Welcome and Introduction

00:00:01
Speaker
Welcome back to the Bar and Session, everybody. It is a two-man crew tonight between me and Reese. But we're here. We're talking about some wrestling. We're late.

Delayed CKLV Discussion

00:00:13
Speaker
We didn't get to talk about the CKLV in a timely manner, and that's okay. Reese, how are you? I'm all right. How are you?
00:00:24
Speaker
Been better, been worse. Somewhere in the middle, right? ah

CKLV Overview and Impact

00:00:29
Speaker
All right. Yeah, you want to get do you want to get started on the CKLV? Where do you want to start with this? CKLV?
00:00:36
Speaker
You know, I told you i was going to watch some CKLV before I wanted to talk about it. And I watched watch some, but not a lot. Yeah.
00:00:47
Speaker
I didn't watch any of the lightweights. I mostly watched, like, the upperweights, which is not like me. but Okay. I don't even know. I mean, the matches I was most excited for didn't even happen. So, I don't know. I was kind of bummed about that. Like, you know, Strickenberger winning... Dude, clip Cliff Keen was just so...
00:01:10
Speaker
So down this year. And I'm sure it's because of the duels. It is. i And it's weird because people are like people generally were saying like CKLV is still going to be absolutely like phenomenal. And it was good.
00:01:25
Speaker
it is the It is the best regular season tournament that we have and are going to have this year. um But it was definitely down. like Look 141 pounds. you but you could have had and and Five and six.
00:01:42
Speaker
If Ragasen. If all the teams that typically go had went. Yeah, we would have had um Oklahoma State, Ohio State, Nebraska there, which would have added Jesse Mendez, Sergio Vega, and Brock Hardy.
00:01:55
Speaker
a That's a game changer. Yeah, yeah, and that's and that's just one weight. But like even Virginia Tech went, who they went to national duels, but they didn't send like they're all of their guys.

Key Absentees at CKLV

00:02:12
Speaker
Eddie Ventresca didn't go. so ah Sonny Sasso wrestled, but at the Patriot Open, didn't wrestle CKLV.
00:02:19
Speaker
So I don't know. think George Mason.
00:02:26
Speaker
I think. You're saying he like traveled with the team but wrestled at a different tournament. No, no, but he wrestled on the weekend. So I don't know why he didn't wrestle at CKLV where he would have had great competition with Rademacher and Novak, who he's beaten, and Elam. yeah so I don't know it's And ah honestly, with the news that we got today that the national duels will be moving to December 12th and 13th next year It's probably going to be even worse.

National Duels and CKLV Scheduling

00:02:58
Speaker
I didn't even see that. Yeah, that dropped earlier today. um i mean, here's what I think. I think that the national duels can be an event that happens at the end of the first semester. That is a great kickoff to to end the first semester, to start the dual conference season in the second semester.
00:03:21
Speaker
But a tournament like the Cliff Key in Las Vegas Invitational is going to have to adjust to that. um I don't know how, I don't know if they're going to move themselves to like the weekend before Thanksgiving or if they're just going to stay put and kind of just be a weaker event.

CKLV 125-pound Highlights

00:03:37
Speaker
I don't know, but yeah, let's ah briskly walk through the CKLV results and ah talk about some, some notable results that we can find here and there.
00:03:55
Speaker
125 pounds, Jett Strickenberger beats Maximo Renteria in the finals and beat Steve-O Poulin in the semis. Renteria beat Nico Provo. ah an An entertaining weight all around. I was happy with all the wrestling that went down.
00:04:11
Speaker
um
00:04:13
Speaker
Jett Strickenberger.
00:04:17
Speaker
Yeah, how did he look against Poulin? How did he look against Poulin? he He won seven four sudden victory. ah And I think he's given up a takedown in every single match he's wrestled.
00:04:30
Speaker
But he has found a way to win. And i I was impressed with a win against Poulin. I was impressed with Renteria, who, with the way he was things were shaping up for him this weekend, I was like, Renteria is about to announce himself as an All-American

Strickenberger's Future Prospects

00:04:47
Speaker
contender. And Jess Strickenberger still beats him.
00:04:50
Speaker
So...
00:04:52
Speaker
I, with, we, we know how Strickenberger does against a guy like Troy Spratly. Are we going to see him continue to do that against guys like Dean Peterson?
00:05:05
Speaker
ah
00:05:08
Speaker
Names that I'm b blanking on. Jory Bolk, Eddie Ventresca, Sheldon Seymour. Or is he going to need knock up into that top tier and wrestle guys like Vince Robinson and Luke Lillard all like that? I don't know.
00:05:19
Speaker
I can't, I'm trying to figure out, I'm trying to navigate this

Nico Provo's Comeback

00:05:22
Speaker
bracket here. I'm trying to figure out where Mark Anthony McGowan got knocked back to. he lost to Provo, I see. and then I can't find him on the backside. I don't understand how these brackets.
00:05:34
Speaker
I mean, it, it, it works. It's formatted like a normal bracket, but it is definitely a different, uh, I cannot find him.
00:05:46
Speaker
Well, just look for him McGowan, right? Yeah, I can't find it. You got it. You got this. okay
00:05:57
Speaker
Whatever. ah Yeah, I think i think Nico Provo is somebody to keep an eye on. he was He had a slow start to the tournament, but he didn't wrestle at all last year, and he had some action this summer, but this was his first event back.

Evan Frost vs. Kyler Larkin

00:06:16
Speaker
Somebody worth keeping an eye on to me. They beat up on Poo in the third place match. Okay. Notable. 7-0.
00:06:31
Speaker
Yeah. 133. Evan Frost wins by injury default to or against Kyler Larkin who beat Dylan Campbell in the semis. Kyler Larkin did in a very entertaining 9-8 match. Dylan Campbell a ah pleasant surprise to 133.
00:06:50
Speaker
He's been a lot of fun to watch. He's had some really great wins. He did lose for third place to Tyler Ferrara, but he also beat Ferrara earlier in the tournament, one to zero So, 1-1.
00:07:01
Speaker
But, what do you feel? Because, like, Evan Frost, he beat Luke Willichell to get in the finals. Kyler Larkin beat Tyler Knox and and Dylan Campbell. How do you feel about those two?
00:07:17
Speaker
Tyler Knox and Dylan Campbell. but Yeah. How do you feel about Frost and Larkin? Like, oh they definitely had different paths to the finals. Frost has kind of proved himself at this weight in the past, but struggled last year. Tyler Larkin's up and coming.
00:07:32
Speaker
ah i don't know. I think Kyler, i don't know, man. I think Kyler probably like fringe at the best. I'd say he's a fringe like placer.
00:07:45
Speaker
You think so? At this point, yeah, I don't know. But then I mean, ty beating Tyler Knox 8-3, that's pretty impressive. But I don't know. It's kind of weird how people people give you know people talk about Caleb Larkin a lot more than they talk about Kyler Larkin.
00:08:01
Speaker
I always thought both guys were really impressive in high school. um But I don't know.
00:08:09
Speaker
I'm interested to see what Kyler is able to do against that top tier 133. against yeah Lucas Bird, Ben Dovino, Drake Ayala, and Marcus Blaze. I think... He's wrestled ah he's wrestled Blaze before in freestyle, right?

Romney's Challenges at 141 Pounds

00:08:25
Speaker
Didn't he wrestle him earlier this summer? this This summer, yeah. Lost to him for the U20 spot.
00:08:31
Speaker
But, I mean, that length and his ability to wrestle through positions can be challenging, especially in folk style. So I want to see that for some of these guys.
00:08:45
Speaker
Both him and Campbell, I think are fun additions to the weight that I wasn't really seeing at the start of the season. So I'm excited about that.
00:08:57
Speaker
Uh, all right. Anthony Echemendia at 141 pounds is your champion. He beats Eli Griffin in the finals. Uh, kind of, that's kind of it at the weight.
00:09:10
Speaker
Um,
00:09:12
Speaker
Yeah. It's good. Romney, Romney losing to Zeth. Yeah. Zeth Romney lost to Singleton. He was up, I think seven to seven to three, think, uh, with writing time in the third period and then gives up a takedown and gives up, I think four points and of stalling to lose 10 to nine, I think, uh,
00:09:38
Speaker
and then wins his blood round match to get on the podium, defaults from out from out ah from there.
00:09:47
Speaker
Singleton's tough, but I'm guessing Romney's just going to have some issues at 141. Why?
00:09:56
Speaker
He had an element. he had he had He had that length and leverage element that he was able to really utilize at 133 that's not as much of a factor at 141. Well, the Nash-Singleton match makes you think that it was a It was a conditioning thing.
00:10:13
Speaker
Yeah, I think he just was kind of bad at stalling.

Romney's NCAA Surprise

00:10:17
Speaker
I'm not going to lie. i Because i I broke down. Actually, i used his match as an example of like inconsistencies in stalling when it comes to officiating.
00:10:27
Speaker
But, I mean, he didn't. Maybe you're right. Maybe. But I don't know why conditioning would be a problem. He's bumped up a weight. Yeah. He still looks big.
00:10:40
Speaker
Yeah, he put on size, so maybe it's still a cut. But I don't know. yeah Yeah. I was low on him. you know i I didn't really expect him to do as well as he did at NCAAs last year.
00:10:55
Speaker
me too. And so I feel like I need to rectify that. i give I mean, yeah, maybe. And I don't know.

Romney's Position Among 141 Elite

00:11:08
Speaker
He's probably going finish outside that top four ah group that we have at this weight.
00:11:15
Speaker
I don't think he really touches any of those guys. You don't think he could you don't think he would you would give Vega a good match?
00:11:24
Speaker
Maybe, but he might just Vega might just be better at the same game. Yeah, maybe. Maybe.
00:11:33
Speaker
I don't know That'd be a fun match. i think he would I think he would give Echemendia more fits. Kind of like Bridge Lovett.
00:11:43
Speaker
You know? Yeah. like i I see that. You're saying Vega would, or no, Romney would give Echemendia more problems. Yeah. right now But, you know, we could have seen the match.
00:11:57
Speaker
Just needed to not stall out against singleton and then beat griffin who had a little bit of a breakout performance he was a 125 pounder not that long ago so seeing him up at 141 and making the cklb finals he was a big pretty good well what did you think so i mean obviously you and ryan didn't share my opinion about that clip where he ah dropped um manville yeah what was your opinion I just thought it was like kind of unfortunate like the that the mat was they just kind of ran out of mat space and obviously he could have done a way better job like you know like when the when the whistle was blown you don't have to you don't have to drop the dude like that.
00:12:44
Speaker
Yeah, and it's it's kind of your it's not responsibility, right? Like in the rule book? you if As the person who is in control of the position, it is your responsibility to safely return the wrestler to

Romney's High School to College Transition

00:12:58
Speaker
the mat.
00:12:58
Speaker
ah And at the at the Division I level, wrestlers have been wrestling for a long time, and they know that if they go out of bounds, action stops. So there's no need for him to pick up Manville, walk out of bounds, and then return him to the mat.
00:13:15
Speaker
I mean, he when he doesn't even return to the matter. Yeah, but still, you absolutely like, you know, you know where the out of bounds is. It's right in front of you. It's not like it snuck up on him.
00:13:26
Speaker
Yeah. It's like it's probably fine. You're probably. Yeah, he probably did it on purpose. I mean, he probably the whole. The whole match was chippy.
00:13:37
Speaker
Yeah. Manville is also a tough, aggressive wrestler. So it's okay. and Right. He's he got up and wrestled. but It was no big deal.
00:13:48
Speaker
I think he was probably also overreacting. I mean, but your knee hitting the car. mean, is that concrete or I look like carpeted. So, okay. So not that big of maybe I think, uh, yeah, it's largely fine. But then he did, he got tincture unsportsmanlike in his match against Jordan Titus too.
00:14:13
Speaker
Uh, Yeah, like, I think you you can't see it. You can't watch it in the match because the camera cuts out for like 10 seconds. But if you watch Stoney Buell versus Cale Swenson, which shows that match in the background, you see, I think he like headbutts Titus on the way they go out of bounds or something like that. i't I couldn't really tell, but... Who does he wrestle for? yeah ah He wrestles for Ryder now.
00:14:39
Speaker
He used to be... I think he used to be Cal Poly. want to say.

Ryder's College Journey

00:14:46
Speaker
I want to say that he had like a breakout performance at Midlands two years ago. i don't know. I'm looking up his wrestlers though right now. Or like the Soldier Salute or something.
00:15:02
Speaker
Let's see here. But yeah, I mean, whatever. Wrestling's wrestling. ah Oh, Cal Baptist is where he used to be.

Jackson Joy's Cradle Technique

00:15:15
Speaker
And he, yeah, he lost to Luke Stanich, I think in the finals of Midlands or in the semis or something like that, but took third or second, beating some pretty tough guys.
00:15:29
Speaker
ah But yeah, but we could even see that rematch this year. Cool. 149. Jackson Joy, talk of the town.
00:15:40
Speaker
How do you stop that cradle? I didn't even, I have, so this is one thing that I have not seen. i haven't seen how he does his cradle. I haven't watched any. So he gets a he gets a figure four leg ride, goes cross body and he will reach over the top of his opponent's arm and like pull it back as if he's pulling a chicken wing.
00:16:04
Speaker
But instead of driving his his arm straight across his opponent's back. firearm No, no, no. So like if I'm figure forward on the right, I'm taking my left hand and I'm working a bar.
00:16:16
Speaker
But instead of going to the back like I would with a bar, I go I snake my hand back behind his leg and then my other my right hand is already up by where I'm going to lock the cradle and like.
00:16:29
Speaker
Yeah, I don't know. ya So he's figured forward on the right. Uh huh. Is he what? What arm is he pulling in? Which arm left? That's what I, okay. So yeah, he's pulling in the opposite arm. That's what I was Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. yeah I gotcha. My bad. Uh, yeah. And he, it worked on Kyler Lark and it worked on Eli Griffin, uh, or Eli Rivera.
00:16:54
Speaker
I don't know. It might be a problem for guys at, uh, at this weight, especially if you're shorter. I mean, i gotta see this. Caleb Larkin isn't short, but it worked on him three times. So,
00:17:09
Speaker
Yeah. What's it was what was the deal with that? was he like Was he just like... Was it a... I think it was a I've never seen this before situation. situation Where he was like, oh, what do I do? I'm getting cradled.
00:17:25
Speaker
I can't stop the thing. Maybe. i don't know. cause it like It definitely seemed like he kind of It seemed like Larkin was just like defeated by the third cradle, which I would i understand.
00:17:38
Speaker
um
00:17:41
Speaker
Yeah. I don't know. But, I mean, ah if he is wrestling Shane Van Ness, Shane's going to have to have a plan for that position or that situation or just to never end up on bottom. Was on... Did he ever get on top of Bassett?
00:18:01
Speaker
No, yeah. I think he wrote him out.
00:18:05
Speaker
That's impressive. Maybe. I don't remember. That is wild. The cradle? Watching it right here. Which one? Which one are you watching?
00:18:18
Speaker
What does like threading the arm like that, what does that do? I think he does that that it doesn't it doesn't like you're not thinking about a cradle whenever he threads that arm.
00:18:32
Speaker
I mean, that and I guess ah like that arm is completely trapped too. Right. Like you're it's kind of stuck back there. Oh, he got it. Then he gets gets it out. I texted Yanni about it.
00:18:43
Speaker
Yeah, I i texted Yanni about it. and I was like, I don't know if you work this system with him, but it's wicked. And I don't know who did who helped him develop it. I love it.
00:18:54
Speaker
This is great. A p kid, right? No, Wadsworth, Ohio.
00:19:00
Speaker
Yeah, dude. Then he just he just Larkin just let him lock that second one. Yeah. And the third one's kind of the same. Yeah.
00:19:11
Speaker
He went right to it. ah Other notable results, Eli Rivera had had a little bit of a weekend. He beat Jacob Frost in the semis 11 to four and he beat somebody else.

Surprises at CKLV 149-pound Class

00:19:28
Speaker
Who else did he beat? Reese, help me.
00:19:34
Speaker
trying. Shoot. It's loading. Reese. What's happening with you? Reese, who did he beat in the quarters? I don't know.
00:19:47
Speaker
I got to pull up the brackets now. Look what you're doing to me. Dude, yeah, me my my... You're going to make me go to this. So... cursed website, this this cursed bracketing software. Lachlan McNeil.
00:20:02
Speaker
Lachlan McNeil. That's right. And then Lachlan. Lachlan had a bedtime on the backside. Is at all an all time low, dude. This weight is ah this weight is a disaster.
00:20:14
Speaker
He got ah Colin guy majored him majored Lachlan McNeil. And then Aiden Valencia loses to Larkin.
00:20:25
Speaker
who trades medical forfeits with frost. I don't know, dude. I don't know. It's a mess. This way. It's a mess. du I'm having this same issue. Oh, there he is. Okay. I found him.
00:20:40
Speaker
I still, I never found Mark Anthony McGowan in the 25. I never found him on the backside. Could not figure out where he got beat.
00:20:51
Speaker
Wait, so Colin Guy, I mean, I can't get a beat on him either. i This whole way does, yeah, just... it's a Dude, it's a... Yeah, it's just... You know what I thought about? I mentioned this in a video that A solo video that I did, I think yesterday or maybe the day before.
00:21:06
Speaker
ah Virginia Tech has three options at 149 right now, this season. They have Caleb Henson, Bo Bassett, and Colin Guy, and all of them are within the top 20.
00:21:17
Speaker
Two of them are title contenders. That's kind of crazy. isn't Is Colin Guy, has he been their starter this whole season? I thought they started some on someone else too.
00:21:31
Speaker
Or no.

Virginia Tech's Depth in Wrestling

00:21:32
Speaker
That's a question. That's a good question. I'm looking it up right now. ah Oh, Noah Nininger. Okay.
00:21:44
Speaker
He's five and one so far this year. got They're deep. They're rolling in the deep. Dude, that they're going to have some lineup issues. A log jam.
00:21:57
Speaker
When is Ethan Miller coming back? Come on, dog. Yeah. You got to get your year in this year before it's too late. And who's yeah who's wrestling 57 right now? now Well, it will be Ethan Miller.
00:22:10
Speaker
But right now, it's Frank DiBella. Oh, thought they had someone pretty good. No, they got Ryan Burton at 165.
00:22:20
Speaker
who is in red shirt, I believe. Maybe, maybe not. Then they got me do they got guys they got Aaron Seidel down at 133 who I don't think has wrestled yet.
00:22:32
Speaker
du Yeah, yeah. Well, that is and this is a team and exciting team.

Bo Bassett's NCAA Title Chances

00:22:36
Speaker
This is a team man. They're gonna be so good in the next few years.
00:22:43
Speaker
Hey, so so tell me tell me what do you think? Do you think Bo Bassett should should go try to win an NCAA title this year? Now? Bo Bassett? Now, right now. Yes.
00:22:53
Speaker
Him and Jax Forrest, I think both of them could do that. I think it makes more sense to to to send out Bo before sending out Jax. Why? Because Jax has a ridiculously loaded weight at 133. Oh, yeah.
00:23:11
Speaker
yeah I mean, Bo could he could potentially dominate. He's already major, the number two guy in the country at 149. Yeah. yeah
00:23:22
Speaker
So I think it makes more sense. But. What do I know? But I mean, I'm sure if it was no no word of him doing that, right? Yeah, I'm sure if it was like possible that people would be talking about it.
00:23:37
Speaker
So. I'll save my breath.

Ty Waters' Underrated Potential

00:23:42
Speaker
Waters wins by medical forfeit in the finals over Vinny Zerbin. Vinny Zerbin had a very fun match in the semis with Daniel Cardenas. I picked Cardenas to win this because that dude loves to wrestle tournaments. That dude is great in tournaments. ah He... He will be a surprising problem, I think.
00:24:04
Speaker
Um... in March just because I don't think he's necessarily the best dual wrestler, but I think he's a great tournament wrestler.
00:24:16
Speaker
Who? Daniel Cardenas. I'm sorry, nice Daniel Cardenas. Yeah. was um You think he's, you think he's wrestling down right now? you're saying?
00:24:28
Speaker
I'm saying people are going to be down on him because they'll see him take losses or have questionable matches in duels. Whereas I think in brackets, in tournaments, where you have back-to-back matches and it's more of a grind, I think Daniel Cardenas is better suited for that. He seems to be a guy who's like much more interested in that type of a wrestling setup where you just you're not going to be perfect.
00:24:55
Speaker
You're falling apart a little bit at the seams. But you go out there and you you bust your ass. He... would Yes, you CW and CW. Yeah.

Daniel Cardenas' Tournament Strength

00:25:12
Speaker
these ah
00:25:15
Speaker
He did have a close match in the quarters against Cam Catrabone, won that one fifteen to twelve dropped his semis to Zerben, and then on the backside, he wrestled Catrabone again. and people were like, oh man, he almost he barely barely beat Cam Catrabone. This isn't a good sign. But then Catrabone makes it back to the third place match, and then Cardenas texts him 21-5.
00:25:34
Speaker
So... what happened then something Didn't Catrabone just get up like big or something? get a like get In the quarters? exchange Let me take a look here.
00:25:48
Speaker
Cardenas went takedown, cut, takedown, cut, takedown, reversal. So it was nine to two Catrabone got a reversal in 4 near fall, which put it at 9-8, and then there was an escape, so 10-8, and then...
00:26:00
Speaker
and then ah period three, it looks like Cardenas picked bottom, gave up four near fall, got an escape and a takedown with writing time. Once wins 15 to 12. Yeah.
00:26:14
Speaker
Yeah.
00:26:16
Speaker
But Ty waters, I think people are underrating Tyrod Ty waters, even though he's the number one guy in the country. I think a lot of people are like, man, he's not really the number one guy. You got PJ Duke.
00:26:28
Speaker
You got Meyer Shapiro. You got Brandon cannon. I don't think Ty Waters is going to end up being the national champ this year. And like, he very well might not be, but he's not going to be easy to beat for anybody.
00:26:40
Speaker
Yeah. I got to see him against, I mean, I might be one of those people. I'm a huge, I love the way Ty Waters wrestles. I'm a big Ty Waters fan, but I'm a little cautious right now. What makes you cautious?
00:26:55
Speaker
I just think he's had a lot of time off and sometimes you see freshmen, have those spectacular tournaments or those really, really impressive freshman years, and then they never get back to that point.
00:27:12
Speaker
Well, let me tell you what, Reese. we'll We'll find out pretty quickly what Ty Waters is made of. Why? Oklahoma State, West Virginia happens on Sunday. Oh, yeah. See, that'll that's what I need to see right there.
00:27:28
Speaker
That is what will tell you what you need to know. Sunday. Sunday. Sunday. What's it on?

Evaluating CKLV's Significance

00:27:37
Speaker
It's...
00:27:40
Speaker
Why do you ask me these difficult questions? Sorry. I don't know. all right. I'll look it up. Oh,
00:27:51
Speaker
no. What is it I got it. I got it. It's I think it's at West Virginia, isn't it? Air Force, Arizona State crew clash. It is in West Virginia.
00:28:05
Speaker
I'm guessing ESPN plus.
00:28:10
Speaker
Yeah, West Virginia. If not flow. Yeah, flow. That could be. Yep. Those are my two guesses. If that if it's flow, then I guess I'll just kiss my chances of watching it. Goodbye.
00:28:22
Speaker
Sorry. yeah know, I mean, if you want to watch, you can. It's not the end of the world. Be all right. Yeah, we'll see. all right.
00:28:33
Speaker
But yeah, that's 157. don't think I had anything else about the weights.
00:28:42
Speaker
No, not really. This isn't very brisk. we're not We're not briskly walking through this. No, but I mean, man, there was like, yes, the tournament's down, but there's still, I think it's i think it was still a very intriguing tournament for that like tier two, tier three range of wrestlers.
00:28:58
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, it was. Yeah. Do you think it's the best tournament still? Like you think? what's What's better than it? I don't know.
00:29:09
Speaker
Midland, Soldier Salute are the only two that really come to my mind. No. No. No.

Joey Blaze's Mixed Prospects

00:29:16
Speaker
Linden would open?
00:29:20
Speaker
Probably not, man. right Probably not. Because, i still think I still think across the board. Did the Michigan State open happen already?
00:29:32
Speaker
Yeah, it's like the first weekend. Did they do it this year? know. just feel like I didn't hear anything about it. Yeah, I don't know.
00:29:43
Speaker
But I still feel across the board, if you win the CKLV, you are somebody who's at least in the conversation of finishing on the podium. and And your weakest example of that this year is going to be at 174, which we'll get to.
00:30:00
Speaker
But I still feel like that's a good indicator. And I don't think you could say that for any other tournament.
00:30:08
Speaker
No? No other tournament? Probably not ah okay not. Okay. 165. Kind of a snoozer of a weight. Joey Blaze wins it.
00:30:21
Speaker
he's he doesn't He doesn't win any of his matches in spectacular fashion. He's not really... Oh, shit. Reese. Unbelievable.
00:30:33
Speaker
Whoops. whoa You're bringing that guy on here? who I heard him. Dude, my whole page just went to an ad. I silenced the video and then I just, it went black and it's just a big advertisement page now.
00:30:50
Speaker
This freaking website, man. I'm sorry to hear that. All right. Yeah, sorry. But yeah, I mean, 165 Joey Blaze, it's, I don't think anybody worse than him is ever going to beat him, but don't know if he's showing me that he is going to be able to beat Mitchell Mesinbrink, Michael Caliendo, Ladarian Lockett. I think he's just going to be the dust and plot of this weight.
00:31:17
Speaker
You don't think he can hang with those those three guys? I think he could beat Caliendo for sure. I mean, he's beating Caliendo. no, yeah. I think he's he beat him this summer, right?
00:31:29
Speaker
Oh, yeah. I guess that's... Did he? I think so. I think he beat him in freestyle. I mean, Caliendo, his freestyle results were not great, but I'm pretty sure it happened.
00:31:41
Speaker
ty whalen dude i mean no i mean actually yeah like i guess it kind of depends no because you you'll probably see he can he can contend with ladarian and and caliendo that yeah but i i just don't feel like i have a hard time seeing him getting picked apart by anybody I don't think he's going picked apart, but I guess it's just how sort of he, I mean, he had to, he had to, I don't know if it's a, if this is a compliment to Nico Ruiz or if it's a knock on Joey blaze, he had to fight to get a takedown on Nico Ruiz for like five of of the seven minutes of the match.
00:32:20
Speaker
It was not easy for him to do. And he only get, he only get one takedown. And so it just doesn't inspire a lot of confidence. That's where I'm at. That's interesting. I mean, Nico Ruiz, did he he had a good tournament,

Ty Whalen's Weight Class Performance

00:32:32
Speaker
I guess. like Did he beat anybody?
00:32:34
Speaker
Made the finals, beat Cesar Alvin in the quarters, and one of the Espinoza-Owens brothers, I don't know which one. I'm going to say Marcus. It was Marcus.
00:32:45
Speaker
um I mean, topside, Joey Blaze beat Ty Whalen, who's probably the third best guy. Yeah, he took third.
00:32:56
Speaker
How good Waylon, too? that's what i want I want to know where Waylon's at. He seems to be better at 165 than he was at... He's a big boy now.
00:33:08
Speaker
yeah i mean he yeah Yeah. Did he win Midlands at 149 like two years ago? Like two years ago, right? Beat Ty Waters and maybe maybe also that one dude from ASU.
00:33:26
Speaker
Sasha Iowa. Jesse Vasquez. Fresno State.
00:33:31
Speaker
Kyle Parco. Kyle Parco. think you're right. Both those guys. Wow. Okay. And then had a subpar. he had a not great. Not that.
00:33:43
Speaker
Not stellar year last year. Right. Right.
00:33:49
Speaker
Okay. Yeah. i think the blaze I think Blaze versus Messinbrink is interesting. It intrigues me. so I'll say that much.
00:34:00
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, i mean I'm um'm always interested to see who is able to give those gosh darn Nittany Lions a test. And Joey Blaze could be that guy, but he could also be just... He could be a Nittany Lions slayer.
00:34:17
Speaker
and you know what? I'll put our differences aside to see that happen. He and I. We can be comrades. Yeah. yeah Yeah.
00:34:29
Speaker
Always. 174. Reese,
00:34:34
Speaker
rece you've made your bed. Yeah. Now you gotta lay on it. Yikes. not i guess I guess, I mean, I really was just like...
00:34:48
Speaker
I don't know what I was seeing. I got totally fooled into sometimes, you know, when you watch something, when you watch, especially when you watch a limited amount of wrestling and you watch some guys wrestle, you get really like, you're kind of blown away. It's like the same thing. I like go into a practice room and you see some guys practicing and drilling and you're like, Oh my God, how these guys are, these guys look amazing.
00:35:14
Speaker
Right. And then they go out and now compete and, You realized that you were just, yeah, you were, had tunnel vision. You had rose colored glasses.

MJ Guyton at CKLV

00:35:26
Speaker
Yeah. How did he end even doing? MJ Guyton did not place. Who beat him on the backside? Uh, Mantenona.
00:35:36
Speaker
Yeah, that's unfortunate. Bo Mantenona. Uh, beat him. It was, he was up eight to five. Mantenona was, and then he got a pin. Uh, he pitted. He met in 50 second mark. So.
00:35:48
Speaker
Ouch. Yep. Yep. Yep. Now, I mean, Mantenona did. He took third, avenged his loss from the front side. i think that is an unfortunate guy to run into. I think he's able to beat.
00:36:01
Speaker
I think MJ Guyton is able to beat guys like he at least made the round or the blood round. Yes. Yes. But I think he's able to beat guys like.
00:36:12
Speaker
Eddie Enright from Northwestern.
00:36:16
Speaker
I don't know who that is. Oh. One of the placers? Yeah, he took fifth.
00:36:25
Speaker
ah Yeah, I think he can beat any of the bottom four placers. And I think he can beat Mantenona. Is Espinosa the guy who beat him on the front side? Yeah, Espinosa Owens.
00:36:37
Speaker
That was just kind of an unfortunate guy to run into. Well, yeah. Then don't lose round one. you know Oh, wait, wait, wait. He didn't lose him on in round one. He lost to Escobedo. Okay.
00:36:51
Speaker
Yeah, Guillermo. Yeah, don't lose to him. For sure. Yep. Yep, yep. But let's talk about the champ, Carter Schubert from Oklahoma.

Schubert's Surprise Win

00:37:01
Speaker
Dude, didn't realize that he won this weight. Oh, my gosh.
00:37:07
Speaker
Schubert? Carter Schubert. Wow. Yeah. This, I mean, he has had a very unimpressive college season college career, uh, prior to basically this tournament. I think he had, he had a win over, i think he beat cam Steed at the tiger style invite, but aside from that, nothing significant.
00:37:29
Speaker
And then he goes out. I mean, again, he didn't have to beat Mantenota to make the finals, but he, he beat Danny Wask in the finals. And I mean, maybe he's an all American contender round of 12 finisher type guy, but I think he's got, i think he's got more work. I think he's got to prove some things, which he Oklahoma wrestles Rutgers this weekend. So he'll have Lenny Pinto.
00:37:58
Speaker
That will be a telling match. Man, that'll be a good duel. That sounds like a good duel on paper, at least if Oklahoma. Yeah. older guy Yeah. The I mean, so Oklahoma's current situation.

Oklahoma's Wrestling Potential

00:38:12
Speaker
Rafael Hippolyta was out for the year. um Peyton Keller is it not who he used to be. Really? Dude, he's like here.
00:38:24
Speaker
No, he wrestled at some open and I think he went one and two or something like that. Not and not good. ah But Oklahoma's got some solid guys. They've got Schubert at 74, Saldano at 84, DJ Parker at 97, Juan Mora at 285, Conrad Hendrickson at 125, Tyler Wells at 141.
00:38:45
Speaker
They've got a solid lineup of guys in Joffrey if he ever makes it back. um They'll be tough. I don't know if they're able to beat Rutgers. That'll be a good duel. They beat Indiana, and that stung.
00:38:58
Speaker
Stung deeply. Who's their 65?
00:39:02
Speaker
It should be Peyton Keller. but Might end up being Owen Eck. Put him in. Put the young man in. He's hungry. He wrestled against Mitchell Misenbrink. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Don't.
00:39:15
Speaker
Yeah. That happened. We all saw it. Uh-huh. Alright. 184. Another story.
00:39:27
Speaker
another another underdog story James Conway from Franklin and Marshall.

James Conway's CKLV Performance

00:39:34
Speaker
Man, I feel like I watched him like it's in the first week of the season, and i was like, damn, he looked really good.
00:39:46
Speaker
can't remember where it was at, but that was like definitely I thought that was one of those situations that I was talking about earlier where I was like, he looked really good, but like
00:39:57
Speaker
how's he going to look against you know the against legit competition? And do now we know that he is, in fact, legit. Let's talk about it. Let's talk about it a little bit here. So he was the three seed.
00:40:09
Speaker
And he beats Aaron Izerov in the quarters from Columbia. He beats him 12 to nine. And then he has Isaac Dean in the semis. And now a lot of people are thinking about Isaac Dean as this guy who's incredibly difficult to take down, incredibly difficult to score on because we just saw that against Angelo Ferrari, who normally is able to take down everybody that wrestles.
00:40:29
Speaker
ah Conway took him down twice in the third period. Um, and Franklin and Marshall tweeted out, they said, there's a reason they give James Conway seven minutes. Cause he's going to use every single second of it.
00:40:41
Speaker
Uh, so it sounds like this is a guy who is going to be a problem for whoever he wrestles for every single second of the match. Uh, and then then, yeah, he makes it to the finals and he wrestles, um,
00:40:55
Speaker
brock mantanona and beats him 5-0 a very i don't know if you've if you've seen the takedown uh i don't know what brock mantanona was doing he kind of conway gets a single leg hikes it up uh puts his foot in his armpit and mantanona kind of like it looked like he was trying to do something and what he ended up doing was just falling on his stomach and like giving up the takedown um But I mean, then the rest of the match went the way it did and Conway won 5-0 and yeah, I mean, this is a good guy.
00:41:28
Speaker
He's tough.
00:41:33
Speaker
I did not see the takedown.
00:41:37
Speaker
It's on the internet. He's, a yeah, he looks really good. I think, how do you think he does against the top tier? Hmm. Tier like 184, you know, which yeah I feel like fleshed out top tier.
00:41:53
Speaker
Right. I mean, i think I could see him beating a guy like Zack Ryder.
00:41:59
Speaker
Yeah, for sure. I for sure think he you think he could be, you know, what about Welsh? Rocco's tougher. Rocco's tougher. ah And like I would be interested to see how Conway does against guys like Silas Allred and Jackson Smith.
00:42:17
Speaker
ah Yeah. yeah I think he's an interesting wrinkle in this weight, which we had kind of like sort of assumed was one way. And now he's kind of showing maybe it's a little different.
00:42:30
Speaker
A little different. Who's Brock? How's Brock's record?

Mantanona's Record Highlights

00:42:36
Speaker
It's pretty solid.
00:42:41
Speaker
Oh, dude, I get them mixed up. Because, I mean, what are you supposed to do? He's nine and two. His only other loss was to Aiden Sinclair. He got tack fault.
00:42:53
Speaker
But he beat Silas Allred. What? Yeah, he he beat he beat Silas Allred. ah And his other notable wins are Aaron Iserov, Brian Saldano.
00:43:07
Speaker
ah kind of it. Cesar Garza, kind of. ah Yeah. I mean, not bad.
00:43:21
Speaker
Yeah, he's all right. he's a I mean, I see him as an AA contender. gonna be It's going to be crowded up there, dude. It is going to be crowded up there. At 184, if you don't know people,
00:43:37
Speaker
I mean, it's Angelo Ferrari, Aiden Sinclair, Max McAnally, one, two, three.

Competitive Atmosphere at 184 Pounds

00:43:41
Speaker
And you can argue if you are a loyalist to the state college, Penn State, Nittany Lions, that Rocco Wells should be somewhere in there, but he's not.
00:43:50
Speaker
Jackson Smith, James Conway, Brock Mantonona, Dylan Fishback. Fishback is problems at the weight. Zach Ryder.
00:44:02
Speaker
Silas Allred. Other guys. I think he can do it. I would like to see. I would i think him versus Fishback, that would be an entertaining match.
00:44:12
Speaker
Dude, i yes, I enjoy watching Dylan Fishback wrestle. I think he's ah he's done he's done well in the Ohio State room. He's adopted things really well. He looks good.
00:44:25
Speaker
okay Okay.

Rocky Elam's CKLV Performance

00:44:27
Speaker
197. Rocky Elam is the champ. He beats Joey Novak 7-3 in the finals and Justin Rademacher in the semis four to three Novak had kind of an uneventful path to the finals. He should have had Bennett Berge who won his first match over and Angelo Posada who is tough. We know this about the Stanford wrestler beat him three to one and then medically forfeited out of the tournament. So I hope he's healthy. I hope he's just playing. Say no.
00:44:55
Speaker
So you don't know what's but's what's what's going on. Nope. But Posada would go on to wrestle out the backside and take fifth place. Very impressive. beating guys like Rune Lawrence and Spencer Mulberry, among others.
00:45:12
Speaker
ah Yeah. Rocky Elam. Rocky Elam is a problem for everybody at this weight class due to the fact that if he gets in on your legs, he will almost most likely finish. He's so long, dude. I mean, I saw people doing like full splits defending and he's just like like Michael Jordan arm in the in Space Jam, like reaching for your other ankle.
00:45:35
Speaker
Like... i don't know what you're supposed to do about it. But, man, oh, man. Rademacher. That match probably should have gone to overtime.
00:45:46
Speaker
What happened? Elam got a takedown. Huh? You're saying he stalled? Dude, bad. I mean, yeah. yeah he So, Elam got a takedown in the waning moments of the first period.
00:46:01
Speaker
Uh-oh. Alert, alert. I made it. Does that screw up the podcast? Does that screw up i don't know. or it says it's We'll see what happens.
00:46:13
Speaker
It says it's still recording. Yeah, I mean, I'll download everything and I'll work it out. Don't worry. Ryan, we're talking about 197. We're not going to go back on anything.
00:46:24
Speaker
So hello.

Rademacher's Weight Class Suitability

00:46:26
Speaker
I mean, 197. What? CKLV. OK, we're reviewing. We're 45 minutes into the episode. We're still talking about CKLV. Yeah, figured that's where you guys would be. I said we were going to be brief. We weren't.
00:46:39
Speaker
Whoops. How many tangents? Too much good wrestling. Yeah, there was. Yeah. How many? But Rocky Elam. How many tangents did you go on? Don't worry about it. You'll have to listen to find out.
00:46:53
Speaker
Yeah. Rocky looked good. ah Rocky looked good. How'd you feel about the semis?
00:47:03
Speaker
I mean, I don't know. I
00:47:09
Speaker
i mean, Rademacher is good, right? like Yeah. I just um of mycker shouldve been yeah think there should have been one more stall call in there.
00:47:20
Speaker
I do. one more. I do. I don't know. I worry when I watched Rademacher versus Parker, and I worry seeing how much trouble Rademacher had with Parker.
00:47:32
Speaker
And thinking back to the Parker Mira solo match that has me worried that Mira solo might be, uh, on another level compared to these du guys.
00:47:44
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, I think, I think Rademacher probably, and he might not even be the guy Mira solo. Yeah. That's, that's another, we we can have that conversation here soon. Uh,
00:47:59
Speaker
I think Rademacher is struggling to be the same guy that we see during the summer because 97 kilos and 197 are just too far apart from each other. I don't think he has that same effectiveness.
00:48:11
Speaker
Uh, cutting too much weight. and Yeah. I think Kyle Snyder kind of gave the formula for how to be successful at 97 kilos and then folks style heavyweight.

Potential Elam vs. Mirasola Matchup

00:48:22
Speaker
Hmm.
00:48:22
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah.
00:48:28
Speaker
Do you think, but do I mean, he still would have got pinned. i mean, I mean I mean, i don't know. I'm talking about the Kevin Gads and stuff.
00:48:37
Speaker
Right. Not that not pinned. I mean, he, he still probably wouldn't have won the year he got pinned. A heavyweight. Yeah, no, I, I agree. I don't think i I don't think there's any way around that, but yeah.
00:48:54
Speaker
Okay. i think i just want to, I just want to picture. How Rocky Elam does against Mira Sola.
00:49:03
Speaker
I think it's a lot closer than you think. Yeah. I mean, i don't see Rocky getting, getting picked apart. That's for sure. No, no.
00:49:15
Speaker
Uh, Rocky's going to get a takedown, but Mira Sola is also going to wear him out with the hand fight.
00:49:22
Speaker
I think, man, what I'm just thinking about how good Penn state is. Yeah, it's very frustrating. It's it's very frustrating. We're going talk about them just as soon as we wrap up CKLV. So let's go. Let's move on to heavyweight because there's a couple of things to to to talk about here. There's nothing else you wanted to touch on at 97. Nah, we're all good. Just Rocky.
00:49:46
Speaker
ah Well, we talked about a couple other things. You just weren't here. 285, Younger Bastida beats Christian Carroll 5-3 in the finals.

Heavyweight Future Matchups

00:49:56
Speaker
Younger Techfall Trevor Tinker to make the finals. And Christian Carroll beats a duo of ranked opponents.
00:50:07
Speaker
In the quarters, he took out Tegadali 11-2. Major decision over, think he was 5th or 6th in the country at the time.
00:50:17
Speaker
And then takes out Navy's Spencer Llanoska, who has has been a very big surprise. And that match was pretty awesome. um So Christian Carroll seems pretty legit.
00:50:32
Speaker
Yeah, seems like he's finally at a place where he's thriving. Yes, 100%. ah Younger Bastidas still has that edge over him.
00:50:43
Speaker
ah They were teammates last year, which I didn't really think about, but... Um, this also makes me wonder some familiarity probably. Yeah. This also makes me wonder like Braxton Amos, he's there.
00:50:59
Speaker
Christian Carroll, he's there. 285 is rounding out to be a fun weight class with, with Nick Feldman, AJ Ferrari, Isaac Trumbull, younger Bastida. When is all Trumbly Bumbly going to wrestle?
00:51:14
Speaker
Probably this. he I think he made his debut against Rutgers. Or is making it against Ohio State. He's listed as a probable.
00:51:25
Speaker
But I think they'll only wrestle him if the duel is in contention. That's my assumption. Which it won't be. Probably. um
00:51:37
Speaker
Yeah. 285 is going to be fun. I'd keep an eye out on the Navy kid. I would continue to do so. I don't know what to say about Tegadali. I think Michigan is having a tough time with their transfers.
00:51:49
Speaker
stuff they're i mean Honestly, their team overall is not as good as I thought they just everyone, though. Everyone is struggling. Everyone's transfers are struggling. Literally everyone's.

Transfers' Performance at CKLV

00:52:04
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. think I think you're right. I mean, Eli Griffin transferred for Ryder. He make the made the CKLV finals. Where did he transfer from? Cal Baptist.
00:52:17
Speaker
right. You can put that in a different tier of transfer. and we'll put that We'll put that in the tick tick win for the transfers. I mean, yeah. Yeah. Transferring. Put that with the Christian Carroll transfer.
00:52:29
Speaker
Oh, yeah. Christian Carroll. Also a good transfer. There's a couple. But yeah, overall transfers are not hot right now.
00:52:40
Speaker
All right. Any other thoughts on the CKLV?
00:52:44
Speaker
I just didn't think so. What was guys' favorite final?
00:52:51
Speaker
I only watched 49. I knew you were going to say 49. You freaking. You're like a homer, but like not really. What are you?
00:53:01
Speaker
I just love good wrestling. just love watching good wrestling. Especially they wear red singlet with a big white C on it. He loves wrestling. Loves wrestling.
00:53:13
Speaker
Could be any letter on that big red singlet. Could be a C, could be an I, could be a U. Just not an N. Sorry, Cornhuskers.
00:53:24
Speaker
Not this year. really good Unless your name is Brock Hardy, then I will i will root for you. Really got to apologize to Zach Hensley then. He's not going to like that. He'll be all right.
00:53:35
Speaker
he'll he we We'll get along. Let's move on to some duels that I'm looking forward to.
00:53:42
Speaker
Specifically, happening when is this duel? I just saw the date, and now it's gone. Ohio State, NC State. It's going down tomorrow.
00:53:54
Speaker
It's at Ohio State, I think. I don't even know. Whatever. It doesn't matter. The matches are happening. There's, I think, eight ranked. Is Fish back in a wrestle?
00:54:07
Speaker
Yeah. Who else would wrestle? I don't know. I'm just saying. No, Fishback will wrestle. Sometimes guys don't wrestle the schools they transferred from. happens.
00:54:18
Speaker
like Whatever. Wyatt didn't wrestle Air Force last year.
00:54:23
Speaker
Yeah. Richie wrestled Arizona State this year. All right. Touche. Sometimes it does. Sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes you do. Sometimes you don't. All right. 125. 125.
00:54:33
Speaker
one twenty five I'm hearing that we're probably going to see Brendan McCrone. No, that's not what the people want. No, but here's the deal.
00:54:48
Speaker
If Brendan McCrone loses, it's pretty much like Nick. Here's the spot. Don't mess it up. You know, right? But he will. He'll find a way.
00:54:59
Speaker
No. i Dude, i think bozacc i think what... He loves to mess things. I think what Ohio State has at 125 right now is Nick Bousakis. Backside boozy, baby. Let's go. No, not even that.
00:55:11
Speaker
Not even that. It's frontside foozy this year. Get out of here. ah He's good. i think he's found what he needs at 125, and I want to see more of it.
00:55:26
Speaker
So that's what I'm going to... ah that's what I'm going campaign for. Why would we not see Buzakis?
00:55:38
Speaker
Your laundry's done. Thank you. Your laundry's done. Thank you. I don't know. I don't know. I mean, i i see Vince winning this match probably either way. Probably either way. by their way theyre most they're best chance at winning the match is who? Sammy?
00:55:55
Speaker
Say say his name. You say his name. Nick Bousakis. That's right. That's right. 133. So tell your people Ben DeVino. To be quiet.
00:56:10
Speaker
Oh, well I think it's hang on. Not my people. I think Justin Bash reported this. Oh, okay. My bad. So apologies. Not, not my guy. Uh, anyway, 133 Ben DeVino,
00:56:25
Speaker
against, I think it's going to be Troy Holman. I think Troy Holman has earned the spot at this point, which is kind of ah surprise considering that they had Zach Redding. But yeah. Wait. No.
00:56:37
Speaker
Right? Is Redding not writing at 41? Is Redding at UNC? No. He's at NC State. He's at NC State. Is he at 33 or 41? No, 41 is Ryan Jack. that's right. So he is at 33.
00:56:50
Speaker
Yeah, Redding. Yeah, and he's just worse. Who'd Redding get beat by? He'd get beat by Ronnie Ramirez, right? Yeah, I don't think that's a bad loss. It's not bad, but it's also not what what you want to see.
00:57:04
Speaker
okay I think he's taken other losses too, if I had to guess. Is Ronnie Ramirez going to be the guy? Yes, 100%. If they're going to put out their best lineup this year, then Ronnie Ramirez will start here and that. But what if Jax Forrest enrolls?
00:57:20
Speaker
than who Then what do you do? ah You know what? Do you still go around? I will repeat. I will repeat this question for you. If people are talking about Jack's forests and him wrestling, why aren't they talking about Bo Bassett?
00:57:36
Speaker
I don't know. Bo Bassett probably is like made up his mind. He wants to do a senior year with his brothers. Yeah, but don't you think he would have a. or The only reason people are talking about Jack's is because he's actually he actually is moving to still water.
00:57:52
Speaker
Sure. But doesn't it make more sense if we're just talking about high schoolers enrolling in second semester and their likelihood of winning a national title? It makes more sense for Bo Bassett to do it than it does for Jack's forest.
00:58:06
Speaker
Yeah. Hmm. More sense. think it's an inarguable point. Yes. More sense. Like how much more sense, more sense. Like he is a title contender with one real person in his way.
00:58:21
Speaker
You don't think if him and Jackson Joy wrestled again, it would be a different match? Maybe. if bo Maybe. If Jackson could get on top? i like like On paper, there's one person in his way, but I also would i would have...
00:58:37
Speaker
reservations about him wrestling a guy like kyler larkin and re and a rematch against jackson joy uh and some of those guys who are more technical uh but i think he has less in the way than jackson joy does now it's not going to really do anything significant for virginia tech i mean jacks forest you said yeah joy okay i do that that happens but yes anyway Back to NC State, Ohio State. Ben Dovino probably... major.
00:59:08
Speaker
Smashing Troy Holman. By major. Yeah, major. Major maybe tech. Jesse Mendes, Ryan Jack. Jesse Mendes normally has issues with Ryan Jack. Not significant problems. Hasn't he pinned him in the past?
00:59:23
Speaker
He has, but he has also only won 5-2 in the past. Which do you think is more recent? The five to two. No, the pin. By 18 days.
00:59:36
Speaker
ah babo but but bum but but Oh, yeah, that's right. That's right. NC State, Ohio State wrestled at the journeyman duels, and it was like back-to-back-to-back-to-back pins for Ohio State. It was McCrone, then Buzakis, then Mendez all got pins. Yeah, yeah, that's right.
00:59:54
Speaker
And Mendez pinned Ryan Jack with six seconds left in the match. Crazy. ah Buzakis, Buzakis, headlocked, what's his name? Kyle Rini.
01:00:08
Speaker
I'd love that for him. It was a sick, I thought. 149. 149. Styles. Styles, Biscons. Ooh, give me. your crack Give me Styles. Dude, Biscons might not wrestle.
01:00:21
Speaker
Biscons might not wrestle. Zepeda is also listed. We haven't seen Zepeda wrestle at all this year. And Biscons not wrestling would be a clear sign. Well, not a clear sign. because Maybe he's injured. Maybe he's sick.
01:00:32
Speaker
ah But he's undefeated so far this year with some solid wins under his belt. If he stays undefeated... What? No, no, no. Biscons.
01:00:43
Speaker
He's undefeated? Biscons is undefeated. If he makes it to NCAA's undefeated ACC champ... He's in a very good spot. ah He's probably the three seed, maybe even the two seed.
01:01:00
Speaker
So, because everybody's taken losses at this weight, except for him, Joy, Van Ness. Joy's loss to Bassett doesn't count?
01:01:12
Speaker
No, not for RPI and all that.
01:01:17
Speaker
Bo's win over. Okay. But what if, so what if Bo enters second semester, then would it count? Dude, that's a great question. It's like coming off a red You're not attached to a team. Hmm. But it's like coming off a red shirt. All your wins and losses automatically count.
01:01:34
Speaker
Yeah. i don't know.
01:01:38
Speaker
I don't know. I don't have the rule book for that one. Reese. I have no idea. Fascinating. Jamie?
01:01:52
Speaker
He doesn't talk. um Yeah. Styles probably wins this, but if Zepeda goes out there and wrestles, that's gonna be interesting too.
01:02:02
Speaker
The Zepeda match makes it much more intriguing to me. Me too. I almost agree almost am tempted to pick Zepeda. Yeah. He hasn't wrestled yet in college. Yeah. That's why his match against Styles right away would be perfect.
01:02:20
Speaker
Yes, like i agree. It's like Cade Brock versus Cody Brewer almost, but not quite as cool. Not quite as cool, but same energy. 157, Brandon Cannon versus Jackson Arrington. Arrington not having the same type of year that I was expecting him to have. This could be the start for him.
01:02:40
Speaker
Could be the start. I'm still going to lean Brandon Cannon. The kid has been dynamo this year. I'm going Arrington.
01:02:54
Speaker
That's a terrible pick. Nope, I'm doing it. I believe in you, Jackson. Do you know what his record is this year?
01:03:02
Speaker
It's 0-0 going into this duel. That's what I know. He's five and two with losses to Rob Doe and Nininger. All right, the Ninja loss stings a little bit.
01:03:15
Speaker
The kid's is also not bad. It's not bad. Dude, we talked about this earlier. Virginia Tech's got a group. They're going to have some depth. to be good for them.
01:03:25
Speaker
ah I'm rolling with Cannon. 165, Patty Gallagher versus Will Denny. Interesting to me. Yeah, because you never know what what version of Patty you're going to get.
01:03:39
Speaker
Yeah, and Denny's tough, but I'm going to say it. Stop that. Sorry. ah patty Patty wins this. I think Patty wins Bad decision.
01:03:51
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, like, maybe not even a takedown. Maybe, like, a ride-out situation. Like, nothing fun.
01:03:59
Speaker
It's going to leave a bad taste in the mouth, and then we're going wash it out with 174 when we get Carson Hartzler versus Matt Singleton. yeah me Give me Maddie. gi me maddie Yeah. no no Singleton. Give me Karcha.
01:04:13
Speaker
Give me Karcha. This is his year, dude. is This is his last year. This is his li his year. He's doing it. ah That's what I think, too. He's going to sneak in. If he's on the opposite side of Haynes, he's sneaking into the finals.
01:04:28
Speaker
you Reese, you have Carson Hartzell winning the the dang tournament, don't you? I haven't taken a second. To Haynes? Yeah. Yeah. If he's on the opposite side of Haynes, Coward, he'll make.
01:04:45
Speaker
Why? Why is that a coward's pick? Coward. Leave me alone. Shut up. ah Because if you're going to if you're going have Carson Hart, you know, do anything impressive, just have him go all the way.
01:05:00
Speaker
or have him lose to Simon Ruiz in the finals. It's also an option, you know, what see. There he goes again. There he goes again. Or if for some reason, Derek Giltred just decides, you know what? March, March is my month.
01:05:15
Speaker
And there he is. we're not even talking about Carson Hartswell anymore. We're just talking.
01:05:22
Speaker
Talking miracles. Talking about my, my dang Hoosiers. Uh, what would you rather have? Sammy, what would you rather have a football national championship or one national champion wrestler this year? Ooh.
01:05:38
Speaker
ah And all right. I'll let you pick what weight.
01:05:45
Speaker
Hmm.
01:05:49
Speaker
There's a couple of weights. There's a couple of weights to pick there. i would love it for Jacob Moran at one 25.
01:05:56
Speaker
ah And who else would I want to see it for?
01:06:01
Speaker
Tyler Lillard would be cool.
01:06:05
Speaker
Okay, but be realistic. What do you mean? what does What do you mean? He's not beating Messenbrink. No, but Messenbrink is human.
01:06:16
Speaker
But I'm only human. Humans are susceptible to injury. Whoa, Sammy. But, I mean... ah Yeah, I mean, I think I'd rather me being the psychotic wrestling fan that I am. I think I would have rather have Indiana with the national champion.
01:06:33
Speaker
I think I would have that. Yeah. And then I can rub it in every Purdue fan's face. Reese, what do you want? What do I want for what? Would you rather Indiana win a football championship this year or one national champion?
01:06:47
Speaker
He does not care about Indiana's football team. I know that. And if you pick the wrestling, what weight would you pick? Sammy, I'm sorry. I'd probably pick Indiana football. I knew it.
01:07:00
Speaker
Okay. That's fine. He's becoming What did he say? Text. Text. Text. Texas Tech. This dude is becoming a college football fanatic. he Yeah, he is a It was when they expanded. was when they made the 12 teams because that just made it so much more interesting. I'm going to start calling you Hey Arnold, football head.
01:07:24
Speaker
Nice. i like Nice callback. Yeah. yeah You guys are missing out.
01:07:32
Speaker
I don't dude. don't even have to be there. I just don't follow it as closely as you do. I guess I follow the NFL little bit closer than do the college football. You don't listen to the boys, you don't listen to bussing with the boys. I don't have time for any podcast. So I have not watched do whatever you're doing and put the podcast on.
01:07:50
Speaker
I have not watched a moment of NFL this year. Uh, or no, I, at the beginning of the season I did, but then like probably after a week three, I stopped. i have a fun stat to give you guys. fun about fact about I'm talking about the CFB. I know, I know, I know. Yeah. But then CFB fuck about your NFL. All right. He's talking about the real NFL. We're trying to be family friendly here. Yeah. My bad. So French, will you bleep that out? Please? Yeah.
01:08:20
Speaker
i You bleep it out, buddy. ah Man, we were talking about NC State, Ohio State. let's i I'm cutting us off. Back to wrestling.
01:08:32
Speaker
Yeah, it is getting late. Reese has reese says' an early morning. Oh, forgot about that. 184 and 197 are uninteresting. NC State has holes in their lineup at those two weights. I'm sorry, Donald, case in case in how all you guys are going to have a bad time against Dylan Fishback and Seth's shoe made. Donald, anddoor luke g don Cates over Fishback.
01:08:52
Speaker
Dude, don Cates goes out there and beats Dylan Fishback. You'll know why you'll know why he left. I will. ah Yeah. And I'll, and I'll owe Don Cates something. I don't know what, but I'll owe him something. Send him a t-shirt. 285. Nick Feldman, Isaac Trumbull. Any t-shirt. It doesn't have to be one of ours. can be any t-shirt.
01:09:09
Speaker
have a suitcase of Kansas t-shirts. You can have any of them. Yeah. Yes. Joe's get pawned off on you.
01:09:18
Speaker
They did. ah Feldman Trumbull. What do we do here?
01:09:24
Speaker
you go Feldman because Trumbull's not going to wrestle. But if he does, like we'rere we're speaking in the hypothetical here. Then you still go Feldman because Trumbull's not healthy.
01:09:37
Speaker
Okay. You sent out a unhealthy Trumbull against a big, strong, manly Feldman. Feldman. Feldman.
01:09:48
Speaker
Yeah, i like Nick Feldman for this. Cool. That is that duel. Next one that I want to talk about these, the rest of these are going to go pretty quickly. Penn state, Wyoming. There are like three matchups in here that I want to talk about. Volk little doll. Number but one.
01:10:06
Speaker
No, you're dumb for saying that you're a stupid idiot. wow What you just said. Why? So try again. Who then? Cause Jory Volk wrestles for me. Oh, that's right. i forgot he left, dude. I forgot he left.
01:10:18
Speaker
I forgot he almost lost to Ezekiel Witt last weekend. I forgot he left. My bad. No, the three matches I want to talk about are basically 84, 97, 285. Rocco versus Eddie Nietenbach.
01:10:30
Speaker
I, if I want to consider Rocco Welsh to be a true tier one guy, need to how you pronounce it?
01:10:37
Speaker
That's how I say it. think that I need to see. It could be. Yeah. Whatever you want to say. I need to see Rocco Welsh with more proficient or more frequent offense.
01:10:48
Speaker
Something to that effect. I need that from him to be able to say Rocco Welsh is a tier one guy at 184. And he can show that against Eddie, who's tough.
01:11:01
Speaker
Okay. I agree. 197. 100%. Conor Mirosola... economy or sola The current conversation is that he is he and Josh Barr are going to end up ultimately needing a wrestle-off to determine who's going to have the spot.
01:11:17
Speaker
Joey Novak could throw a wrench into that if he manages to beat Conor Mirasola. This will be a great test for him. Novak is a top five-ish guy at 197 right now.
01:11:28
Speaker
How does he do? One-time All-American or two? Just one. Only one, i think. Was he around at 12? when you Or junior? Going to look it up.
01:11:41
Speaker
lock it up He should have picked a neutral against AJ Ferrari last year. he would have beat him. Round of 16 as a freshman and then fifth last year. And yeah, he could have he could have put himself into that that very, very short list of people who's beaten AJ Ferrari.
01:11:58
Speaker
Why would he pick? Okay, and then, i don't know. 285, Cole Mirasola, Christian Carroll, just two guys who are A little proven.
01:12:10
Speaker
Prove yourselves some more. Show me what you got. Show me what you got. Show me. So those those those are what i want to see that at that duel. ah Penn State is going to. Oh.
01:12:22
Speaker
Penn State is going to dominate. But did you guys hear that Nate Desmond might be going up to 141? He's too big for 25. He might be going up to 41. I'm sorry.
01:12:34
Speaker
Who jumps two weights in a season? In the midst of a season? Oh, boy. No. Nope. Not proficiently. Not effectively. What are you saying? What are you alleging? I'm saying... Meyer Shapiro? I'm saying... What are you alleging, Meyer Shapiro?
01:12:52
Speaker
I'm saying that if Penn State manages to get a 25-pounder up to 141 in the span of of the midst of a season...
01:13:03
Speaker
that you take that fact, you take the fact that they've been able to to beef up other guys to get Haynes from 57 to 74 like it was nothing, to get Tyler Kasach up from 41 to 49 to 57, to get Josh Bar up to be a true 97-pounder by eating half a freaking cow over the summer, you start to ask some questions.
01:13:22
Speaker
Say it. Say it, Sammy. Say it, Sammy. Well, what's going on with Aaron Brooks? That's what I'll say. What's going on with Aaron Brooks? Answer me that.
01:13:33
Speaker
Next duel. Sammy's right. Do we have any— Oh, Oklahoma State, West Virginia. Ooh. Juicy. Robynette Waters?
01:13:45
Speaker
Spratly Strickenberger.
01:13:48
Speaker
can Can Spratly get over the Strickenberger hump? Maybe. Better question. not Will we see Ronnie Ramirez? Better question. if No, we'll get that right. right if We'll get there. Bradley wins. What kind of celebration is he going to hit?

Titus and Vega's Capabilities

01:14:05
Speaker
o
01:14:08
Speaker
Bazooka. doesn't. He doesn't. Yeah, i was going to say he doesn't leave it to a handgun. He he pulls out

Preview of Wrestling Matchups

01:14:13
Speaker
the big guns. ah Jordan Titus, Sergio Vega. I'm a little intrigued. Titus kind of sometimes problematic for people. stay at home Show me what you got.
01:14:26
Speaker
uh william mcdougall casey swiderski just because i need to see more data on casey i still don't know what to think of him yet he'll be by caleb tybus caleb atias and then the marquee matchup of the duel is going to be ty waters versus landon robito yeah This could be a chance for Landon to put himself as number one at the weight.
01:14:55
Speaker
Does he

Strategies to Defeat PJ Duke

01:14:56
Speaker
do it?
01:14:59
Speaker
He'll also have interesting matchups like Alex Lucundo versus Brody Conley and Zack Ryder. could win the tournament if someone else can take out PJ Duke for him. Because I just don't think he'll be able to beat PJ Duke.
01:15:11
Speaker
His style does not work against PJ Duke at all. You need somebody who is slicker and uses more finesse to how they navigate positions.
01:15:23
Speaker
Robito is a little bit more like PJ where he's brutish with the way he wrestles. So going to need a Brandon Cannon, a Ty Waters, a Meyer Shapiro to take out a guy like PJ Duke and then fall to a guy like Robito.
01:15:38
Speaker
But my thought is, is if you're beating PJ Duke, you're probably beating Landon as well, but I could be wrong. Could be wrong.

West Virginia Wrestlers' Weekend

01:15:45
Speaker
ah But yeah, 74, 84, 97 are all interesting. I think one of those West Virginia kids is injured.
01:15:52
Speaker
I can't remember which one, though. So. Don't know. All righty. um Yeah, that's pretty much.
01:16:05
Speaker
That's pretty much it. Reese wants to go to bed. He needs it. There's other duels. There's a lot. There's

Closing Remarks and Personal Needs

01:16:12
Speaker
a lot of duels this weekend. Yeah.
01:16:15
Speaker
A lot of duels this weekend. All right. But that's pretty much it Well, thank you everybody for listening. have to use the bathroom. Brian has to use a bathroom. Reese has to go to bed. And i have to go do some editing now. So have a good one. Sorry about that.
01:16:30
Speaker
Goodbye.
