00:00:47
Speaker
It's a beautiful morning. i wish i could thing I was like, are we counting down yet? We are live.

Music, Talents, and Dreams

00:00:57
Speaker
Do you have any music abilities?
00:01:00
Speaker
Good morning, everyone. No, but you know what? um I love music. like I'm sure a lot of people, but I love music. music I love live music. I feel like everything in my body gets electrified when I hear music, especially live. And I'm like, why didn't God give me the gift of a voice? like I feel like I am meant to be a singer.
00:01:22
Speaker
am. He into sports and Aaron Andrews. Right. Or I could have gone to Aaron Andrews or Kelly Clarkson. I mean, now Aaron Andrews actually probably maybe if I would have changed my decisions earlier on, I think I probably could have been not as good as her, but her position.
00:01:40
Speaker
But Kelly Clarkson, there's no, I mean, i would had to been reborn with a boy. So. Yeah, I also, i when I have a couple cocktails, I actually can sing.
00:01:51
Speaker
um You think you can. I can. i can. um But we actually just went and... You dance too when I drink one. and We went to visit my niece down in South Carolina and now she just texted me. Wow.
00:02:10
Speaker
That's wild. I just looked at my phone and she just sent me a message. She has a beautiful voice. And every time we're down there, I like sit on the floor and I'm like, all right, come sit the piano.
00:02:22
Speaker
Sing me a song. I love it. i artful It is. And she sang one of my favorite Christian songs, Psalm 23.

Social Media and TV Recommendations

00:02:31
Speaker
don't know if you've heard it um i'll send it to you but it's i think i sent it to you actually a couple um like a month ago um yeah just it's powerful i love lot that was a random thoughts by heather and julie but that's what we do maybe aaron andrews will see this but you know our 100 followers maybe one of those will be aaron andrews and maybe she'll like maybe they'll have me on their podcast or i've heard sweatshirts or
00:02:59
Speaker
but Maybe on the sidelines with her. Okay. Heather's not a stalker. I just want to make sure everyone knows that. It's borderline. Okay. Another random thought by Heather while we're squirreling.
00:03:13
Speaker
Joey hates when I say squirrel, it triggers something in him and he gets like mad at me. Like, I think it's funny in general, but he does not like when say squirrel. Okay. So someone, my friend, Mike Lynn, and then also my hairdresser is a friend, Dana.
00:03:27
Speaker
but you Everyone's sending me things to watch while I'm laying in a recliner for two weeks going absolutely stir crazy. um And one that they both said to me, you have to watch Ted Lasso. Have you seen Ted? You not watched Ted Lasso?
00:03:40
Speaker
Okay, so I watched Ted Lasso. Did you cry? A lot. um Yesterday was the last episode and I kept pausing it and walking away, coming back. I was like, this cannot end.
00:03:51
Speaker
This cannot end. I called her after my... It's over. and I need another Ted Lasso. It was because it came out, was it 2021? Or was it? Okay, 2021.
00:04:06
Speaker
um It was funny because we started it as soon as it came out. um We have a big soccer family, so it was like kind of I guess that was the the original pull but um the advertisement on it being something heartfelt and I mean just to the range of emotions that you go through in that show and then it was like right after COVID obviously so everybody wanted to feel something.
00:04:31
Speaker
two things one from there's two huge journeys up and across my driveway. Always makes me another thing. Animals. Okay. But um you don't, I heard that multiple times. though I don't really like soccer.
00:04:44
Speaker
I don't know a damn thing about soccer. It's not a soccer show. It's not a soccer. It's not a soccer movie. I mean, it's around soccer. It's about the story. But I'm telling you, and so Joey only watched like a random episode here and there because he was at work all day when I watched it.
00:04:57
Speaker
So I'm going to watch it again with him. Anyway, no on if anyone listening, all 200 of you, they need to watch two of us. Okay. So there is a sequel coming out. We need one of those assistants that looks up things as we talk about it.
00:05:13
Speaker
We'll get there one day. um mystery sorry
00:05:22
Speaker
Ted Lasso um and is not getting a traditional sequel. Instead, season four is expected to take a new direction, focusing on Ted coaching a women's team.

Cancer Journey and Lifestyle Changes

00:05:33
Speaker
So it's more of a spin-off. Upcoming season will introduce new characters and storylines while retaining the charm of the original series, which not a perfect description.
00:05:47
Speaker
Okay. you Those are some of the things, but so, so good. Another positive of my cancer journey is Ted Lasso. that is That is a good one. That is the most perfect show.
00:06:01
Speaker
no I needed to feel good. Yeah. being in little Another funny story. So my friend, Karen from Naples, who's just one of my dearest, dearest friends, such a long story there, but she came um to me with me when Joey went back to work and, um, Oh my God, Julie, it just went anesthesia, cancer. I have no idea what I was about to say.
00:06:28
Speaker
I was like, I'm waiting on the edge of my seat for what you were about to say. This has happened so much. What we just talking about? Karen.
00:06:39
Speaker
Ted Lasso. Feel good. She came. When do I go back to work? It's totally, totally lost. When it comes back, all it's going to really good.
00:06:51
Speaker
I do blame that and my vision issues on anesthesia. Yeah. this kind of be so good you went It'll come back. It'll come back. and I'll tell it when it comes back. i Might be a different podcast.
00:07:09
Speaker
Anyway, what do you want to talk about? I was thinking a little bit about, i mean, I don't want every episode to be about my cancer journey, but, and again, I'm, um and I am no expert. I think it's important to document it, you know, ah as close to the source, you know, your diagnosis. And I think that's really important for people, right? Because, and, you know, it's not like we're going to about it every single episode, but a month from now, there's going to be a new chapter of, you know, your health.
00:07:39
Speaker
So... um yeah I think it's important as as close to but to live um as your life is happening that it's going to be helpful for people to make an impact on others who are potentially going through something similar.
00:07:55
Speaker
Yeah. Or what but one thing I thought about to talk about today is some of the things that you and I talked about before that are in better important. and And I think a lot of us will dabble in things we can do to be healthier, to feel better.
00:08:09
Speaker
um Certainly, like I said in our last episode, I took it up a notch when I found out I had cancer. But as I've really... really it changed a lot of these habits and engaged in all of these behaviors and removed things from my life.
00:08:23
Speaker
and I mentioned before too, how I feel better than I've, 55 and I feel better than I've felt other than the surgery recovery in in years. And again, some of these things are probably have some conflictual opinions.
00:08:37
Speaker
Is conflictual word? Yeah, I think it is. I don't know. does It doesn't matter. It is now, you know, 18 year olds and 13 year olds can make up words. So can we. Exactly. and They actually have no meaning that you can see some of them and it says it means nothing.
00:08:52
Speaker
Girls talk to me. I'm like, does that mean i don't know what that word means, but if I have context anyway, so some of the things, obviously no sleep and we always have known sleep is important. And the more I have researched things to help prevent disease and cancer, obviously sleep is top, top, top stress, you know, trying to and i want to go back to that. So how do you sleep?
00:09:17
Speaker
better than, or how do you make sleep more of a priority or? Well, for me and every, you know, this is going to impact people differently. So you have to really, and it goes back to really knowing your body and what, what you respond to don't respond to what impacts you mentally, emotionally.
00:09:35
Speaker
Um, one thing, know, I'm going through menopause too, but before, I'm going to go through it again. Um, um that impacts your sleep too. have back pain that impacts my sleep too. So there's some things you, you know, you attack differently, but alcohol.
00:09:51
Speaker
Um, and I mean, i've talked about before, like how I used to enjoy, um several glasses of wine almost every night. And, um, people say, oh, that relaxes me. And sure it did for a minute, but, and you're all of us, but definitely me.
00:10:07
Speaker
it At three in the morning, two in the morning, i would wake up with my heart racing. And that is alcohol. It's my body um working through the alcohol, the sugar of the alcohol. So once I cut that out and and not completely, i have a i've since my cancer has been gone, I've had a glass of wine occasionally now.
00:10:24
Speaker
But I know if I have one, it's one. And I literally have no desire to have more than that. But my sleep improved um dramatically when I stopped drinking wine at night. Right. So I, and then I think learning, um, and which is another one with stress, but also just learning how to relax and, um, remove, like, I know some things that I will watch will stimulate me in a negative way. like like get Like even some drama shows that are around, like, I can't, I love whatever her name is from s from Law & Order SUV. Mariska Hardie.
00:10:59
Speaker
I love her. That show impacts me. like I can't rape and i can't. yeah Heather's on on screen. She's like, go find the person.
00:11:12
Speaker
I can't, so I need to watch that during the day. Not that I can watch TV during the day, but you know what mean? So you have to kind of know what you got to rest in a peace state, but certainly, you know, alcohol exercise helps not, ah not necessarily at night, but you have, you have to figure out what your body responds to. People say, turning TV off, I can watch TV and go right to sleep. So for me, that's fun.
00:11:32
Speaker
So I just think, but also just knowing, knowing your body, knowing how you respond and certainly simple things like Making sure you, if you know you have to get up at five in the morning, that you, to the best that you can, go to bed at a time that allows you to get seven, to eight hours sleep. So little bit of things.
00:11:47
Speaker
But sleep, it mean I don't care what you Google or search or chat to BT, sleep is at the top. So we have to do what we can um for sleep. And then stress, you know, obviously some stress for like, I love when people go,
00:11:59
Speaker
You know, my job is stressful. Well, it's learning, you know, tactics and things you can do to help come you come down from stress. It's minimizing and putting boundaries around things that cause you stress. There are even some things we can control that cause us stress. Some friends cause us stress.
00:12:15
Speaker
Right. Well, even if your job is stressful too, there are certain scenarios that you could be in where your reaction could be different, right? Mm-hmm. my I can control this part of my job to this extent.
00:12:28
Speaker
And then outside of that, when there are maybe additional parties or, you know, the weight of whatever deadline you have, whatever of that, you can control as much as you can. But and we do have to remind ourselves that we are human. We are not robots.
00:12:42
Speaker
um and And our reaction to how we handle that is is the biggest thing. Oh my God, I love that but that. We could do a whole episode on how we respond and react to things. But um I think really definitely...
00:12:58
Speaker
controlling what you can, right. And saying no to things you can saying yes to things that you

Diet and Family Well-being

00:13:02
Speaker
should. i think one thing that talk a lot about is, you know, reducing stress and getting rid of stress, but also when you put things in your life that bring you joy, that it's kind of like the deposit withdrawal thing. So the more things that give me joy, the less things that can impact me in a negative, stressful way.
00:13:18
Speaker
So being very intentional about conversations, peace, being outside, being with nature, animals, you know, reading friends, music, that bring you joy start out way. You should have more joy and less stress. So, um and then things that I have that made a lot of changes in is like, we've talked about this before too, is just toxins, right?
00:13:41
Speaker
Diet, um exercise, how important strength training is, especially as you get older, but exercise is so important. it looks different for everybody, just moving your body 30 minutes a day.
00:13:53
Speaker
um And then working up to like, I have got, when I'm better, I've got to add strength training into my life at and at a much higher level than I was before um for lots of reasons. But um the the medicine I'm about to go on, it can impact your bone.
00:14:07
Speaker
um density so i need to really do some things around there but you know toxins like smoking pesticides we're exposed to so many things um so what can you everything you buy at the grocery store is has plastic surrounding it i'm like can you just give me one of those shovels and i'll just you know put it in like a i don't know reusable glass jar or something um but it is the amount of plastic and once you look around um Something else that I've seen lately, and I've been trying to use the microwave less because it's just the worst thing you can turn on even if your kid especially if your kids are in the room with you.
00:14:45
Speaker
um A huge trend that I'm seeing is people who are building houses or redoing their kitchens or not even putting a microwave in there and their homes. Yeah. And again, know people go, Oh my God, I couldn't, I'm not saying don't ever use a Marker wave, but you know, so for, for, for me, a little stuff that we took was, um, this amazing charity called, uh, pink ribbon, good PB G. Um, you guys, wait, what?
00:15:12
Speaker
PRG pink ribbon, good anesthesia brain, cancer anesthesia brain. I'm just going to, every time I'm going to do letters. But they are a charity that reached out to me through my doctor's office.
00:15:24
Speaker
And this is a side note. I get 10 meals um a week for eight weeks um free. I don't pay for a thing. And they're healthy, healthy food. Now, they do come in those plastic containers. So what I do, a little thing, pre-cancer, would have thrown that in the microwave for three minutes and heat it.
00:15:42
Speaker
Now I put it on a paper um plate or a glass bowl and heat it up. So that's a small thing. But over time, you know, that's something I can, I'm still using the microwave, but I'm not putting it in a plastic container.
00:15:55
Speaker
I mentioned our last episode, like the Keurig, my, my doctor was like, little things, Heather, she goes, how do you drink your coffee? Well, first of all, you guys, coffee is full of mold.
00:16:06
Speaker
Sorry. Hello. Full of mold. So you should try to get mold free coffee, which I have now. At this point, to two months later, actually enjoy my mold-free coffee. It took a while.
00:16:18
Speaker
um But I got rid of my Keurig. Or we can do the Keurig, but you can put it, you know, instead of doing the pods, you can put that little thing in there and you can put your coffee in there. coffee grounds in there, yeah. Yeah. I just got rid of my, well, I have it um put away. didn't throw it away. But now I do.
00:16:32
Speaker
I went back to my coffee pot with my mold-free coffee. So, again, that was something simple. um that I could do, a change I could make that hopefully now like you know the cancer is gone, but now obviously reoccurrence is my goal is prevent reoccurrence. So little things like that, but you're right. Processed foods. like I mean, I thought I ate relatively good, but the amount of crackers, i mean, that's great Now got ingredients and everything. And if you can't pronounce it, your body, i don't know if it's, if yeah I should say your body can't absorb of it, but it's not good for your body. So now when I decide, I'm like, first of all, there's 30 ingredients and two of them I can pronounce.
00:17:08
Speaker
right no And they're crackers or something like simple. um Yeah. And then it's hard, like something, One, it's either, right, well, going to make your own crackers. Or what sucks for our, you know, entire ah civilization is, like, I buy good nature natured crackers, which I love. They're sir delicious.
00:17:31
Speaker
think they have, like, 10 ingredients, which i'm still is kind of a lot for crackers. But guess what? There's probably 40 crackers in this box, and they cost $7. Like, crazy. So it's ah it's it's got to be more of a treat because it's like, I can't, you know...
00:17:45
Speaker
Yeah. I buy $7 boxes. Well, you know, I love like salts, like salt and chips are my, well, our restaurant that you love that we're going to go to when you're here, urban market. um They have chips in there. And i was like, I looked at the back of the ingredients, potatoes, which is carbs. So again, it's a treat for me because I'm trying to um you know minimize carbs, but it's potatoes, avocado, and sea salts.
00:18:09
Speaker
Oh, that's three things. I'm like,
00:18:18
Speaker
it just takes a little effort, but you know, i i just little things like that and minimizing your sugar um is so, so important, but even,
00:18:29
Speaker
for the people that say, well, if I'm going to get I'm going to get it, which I think is bullshit. But I feel better. You're going to feel better. So what's the, okay, so you think you're still going to get cancer or heart, whatever. You're going to feel better right now. Like I feel my energy, my sleep, my mental clarity other than the anesthesia brain.
00:18:49
Speaker
um is so much better. Okay. So do it for those reasons, you know, you ah this and it's not, it hasn't been that hard. Now, obviously I had a motivation, a different motivation now, more important, you know, motivation, if you will. But oh wow. Do I, I just would encourage start somewhere.
00:19:10
Speaker
Start somewhere. Do one do one thing. Right. Right. Yeah. I mean, you definitely had a swift kick in the ass to do a lot of things. um And you had you had also the ability to really focus on yourself.
00:19:22
Speaker
um You know, I know there was some conversation there on on starting some new projects, but, um you know, it you did the absolute right thing to make sure that, you know, you could make this a priority for you um yeah getting better.
00:19:39
Speaker
And then making those changes that are going to, and they're not just impacting you. They're going to impact your children and your husband. And, you know, like they're seeing what you're putting in your body and how you're treating your body.
00:19:51
Speaker
um So it's, it's huge. And it's, what else? I'm more patient. I'm more, now bit off my husband's head last night. Sorry, Joey. Well, yeah they are. im not men are for mar Men are still from Mars. Okay. That doesn't change even though you eliminated plastic.
00:20:06
Speaker
Yeah. Right. But again, back to, you know, pretty much eliminating alcohol, bad foods, things that make, I've talked to you before about the food hangover. I felt like if I got to Mexican the next morning, I feel completely hungover, whether I had a drink or not because of the food.
00:20:21
Speaker
So another benefit of of cleaning up your life and how you feel your body and the terrain of your body is I'm better. I'm a better mom. I'm a better wife. I'm a better person. i'm better friend.
00:20:33
Speaker
um And I'm, I, there's, you know, there, it just gives you the ability to be

Balance and Beauty

00:20:41
Speaker
your best. You would perform at the highest level that you're capable of when you are in the best state that you can be in physically and mentally.
00:20:49
Speaker
Yeah. You don't have a actual, like what what's ah the word? Um, Like the sl... ah Anesthesia brain. Oh yeah, you didn't go.
00:21:03
Speaker
Like slud. You don't have literal... That's not the word. Anyways, let's move on from that.
00:21:12
Speaker
Let me just say this to talk to someone yesterday who just got diagnosed. She's trying to navigate working, trying to call it doctors. And I said to her, I'm so grateful that I didn't have to worry about that.
00:21:23
Speaker
i had like children running around and things like that. But I, so shout out to Carney and CR3 because when I, he's my new, new future boss. And when he found out about this, he was like, I was like, I, you know, me, was like, i think I can still work. I can, yeah, I'm ready to start. Let's start. I can do, I can do it all. I can navigate my health challenges and,
00:21:42
Speaker
cancer and surgery and still be new on my job. And he was like, no, Heather, you need to focus on yourself, take care of yourself. We will be here. And I was like, wow, that's kind of all I want.
00:21:53
Speaker
Yeah, no, absolutely. I mean, that support and, and knowing that you, you know, made the right decision to really, really focus on yourself. Um, but yeah, Carney's the bio um ah bomb, the bomb.com.
00:22:08
Speaker
The bomb. Um, So, yeah, I think that just, um again, like I talked to talk to you the last episode, feeling grateful in so many ways and um making small changes.
00:22:19
Speaker
you know you You can go super extreme too, Julie, which I love that my functional doctor is like, don't overwhelm yourself with you know, it's going extreme, like, you know, hair, you put in your hair as chemicals, but you can put on your nails as chemicals, you know, so there's, you can really um go down the research rabbit hole, the fear rabbit hole.
00:22:40
Speaker
And then, um then you you, then now what I'm doing is that, and now I'm not living my life or I'm not present in moment. So it's really is finding a balance and being okay with, with your decisions and always just trying to get better and improving. Cause I don't want to be in a place where I'm scared of everything. And, you know, I'm, you know, gray headed, look like shit, feel like shit because i and now I'm not enjoying the present. So it is about really constant improvement, little decisions moving in the right direction.
00:23:10
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, that's important. It's it. is It's hard balance to be like, okay, well, this is something that brings to me joy. um Is there an alternative? Right. I can still say say, like, is there something different that I can use? Like, can I use, you know, they make a ton of organic nail polish. Let's talk about nails.
00:23:29
Speaker
But I don't really need the UV light on them anymore. Maybe I'll just get a really nice manicure and get a clear coat or something versus, um you know, the UV light. ah But yeah, it's, it's, you do have to be cautious, but the impact that those things make versus like the sleep and the the toxins that you've eliminated from your body, like those are huge impacts that are affecting you daily.
00:23:54
Speaker
So I think you also have to look at when you're making those decisions, yeah Like you said, you go to Mexican, you feel like shit, you're bloated. That's affecting your entire day. You go get your nails done. Okay, well, they give me cancer in 10 years from the UV light on my nails.
00:24:12
Speaker
Yeah. you You figure out what what, you know, what you're comfortable with and what the outcome that decision could ultimately, know, be my, I did switch to not complete better makeup, clean makeup, but I did switch a lot of my makeup to clean makeup. And there's a lot, there's a lot of options out there.
00:24:30
Speaker
What are you using? Um, uh, moxie look i have to i'll post it moxie look i was just walking around with karen and we walked into this place and i was like um walked in started to walk out and she was like you guys know much about us i'm like no she goes well we're actually very we're clean we our products are all made from natural and anyway she educated us i'm like okay and now of course my instagram goop comes up a lot which i love when it's paltrow so her skincare line keeps coming up jenny mccarthy um has a great, she I keep seeing her mascara, which she talks about is completely clean just the the chemicals that are in lots of lots of mascara and how that can get into your eyes through your, so I haven't tried hers yet, but ah I will try hers next, I think.
00:25:13
Speaker
But if you just search it once on your phone, people, and it'll start coming up all over your feet. Hello phone, show me clean mascara. That's one thing that I cannot leave the house without. So I can go the, this is Jim Julie. So you guys are all welcome if you're watching.
00:25:27
Speaker
I do not put mascara on to to the gym, but if i I'll try, I'll try and do, depending on like, if I'm not having any in-person meetings, I'll try and do no makeup a couple days a week.
00:25:38
Speaker
um But I will not, not put mascara on. And I was just talking to another friend, um Julie, the other day, and she, yeah her name's Julie. I'm not talking about myself.
00:25:49
Speaker
Carson. Okay, Elaine. like told me do myself um She was talking about, so she's worked in the eye health field and just the amount of bacteria, even if you are using a thin one. So she buys like the sample wands to use every time because she was like, you have no idea how disgusting wand is you're like trying to get the last bit of mascara out and you've been using it for i don't want to i'm not gonna admit on on live podcast recording how long i probably tried to use my mascara but and my makeup is holy shit i've had them for years gonna go throw them all the way right now
00:26:32
Speaker
I like save stuff because I'm like, oh, I might need, I don't know, black eyeliner for something. When in the hell? And I'm going to sit in front of a mirror and put black eyeliner on. But yeah, we'll have to try some clean mascara. I think that's a huge one.
