Dreams of Houses: Commonality and Symbolism

00:00:14
Speaker
This is Breathing Underwater.
00:00:30
Speaker
How many times have you dreamt about being in a house? Being in your house, being in someone else's house, maybe it was your childhood home, maybe it's your grandparents' home, maybe it's a house that you don't know who it belongs to. Dreaming about houses and the setting in dreams being in houses is very, very common.

God's Messages Through Dreams

00:00:50
Speaker
Houses are a common dream symbol that, because they're so common, can also be something that we disregard. If you have a dream about being in your house or doing something in the kitchen, being in the bathroom, or hanging out in the living room, it's a lot easier for that to be so familiar for us to go, oh, whatever, I was probably just processing my day. What what was that? That was nothing.
00:01:11
Speaker
But if you've learned anything from me, you know that God loves to use the foolish things to confound the wise. And this is a very common way that God is speaking to you about something specific. So let's pay more attention. Let's have our eyes open and our ears open when we're dreaming about houses.

Symbolic Meanings of Houses in Scripture

00:01:49
Speaker
So what do houses symbolically mean in our dreams? Now this is really going to depend on the context as always, but if we look in scripture, when scripture talks about houses, I love scriptures about houses actually, because God has been speaking to me a lot about building. So the world the word house comes up a lot. Lately it's been coming up, I've been writing about Solomon and how he wants to build a house for the Lord.
00:02:16
Speaker
What does it mean in that context? He's not building a house with bedrooms and a bathroom and a living room for God to come and live with his family. He's talking about a place for God's presence to dwell, a temple, a church, if you will. So houses can represent church. It can represent the house of God, depending on the context.
00:02:35
Speaker
But then we also read in Proverbs about wisdom building the house. In Psalm 127, one of my favorites, it says, unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it, labor in vain. And this goes on to talk about building a city and getting up early to to build and to work and toil. It goes on to talk about children and family. In this context, it's talking about your family, your life.
00:03:04
Speaker
your livelihood, unless God is actually in charge of building your family, unless God is actually in charge of building your life, then we're laboring in vain.

Interpreting House Dreams: Life and Family

00:03:16
Speaker
So when we're looking at houses in our dreams, we can think through that. Okay, is this talking about my life? Is it talking about someone else's life? Is it talking about my person? Are the rooms of the house actually talking about different rooms inside of me, different spaces in my heart?
00:03:34
Speaker
Is this talking about my family, my family line? Especially if you have had dreams about being in your grandparents' house, that's definitely talking about your family line because that's not your house, right? That is the family house. So what is it showing you about your grandparents' house? What room is it highlighting? The context, the room, your emotions in the dream are all going to be pointing to what God is speaking to you through the house.
00:04:03
Speaker
If you're in your own house, but it looks like a different house than you live in now, okay, is it a new house? Is it a is it a brand new house? Is it one that you've been actually dreaming and praying into? Okay, maybe God's talking to you about a season, a life, a family to come.
00:04:21
Speaker
If it's the house you live in now, awesome. That's probably talking about your life and your family now. If you're in the front yard or you're in the backyard, that can be talking about the the future. If you're in the backyard, that could be talking about the past. Now, this is definitely not across the board. We have to be discerning and ask the Holy Spirit. Sometimes the backyard will be meaning something else. Maybe that it's a side yard. Maybe you're on the front porch and it's talking about giving you vision for the future.

Rooms in Dreams: Symbolism and Significance

00:04:51
Speaker
Let's talk a little bit about what the different rooms in house are gonna mean as well. It's really, really common to have dreams of being in your kitchen. And kitchens can mean many different things, but what we wanna do when we're looking at the different rooms that you're in, in the house, in your dream, is think about what is the function and what is the purpose of that room. So if you're in a kitchen, what do you do in your kitchen? Usually you're preparing food. That's a place where you are,
00:05:21
Speaker
creating meals for you, for your family. And because dreams are mostly metaphorical, this is probably talking about nourishment, but probably something more like spiritual nourishment. So what were you doing in your kitchen? Were you preparing food? Were you eating food? What kind of food was it?
00:05:38
Speaker
Is this talking about the spiritual nourishment and the season God has you in? Talking about milk versus meat, okay? Were you preparing steaks? Okay, that's really different than if you were having a bowl of cereal. Some cereal is typically something that is not as nutritious, but it's something really fast. Okay, look at those details.
00:05:59
Speaker
But I have also found that kitchens can represent my heart. Have you ever heard that the kitchen is the heart of the home? I actually think that's true. It feels like no matter what, when I have people over or when I'm with family, everybody always ends up in the kitchen. People are cooking, people are talking while they're cooking. The kids wanna be where the adults are. Everybody ends up gathering in the kitchen. It is the heart of the home. It's the warm place of the home.
00:06:25
Speaker
So I definitely think through, probably first, when I am seeing myself in a kitchen in my dream, is always just taking place in my heart. Is God showing me something going on in my heart, in my own inner home, in my heart place?
00:06:42
Speaker
Now let's think about a living room. A living room is the most public space in your house. So this could be speaking to the more public areas of your life. Is it your church relationships? Is it relationships with friends? This is the place where people gather.
00:06:59
Speaker
This is also the place I have heard some interpret as um being out and being seen where in a bedroom, you're going to be really intimate. It's going to be hidden in a basement. It's going to be hidden in an attic. It's going to be hidden. What happens in a bathroom is pretty private, but what happens in the living room is much more public. So it could also be talking about something that's more public in your life.
00:07:26
Speaker
I'm going to brush over but bedroom, even though this one's probably pretty clear and self-explanatory. The bedroom is a place of rest, and it's also a place of intimacy. So if you're having dreams about you being in your bedroom and things happening, what's happening in your room? Is it is it talking about the need for rest, your need for rest, someone else's need for rest? Is it a call unto intimacy?
00:07:50
Speaker
Is it speaking about your relationship with your spouse? Is there intimacy happening there and what is the narrative around that? It could easily be talking about your intimacy with God as well.
00:08:04
Speaker
If you maybe live with roommates and everybody's own bedroom is kind of their own little home within a house because that's where you have everything that's not shared, right? It's actually way more personal. That might have a little bit different context. Your bedroom, if you live with roommates, might be speaking more to your life than the entire house. So just pay attention to the people and what's happening. Always context, context, context.
00:08:30
Speaker
Let's talk about the bathroom. So we've had a couple episodes on this podcast about bathroom dreams because they are so common and we are constantly disregarding them, that bathrooms are really key places, especially in dreams. God's talking to you about the need for cleansing, something internally that needs to be flushed out. It's a place where we go through cleansing. It's a place of purification. It might even be a place of healing. It might be a place of deliverance.
00:09:00
Speaker
What are you doing in the bathroom? Are you on the throne? That's going to be really different than if you're in the shower. Because if you're going to the bathroom, that's something internal getting flushed out. If you're in the shower, that's cleansing happening externally. So that might be speaking more about getting cleansed from things in your environment, things that you've picked up, things that you've been around or that affected you from other people.
00:09:25
Speaker
If you're washing your hands, that again is really different. That's an external thing, but that's probably speaking more to, um, repentance so or letting go of something that isn't yours to do. You know, the term I'm washing my hands of this. Okay. I'm actually just going to repent. Say that's not mine. I don't need to carry that. I don't need to hold on to that and move on. It's different than getting a cleansing from your whole body, right?
00:09:51
Speaker
Okay, let's talk about a basement. Basements show up a lot or have shown up a lot in my dreams, especially my grandparents' house and basement because I've been doing really decades worth of generational healing and deliverance. So God has been showing me things from the basement of my grandparents' house, which means this is a place where things are hidden. They're under the surface, things that are old and deep.
00:10:20
Speaker
probably issues of the heart. This is stuff that hasn't been brought to the service, but he is showing me is still going on in my family line or is still affecting me.
00:10:32
Speaker
If this was in my current house right now and there was a basement, I don't actually literally have a basement in my house. I live in California. My house is raised off the ground, but I don't need to get literal about it. I would go, okay, this is talking about something that's under the surface right now, having to do specifically with my life, not necessarily my family line, but something with me.
00:10:53
Speaker
something coming up from the basement, coming up the stairs, you're ah something's being unearthed, something's being brought up from the deep there. And I would say that that would really even be the heart, the deep places of the heart. Similarly, but also sometimes in contrast, is the attic.
00:11:12
Speaker
I have heard um some teachers interpret the attic having to do more with mindsets. Even if you just think the levels of a house, that's the highest place, kind of like our our mind and our brain is at the top of our body. This is the place where God is showing us or exposing mindsets or things that we are believing.
00:11:34
Speaker
But addicts are also a place that stuff is stored and that could still be speaking to things from the past that are hidden, especially if it's, again, your grandparents or your parents' attic or your great-grandparents' attic or your aunt. Okay, this is speaking of the family line and maybe mindset issues that have been inherited or stuff that's been hidden in the family line that God is wanting to reveal.
00:12:00
Speaker
Now, if you have context with an attic that feels totally different, like that's where your bedroom was growing up and you love attics and the symbolism in your dream is speaking differently, then go with that.

Interpreting Dreams: Focus on Symbolism and Context

00:12:11
Speaker
I'm just giving you kind of the basics to get us out of the box of thinking, oh, that was such a normal dream. I was just at my house making a sandwich. I don't need to think about that in the kitchen.
00:12:22
Speaker
Yes, please do. Why was it the kitchen? God was intentionally showing you that. What were you preparing? You were preparing something with bread? What is bread symbolize? Think about it in the Word.
00:12:35
Speaker
Bread can symbolize the word of God. It can symbolize Jesus because we know this the scriptures where he says, I am the bread of life. And we also know that we don't live on bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. So remember to be thinking symbolically and to be paying attention to the details and what you're doing and which room of your house that it is.
00:12:59
Speaker
I hope that this is helpful. This is so incredibly common. I am always interpreting dreams for people having to do with their houses. So I am actually expecting you to email me with questions, tell me what you're learning. Please don't hesitate, especially if it feels a little bit ah confusing what's happening in a dream regarding a house. If it's not your house,
00:13:21
Speaker
And it's someone else's house. It's probably about that person. Or if you don't know the person and it's some random house, look at the other context clues. But remember that houses have to do with the person, the person's life, the person's family. If it's a house that feels more like a church, it's the house of God. He could also be talking about the house of God.
00:13:44
Speaker
Okay, I'm gonna leave you there for today. Another short and sweet one. You guys keep on interpreting, keep diving deeper, keep asking God for more layers to what he's showing in your dreams. Don't hesitate to reach out and ask me questions. Until next time, happy dreaming.
