Cokeley Brothers: Welcome back, everybody, to the barn session. We're back. We've got some wrestling to talk about.
Ryne: Like we never left.
Cokeley Brothers: And I think BK is bk is ready. so ah
Reese: There wasn't even that much wrestling.
Cokeley Brothers: No, but the wrestling that went down was pretty exciting to me, at least. um And I want to talk about I want to start off with what happened most recently, the Cyhawk duel.
Cokeley Brothers: Tell me your thoughts.
Reese: You knew it was going to happen eventually.
Ryne: I thought the clowns the clowns looked the clones looked really good, and the Hawkeyes did not look so good.
Reese: Sackhones looked real nice. Real nice.
Cokeley Brothers: I feel like... I think...
Reese: Attacking. MJ Guyton looked really good, bro. but how did He looked like he's jumped levels.
Cokeley Brothers: Really?
Reese: He buckled down in that match.
Cokeley Brothers: Yeah, but...
Reese: I've just never seen his defense that good.
Ryne: i think it was i think it was just a little bit of a Cyclone magic.
Reese: What do you mean? He looked good, dude.
Cokeley Brothers: i There were... I think we can get into some of the wait-by-wait stuff, but like, the overall dual experience, it felt like you saw lots of little things happen that we're going to be the reason ultimately why Iowa one, you see Ben Keeter get out of, uh, get, get an escape and, and keep it to a decision in the last moment. Uh, Steve O'Pool and have Dean Peterson dead to rights and Peterson finds a way to win that match.
Cokeley Brothers: Um, that Kyle and over erases the bonus point wins by getting a tech fall of his own. Um, Yeah, I mean, it felt like somehow iowa's Iowa was going to win it in typical Iowa fashion, ah but Iowa State found a way to to shut the door.
Ryne: Iowa State just, they kept, they kept, a you know, they won some key matches that they weren't supposed to win. You know what I mean?
Cokeley Brothers: Right, and I think their good guys looked really good. And, huh?
Reese: Except for one.
Cokeley Brothers: Except for one.
Reese: Are you talking about Iowa?
Ryne: Yeah.
Cokeley Brothers: Iowa State.
Reese: Iowa State. Yeah, yeah. Except for one.
Cokeley Brothers: Which one didn't look good?

Cokeley Brothers: Oh, I don't think Panera's not going to be their starter.
Reese: I'm saying you said they're good guys and he's the number two guy. He was the number two guy during that match. And why wouldn't he be their starter?
Cokeley Brothers: Yeah.
Reese: If he wasn't their starter, why would they wrestle him?
Cokeley Brothers: he lost a he lost a he lost to Frost and both Marissa lost, but Frost was sick.
Ryne: Frost beat him and some wrestle-offs. And then I guess...
Reese: why wouldn't they wrestle him?
Cokeley Brothers: He's sick.

Cokeley Brothers: That's what was told.

Cokeley Brothers: Yeah.
Ryne: He said he didn't wrestle due to illness.
Cokeley Brothers: Said that his brother had it earlier and then he gave it to him and here we are. And I think definitely after that match, you want to say Frost gives ah frost gives a better look than that.
Cokeley Brothers: we we can Let's start getting into the into the the actual matches.
Reese: Oh, yeah.
Cokeley Brothers: Let's start at 285.
Cokeley Brothers: Ben Keeter, I'm a little worried about. and he's probably going to be fine.
Ryne: He's little banged up.
Cokeley Brothers: I think he's... Yeah. And I think he's still going to find a way to finish on the podium. But Yonger Bastida looks like a title contender.
Ryne: ah Yeah, of course.
Cokeley Brothers: I mean...
Ryne: looks He looked like won a couple years ago, too.
Cokeley Brothers: Like, really good.
Cokeley Brothers: yeah Yeah. Yeah. I mean... Right.
Ryne: So he's I mean, we know he's good.

Ryne: He's been he was my preseason pick to win it. and I'm sticking with it.
Cokeley Brothers: You should. I mean, i don't think anybody's looked... as good as him. Now it does make me wonder like his offense was, was very crisp.
Ryne: He did almost lose to Braxton Amos.
Cokeley Brothers: He almost lost a Braxton Amos, but in, in that match against Keeter, his offense looked crisp. He moved, moves better than pretty much any other heavyweight in the field right now. Uh, but he had that close match with Braxton Amos. So that makes me wonder how good is Braxton Amos.
Cokeley Brothers: It's a, it's a good question to me.
Ryne: He definitely put the size on, I'll say that.
Cokeley Brothers: Right.
Ryne: He's a big boy now.
Cokeley Brothers: But I think, I mean, yeah, Keter's hurt and it's obvious that people were ready for like, like a step up from Ben Keter. And I just didn't really know how that was going to happen whenever he's getting through hip surgery and he's still got time.
Reese: Thank
Cokeley Brothers: It's not March yet. So he's can, he can still find a way to feel even better, but that's generally not how people trend throughout the season.
Ryne: Mm-hmm.
Cokeley Brothers: Oh, but yeah, it, Younger got three takedowns, even though he gave up the escape at the very end to to lose the major. Just set the tone for the duel.
Cokeley Brothers: And yeah, he looks good. i I put him up there with Feldman and Ferrari. And I mean, I guess maybe Trumbull if he ends up being a name eventually.
Cokeley Brothers: But I guess maybe Amos. Who knows?
Cokeley Brothers: All right, 125.
Ryne: Ohio is Ohio State at the CKLV No It's down this year That

Reese: For now, are they still going
Cokeley Brothers: Cornell still goes. So to me, Virginia Tech, Iowa State, um just Northern Illinois, Oregon State, West Virginia, Princeton, Cornell, um Stanford.
Reese: going?
Ryne: It's still a good field.
Cokeley Brothers: Still a good, still the best regular season tournament.
Reese: No Michigan's?
Cokeley Brothers: Cal Poly will be there. Michigan. that doesn't no Michigan to be there. has Has Ragason not wrestled yet this year? don't think he has.
Cokeley Brothers: Anyway, back to the Cyhawk. 125. There's not...
Reese: I didn't see that much.
Cokeley Brothers: I mean... So, Steve O'Poulin was kind of putting...
Ryne: What?
Cokeley Brothers: kind of pressing the issue of ah creating an exchange. But nothing nothing really super committed until towards the very end of the match, Steve O'Pooling gets in on a a shot that he's he's got Dean Peterson dead to rights.
Cokeley Brothers: And for the second match against, I think it's an All-American from last year, Dean Peterson finds a way to snatch victory from the Jaws of Defeat. And I think that's sort of a testimony or a testament to...
Cokeley Brothers: what kind of wrestling we should expect from Dean Peterson this year. I think that's a good sign for the Hawks.
Reese: What do you mean? Like, so like counters? Yeah.
Cokeley Brothers: Yeah. So, uh, Poulin was, had Peterson on a head inside shot is what Poulin took. And then he had him knocked off to his hip, bottom leg hooked and popped his head out.
Cokeley Brothers: And somehow Peterson and who held onto the far ankle and like rolled him through to get his hips up on top and
Ryne: Mm-hmm.
Cokeley Brothers: And then, you know, he's in a, he's in a leg hook cross face situation. Very, I didn't, I really did not understand how Peterson was able to pull it off in that position, but I rewatched it ah earlier today and I was like, yeah, that's, that's pretty miraculous stuff. Now, if you're an Iowa fan, you probably want to see more fundamental standard, get a shot, get a takedown from Dean Peterson, but he's showing He's fighting. He's not going quit in every single position.
Cokeley Brothers: That means something, especially in a dual situation.
Reese: he's ah He's actually ah ts a transfer that's actually showing heart.
Cokeley Brothers: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Ryne: Are you saying there are other transfers who are not showing hard race?
Cokeley Brothers: I mean.

Ryne: Right after we just have right after we discussed my least favorite match of this whole duel.
Cokeley Brothers: Let's handle one...
Cokeley Brothers: Yeah. very Very interesting match at 133 here. Trey Caiala, it felt like he was in control of this match. He felt like the more dangerous wrestler in most of the positions for the first two periods of the match.
Cokeley Brothers: And then i don't know what changed. or It might have even been before the end of the second period, but Frost... Something I was worried about with him was the weight cut and his, you know, the first time being down at one 33, how was he going to look?
Cokeley Brothers: And he looked good. He looked healthy.
Ryne: looks fantastic.
Cokeley Brothers: He looked ready. he wrestled the whole match. He got to his shots. He scored. Um, yeah, it was interesting to see Ayala kind of falter towards the end of that match.
Ryne: It's in a slump.
Cokeley Brothers: That's what happens.
Reese: So you think, like, Drake, I don't know, like, you don't think Evan just kind of I don't know.
Cokeley Brothers: So,
Reese: I don't know how to say it. I feel like you don't think Evan stepped up in that third period?
Cokeley Brothers: what do you mean i stepped up?
Reese: Just stepped up his game that third period, ramped it up, started front attacking him.
Cokeley Brothers: Yeah. Yeah. I, I guess maybe i'm I'm wondering like what got him so like what got him so comfortable, um, taking those shots because it really felt like with the way I was wrestling anytime Frost took an effort towards taking a shot, making it, making a, taking a risk.
Cokeley Brothers: Um, Ayala was ready to put him in an uncomfortable and a dangerous position. And Frost just pulled the trigger anyway in the third period and it paid off. So, yeah.
Cokeley Brothers: And that that was, I mean, that's a huge match. Obviously, every single match in this duel had big time implications for the result of the duel.
Cokeley Brothers: But that was probably a ah ah major dagger for the Hawkeye faithful.
Ryne: Yes.
Cokeley Brothers: Yeah. so a alwaysas got i mean So the Iowa schedule is they have...
Reese: i I think that's a match. Sorry, i think I think that's a match that will be all it'll be ah a coin flip eternally.
Cokeley Brothers: Yeah, probably.

Cokeley Brothers: And it was interesting because he was describing their style as what Iowa Hawkeye wrestling is. And that is not how Ben Askren wrestles at all.

Cokeley Brothers: So it was very interesting to hear that.

Cokeley Brothers: Kel Peterson, probably a better option. They have options. um But yeah, I mean, it looks tough for him at 41. um Because, like, Echemendia didn't seem to have any issue just powering through whatever position he was in.
Cokeley Brothers: But, yeah, again, in Nasir Bailey's defense, he's lost to three of the top four. And um that's a tough set.
Cokeley Brothers: And he honestly, he had.
Ryne: OT, pin, and major.
Cokeley Brothers: He didn't get me got tech, I think, by Mendez.

Cokeley Brothers: It made total sense that it went to tiebreakers.

Cokeley Brothers: With that being said, i understand Block's position within his season, within the year. He's getting wins under his belt, gaining that confidence, getting traction.
Cokeley Brothers: Does it look better by March?
Ryne: I think so. I think he's only getting better.

Ryne: He's much better at 49 than he is at 41. That's for sure.

Cokeley Brothers: You know, if people want to beat him, they got to take clean, fundamental, quick shots straight to the finish. The top at 157 are able to do that. So, I mean, he's probably going to be an All-American again this year. I don't see him being any more than that, though.
Ryne: You don't you don't think he could go on a run?

Ryne: He seems like the kind of guy who could go on a run make the finals this senior year

Cokeley Brothers: But, okay, do you guys consider him as as somebody who Penn State could ultimately end up starting at the end of the year?
