Summer Refresh: Interpreting Bathroom Dreams

Today’s episode of the Summer Refresh series covers one of the most common (though sometimes uncomfortable to share) dreams. That’s right, we’re talking about bathroom dreams. If you’ve had dreams of going to the bathroom or trying to find a bathroom, you are not alone! Previously aired in Episode 11 of Season 1, this common dream is broken down and shame around it is eliminated…or should we say, flushed? Bathroom dreams are valuable and are meant to encourage us regarding what God is doing in our lives.

Symbolism of Bathrooms in Dreams

Have you had a dream lately that takes place primarily in a bathroom? Or have you been looking for a bathroom in your dream? Have you been using a bathroom in your dream? Don't worry, this is another one of those common dreams. And so today's episode is for you bathroom dreamers. And if you have yet to dream of a bathroom, I pretty much guarantee you you will at some point, because this is actually a pivotal place and a pivotal conversation for us to be having when we're talking about dreams. It's actually really profound. So welcome to Episode 11, all about the bathroom. I know some of you might feel a little uncomfortable talking about this, but I feel great. And we are going after truth in our dreams. So let's just be real about what we're dreaming about. And because things are mostly symbolic,

We don't have to worry. We don't have to worry that something is going to shame us or expose us because God is really kind and anything he shows us is between us and God. And it's really just for our benefit and so that we understand what's actually happening in our life. So don't be afraid. I'm going to say the word toilet. I might even use the word flush and poop. Exploring Symbolism of Number 11

Actually, I would say this is one of the most commonly seen numbers, at least amongst my friends and mine community. I feel like I hear people talk about seeing 11s or 1111 or 1111 all the time. I do see those numbers often too in dreams or every time I look at the clock, I see an 11 or a 111. And I think that it is because we're in a corporate season where 11 is significant because 11s typically represent transition. 11s typically represent transition. So this could be speaking to a season of transition or a moment of transition or a transitional conversation, whatever the context is. But what I love is I've also read that 11 can be associated with the revelation that will help transition us into something new. So 11 can also speak to revelation.

I've heard it interpreted this way because Joseph, famous Joseph from the Old Testament, from Genesis was the 11th son of Jacob. And if you know anything about the story of Joseph, one of my favorites, he was really gifted in Revelation. He was having prophetic dreams as a kid that got him into some trouble, but he ended up actually receiving revelation over some key people's dreams later in his life that brought great freedom and great purpose and helped him to fulfill his destiny. So one of the things that we think of when we think about Joseph is revelation. He was the 11th son. This is a part of why 11 can also represent revelation.

Again, whatever the Holy Spirit is really revealing to you that 11 means, that's what it means. But you're going to typically see it represent transition or the revelation associated with transition.
Interpreting Bathroom Dreams

And because I always find meaning in this, and I know God speaks through this, I think talking about bathrooms today is actually going to be really pivotal and really transitional for some of you. These are the kind of dreams that we have and we're like, that was weird. I'm going to toss that. I don't need to sit with that anymore. That was probably just me processing something. But it's actually speaking into something that God is trying to do in our life or is doing in our lives.

And so I'm gonna take that weird symbol that we wanna throw out and I'm gonna bring it into relevance because it is relevant where you go through a spiritual cleansing. This can mean a couple things. This can mean the healing of emotional pain. This can mean the cleansing of spiritual toxins. So depending on the context, depending on what's going on in your life, God is speaking to you being in a time or in a season of going through healing, or Him doing some healing in your life, or Him doing some cleansing or spiritual cleansing in your life, or the need for that.

If we're specifically talking about a toilet, like you're experiencing using a toilet. Yep. See, I told you I'd use that word. Let's think about what that would speak to. That's a place where you're actually releasing waste and releasing toxins from inside of you. This is where we dispose of waste, right? And we allow the Lord to flush it forever. This could look like, I said before, releasing emotional pain from past experiences, releasing bitterness through forgiveness, or coming out of agreement with negative mindsets or beliefs that God is showing you. But this is indicating an internal cleansing, right? So something that's inside of you that's not supposed to be there, that needs to be released, that is not benefiting you, is coming out.

Conversely, if we're talking about the shower or the sink, this is most likely speaking to something that's on you that needs to come off. Okay, that's different. So this could be where God is actually supernaturally cleansing you, like removing spiritual toxins and emotional dirt that you've accumulated through your day or from somehow on the outside. So this is the difference between inside cleansing and outside cleansing. So whatever you're seeing in your dream is going to indicate which area. Is it internal? Is it external? And you get to be the one to go to God and say, what are you speaking to here? What is it that I actually need to receive cleansing from?

If we're gonna get more specific, let's even talk about a sink versus a shower. So oftentimes, if it's a cleansing and a shower, this is probably speaking to a more thorough cleaning. Think about it. You're not just washing your hands, right? You're doing a cleansing of your whole body. So this might be speaking to a more thorough cleaning. But the hands and the sink is mostly like you're washing your hands of something. You know that term, like we're washing our hands of something. And oftentimes, this is going to be removing involvement.

in a situation or removing responsibility over something. I actually have a cool dream, just a recent one about this.

And let me just say as a caveat, I have a lot of bathroom dreams. I'm not ashamed about it. I am always seeking God for more cleansing and more healing. And so I'm not worried when I see bathroom dreams. I know that this is just an indicator that he's working in me and that I'm actually open to what's happening. Oftentimes I'll have to ask, okay, what specifically is being cleansed right now? You know, because I'm interested and I want to know, but this is not uncommon. So don't, don't be afraid. I have them all the time too. The recent dream that I had was that I couldn't get to the sink. I couldn't get there. There was all of these like little bees around the sink in my dream and I was trying to get to the sink and I couldn't. It was like they were blocking me. And this was at a time that I i was definitely experiencing a lot of spiritual warfare and stuff coming up inside of me that I did not know if it was mine or if it wasn't mine.

You know what I'm saying? Does this resonate with anybody? Sometimes what we're experiencing and feeling is in ours, especially if you are wired sensitively as and really empathetic or really discerning, or God has called you to be an intercessor, you are ah often going to feel things that are not yours. I don't have to tell you who you are, because even as I'm saying this, you're like, Oh my gosh, that's me. Thank you for saying that. So this is a great indicator. and Is it, is it toilet or is it shower or hands? Is it internal? Is it external? So I knew in this moment, what I was experiencing around me, what was experiencing coming up inside of me, that I was like, God, is there something I need to deal with here? Is there something in my own heart that's going on? Because I want to know, I want to see.

This dream showed me, you know, this is external. We need to wash your hands of this. But there are all these little attacks coming at you that are making you think that it's something internal and it's actually keeping you from coming and just washing your hands of this whole thing. And let me just tell you. A lot of what was coming up, a lot of what I was sensing, a lot of what was being told to me was actually stuff that wasn't my responsibility, but that could easily feel like my responsibility because it was, they were issues that, that I care about that were coming up. I'm having dreams about them. People are telling me about them. And it would be easy for me to be like, Oh, I need to do something about that. I need to say something to this person, or I need to pray more into this, or there's some responsibility that's mine.

And because I couldn't quite discern what was happening, I think that that was coming on me more, and I just needed to get washed off. I needed something that's coming at me from the external to be released, to be supernaturally washed off by the Holy Spirit, and I needed to just release my involvement and my responsibility. Like, this isn't actually in your hands. So when I actually got the revelation and the interpretation of that dream, it was like, ah, thank God, I was actually really praying into what do I do about this? I don't know what's happening. Is there something inside of me that I have to deal with? But that was a really good indicator of that it was external. And it was simple. It wasn't a full body shower that needed to happen. I just needed to wash my hands. And there were these annoying little attacks that were all around trying to keep me from even knowing that I just had to go wash my hands. Simple as that.

Of course, there are much more elaborate dreams in the bathroom, and I've had many, much many more elaborate dreams. But that's just an example of that. So if you're having bathroom dreams, you want to ask yourself some questions because context is everything, right?
Public Bathroom Dreams & Transparency

Where is the bathroom that you're in? Or where's the bathroom that you're looking for? Is it at work? Is it at home? This could be a clue to the area of your life that God is wanting to do a cleansing or that you're going in for some healing. Is it a public bathroom? That one I hear from people a lot. Like, it's really weird. I need to go to the bathroom and I'm looking in these public bathrooms. Or I find a bathroom outdoors, but there's no walls on it and people can see me, right? I can just feel it. Some of you are like, yes, I've had that dream. Well, you're not alone.

And this can really speak to the fact that other people are going to observe your healing and your cleansing. And that's okay. That's actually really okay. I would even say it's a good thing. I don't know how many of you have listened to episode three. This is what I'm talking about metaphor a lot in symbolism. And in that one, I bring up another common dream, which is the naked dreams. And the naked dreams feel so exposing and feel so shameful sometimes and like, Oh gosh, why did I have a dream? That was weird. Why did that person see me naked? Why was I in that place naked? But what I revealed in that episode was that naked dreams really just point to an area of our life where God is asking us to be transparent and authentic.

And I spoke to how powerful it is for other people to see us being real and to see us sharing ourselves with them and having a real connection and being honest about what we're going through and the cleansing that we're going through. So in the same way, if you're in a public restroom and people can see that you're using the restroom, this isn't something to shame you or make you feel afraid. This is speaking to the the power. that it will actually have for others to be brought into your process of cleansing, being brought into your process of healing. Let others see it. Because let's be real, we're all going through cleansing and healing. Maybe some of us are trying not to, but it's actually the most healthy and beautiful thing we can do is to just yield into that.

Maybe you're having a bathroom dream where you need to go and you're looking for one and you can't find one. Or you need to go and you find one but you can't go because there's people around or there's some other hindrance. And I would say, obviously, first and foremost, ask the Holy Spirit what He's showing you in that dream. But I would say that maybe there's a need for a healing or a cleansing that's happening that maybe you're afraid of letting other people see. And so because it's in a public place, you're like, no, I can't go here. I won't go here. Maybe that's actually speaking

you not being afraid of other people seeing the process that you're going through because it is so healing even for others to see us go through these processes and for us to be real about it. Now I'm not talking about finding a perfect stranger and telling them your life story and giving them all the deep details of your life. That's not wise either. That's not a smart boundary. We're not talking about like dumping on someone else. But we're talking about, hey, other people are going to observe this process of healing and cleansing for you. And actually God is showing you that it's it's His hand that's allowing this to happen. And it's a really good thing. You don't need to be afraid of it. You don't need to be afraid of it.

Okay, well, I hope that that was helpful for you today. I'm going to just leave it there. There's so much I could go after in this arena, but I want to hear what your bathroom dreams are like. I want to hear if you start having more bathroom dreams. And honestly, that just makes me excited because it just shows a beautiful season or a time of healing and cleansing that God is bringing you through. And I just encourage you and challenge you even. Yes, I challenge you. The next time you have a dream where you think, oh, I'm not going to write that down because that's just nothing. That's just silly. That was just me in a bathroom. That was me just being stressed out trying to find a bathroom in a crowded city or some other mundane everyday kind of activity that seems a little bit

blah, or maybe is a little bit uncomfortable to talk about. I dare you, I just dare you to write it down and to not judge it and to actually bring it in for interpretation to see what God wants to show you. These kinds of dreams can be the linchpin. They can be what's holding everything together at times and can really be revealing This is what's happening around you. I'm actually helping name what you're going through in this turmoil, why you're in a moment of this. Why does it all of a sudden feel like all of this past emotion is coming back up? It is God's kindness to say, hey, this is a cleansing, and now you have perspective on that. So you're not scared that you're, you know, going through all of this same trauma again, and that you haven't done any healing in the past. This is just another season of that. Let him show you, let him name what's happening.

Let him bring you into a bathroom time. Let him bring you in to a cleansing time. We are courageous. We are courageous for even going into our dreams wanting to know what they mean. And this is another area that you just get to be courageous. So there
