Nervous Beginnings and Identity Concerns

00:00:00
Speaker
Thank you so much for being on the show. I'm so excited to have you. Okay, I'm not gonna lie, I'm a bit nervous. Why are you Exactly. I was asking myself the same question. It was it's literally because I don't think I'm a ah pop culture gay. And so I fall into this like, Anyways, I will say, but you were asking questions and I. You're like, what does this mean? What does this even mean? Who is this person? But you know what? I am going to call bullshit on that. You are a pop culture gay because here's the thing. Here's the thing. Who? I'm sorry. Who manifested a certain someone being on Cowboy Carter? I'm sorry. Who is that? I think it's mostly I think it's I think it's Devon Way, star of Queer as Folk.
00:00:47
Speaker
oh On Grey's Anatomy? i'm I'm in love with Tanner Adele. You are. And I really, you know, I worked so hard to come out as gay, you know, in my life and just be like, okay, we're fully finally accepting of being a full homosexual. And then Tanner Adele came across the radar and I'm like, oh, am I curious about being bi?

First Virtual Meeting and Pop Culture Surprises

00:01:08
Speaker
Like, I'm like, oh, what you doing? I was like, so now I have to, I think I'm like, going into the closet for maybe being curious about being tan or adult sexual or something. yeah You're a tan or adult curious. And that is a okay, I mean, talk about a more stunning person to be curious about, like, seriously stunning, stunning. So I want to talk about this really quick though, because for the listeners out there, Devin, I've had the pleasure of following Devin for quite some time now. Devin following me for quite some time now. We always chit chat back and forth. um So this is our first time like meeting yeah yeah virtually. um But Devin, like I would say, gosh, Kalba Carter, what is time? Kalba Carter, what? It came out almost two months ago now. Two months ago now, actually, today.
00:01:54
Speaker
And, um, you know, but of a few weeks before that, though, you messaged me and he was like, and you were like, I want you to listen to this artist. Her name's Tanner Adele and give me your, he's like, listen to her EP and then give me your thoughts. And we had a very lovely conversation about it. And I was just talking about this with Joe because I've recorded with Joe earlier this week. I love Joe. I, let me tell you what, when I, you told me that Joe, you you you were like, you're not going to have a better podcast guest. And Joe, what a great time. yeah Did he, did he tell you about it at all? um He did. He messaged me. and He's like, I just found out you were doing the podcast. Um, good luck being better than me.
00:02:32
Speaker
And I was like, you're right. And now I'm even more stressed. Oh my God. So stressed. So stressed. Oh my God. Has it eaten in four days? Exactly. But no, but you, but I mentioned this to him because i you introduced me to Tanner Adel a mere like three weeks prior to cowboy Carter. No one knew who was going to be on cowboy Carter. No one knew anything about cowboy Carter, except for the fact that cowboy Carter was coming out. yeah They didn't even know. I mean, she didn't know she was going to be in cowboy Carter. she had no idea. And so it was this truly this like magical moment because I remember waking up or actually, no, I'm sorry. I like went to bed that like night before because Australia, New Zealand got the album first, fuck first which was I'm like, a
00:03:12
Speaker
Felt a little homophobic. No, yeah yeah I was like, if anything, Texas should have gotten it first. Literally. But Beyonce said, this ain't Texas. yeah And they ain't for you. but a a for you yeah And so I remember waking up to like the you know the social media dev at all, everyone like on the you know in the Australian era or or part of the world was like talking about the album.

Time Zones and Night Owl Theories

00:03:38
Speaker
and saying that Tanner Adele was featured on Blackbird. And I remember messaging you instantly, and now I live in Michigan, you live in California. And I was like, Devin, oh my gosh, did you see the news or something like that? And then I was like, just waiting. I was like, oh my God. I was like, I am not going to hear from him for another probably like six hours. Because I'm a freak. Because I wake up at 1 p.m. You know, I got to be like, 1 p.m. 1 p.m. Yeah, whereas I'm waking up at 4am Michigan time. So it's like oftentimes our paths cross because you're going to bed and I'm waking up this morning. I think you were awake and you're still awake. Yeah, that was another fun journey. It was a smaller journey. But that was a fun journey. You going to bed being like, I'm going to bed. It's 10pm. And then all of a sudden, next slide. It's 143. What did you do to fill the time?
00:04:27
Speaker
I don't, I don't know. I literally, I think I might've watched that video that I posted about being 10 PM and i've been for four hours. You know, like we go back and we watch our own stories. I literally blinked and was like, how is it 143? It's 143 AM. Yeah. I can't tell you what I did. It was a whole but was in a full blackout. Wait, that's a lie. You know Chris Renfro? They were also on Queersfolk. They play daddy. Oh, yes, yes, yes, yes. Chris is in A Million Things. I played a video game with Chris on my iPad. And so, yeah, it's like this nerdy video game that Chris and I will play sometimes together. And I played that and I like blinked.
00:05:13
Speaker
and It was 2 a.m. and then I went to bed at 4. Wow. I was like, okay, well. Oh my God. Well, good for you. You know what? Live in your truth and I honor that and respect that. Someone told me one time that, like, historically, and I don't, this is about as, you know, do not quote me on this, but they said that, like, some people are genetically predispositioned to be night owls and early birds because of, like, when back in the tribal days, people had to stay watch.
00:05:43
Speaker
You know, and oh all of my ancestors let us have been like the night watch because interesting. Yeah, I am. I am a slow riser and OK. I can stay awake all night long and be like. Oh my God, that is wild. And you're not the actually the first person to tell me this.

Social Media Musings

00:06:02
Speaker
my My best friend, Jeff, he lives in Atlanta, is very similar. He thrives waking up later, you know staying up late. He's like living his best life. Whereas for me, I'm a freak, freak of nature, waking up at 4, 4.30 AM, bright eyed and bushy tailed, and like, let's go. Yeah, posting out your close friends. yeah Yeah, seriously, I'm just like, oh my God.
00:06:27
Speaker
Which, let me tell you what, close friends. That's my new conversation. That's the new conversation. And I saw that and I like laughed to myself and I was like, drag me. But i but also I was like, what's what's the what's the feedback you've gotten? Okay. So, so far, um I can read it to you. And this is happening in real time for the viewers. um So people so far tell me about my close friends. ah Someone said, should I add you to mine with like a devil emoji? And I'm like, probably not. No. Someone said, yeah, I use it for my thought shit. And I said, spicy. And then their response was send nudes. So that's that. um Someone else said, and this is all within a span of an hour.
00:07:14
Speaker
Someone said, it's for nudes. So really, I'm like, and then my experience with your close friends, I'm like, oh, it is just for the spicy. It's for spicy. It's for sharing spicy foods. Yeah. spicy foods And I'm like, I don't know if I have spicy content in my phone to post. my on to
00:07:38
Speaker
yeah i've seen I've seen one spicy content from you. Listen, i will but then I'm like, i if that's if I'm taking it, it's not gonna be for my buddies I hang out with down the street. Right. I'm gonna post it for the world and then get a date out of it, you know what I'm saying? And the world thanks you for it. Yeah, I was like, well, I think the world for thinking. Yeah. We're thankful. To post it and no one cares. Right. Let me tell you what, my Instagram algorithm is so weird. So anytime I do a public display of this body that I work so hard on.
00:08:16
Speaker
Which, your body body hey, you heard it here first, folks. You heard it here first. Confirmed. That's not the first time they've heard it. But I, every time I post it, which is not frequent anymore, but it used to be a lot more frequent. And whenever I would post, like, let's say a shirtless photo, it would easily rack up the likes and get to be like one of my most liked photos of myself. But then I would also lose 200 followers. Right. Every single time. And I'm like, okay, if this was a business, if I was an actual business and I was taking this to my supervisor, I was like, what am I doing with this information? I'm like, it's one of the most engaged posts.
00:08:58
Speaker
It also made us lose 200 followers. Right? Well, I mean, you're pruning, you know? It's just... Yeah. It's so weird. So, and I used to take it really personally and I've been working really hard to not take it personal anymore.

Deserted Island Discographies

00:09:11
Speaker
Because I'm just like, I'm like, whatever. What the fuck? But yeah. But you got 7,000 to 10,000 lines, you know? everybody yeah yeah Whatever, you know? It's like, hey, hey, and we just got a new app. So whatever. Let's go. Oh, there you go. no quality over quantity any day, yes which is more so where I find my music tastes in general. I love that you just said that great segue because Devin, I so the reason why I mean, I think that you have great taste in general, I mean, just following you and and having the conversations that we have had.
00:09:46
Speaker
And that's why I wanted to have you on the pod, because I was like, I think du'd be you'd be a really fun guest. And also just, you know, pre-introducing the world to Tanner Adel, because I'm still, I'm going to credit you for that manifestation. Thank you. But so the question that I like to ask people that I don't, that I'm still getting to know um is let's pretend that you're stranded on a deserted island. Okay. Okay. You are the only survivor. body yeah this is right yeah there bodies Basically, this is an audition for Yellow Jackets. so okay um We'll see if you get the job. No, you are on a deserted island. You're stranded. You're the only survivor. This is a magical island because in my world, in my head,
00:10:28
Speaker
CDs are still a thing, right? okay And and ah this island gives you a magical CD and a magical CD player. And in order to keep you sane until help arrives, you can put the entire discographies of five of your favorite artists, bands, groups, whomever on this CD. What five artists or bands or groups or whomever would you choose?
00:10:57
Speaker
Okay, I'm too much. This conversation is hard for me. It's hard. Because I'm such a rule follower. And my head is like, if I'm on a deserted island and I need to listen to music to keep me sane, it's not going to be what I normally listen to. I'm going to say the distress. I want to listen to, I will survive. I want to listen to, I'm a survivor, you know? That's okay. It would be, I love a theme. So it would be like Mike, Lou and Ogg on the island soundtrack. It would be the whole thing would be like survivor island theme.
00:11:37
Speaker
um versus my actual taste in music. oh So I'll answer this story in two parts. One, okay I would want one discography to just be like a themed playlist. So I'm gonna choose singles, right? Singles from a bunch of different people to make up a an album. That's my survivor album. Okay. All right. Excellent. Okay. And then my five artists, or I guess I get four now, my four artists that I would listen to to keep me sane. Uh-huh. Oh, Becky Hill. Like, okay. I've seen the name. I don't know if I'm familiar with Becky Hill. Is she featured on like a bunch of dance songs? She is a bunch of dance songs. She is a bunch of. Okay. Becky. I would.
00:12:31
Speaker
Becky Hill, for me,

Music Admiration and Charity Events

00:12:33
Speaker
I don't know, is probably outside of country, the perfect artist. It is a it is every single song, every single song she releases. is like the most cinematic song. It's like a ballad that was written by an ultimate lyricist into a dance beat. like i like And she always takes you on a journey. You feel empowered. You could take any one of Becky Hill songs, throw it over any video and all of a sudden you're inspired, you're crying, you're moved to tears. It is a, it is,
00:13:14
Speaker
A euphoric masterpiece. It is a euphoric masterpiece. And you dance, you cry, you laugh, you sing, you put it on repeat. There's not one Becky Hill song that I can listen to into another song. I have to listen to it, start it over, start it over, start it over, start it over, and then I can eventually get to another song. but I love that. Okay. You, you just made me feel so not alone because when I love a song, I have to go back. I'm like that again, again, again, again. And I'm like, and I'm like, maybe 10 listens in and I'm like, okay, maybe one more time. And then that one more time, turn into 12 more times again. ah yeah I love that. Okay. Back to you.
00:13:57
Speaker
and Becky Hill. Run it back. i Is there a particular favorite song of hers and right now that you like that you're obsessed with? Yeah, she just released a song. It's called Right Here. um She might have just released it like a few weeks ago. It could have been last week. I don't know, but it's been on repeat. I can tell you that. It will be in my Spotify top. oh It will... Oh my gosh. but Oh my gosh. I can't even believe you don't know. Becky Hill is like, I know. Well, okay. I have a feeling that she did a song at least one song with David Guetta. I am. I'm assuming because I remember going through I want to see it was either David Guetta or Joel Corey, one of the two going through the discographies recently and seeing
00:14:42
Speaker
She loves a DJ. Like, she will, if there's a DJ, Becky Hill will put the DJ on the map, you know what I'm saying? She was like, she's like, hey, I've got a song for you, DJ. Hey, Mr. DJ. Yeah. Whoever heard the DJ is. Yeah, I know. I mean, I just pulled it up. i All of these songs, all of them, all of them are so good. Oh, my god. Also, Alarm with Matoma, Warm by Becky Hill, great song. All of them is good, Space by Becky Hill. Listen, I would play it if you could hear it. the li I'm just gonna i'm gonna pull up the lyrics real quick. So it starts and she's like, it's like we're only honest on the weekend. Only when we're out in our minds. Now we're trying to swim in the deep end. Different people, different times. You got troubles with your mother. Then you make me suffer. Mistakes I haven't made. Why is she reading my laundry? You know what I'm saying?
00:15:38
Speaker
And I got problems with my father, I sure do. It's hard to love another without being afraid. Well, maybe we need space? Space? And the song is called, Space? And you when she's singing space, it's not like, maybe we need space. She's like, maybe we need... Oh, my God. youre like Oh, your voice. Oh, oh sorry I need some hot tea anyway. No. And she sends you and so you're getting these deep lyrics and then she's like.
00:16:10
Speaker
Oh my god, NASA found dead. just Dead, dead, yes dead. Wow. Okay. This is a hard this you are going for Becky Hill right now. Okay, I love Becky Hill. Um, okay I love this. Okay. I now have homework because I'm going to have to do a deep dive on Becky Hill. Are you Spotify or Apple music? I'm an Apple music. I know I saw have it. I have it. Okay. you Okay. yeah Apple music on Spotify. Don't ask why ah um I just do you need options sometimes because sometimes some stuff is not on another platform, which is very annoying. Oh, I more find it I keep them all just in case I'm like talking to somebody and they want or like I want to make them a playlist and they don't know. So i I love that. That's so nice. ra That is
00:16:56
Speaker
Gemini. That's the Gemini in you. ah larry What are you? I'm a Gemini. Oh, yeah. I think I knew that. Yeah. ah Yeah. Because you're early June, right? I'm tomorrow. ah Shut the fuck up. Oh my God. You and my friend Jill have the same birthday. Oh my God. amazing Oh my God. Wait. Oh my gosh. So my birthday is June 18th and actually this episode that we're recording will be coming out the week of my birthday. So this is like perfect. This is, oh my God. So happy, I guess belated birthday once this comes out, but a happy early birthday while we're recording. But you know, I, my birthday party is June 29th. So it's going to be right in the middle of
00:17:36
Speaker
I love that. I love that. I think that that I think that that's where you and I had bonded because we did talk about like the birth month. We love celebrating all month long. And you are an honorary June baby considering that you are the 31st of May. Thank you. Thank you. I do think I get both. I get both. And so both. Yeah. If like if people are just they have two faces, I get to you get two months, baby. Let's go. mar that's fine Oh, my God. What are you doing for your birthday? Um, so tomorrow I'm actually, I'm just going to go like, uh, build things. but Okay. Yeah. I'm going to go like, do like housework with, uh, like pay and like put furniture together and stuff. Let's celebrate that. Like for a friend. yeah And, um, so that'll be cute. It's also my dog's birthday.
00:18:23
Speaker
Haunt. Oh my god. Haunt. 30.7. So I'll spend one celebrating him. upbraiding him But then my big birthday. So i ah for the past few years, I've done this thing called Dev Games, which is a like a massive field day. First year it was 40. Last year it was 80. And then I'm thinking there's going to be like 100 to 120 people here this year. um I'm very excited because it's turned into a like a charity event. And this year we are donating anything we can raise to the AIS, the American Indian Services. so Wow. What's really cool about it is 100 percent of everything we donate goes directly to the scholarships for these students, the educations and stuff. and so That's very cool.

Musical Tastes and Nostalgia

00:19:08
Speaker
and Yeah, I'm really, really excited about to see like what's going to happen. but That's going to be so much fun. The fun part is it's like field day. Type of war and dodgeball. and like
00:19:20
Speaker
your favorite people competing to, you know. Yeah, just absolutely destroy each other. back Destroy each other. And I'm running around on a megaphone the entire time going, this is my charity! Oh my God. And I would be like, I would be there like just being the worst athlete in the world. Like I might be fit, but like, so like any sort of game I like get so nerd. I don't know. I sit there and say that I'm bad at it, but that I do get competitive, but like I'd be there. I'd probably be more, be more cheering on. I'd be probably be following you with another phone.
00:19:51
Speaker
Well, get to think. Here's the thing. At Dev Games, you get points for everything. So not just one game. So you can get points for giving me compliments. um You get points for showing up in your team color, for looking cute, for like helping. If I see you walk by and you have like a nice smile, I'll be like 10,000 points. i don't know Let's celebrate right that. ah Like, so you there's many ways to win dev games. Okay. Okay. I would absolutely crush a cute outfit and I would absolutely crush giving compliments. You already got dev points, which are but we're called DPs. so Okay. like Thank you. Thank you. I was really hoping that I would get DP'd that day. So that's correct. Yeah. Yeah. Excellent. Excellent. I love that.
00:20:31
Speaker
and to che mom Oh, best day ever. Let's go. Oh, my God. Okay. Back to your desert island question. Oh, yes. Sorry. I lost the plot. so oh No, no. but This is perfect. So we've got we've got your fun survival playlist because you you are. You're a survivor. You're your theme. You have Becky Hill. We have. You've got three more. OK. OK. Becky Hill. um I'm going to say Ella May. I love Ella May.
00:21:03
Speaker
Oh my God. I haven't heard anyone talk about her in a second. Yeah. Well, I actually don't know where she's been, but every year she's always, it's like seven songs in my, in my spot at my top. but I love that. Okay. You just inspired me. Okay. You just inspired me. I'll just make you a playlist. Please. I will. I would love that. I love that. I, I, you just inspired me because there is, I'm not super familiar with her music either. I know that I know boot up. Yeah. Yeah. Okay.
00:21:33
Speaker
But there is a song that I will save for our songs we don't talk about segment at the end of this episode. Okay. And it's an amazing song. Oh, I can't believe that. Is it DFMU? Nope. Oh, because that song? What is it? DFMU. What is that? Does that don't fuck me up? Me up. Okay. It is. I'm pulling these songs up thinking I'm playing them for you. And I'm like, it is? It is so sexy. It's like this song about like her, I'm assuming, meeting somebody and like there are chemicals just like, and she's like, oh.
00:22:12
Speaker
Don't let me down, but also don't mess me up. Like, you know? yeah Right. Don't mess me up. Oh my God. No, totally. There there are those people where, you know, and it's, I don't even want to say, it's not, I don't want to like say be like negative and be like, Oh, you know that they're bad for them. But like, you know that there's just certain people where they're just like, for whatever reason, their chemistry, like you just said, we'll like get into you and you just, yeah. I think that's a psychological term for it called chemical hijacking. Oh yeah so it's like literally you're like the pheromones of the person will take over your mind and like a drug and it's called chemical hijacking so damn okay well lma is a scientist it sounds like yeah exactly yeah so yeah would put out a warning
00:22:59
Speaker
sarah again So I'll make for sure a Tanner Adele. I know she only has an EP right now, but I would listen to that EP. It takes me on a range. She goes from country to hip hop to like, she has this pussycat dolls moment in the middle with bake it that like, I think is so like sexy and fun. And then you find out that she actually is an award winning baker. And really, yes, she wrote the song. She's one blue ribbons for baking. Are you fucking kidding me about her passion for baking? literally That is amazing. I know. And I okay, so I was just talking about the song with Joe actually on his episode. So this is that that's the one where has like the really cool drum break, right? Like a dance break.
00:23:42
Speaker
Yes. Yes. Like, like, uh, like 75% of the way through. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. like that that order up boom boomop boom yeah And that's because remember after when you had sent me her EP and I, you were like, listen to it. And I would, and I think that that was the one that stood out to me. I was like, I loved that. And for me being the little snod that I am, like I wanted it longer. I was like, get much like desert Eagle. Give me a 10 minute version. Okay. Desert Eagle is hard for me. doesn't mean it was hard for me. um It's hard for me. And it's all Beyonce is really hard for me as well because I want to bring her to the island, but I don't know.
00:24:22
Speaker
ah Wait, okay. Are you sure that you want to say that on here? I i love her. I do. I really do. But when I think about the music that I like. Need to survive. I need to survive. I have Destiny's Child in my, you know, I have have Destiny's Child in my thing. I have, you know what? But One Night Only disco version is one of my all time favorite songs. It's that's so good. It's literally If you wanna see me lose my mind. Really? If one night only starts playing in the background of any room, I'm not in the room. I'm like... You are on that dance floor. I'm like... You know, and it can be in a doctor's office. Like, it doesn't matter where it's at. If it's playing, you no longer have my attention. I am... Come on, baby. Are you that kind of person where, like, if a song that you absolutely love is playing, that, like, you it's hard for you to focus?
00:25:18
Speaker
Oh, absolutely. Oh, my God, same. And that like, like, if I hear even like a little like inkling of like, just anything that I remotely like, and someone's trying to have a conversation with me, I'm just like, just clay yeah I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, wow, that's so crazy. Have you ever heard this song? Yeah, yeah. But I'm like, but JLo, if you if you have my love on the other hand, I always I always think of that song for whatever reason, and with because I had this one moment where I was playing a game with someone or you know that game where you like just like played one second of a song? No, never play that. Oh, you so you play this game where you play one second of a song and then you hit pause and then you have to guess what it is. And I got it. I got that song on the one second. Oh, I was like, are we playing the game right now? I mean, that would be really fun. That would be a fun episode. I it would be fun. So you have your little game show.
00:26:12
Speaker
It would be a functioning game show. Oh my God. Okay. I will give you royalties. Oh my God. You heard it here. yeah seriously like All of a sudden I look at the contract. I'm making nothing in my way. Yeah, right. Yeah. Oh my God. That's they been really good. I knew I do know. I think you would be a great game shows. ah Thank you. I've never even thought of that before. I think you can, if you need ever need ideas of like, like quippy little ideas, like a functioning game show or like any like wordplay, I'm your type. There we go. Okay. Or you want like, Hey, Devin, I'm thinking of like branching out my brand. I can think of 150 things for you to do.
00:26:56
Speaker
Perfect because I because I am currently thinking how do I branch out my brand currently? onm that kidding so something love your people talked about people okay perfect perfect love and nice well consult yeah it's ah By that I mean DM but Exactly. Exactly. My my associate is going to DM your associate. and Exactly. Yeah. Just a big way. 1 30 a.m. for you. 4 30 a.m. for me. like Exactly. Exactly. Okay. I'm ready. So you've got Becky Hill. We've got Tanner Adele.

Controversial Opinions and Concert Revelations

00:27:30
Speaker
We've got your playlist. LMA. She's got one more. And Kelly Clarkson.
00:27:39

right who I love Kelly Clarkson. and um that I okay whoa you just threw out an artist I love Kelly Clarkson but I was not expecting that at all I think you few few few wouldn't I was either Kelly or Whitney and I just they're not in the same since when he's gone on I'm let her rest you know I'm like Whitney Whitney is resting you get to go sleep you know and you've got Kelly's version of Queen of the Night We got Kelly's version of every song. Kelly Oki is my favorite genre. So it I'm just going to say, you know, you i like I think the song that I don't think it's enough recognition is Kelly Oki. Right. You know, I will pick a different song when we get to that question. But Kelly Oki. Oh, my God. I love it. What was your introduction to Kelly Clarkson? Was it American Idol?
00:28:31
Speaker
ah yeah absolutely yeah yeah but I you know what I I think I caught the tail end of American Idol my real when I got into American Idol was Fantasia oh yes like that was my season that I watched all the way through and it's Fantasia if you're watching I'm 100% the reason and you want a American Idol I literally every phone I could find in my house I was like one eight sixty literally I'm not even kidding same I've i've never voted for ah like a game show like that or a a show like that before until her season and same thing Fantasia Brina I was like oh we are voting for her she is winning she was number three right no she she won Fantasia won no no no I meant like she was idol three
00:29:18
Speaker
Yes. She was the fourth Carrie. Yep. I think it went. Yeah. Cause it was, it was Kelly Clarkson and Reuben and Clay. Reuben and Clay. Yeah. And then don't let it play like that. don't do don do that we we This is actually, this is a Clay Aiken Stan podcast. We love that straight man. We love that straight man. Um, but then it was Fantasia and then was it, and then what's Carrie after her? Um, Fantasia, it was either Carrie after her or was it Bo? Or when was the guy? Whoa, I forgot about Bo. Is it Bo? Bo won, right? I'm sure he did. Oh, was it Bo and Carrie? And Carrie won? No, I'm not sure. But no, Fantasia Brana because her season was really iconic because that's the same season as Jennifer Hudson. And Catherine McPhee? No. Are you serious? No, Catherine McPhee was on a later season.
00:30:17
Speaker
I'm almost positive J-hud and Catherine McPhee were on the same season. I am, I am like 99% sure. Was it Catherine and Carrie then? Maybe that's what it was. Catherine McPhee, because Catherine McPhee, her album came out in like 2006 or 2007. I know that Fantasia's season was like 2003-ish or 2004-ish. Okay, she was in Idol 5. Catherine McPhee was in Idol 5 and the winner was Taylor Hicks. Taylor fucking Hicks. Yeah. i I mean, I don't want to talk ill of him, but I was ah mortified. Yeah. Mortified, the Taylor Hicks one, specifically given their lineup. But anyways, Catherine McPhee was the runner up to Taylor Hicks. To Taylor Hicks. And what is Taylor doing now with his life? um Hopefully, he's living a happy, healthy one. Absolutely. We certainly like that. Yeah. well Wow. Wow. OK, well then, what season was our boy who's making a comeback David Archie in?
00:31:12
Speaker
He was on the season with David Allen. I think David... No, no, no, no. Oh, there was all these Davids. There was all the Davids. Sorry. David Allen was the Adam Lambert season. I want to say David Archuleta was the season after Jordan Sparks, or maybe the season before Jordan Sparks. David Cook season. And David Cook was the winner, right? And David Archuleta was the runner up. That is nuts. I fucking love David Archuleta. I love David. And I'm so happy for him. Same. No, seriously, he is absolutely crushing it. like His coming out story, I think is so important. so Right. So important. And I love that he's finally like finding himself and he's just like exploring all these new things. He, I have to say, his Christmas album,
00:31:56
Speaker
okay here Okay, hold on, hold on. I have very strong opinions about this Christmas album because one of my all-time favorite songs is from this Christmas album. Okay, what song is it? um It's called Symphony. No, it's Glorious. Really? Have you heard it? Okay, i don't I think he has two Christmas albums. Was this on the first one or the second one? I only know the one is in the letter. I only I only know the first Christmas album. I think it might be the same album. Oh, is it? Oh, my God. Maybe I'm a fake fan. Oh, my God. No, but it's OK, because I don't know any of the other songs on a winter in the air is the name of the album.
00:32:36
Speaker
Okay, so album it came out 2018. This isn't probably not his first Christmas is it not the first one. Yeah, yeah. yeah Okay, so so together we are whole ahgainst Gemini Gemini. And and so okay, so it's called glorious you said glorious. Okay. magical. It feels, it feels like an everyday song. Sometimes when I want to appreciate life, I'll play the song and I'll just walk outside and I'll breathe. It is so beautiful. And it's just essentially about like him singing about how like life is like a symphony. And when you like pay close attention, you'll see that everything in this world is working together and it's glorious.

Praise for Musical Queens

00:33:13
Speaker
And it's such a beautiful song. And
00:33:16
Speaker
Oh my God, I'm going to have to check this out because yeah, i I had his first album. I have a Christmas album. I had a sophomore album and then he, I think went down like an independent path. And so like, and I think he even did some more like Christian cause I know that he's really, you know, he was very Mormon and so some like Christian or Christian stuff. Um, so he kind of had like lost me for a little bit, but then now I've been kind of going back into a lot of his stuff since it's coming out and whatnot. So I have not visited this album. All right. It's the very last song on the album. Okay. I mean, and i mean sorry, David. You can skip all of them. um but You can just get to Glorious and then you'll stay there for about 12 plays. You'll add to a random playlist you won't hear for months and then it'll come back up and you'll be like, wait.
00:34:03
Speaker
You're like wait one goddamn minute. I love that. yeah So on his first Christmas album, his version of Joy to the World to me is like one of the best versions out there. It rivals Mariah Carey's. They're very different versions. I know. I here's i should say rivals. That's not the right term. i was like I would say it's on par because Mariah's version is very uptempo. It's dance. It's like joyful. It does that mashup. someone el's christmas music rival
00:34:34
Speaker
Mariah Carey's Christmas music. Mariah, I apologize. i There's not enough apologies in the world. It's already been said. It's on film. I know. Yep. Yep. I am canceled. I am canceling my own podcast. I was like, you might be in trouble for this one. I might. The fans are going to be like, who the fuck is this gay? Yeah. They're like, wow. I know David, David, no, David himself would probably cancel me. He'd be like, absolutely not. Absolutely not. I don't want that beef. Ain't nobody got time for that. no Um, but no, but his version of Georgia, the world, very beautiful. His, his voice, like I feel like on a good day when I'm not trying, I, my voice is okay. Like it's like, I can, I can carry a tune. I can do some karaoke, but like I covet.
00:35:23
Speaker
a voice like his the way it's just like it's I can't even describe it but it's just the way he can just like belt it out and hold those notes and it's so the tone of his voice it's so yeah delicious it yeah wow and so he's got that like cute little face when he's singing you know it's yeah but I don't know if that's just like my childhood obsession feeding into adulthood, like watching him as a child and being like, oh, you're amazing, you're amazing, amazing. So now we're indoctrinated, right? It's like Hilary Duff's music or Lindsay Lohan's or like even Vanessa Hudgens, when she released sneaker night, that's maybe not... Sneaker night, oh my God. I'm like, I love you and all of your music, you know? oh Yeah. And I'm like, maybe it's like that.
00:36:15
Speaker
But anything, he released this song, I save it even though I never listened to it because you support the artist. Yeah, of course, you've got to. You've got to support him. You'll sometimes go back to him and be like, oh yeah, that's right. you know there's It is hard though these days, especially in streaming because there's so much content being put out there. you know like I think that they say that there's like 30-60,000 songs a day we're being released on Spotify. Really? That's why you have that whole music. That's why I've had the music a long time for that. Yeah, why not? I've had a time for that. but it's like And it's i honestly, it's probably why too. i'm like I've been really kind of going down some deep dives of like just like a little bit older music like from the 90s and early 2000s and kind of giving that and ah you know a fresh listen and kind of discovery because I'm just like, there's so much these days and it's no shade to anyone. like i I completely respect everyone's hustle.
00:37:08
Speaker
But it's just hard to keep up because there's so much. And because songs also to ours are so short. Well, we're going

The Art of Music and Emotional Journeys

00:37:15
Speaker
to talk about it. We're going to talk about it. Let's talk about it. What is her name? You were posting about her all day today. Oh, Miss Pink Pantherist. Pink Pantherist. That's right. Being like, a song doesn't need a bridge. You don't need to repeat the verse. I was like, that's not a song. That's a jingle. It's a jingle. that is a jingle. That's not a song. but um ah I want to hear a song. I want to hear a jingle. For every song that is a Yonsei by Beyonce, which is unfortunately too short.
00:37:48
Speaker
But it still works, right? It works and we love it and we appreciate it. I'm sorry to everyone else. You cannot be Beyonce with Beyonce. It is so hard for me to get into a song that is shorter than three minutes because it's so quick. It's over. You then kind of forget about it. It doesn't have the staying power in the way that other songs do. And I can't explain it. I would love I would love to speak to like maybe a musicologist about that and maybe like they can kind of speak in a scientific way. But like for me, it's just like because I i will make playlists of like the years and of, you know, whatever came out that year, because usually nine times out of 10, it's not going to make my my top my Apple replay, which is like the Apple Apple version of of wrapped. Never heard of it.
00:38:37
Speaker
Never heard of her. Is that like Zendaya's replay? It's like, exactly. think the same thing It's more like Gaga's replay, but you know. Okay, I never heard of it. Yeah. But it's, it's, yeah, it's, it's hard. And so like, I'll go through like, you know, years like 2020, 2021, 2022, whatever. And I'm like, I completely forgot that these things even existed because it's only two and a half minutes, you know, or like songs even shorter. Like, you know, you have Charlie XCX's, ah speed drive from Barbie, which is a minute and 58 seconds long. I didn't have no recollection. It's right. Yeah, it's like, it's gonna take me 30 minutes just to realize the song is playing. I'm gonna tell you that like, right? and Like the way I'm paying attention to something over here, even if I hit play. Oh, so if it's, I need the 30 minutes just to to hear the song.
00:39:25
Speaker
You know, and then what's that start? I mean, 30 seconds just to hear the song and then 30 seconds. I'm like, oh, I'm here. And now I need it to go on for at least two and a half more minutes. Exactly. you know exactly and while as And as much as we love to replay a song and go back and go back and go back, there is something too that I think kills a song's replay value when it's too short because it becomes too repetitive. Exactly. Yeah. Because there is a difference between, you know, having your extended intros and outros and dance breaks and you know, double courses at the end or whatever, whatever. Or when you have just like
00:40:00
Speaker
verse, chorus, verse, chorus, end. And then you're like, replay it back. And then you're just like- Well, there's no, it's like, it really, there's no like reprieve or journey that you go on. It really is like, duh, duh, duh, duh, interact. Oh, oh, and then it becomes way too sensitive, you know? Yeah, yup. Versus like, this nice like journey, climactic journey that we're going, which is why I love Becky Hill. I'm telling you. Just take them back to Becky. She will always give you a banger and then here's what she's gonna do. And you're like, man, I really wish there was like an orchestra version of that song. Well, she's released it. Oh, well, I really wish there was like an acoustic version. She will release it. She will give you every single version you could hope for of a song. When she releases a single, it's never alone. It always comes with every alt that you can ever imagine. And I'm like, thank you.
00:40:54
Speaker
She's like, you want a genre? what gen Give me a genre. I'll put it out there. Give me a genre. Give me a genre. Oh my God. I love that. Am I speaking to Becky's biggest fan right now? You might be. And I didn't know that until just now. And so I had no idea it was such a stand until this moment. And I am a little mortified, but I'm trying not to be. No, I love that. And I hope that she sees this. And I hope that she hears this episode. And I hope that she reaches out to you with a personal concert. Oh my god, well, she's coming to LA later this year, I saw, and I'm definitely gonna buy tickets even though I can't go. Yeah, just support. Just support the artist. Support the artist. I wanted to come back. Are you seeing any concerts this year? Have you have you seen any or are like going to see any? i'm gonna see I'm gonna see Tanner. It's more so me waiting on my friends to get their acts together. um Get your asses up.
00:41:46
Speaker
I don't like doing things by myself. I wish I was one of those fear people that could just like buy a ticket and be like, I'ma go. go oh yeah yeah Never, i won't I won't go, I won't have a good time, I won't enjoy it. I won't make friends later. If there's not a food table, this is just a fun fact about me, because I do have such like a ah big, bright, bubbly personality. hi Painfully shy when I'm in areas that I've never been before. I feel that. Yeah. Yeah. If you were to invite me somewhere and I didn't have an anchor there and you're the host, so you're like doing your thing, I will be next to the food. And so I was like, because everyone has to come to the food. Everyone will pass the food section. They will talk to the person standing next to the food. I can give commentary on what's good. And then maybe you you meet someone you can anchor yourself to. They can like take you around the party. But that's smart. Yeah. But if there's no food, I don't go.
00:42:39
Speaker
Oh, my God. I love that. No, that's ah that's a fun fact about you, though, to like know that you're kind of shy. And when you're in a new in a new place. Yeah. Oh, my God. It's 100 percent. Yeah. And in places I don't know. Did you have you did you get to see Renaissance last year? Was that last year? I did. yeah But I have a very controversial, controversial opinion about Renaissance part one. ah ah Do you dare share it publicly? ah yeah will ah I Oh, my God. But your Renaissance part two stand that I hated Renaissance part one. I thought it sounded like pots and pans. Like literally, I'm like Beyonce made a gay friend and they made an album together. And I was like, I am not interested in the slightest. It sounds literally like people are in a room every song.
00:43:30
Speaker
even even with alien super star and someone has a pot in a pan it's like dang lady the whole time and i'm like start to finish and yes when i went to renaissance i went because i love a theme i went because you know Taylor Swift was having her heiress moment Beyonce was having her Renaissance moment and I felt like I had to choose because I was like, this is going to be our generation's Woodstock. You know what I'm saying? Oh, yeah. If we don't go to this, we will have missed out. And I'm so glad I did because I went to the concert. I tried. Like I said, I tried listening to the album before so I would know some of the songs didn't work. They were not digestible for me. It was all skips. I could be lying. There could be one song that I'm just not remembering.
00:44:12
Speaker
Like, but also, I don't go to the club. Maybe I'd like it in a club setting. um Sure. really Like, but walking around the house, it was not an album for me. At Club Renaissance, though, I became a believer. I left the tour. I was blown 80 different ways. I left the tour. I was like, this is my new favorite album. This is the greatest this greatest thing that's ever been created. I caught the vision. I understood. I was baptized in Beyonce. Renaissance, part one of it all. A week later, after that wore off, I was like, okay, I can't listen to this anymore. But I did, for a solid week after Experience in Renaissance, borderline worship that album, because it is brilliant, and it is yeah it's just not my everything found.
00:44:56
Speaker
And that's okay. That's it. That's the thing that is missing from the conversation of music right now is that everyone feels like if you don't like something, you're a hater, you suck, you don't have taste or whatever. It's just that no, it's impossible. Not everyone has the same taste. In fact, it would make it very boring if we all have the same had the same taste. Exactly. I mean, you do have an incorrect opinion about that album. and i'm I am Because I saw the light, I didn't stay in the light. Because I saw it and understood it, I understood I was wrong. You understood. I was painfully wrong, but I was only right for a week and now I'm back. That's right. That's right. That's right. You were blinded, too much light. Too much light. I'm like, too much light. Everybody's ready for the light. And so I was really grateful when Beyonce was like, Devin,
00:45:45
Speaker
Devanway, I understand baby that you needed something different and she created cowboy carter and she said that for me She said she said it verbatim. That was it. That's actually if you play American Requiem backwards, that's exactly what she's saying And we'll tell you my favorite songs from cowboy car if it's about American Requiem and it is right at the end you know spell of the entire I don't have a favorite song there is no such thing I've never actually been able to listen to that album song individually I've only ever played it and listened to it straight through every time I've listened to it and yes I've listened to it about 10,000 times like the limit does not exist that's not exist a perfect album and for me
00:46:38
Speaker
Thank you, thank you, thank you for all those songs. And I don't want to throw shade on any other artists, specifically any other artists who drops a lot of music at one time. um But there was not one song on Beyonce's Calvin Carter album that

Underrated Songs and Emotional Connections

00:46:55
Speaker
wasn't Purposeful, you know that didn't have a place that didn't have it every single song I knew exactly why I was there and I knew why There were so many of them, you know, like she was giving us history. She was giving us culture. She was giving us a lesson She was giving us like new and old sounds merge. She was giving like a
00:47:16
Speaker
We were but through the decades, you know, it was not a country album, but she was telling people it was okay to experience country. It's also okay to experience jazz and like, whatever y'all y'all was, like, you know, like, it's okay to go through all these things and allow it to be patriotic even, you know, I'm like, thank you Beyonce for reminding us that we do actually live in a really amazing place, the US. We may have like leaders who are like yeah frustrating and policies that are like, oh, but like when they think about the US compared to the entire world,
00:47:54
Speaker
We're like, we still have so much privilege, even if we suck right now. You know, like, even if we suck right now. And so to get this album yeah that I felt was like such a gift and kind of like this healing balm to kind of like an irritated people, American people. It was really good. Now I'm ready to have their cowboy boots on. yeah Everyone's like ready to go and like have like similar moments in life. And i'm um I love it. I'm so grateful for Beyonce for doing that. Yes, I I love that you said that you can't just like go and pick out a song from the album. that You have to listen. to I'm not kidding you. I'm the same way. I feel yucky and guilty if I did because I i tried a couple times where I was like, I'm just going to go listen to Yaya or I'm just going to go listen to, you know, just for fun or whatever. And I'm like, this feels incorrect. I
00:48:46
Speaker
have to go from American Requiem and go all the way to Amen. And man it's it's the it is a perfect album. Cowboy Carter for me this year is the best album that has been released. And I have a hard time believing that I'm going to stand anything else as hard as this. Well, do you want to know there is a second best album that was also released? Give it to me. Tori Kelly. da I just want to say this like. ye I'm so proud of her. And if I had an honorable mention for the island, Tori Kelly right there immediately. What a fucking beautiful voice. And this out i this album is fucking good. What she did with this album, what's and I got to look up the name of the album. like it I think it's just self-titled. I think it's just called Tori. It is Tori period. She torried out. She torried out. will I hit play and I was like,
00:49:43
Speaker
when she started with that thing you do. And I was like, all right, that's groovy. And then she gave us a sound that like, I'm like, wait, Tori, you just went in and carved out, she genre blended and she carved out something that nobody's doing right now. Well, nobody's mainstream doing, I'm sure there are underground artists who've like, and oh Like, I was like, thank you for throwing it back, but also making it current and present. And I really wish more people would have fallen into it because it's brilliant.
00:50:15
Speaker
a brilliant album. And I have to say, when she was doing the promo tour for the album, and that thing you do came out, and she had no business all of a sudden being like, Oh, let me just throw out some choreo for you that I've been capable of doing this whole time, whole time, whole time, I was just like my jaw hit the floor. I was like, Oh, my God, Tori Kelly is that girl is that girl. And you know, here's the thing too. I think what happened is she stopped trying to be what she thought everyone was praising her for. you know Way back in the day when, what does she have? that She had that song. Anyways, that album that made her like famous. right and She won like album i mean ah New Artist of the Year and all that stuff. like and if she fell into it She just disappeared. like yeah you know if People were like, what happened what happened what happened? I was like, well, when you're that Christian and you're that, like you don't belong to yourself.
00:51:08
Speaker
You know, it's really cool to see Tori take her time, figure out she didn't throw away all of her beliefs. She didn't like, you know, do this massive switch up. She didn't need to like, she just took time to understand who she was and what she wanted to do for her. Yeah. And she released an album about it. And I was like, You're like, wow, you you feel free to me. You know yeah feel free. And then are we going to talk about Bridge Over Troubled Water? like Have you seen the the like recording session that they did? You're talking about with John Legend? No, I so i was talking about the when she was recording the yeah like recording the song with Jacob Collier in her home. And she was like, I have an hour. And and they are doing all this stuff.
00:51:52
Speaker
Like watching that and then hearing the final version, I was like, what, first of all, what a vision of Jacob's to be like, here's what I want you to do for all of this. And then she's just like, but then her like doing it and doing all of these runs, all these riffs. Like this sitting down. Sitting down. Yeah, just like you and I talking. Yeah, and then and like watching her being like, oh, that's really hard I don't know if I can do it and then she just does it like as if like i overly immediately she's like, where's the breath? And I'm like, yeah, I was just hours. Here's some extra like, no, okay, so I'm glad you've seen that. Yeah, everybody needs to watch it.
00:52:29
Speaker
Her, John Legend and Jacob just released a live, they have this live performance. Oh, I haven't seen it yet. It's like eight minutes long. And okay it starts with Jacob doing his like, cool, like, I'm the god of music thing he does. And then John comes in and um um John, he's hit or miss for me. Like, he's got this song called Nervous. It is such a banger. But it 100% falls into my my genre of music. I love John for that song. Everything else, I'm like, I don't really care, John Legend. and ah sure He comes in and he starts singing. And I mean, I was watching the video like this.
00:53:09
Speaker
in my house like Literally, like but I was like, John, and she puts us in purgatory. You know what I'm saying? Purgatory. You suck there because it is Manda Tori that y'all watch this. And I am sitting there like, yeah Just like, what is even happening? What did you just do to us, Tori Kelly? What did you just do to us? And then you listen to it with headphones and it's like this. You know? Yeah. and It's spiritual. It feels spiritual. I'm just gonna keep going back to that.
00:53:48
Speaker
It is. No, for sure. she it Have you seen her? So Jacob Collier on that album did a song called Witness Me. okay And that features Shawn Mendes, I think Stormzy, and then Kirk Franklin. Yes. Stunning song. And then she did the live version of that with him. I think that she took Shawn's place because he couldn't make the performance or whatever. I don't think it was on Jimmy Kimmel. and They replaced them in the album now. yeah I was like, uh, I was like, release this. he's I did see it on Jimmy Kimmel. And ah just like, she is phenomenal.
00:54:28
Speaker
Phenomenal. On her album, um her duet with

Gratitude and Reflections

00:54:31
Speaker
John Bellion as well, I think it was Young Gun. Yeah, here, I can tell you it's right in front of me. um yeah Young Gun. That song is beautiful. And all of it is so good. It's so good. And I do and Bruce cut Yes. Oh God. Oh my God. It's so just like early. And that's like probably my, one of my favorite times of music was like the early Y2K era. And that is exactly what a callback to. It's like that early dark child Timbaland, you know, just like that Y2K sound. And she did it flawlessly, flawlessly. And you know, it was interesting because I was, I mean, in the early 2000s, I was a child. So I didn't really get to experience the way like life felt simple. that came to music back then. There was like, social media wasn't really around, cell phones weren't really around, it was like, it throws you back to being in a car with people, with like, you're actually not connected to the world, you're just connected to your moment. And everything's moment, when you're at the grocery, you're at the grocery, when you're in the car, you're in the car, family's family, like friends are friends. And the album like, sonically took me back there, and I was like, oh, it makes me crave
00:55:44
Speaker
that with like, it's like adventure and escape, but also in my day to day. Is that exists? And I was like, Oh, 100%. Yeah, it just takes you back. to it It was it was a much simpler time. Like, I just remember like you, you had the radio, you had MTV, and you had you know, going to the record store and going to the CD store. And then, and that was how you consumed your music. You didn't have an algorithm and everyone, you know, playing the same 15 second snippet over and over again. Well, Devin, this brings us to our final segment of the show. oh I like to, I like to end every episode with a song that we don't talk about enough. Do you feel like you have a song that we, it's just not part of the discussion that is not talked about enough?

yeah but Give it to me. I okay. Okay. Hold on. I guess I'm contemplating whether or not to say this song, which is Probably my favorite song of all time. Okay, so my favorite song of all time is The Devil Went Down to Georgia by the Tarly Daniels Band. Yes. I know it's start to finish. I think it is brilliant. There is fiddles. He is essentially rapping. It is like, it takes you on an emotional journey. It is life. It is death. It is overcoming the devil. It is like, it is fun. It is high paced. It is... All things. It is such a fun song. And it gives you an iconic scene in Coyote Ugly. Can we talk about Coyote Ugly? Please. I mean, we can. They need to make another one. Coyote Ugly was so empowering. You know, it's like burlesque. You know, I was like... Yes. I'm like, that feels like queer culture to me. I'm like, you want to know what helped make me gay? Was watching women be so in their bodies dancing on bars, kicking like...

They were talented, they were beautiful. They were like, light bars on fire and I was in love. you know And I was like, do I want to be you or do I want to be with you? And I'm like, keep it all the same you know and just make me another movie just like that. And then, um so my second song is because all these women make me ah feel this way. Oh, it's Week by SWD. ah Oh my gosh, it makes you weaken the knees. ho oh Oh my gosh. And you know what's funny though? ah Is that my supervisor today mentioned SWV, like as we were like leaving our team meeting, like I got it came out of nowhere too. And I was like, Oh my God, that's a VV. What?

But probably agree. And and you might agree. I will say I'm not a huge fan of this artist, but this song in particular is one of my favorite songs in recent years. And it's a permanent staple on my summer playlists specifically. To me, it sounds like a sunset at night. It is, you know, you're are like lounging at the beach. It's a sunset. Oh, it's so good.
