We just had U17s wrap up yesterday and some more international wrestling. We've got some more coming up, but really all we're talking about today is U17s.
00:00:23
Speaker
So with that, guys, well, first off, brother check. How are we doing? How do we feel? feel stupendous. feel pretty good.
00:00:35
Speaker
Cool. Okay. Yeah. Uh, with that, hey you how are you, how are you doing? People listening. Doesn't matter. doesn't matter with people I'll feel better if the people listening you know give us a little give us a little little bit of attention. you know Like that video.

Achievements in U17 Greco-Roman Wrestling

00:00:58
Speaker
it with your friends. yeah Make me feel better. Okay.
00:01:04
Speaker
You 17s. Let's start with Greco-Roman. i think you know that's That's what went down first. Let's... let's go get to that. So we had three bronze medalists and not like, not a stellar performance, but not one where I'm thinking, oh shit, things are getting worse.
00:01:25
Speaker
So, uh, things are better. How did we do last year? Well, is I thought I read something saying this is the first time we've had three medals in Greco at this, at this age level.
00:01:39
Speaker
It's true. I think, I think, is it? At U-17s? I read also. no No finalists, but we did come away with more medals than we've ever come away with. Okay.
00:01:50
Speaker
So,

Rundell Family Legacy in Wrestling

00:01:51
Speaker
kind of diversifying our diversify reach across the... the the the Yeah, we're diversifying our Greco portfolio. Exactly.
00:02:03
Speaker
ah The results, our medalists, Michael Rundell, Arsenio Kikino, and David Calkins Jr. Michael Rundell. You know, that is a member of the Rundell family.
00:02:16
Speaker
The younger brother of Jacob Rundell, who wrestled for Purdue. And also Matthew Rundell. ru yeah Who wrestled at UNC, right? North Carolina? Yeah. He was Clay's roommate momentarily. You don't remember him? Oh, yes. don't remember this all. OK, I do. Yes.
00:02:33
Speaker
He had weird stories. but you know Clay did have weird stories. yeah we

Funding and Incentives in Greco-Roman Wrestling

00:02:38
Speaker
don't have to I don't remember any of them. I do remember them being weird, though. He beat me twice. Fargo and then at the Oak Park duel.
00:02:47
Speaker
du I don't know. i also looked it up. I found out he made a world team that year. he he beat me at Fargo. I knew that. ah Which is I don't know. i don't know if this guy is related to them.
00:02:59
Speaker
Oh, he went to the same and same high school. Oak Park.
00:03:04
Speaker
River Forest. Yeah. Yeah.
00:03:09
Speaker
I don't know. what Yeah, I think so, yeah. He's from the same area, Illinois, what um is what I'm saying. I see, I see. Maybe he didn't go to Oak Park, but... but's Let me do something here. Let me do something.
00:03:22
Speaker
Because normally, what they do in ah the bios... um That's what I was doing. Yep, yep, yep. ah Yeah, Matthew, Michael, and Joshua are the siblings of Jacob Rundell, so they must all be related. there's one more.
00:03:38
Speaker
they must Or maybe he was maybe he was older than... yeah it says they're siblings and Sammy says they must be all related.
00:03:49
Speaker
Well, dude, it's crazy because they don't look similar. Or Boilermakers are liars! If you look at the two, they don't look similar at all. They don't. the Jacob and and Michael look... Jacob didn't look like Matthew.
00:04:04
Speaker
No, Matthew looks nothing like Jacob. Yeah. no You look nothing like us, Sammy. So there you go. That's just that's just patently untrue. I look in the mirror and sometimes I see Reese a little bit and I used to look a lot like you growing up.
00:04:17
Speaker
No, no, no. I'm pretty sure you were switched at birth. We picked up the wrong baby. All right. Well, then not ah it must be like the fact that we live together because there were a lot of times where we saw youth wrestling photos of me and it was like, is that Ryan?
00:04:35
Speaker
Maybe. Yeah, true. So this is true. No, don't believe it. Sometimes look at cartoon characters and I'm like, that looks like just Sammy.
00:04:47
Speaker
Really? Yeah. Bugs Bunny. Matt, Matt Groening characters, the way Matt Groening draws like his characters like in Futurama. You know, there would be certain instances where I was watching Futurama and I was like, holy shit, all these characters look like Sammy.
00:05:05
Speaker
You saying look like Zoidberg? No, no, you look like... ah The shape of their their head. Their jawline? Yeah.
00:05:16
Speaker
What's his name? the The dumb space captain who is always hitting on Mila. What's his name? I have sharp features. That's what you're saying. I mean...
00:05:27
Speaker
No, they're they're more, they're not very sharp. I'm cartoonishly handsome. Yeah, you are cartoonishly handsome. There you go. Okay. ah Back to the wrestling. Michael Rundell took a bronze medal.
00:05:41
Speaker
ah Yeah, his and his bronze medal match against Yamamoto from Japan, ah pretty pretty fun one to watch if you have the opportunity to. I would highly recommend it.
00:05:51
Speaker
Yeah. Arsenic Kikino took bronze, ah lost his first match, and then won two rounds of Repetrage and took out Tarasenko from Ukraine for third.
00:06:05
Speaker
And David Calkins Jr., who I actually... i was able to watch all of his matches live. He's got a hell of a gut wrench. If he gets if if ah he gets the passivity call and puts the person down, he is generally always able to get the turn on them.
00:06:21
Speaker
And his only loss was to... In the quarters, it was 7-5 and honestly a match that he probably... If he wrestles again, he probably could win. So... I mean, yeah. A solid performance.
00:06:33
Speaker
Top to bottom. From the... Ah! Okay, here we are. Alright, we're back. ah we We wrapped up Greco. Solid performance. Expect, you know, continued development from our Greco team.
00:06:47
Speaker
We took 10th place, I think, overall as a team.

US Wrestling: Historical Insights and Challenges

00:06:50
Speaker
I ran... Killed the team race in Greco. I can look at the exact numbers. But it was not.
00:06:58
Speaker
Close or competitive. I don't think.
00:07:03
Speaker
Oh no it was close. No okay. Iran 125 Uzbekistan 118. yeah Kazakhstan 113. I thought they. There must have a year though where they did kill it. Because I have that in my mind.
00:07:15
Speaker
what What. So at what point. Is USA Wrestling going to be like. All right.
00:07:22
Speaker
Freestyle is too big to fail now for us. like We can actually start throwing some money to Greco and and help the development of these Greco athletes more.
00:07:34
Speaker
I thought about this. I thought about this. I thought about... Because there's there's just no reason why Iran, Japan, Russia... There's just no reason that they they can do both, but we can't.
00:07:46
Speaker
There's no reason. There's literally no reason. If... if Let's say I am opulently wealthy and I just said a million dollars to anybody who can win a Greco world and or Olympic title.
00:07:58
Speaker
A million dollars. How many years do you think it would take?
00:08:06
Speaker
One cycle. 30. You think would take one cycle? 30 years? Four years. for Okay, we have four years and 30 years. 30 years. thirty people Thousand Great callback.
00:08:29
Speaker
Great callback. Oh man, that was excellent. That was excellent. What's the name of that show?
00:08:39
Speaker
Or that not show, that video. What's the of that video? price master the price master you don't know what reese is referencing go look up the price master after this episode great callback 30 that was amazing thousands and uh yeah i mean i just always thought like if you throw enough money at it will it fix the problem or do we have a deeper systemic issue in terms of we just can't make greco wrestlers that good
00:09:11
Speaker
Well, I don't know, dude, because we were like, there was a there's a dark age of freestyle, too, there for a little while. Pre-Jordan Burroughs. That's true, yeah. ah Like, Henry Cejudo.
00:09:24
Speaker
So that the 2008 area, like... Yeah, even before that, we were, I mean... so I'm so thinking like the like the years before, the couple years before that and the couple years after that weren't things, like, pretty down-to-one.
00:09:38
Speaker
yeah Yeah. As far as like, yeah,

Women’s Wrestling and International Performance

00:09:41
Speaker
we we didn't have as worlds in Greco a couple of years before that. in two thousand one Oh, five yeah it was five. I thought it was five or six. Yeah.
00:09:51
Speaker
I think 2005. I knew i I'm pretty sure it was right. It was right after like an Olympic year. I just couldn't remember which one
00:10:01
Speaker
one. 2005 world wrestling championships. ah Uh, coach Derlacher was on that team. Uh, no, it wasn't 2005. Shit.
00:10:12
Speaker
What year was it? Was it 01? I'm going to go back. I'm going to go back.
00:10:19
Speaker
Oh man. Uh, 01 we took third. Dude, there was a year that we won but wasn't it in the Yeah. 2006. Try that one. Maybe it was 2006.
00:10:32
Speaker
maybe he's two out six
00:10:37
Speaker
But I remember seeing that. I remember seeing that on the wall at the Olympic Training Center and thinking, didn't we have that post here too? It's real. Huh? We had a post. thousand second 2007. 2007. We had that post with Jermiel Byers.
00:10:53
Speaker
Jermiel Byers, Justin Lester, Brad Varing, and Durlacher, right? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
00:11:05
Speaker
Yeah. um So we've done it. We've done it. and we've We've done it within the last 20 years.
00:11:13
Speaker
You know. How did we do the next year?
00:11:17
Speaker
Huh? How did we do the nextt the year after that at the Olympics in Greco? 2008. took third in Is that you said? pretty good ah yeah
00:11:31
Speaker
2008 World Wrestling Championships was only for women's wrestling because the Olympics was going on.
00:11:39
Speaker
of True, true. So let's do this. We were 16th in 2008. Took 16th place. has it had a Not too shabby. Adam Wheeler took bronze.
00:11:54
Speaker
And yeah. Yeah. The year we won it, Durlacher was fifth, Betterman 33rd, Lester third, T.C. Dantzler second, Brad Vering second, Justin Ruiz 13th, Jermiel Byers third. no No champs, and we still won it.
00:12:12
Speaker
That's pretty impressive. Joe Warren won it the year before that. You had the GOAT on there too, Hamid Sorian from Iran.
00:12:24
Speaker
That dude's a freak. Joe Warren is our last gold medal. Holy cow. At the senior level. Yeah. 2006. was the last time we have it a gold medal in Greco at the World of Warcraft Championships.
00:12:39
Speaker
Is that brother of Greg Warren? I don't know if they're related or not. he would have He would have brought that up. Greg, probably. Probably. You're probably right. Or he's saving it. Who knows?
00:12:52
Speaker
i think ah the rules really don't benefit us at all. and and I also think... Well, that is that is a ah huge problem. is like The rules set basically is like whoever is best at holding center and controlling pace until they can get on top and then just gut you to death.
00:13:12
Speaker
Yeah. yeah And dude, I mean, parterre is just a thing that we don't care about in the States. Like, it's true across the board. We just don't... We don't take advantage of it. We don't have the... Like, dude, I watched Kalkins squeeze the life out of all of his opponents whenever he was on top. It's like, yeah, that's what we need to be able to do.
00:13:36
Speaker
And you just see you see some of these European freaks that just pick people up and and launch them. And there's technique behind it, too. But... Yeah. Okay.
00:13:49
Speaker
Women's freestyle. Let's move on to that. We had pretty successful outing, I would say, overall. They take sex place second or first?
00:14:01
Speaker
Second as a team. We placed behind India, but ahead of Japan.
00:14:07
Speaker
India is probably a country to keep an eye on. No, India has the weird birth certificate stuff. Like you don't know how old. Ryan is a number one India hater. He is number one. just just that Just at the age level.
00:14:22
Speaker
Just ah because think about it. They do so well ah at cadets and juniors and then they don't do so high at seniors. Why is that?
00:14:32
Speaker
They do pretty good. and Not as not as well as they do at the age level. yeah i mean At the age level, I think there's one year where they won it. The ladies? Men's freestyle.
00:14:43
Speaker
Well, they won India, won this year, the ladies. Not just ladies, but ah so the guys too. and um i mean I'm just thinking in terms of... let's Let's look at it from a numbers perspective.
00:14:57
Speaker
India is a is a populous country. So if wrestling gets very popular, they're going to have more bullets in the chamber, basically.
00:15:09
Speaker
Um, so you just might see lot.

Exclusive Wrestling Events and Accessibility Issues

00:15:12
Speaker
That just doesn't even, add that just doesn't, I don't know. I don't think that really like correlates.
00:15:20
Speaker
Well, it definitely, maybe I'm wrong, but I think it's something I think they're a country worth keeping an eye on. What about China?
00:15:30
Speaker
More people and way more funding, you know, way more organization. Yeah, but we just send the state of Oklahoma after them and they win. so That's what I'm saying.
00:15:42
Speaker
You want to do a quick sidebar? We just send some Cowboys after them. You want to do a quick sidebar? Sure. What was up with that event? What do you mean? know It's pretty much been talked about. Everyone knows like it was a private donor event.
00:15:57
Speaker
Right. They wanted to make these donors feel special. the The Cowboy Wrestling Club. The Cowboy. The Oklahoma State RTC. Yeah. I don't. Who.
00:16:08
Speaker
And. You know. Why was it like. They had an event. They had a duel. Against China. Not their number ones necessarily. Just some. Higher level guys. From China. and They had a lot of guys. I had a lot of good guys in that duel. That got stomped.
00:16:27
Speaker
Yeah. By guys that weren't even on our ladder. who are Who was the one that beat Zoo? Ronnie Ramirez. Ronnie Ramirez. yeah ah Let me let me me just lay out the full context.
00:16:40
Speaker
He looked good, too. ah Oklahoma State Cowboys wrestled a group of Chinese wrestlers in a high school in Texas, and it was only available to to watch in pub in person for a select number of high-ticket donors.
00:17:00
Speaker
But... Like, how many? Because did you guys see some of the clips from it? Maybe they were all behind the camera on the other side of the gym.
00:17:11
Speaker
It looked pretty... Byron. Yeah. And so, I mean, maybe it was just really small. you know yeah i yeah i was reading that it was like a... You know, they were trying to make it an exclusive event. That's why they didn't stream it.
00:17:26
Speaker
Maybe it was like Chad Richardson and somebody else. I don't know. I don't know what it looked like. But... it was kind of weird the way it was handled by some of the voices for Oklahoma state on social media. Cause they're like, we're so excited about this event. This is happening. Get it at it. It's like, okay, awesome. Where can we watch It's like, no, you can't <unk> you just like, I don't know. Maybe I, I guess I don't know what the right answer is because if you try and go out and if you don't say anything about it, then it's like, what was the point of it even happening?
00:17:56
Speaker
It's still for the high ticket value donors. Uh, But I don't know. you There's no real precedent for this as far as I'm aware for how to handle them. don't get it, Sammy.
00:18:07
Speaker
but what is that important You just don't get it. am I too broke? so that Is it my mindset? Is that the problem? can I can't tell you because I don't really get it either. but Okay. wow Yeah. i mean, you know we'll just say maybe they do it a little differently in the future. Maybe they don't do it in the future. I don't know.
00:18:28
Speaker
But it was a cool event in terms of the matchups and getting to see where some of the some of the Oklahoma State guys are. Guys like ah Connor Dukit and Alex Facundo are ones that I paid.
00:18:42
Speaker
What? Dukit. Dukit. Can you Dukit? What, you think Doucette? Is it Doucette

Future Stars in U17 Women’s Wrestling

00:18:49
Speaker
or is it Dukit? I like Dukit. It's Doucette. I like Dukit. It's Connor Dukit.
00:18:54
Speaker
Can you Dukit? Can he duke it? Can you duke it? i just I think it would be like... like um yeah if you if you had a whole like If you had GIA chanting, can you duke it?
00:19:07
Speaker
It's too close to duke it for me. That's what I'm going with. You say duke it, and I'm going dukey. Dukey, dukey, dukey. but if he When they say duke he pulls his straps down and just...
00:19:25
Speaker
I knew where you were going with that, too. Just stop.
00:19:30
Speaker
What about Swiderski wrestling 74 kilograms and then later tweeted out 149? he He likes to eat when he's in the offseason.
00:19:41
Speaker
He gets big. He looked big. I remember seeing him when he was at Iowa State. I remember his... like The year he went 41, and then that summer, i so we saw him in the room, and Moffat and I didn't even recognize him. were like, who is that guy?
00:20:01
Speaker
And then Dresser comes over and he goes, yeah, Swiderski, he got pretty big, didn't he? And we were like, what the? What's he weigh? He was up to like 165, 170 or something like that. We were like, what?
00:20:12
Speaker
My God. i mean, we they're they're they're guys that just, they get big in the offseason. Vincenzo Joseph, if I saw a picture of him in the offseason one time. Yeah, he's one. Dude, he must have been like 205, 210. Yeah, I was going to say 195, 200 probably.
00:20:27
Speaker
He was big. Okay. We used 17s, women's freestyle. We took second behind India, ahead of Japan. Two champs, I believe.
00:20:39
Speaker
Two champs. Morgan Turner, Taina Fernandez. I think to two significant players, in even like shortly going to be at the at the senior level.
00:20:52
Speaker
ah Both of them look great. Honestly, just from a perspective of like where women's wrestling is in the US, I think Morgan Turner's in an area that's less crowded.
00:21:08
Speaker
at the lighter weights, I think Fernandez is going to end up in that area where you're dealing with Kennedy blades and meat, a lore and, uh, Kylie Welker and Yelena McCoy. And I think, I think if you end up in that area, you're just around a bunch of hammers and when you got that many hammer hammers, somebody has got to be a nail.
00:21:26
Speaker
So, Oh, Now, does that end up being Fernandez or does she she topple somebody over? I don't know. she she so at Fargo, she went and won in juniors and then goes out and wins a U17 gold.
00:21:43
Speaker
And then Morgan

Optimal Match Duration for U17 Wrestling

00:21:44
Speaker
Turner, ah over the last three years, she has won ah a title, a U17 title, took third last year, and then won it again this year. so she How old is this woman?
00:21:55
Speaker
Well, she would, I'm guessing 17 now turned 17 this year. um I mean, yeah, I think these are two names to to keep an eye on in moving into the future, but we also had other talent, obviously with on on the team.
00:22:11
Speaker
um One silver medalist, Epinesa Ellison. She lost in the finals to oh dude. And i I think I remember watching this match. Yeah. Didn't she get screwed? this Kind of. So you can't step on the foot.
00:22:27
Speaker
she She basically, she had a underhook wrist control or elbow control, something like that. And like, as she went to go step in between her opponent's feet to go hip toss. Was it incidental?
00:22:41
Speaker
Yeah, but she kind of lingered there for a moment and then stepped in. And so I get what the ref is doing, but it didn't feel like, I don't know. It didn't feel like it actually helped her achieve the move.
00:22:52
Speaker
if it was so and If it's incidental, if it just happens like naturally, if she wasn't actually attempting to step on the foot, then can't you're not supposed to call it. At at least that's what I thought.
00:23:04
Speaker
i don't I don't know if you can determine intention in that situation because she could have intentionally stepped on the foot. I don't i really don't know. what i know bajreng bajreng always You know stepped on the foot and they never called him for it.
00:23:17
Speaker
He did it quickly too. He was very very slick about it. But yeah, I mean, she could have won that match. and And like even in the the exchanges that she got in, she would get in on shots and get to the takedown. But the the girl from China would just extend the position.
00:23:34
Speaker
And even to one point where she gave up the takedown and then ended up getting a reversal. And it was de true it like took out like 40 seconds in the second period. That whole exchange did. so she loses seven to four, but she's talented too. And then a handful of bronze medalists, uh, Maisie Elliott, Madison Healy, Jacqueline Bousakis and Ella po polio.
00:23:58
Speaker
Yeah. I think if I'm butchering any names, I'm sorry.
00:24:05
Speaker
Uh, Yeah. And that's our, our women's team before we move on. Actually. Sorry, before I was just going say, before we move on to the men's, can we talk about how, uh, like dumb it is? i mean, I think we talked about this all the time. I think Willie and Bosch touched on as well, but how dumb is it that we have two minute periods?
00:24:25
Speaker
I was okay. I'm glad you brought that up because when I, when I talked about how, um, that girl from China was extending positions, it is frustrating watching four minute matches.
00:24:36
Speaker
And I think it's, I don't think it is representative of an actual matchup.
00:24:44
Speaker
Yeah. know i So when they went to the new rule set, I mean, they just just they just landed on four minutes, right? Before that, it was... What was it? With the three periods, was it a minute and a half or two minutes?
00:24:58
Speaker
think it was two. Right? Pretty sure. i I mean, when I wrestled cadets, not not ah cadet trials for the world team, but like cadets at Fargo, it was three minutes.
00:25:14
Speaker
It's still... yeah It still is? um no No, it's not. so it's not hour i thought they I thought they went back to three minutes. No. I i had to watch and check at Fargo today, or this year.
00:25:27
Speaker
um Unless I'm absolutely insane, but I'm pretty sure. I thought they went back to it. Maybe you're right. i don't I don't think so. But but i mean that is like that is what we're seeing, and it's frustrating. because like Especially for the Americans, one of the things that we...
00:25:43
Speaker
can take advantage of is the ability to wrestle hard for four, six minutes, which is not something that you always see with, you know, wrestlers from Europe or or Asia. So it is frustrating. And like, it doesn't, it just doesn't feel like we're getting a real match out of some of these, some of these matches.
00:26:03
Speaker
So ah agreed.
00:26:07
Speaker
More wrestling.

Casual Chat on Personal Interests

00:26:08
Speaker
It's safe. More wrestling is pro more wrestling.
00:26:14
Speaker
There we are. What was that sound?
00:26:18
Speaker
That was Reese opening up a soda. Reese, you opening up a SOTY? I had the courtesy to at least mute my mic when I was opening my Mr. Pibbop. I did it as a point of emphasis on my statement. yeah you yeah i but you really did. You said more wrestling and then got the sound.
00:26:35
Speaker
That was nice. What are you drinking, Reese?
00:26:40
Speaker
now I don't know what you're talking about. Show us what you're drinking. Men's Freestyle. ha We're going to get freaking we're going get deplatformed now. We're demonetized now.
00:26:54
Speaker
Why? Because Pepsi doesn't want our their products on our podcast for free. Sorry, Pepsi. Just like musicians don't want us to play their songs for free.
00:27:07
Speaker
Same thing, right?

Men’s Freestyle Wrestling Achievements and Software Critique

00:27:08
Speaker
i don't Well, that's different because of different reasons, but Pepsi would be like free advertising. That's nice. We like that. Wouldn't the song be same situation?
00:27:19
Speaker
No, because there's something... That's for Because it's Yeah, because... it's like Well, no, someone could get on YouTube and be like, i just want to listen to the song. I'll just go to the barn session, listen to the song on there. You know what I mean? Right, but they can't drink the Pepsi by watching the barn session.
00:27:36
Speaker
Yeah. It's valid. But if I said go listen to Caramel by Sleep Token, that's free advertising for Sleep Token, which you should if you're listening to this.
00:27:49
Speaker
Go listen to Caramel by Sleep Token. Brendan Furman knows what that is. ah Well, he does have good taste. He has great taste. of The Furminator. Furminator.
00:28:02
Speaker
Big fan of My Chemical Romance. Yes, he is. that's that's a That's strange to me, but... I unintentionally put him on that. Really? Really? yeah Yep.
00:28:14
Speaker
I think. I really feel like... ah you know if if If you were going to ask me personally about my chemical romance, I'd say there's an age limit there. But, you know, to each their own, I guess. He's going to a concert there.
00:28:27
Speaker
He's going to one of their concerts. I don't know if I'm i don't know if i'm doing that anymore. thought you were I thought you did that on the 4th. I thought that's what you were and doing No, it was going to be this month. I don't think I'm doing it anymore, though. No, you're not, because it's the same time as your bachelor party.
00:28:44
Speaker
That might be true. It is true, because i was trying to get Furman and Andy to come surprise you at your bachelor party. But furman has the Furman has the concert, and Andy has a baby on the way.
00:28:59
Speaker
Andrew does have a baby on the way. So it didn't out, but I was totally, well, yeah, I was totally going to have them surprise you. I was going to, I was going to have them knock on the door and I was going be like, all right, Sammy, keep an open mind.
00:29:14
Speaker
I got you a stripper. And then it was good. And then I was going to have you go open the door and it was going to be Furman and Andy. It was going to be awesome. I had this whole thing planned, but it fell through. So.
00:29:27
Speaker
can't believe they bailed on me like that. and they did They both wanted to be there, but... Friendship ruined. Oh my goodness.
00:29:37
Speaker
Okay. let's ah Let's get back to the wrestling. Ben's freestyle. U17 Team USA World Champions of the World.
00:29:50
Speaker
Over Iran. Over Russia. it Well, back to back. Kind of. Over Japan, who took like eighth. Over f freaking Canada.
00:30:03
Speaker
Or wherever else. Can I complain real quick? Sure. I could not find team scores anywhere. Except for Twitter. Thank God i had people on Twitter helping me.
00:30:15
Speaker
But I could not find... i If I went to Flo's website, couldn't find them. The tournament's not on Flo. It is. It is? I don't go. Go to UW's website.
00:30:26
Speaker
Okay. The bracket's there. They have the... Under team rankings, you will see the the team scores. And that is always the way to do it.
00:30:37
Speaker
I'm just saying... It is a little slower update-wise. and and I haven't used Flow Arena since NOM. Well, they they've updated it. Flow Arena. You've updated it yourself, buddy. Dude, they... dude they They won't let me not know about the fact that they've updated it.
00:30:53
Speaker
i can every I see see John Kozak maybe once a day, and he says, guys, we got exciting news. I'm like, John, i just want to I just want to watch Where is that at? Where did you see that? oh ah yeah I get ads. I get ads on Flow for Flow. And I'm like, John, just let me watch the match.
00:31:12
Speaker
They're renting ad space on their own website. Nah, you just slip it in. It's free. It's fine.
00:31:19
Speaker
ah Guys, it's so it's a money loop. If we just charge ourselves more money. We make more money. Exactly. Infinite money glitch.
00:31:29
Speaker
Okay. ah Yeah, I don't know. I don't know what the team score situation is on Flo Arena or they're whatever it is now. I thought they were done. i thought they were done doing tournament software.
00:31:40
Speaker
What happened? We were getting to singularity. We were getting to a unified... Psyche! Okay, so they have maity have the Flow Wrestling tournament bracketing software that they own, but they also have Track Wrestling, which they've acquired.
00:31:56
Speaker
So that's those are both under Flow. Track's still the best. and then And then there's USA bracketing, which is USA Wrestling, which is going to monopolize everything. Every single USA Wrestling event is going to be underneath that.
00:32:07
Speaker
and And then eventually, it's just going to it's just going to pull everything in. Why doesn't USA Wrestling just buy track from Flow?
00:32:16
Speaker
Money, I'm guessing.
00:32:20
Speaker
why do Why do you think Willie and Bash, mainly Willie, he just He is ruthless when it comes to that like how he feels about the USA wrestling bracketing software.
00:32:36
Speaker
Yeah, because it's not very user-friendly. Like all of the complaints. That bad. I think it's a work in progress. The infinite window thing, the new window thing is a problem.
00:32:46
Speaker
Figure that out. make It's just where I, I just infancy right now, you know, it's, it's just going to take some time to work out the kinks.
00:32:58
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, I don't really have a huge, any huge issues with it. Other than the fact that when I'm like going through, i don't know if I'm using, or I'm probably just using it wrong, but like I end up with eight windows of USA wrestling. Oh yeah. mean, yeah. If you look at a bracket, then you just use that same window to look at different brackets. Yeah.
00:33:16
Speaker
don't I'd feel like it's it's opening new windows for me. for others and Oh, maybe. i don't know. There should be a drop-down thing that you can just switch to other brackets on that same window. But I don't know. Maybe yours is not doing that.
00:33:29
Speaker
Yeah. My problem is with MacBook from two decades ago. My problem is, sorry is the, uh, the brackets themselves, especially the flow wrestling ones. It was like impossible to find dudes in the consolation. Dude, you had to look du everywhere with the new layout. Did you see the brackets that they were handing out at Fargo? Did did you see the new brackets?
00:33:50
Speaker
What the hell? Why are they getting the Dead Sea Scrolls for, for brackets? at At Fargo. Looks like my wife's receipts from Target. Yeah, no, Reese. Reese, did you see Miller's ahvin did you see melvin miller's like podium picture. i haven't seen anything.
00:34:10
Speaker
It went to the photographers. The bracket went to the photographers. It does look kind of cool. I don't want to, there's, you you you don't have a house tall enough to to be able to hang that bracket up on the wall.
00:34:22
Speaker
That's how it was when, that when it was the vertical pairing or whatever. It wasn't that long. It went down to the, but it went down to the bottom, to the bottom of the podium. That's it. This thing went from the kids hands all the way down to the photographers.
00:34:34
Speaker
Yeah, it was wild. i will I will send you a photo after this. It is it is ridiculous. And all you have to do... Simmy might be exaggerating a little bit, but it was long. All you gotta do is make the word smaller.
00:34:46
Speaker
Just shrink it a little bit, okay? Not everything has to be in font that Will Coakley can read. Dude. Dad's blind. Dad's blind. oh Blind is a bad.
00:34:59
Speaker
Well, never mind. Okay.

Future Prospects of U17 Freestyle Champions

00:35:02
Speaker
um bracketing software usa wrestling flow arena men's freestyle u17 worlds world champions sammy went backwards world champions uh over iran who just needed to win one match on the last day and they didn't and you know what iran fashion things got things got spicy on twitter after that and that's okay of course they did out
00:35:30
Speaker
but yeah There were some accounts there were accounts some some accounts that said some things about Americans. Yeah, well. yeah They let's it really took it to a political place. that when they they could not win when they When they were just getting just defeated in wrestling arguments, they were like, oh yeah, well, Donald Trump was so funny.
00:35:49
Speaker
Yeah. Okay, let's let's go over over the actual matches and the results. We had... Four, count them, four champs. Keegan Bassett, Ariah Mills, Samuel Sanchez, and Jaden James.
00:36:06
Speaker
These were like the guys that I felt the best about, especially with like Sanchez being returning ah champ, Keegan Bassett obviously having the name, Jaden James doing what he's done over the last year. And then Ariah Mills, just feel good about him with the way he's wrestled and his his brothers kind of shot up over the last...
00:36:26
Speaker
year two years so i felt good about all these guys and and really they kind of they kind of smashed everybody i guess uh jane james had a tight match in the semis but he ends up pinning that guy until he which i heard was a great match it was i watched it i didn't get to see it yeah how good was it maybe it was it was kind of back and forth until it wasn't anymore yeah uh how good is jane james gonna be
00:36:58
Speaker
ah Like, right up there with... With the best. He's going to be not quite P.J. Duke, but... like I'd like to see that match.
00:37:15
Speaker
Well, I think they've wrestled that. you know what the You know what the next match needs to be? think Jaden James is bigger. Well, yeah Reese is thinking of Melvin Miller and P.J. Duke. What?
00:37:27
Speaker
You're thinking of Melvin Miller and PJ Duke. That match has happened. Well, that has happened. Yeah. I was thinking Melvin Miller, j James. I was don't, don't put that on me. Don't be putting that on me. Don't be saying I'm mixing up black guys.
00:37:41
Speaker
No one said that so That's what that that is why he was implying. He went to Melvin Miller. for I went to Melvin Miller because I was thinking of ah the US Open finals match, which is like one that I had mixed up. im like, did ja James wrestle that? No. It was Melvin Miller.
00:37:58
Speaker
I swear to God, Reese. No, I know. i know but They wrestle each other in practice all the time. Yeah, they are KD trained kids. ah the The match that needs to happen now is Melvin Miller and janeden James.
00:38:11
Speaker
Who's number one? this is This was referenced by the goat follower on Twitter. He said this a lot. And i agree with that. sad were you that Joe Kenya left you out in his list of favorite?
00:38:23
Speaker
You saw how sad I was. yeah it It tore me apart. Yeah. killing what made me feel a little bit better with his words I just said me reading this list me as I read this list seeing that I'm not on it and it's the gif of Spider-Man like reaching for the ghost of his girlfriend or whoever and he's screaming no the whole time you know I don't know that's how I feel that was totally you you're so Spider-Man when you're sad you're an asshole
00:39:01
Speaker
Okay. ah Other medalists. Arsenic Kikuno, who took a bronze medal at Greco, silver in freestyle, beating an Iranian in semis.
00:39:12
Speaker
Pivotal for us to win that title. He lost one to one of the finals. Did he? what did He medaled last year, right? didn't make the team last year. Oh, he didn't?
00:39:23
Speaker
I thought didn't. Why have I heard that name? I thought I'd heard his name in the context of Worlds in the year prior. Well, he's got a father who wrestles on the senior level and an older brother.
00:39:36
Speaker
What's his older brother's name? I believe his father's name. Ali Xander. No, I'm thinking of Marthin. He made a world team, I thought.
00:39:49
Speaker
ah Let me see if if you are right. Jamie, will you look this up for us, please? Yep. Jamie!
00:40:00
Speaker
Results?
00:40:03
Speaker
2024. Nope. Pan Ams. Shoot. Nope. Nevermind.
00:40:13
Speaker
Maybe he just been, I just been hearing him, hearing in his name thrown around a lot. um
00:40:22
Speaker
Maybe.
00:40:25
Speaker
Ali Xander wrestled at 2024 senior worlds, not Olympics.
00:40:31
Speaker
At 82 kilos. So that could be why.
00:40:37
Speaker
No. Okay. No, no, no. It's, it must've been a Willie just really talking about him or something. Okay. Okay. All right. Uh, you guys, we've, you guys have known this guy, right?
00:40:50
Speaker
For a while. I mean, I've heard of him. Yes. I want to say he made the finals of you 17 trials last year. Hmm. But that could be wrong too.
00:41:01
Speaker
I'm really not sure. But ah he's a double threat. He meddled in Greco. He meddled in in freestyle. And probably should have a lot of coaches giving him a ring.
00:41:14
Speaker
Where do you think he ends up?
00:41:18
Speaker
Michigan. <unk>t wait Is he a PA kid? California. California. California. Michigan. ah Michigan? I'm thinking Nebraska.
00:41:33
Speaker
Michigan. have no idea. not even if it wants to if he wants to continue to pursue Greco, maybe Illinois. You say Rutgers?
00:41:43
Speaker
No. i I said Nebraska. and Nebraska feels like... I think Nebraska... ah Nebraska feels a certain way. What about Samuel Sanchez?
00:41:55
Speaker
about him? He's got another year. That kid's a talent. He's got. he's going to. Dude, he's going to be a sophomore. I know. That's what mean. He's got another year high school before he can be recruited.
00:42:07
Speaker
Right. But where do you just see him? Where do you see him going? Oklahoma State.
00:42:12
Speaker
They don't need him. He'll be a 25 pounder. They will need him by then. maybe Maybe. I mean, two two, three more years of high school. I'm saying ASU.
00:42:25
Speaker
where's he Where's your restaurant? ASU is going to continue to plummet until they gil roy they can find a ah until they can find a replacement for Sunkist Kids.
00:42:37
Speaker
A viable replacement for Sunkist Kids. That is correct. I don't know what that looks like though. ah Reese, to answer your question.
00:42:49
Speaker
I don't know how to answer your question. he He's from Whittier, California.
00:42:57
Speaker
Don't know.
00:43:01
Speaker
Got nothing for you. Orange County?
00:43:07
Speaker
Maybe? I don't know.
00:43:11
Speaker
I also saw think Keegan Bassett's going to go wherever Bo Bassett goes, which is wherever Melvin Miller's going to go or the other way around, however you want to look at it. I also saw him wrestling with Aaron Nagao. Ooh, you know what?
00:43:23
Speaker
I want to stick with Oklahoma State for Sammy Sanchez, but I might go Penn State. He wrestles at Speranza. Speranza. Speranza Beach. Never heard of that. Might choose Penn don't want that.
00:43:35
Speaker
I don't want that to happen at all. Penn State might be the move.
00:43:44
Speaker
They already have one guy out of this list. No, they already have Jaden James. Why going to give him Sammy Sanchez? I'm not giving them anybody. Yes, you are. um youre listening put the energy out there I'm listening to my heart. That's all I'm telling you.
00:43:59
Speaker
you was to love it He'll just slide right in right after Little Doll graduates.
00:44:07
Speaker
And we had two other medalists, Gray Burnett and Tanner Hodgins took bronze. Solid performance from the team, from the squad.
00:44:20
Speaker
Gray Burnett, he's going to follow in his dad's footsteps and come to Iowa Central. Bing. When did his dad wrestle? His dad was teammates with coach Luke Moffat.
00:44:33
Speaker
What year?

Sammy Sasso’s Legal Issues and Impact

00:44:41
Speaker
ah year was it? I think it was 99, dude. Okay. All right. Good. Good job. Let's, I want to talk about Croatia. Okay.
00:44:53
Speaker
Can talk about ch Croatia? Because we had some wrestlers wrestling in Croatia.
00:44:59
Speaker
And I want to talk about them. Rhys, is that okay? Is that okay for you?
00:45:04
Speaker
He just wants to talk about Simon Ruiz. I was going to talk about Vito Ruiz as well. Yeah, but not in sir not as much as you were going to talk about Ruiz.
00:45:17
Speaker
Dude, i can't i can't I can't help but gush about Simon Ruiz. okay Because he looks good. Yeah. Yeah. You mean glaze? That's what the kids would say. That is worse. That's worse. Kids would say you're glazing.
00:45:34
Speaker
That's worse. um we took We took, I think, six guys or eight. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven. We took seven right between. And they all came home with hardware.
00:45:48
Speaker
Vito Ruzio took silver. Made it to the finals, wrestled some dude from Ukraine who I've never heard of and lost to him That dude's been at 57 all year, I read.
00:46:00
Speaker
Roman Bravo Young beat him. that's right. A little... How does this make us feel about the losses to Jax Forrest? what you mean? The dude's not healthy. I still don't think he's all the way... I think i think he's not healthy in the head, too.
00:46:17
Speaker
Okay, okay. Tell me how he did again. He lost 5-4 to a Ukrainian, but he it was also a 96 win over Andri Jalep and a 2-0 win over Devin Turner. that's That's concerning.
00:46:29
Speaker
Yeah. So, with that mind, and look, for you Jacks Forest Glazers out there... And the Gushers. still think... ah And the Gushers.
00:46:44
Speaker
I still think Jax Forrest is a metal threat, but I'm probably putting a little bit of... I'm putting my my foot down on the brakes a little bit. Right?
00:46:56
Speaker
Why? little bit of brake action? Because the the initially... Yes. The veto win is like, damn, he's pretty good.
00:47:07
Speaker
He's pretty clutch. He's got it he's got he's got it all. And now it's like, hmm, can he really beat Haratunyan? Can he really beat Takara Suda? Can he really beat Abakarov?
00:47:19
Speaker
Can he beat, ah not Rashidov, Aguyev? Aguyev? He can beat those guys. Dude, he almost must beat Thomas Gilman at the Olympic Trials. That's true.
00:47:30
Speaker
That's true. Dude, it's his length. It's freaky. Yeah. he he's But he's going to have... I mean, it's going to really hard for him to put the tournament together. I think Vito has a better shot.
00:47:41
Speaker
If, like, Vito was Vito... Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, you know for sure. Vito needs to find his mojo. So, i had a...
00:47:53
Speaker
A brief altercation on Twitter about this with with B.E.G. Wrestling's Cornell Kevin. Because he was like. I can't remember. He was saying something about Vito and I was like, i look, Vito's got a high ceiling. We know this, but he's also got a little bit of a low floor and he did not like that.
00:48:10
Speaker
That phrase. He said, how does he have a low floor? he's He's done all of these things. And I'm like, yes, there was a year, there was a calendar year where he he won an NCAA title beating Roman Bravo Young and Dayton Fix, and he won a world title beating all of these guys, but he also lost to Sam Latona.
00:48:27
Speaker
So there's some variability in his wrestling. And so I think you can take that and and say... Maybe we're just seeing an extra amount of variability with the fact that he hasn't competed very often and with the fact that he's coming off of an injury.
00:48:39
Speaker
And so the more he competes, things probably start to hone in a little bit. That's the way I see it.
00:48:50
Speaker
but also maybe I agree. I mean, I agree with that. Anyone, anyone who's not like super biased or can at least take their, like put their bias to the side. We can see that clearly, you know?
00:49:03
Speaker
Yeah. Yes. But there's also the possibility that like Vito's injured and it's going to be a problem forever. And he's probably, he might just never, might just never ever be the same. Like we saw, we saw this with so many guys in wrestling, Hunter Stieber,
00:49:17
Speaker
He didn't have elbows. He was just never the same afterwards. You know? So, hopefully that's not the case for Vito, but it's a reality. the same Dustin Schlatter.
00:49:30
Speaker
Dustin Schlatter, a little bit before my time.
00:49:34
Speaker
um Devin Turner, who we just mentioned, took bronze. Brayton Lee, 70 kilos, ah recently announced assistant coach for Bellarmine. Won 70 kilos.
00:49:47
Speaker
Beat a Korean and two Ukrainians. Looked pretty pretty decent doing it. ah But now he's dipping into the coaching world. so Speaking of that, do you want to give our opinions on the Sammy Sasso sitch?
00:50:04
Speaker
o I mean, yeah, we can. For me, it's pretty mean it's me take t straightforward.
00:50:16
Speaker
Yeah, I don't What are you gonna do? What can you do? What are you going to Because I have a feeling it is a there's there's two possibilities, right?
00:50:27
Speaker
Either passing Toro has a level standard that is just like, hey, I can't I can't do this for you. Sorry, you don't you're not a fit. I mean, who are would wear anywhere? I mean, anywhere. Who would it?
00:50:39
Speaker
like in that kind of situation, new brand new hire, like who would keep him on in any situation? No, I know. I mean, even if he got the charges dropped, it's like, you you still like,
00:50:52
Speaker
still this is ugly the the it's and it's probably and part of it is the weed right like yeah that's a yeah and you know and maybe it's not that big of a deal if you if if you don't have it in your car and it's just something that you do in your free time at home to help you relax or whatever but it's you know that it's the same as drinking and driving right and right And that's the thing is like, would he be getting like, would people be so quick to defend Sammy if they found empty beer cans in his car instead of empty weed cartridges? You know what I mean?
00:51:27
Speaker
Right. And it's like, that's, that's where I think there's a little bit of a double standard from some of these, some of these guys that are so outspoken about it. It's like, you would would you really be defending him as hard if it was alcohol instead of marijuana?
00:51:41
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, ah so are you saying just the fact that there were empty beer cans or does that imply that he was on them like on he was high at the time of driving? Well, it's here's the thing. That's we don't have really the technology to determine that because it stays in your system for so long.
00:51:58
Speaker
Like they can find that they can, they can find those in there and then do a blood test, you know, take them in, do a blood test. But that, I mean, it could have, he'll test positive if you did it two weeks prior to that. You know what I mean? Or three weeks.
00:52:10
Speaker
Blood tests go back so far. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So that's what that's what I, that's what I mean, but that's where they kind of, I think, you know, where they kind of have to, but that's what, I guess that's what I'm trying to say is like, just don't have that stuff in your car.
00:52:26
Speaker
You know what I mean? Yeah, I mean, you know, what what does Sammy Sasso's life look like if this if he doesn't get pulled over in this situation and six months down the line, being in this coaching position, things are a little bit cleaner?
00:52:39
Speaker
Maybe, but
00:52:43
Speaker
you just, you can't make those mistakes. You got to have your car registered, you know? Yeah. your car's registration up to date. Whenever you're moving states, you got to have your gun stuff handled. and i'm I'm glad he yeah everything got dropped for him because that means he is going to have.
00:53:01
Speaker
But he'll get picked up somewhere. Someone's going to hire him, you know, and and might take a little time. it might take some time and you know what maybe lehigh's in the process of of figuring out whether if they want to bring him back or not hopefully that is right because i did think that was going to be a good fit especially with how good this team is going to be i was excited about that hire ah yeah but you know it's hard for me to like feel bad for the guy or defend him
00:53:33
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Beyond better behavior. You can't, here's the deal. You can't have, you can't have any kind of substance, alcohol, or drugs, anything like that. If you conceal and carry, you can't, it's illegal.
00:53:45
Speaker
Right. And, and it's, you gotta, when you're in a mentor leadership position like that, you have to be a pretty clean whistle.
00:53:58
Speaker
Yeah. yeah um that's that's why i was yeah i was trying to say like if you're doing it in your in the privacy of your own home you know in a place where it's story where it's illegal and you gotta you know you're or even if it's just medically and you gotta you got a medical card for it and you're doing it because it's it's helping you with whatever kind of physical issues you got like and yeah and you know it's fine but
00:54:26
Speaker
and well Yeah, it's it's um it's how it looks like. Why do you have empty weed cartridges just sitting in your car? Are you smoking in your car, dude? Like.
00:54:37
Speaker
Yeah, I think having I think in summary, having Sammy Sasso in the sport is good for the sport. Yes. in In a position where he can give back to it. So hopefully we get that in the future.
00:54:50
Speaker
I am hoping, I am hopeful that Lehigh maybe is like, yeah, all right, charges are dropped. I don't think the public's going to come at us if we keep this guy.
00:55:05
Speaker
Let's put you on this plan. Maybe i mean maybe they're like, we're going to to test you every month. We're going to have do these things to make sure you're on the straight and narrow. i don't even know if that's necessary, the drug testing, but. I mean, i don't know. what like Whatever they want to do to make sure that they're getting the type of Sammy Sasso that they want or whatever. I don't know, dude.
