspaper. it's quite a famous scene. i think this one. um i've got here in my notes the theme to the mod the mod is it mod or mob mod that's what i've got written down but also yet theme to the mod squad and he starts chasing kathy through the streets she has varsity on her shirt and i also noted how many dogs he got caught up in because i thought you might ask me that oh wow yeah there are five dogs he gets caught up in and then gets what does he get all over his shirt
00:36:32
Speaker
Do you remember? Mustard indeed. Mustard. Yeah, it's it's quite a... it Certainly in my head, it's a well-known scene. It's something a bit different. Chandler's lost his mind. i mean, jumping on top of cars and on top of the taxis. I mean, just... Chaos.
00:36:50
Speaker
Chaos indeed. and but he eventually manages to leap in front of Kathy just to say, hey... and then off she goes uh jogging through the village and he's just left so disgusted yeah disheve you phase yeah what did they just do like golly what was i doing um we i i've got an important question for you in this next scene the girl's apartment um Ross got tipped $10. Monica's drinking a harp lager, I noticed. It was kind of hidden, but recognize the um
00:37:30
Speaker
the vessel that the drink was in. interesting. Okay. A cool sharp harp was the logo back in the day on in on the adverts on television. But this one, I wanted to ask you, because you have two boys, and I just thought you might know the answer to this. If you have soaking wet hair and you hang out at the window, you're not going to get a cold, right? No. Because it's a virus.
00:37:54
Speaker
Correct. Right. Okay. So that's just yeah like a myth. Oh, don't outside with wet hair. Yet another old wives tale. Like, that's not how science works.
00:38:06
Speaker
That's not how your immune system works. that I think that's, yeah, because my mom used to always ah say that, you know like you don't go outside with your wet hair and you and Because ah you can get sick.
00:38:22
Speaker
But yeah that's not how that works. I didn't think so. But rather than Google, I thought we'd have that discussion ah on air. um Chandler comes in and he admits he's in love with Kathy. There's nothing he can do about it. um And then Monica ends up with Phoebe's cold. And Phoebe is rather jealous and rather upset about this. And then Disgusting. Disgusting.
00:38:48
Speaker
Yeah. dis Disgusting. Is this with the soup? Is that? Okay, wait. Oh, no. She comes back later and then that's where she's like, oh. Yeah. I've got some thoughts about that scene as you do, evidently. Now, before that, Joey comes in with Kathy and they were talking about Chandler what falling asleep with his head in the toilet. Again, kind of putting Chandler down. Yes.
00:39:12
Speaker
Yeah. And then, okay, there's another cut scene right here. And it's... um and Because they walk in and if you notice, they've got, or Joey's carrying something.
00:39:26
Speaker
But like, it just kind of moves on to the next thing. Well, they come in and then they're like, oh, hey, what did y'all get? Right. And she goes, or maybe kathy Kathy's the one with it. And she's like, we got Die Hard.
00:39:44
Speaker
And they were like, oh, and she's like, yeah, I let Joey pick. And then she says that, um you know, a lot of guys would be like, oh, Die Hard versus the English patient. And um they would ah they would pick the English patient because they want to impress me. and Oh, yes, this is one of my favorites.
00:40:06
Speaker
Right. And she's like, but not Joey. Not Joey. So there's like a little hole right there. And I was like, that kind of sucks because on my episode, and then I went back and I looked at the script and I was like, that sucks that that's not there because it kind of shows that there's,
00:40:27
Speaker
there's a Yeah, not quite as good as it seems. Right, exactly. It kind of cuts a little hole in there, pokes a little hole in there.

Chandler's Nightclub Dilemma

00:40:37
Speaker
Interesting.
00:40:39
Speaker
yeah um We go over to the boys' apartment, Chandler's playing hide-and-seek with the chick and the duck. which I just love. But this is where Joey comes in. He kind of confronts Chandler. He invites Chandler for dinner, but he ate yesterday. He's going to time right through the week. And Joey's like, what's the deal? You know, I tried with Janice. um You can always pretend to like Kathy and Chandler kind of kind of goes along with it. um We nip right back across the hall and Rachel comes in kissing Joshua but kind of shoves him away when she realizes Ross isn't there.
00:41:15
Speaker
um They're going to be going to a party later and this is when Rachel realizes he's been stealing stealing money from her. I think Monica or Phoebe, somebody almost tries to defend it like, oh, so he stole a few dollars.
00:41:30
Speaker
Or something. I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but $1 is too many to be taking out of somebody's purse. Is that then? didn't think so. Because like right after that, um when ah Phoebe walks in with the soup, and she's like, I saw Josh, he looks so good in your leather jacket.
00:41:51
Speaker
And so then Rachel leaves. And then that's whenever... Yes. Yes. So Kate paid a lot of attention to this scene. The first thing I noticed was it's very unlike Monica, who's thrown tissues all over the floor. Yeah, she would never. She would never do that. But ah Kate really paid attention to the fact that Phoebe very deliberately licked the other side of the soup that Monica was drinking from. interesting. The actresses were careful. um I didn't catch that because, yeah, it just gave me the ick that, you know, Phoebe is determined to get the the raspy voice back.
00:42:33
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, very much gave me ick. We go to the club. I don't think we ever... Do we ever find out the name of this nightclub? I don't think we do No, we don't. And I was so confused because I was like, I thought they were going to get dinner. Yeah. But...
00:42:52
Speaker
that was definitely like a nightclub right so i don't know some something happened there um chandler's so awkward as kathy and joey are kind of close with each other i do love the bit about the fishnet stockings reminding him of his father poor old traumatized chandler um Kathy's really trying. She's like, I could say I've got pretty friends and I've got ugly ones too or something. yeah He's just knocking it back. um
00:43:25
Speaker
Joey then kind of confronts Chandler. He's like, basically, what the hell's going on? Pretend to like her even if you don't. And Chandler kind of opens up, doesn't he, about his true feelings for Kathy.
00:43:36
Speaker
And Joey's like, well, that's pretty good. You you might want to tone it down to touch. He does yeah doesn't really realize what a That he's being truthful. Yeah. yeah um I feel for Chandler a lot in

Monica's Frustration with Ross and Rachel

00:43:52
Speaker
this moment. here Yeah. Because it was to me, and like we talked about, it was very clear from the beginning that ah he and Kathy had a connection of some sort. um We go back up to the girls' apartment. Ross comes in bragging about Amanda. Poor old Monica still has a cold. And this is where Ross and Rachel really descends into the full-blown argument. And Monica has had it.
00:44:17
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. and she's sick. And so she's already kind of grumpy. Yeah. Yeah. And she needs her cough drops.
00:44:28
Speaker
She does. Just give me the cough drops. um Although I don't know she actually coughed, which is it. Now I'm thinking, we hear her sneeze and sniffle. I don't know she coughs. Well, maybe because, maybe that's why she needed them.
00:44:40
Speaker
That's very good point. She didn't. yeah indeed um monica yells at both of them and just spills the truth about both of their situations um so rachel then does the double fist bump thing and ross gives it the it's like a dinosaur neck i don't know what i don't know what that was that was the epic comeback apparently um Yeah. And then we go before the end credits. We end in Central Park. Phoebe is singing. Gunther sneezes. And Phoebe, in a moment of unbridled, not passion, just wanted to get sick again, goes and kisses him.
00:45:22
Speaker
and yeah And it's going to stick with Gunther. Gunther. It is. Gunther's going to have some ah ah rebuilding to do with Rachel in his mind, which will be coming up.

Phoebe's Voice and Gunther's Apology

00:45:35
Speaker
um But we end in the boys' apartment. Chandler's trying to watch TV. Kathy and Joey are just, that they're being loud. Sorry, that's not, this isn't the end scene. We've got a couple more to go. And Chandler turns the volume up and this is where Joey comes out with the dartboard. He's wearing nothing but dartboard. Oh, does he have one sock? And one sock. He's wearing his right sock. It's a calf sock and it's black.
00:46:03
Speaker
i know You thought that question was coming. Yes. I did um Chandler's watching an old black and white B movie called Attack of the 50-Foot Woman.
00:46:16
Speaker
How do you know that? ah Some Google. I got i looked it up. oh Wow. Released in 1958. I didn't even notice that we saw...
00:46:31
Speaker
is like the screen or anything on it huh yeah we see that and that that's what he was watching um and this is where he ends up going over to the ah the girls apartment um Chandler does with his pillow and blanket and all of that his big purple pillow Yes, which I omitted. And yeah, it's not in the next episode. It's in this one. We end in Central Park. Phoebe is singing about a paper mache man, which i kind of I was kind of digging that song.
00:47:03
Speaker
yeah know kind I want to hear more about ah pepper people and paper-mashing men. um She has a whole repertoire. And she says, thank you, my baby. Yes, it's so good. Oh, my God. It's so good.
00:47:17
Speaker
And this is where Gunther apologizes to Rachel for Phoebe Kissick. She is beyond confused as to what in the world is happening. But Gunther and his feelings, his undying, unrequented love for Rachel um has put him in a place where he feels he needs to apologize.
00:47:38
Speaker
um and that's how we kind of sum this one up I feel like I went through it kind of quickly it's just a cook because we're getting ready for the match I hope I didn't rush through this one too quickly I don't think so I don't think it's probably good yeah I think so yep the US match is kicking off shortly but um let's see Gunther Central Park I don't think this one's too easy who are you going to go with this week So I had a hard time.
00:48:11
Speaker
Yeah. I had a hard time. But I ended up going with Chandler because right he is chaotic. And you saw him being funny and sad and depressed and desperate and frustrated and all the different things.
00:48:25
Speaker
And so I feel like because of that, he won. Yeah, that was ah that was my reasoning exactly, was it was more Matthew Perry than Chandler, just seeing all these different sides of him and all these different, all the just incredible actor. um So I enjoy seeing all the different sides of Chandler.
00:48:46
Speaker
um All right, what can we measure in this week, do you think? Dartboards? it had that's a classic it has to be how many dartboards are we giving this episode okay so i feel like it's a little low but it was six and a half right uh you know what mine was a seven and i felt like i was being perhaps a little generous it's not a great episode so i had a seven and i was like i just
00:49:19
Speaker
ah Thinking about ones that are a seven and I feel good like, yeah, it's a seven. like I like those better. Yeah, it's it's it's not not a great one for me. um It's the setup of the Kathy storyline that goes on for a couple of episodes.
00:49:39
Speaker
The Ross and Rachel bickering back and forth for me seems to have come out of nowhere. Maybe I've forgotten something happened. No, but And that's that's what I was saying at the beginning is that I feel like these last few episodes I've scored really high and I've really enjoyed them and everything, but they've also been very, very Ross-like.
00:50:01
Speaker
Yes. Yes. And so, i I mean, I am not saying that it is tied directly to the inclusion of Right. But there might be something that. There might be something there. Well, next week, we will be seeing more of Ross in next

Wrap-Up and Tease for Next Episode

00:50:18
Speaker
week's episode. It is the one with the dirty girl.
00:50:22
Speaker
Next week. yeah So we'll definitely get more of a storyline there. Any final thoughts? iss There's some funny stuff. Yes, there is. And I actually like this next one a whole lot. But yeah, yeah I hate on this one.
00:50:38
Speaker
ah Final thoughts. USA. Go USA. That's right. yeah Hopefully when this comes out Thursday morning, we are celebrating a USA victory over Belgium.
00:50:50
Speaker
And yes, Boo Ross indeed. I'm right there with you. right. Well, that wraps up this one. We'll be back next week, as we said, with the one with the dirty girl. But as always, thank you everybody for tuning in to the Purple Door podcast.
