Podcast Introduction

00:00:06
Richard
Welcome to the Bravo Charlie Club podcast, making you 12 and a half minutes more awesome each week. He's Ben, I'm Richard, let's go. Ben, how you doing this week?
00:00:17
Ben
Doing really well,

Memorable Gifts Discussion

00:00:18
Ben
mate. We're still in the festive hangover and it's got me thinking about gifts and gift giving. What's the best gift you've ever been given, even if it was this year?
00:00:29
Richard
The best gift I've ever been given. You know what, actually it was it was this year and the first time in a long time, we did a split Christmas where where I stayed put and my partner and daughter went away for Christmas
00:00:54
Ben
Oh, there you
00:00:56
Richard
That was really nice. It was just out of the completely out of the blue. working away and just this like thoughtful little touch before everyone headed off.
00:01:03
Ben
go. Yeah.
00:01:04
Richard
Yeah, really appreciated that. How about you, Ben?
00:01:06
Ben
That's cool. i'm I've been very lucky across the journey, but this this year, I mean, um it's right up there. i was given a part ownership of a green sea turtle, which you all know that I love.
00:01:20
Ben
And it's being it's being rehabilitated down in northern New South Wales. And part of the ownership, um, it's not ownership. It's like a care, care package is that you get to go to its release back into, you know, its natural habitat when, when he's fully reed rehabilitated and his name's Navy, which is like the, which is the coolest thing in the world.
00:01:44
Richard
Navy the turtle. So yeah is it is pretty cool.
00:01:48
Ben
and
00:01:49
Richard
Although like half a turtle, that does seem a bit weird. Oh, I think the,
00:01:52
Ben
Yeah, yeah. As long as I get the good half. um Yeah, so that was that's an awesome gift, which I'm looking forward to to being a part of.

Worst Gifts Stories

00:02:02
Ben
Now, without putting the mockers on the worst gift you've been given, what's the worst gift you've ever given someone and you only found out in hindsight?
00:02:12
Richard
i think the the worst, well, it's probably for me, I think the worst gift is no gift. When you, when you think that there's an agreement between everyone with that, we're not gifting.
00:02:21
Ben
yeah.
00:02:25
Richard
And then you, and then you turn up and the, and the, and the, and you're the other guy that went, that stuck to the line and everyone else caved and everyone, what's with all these gifts?
00:02:26
Ben
Yeah. And you're that guy. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. yeah yeah
00:02:35
Richard
what are we what are What are we doing here?
00:02:36
Ben
yeah
00:02:37
Richard
And you're like, yeah, you, you look like you look about, you know,
00:02:39
Ben
You've got to carry a gift card in your pocket, mate.
00:02:41
Richard
Age tall, you're the bad guy.
00:02:44
Ben
Yeah.
00:02:44
Richard
Yeah.
00:02:45
Ben
Yeah.
00:02:45
Richard
um
00:02:46
Ben
Well, I'll be honest. the um In hindsight, I wish I had given no gift when I gave this one. Because this gift that I gave, yeah, it's it's it's a double negative.
00:02:53
Richard
It's negative.
00:02:56
Ben
Yeah. um This gift I gave to my wife on Mother's Day, and it gets raised every every festive period, whether it's birthday, anniversary, this gift gets raised. And I i gave her a useless box.
00:03:13
Ben
um And a useless box is this box with a single switch on the top. And when you flick the switch, an arm comes out and and switches it back off.
00:03:22
Richard
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:03:22
Ben
ah you you see If you haven't seen a video of it, yeah, well, thank you um Apparently, you and I are the only two people on the planet that think this.
00:03:24
Richard
They're cool. Right. Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
00:03:31
Ben
And and every time I've told someone I gave my wife, they're like, ooh, yeah, not very not very well thought out, Ben. Yeah. Anyway, the reason I gave it to her is because I wanted it to be the most useless thing in the house and me to be the second most useless thing.
00:03:47
Ben
But the joke just did not work. She was just like, I've raised your family.
00:03:49
Richard
glad the
00:03:51
Ben
I've given you two beautiful kids. And then this is the...
00:03:55
Richard
This is how you thank me.
00:03:57
Ben
Yeah, yeah. ah I'm not known for good decision-making, and that was really, that was, um you know, Exhibit A, Your Honour. So there you go. Hey, mate, in the Fully Awake project this week, what's the worst mocker you've ever put

Jinxing Experiences

00:04:15
Ben
on something? and And for those who aren't sure of what the term mocker means, it's when you've basically committed something to us it's it's its end. It's you've...
00:04:24
Ben
you've You've ensured it would be it would be no more. So like when someone says they can't lose in in a sporting sense, there's no nothing more certain than that team actually losing after that. What's the worst mocker you've ever put on something, Richard?
00:04:38
Richard
You know what, actually, before before we became a dog family, we'd had other pets, but dogs are pretty different. And I think it was, so it's maybe, so it's going back a couple of years and it's it's dog ice cream.
00:04:54
Richard
And I'm just like, well, that's the stupidest thing in the world. Dog ice cream. Why does it even work?
00:04:58
Ben
Isn't it
00:04:59
Richard
And what do you, why would you go out and you'd get ice cream for your dog? Like the whole thing, I can't unpack it. There's no, you know how you, you have a bit of, ah there's a, you put this like tree in your head, right?
00:05:10
Richard
Which is kind of like all the things that you know and understand. And they sort of sit somewhere in that mental tree and you kind of like dog ice cream. And so you're like, where do I attach that in my, in my cortex? It just makes no sense.
00:05:22
Richard
Didn't understand it at all. Just, Yeah. Wrote it off completely, put the kibosh on it. Then it became dog people. And you're sort of out and, you know, the family's there getting ice cream and're yeah and you're the person. You're like, oh, do you have any eat dog ice cream?
00:05:36
Ben
You're that guy.
00:05:37
Richard
I'm that guy.
00:05:37
Ben
Yeah.
00:05:38
Richard
And sometimes they say yes, you know, sort of like, oh, okay, we'll we'll give Dashie a little bit of dog ice cream, which is, I think it's just like, I don't even know what's in it, lactose-free milk and water or something.
00:05:42
Ben
So you should. Yeah.
00:05:48
Richard
I don't know. He seems to enjoy it. But anyway, yeah.
00:05:50
Ben
a You're asking a non non-dog person. Yeah.
00:05:54
Richard
yeah So dog ice cream does sound probably crazy for you.
00:05:56
Ben
Yeah.
00:05:58
Richard
Yeah.
00:05:58
Ben
so when i'm So when I'm standing in the ice cream shop, you're that guy asking, do you have dog ice cream?
00:06:02
Richard
Yeah. yeah Yeah.
00:06:04
Ben
Yeah. I can imagine.
00:06:05
Richard
Does this guy eat dog ice cream? what what it Makes no sense.
00:06:08
Ben
What? but
00:06:10
Richard
How about you, Ben?
00:06:10
Ben
And being a cat...
00:06:11
Richard
What's the worst mocha you've ever put on anything?
00:06:13
Ben
Well, speaking of trees, so I'm standing on the back deck. I'm not even kidding. Standing on the back deck of our home and with my wife. And I said to you know what i really love about this the view that we have is that tree there, took about two houses away in the in the neighborhood. I said, it's just it's just beautiful. it's It's a big tree. It's probably 40, 50 years old. You know, it's a massive tree.
00:06:37
Ben
um And, you know, it it sort of framed the city outlook, didn't block it it.
00:06:43
Richard
No.
00:06:44
Ben
It blocked some view, of course, being such a big tree. um But it sort of framed the the view that we had. And it was it's just a beautiful part of of what we had. That was on the Sunday morning. We're having a coffee on the deck.
00:06:57
Ben
The next day it was cut down.
00:07:01
Ben
I'm not even, not even like the next week, the next month, in the, like the next day it was cut down. And Tanya said to me, did did you know Gregor was cutting down the tree?
00:07:14
Ben
And i was like, what are you talking about? And she said, come out here. I walked out there and it's just gone. It's it's gone.
00:07:20
Richard
Oh no, there it goes.
00:07:21
Ben
it was crazy. So um she said, that is ridiculous. She said, don't you tell me you like anything that I love.
00:07:33
Ben
So, yeah, that was that was an unusual unusual experience to to realize that I had that power. so um And with with with great power comes great responsibility.
00:07:41
Richard
Yes, yes. Use it wisely, Ben.

Travel Tips: Enjoying Undistracted Moments

00:07:47
Ben
i Travel tip of the week. Here's an interesting one. I found out this by accident. um Just ah a mental hack. Just leave your phone in flight mode just a bit longer. I realized I'd got off the plane and I'd forgotten to take my phone and out of flight mode. I'd actually enjoyed just, you know, getting, disembarking and hanging out with, I had my family with me, know, just talking to them, collecting luggage, just a little bit of chit-chat and stuff.
00:08:14
Ben
And I realized when we got into the car that I hadn't taken my phone off of flight mode um because I couldn't use the GPS.
00:08:20
Richard
Nice.
00:08:22
Ben
That's how I realized it. And I was like, huh, that was cool. And I'm thinking, you can always just tell people your flight was delayed or something if you um you know if if you wanted to have a little 30 minutes extra to yourself.
00:08:34
Ben
you know that That instantly, as soon as the wheels land, reaching for your phone and taking off of flight mode, um my I'm like, going to rethink that one. So, yeah.
00:08:42
Richard
Yeah. Okay. Yep.
00:08:45
Ben
and ah And I've since noticed that Outlook also has a function where you can just tell it you're offline. So I figure you just disconnect from Wi-Fi for that one. But, you know, that was an interesting one as well.
00:08:56
Ben
So, yeah, yeah, interesting.
00:08:59
Richard
Cool.
00:09:00
Ben
Hey, um yeah have you ever unsubscribed from a mailing list and got that survey where it's like, you know, I no longer yeah no longer want to receive these emails?
00:09:07
Richard
Oh, yeah, every time. that that
00:09:10
Ben
Yeah.
00:09:10
Richard
I no longer want to do your survey, actually.
00:09:12
Ben
Yeah, you and the options are like, I never signed up for this list, um you know, but one of the options I noticed is these messages are inappropriate and should be reported as spam.
00:09:25
Ben
Now, you're giving the feedback to the owners of the list. How many times do you reckon they say, you know, you're right, this is spam. We should report ourselves.
00:09:34
Ben
Yeah.
00:09:35
Richard
So I think what happens is nobody sends their own emails, they all use a service like MailChimp or something else. I think MailChimp actually puts that up and then they have a responsibility to like block or filter the company there.
00:09:42
Ben
I'm
00:09:47
Ben
Gotcha. Okay.
00:09:50
Richard
um
00:09:50
Ben
Yeah. I thought it was like this.
00:09:51
Richard
But I've got a funny story about ah about email spam. So like um it was ages ago now that i' probably 15 years that I did Oxfam trail walker.
00:09:54
Ben
Okay.
00:10:01
Richard
And if you don't know, it's teams of four and you do a hundred kilometers, you've got, I think 48 hours to to do 100 Ks or whatever.
00:10:08
Ben
course you did. Why wouldn't
00:10:10
Richard
Yeah. and I had kind of like three other guys that were loosely interested, but didn't have their email addresses. So I, so I just made addresses for them on my domain.
00:10:20
Richard
send it all through to my e e inbox and sign them all up. um and Anyway, I'm still getting spam.
00:10:26
Ben
ah if you have and If you ever enter me into a 100-kilometer walk, I'm not doing it.
00:10:33
Richard
I'm still getting spam for those email addresses to this day.
00:10:35
Ben
To this day.
00:10:36
Richard
Oxfam must have sold that on to everyone they possibly can.
00:10:36
Ben
That's
00:10:40
Richard
Yeah.
00:10:40
Ben
how they fund it. That's how they funded that free power bar you got at the 50K mark.
00:10:41
Richard
yeah Yeah, not with the entry fee. Yes.
00:10:46
Ben
Yeah.
00:10:47
Richard
yes ah Anyway, there you
00:10:50
Ben
Okay, well, thats that that at least helps me because I thought it was like just telling a fox that they shouldn't eat the sheep. you know like you know oh Oh, yeah, no, you're right.
00:10:58
Richard
Yes.
00:10:59
Ben
i won't I'll stop sending these these emails. you know But that yeah that actually makes that actually makes more sense.
00:11:02
Richard
Well, they probably do yeah. Hmm. Hmm.
00:11:07
Ben
Hey, listen to feedback.

Is Being 'Generous to a Fault' Possible?

00:11:08
Ben
MM writes in and asks us, what does being generous to a fault actually mean?
00:11:16
Ben
like Can you be so generous that it's a bad thing?
00:11:22
Richard
don't think so.
00:11:25
Ben
So it's just a silly statement. Oh, Richard, he's generous to a fault. What?
00:11:32
Richard
Richard, are we talking about the same guy?
00:11:35
Ben
listen You mean the guy that signs people up to 100-kilometer walks? That's not generous. yeah That's a good question. Good question.
00:11:44
Richard
It is.
00:11:45
Ben
that Listeners are coming up with better conundrums and we we don't even have an answer for them.
00:11:49
Richard
think it is a better comment.
00:11:49
Ben
And then we've got nothing, mate. Hey, if you want to leave a comment, um send us a text or send us a conundrum that we can't solve.
00:11:51
Richard
It's solid though.
00:11:59
Ben
um Do so, please. The links are in the

00:12:01
Ben
show notes. You could join the inner sanctum, if you like. Conundrum of the week. You know, when you send us someone a message on iMessage, someone on iPhones, and it says that the person has notification silence, and you just click notify anyway, um what what actually happens?
00:12:20
Ben
Like, hey, why does it give you the option? If I've silenced my notifications, why does it allow me to override it?
00:12:24
Richard
It's a bit weird, isn't it? Yeah.
00:12:28
Ben
And i'll if my daughters are listening, shout out to you. I click notify anyway every time.
00:12:33
Richard
And then it does that big animation where it goes huge on the screen and bobbles and jumps around.
00:12:34
Ben
Yeah, yeah, yeah. And I'm like, so so i've i've got this I've got this thought of my my daughter sitting in a lecture or something somewhere and having a phone dutifully on silent and her dad just clicking notify anyway and going, you know, you have received a message.
00:12:37
Richard
Yeah.
00:12:52
Ben
But but what happens? What's going on?
00:12:54
Richard
What happens? i don't know.
00:12:54
Ben
Yeah.
00:12:55
Richard
We'll have to do some research.
00:12:56
Ben
Oh, no. No, that's not us. We'll send it to another podcast. I think what we'll do is, we will'll okay, well we'll between us, we'll work it out.
00:13:07
Ben
We'll turn our notifications off and we'llll we'll report back next week with with what's going on.
00:13:08
Richard
work it out.
00:13:14
Ben
Hey, that's it, Richard. Listeners have been BCC'd on our week. In next week's show, you went to jury duty and you're going to tell us about it. See you next week.
00:13:22
Richard
I did.
00:13:24
Ben
Bravo, Charlie Club. Out.
00:13:26
Richard
And that's the pod.
