Introduction to Self-Improvement Podcast
00:00:03
Speaker
It's your favorite 10 to 15 minute podcast presented by me, Alex Hooper, becoming the best version of myself with every single episode that I release.
00:00:18
Speaker
Are you doing the same?
Reflecting on Educational Experiences
00:00:21
Speaker
Now, a couple of weeks ago,
00:00:23
Speaker
I talked to you about my high school experience where I went to phone school.
00:00:29
Speaker
I got expelled from college.
00:00:31
Speaker
All these wonderful things.
00:00:32
Speaker
Well, last week, I was at home in Baltimore.
00:00:38
Speaker
I was where I grew up in Baltimore.
00:00:41
Speaker
I spoke to the senior acting class at my high school.
00:00:46
Speaker
I went to a magnet school, so I was there to act.
00:00:50
Speaker
And I spoke to the seniors who had not been born when I graduated.
00:00:56
Speaker
I'm the class of 2003.
00:00:57
Speaker
These students were not even zygotes yet.
00:01:02
Speaker
They were little tiny sperm just swimming around, a glottal of whatever.
Sharing Advice with Students
00:01:10
Speaker
And I went and spoke to them and I told them all about basically what I wish I had been told at that age.
00:01:20
Speaker
And now look, I wouldn't have listened.
00:01:22
Speaker
I was a rebellious little devil, but I still spoke to them.
00:01:30
Speaker
And what I realized in speaking to them is I was really talking to myself.
00:01:33
Speaker
I was giving myself advice for now that I wish I had been told at that time.
00:01:39
Speaker
And I think a lot of it really resonated with them.
00:01:42
Speaker
In fact, one of the students, when I left, the teacher emailed me and said, one of the students said, I have so much more confidence now than I did before, which is great.
00:01:51
Speaker
That's the Aletupar promise.
00:01:53
Speaker
I will come into a room and people go, oh, that guy is leading a successful life as an artist.
00:02:00
Speaker
Then I can definitely leave.
00:02:03
Speaker
And so here are the eight things that I really tried to instill in them that I'm also trying to instill in myself.
Maintaining Creative Pursuits
00:02:16
Speaker
Once you find something that lights you up inside, keep finding ways to brighten it.
00:02:22
Speaker
The more you create a genuine person inside of yourself, the more your soul will illuminate and that will shine brightly on everyone around you.
00:02:33
Speaker
You have to find a way to keep the fire burning inside of you.
00:02:38
Speaker
And sometimes that means just keeping your artistic self separate from your work self.
00:02:46
Speaker
Sometimes you're going to get hired to do things that it doesn't light you up.
00:02:51
Speaker
It's a paycheck, but always have some project going that does keep you creatively fueled.
00:03:00
Speaker
Focus on adaptability.
00:03:02
Speaker
You're never stuck being one thing.
00:03:04
Speaker
A huge part of being an artist is adapting to the times.
00:03:10
Speaker
If there's a new piece of technology, find a way to use it on your own terms.
00:03:17
Speaker
You're never stuck.
00:03:19
Speaker
Even if it's working for you, you can change up what you're doing at any time.
00:03:23
Speaker
Follow your instincts.
00:03:25
Speaker
And if you see something that's working for everyone else, it doesn't mean you need to do the same thing.
00:03:33
Speaker
Because what works for others might not work for you.
00:03:36
Speaker
So I encourage you to find your own way.
Creating Opportunities and Embracing Rejection
00:03:41
Speaker
Number three, don't wait for anyone to give you an opportunity.
00:03:46
Speaker
Do your own things all the time.
00:03:48
Speaker
Whatever that is, keep writing, filming, acting, just creating, editing your own projects, start a YouTube channel if that's what you wanna do.
00:04:00
Speaker
And this goes for any career.
00:04:01
Speaker
Of course, I'm speaking mainly to entertainment, but you can do this for anything.
00:04:05
Speaker
Create your own shit.
00:04:07
Speaker
Build your own career the way you want it to be by making things that you love.
00:04:14
Speaker
Because when you do what you want to do, you will be successful.
00:04:18
Speaker
And that's when the money and the opportunities will present themselves from outside sources.
00:04:25
Speaker
Number four, super important.
00:04:28
Speaker
Embrace rejection.
00:04:31
Speaker
Learn to love the word no.
00:04:35
Speaker
Every time that you hear it, you are that much closer to a yes.
00:04:39
Speaker
And the more no's you have to hear leading up to that yes, the better it's going to feel when finally something breaks through.
00:04:51
Speaker
Rejection is a huge part of life.
00:04:54
Speaker
And becoming resilient is what is going to carry you forward every single day.
00:05:00
Speaker
Believe that it will happen.
00:05:02
Speaker
And just because one person tells you no,
00:05:04
Speaker
Somebody out there is waiting in the wings to tell you that you're worthwhile.
The Power of a Supportive Community
00:05:11
Speaker
Number five, surround yourself with brilliant people who inspire you to be better.
00:05:19
Speaker
One of my favorite things about living in Los Angeles is I have seen just amazing, incredible, intelligent, creative people do shit that makes me motivated, that fuels my own fire.
00:05:36
Speaker
I love the people that I work with and I get to see every day.
00:05:39
Speaker
I'm talking about people from the earliest level at open mics that are just trying to find their voice.
00:05:46
Speaker
And then all of a sudden, next thing I know, they're selling out
00:05:49
Speaker
stadiums and they are creating TV shows and giving other people opportunities.
00:05:56
Speaker
Speaking of other people getting opportunities, collaborate.
00:06:01
Speaker
A lot of entertainment is a solo sport, but it doesn't have to be.
00:06:06
Speaker
The more people you bring in and surround yourself with, the better your things will get.
00:06:11
Speaker
Some people are going to have ideas that you would never have.
00:06:13
Speaker
You need people to tell you how to make things better.
00:06:17
Speaker
You need people to tell you, no, this is important.
00:06:21
Speaker
And the more, sometimes there's too many voices, but bringing in another person can really take a project from here to here.
00:06:31
Speaker
And I think that's very important.
00:06:33
Speaker
So collaborate as often as you can.
00:06:36
Speaker
God, I wish I had learned that one earlier on.
00:06:38
Speaker
I did everything by myself and I still do too much by myself.
00:06:41
Speaker
That's why I have a solo podcast, idiot.
00:06:46
Speaker
Celebrate the successes of others.
00:06:49
Speaker
This goes with collaboration, right?
00:06:51
Speaker
This is number seven though.
00:06:52
Speaker
But celebrate others.
00:06:54
Speaker
Yes, you're going to be jealous when somebody gets something that you want or that you wish you had.
00:07:01
Speaker
Take that moment, be jealous, and then transmute that energy into a positive thought.
00:07:09
Speaker
Be happy for them in the same way that you would want them to be happy for you.
00:07:13
Speaker
And if it's happening to that, to people around you, then it's going to happen to you soon too.
00:07:20
Speaker
Proximity is everything.
00:07:22
Speaker
And remember this, you are closer than you've ever been.
The Importance of Self-Care
00:07:27
Speaker
With each new moment, you are manifesting your dreams.
00:07:32
Speaker
Number eight, the final one for this podcast.
00:07:36
Speaker
Take care of yourself.
00:07:40
Speaker
Self-care is so important.
00:07:43
Speaker
If you're feeling burned out, then take a break.
00:07:47
Speaker
Treat yourself well.
00:07:49
Speaker
Do not exhaust yourself.
00:07:51
Speaker
Don't think that constant struggle or being poor or eating shitty food has to be the way.
00:08:00
Speaker
If you want others to love you, it starts by loving yourself.
00:08:05
Speaker
External factors are only going to cause so much happiness.
00:08:09
Speaker
True joy is a choice that comes from within, that comes from you.
00:08:17
Speaker
And you need to remember that at all times.
00:08:21
Speaker
It starts with you.
Reflections on Life's Journey
00:08:25
Speaker
Speaking to those kids was awesome.
00:08:29
Speaker
And they were kids.
00:08:31
Speaker
17 years old to me is a kid.
00:08:33
Speaker
They don't know anything yet.
00:08:34
Speaker
They still think high school is going to be the best years of their life.
00:08:41
Speaker
It only gets better if you keep doing it right.
00:08:46
Speaker
I've always thought this.
00:08:48
Speaker
You think your high school years are the best it's ever going to be.
00:08:52
Speaker
Then you spend your 20s making mistakes.
00:08:55
Speaker
Because you're learning about the life that you want to live.
00:08:59
Speaker
Then in your 30s, you can really figure out what you want and start pointing yourself towards it.
00:09:05
Speaker
In your 40s, you are going to be killing it.
00:09:09
Speaker
Because you understand all of the failures that you have behind you.
00:09:13
Speaker
All of the things have culminated and acquiesced into where you want to be.
00:09:19
Speaker
And then in your 50s, you can live.
00:09:25
Speaker
You can truly enjoy yourself with the life that you've created.
00:09:30
Speaker
Your 60s are probably going to start going downhill.
00:09:32
Speaker
You're going to start having heart problems and your knees are going to hurt and you're not going to want to bend over anymore and your kids are going to be hitting you up for money.
00:09:38
Speaker
But if you do it right, it's going to keep getting better all the way through your 50s.
00:09:46
Speaker
Then I think your 60s might suck.
00:09:48
Speaker
And then your 70s, just accept that you're going to die soon and I think you're going to be a much happier person.
00:09:53
Speaker
That's what I'm waiting for.
00:09:56
Speaker
So keep this one around, you know, send this to other people that need to hear it.
00:10:03
Speaker
I, when I was writing about this the morning before I had to talk with these students, I was like, I thought I was writing to them.
00:10:10
Speaker
I thought I was coming up with all the talking points for them.
00:10:13
Speaker
A hundred percent.
00:10:15
Speaker
Because I need to tell myself these things too.
00:10:18
Speaker
And remind myself that it is a privilege to get to live this life even when it is difficult.
Podcast Evolution and Personal Growth
00:10:27
Speaker
I need to remember every single one of these points.
00:10:31
Speaker
All eight of them.
00:10:35
Speaker
Think about what you're going to do today to make yourself a little bit better.
00:10:39
Speaker
Because while you can have goals in the future...
00:10:42
Speaker
Don't put yourself five years away and think, if I do all these things, I can get here.
00:10:47
Speaker
Your only job is to be a little bit happier, smarter, and better than you were yesterday.
00:10:57
Speaker
Are you doing that?
00:11:02
Speaker
So keep it up, everybody.
00:11:05
Speaker
Now, Hollywood Improv, January 7th.
00:11:10
Speaker
I am headlining at the Hollywood Improv Lab.
00:11:13
Speaker
There are only 50 tickets left, so please go get those tickets.
00:11:17
Speaker
I am doing my full hour.
00:11:19
Speaker
The performance that I'm taping only a few days later, I'm doing it at the Hollywood Improv.
00:11:25
Speaker
It's my first time ever headlining there, and that's super cool.
00:11:29
Speaker
It's a big achievement for me, and I'm excited about it.
00:11:32
Speaker
So I really want to see you there.
00:11:33
Speaker
Go get the tickets.
00:11:36
Speaker

00:11:41
Speaker
I'm trying to build those numbers.
00:11:43
Speaker
I'm constantly releasing clips from this podcast, my own stand-up, some daily lollipops.
00:11:48
Speaker
You know how it goes.
00:11:52
Speaker
It is a happiness factory at HooperHairPuff.
00:11:56
Speaker
And share this podcast.
00:12:00
Speaker
Some episodes have done really well lately, and that's been exciting.
00:12:04
Speaker
And I'm making it, you know, I'm being consistent.
00:12:08
Speaker
I'm almost a year deep.
00:12:09
Speaker
I think this is like episode 49 or 50 or something like that.
00:12:15
Speaker
Do you feel so good?
00:12:18
Speaker
Because it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.
00:12:26
Speaker
Thanks for being here.
00:12:28
Speaker
See you next week.
