Podcast Returns: Recent Events Overview
00:00:11
Speaker
All right, we're back with another episode of The Barn Session. Stop. Just getting started. um We're all back in our studios and spent some rest and it's gone on since. As a matter of fact, there's a duel that just ended like an hour ago. um But yeah, I don't even know where you guys want to start if you have anywhere in particular.
New Year and Dual Season Kickoff
00:00:38
Speaker
I want to start with saying Happy New Year.
00:00:41
Speaker
Happy New Year. Happy New Year to our listeners, especially you, Aidan Johnson. I know you're listening. um
00:00:49
Speaker
Happy New Year. And ah happy dual season, right? Which is what we're sliding into now. ah We wrapped up 2024.
Tournament Highlights: Soldier Salute & Midlands
00:01:03
Speaker
And well, actually, we have one more tournament coming up, but the Soldier Salute and Midlands both went down and some kind of interesting things happened. And I think there's I think most of the discussion around the two talk about kind of the change in what's happened with these holiday tournaments. So but I don't want to talk about the results first.
Why Didn't Ferrari and Arnold Compete?
00:01:32
Speaker
um Soldier salute. ah Biggest one is no Angelo Ferrari versus Gabe Arnold. No teammate match. Ryan, what do you think is going on there?
00:01:49
Speaker
I mean, did we ever think did we ever think that match was going to happen? I if i figured if it would happen, ah Ferrari would be forfeiting Gabe Arnold. Or if it would, if it wouldn't have, I mean, you know, you know what I'm saying? I figured it would have been the opposite. Yeah. Yeah. No, I, I knew exactly what you're saying. I, I mean, I don't know. I don't get any, but I don't understand the whole, all the underclassmen forfeits to the upperclassmen stuff. Well, what made them decide that Gabe was going to forfeit it to
00:02:25
Speaker
That's a mystery.
Tournament Results and Wrestler Performances
00:02:27
Speaker
I don't know if there's a coin flip of rock, paper, scissors. Maybe there was an actual injury. Who knows? Who knows? It'd be interesting if it was rock, paper, scissors. One of life's many mysteries. Um, I guess, yeah, like if, if they did just go out there and and put Gabe Arnold out and get his hand raised, I guess I'll, there'd be fewer people asking, than asking like, what's going on here? Cause it's weird. It is weird to.
00:02:55
Speaker
Have your non-starter take a forfeit to your redshirter, or have your starter take a forfeit to the kid that's redshirting. But I actually, the thing that I liked the most from this one was 197. A couple of interesting things happened.
00:03:15
Speaker
But Steven Buchanan took first, Aidan Sinclair took second, ah Cody Merrill took third, and then Isaiah Salazar took fourth. So Salazar went into this weekend, ranked fifth, I'm not sure where he's at now, but he lost to Aidan Sinclair in the semis, and then be cody or lost to Cody Merrill for third.
Weight Class Debates and Team Decisions
00:03:37
Speaker
um And Cody Merrill, I think this is, i think this is a very promising sign of his career as an individual and the development that is going on in the Oklahoma State Room now. Holding Steven Buchanan to a 2-0 match and beating Isaiah Salazar, pretty good. And I have to guess the discussion is that he could be an 84-pounder. I don't know. I thought they wanted him at heavyweight.
00:04:11
Speaker
Yeah, no way I kind of did too But I mean he's You're saying no way to have no way he goes heavy weight. I think he'll stay at 197 I think they I think he'll speed 190 I think it'll be 197 for sure at least until he's a senior and I mean then Maybe he could be a heavyweight if he decides to bulk Yeah, I mean how how how big does he really need to get 230 he's just like really dude he is not big like Height-wise, yeah. Yeah. Sure. I do have like. 97 is going to be perfect for him. Yeah, because that also makes sense with Braden Thompson is going to be 84. Well, or yeah Jersey Rob, maybe. He had a really good comment. And then I think ah I think it'll flip-flop, right? If one of them goes 84, the other will go 74. Oh, yeah. Maybe. Maybe. Who knows, dude, because they're going to be getting crazy recruits.
Kennedy's Potential vs. Ferrari
00:05:13
Speaker
true. That is true. um
00:05:17
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, Kennedy blades look phenomenal. Okay, so kale Peterson was up at 133. And that's if you've realized anything aside from so Kennedy blade Merrill. What? Why? did Why did you bring her up? I say, did I say Kennedy? Yes, you did 100%.
00:05:38
Speaker
Patrick we knew what I know I knew one hunt I knew exactly what you're not I just was I was gonna let you wallow in it I Mean she didn't she also take first though. Did she wrestle? I didn't pay attention to i think she any of that which I feel bad because I Like it all I like all of the wrestling. I just didn't I I was honestly I watched a few matches from the Salute. I watched his zero matches from Midlands. Damn. I was out. I was out. How do you watch it? How do you watch Midlands? Both Big Ten Plus. I did not resubscribe to Big Ten Plus this year. The only reason why I even got to see some of the Soldier Salute matches is because we were watching some of them here. Yeah.
00:06:28
Speaker
Well, not my own. Plus you and I posted like all of their wrestlers matches from Soldier. So that was cool of them. That was cool. Nice. Yeah. um No, but i so Kennedy, Patrick Kennedy almost did it again. Patrick Kennedy took first and and looked really good. I think he might end up being the guy, which is I think Patrick Kennedy is going to be the guy and Angelo Ferrari.
00:06:57
Speaker
I I won't I won't understand that that one won't make sense to me. Why? I don't I really don't think I'm not I guess I'm not that high on Ferrari. I don't think that he is a that he would be able to perform better in a in a margin that is great enough to burn that red shirt and ah cost Gabe Arnold a year because if that's the case, then Gabe Arnold should have just gone straight out last year, right? They needed a guy at his weight. Sure.
00:07:26
Speaker
You're right. So, I mean, what are they doing?
Team Spot Concerns and Redshirting Decisions
00:07:30
Speaker
I mean, Kennedy's back next year, right? Angelo, yeah, yes. It's a log jam. It's a log jam. Some, either they're all going to stay or someone's going to leave. It's a log jam. But listen, if your Tom Brands and Angelo Ferrari is coming into your office telling you he wants to be the guy this year, he doesn't want to register. He wants to go. What do you do?
00:07:54
Speaker
Um, I don't know because you think if that's the case, well, I guess it depends on your philosophy, right? If you're a coach that says, well, you have to go out and earn it, right? Then vo that that that could have very, very easily been decided on the mat there. And if that is the case, and Gabe Arnold said, I'm not wrestling him. Well, then you give the spot to Ferrari, but I don't think that's the case. Is Gabe coming down to 74?
00:08:21
Speaker
No. Why? I mean, why would they? unless he's gave truly believes that he's better off at that weight class. He has 74. He has said it. He has said it in the past that he is too short for a 184. He is better off at 74. He has said Gabe Arnold at 184 is. He is probably the fourth best guy. Mm hmm. I don't know about that. Gabe Arnold at 174 in the country. Gabe, I would make you say that.
00:08:53
Speaker
I mean, I think so. I think you have Storachi and Kekeisen, Dustin Plott, and then he can beat McInnelly, Berge. He can beat those guys. Can he? I don't know. I think so. I think he can. I don't know. I mean, he can, but probably. I'm not so sure about probably. You know who I give, who I would think would beat them before Gabe Arnold does? Angelo Ferrari. Angelo Ferrari would do it.
00:09:23
Speaker
This is just a difference of opinion. This is what's going on here. Yeah. Yeah. I just think it's kind of styles. I think his. I think the stronger the guys are, the harder it is for Gabe, but it's not as hard for a guy like Angelo Ferrari. Okay. I think I just think Macanelli and Berge can potentially be plot. Certainly Macanelli. Oh, Macanelli. Yes. Berge. I don't know. Maybe not Berge.
00:09:53
Speaker
but the the Berge the Berge stock I'm whole I'm holding right now, but like man I'm ready to Sometimes there are days where I'm like, yeah, he's he's pretty yeah up and down Dude SDS you the guys they sent the soldier salute looked really good No, you're right.
Kansas Wrestlers' Performance
00:10:11
Speaker
Yeah, they did um did Did that do did that do pill kid Russell I Think so. No 49 49 57 there I think you do. What's his name? Carson. Do not. car Is it Carson? I don't know. Well, he's got a brother, too. That's going to SDSU. I can't remember which one's which. I just know the big ones at forty nine. Fifty seven. You beat Sarbo last year.
00:10:39
Speaker
Colin do pill. Colin. That's right. How do you he wrestled at the soldier salute? Yeah, yeah. How do you do? Let me. I know. Hang on. Well, you asked if he was there. Let me log in to Russell's that. Oh, you can just check the bracket on track, can't you? Oh, it is on track. I was thinking that it was. Yeah, they moved it over. They took it off smooth comp and moved it over the track. He went one and two and then the soldier salute silver matches. He won all of those. Oh, they put him in some silver bracket. Yeah.
00:11:16
Speaker
He lost to connor fo or Carter Fussek and Miguel Estrada on day one.
00:11:24
Speaker
Shout out to... Sorry, speaking of other guys, I guess this is kind of on the same page, but Dylan Elmore, he looked good. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Kansas boy. ah Kansas boy. And then his teammate and fellow Kansas boy, Nick Traster, was also there. I think he had a tougher showing though.
00:11:45
Speaker
Yeah, like three and two or something. Yeah. And then two Aquinas kids. Two Aquinas. No. Yeah, yeah. Sima. Yeah. Sima was there. Yeah. And Sima Sima took third at 174. He lost to Danny Wask. Probably a match that he can win. But yeah.
00:12:07
Speaker
I think that was all the Kansas kids. Maybe. Maybe I'm missing one. Not sure. um
00:12:18
Speaker
What was that dude Sorry, I was pulling this mic off cuz I'm tired of bending down over. Sorry. I know that made a crazy noise probably. Yeah All right, but I got I'm gonna have to hold this thing cuz I'm tired. I can't now you're very long How about now that's much better I had a question about
00:12:47
Speaker
I had a question about 133 and 125.
Weight Class Strategy: Tom Brands' Response
00:12:52
Speaker
Kale Peterson up at 133. They asked brands about it. And then he gave kind of an interesting answer. It was something like, we're gonna keep this one close to the chest. What's going on, right? Nothing. Okay. He answered the question with, we're gonna keep this one close to the chest or something like that. Like like that's, we we won't talk about that yet.
00:13:17
Speaker
Uh, are they, is a, all are going to try and drop to 25? No, no zero chance of that. I think he's, I don't know. I honestly, I don't think so. If he could, do you think he would? I mean, I think he probably could right now. I don't think he's going to. He's wrestling really well at 33. Do you think he wouldn't wrestle so well at 25? Who would, who would go at 33 Shriver?
00:13:48
Speaker
Seemed like I mean maybe kale Peterson would probably go at 33 Trevor. Yeah Do better a 33 Shriever wrestled. I thought he was at 41 weekend. Maybe that's what it was. Yeah Shriever's up now there was writer eventually writer block at Originally, he's 41, but he, I think he's, he was banged up or maybe struggled to get back down to weight. I don't know. But originally the plan was before Drake announced he was going up that everyone thought it was going to be Drake 25 KL 33. Right. So, um,
00:14:31
Speaker
Yeah. And then, uh, Daniel Cardenas won 157. He was at the soldier salute, I believe, because Midlands doesn't allow on attached. Right. ah Midlands is so weird now. Yeah. ah and We can do you want to get into that now, dude. That's I'm kind of. That's funny. You said that because the whole FRL crew was like, whoa, why would you go to soldier salute?
00:14:59
Speaker
and not Midlands with the rest of your team. Oh, kind of weird. Well, maybe you should look into that, like questioning. I don't know. It was so weird. It was like insinuating something that there was some kind of disconnect there. I don't know. But that explained disconnect. There was no unattached wrestlers at Midlands this year, was there? I think they just didn't know that that was the case, then they obviously. Yeah. it's it and But I thought it was just so weird how they would like, who cares?
00:15:28
Speaker
whether he goes, right I mean. Yeah, it doesn't matter. I mean, well, and and that is the case is Midlands is trying to they've been trying to make it a true invite. Yeah. You know, and yeah, I mean, they're ruining it. They're killing the tournament. So well, here's what needs to happen. There needs to be at most two holiday tournaments.
00:15:56
Speaker
Probably shouldn't have them on the same weekend. So if you're getting rid of Midlands, OK, soldier salute and southern scuffle. Cool. I think this is the scuffle even going to be anything. That was another thing I went on flows page. This thumbnail, these southern scuffle precedes are or the southern southern scuffle is loaded. Basically is what they said. I looked at those precedes, dude. Oh, my God. Not even remotely close to loaded. I think.
00:16:24
Speaker
dude There's like like the mirrors, you know, some of the Penn State redshirt guys are going but like three of them. Oh, so basically, basically, they are saying that because they're and then then on on FRL, they're kind of poo pooing on the soldier salute because they're against it. No, no, they're for the soldier salute that I don't know why they I really have no idea why they they weren't.
00:16:52
Speaker
No, I had nothing to do with the soldier suit because did they covered the soldier salute way more than they did Midlands? But they were like, dude, they seem they seem they seem so much more interested. Yeah, 100 percent of salute the Midlands. and I was like, I so I did the math. So then why were they shitting on teams for not? I don't know. I the cardiness thing was so weird to me.
Tournament Comparisons: Participation & Coverage
00:17:14
Speaker
Yeah, because they're idiots, because I didn't know and they're idiots. Yeah.
00:17:19
Speaker
So I did I did some math on like the number of ranked wrestlers compared in comparison for Midlands and Scuffle. um Midlands at at every weight, it was seven, five or six, three, sevens, three, sixes, four, fives, as far as how many so kids were ranked on Intermath rankings. Soldier Salute was two, one, two, four, three, two, four, one, three, two. They just had these really high ranked guys, guys that wrestled for Iowa or, you know, just they had high level competition, but there was not much competition. No, there weren't really very many super interesting matchups. um You had Sparks and Sparks and Kennedy. That was a great match. And then you had um ah McNeil and Parko.
00:18:11
Speaker
And then watching Coder hand Russell, like that, that was and one 97 because Merrill and, uh, Sinclair who aren't ranked, you can say that's a much more interesting bracket. Sparks and Kelly, you know, that's what you meant. You really just, you were just doing Kennedy so dirty, dude. I'm sorry, Patrick, please don't hurt me. Um,
00:18:34
Speaker
But and maybe I actually I know this is the reason I feel so strongly about this is because Indiana wrestled in Midlands. um And so I was like very invested in what was going on in Midlands because Indiana did pretty well. ah But then like Indiana did amazing. they They did. They did all right. Like it was ah it was a step in the right direction. But we can get into that later. It just felt weird that like You had a lot of mid level competition, like guys who in the rankings are low 20s in the teens, high 10s, high single digits. Like that's the that's the level of competition that you had. um So it wasn't your stars, but it was a lot of guys who are in that all American level of ranking, so.
00:19:26
Speaker
um But yeah, we can we can get into the Midlands if you want to at least a little bit of it.
00:19:35
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, let's get into it. I want to get into it.
Weight Class Performances at Midlands
00:19:41
Speaker
125 Dean Peterson, he he beats. It's Blake West, right? One of them. Well, so there were the twins, Bryce and Drew, and this one's Blake. I don't know if they're related. I'm sure they are, but I don't know.
00:19:59
Speaker
um He started to come back in the finals against Peterson, but Peterson, I think, held on 176, something like that. Diego Sotelo took third and Jacob Moran took fourth. Pretty good bracket. ah Mark Anthony McGowan was the name that a lot of people were kind of like, where is this guy? Where where is his college performance? He's back. He took fifth. I think he took fifth and gett Max Gallagher took sixth. So this was a pretty, this bracket had a good number of ranked guys and and rankable tiered guys.
00:20:33
Speaker
And, uh, Moran and Satello split matches, uh, and then Moran stayed competitive with Dean Peterson. But, um, yeah, so like this, this was, that was a good weight, lots of competition there. I think 133, 133 might have like the matches of the tournament, maybe.
Thrilling Match: Shaver vs. Davino
00:20:53
Speaker
Uh, Shaver and Davino, I think Shaver won off of one second of writing time in writeouts.
00:21:01
Speaker
Yeah, it was, something like that it was, I think it was more than one sec. It might've been a few more seconds than one, but, um, but yeah, good match. Dude, that was one of the few matches I did get to see.
00:21:12
Speaker
Davino hits he so Shabir breaks away. Davino hits. I think it's a super duck from space as he closes the gap or some sort of level change. He like gets his head behind Shabir and then Shabir has to do some ridiculous scramble to it was it was all over social media, at least it was all over my social media, my Twitter page like.
00:21:35
Speaker
Yeah, that was fun. It was good stuff. Yeah and Other clips other clips from that match too. Like it was a good match overall I guess because I was I was literally one of the only like one of the only things I saw from that tournament I think I saw him like maybe a couple other clips but Yeah, that was that was by far the best one Yeah, I how do you feel about Shabra this year so far? Oh He's up and down I feel like And so maybe I'm only thinking about the post-season for him. But that's just kind of how he is, you know, he goes one week. What's his record? Tech following, one week he's tech following Ragasin, the next week he's getting majored by him. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And I know he had a, he had a really good post-season last year, so maybe I'm just thinking about that. He's 11 and three this year, so not terrible. He has one weird loss though.
00:22:26
Speaker
TK Davis, he lost 11 to six. That's the one. Yeah. And then he also lost to Anthony Noto and Tyler Knox. The Knox match was in the finals at Midlands. Pretty good match is tied three to three and and Knox is imminent on a takedown and Shabir tries to. Do something crazy to not give it up, but um Tyler's good. too Yeah, Tyler Knox is pretty legit.
00:22:56
Speaker
He's, I mean, you keep, you keep Crookum, Crookum bird ah ahead of him, but I think he can, I think he contend with Zeth Romney. He beat Drake Ayala, Brayden Davis. That'd be an interesting one. I don't think, I don't know. I don't, I gotta watch more Nasir Bailey, which I can do this weekend. Um,
00:23:20
Speaker
He's slumping right now. Sophomore slumping. He'll be all right. Yeah, a little sophomore slumping. He'll be fine. He'll be fine. He'll be fine. He's got a he's got a neal's two losses this weekend. Neil's going to get him right. He's going to be fine. He's got to beat Dominic Serrano and Blake Borman.
00:23:38
Speaker
um Both winnable. Yeah. 141. He just needs to find his needs to find his ah more of his offense on his feet. And he's good. He's explosive. He just needs to believe in it more. And then he's to get better on bottom. He needs to be, you know, I don't think he trust himself enough on bottom. He keeps picking neutral and these matches where he's down one zero. Yeah. Yeah. It's he's, he's got a good, he's good on top with his tilts. Don't really have to worry about that. Uh, yeah, that's 133, 141.
Midlands: 141 Weight Class Review
00:24:14
Speaker
Oh crap. Who won that?
00:24:16
Speaker
Except the guys are figuring him out, dude. The guys are figuring out that, and you know, how to beat him from bottom. C.J., yep, C.J. Composto. Was it Kross Wasoluski that he wrestled, I think? Yeah. Oh, actually, I have a bracket.
00:24:40
Speaker
Let me pull this up.
00:24:43
Speaker
Yeah. Oh, no, he'd be in the finals. He beat Joe, Joe, Olivier from Rutgers. No, Wasoluski is at the next weight. I think it was him and Abbess. um But yeah, 141, not anything crazy happened here.
00:25:06
Speaker
Yeah. Here's my problem with the Midlands now. OK. Is because it used to be this thing, but now it's not. But people still inflate it, just a little bit. And Rutgers wins this tournament and people are like, oh, is Rutgers a team? Are they a top five team? No, they're not. Dude, dude. They're not.
00:25:29
Speaker
ah Did Rutgers win it? Didn't they? I think so. they were They were winning it at one point. Whenever I was like reading all this stuff, they were basically like, oh, Rutgers looks really good.
00:25:42
Speaker
They look like top five team right now, and I'm like, No, they don't. No, they don't. No, I think. ah
00:25:51
Speaker
Yeah, I am. I will say this. Well, they're 84 pounder than because they were like when I looked, they were firmly ahead. Stanford Stanford won at 157 and records took second at 147. Oh, wow. Stanford have really put it on then. Yep.
00:26:08
Speaker
um I mean, yeah, they had a, they had a good finals with Knox and Norman and boyer ah boy Lorenzo. They keep, they keep giving my boy Lorenzo the two seed. Well, he's a one seed guy. He's a one seed. He's pretty good, but I wanted to mention, um, 84 pounder records. It, it was kind of a roster battle between Saldano and Shane, uh, Cartagena Walsh. I like Shane.
00:26:42
Speaker
I'm all about it. This dude wrestles super tough for seven minutes, um, is pushing the pace the whole time. Makes, makes some mistakes, makes plenty of mistakes. Um, but he's a, he's a long, he's a long guy. He puts himself he puts himself and in a lot of fun positions. Um, and just goes out and wrestles hard. So Rutgers kid that I, had that I like to watch wrestle, um,
00:27:09
Speaker
Never even heard of him till this year, might to be honest. I felt like I heard. I feel like I heard the name because it was it's kind of a like a the name kind of sticks out, but I never I've never watched him wrestle until this year, so. um Yeah, he was a lot of fun. He lost to Pittsburgh. Heller. Reese Heller in the finals. Yep. Yep.
00:27:37
Speaker
Uh, back down to one 49. Jaden Abbess wins this 10 nine decision in the finals over cross Waslewski, who's having a pretty good year. Uh, I want to say.
00:27:54
Speaker
Let me take a look at his. Uh, where's cross at Ryder? Uh, he's at Penn. Penn. That's where he's at. That's right. They had a good, good tournament.
00:28:06
Speaker
He's taken three losses this year.
Jayden Abbess' Return to Form
00:28:09
Speaker
Uh, Jack Joffrey, four to three, Jayden, Avice, 10, nine, and Canaan Webster, eight to seven. So. Oh yeah. Got to keep an eye on. Yes. I did. He was good. He was good when he was in high school. He was good last year when he was gray shirting or whatever. Yeah. He's tough. Yeah. Yeah. yeah He kind of came on. He kind of came on. Um, his senior year, like in the fall, his senior year. Yeah. Yeah.
00:28:36
Speaker
Yeah, he'll be he'll be fun to watch. um
00:28:42
Speaker
Yeah, this was a good way. Abbess is ah looks like he's starting to put it all together again. And, you know, positioning, poisoning himself for a good finish of the year. A return to the podium. Another trip to the podium.
00:29:02
Speaker
um Yeah, OK, 157.
Johnny Lovett's Victory and Career
00:29:10
Speaker
ah Johnny Lovett took out DJ McGee. I was I had kind of forgotten about DJ McGee f after seeing him beat ah the Minnesota wrestler at 57 last year. Well, Johnny Lovett's been in college for a thousand years. Johnny Lovett's been around for a while. He got a Midlands title. He might get another one. Block. one
00:29:37
Speaker
They are ah ju introducing the no no no no, no, no, no, no, no, no, there's been a new development.
00:29:47
Speaker
There's been a new development, Sammy. Go on. You can get a fifth year of NCAA eligibility.
NCAA's Fifth-Year Eligibility Impact
00:30:02
Speaker
Why? I don't know, but they're they're going to allow for kids to have five years of NCAA eligibility.
00:30:14
Speaker
This is gross. It's happening. And I saw Tony Ramos quote the tweet and said, eventually, as long as you're enrolled and working towards some kind of degree, they'll let you compete in college for as long as you want.
00:30:28
Speaker
dude college football would make some scholars some guys with like 10 degrees you think 30 think about the NBA dying right now think think about college basketball dude dude college basketball would flourish in my opinion i might be wrong i i mean i think I guess maybe the numbers don't support it, but I feel like college basketball is so much more entertaining than the NBA right now. I think the numbers do support it. Dude, you know, NBA's viewership from last year to this year is down 48%. As it should be. That's a huge number. That is a big number. That is, ah you almost cut your audience in half. That's that's
Sports Viewership Trends: WNBA vs. NBA
00:31:10
Speaker
a huge number. but They're, we're talking, they're like on the verge of going down to WNBA numbers at this point.
00:31:16
Speaker
Well, WNBA is on the way up. They're goodnna they're gonna cross paths eventually. They're just- Thank you, Caitlin Clark. Yeah, I think that's cool. Yeah, what is she, guys? What is she again? Say it together. A woman? A woman? A Hawkeye. A Hawkeye. you You sexist animals.
00:31:38
Speaker
I thought it was like a proud thing, isn't it? I don't know. That's the way you guys said women, woman. I said it like that because I had no idea what you wanted from me. So I thought of something positive. i mean Yeah. Yeah. I wanted you to say a Hawkeye because you guys know Hawkeyes. There's no Hawkeyes in the room, right? What are you talking about? but Who here is a Hawkeye? I like him. Clearly. I like him. I think you more than like him. I love him. Yeah. I want to marry him. Okay. and Okay. I want to have a baby with her key.
00:32:17
Speaker
With who? Herki. Herki Hawkeye. Oh. Is that the mascot? The little mascot. I didn't know you guys didn't know that. Wants to be the mother of Herki's kid. Herki is seed.
00:32:41
Speaker
That is what I said.
00:32:46
Speaker
That's bestiality, Ryan. Well, what can I say? I like birds.
Birthday Celebration Confusion
00:33:06
Speaker
We had we had a happy happy birthday. Happy birthday to Sammy Coakley, by the way. His birthday was yesterday. Back it off. Back it off. you You got to learn your range with this new mic, buddy. that had I wanted that one to be loud. OK. Well, it was too loud. You wanted to know when my birthday was? No, I said his birthday was yesterday. That's what I said. I thought i thought you asked it. I wanted them to know. It was yesterday.
00:33:35
Speaker
um Yeah, we were getting, we reserved a table at a, at a nice restaurant. Um, and we get there and they're closed for renovations. So we went to a pizzeria with that. they're ti Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. So you made a reservation and then got there and they were closed. They were like, they're closed until.
00:34:02
Speaker
Uh, no, I thought, I thought the sign said that they were closed until February. They're closed until Friday, which is today. So I guess they're going to be open again. Well, then I'll give them a pass. Otherwise I was going to say, why in the good Lord's name, would you be accepting reservations if you're shut down? Yeah, I don't know. But we we went there like early November. So, I mean, they couldn't have been.
00:34:26
Speaker
renovating for that long. I'm sure they did it during the Christmas, New Year season. Well, in Alabama, you can renovate all year long. Don't got to worry about that cold weather. It's going to get below freezing um here this weekend. Maybe not this weekend, but this week. We're supposed to have an epic storm up here. Yeah, and we're going to get like the just some of the cold air from it.
00:34:53
Speaker
So looking forward to that. We're going to get down to 28 degrees. Can be scary for some people. OK, back to wrestling.
Tyler Lillard's Midlands Performance
00:35:01
Speaker
165, a Hoosier, won the weight. Tyler Lillard.
00:35:05
Speaker
um He just went took out Hunter. Huh? He didn't just win the weight. What did he do? Dominated. Beat an All-American. He beat another national qualifier. I think, what was he? round Not rounded 12. Mayfield. Mayfield's tough. He's tough. I don't think he was rounded 12, was he? I don't think so. Last year? ah No, probably not. he So yeah, Tyler Lillard, five seed, took out four seed Anthony White in sudden victory. He got a stall call in sudden victory. Took out Hunter Garvin in sudden victory 63. That's a takedown. and Beat Max Mayfield in the final seven to three.
00:35:46
Speaker
Uh, Mayfield beat Evan mag in the, in the semis. Ooh, is an injury defaults. Let me take a look here. He was winning. Max Mayfield. Oh, he was up 22 to nine, dude. Yeah. He was, he was winning that much. I didn't know that it got that bad, but I knew at one point he was. All right. So let me, let me, let me read the scoring here. So it's tied four to four after the first with a pair of takedowns and escapes. Max Mayfield scores seven.
00:36:14
Speaker
uh in the second period mag scores five so it's it's nine to ah it's 11 to nine going into the third period max mayfield in with 30 seconds left in the matches scored 11 points in the third period escape takedown picks bottom escape takedown three near fall 22 to nine injury default but that evan mag guy he he was up big on julian ramirez Uh, at the George Mason tournament a couple of weeks ago. And then of Ramirez caught him and pinned him late in in the match, but he, he seems like he can be a little dangerous. So somebody to keep an eye on, I guess.
00:36:57
Speaker
Um, but yeah, good, good look for the Hoosiers. I think they have their 6,500 now. Um, didn't you say that guiltures trying to come down to 57?
00:37:10
Speaker
ah I don't know. I haven't wrestled um Bryce Lowry, who was 157 at the beginning of the year. So I don't really know what the plan is. I don't know. Isn't Bryce a freshman, though? He's a redshirt freshman. Oh, OK. Yeah. So I don't know what the plan is.
Speculating Wrestlers' Weight Class Changes
00:37:31
Speaker
ah if If he is dropping down to 57, that might be the best move. I don't know. What do you mean you don't know? You literally stated it.
00:37:39
Speaker
Like you knew something. When did I say this? In a text said Gilch 157. Unless I dreamt of this. I got to scroll. I hate scrolling.
00:38:01
Speaker
Um. Yeah, maybe. Right here.
00:38:11
Speaker
I don't want I don't want to show. Oh, well, geez, man. I don't want to show all the messages. But yeah, you said right here Gilch to 157 there. Everyone can see that. Sammy typed it in there. And said that was probably me pondering.
00:38:33
Speaker
I remember that night, Sammy was plastered. You can't you can't take that seriously. Oh, on a and on a Monday. Nope. At 12. Yeah, he was. it was that yeah He has a problem. Yeah, dude. I was a couple hours into work and I said time time to take this at home work job. Take some take advantage of it. Five o'clock somewhere. ah For my coworkers who might be watching this, don't listen to them. I was hard at work. It's five o'clock somewhere. Uh.
00:39:07
Speaker
174, Lorenzo Norman took home the title, took out ah Alex Kramer in the semis and Nick Incantrara in the finals. and put a restrict Put some respect on my boy, Lorenzo's name.
00:39:19
Speaker
Hey, I was I was an early purchaser this season of the stock. So I purchased it the day he beat Shane Griffith. I was like, yep, this dude's this dude's legit. i I saw that. I said and right away. Oh, and then he got himself disqualified, wrestling Ben Pazooka. And I said, then I said, uh oh.
00:39:40
Speaker
But he's level headed this year so far, so he keeps that up. He will be he will be a serious ah issue for the rest of the weight, so.
Ian Bush: Performance & Family Ties
00:39:55
Speaker
184, this was the weight with Shane Cartagena Walsh. Really liked watching him wrestle. He, again, lost to Reseller in the finals. Saldana lost in the semis, but came out the back and took fourth.
00:40:10
Speaker
We beat him for third. He medically forfeited to Max Hale. ah And DJ Washington for Indiana took seventh. ah Ian Bush for what for why West Virginia took fifth. I i haven't heard the name. I don't know if it's if you know about this guy. Not bad. He's related to the Bush family. ah B-U-S-H.
00:40:38
Speaker
yeah Bush, Anheuser-Busch. Isn't that, I don't know. I don't know. He said B-U-S-H. Yeah. Yeah, George Bush, that's why, man. Okay. Marlboro. Yeah. Marlboro Bush.
00:40:58
Speaker
I would i would keep a keep an eye on this guy. Oh, he beat Gavin Cain earlier this year. He's got some solid results this year. So I think this is someone to keep an eye on. Jeb's nephew. Jeb's nephew.
00:41:12
Speaker
So it is one 97, uh, maxed out. Yeah. I'm just ignoring you maxed out. Took first, took out Gabe solars in the finals, Indiana kid, uh, who looked good. He techfold Nick Stem it in the quarters solars did, and then beat, uh, John Pozenanski nine to five to make the finals. Uh, but maxed out was just a little bit too much. The pause win is a big win.
00:41:40
Speaker
Yeah, you don't feel like stem it is No, really It's an okay win, it's not a big win not as big as when you compare it next to an all-american like john Poznaลski conversation about nickement re next it's tough I just don't think he you know, I i wouldn't consider that a I wouldn't put it on the same level as a John Poznaลski win, I guess is what I was saying. Okay. Okay. And Rhys, to answer your question, I don't think so. I think we did. No, we did. I think we definitely did. I think you guys were alike. What did we say about him? Ryan talked about how he is potentially around a 12, maybe low All-American type
Gabe Sollers' All-American Potential
00:42:23
Speaker
of guy. I could sneak in there at 197. But also, I mean, it doesn't surprise me that guy like Gabe Sollers. Tech fault him? Smashed him.
00:42:34
Speaker
It is, I mean, Gabe's good. Gabe's good last year too. He's, he's for sure round 12. All American.
00:42:45
Speaker
I don't, I, he's got some interesting match results this year. Yeah, but he's got like, there's, you watch him wrestle and you're like, all right, this guy's gonna figure it out. He's right there. Like, you know what I mean?
00:42:57
Speaker
Yeah, I agree. But ah also, I still don't think he's got it figured out. I watched his finals match against Stout and it's like you should be able to. You should. You should. OK. Yeah, he's got he's got some interesting losses. He's lost to Luke Cochran, Camden, McDaniel, Zach Brown, those are.
00:43:17
Speaker
Bronigold's okay. And then Boston J.T. Davis from Lehigh. So, Sollers, Sollers, he's got plenty of time, but but it's also the big 10 dual season, so if you are gonna need any time to figure it out, figure it out quickly, so. It'll be just fine. Yeah, Evan Bates. ah So this one's kind of interesting. He lost to Dylan Bechtold in the quarters. um But comes out at the back and takes third. Pins, stem it for third.
00:43:48
Speaker
But Bechtold loses to sudden sudden victory to stem it. I don't know. Kind of a weird switch route there. ah Because I was kind of thinking Bates would make the finals. season He looked ah really good at CKLV. But yeah. And then lastly, Josh Heintzeman's back at 285.
00:44:12
Speaker
Take out, takes out Jacob Bullock in the finals, pretty close match. Bullock, uh, be Slavik kuski in the semis. So like another finalist for Indiana, another good performance. Um, yeah, this bracket falls off kind of hard after those three guys though. Um, yeah. So I am kind of curious because I felt like a lot of teams were participating at both of these two tournaments, but.
Team Participation Trends in Tournaments
00:44:42
Speaker
They weren't sending like their guys, you know, Missouri sent a couple of backups or registered guys to the soldier salute. Illinois sent like a couple of guys, but none of their starters. I don't think to, to Midlands. Um, I know that.
00:45:01
Speaker
Minnesota and maybe SDSU had a pad, like a sickness issue. Um, and that that was a reason for, or the given reason, but like, what is the deal with, cause Illinois didn't go to it. They didn't go to CKLV. They, I don't think they're going to Midlands or they're not going to scuffle. So what's their tournament this year? And are they not doing a big tournament? I don't know. This is, it's weird to me. Everyone has their own process now.
00:45:30
Speaker
I guess it kind of seems like. Do you think the coaches. Kind of take this holiday season to as like ah a break and a little bit of a reset between tournament season, quote unquote, and dual season? I am i don't know. That seems silly to me, but I don't know. Just it just feels like I live in a lot of activities shuts down.
00:45:58
Speaker
Yeah, and i like I said, I don't get it, but I also live in a different world, so. Yeah. I don't know. I. Yeah, because I want to see and and I think bare minimum, you need to change how many tournaments are wrestling during this holiday time. You need to drop it from three to two, maybe even one. Like imagine one tournament. You don't have a scuffle.
00:46:27
Speaker
You don't have the Midlands, you just have soldier salute.
Tournament Nostalgia: Midlands & Southern Scuffle
00:46:29
Speaker
Life was, life was fantastic when it was Midlands and Southern Scuffle and they were both awesome. Life was perfect. Cause like Penn State would go to the Scuffle, Oklahoma State would go to, I'm pretty sure. Um, Iowa would go, Iowa, Wisconsin, like, I mean, cornel it was just a different time. Missouri would either go to one or the other and Virginia Tech would go to one or the other and Different times, Steve. Now it's just and it's just like small tournaments, some duels, CKLV, more tournaments and duels, dual season, conference season, NCAA. So it's like, I don't know. That's because the east these athletes these days, there their motors don't go as long as some of the you know athletes from back in the day. I don't get that. I don't either. I don't either.
00:47:28
Speaker
It's our food supply. I don't know if it's a mentality thing or what it is, but... It's the chemicals. Yeah. um Are our the parents of today, are they babying their kids too much rhyme? The water is making the frogs gay. That's right. Gay. Let's chew on that.
00:48:01
Speaker
What do you guys want to go next? Let's pull up some clips of Alex Jones, baby. No. No, thank you. I want to talk about Monsanto. No,
00:48:22
Speaker
no no, no, Sammy, I don't know. I don't know. I don't know why there's been a shift in number of matches competed, you know, this generation compared to others. I don't know. I mean, it's been, slow small tournaments it's been slowly happening over time though, Sammy. Like, I mean, I've, I've noticed, it I noticed it ever since I graduated high school and been in college wrestling, like you can just see, you just see the number of matches.
00:48:53
Speaker
like every year the top guys are wrestling less and less and less I don't know I mean it it really dropped off it's it's plateaued for sure it really dropped off like after Covid because like before that you guys were still getting a lot of matches I mean you look at the like brackets at NCAA's and they're still getting like 40 matches the but It was before covered like around 2014 1516 was like guys were getting like upper 20s lower 30s maybe even mid 20s upper 20s and before that dude, I mean No one's ever gonna touch kale Sanderson's right now, but no they were getting like 40 matches some guys were getting like 40 matches like Like the best guys look at the brackets at NCAA is like in 2019
00:49:46
Speaker
I'm going to look in 2014. We can divide and conquer. All right. I'll go to 2019. I'm going to 2019. OK. So you don't inflate any numbers, right? Mine doesn't have records. What is this? Where did you get away from, Sammy? I don't know. The PDF.
00:50:17
Speaker
It should be so easy to find these things. Now it's so hard. It must be so easy, man. 2014 in Oklahoma City. Yeah, no records. So 2018.
00:50:33
Speaker
Come on, PDF. Where are you at? Where's the PDF?
00:50:41
Speaker
This is embarrassing Sebastian Rivera 30 and two Nick pitching any 34 and two. Okay. Okay. Okay. Bresser 26 and four. Spencer Lee 23 and three. that That was the most matches. Spencer wrestled in one season though. What? 26 probably.
00:51:07
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, they were averaging like 30 to 35 matches. you're right Yeah, yeah, you're right. Uh, yep. 23 and three of the year before that, he went 22 and two and then 18 and 0, 12 and 0, three and 0, and then 20 and one.
00:51:27
Speaker
Ash not 32 and 0, but they're still not, we're wrestling like not 39 to 40 Matt. You know what I mean? I mean, look, look at, look at.
00:51:37
Speaker
Barry Davis, dude, Barry Davis is the most winningest Iowa wrestler of all time and no one will ever touch his wins. No one. but see yeah It's like a hundred and so ah it was something crazy. It's something so ridiculous. You're like, that's just not right. Barry cheated. Just kidding. Shout out, Barry Davis.
00:52:03
Speaker
Please don't come very Davis college wrestling record. 162 and nine dude. No one's ever going to touch that. I don't even know if I got 162 wins in high school. 160. Well, I mean, yeah, but that's totally different. 162 and nine. That's 171 matches total.
00:52:32
Speaker
Wow. That's crazy. It took them four years to do that. I did it one summer.
00:52:39
Speaker
I'm just saying there are, you know, what yeah who's going to hit that? You know what I mean? Well, now that we have five years, Ryan, we can spread the matches out over more time.
00:52:53
Speaker
Oh my goodness. They're killing. They're killing NCAA sports. I know the NCAA. I understand. No, no, no, no, no, no. They're killing it. They're killing the NCAA, dude. They're killing it. It's just going to disappear. it's ah Well, it just won't be the NCAA anymore. It'll be something else. They'll rebrand or it's going to, it's going to be dead.
Future of NCAA Amidst Changes
00:53:14
Speaker
The NCAA that we know and love that we also know is probably really corrupt. It's gone. It's gone forever.
00:53:21
Speaker
Yeah, I agree with you on that, and I'm sad about it. But maybe that's just, maybe change is good. Probably is good, because the NCAA that we know and love is, like I said, was probably pretty correct. Nah, no way, right? Reese? No way, right?
00:53:44
Speaker
He's not paying attention. You've been listening to us. No, he's been looking at old brackets. look at I was looking at the, I mean, those numbers, dude, those were good numbers.
00:53:55
Speaker
Yeah. Did you not hear anything that we said though, after that? Maybe, maybe not. I never know. Is anyone ever going to touch 162 wins in college recently? No, no. I mean, maybe now that there's five, I think, you know, five years or whatever.
00:54:17
Speaker
No, I heard you say that to me. OK. Let's go. um
00:54:30
Speaker
Yeah, I don't know. It makes me a little sad. But you got to average more than 30 matches, even if you're even if you got five seasons. Yeah, that's tough. It's true.
00:54:45
Speaker
I mean, this, this man Barry had been wrestling Monday or Tuesday and Thursday duels, and then tournaments on the Saturdays. Every week. Yeah. Do you think he did it with arms wide open? Well, I know one year he did it and he was making one 18, which was death to him almost. That's so small. Death to him. I mean, he's not, you guys know the story about him, like,
00:55:13
Speaker
getting chased down. Quitting the team and then Gabe will find them with the grocery cart, right? Like full of groceries. Yeah. Amazing story. Sounds like a nightmare. For who? Dude, you know how many matches Aspen had? 161. That's pretty good. That is good. But Ben has talked about that. What happened? Ben wrestled. He inflated his effort.
00:55:40
Speaker
Is, uh, yes. record He wrestled. He would just go to every tournament he could. He wanted to wrestle every weekend, which I'm sure Barry's record is like that, too. Yeah. I'm sure he's got multiple wins outside of the division one category. And if there's any eyes. And I would do. Do you know how many schools up here have wrestling that are having tournaments? It's crazy. I'm sure it wasn't that much different whenever he was in college.
00:56:10
Speaker
Because, and I mean, when Barry was in college, when our dad was in college, NAIA was huge. Huge.
00:56:20
Speaker
I didn't know this. Huge. When dad was in college and Fort Hayes State was NAIA, there was like over 100 in some odd schools with wrestling in the NAIA. Now there's, I mean, they're coming back up to that number, but they fell off quite a bit. That's crazy train, man.
00:56:41
Speaker
You are interested it at all. No, I mean, I am. And like, I don't know. That would be that'd be so that'd be so different. Imagine if there are 100 D1 programs. I try to imagine it. Maybe one day or never. Awesome. Here's what I want. Here's what I want. I want things to go back to.
00:57:09
Speaker
2013, 2014, 2015. I feel like that's when... Where my country going? NCAA wrestling was at its peak. It was those years. That's true. Ryan, where my country going? Hey. I reset that. I didn't say that. I know. Where my country going, Ryan? I'm not worried about my country. I'm just worried about my sport. My sport is my country. It's a reflection.
00:57:38
Speaker
Yeah. All right. Sure. I'm going to a tournament tomorrow im and say tournament.
00:57:49
Speaker
What? All right. We got to do tomorrow. A youth tournament in Southern Alabama. It's actually it's in Montgomery, so it's up north, north of here. I thought re I saw this look on Reese's face. I thought Reese was about to say, did you say Monsanto?
00:58:11
Speaker
No, Montgomery Montgomery. Uh, yep. Going to go up there. Um, coach, coach my kids and, uh, one of Katie's, uh, clients that she trains is going to be up there wrestling too. So he's seven and he doesn't like wrestling because he wants to play in the NFL. Well, what position?
00:58:35
Speaker
Well, I can tell you right now, he's at the lowest weight class in seven on seven and under or eight and under, uh, he has to bump up when he wrestles 10 and under. Well, he's small. He'll grow.
00:58:49
Speaker
Maybe, maybe. You don't think so. You don't think a guy like david David Taylor is a heed Valencia. They could have probably, you know, eventually got big enough to to play football in the NFL. Those are pretty good. They could freakish exception. went You have a child that's growing like a tree. So you also have pointing out that there are exceptions. There are exceptions. yeah That is true.
00:59:14
Speaker
But I mean, so, but that's the thing is you can have a, yeah you can be like the butlers where you have Daniel, uh, who's 170 pounds. And then you have Nate who's two 80. Oh, two 60. All of it.
00:59:29
Speaker
Yes. What are you talking about? he like yeah I know, but why'd you say it? Why'd you say it like that? i Well, you switched it to 260. I thought you were going to stick with 280, and i was going to I was going to say all of it. ah you say you say I said he's 260, and then you followed up with, and he's ah he's all of it. and because every Every single pound on that body is him. I really thought you were about to say.
00:59:52
Speaker
I really thought you were about to say 285, like heavyweight, because that's the weight he wrestled in college. And I was go and I just already had all of it queued up in my head and it came out. All right. And he was he was all of 285. He was big for a heavyweight. Was he full 285? I thought he was skinny. I don't know. I mean, maybe not a full 285, but he was he was not a small heavy. And I saw Mr. Butler at the Leavenworth tournament and he said Nathan's living in France right now.
01:00:21
Speaker
That's awesome. That's pretty cool. Shout out Nathan. Yeah. Jealous. Interesting. He figured out like when he was a sophomore in high school that he was, he was going to go to Stanford and get this awesome engineering degree. Like he already had it planned out when he was like 16 years old. I was like, that was, there's some mighty high aspirations you have, Nathan. And no he did it all. He freaking did it all.
01:00:49
Speaker
You know what Daniel would say when we were at Perler practice around the same age? I wanna fly airplanes! No, he said, Sam, there's some hot milfs at this practice.
01:01:09
Speaker
That's awesome! We would tie up for a drill! We would whisper in my ear and be like, Sam! Sam, there's some milks at this practice. Just like, dude, or we're with the same kids every week. You can't keep saying it every week. ah ah Oh, man. Dude, he he did it for years. he did that I don't know if it was a bit or if it, I don't know. but No, that's Daniel. That's Daniel Butler. Yeah, so that was, yeah.
01:01:47
Speaker
childhood, man All right, cool you guys want to wrap it up and get out of here. I think we did it Got any closing thoughts closing topics at the P Okay. Hey if you're still here listening, I hope you have a great day. Thank you for listening ah ah Do all the like subscribe in a share? Too loud Ryan too loud. All right. Thank you. Goodbye
