What I Learned From My Stroke

Dirty Briefs with Alex Hooper
Avatar
78 Plays2 years ago

On November 17th, 2022 I was taken to the hospital after suffering a long-term stroke. I wouldn't emerge for 33 days. Now, one year later, I can reflect on that time, healthier than ever.  My normal antics are muted for this one as I speak candidly about how I handled one of the most difficult periods of my adult life.

My special ,BRACE YOURSELF, is being filmed in Bridgeport, CT on January 12th. Tell your friends who live in the area.

Fred Again's Concert and Rise

00:00:01
Speaker
It's another week, which means it's another Dirty Brief.
00:00:08
Speaker
So last week I was at a concert seeing Fred again.
00:00:13
Speaker
If you're not familiar with Fred again, he came to Rise during the pandemic and talk about a meteoric explosion from an artist.
00:00:24
Speaker
He suddenly started putting out music and the next thing you knew, he's one of the biggest artists on the planet.
00:00:30
Speaker
He put out three albums in less than three years and
00:00:34
Speaker
And all of them blew up.
00:00:38
Speaker
He just kind of reinvented electronic music and made his own form of it.
00:00:43
Speaker
And it just spoke to a generation.
00:00:45
Speaker
And you can see it based on how much he has grown in popularity over the last couple of years.
00:00:53
Speaker
And...

Hospital Reflections and Coping Mechanisms

00:00:54
Speaker
I was at a concert and he started off, he plays videos during his songs, and he started off with this one song with this lyric that just keeps saying, we're going to make it through.
00:01:04
Speaker
We're going to make it through.
00:01:06
Speaker
We're going to make it through.
00:01:07
Speaker
And it put me back in this place where when I went in the hospital and I didn't realize I was having a stroke, I
00:01:19
Speaker
I kept repeating that phrase again and again for the first few days that I was in the hospital.
00:01:26
Speaker
I kept saying, we're going to make it through.
00:01:28
Speaker
We're going to make it through.
00:01:30
Speaker
And I was telling myself that.
00:01:33
Speaker
I was telling my friends and family that.
00:01:35
Speaker
I just kept repeating that phrase.
00:01:37
Speaker
And the reason why it spoke to me, because I was at this concert last week, is I realized that this Friday, November 17th, that's the day that I went in the hospital and didn't come out for 33 days.
00:01:52
Speaker
Over a month, starting November 17th.
00:01:55
Speaker
So now we are almost a year from that day.
00:02:01
Speaker
And holy shit, have I made it through.
00:02:04
Speaker
You know, those 33 days were some of the hardest I've ever endured in my adult life.
00:02:09
Speaker
They were just brutally painful.
00:02:12
Speaker
They were boring.
00:02:13
Speaker
They were terrifying.
00:02:16
Speaker
But one of the ways that I really got through that time is I kept telling myself, this is temporary.
00:02:22
Speaker
I will get through this.
00:02:24
Speaker
This is temporary.
00:02:26
Speaker
I will get through this.
00:02:28
Speaker
Fred Again's first albums were called Actual Life 1 and 2 and 3.
00:02:33
Speaker
Actual Life.
00:02:37
Speaker
And at that time, that was my actual life.
00:02:39
Speaker
But it was hard for me to wrap my head around that and truly accept it.
00:02:44
Speaker
While I knew it was my life, I kept telling myself that this is temporary.
00:02:49
Speaker
I will get through this.
00:02:50
Speaker
And I've used that phrase throughout many periods of my life.

Living in the Present

00:02:55
Speaker
When I thought I was microdosing but accidentally took three full tabs of acid, this is temporary.
00:03:01
Speaker
I will get through this.
00:03:02
Speaker
This is temporary.
00:03:03
Speaker
I will get through this because you can survive so many things if you think beyond the current moment.
00:03:12
Speaker
I'm a person who thinks it's very important to live in the present.
00:03:17
Speaker
And I really try my best to focus on the present because depression is the past and anxiety is the future.
00:03:26
Speaker
Where are my feet right now?
00:03:29
Speaker
Be in the present.
00:03:30
Speaker
But when I was in the hospital,
00:03:33
Speaker
I wasn't in the present.
00:03:35
Speaker
I kept thinking about how I was going to bounce back from all of that.
00:03:39
Speaker
And where I am now, I'm so proud of myself.
00:03:46
Speaker
for how I handled this entire experience.
00:03:49
Speaker
Because I was on my Slack line today and I did 80 minutes without falling off, which felt great.
00:03:57
Speaker
That's my general practice is like 60 minutes minimum without falling off, just putting on headphones, listening to music.
00:04:04
Speaker
I was listening to LCD Sound System because we just bought tickets to see them on New Year's.
00:04:08
Speaker
And LCD is one of my favorite bands on the planet.
00:04:11
Speaker
They've meant so much to me.
00:04:13
Speaker
And in their song, Home, there's a couple lines that really resonated with me today.
00:04:18
Speaker
One of them, this is a trick, forget a terrible year.

Overcoming Challenges with Music

00:04:23
Speaker
This is a trick, forget a terrible year.
00:04:29
Speaker
Well, that was my trick.
00:04:31
Speaker
Telling myself, this is temporary, I will get through this.
00:04:34
Speaker
Imagining the healthiest version of myself instead of this sick-laden person
00:04:42
Speaker
infirmed person laying in a hospital bed, 25 pounds swelled up from edema in constant pain, cancer riddled throughout my body, sepsis everywhere.
00:04:56
Speaker
This is temporary.
00:04:58
Speaker
I will get through this.
00:05:02
Speaker
This is a trick.
00:05:03
Speaker
Forget a terrible year.
00:05:06
Speaker
And then another lyric in that song is we can shut the door.
00:05:09
Speaker
Yeah, shut the door on terrible times.
00:05:13
Speaker
Because sometimes you have to, you have to leave that in the past.
00:05:17
Speaker
I can't go back to where I was in that state because I've done everything to get out of it.
00:05:24
Speaker
When I got out of the hospital and I had to do physical therapy, I did double the recommended amount to get myself through it so I could come back stronger than ever.
00:05:33
Speaker
I was worried about my brain and the quick-wittedness that I have come to rely on in stand-up comedy.
00:05:40
Speaker
And so I started doing cognitive exercises, simple word games, spelling bee and Wordle and just writing every single morning.
00:05:49
Speaker
I've written almost 300 pages of journaling this year.
00:05:55
Speaker
Almost 300 pages.
00:05:57
Speaker
Because every day when I wake up, that's the first thing that I do is I just start typing away my thoughts for the day.
00:06:03
Speaker
And a lot of it is positive affirmations, telling myself that things are going to get better because that is what I need.
00:06:09
Speaker
But a lot of it's just, what did I do yesterday?
00:06:12
Speaker
Think about a time in high school when you were unhappy and write about that.
00:06:17
Speaker
Whatever it may be, just using my brain to the best of its ability.

Recovery and Personal Growth

00:06:23
Speaker
I've learned that
00:06:25
Speaker
Patience is key because I couldn't rush this recovery.
00:06:30
Speaker
It wasn't going to happen as fast as I wanted to.
00:06:33
Speaker
And I knew that it was going to be a long, slow, arduous process.
00:06:39
Speaker
But I also knew that if I did the work, I would get back to where I could feel that
00:06:48
Speaker
like myself again, loving and silly and fun and just bursting at the seams with energy everywhere I go.
00:06:57
Speaker
I want to make myself and everyone around me feel like they are having a great experience, whatever we're doing.
00:07:06
Speaker
And it took a little while for me to get back to that.
00:07:10
Speaker
I had to give myself grace.
00:07:12
Speaker
And that was part of learning patience is being gracious with myself.
00:07:17
Speaker
is knowing that, yes, I will get there, but it might not happen as soon as I want it to.
00:07:24
Speaker
And honestly, looking back,
00:07:28
Speaker
I can't believe how well I did.
00:07:31
Speaker
I really can't.
00:07:32
Speaker
I've had an incredible year since all that happened.
00:07:37
Speaker
It's been a struggle.
00:07:39
Speaker
It's been tough.
00:07:40
Speaker
There's been times when I've been very frustrated or down on myself and I've had to kind of let those feelings come up and really feel them and understand why.
00:07:51
Speaker
But I haven't stayed in that place.
00:07:53
Speaker
where I felt like I was deathly ill or like I wasn't going to accomplish the things that I've set out to do.
00:08:01
Speaker
I went to so many concerts this year.
00:08:03
Speaker
I saw so many great bands and DJs.
00:08:08
Speaker
And every time I was surrounded with friends and it just felt beautiful to be back in that environment, doing that festival in Oregon, pickathon, where I got to perform comedy and then eat mushrooms in the woods watching an African guitar player who hadn't been in the country in 15 years.
00:08:26
Speaker
I cried.
00:08:28
Speaker
I wept openly.
00:08:31
Speaker
in that crowd because all I could think about is the resilience that I demonstrated while I endured this entire year.

Resilience and Post-Recovery Achievements

00:08:42
Speaker
My wife and I celebrated our honeymoon.
00:08:45
Speaker
Finally, we went to Japan.
00:08:47
Speaker
And when I went to Japan, I was walking 20,000 steps a day all over that country, just realizing that, wow, my knee is back.
00:09:01
Speaker
That surgery didn't hold me back any more than I let it.
00:09:06
Speaker
I was headlining shows.
00:09:07
Speaker
I headlined in Japan, in Tokyo.
00:09:09
Speaker
I judged roast battle in Tokyo.
00:09:11
Speaker
That was so cool.
00:09:13
Speaker
I've traveled to all of these clubs and headlining weekends.
00:09:17
Speaker
I've done so much to put myself in a better place, to set myself up for the future.
00:09:25
Speaker
Because as much as it is about right now,
00:09:29
Speaker
It's also about what's going to happen from all of this.
00:09:34
Speaker
I told myself I was going to use it all to my advantage.
00:09:36
Speaker
And I wasn't exactly sure how, and I'm still not exactly sure how.
00:09:40
Speaker
But I do know that by not ignoring what I went through, by continually processing it, when feelings come up, feel them.
00:09:52
Speaker
I just start crying out of nowhere because something triggers me.
00:09:57
Speaker
A couple of weeks ago, I went to my oncologist to do blood work, just have to do that once a month.
00:10:04
Speaker
And he said, are you still having night sweats?
00:10:05
Speaker
And I remembered when I got out of the hospital that I was literally just turning into a puddle in the middle of the night and soaking my clothing all the way through to the sheets, to the mattress.
00:10:17
Speaker
And I felt disgusting.
00:10:19
Speaker
And I was like, no, don't put me back in that place.
00:10:22
Speaker
But it's his job to ask.
00:10:23
Speaker
And it's my job to be okay with it.
00:10:27
Speaker
And when I think about where I was, it makes me so grateful for where I am.
00:10:34
Speaker
It really does.
00:10:36
Speaker
This was a year that I wouldn't wish upon anybody.
00:10:41
Speaker
It really wasn't.
00:10:42
Speaker
It was just hit after hit.
00:10:45
Speaker
You know, I describe it as the VIP pass to the all-you-can-eat tragedy buffet.
00:10:49
Speaker
When I got cancer, I didn't know that it was going to get worse than that.
00:10:54
Speaker
And it got so much worse.
00:10:58
Speaker
But here I am.
00:11:00
Speaker
Here I am.
00:11:03
Speaker
Doing what I love.
00:11:04
Speaker
Performing comedy.
00:11:05
Speaker
Going to concerts.
00:11:07
Speaker
Dancing.
00:11:08
Speaker
Slacklining.
00:11:10
Speaker
Playing tennis.
00:11:11
Speaker
Cuddling my adorable pugs.
00:11:15
Speaker
Being with my friends.
00:11:17
Speaker
My family.
00:11:19
Speaker
The people who mean the most to me.
00:11:20
Speaker
And trying to shine my light as brightly as I can.
00:11:24
Speaker
Because man, it was dim.
00:11:28
Speaker
It was dark and I wasn't sure how to turn it back on.
00:11:33
Speaker
But sometimes the best way to re-energize, to rejuvenate is just to allow yourself to be dark for a little

Journey to Extroversion and Strength

00:11:43
Speaker
while.
00:11:43
Speaker
That's what I needed in that moment.
00:11:46
Speaker
I'm an extrovert who needed to be an introvert, who needed to realign myself so I could figure out how to move forward.
00:11:55
Speaker
And
00:11:56
Speaker
I've done that.
00:11:58
Speaker
And I'm only going to keep getting stronger as this goes on.
00:12:02
Speaker
Because when I think about that time, it's painful.
00:12:07
Speaker
It's scary.
00:12:09
Speaker
But looking at where I am now, how could I not be amazed as fuck at what I have been through and how I've accomplished so much in that period?
00:12:24
Speaker
If you guys saw my Comedy Central set, you saw me talk a little bit about this.
00:12:28
Speaker
And I'm so excited to say that I'm filming a special.
00:12:33
Speaker
And it's going to encompass all of these things that have happened.
00:12:37
Speaker
I mean, not quite all of it, because honestly, some of it's a little much and it's just not that funny.
00:12:41
Speaker
But the stuff that is, it's going to be a really good special.
00:12:45
Speaker
And I'm going to do something unique and different because that's who I am as an artist.
00:12:50
Speaker
I always try to do something a little bit different.
00:12:53
Speaker
I develop, I grow.
00:12:55
Speaker
I can't stay in one place.
00:12:56
Speaker
It's just not who I am.

Artistic Growth and Gratitude

00:12:58
Speaker
So January 12th in Bridgeport, Connecticut, everything is going to come together and is going to boil up into a beautiful special.
00:13:08
Speaker
And if you want to see me before then, there's a few opportunities like Sunday, November 19th at the Brea Improv, my first time headlining that club, or December 10th in Richmond, Virginia at Garden Grove Brewing,
00:13:23
Speaker
Or January 10th in Baltimore.
00:13:25
Speaker
Everybody, McGoobies.
00:13:27
Speaker
My first time headlining that club two days before we filmed the special.
00:13:31
Speaker
Only two days.
00:13:32
Speaker
That's my last run of the show before I lock it up for good.
00:13:39
Speaker
I'm not glad I had a stroke.
00:13:41
Speaker
I'm not.
00:13:43
Speaker
But I am thrilled that I can be here today and have a little perspective, a little more gratitude.
00:13:52
Speaker
And a little more love for myself and everyone in this world.
00:13:59
Speaker
So if you're here, I love you.
00:14:03
Speaker
And I want you to truly take that in.
00:14:06
Speaker
I love you.
00:14:08
Speaker
And please tell somebody else the same thing today.
00:14:11
Speaker
Because it's for you.
00:14:13
Speaker
It's for them.
00:14:14
Speaker
It's for the entire world.
00:14:16
Speaker
I'll see you next time.
