Speaker: Welcome back to the Bar and Session, everybody. It is a two-man crew tonight between me and Reese. But we're here. We're talking about some wrestling. We're late.
Speaker: We didn't get to talk about the CKLV in a timely manner, and that's okay. Reese, how are you? I'm all right. How are you?
Speaker: Been better, been worse. Somewhere in the middle, right? ah All right. Yeah, you want to get do you want to get started on the CKLV? Where do you want to start with this? CKLV?
Speaker: You know, I told you i was going to watch some CKLV before I wanted to talk about it. And I watched watch some, but not a lot. Yeah.
Speaker: I didn't watch any of the lightweights. I mostly watched, like, the upperweights, which is not like me. but Okay. I don't even know. I mean, the matches I was most excited for didn't even happen. So, I don't know. I was kind of bummed about that. Like, you know, Strickenberger winning... Dude, clip Cliff Keen was just so...
Speaker: So down this year. And I'm sure it's because of the duels. It is. i And it's weird because people are like people generally were saying like CKLV is still going to be absolutely like phenomenal. And it was good.
Speaker: it is the It is the best regular season tournament that we have and are going to have this year. um But it was definitely down. like Look 141 pounds. you but you could have had and and Five and six.
Speaker: If Ragasen. If all the teams that typically go had went. Yeah, we would have had um Oklahoma State, Ohio State, Nebraska there, which would have added Jesse Mendez, Sergio Vega, and Brock Hardy.
Speaker: a That's a game changer. Yeah, yeah, and that's and that's just one weight. But like even Virginia Tech went, who they went to national duels, but they didn't send like they're all of their guys. Eddie Ventresca didn't go. so ah Sonny Sasso wrestled, but at the Patriot Open, didn't wrestle CKLV.
Speaker: So I don't know. think George Mason.
Speaker: I think. You're saying he like traveled with the team but wrestled at a different tournament. No, no, but he wrestled on the weekend. So I don't know why he didn't wrestle at CKLV where he would have had great competition with Rademacher and Novak, who he's beaten, and Elam. yeah so I don't know it's And ah honestly, with the news that we got today that the national duels will be moving to December 12th and 13th next year It's probably going to be even worse.
Speaker: I didn't even see that. Yeah, that dropped earlier today. um i mean, here's what I think. I think that the national duels can be an event that happens at the end of the first semester. That is a great kickoff to to end the first semester, to start the dual conference season in the second semester.
Speaker: But a tournament like the Cliff Key in Las Vegas Invitational is going to have to adjust to that. um I don't know how, I don't know if they're going to move themselves to like the weekend before Thanksgiving or if they're just going to stay put and kind of just be a weaker event. I don't know, but yeah, let's ah briskly walk through the CKLV results and ah talk about some, some notable results that we can find here and there.
Speaker: 125 pounds, Jett Strickenberger beats Maximo Renteria in the finals and beat Steve-O Poulin in the semis. Renteria beat Nico Provo. ah an An entertaining weight all around. I was happy with all the wrestling that went down.
Speaker: um
Speaker: Jett Strickenberger.
Speaker: Yeah, how did he look against Poulin? How did he look against Poulin? he He won seven four sudden victory. ah And I think he's given up a takedown in every single match he's wrestled.
Speaker: But he has found a way to win. And i I was impressed with a win against Poulin. I was impressed with Renteria, who, with the way he was things were shaping up for him this weekend, I was like, Renteria is about to announce himself as an All-American contender. And Jess Strickenberger still beats him.
Speaker: So...
Speaker: I, with, we, we know how Strickenberger does against a guy like Troy Spratly. Are we going to see him continue to do that against guys like Dean Peterson?
Speaker: ah
Speaker: Names that I'm b blanking on. Jory Bolk, Eddie Ventresca, Sheldon Seymour. Or is he going to need knock up into that top tier and wrestle guys like Vince Robinson and Luke Lillard all like that? I don't know.
Speaker: I can't, I'm trying to figure out, I'm trying to navigate this bracket here. I'm trying to figure out where Mark Anthony McGowan got knocked back to. he lost to Provo, I see. and then I can't find him on the backside. I don't understand how these brackets.
Speaker: I mean, it, it, it works. It's formatted like a normal bracket, but it is definitely a different, uh, I cannot find him.
Speaker: Well, just look for him McGowan, right? Yeah, I can't find it. You got it. You got this. okay
Speaker: Whatever. ah Yeah, I think i think Nico Provo is somebody to keep an eye on. he was He had a slow start to the tournament, but he didn't wrestle at all last year, and he had some action this summer, but this was his first event back.
Speaker: Somebody worth keeping an eye on to me. They beat up on Poo in the third place match. Okay. Notable. 7-0.
Speaker: Yeah. 133. Evan Frost wins by injury default to or against Kyler Larkin who beat Dylan Campbell in the semis. Kyler Larkin did in a very entertaining 9-8 match. Dylan Campbell a ah pleasant surprise to 133.
Speaker: He's been a lot of fun to watch. He's had some really great wins. He did lose for third place to Tyler Ferrara, but he also beat Ferrara earlier in the tournament, one to zero So, 1-1.
Speaker: But, what do you feel? Because, like, Evan Frost, he beat Luke Willichell to get in the finals. Kyler Larkin beat Tyler Knox and and Dylan Campbell. How do you feel about those two?
Speaker: Tyler Knox and Dylan Campbell. but Yeah. How do you feel about Frost and Larkin? Like, oh they definitely had different paths to the finals. Frost has kind of proved himself at this weight in the past, but struggled last year. Tyler Larkin's up and coming.
Speaker: ah i don't know. I think Kyler, i don't know, man. I think Kyler probably like fringe at the best. I'd say he's a fringe like placer.
Speaker: You think so? At this point, yeah, I don't know. But then I mean, ty beating Tyler Knox 8-3, that's pretty impressive. But I don't know. It's kind of weird how people people give you know people talk about Caleb Larkin a lot more than they talk about Kyler Larkin.
Speaker: I always thought both guys were really impressive in high school. um But I don't know.
Speaker: I'm interested to see what Kyler is able to do against that top tier 133. against yeah Lucas Bird, Ben Dovino, Drake Ayala, and Marcus Blaze. I think... He's wrestled ah he's wrestled Blaze before in freestyle, right? Didn't he wrestle him earlier this summer? this This summer, yeah. Lost to him for the U20 spot.
Speaker: But, I mean, that length and his ability to wrestle through positions can be challenging, especially in folk style. So I want to see that for some of these guys.
Speaker: Both him and Campbell, I think are fun additions to the weight that I wasn't really seeing at the start of the season. So I'm excited about that.
Speaker: Uh, all right. Anthony Echemendia at 141 pounds is your champion. He beats Eli Griffin in the finals. Uh, kind of, that's kind of it at the weight.
Speaker: Um,
Speaker: Yeah. It's good. Romney, Romney losing to Zeth. Yeah. Zeth Romney lost to Singleton. He was up, I think seven to seven to three, think, uh, with writing time in the third period and then gives up a takedown and gives up, I think four points and of stalling to lose 10 to nine, I think, uh,
Speaker: and then wins his blood round match to get on the podium, defaults from out from out ah from there.
Speaker: Singleton's tough, but I'm guessing Romney's just going to have some issues at 141. Why?
Speaker: He had an element. he had he had He had that length and leverage element that he was able to really utilize at 133 that's not as much of a factor at 141. Well, the Nash-Singleton match makes you think that it was a It was a conditioning thing.
Speaker: Yeah, I think he just was kind of bad at stalling. I'm not going to lie. i Because i I broke down. Actually, i used his match as an example of like inconsistencies in stalling when it comes to officiating.
Speaker: But, I mean, he didn't. Maybe you're right. Maybe. But I don't know why conditioning would be a problem. He's bumped up a weight. Yeah. He still looks big.
Speaker: Yeah, he put on size, so maybe it's still a cut. But I don't know. yeah Yeah. I was low on him. you know i I didn't really expect him to do as well as he did at NCAAs last year.
Speaker: me too. And so I feel like I need to rectify that. i give I mean, yeah, maybe. And I don't know. He's probably going finish outside that top four ah group that we have at this weight.
Speaker: I don't think he really touches any of those guys. You don't think he could you don't think he would you would give Vega a good match?
Speaker: Maybe, but he might just Vega might just be better at the same game. Yeah, maybe. Maybe.
Speaker: I don't know That'd be a fun match. i think he would I think he would give Echemendia more fits. Kind of like Bridge Lovett.
Speaker: You know? Yeah. like i I see that. You're saying Vega would, or no, Romney would give Echemendia more problems. Yeah. right now But, you know, we could have seen the match.
Speaker: Just needed to not stall out against singleton and then beat griffin who had a little bit of a breakout performance he was a 125 pounder not that long ago so seeing him up at 141 and making the cklb finals he was a big pretty good well what did you think so i mean obviously you and ryan didn't share my opinion about that clip where he ah dropped um manville yeah what was your opinion I just thought it was like kind of unfortunate like the that the mat was they just kind of ran out of mat space and obviously he could have done a way better job like you know like when the when the whistle was blown you don't have to you don't have to drop the dude like that.
Speaker: Yeah, and it's it's kind of your it's not responsibility, right? Like in the rule book? you if As the person who is in control of the position, it is your responsibility to safely return the wrestler to the mat.
Speaker: ah And at the at the Division I level, wrestlers have been wrestling for a long time, and they know that if they go out of bounds, action stops. So there's no need for him to pick up Manville, walk out of bounds, and then return him to the mat.
Speaker: I mean, he when he doesn't even return to the matter. Yeah, but still, you absolutely like, you know, you know where the out of bounds is. It's right in front of you. It's not like it snuck up on him.
Speaker: Yeah. It's like it's probably fine. You're probably. Yeah, he probably did it on purpose. I mean, he probably the whole. The whole match was chippy.
Speaker: Yeah. Manville is also a tough, aggressive wrestler. So it's okay. and Right. He's he got up and wrestled. but It was no big deal.
Speaker: I think he was probably also overreacting. I mean, but your knee hitting the car. mean, is that concrete or I look like carpeted. So, okay. So not that big of maybe I think, uh, yeah, it's largely fine. But then he did, he got tincture unsportsmanlike in his match against Jordan Titus too.
Speaker: Uh, Yeah, like, I think you you can't see it. You can't watch it in the match because the camera cuts out for like 10 seconds. But if you watch Stoney Buell versus Cale Swenson, which shows that match in the background, you see, I think he like headbutts Titus on the way they go out of bounds or something like that. i't I couldn't really tell, but... Who does he wrestle for? yeah ah He wrestles for Ryder now.
Speaker: He used to be... I think he used to be Cal Poly. want to say.
Speaker: I want to say that he had like a breakout performance at Midlands two years ago. i don't know. I'm looking up his wrestlers though right now. Or like the Soldier Salute or something.
Speaker: Let's see here. But yeah, I mean, whatever. Wrestling's wrestling. ah Oh, Cal Baptist is where he used to be.
Speaker: And he, yeah, he lost to Luke Stanich, I think in the finals of Midlands or in the semis or something like that, but took third or second, beating some pretty tough guys.
Speaker: ah But yeah, but we could even see that rematch this year. Cool. 149. Jackson Joy, talk of the town.
Speaker: How do you stop that cradle? I didn't even, I have, so this is one thing that I have not seen. i haven't seen how he does his cradle. I haven't watched any. So he gets a he gets a figure four leg ride, goes cross body and he will reach over the top of his opponent's arm and like pull it back as if he's pulling a chicken wing.
Speaker: But instead of driving his his arm straight across his opponent's back. firearm No, no, no. So like if I'm figure forward on the right, I'm taking my left hand and I'm working a bar.
Speaker: But instead of going to the back like I would with a bar, I go I snake my hand back behind his leg and then my other my right hand is already up by where I'm going to lock the cradle and like.
Speaker: Yeah, I don't know. ya So he's figured forward on the right. Uh huh. Is he what? What arm is he pulling in? Which arm left? That's what I, okay. So yeah, he's pulling in the opposite arm. Speaker: Waters wins by medical forfeit in the finals over Vinny Zerbin. Vinny Zerbin had a very fun match in the semis with Daniel Cardenas. I picked Cardenas to win this because that dude loves to wrestle tournaments. That dude is great in tournaments. ah He... He will be a surprising problem, I think.
Speaker: Um... in March just because I don't think he's necessarily the best dual wrestler, but I think he's a great tournament wrestler.
Speaker: Who? Daniel Cardenas. I'm sorry, nice Daniel Cardenas. Yeah. was um You think he's, you think he's wrestling down right now? you're saying?
Speaker: I'm saying people are going to be down on him because they'll see him take losses or have questionable matches in duels. Whereas I think in brackets, in tournaments, where you have back-to-back matches and it's more of a grind, I think Daniel Cardenas is better suited for that. He seems to be a guy who's like much more interested in that type of a wrestling setup where you just you're not going to be perfect.
Speaker: You're falling apart a little bit at the seams. But you go out there and you you bust your ass. He... would Yes, you CW and CW. Yeah. these ah
Speaker: He did have a close match in the quarters against Cam Catrabone, won that one fifteen to twelve dropped his semis to Zerben, and then on the backside, he wrestled Catrabone again. and people were like, oh man, he almost he barely barely beat Cam Catrabone. This isn't a good sign. But then Catrabone makes it back to the third place match, and then Cardenas texts him 21-5.
Speaker: So... what happened then something Didn't Catrabone just get up like big or something? get a like get In the quarters? exchange Let me take a look here.
Speaker: Cardenas went takedown, cut, takedown, cut, takedown, reversal. So it was nine to two Catrabone got a reversal in 4 near fall, which put it at 9-8, and then there was an escape, so 10-8, and then...
Speaker: and then ah period three, it looks like Cardenas picked bottom, gave up four near fall, got an escape and a takedown with writing time. Once wins 15 to 12. Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: But Ty waters, I think people are underrating Tyrod Ty waters, even though he's the number one guy in the country. I think a lot of people are like, man, he's not really the number one guy. You got PJ Duke.
Speaker: You got Meyer Shapiro. You got Brandon cannon. I don't think Ty Waters is going to end up being the national champ this year. And like, he very well might not be, but he's not going to be easy to beat for anybody.
Speaker: Yeah. I got to see him against, I mean, I might be one of those people. I'm a huge, I love the way Ty Waters wrestles. I'm a big Ty Waters fan, but I'm a little cautious right now. What makes you cautious?
Speaker: I just think he's had a lot of time off and sometimes you see freshmen, have those spectacular tournaments or those really, really impressive freshman years, and then they never get back to that point.
Speaker: Well, let me tell you what, Reese. we'll We'll find out pretty quickly what Ty Waters is made of. Why? Oklahoma State, West Virginia happens on Sunday. Oh, yeah. See, that'll that's what I need to see right there.

Speaker: Midland, Soldier Salute are the only two that really come to my mind. No. No. No. Linden would open?

Speaker: Yeah, it's like the first weekend. Did they do it this year? know. just feel like I didn't hear anything about it. Yeah, I don't know.
Speaker: But I still feel across the board, if you win the CKLV, you are somebody who's at least in the conversation of finishing on the podium. and And your weakest example of that this year is going to be at 174, which we'll get to.
Speaker: But I still feel like that's a good indicator. And I don't think you could say that for any other tournament.
Speaker: No? No other tournament? Probably not ah okay not. Okay. 165. Kind of a snoozer of a weight. Joey Blaze wins it.

But yeah, I mean, 165 Joey Blaze, it's, I don't think anybody worse than him is ever going to beat him, but don't know if he's showing me that he is going to be able to beat Mitchell Mesinbrink, Michael Caliendo, Ladarian Lockett. I think he's just going to be the dust and plot of this weight.
Speaker: You don't think he can hang with those those three guys? I think he could beat Caliendo for sure. I mean, he's beating Caliendo. no, yeah. I think he's he beat him this summer, right?
Speaker: Oh, yeah. I guess that's... Did he? I think so. I think he beat him in freestyle. I mean, Caliendo, his freestyle results were not great, but I'm pretty sure it happened.
Speaker: ty whalen dude i mean no i mean actually yeah like i guess it kind of depends no because you you'll probably see he can he can contend with ladarian and and caliendo that yeah but i i just don't feel like i have a hard time seeing him getting picked apart by anybody I don't think he's going picked apart, but I guess it's just how sort of he, I mean, he had to, he had to, I don't know if it's a, if this is a compliment to Nico Ruiz or if it's a knock on Joey blaze, he had to fight to get a takedown on Nico Ruiz for like five of of the seven minutes of the match.
Speaker: It was not easy for him to do. And he only get, he only get one takedown. And so it just doesn't inspire a lot of confidence. That's where I'm at. That's interesting. I mean, Nico Ruiz, did he he had a good tournament, I guess. like Did he beat anybody?
Speaker: Made the finals, beat Cesar Alvin in the quarters, and one of the Espinoza-Owens brothers, I don't know which one. I'm going to say Marcus. It was Marcus.
Speaker: um I mean, topside, Joey Blaze beat Ty Whalen, who's probably the third best guy. Yeah, he took third.
Speaker: How good Waylon, too? that's what i want I want to know where Waylon's at. He seems to be better at 165 than he was at... He's a big boy now.
Speaker: yeah i mean he yeah Yeah. Did he win Midlands at 149 like two years ago? Like two years ago, right? Beat Ty Waters and maybe maybe also that one dude from ASU.

Speaker: Okay. Yeah. i think the blaze I think Blaze versus Messinbrink is interesting. It intrigues me. so I'll say that much.
Speaker: Yeah, I mean, i mean I'm um'm always interested to see who is able to give those gosh darn Nittany Lions a test. And Joey Blaze could be that guy, but he could also be just... He could be a Nittany Lions slayer.
