Am I Just Processing My Day In My Dreams?

Have you ever dreamt about something that happened during your day and written it off as nothing? Have you been told that this happens solely because your mind is processing the day? This is one of the most common questions about dreams!
While we do process our day while asleep at times, we have found that OFTEN, God is in the midst of those dreams, using the natural occurrences from your day and the people you interacted with to communicate something to you in language you can understand. Becoming underwater breathers requires us to let go of fleshly wisdom or advice and delve into the mysterious language of God and the ways of His Kingdom! We have to become like little children, humble and curious, to enter the Kingdom of God. - Matthew 18:3
In this episode, Margaux shares an example of this playing out, in a dream from one of the membership dreamers.

hello. This is episode 18 of season three. My name is Margo. I'm the host of Breathing Underwater. Do you know why i named this podcast Breathing Underwater?

Well, some of you who've been following from the beginning know because I do talk about this periodically. But for those of you who are new or maybe haven't heard those episodes yet, I'm going to give you a quick refresher because it relates to what we're going to go into today.

For many years, I would have dreams where I was deep underwater, maybe walking on the bottom of the sea or just deep in dark water of a lake, or I would find myself falling into a river or something like that.

And I would have this moment where I was holding my breath and then i would start to breathe and realize, my gosh, I

can breathe underwater. This is so cool. Well, didn't really think anything of it until years later when i was surrounded by people who were always talking about their flying dreams. And I'm thinking, that is so cool.

There's so much symbolism and flying dreams and you know being elevated in the spirit and being able to see but all the spiritual things and... I just felt like, God, why why don't I have flying dreams?

And he brought to my attention, you have breathing underwater dreams. And it's not less than, it's actually kind of similar, just really different imagery. To breathe underwater, to be in the deep, deep waters and to be exploring and to be being able to breathe under there is speaking about my gift.

to go deep in the spirit and how to breathe down there is actually second nature to me and how I'm called to bring other people into the deep things of God, the places where it feels a little mysterious and dark and you don't know what you're going to find down there. And it feels like really foreign at times. Like the the deep water is not our most innate thing.

atmosphere to live in, right? Like we have to have gear to do that in the natural. But I would say in the spiritual, it is the most natural place for us. We just have to relearn that.
Dreams as Spiritual Messages

So to me, breathing underwater is learning how to relate with God in His way, learning the deep things of the Spirit, learning His language, learning learning to be spirit beings and Just as much as we are physical beings, and oftentimes that means having to let go of fleshly understanding and going after the wisdom of God.

This is what I love. This is what you are invited into. This is what we explore and talk about when we're talking about dream interpretation and scott and God's voice and intercession and discernment and the spirit realm. Those are all conversations we're having here on this podcast because it matters.

We are interacting with the spirit realm all the time, whether we know it or not. And God wants us to become wise in His ways. Not to mention, he's speaking to us in our dreams every single night.

And if we're not learning his language, we're going to miss it. And that is something I think we all long for more than anything else is to hear God's voice and to know it. And we are created to hear his voice.

So this is something that I want to continue to grow in myself because it's there's always more to learn. I am always in a learning curve, but also invite other people into to learn with me.

One of the things that people ask me about the most is what if I have a dream about something that actually happened earlier in that day? What if I was out doing something and then I dreamt about it that night?

Or what if I was watching a movie and then ah scene from that movie played out in my dream or those characters came into my dream? Does that still mean it's a God dream? Or is that just my mind processing my day?

I think it's a really good question. I think firstly, we have been taught that that's just our mind processing and that's what happens when we're sleeping, which is not untrue. Our mind does process and does file things away.

However, we are also spirit beings and we when we are connected to the Holy Spirit and we're in relationship with Jesus and we have given him our lives, He loves to come and speak to us while we're awake, while we're asleep.

He's always taking advantage of the time to be close to us. And if we read the Bible, we see that people were having dreams
Childlike Humility and Divine Wisdom

since the beginning. This is not a new thing. God has spoken to people through dreams so always.

And this is something that he's doing now. Now, because we've been taught that it's just our mind processing or The imagery we're seeing is really mundane or kind of everyday.

Or maybe the opposite. It's weird and bizarre and things are happening that just feel obscure. Like why is that dinosaur on roller skates throwing that spear into the ocean?

Okay. Okay. I mean, I just made that up, but that's how weird dreams are. The amount of times people are like, okay, I had a dream. It's really weird. I hear that all the time. And I'm usually thinking, yep, dreams are weird.

And because the imagery is so weird, this is also a reason that we think it's probably nonsense.

But when we learn to breathe underwater, one of the things we learn is that God's language is nonsense to those who are wise in their own eyes. Scripture talks about how the spiritually wise can discern the things of the spirit, but those who are not spiritually wise and who are in the flesh think it's foolishness.

And we have a tendency until we learn it to also think fleshly about these things. But Jesus says in Matthew 18 that unless we become like children, we cannot enter the kingdom of heaven.

Wait, what do you mean by that? um I think there's a lot of layers to that. I think there's a lot of interpretations and ways ah to read that scripture and a lot of things God's communicating in that. However, the thing that I feel is poignant now is just pointing out that the kingdom of heaven is upside down.

Things are different than we would normally think. God tells us if someone comes and slaps you on the cheek, give him his other cheek. Okay, that is not something that we would naturally want to do. But in the kingdom, God sees that as the right thing to do. Why? Because his kingdom is upside down and different.

So in order to understand His ways and to recognize what the kingdom is and how to live in it, we have to become like children. And I would say that has to do with humility.

That has to do with curiosity and letting go of our our own wisdom, our own pride of thinking that we already know what everything means. We're right. Everyone else is wrong. I mean, it's so natural for us to feel that way, to be like, oh, ah well, this is what this meant to me. So this is the only way.

It's like, no, that's not true. God god speaks to everyone differently. And we all have different opinions and we all have things that we think that we're totally right about. But when we give God space to give us his truth and give us his interpretation for things, then we're opened to relationship and intimacy with him and knowing him better, but also being open to the kingdom of God and all its vastness and all of its spiritual wisdom.

So with this question... Is it just my mind processing when I watched a movie the night before and then that night I dreamt about a scene from that movie? It might be, but I think it's really wise to think that God is in it.

I think it's really wise to recognize that we aren't the wisest and to recognize that God loves to speak to us and that he might be speaking through that very thing and to get curious about that dream. Don't just throw it out.

Get curious. Worst case scenario, it is your mind just processing. God shows you that. No harm done. But what if
God's Communication Through Everyday Events

it's not? What if he's showing you something?

We know that God is intimately acquainted with us and acquainted with our lives. He knows what we think. He knows what we feel. He knows where we were that day. He knows who we talked to.

He knows the questions that are in our heart. He knows the dreams that are in our heart. He knows where we're going. He knows where we've been. is marvelous how well he knows us. And I think sometimes we forget that.

Does God know the movie you watched the night before you had that dream? Absolutely he does. Does he know what those characters might have represented to you? Does he know what that movie might have spoken to your soul?

He absolutely does. And he will use imagery that means something to us to communicate his truths. Let's look at how Jesus used parables all the time to teach people when he was preaching and teaching.

And he used a lot of parables that had to do with farming or cooking and baking. Why? Because that was something that people could relate to. We can still relate that today, but that culture was way more agricultural.

So he was using those pictures to express a spiritual truth. He does the same thing today. that might be why you had dreams about Lord of the Rings.

Listen, I'm using as an example, because i have dreams about Lord of the Rings all the time, because that's one of my favorite movies. And all of those characters really speak to me. And the things that happened in that movie in that story, have a lot of spiritual meaning.

It can be like that with any movie, it can be like that with any story. There's a lot of people who are really anti Harry Potter and I i get it. is pretty dark and I don't know if I would let my kids watch it. Okay. So I am not getting on ah on a political box about this.

However, i know people, myself included, who God has really used that movie to speak to about spiritual things. Does that mean it's wise for everyone to watch that? Absolutely not. There's all kinds of sorcery and witchcraft coming in there, and that's not something we want to dabble in. But God can use those characters and those storylines to speak to us about his spiritual truths.

In the same way that something you did that day can end up in your dream, and God is using that to communicate something to you. I'm going to give you an example here. I'm going to give you one more from scripture, which I love, even though there are endless examples in scripture of something physical that happened during the day that actually has spiritual meaning.

As you become aware of these things, and as you become mature in God, you start to see them more and more. Now, I'm not talking about going through your day, being paranoid and analyzing every little thing, trying to get a message out of it.

No, I'm talking about you just going about your life. And then there's a moment where you just feel the highlighting of the Holy

Spirit. You just sense, oh, there's, there's something here. God's speaking through this natural thing.

I've just recently been in 1 Samuel and there's a part of this story when Samuel, oh God, I love Samuel. He's the best, has to go to Saul and basically tell him the spirit of God is leaving you and he's no longer pleased with you. He's rejected you and he's going to anoint someone else.

Not a fun thing to do. And in this moment, Saul is so desperate when Samuel goes to tell him that he like reaches out as Samuel goes to leave, grabs a hold of his robe and his robe tears.

And in that very moment, Samuel recognized it, that there was a spiritual thing happening in the in that natural occurrence. And he he turned to Saul and said, God has torn the kingdom from you.

And that came from him having his garment torn. Okay. Now Samuel had eyes to see and ears to hear. He was very acquainted with the voice of God and he recognized that natural things can speak of spiritual things.

There are so many examples of this in scripture. I wish I could go through all of them. So how does this pertain to our dreams? Well, I have a friend, a guy who's a part of my membership the other day who came to me and said, Margo, what do you think about this?

During the day, i was on a four wheeler. ah was four wheeling out in in the woods. And I was listening to a podcast from this this guy that I really admire. And then that night, I ended up having a dream with this guy in it that I really admire. And he and I were having a conversation.

We were really friendly and he was giving me advice on books to read and whatnot. And then later in the dream, we were on a four-wheeler. We were out four-wheeling and it was just crazy because that had happened during the day.

So his instinct was to think, oh, well, why did that happen? It probably wasn't anything spiritual. But the fact that he even recognized that as a pattern was the first piece of being spiritually wise going, I'm curious, why did that happen?

Well, when we sat and asked questions, I said, well, this guy that you listened to on the podcast who showed up in your dream, like, what does he mean to you? What does he represent to you? If God is speaking to you symbolically through him, but what would that mean?

What would he represent? And as he thinks about it, he's like, oh, actually, I really love what this guy does. i love the way that he interviews people. I love the way that he interacts with unlikely types of people.

um I actually just really resonate with him. I'm like, okay.

Oftentimes, God is going to show us people that represent something else. It's about something they carry or about something their name means. So in this instance, I'm like, oh, actually, I think this is because you carry something similar to this guy and you're called to something similar.

And that really resonated with him. And then he's like, okay, well, what about the four wheeling? Like that felt really random. In the dream, there was a part where there was there was a road that was paved, but it wasn't fully paved. paved And then he was off four wheeling where there there wasn't a path.

And I said, okay, we'll think about it like that. If we're talking about the context of the conversation with this man and you carry something similar and you're called to do something similar, there's been a road that has been already partially paved.

It's already, someone's already gone before you and done this, but there's a portion of this that is yours to forge. It's like you you're going rogue. You get to go wheel. There's freedom to carve your own path.

There's actually a path for you to forerun, if that makes sense. And as I was giving him this interpretation, and we had other people chiming in on it as well, he's like, that's it. That's totally it. And it opened this whole idea up to him like, oh, I have permission to do this thing that looks like what this guy does because I admire him so much and I'm called to something similar and it doesn't have to look just like his. He's maybe paved the way for me to begin, but it gets to look like me.

And that's what God was speaking to him. And that right there was just the beginning of the conversation. Oh, God wants to talk about this. God brought it up to you in your dream because he wants to talk about this.

He knew that what you had done that day was going to mean something to you, that it was meaningful. There was this physical thing that happened that was also had a spiritual meaning.

Does that make sense? You can't answer me, but let's just pretend, yes, Margo, that makes sense.

I mentioned the Lord of the Rings earlier. i have a lot of dreams about the Lord of the Rings. And I've even had experiences in the natural where I'm doing something, I'm in a situation, and God will show me a scene from the Lord of the Rings to give me context for what is happening in the unseen.

The next time you have a dream like that, that seems just a little too much like what happened during that day, don't be wise in your own eyes. Stop. Write it down. It might be one of those things where you just remember a person that was in your dream and you're like, why did I dream about them?

oh yeah, I dreamed about Katniss from Hunger Games. Well, there's a reason. just right Just write down Katniss. Just remember that you you dreamt about her. Then when you have time, sit with the Lord. God, what does she represent to me?

What is she doing in that movie? What are her gifts? What is she called to? What are you speaking to me about? That might be the only thing you need to remember where you would maybe go, well, I watched that movie last night. So obviously that's why she came up.

No. Let's become like little children. Let's inherit the kingdom. Let's learn to breathe underwater. Let's let go of our wisdom and what we think is going on in our dreams and go with curiosity to God and let Him show us what's happening.
