Speaker: Reese will be joining us later. now. And we're going about some wrestling. We actually, we have a lot to talk about because we have not been keeping up with recordings. And so we got to play a little bit of catch up here.
Speaker: Yeah, we we into god we had, we had plans to do an episode, last weekend, but things happen. Life is complicated.
Speaker: Life is complicated. It just didn't, It didn't work out. you know i knew It was going to be a good one. It was going to be all of us in the same location. and Everybody loves that. Everybody loves when we're all in the same spot.
Speaker: I think so. It would have been a It's happened once. It's right. It'll happen again. Do you think we can do one? We'll be all in the same location here in a couple weeks. i think we can do one then. Yes. Probably. Probably should.
Speaker: We should try. But yeah, we we missed, ah I mean, honestly, we missed previewing and recapping U20 Worlds. So we'll we'll do it we'll do a recap of it when Reese gets back.
Speaker: But for now, we can talk about some real American freestyle. There's 10 matches. They go down this weekend in Cleveland or on the Fox Nation streaming service, whatever it is.
Speaker: ah if you are not going to be in Cleveland like like I am and like Ryan is and like Reese is. So we will be watching it from the from the air.
Speaker: And some of these matches are interesting. Some of them are interesting for other reasons. That's how I see it. Yeah, was going say they're all like, and they all have like interest, I think.
Speaker: Nah, disagree. You don't think so? Mm-mm. Like, I don't, this is not me saying I'm not interested in women's wrestling, but I think Sarah Hildebrandt and Kennedy Blades are going to torch their opponents.
Speaker: I thought Hildebrandt had a pretty decent opponent. Well, i know Kennedy Blades, her girl, her opponent is like a two-time Pan Am medalist, and that's it.
Speaker: And Sarah Hildebrandt's opponent, I don't think has ever medaled at Worlds. Uh, I thought she was decent though, but I could be wrong.
Speaker: I might've, might've miscalculated my research, but let's get, let's get into it. Let's talk about it. Let's start from the the match order. So let's start from the top and that's going Nathan Thomas, Selvers, Matt Ramos. And this is a relatively interesting match.
Speaker: Yeah. Uh, Matt Ramos just took, uh, shoot fifth or fourth.
Speaker: uh, fourth, right? He got pinned. Yeah. For third, he got pinned for third. couldn't remember if he lost a little on the conces or for third little doll, the ventresca and then Ramos beat somebody else trying to think who was on the other. Sheldon Seymour. Oh, Seymour.
Speaker: I should have known that. don't know why I forgot. So, um, but yeah, so, and Nathan Tomasello, he's been on the senior level for a while. He's, Made the finals of world team trials at 61 kilos, which is close to what this weight is. And yeah, I think Nathan Thomas is probably closer towards the end of his career and Matt Ramos, if he's going to be sticking around rest and freestyle for a while, this will be a pretty good test for him.
Speaker: They both have dubs over Spencer Lee. This is also true. And folk style. Yes.
Speaker: Yeah, I think I think I'd lean Matt Ramos for this one. Really? Yeah.
Speaker: Why? Because you think just because NATO's at the tail end of his career, you think Ramos is kind of entering his prime? Yeah, I mean, I don't know. what I don't know what Ramos, what his career is is going to look like, but Yeah, Nathan Tomasello to me is a guy that's kind of been little a little wishy-washy in terms of does he actually want to compete at the senior level? Because I feel like we've heard that he was done wrestling in the past, or and he's he's moved around the country a fair amount.
Speaker: so I think a lot of that was due to injuries, and you know and then when his body got back to feeling good. I mean, this happens all the time with guys, is they start to feel good again, and And then they're like, you know what? I'm not done. I got more to give. and Yeah. who Who beat him at the open?
Speaker: This year? i don't know. He, I think it might've been, was it Jack's? I think about it might've been now.
Speaker: Maybe it was, maybe he was blaze. I got it.

Speaker: but he's probably the guy who's going to win. so I've got my money on Tommy. Tommy Sello. Okay. Match number two. Probably the second most, yeah probably the most interesting match of the night ah is going to be Yanni Diakmahalas versus Bottering Puna.
Speaker: This will be the third time that we've these two. Yeah. This will be the the second third third time we've seen these two wrestle. wrestled to beat the streets in 2019, and then they wrestled at Worlds in 2022. Yanni won both matches. The first one was back and forth and contentious, and the second one, Yanni won ten zero tech ball.
Speaker: So, probably going to see more of that. um Bajrink's been off the mat for a while. I believe there was some sort of doping violation going on for him. was like, why hasn't he wrestled?
Speaker: I mean, i think I think he also was... thought he's soft or tired, to be honest. Yeah, but he's like protesting against the Federation, the Wrestling Federation in India, maybe, or something like that. i feel like I heard that, but that could be total totally fabricated. i have no idea.
Speaker: But, uh, and I think honestly, might've been a situation where he was like told to get, take a drug test. And he was like, no, I'm protesting you guys. and And then he was suspended. I don't know. I have no idea. I, what I knew, what I do know is that we haven't seen him wrestle for a while. Uh, but he's an Olympic bronze medalist. He's, he's good.
Speaker: So there should be an interesting match. It's at 155 pounds. So both of them are, are going to be pretty healthy. Not too much weight to cut, but I mean, I take Yanni maybe by tech.

Speaker: And it was an 8-2 loss, I think. Something like that. Something like that. Since he graduated college. So he won a national title in 2009. ah two thousand and nine um beating Brett Metcalf in the finals.
Speaker: ah huh ah Redshirted or injury or ah medical redshirted the next year and then came back 11 was the one seed, but like, i don't think he was ever fully healthy because he ended up injury defaulting out of the tournament and got me by Gerholas on the front side and injury defaulted.

Speaker: i think Because. the the intrigue in the actual match should be pretty low. There's not really much of a way for Darian Caldwell to have a shot in this match, at least on paper.
Speaker: One of the things that was talked about and was promoted for Real American Freestyle was following the storylines of these guys. I don't know about you.
Speaker: i haven't seen a lot about that. Or am I just not looking?
Speaker: Yeah. I mean, i haven't seen any of it. I guess maybe maybe we'll see what what comes to us at the event, if it's going to be like a... There's been some back and forth between Gomez and Palmer online I've seen. that's Yeah, that's really it.
Speaker: And then I think think Woods and Darian had some Instagram comments between each other. Yeah. I mean, Kyle Dake and Dean Hammond aren't going to be trash-talking each other. That's that's not what we're but we need to lean on and for this, so...

Speaker: Okay. And that's six pounds below 190, right? But that was how long ago? I was told this for 2016. twenty sixteen And then he was underweight for the U.S. Open this year. I know. Okay. My point is his whole goal has been to keep putting weight on. I think he's probably touched 190 then. I mean, I would think has. It's not hard. I've done it. I initially, because what I was hearing was from people who I was like, how do they really know what Kyle Dake was weighing at 2016 trials?

Speaker: I don't care what weight. And maybe he gets a little bit heavier, but he he I don't think Dean Hammity is getting too close to wide. I can't imagine Dean really being that much bigger than 180. I don't know.

Speaker: Two bronze medalists, a fifth place. An 11th. And a DNP. 11th. eleventh Yeah, yeah, yeah. 11th place, Anthony Knox. Won a match, lost a match. and he didn't have He doesn't have the freestyle feel yet.
Speaker: His weight was kind of tough, too. The dude he lost was good, and then the dude that got the dude that beat him in the semis was also good. Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah, and I just don't think... I just don't think Knox quite has that freestyle acumen that you need for bracket in a tournament like this. You think so i don't think? No, I think Knox is more of a folk style guy.
Speaker: Yeah, he lost to Itanov from Kazakhstan who
Speaker: teched his guy for bronze. And I believe it's the Russian beat that beat the Kazakh in the semis also took first. So nice.
Speaker: Was he the one? Was he the one that hit the arm lace? The head and arm lace? Maybe. I don't know. Chechen railways. cheese was and That was dirty.
Speaker: It was disgusting. Was discussed is that at U20s? I think it was. or not you It was at U20s. It was at U20s. But I can't. It might not have been 57 kilos. I don't know. I feel like it was 65. You could be right.

Speaker: I don't know if you saw it, but basically just slapped the shit out of his neck at the very end with like eight seconds left. this is This is something that I noticed overall.
Speaker: Team USA, i don't know if it's just the guys in particular on the team or if there was something that Jaden Cox talked to them about. some of the Some of the most collected group of 20-year-olds I've ever seen.
Speaker: They didn't get hyped. They didn't get too upset. They didn't get too upset. They didn't get too emotional. I mean, I think the biggest celebration was Luke Stanich winning his first match, from what I could tell.
Speaker: Which was an exciting match, but like, we had five champs and all of them were kind of just like, yeah. And that was it. Mad Max was hyped. Yeah, when he won in the semis and and, but he even still, like, it was, it still felt like it was kind of just a simmer and not like a boil. Nothing was boiling over, you know?
Speaker: Yeah. I don't know. They'll see in the way some of the other countries, like their, their representatives, the way they reacted and when they lost, I get it.
Speaker: It's, you put everything into it and then you lose and that sucks, but it was also. Dude, that's how the, that's how it has always been at every, at every level. It just, if I guess it felt excessive this, at this event. i think so.

Speaker: or more than i um then I'm used to seeing. Here's what I think. I could be wrong. When you know, when you're going into a tournament and you know that you're the best team there, that ever every guy on the team is a dog, and you know, youre youre yeah you read i'm I'm a dog and I'm wrestling with other dogs, it's like, it's easy to kind of keep keep those emotions a little bit leveled, you know?
Speaker: Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's fair. And I think that that was part of it. Right, because Marcus Blaze had been there before. PJ Duke has been there before.
Speaker: and Luke Stanich, this was his first time, but he, I mean, he clearly, he had a lot to prove and he wanted to prove it. ah But also, like, Will Henkel came up, came really out of nowhere and navigated ah an insanely tough bracket.
Speaker: And also... I'm going to stop you there. I've been a critic of Will. yeah Or mainly of his commitment to Penn State and their already limited room and around those weights.

Speaker: No one really was giving this dude a shot. No. But like if you actually went and watched his matches... At the open at you at you 20s or even honestly in the past, like you so could see this kid's like, oh, this kid's got it. He's coming.
Speaker: He's coming. And then he finally he was able to do you know put it all together. I mean, I think the one time I was I was kind of like, ah maybe I'm, you know, maybe i I'm a little bit too high on this kid. It was when he got beaten the Fargo finals by skulls.

Two years ago, he wrestled Jesse Mendez, I think in the semis at U20 Worlds or quarters, something like that. And it was a tough match.
Speaker: ah So I knew that this guy was going to be a serious challenge for Stanich. And he almost took Stanich's entire tournament and just ended it in one match basically was was probably just a little bit more effort on a gut wrench away from it being a tech for him but that didn't happen they get to a restart and Luke Stanich just starts chipping away takedown take down take down take down until he gets it Toprak almost blew his whole wad in that first series in that first eight points because he started and he started fading fast after that
Speaker: Right. if you're goingnna If you're going to blow your wad, you better make sure the match ends.

Speaker: Also total side note at the last ranking series, David Carr was wrestling and Brent Metcalf was in his corner. I think Brent was getting yelled at for wearing a hat.
Speaker: Because I'm pretty sure like it was to the point where they were like, take the hat off. And so the ref on the mat told him to. And so he took it off. And then once the ref turned around, he put right back on. And the reason Brent is wearing a hat is because he has frosted tips right now. Now, I don't know what bet he lost for that to happen. Speaker: I'm pretty sure this... I've been only witnessing this through through tournaments and Final X and all that. This is the narrative that I've put together. So I haven't confirmed it in any way. but But yeah, back to Luke Stanich.
Speaker: Wins that first match 18-8. ah Beats his next opponent 9-3. He's in a tough match in the quarters against Alessandro Nini from Italy who wrestles for Rutgers. But wins that match 3-3.
Speaker: Now he's in the semifinals against... I believe is easy. UWW wrestler, but I think he's the Bella Russian. think he's from Belarus. I don't think this is the Russian that he wrestled in the semis.
Speaker: ah But this one had beaten Top Racket Euros. And so this is another name where it's like, crap. Like, he's really got to have it put together to win this match. He gets the job done with a 3-1 win. And then he he beats Reiji Uchida of Japan in the finals, 4-3. I think Top Rack teched his way through in the back door, too. I didn't tech that Russian.

No. ah because i was there were two matches there were two bronze medal matches that i had to watch it was that one and then it was also uh the armenian that got disqualified against blaze i had to watch him wrestle he also blew it late in his match and threw a fit but um uchida in the finals tried to do that head up head up the butt leg lace and stanch had the solution for it so that was awesome to see

Speaker: It looked pretty decent, but we something that was noticeable was he was wrestling a guy from India earlier in the tournament, and he faded hard late in the match. So PJ Duke, ah he gets up. He's he's winning this match 2-2 on Criteria with about a minute and a half think faded? Really?
Speaker: ah The Iranian. Oh, thought you were saying PJ did. I was like thinking. I just watched his match today. i did not think that. Okay. No, I'm talking about the Iranian earlier in the in the in the tournament.
Speaker: He wrestled. I can confirm who it was. He wrestled. Yeah, Sagar from India. And the match started to get out of hand late in the match. I think it was 7-6 maybe or something like that.
Speaker: But semifinals, two to two PJ Duke is winning on criteria about a minute and a half left in the in the match. Neither guy is, is pushing the subject at all in any way. 30 seconds left.
Speaker: No pressure from either guy holding center, collar tie, collar tie, wrist control. That's it. Nothing is happening.
Speaker: Commentary for the match. It starts kind of saying, uh, what's his name? Uh, Alahi, Alahi's got to go. He's got to, he doesn't, does he know he's he's losing this match? You see the Iranian coaches, they start freaking out. They start yelling. I don't know what they're yelling because i don't understand their language, but everybody's starting to freak out because for some reason, this Iranian is not trying to win the match for for either he thinks he's winning or he's super tired and he doesn't want to try.
Speaker: who There's been a lot of reasons that people have discussed, but either way, time runs out and the Iranian is just like, yeah, I won. And then he looks at the score And then he's like, what?
Speaker: And it's a two to two match. well yeah How do you, where does the math get lost? You know, cause it was a, it was a one point, one point for the Iranian and a two point takedown for Duke.
Speaker: It's a pretty simple math. Yeah, but he must've, I don't know. Cause didn't he score last? Was the Iranian? So I'm thinking he forgot about the point value.
Speaker: And just thought he winning the last point scored. But to not, to not hear your coaches, to not look at the scoreboard. It'd be hard to hear your coach with a fricking ears like this. Cause you're in a ear to ear collar tie. And guess, mean, there were, there were restarts. I don't know. you du seen each other There's, I have a hard time giving people the benefit of the doubt.
Speaker: So that happened. And some people were like, man, P.J. Duke beat Yanni Diakamahalos 19-13 or whatever. Pinned Yanni Diakamahalos. 2-2 win over an Iranian?
Speaker: I expected more. And then he had a tough match in the finals. He won... What was the score? He won 7-5 over a Moldovan. P.J. Duke will win matches.
Speaker: But it's not always going to be this... this show it's not always going to be you know dominant or high scoring sometimes it's just or below a hand fight a hard hand fight pj duke will kind of well he'll wrestle down to your level like hey if you just want to if you just want to wrestle a low scoring criteria match i'll do that and i will i will put my head hands defense at the forefront and draw this match out so
Speaker: I don't know. It was people I don't think fully understand what what to expect from PJ Duke. And that's partially because of the flair that he provided to his appearance with with winning final X and how he did it.
Speaker: So yeah, that's what I have to say about it. PJ Duke was really a three seed at the US Open. Didn't know that.
Speaker: I was just looking at the US Open to see who he kind of went through. i mean, I knew about the Melvin Miller mat. It was Melvin Miller and Landon Robito. Oh, at U20s. Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah, I mean, that they probably used the PIN system, and PIN system's not very not too close to perfect. How do you look at that before you put out the brackets, and you're like, hmm.

Speaker: He also pulls hair, which I find but dirty and cheap. And not very honorable. But the refs didn't see it, so doesn't matter. He is not a man of honor.
Speaker: Yeah, and then he... Ladurian's in Rappershage because Kanaev makes the finals. Beats his opponent from Turkmenistan, Tenno. Has a very tough German, Manuel Wagen.
Speaker: And beats him 8-5. Late exchange. very Very thrilling finish to the match. And he's he's in the bronze medal match now against Kanata Yamaguchi.
Speaker: Gets taken down off a very interesting exchange. And then Yamaguchi puts his head up his butt. And just... Rolls them to a fifth place finish. And that was that. Yep. Yep. Yep. Bruce.
Speaker: So not, you know, not if you, if you, if you are a member of the Ladarian hype train, Ladarian locket hype train, I'm not saying get off, but I think you evaluate this as a, a bit of a, Hey, we got some things we got to fix.
Speaker: We got to get our our mind ready and right for this upcoming folk style season. Cause I expect him to be the guy that they put in right away at one 65. And you know, if there's a guy who's going to get, get the right stuff in place, it's going David Taylor ah or Cal Sanderson.

Speaker: Yeah, Max McAnally. And it's crazy to think he had to... he had a Wrestle very and beat a very tough Aiden Sinclair to make this to make this team. Lost the match.
Speaker: Dropped a match to him. Did he? the Three matches. Oh yeah, it took three matches at trials. So they wrestled they wrestled four times. That's crazy. Yeah, dude.
Speaker: This... Max McAnally, this was a little bit of an eye opener. This, this kind of squarely puts him in my mind as the guy at 184 pounds next year. I think, I think he has put himself at least, at least a step ahead of Angelo Ferrari. And, and I think Ferrari is probably a step ahead of Welsh and Ryder or whoever Oklahoma state has at 184 pounds. And then the rest of the field from there, I think it's going to be interesting to see one 84.
Speaker: Yeah. I I'm excited to talk about the upcoming NCAA season. and but I will say one 84 at the top is probably going to be the most interesting weight to watch throughout the season.

Speaker: over an R Jafar Lee, who, if you recognize that name, that's the guy that beat mirror soul of four bronze last year. So this was sweet revenge for us for a sweet third place finish. Honestly, mirror Sola probably can consider himself in contention for that gold medal.
Speaker: If he just wrestles that round of 16 match a little bit differently. Overall, good performance from Connor mirror Sola, who, when thinking about this upcoming season might be a guy that we see on the bench, which is crazy.
Speaker: Oh my God. Okay. The chances are higher and than not, right? Yeah, probably. i mean, he's, he's currently behind returning national finalist and sophomore Josh Barr.
Speaker: Justin Rademacher, 97 kilograms, gold medal finish. And he kind of smashed everybody. 17, eight pin, nine, one in the quarters, 16 to five tech fall in the semis over Konstantin Petriashvili, who is a guy to keep an eye on. Obviously he has the pedigree with his older brother being Olympic champion, again, Petriashvili, but I mean, this was a, this, he said it in the interview. This is a man wrestling a boy.
Speaker: yeah So Justin Rademacher was just, just a man. um And he wins 4-1 in the finals over Magomed Gadzi, Magomedov from Russia. And Justin Rademacher is a U20 world champ.
Speaker: Now it's 97 kilos. And if he's going to make that drop down to 197 for the upcoming season, it might take a little bit of a little bit of a lump from that. But overall, Justin Rademacher is going to be a name to look at for 197 this upcoming year.
Speaker: Okay. Last guy here. Cole Mirasola, 125 kilos. Bronze metal finish. So that's the twins. Two bronze metal finishes. Tenotech. Huh? What did you say?

Speaker: 10-0 tech in the quarters, or in the round of 16, 3-0 win in the quarters. He loses in the semis, 11-0 to Kasimbek from Kazakhstan, who Mako, last year at Cadets, teched in the finals.
Speaker: But this Kazakhstan... First of all, was absolutely huge and was very tricky whenever defending shots. So I think Colmira Sola slows down this match just a little bit and is just quicker on his shot to finish execution.
Speaker: Maybe this match is little bit different, but either way gets 12 to tech in December in the bronze medal match. Caps us off with eight medals with his bronze medal finish. So.
Speaker: This was an unreal performance from our U20 world team. This I think was the largest margin of victory that we have seen in the modern US or the modern world championships.
Speaker: This has to be team you has to be the best team we've ever had right? Yeah, I don't think we've... U20s for sure. The most gold medals we'd had before this was three. We got five.
Speaker: Scored 185 points with Kazakhstan coming in at second with 112. Russia would have been somewhere in second place with more than 112 points. Let him back in. Jesus.
