The Expansion of Star Wars into Animation

00:00:00
Speaker
When the first Star Wars film released in 1977, Star Wars expanded into many different mediums, from novels, comic books, memes, and of course, Star Wars animation.
00:00:10
Speaker
The animated side of Star Wars is its own beast, with a long history of TV shows that expand the galaxy in ways that you could never even imagine in live action. From the Clone Wars all the way to Star Wars Resistance...
00:00:23
Speaker
There's something for everybody in this corner of the Star Wars

Creating the Official Star Wars Animated TV Shows Tier List

00:00:26
Speaker
galaxy. Today, me and my co-host Scotty put aside our differences to create the official animated tier list of This Is The Way Seekers, where we both have to agree on the placement of every single season of Star Wars animated TV.
00:00:46
Speaker
Welcome back to this Is The Way Seekers, a podcast for Star Wars fans by Star Wars fans. My name's Austin SWE. I'm joined with probably the best person to do this type of tier list with Scotty Holiday, the lover of Star Wars animation. Scotty, how are you doing this week?

The Stress of Ranking and Importance of Animated Shows

00:01:06
Speaker
I'm stressed, stress especially after that intro. I've spent a lot of time really racking my brain around this. I've made five of my own tier lists already because I keep changing my mind. um But yeah, here we are.
00:01:20
Speaker
It's going to be fun. Yes, it's going to be super exciting because today we are ranking the Star Wars animated TV shows. A few weeks ago, we did the live action TV shows and we wanted to do the animated ones this time because Star Wars animation is just as important. And honestly, i don't know if this is a hot take.
00:01:39
Speaker
better than the live action shows. Not a hot take on this podcast. ah Yeah. As I was going through and like you said, making our own tier lists, I was like, wow, this is um a lot more positive than the live action shows. I will say that much.

Analyzing Clone Wars Seasons 1 to 3

00:01:56
Speaker
The shows that we're talking about today, we have seven seasons of the Clone Wars, four seasons of Star Wars Rebels, three seasons of the Bad Batch, two seasons of Star Wars Resistance, and then Tales of the Jedi, Tales of the Empire.
00:02:08
Speaker
We won't be talking about Star Wars Visions or Young Jedi Adventures, Forces of Destiny, those types of things. None of the Lego specials, just the canon animated Star Wars TV shows. so Super excited to talk about it.
00:02:20
Speaker
So, Scotty, are you ready?
00:02:25
Speaker
Maybe, but we're gonna start anyway. um so of course, first on the list. we have the Clone Wars season one. Yikes.
00:02:36
Speaker
um i feel like, I feel like I should just start off because I think you'll enjoy this. i have it in D tier. Me too Same exact tier D tier. It's not necessarily bad. It's just yeah boring. In my opinion, it's the starting point of the entire show.
00:02:51
Speaker
The Clone Wars is fucking brilliant throughout all of its seasons, but you know, Not everything can start off being the best of the best. And the Clone Wars definitely wasn't. so Well, I'm going say a little spoiler alert. and We're going see a lot of season ones in D tier for me.
00:03:06
Speaker
Oh, wow. I mean, that makes sense. you know They're trying to find their footing. I mean, we had good world building for a season one in the Clone Wars season one because there was a world already to build off of.
00:03:19
Speaker
And we got Ahsoka Tano. yeah um But her introduction also was not... great yeah but she we all had to warm up to her um so yeah d tier for me d tier yeah nothing really notable but the clone war season two i have it a step above in c tier just because there's so much to love in season two you have the zillow beast arc return to geonosis the mandalore introduction even though the boba fett arc i really enjoyed um um don't forget the introduction of the most important character in the series who is that
00:03:54
Speaker
Jedi Master Terra Sanube and Lightsaber Lost. Of course. That was season two as well. How could I forget? Scottie Holliday's favorite character, Terra Sanube.
00:04:06
Speaker
No, i again, it's not the best that the Clone Wars has to offer, but it's still really enjoyable. And it's a little nostalgic for me as well. I'm pretty sure that season two is like when I started watching the Clone Wars as a kid.
00:04:19
Speaker
i don't really know. As a kid, I didn't know what the fuck season one, season two. I didn't know the difference. Well, I started watching the Clone Wars at the age of 24. So,
00:04:30
Speaker
ah but yeah I also have it in C tier because it's got a lot of fun arcs. I especially like like the zombie G notions, the brain worms. um Oh yeah. We got on top of like all the Mandalore stuff. We got Duchess Satine and the Darksaber.
00:04:44
Speaker
Yeah. And like we all know the Darksaber has gone on to become bigger than this little animated show. yeah So yeah. And this is the season where it started. So I think that's definitely notable for sure.
00:04:55
Speaker
Yeah, I definitely think season two is also where it started to find its footing, find what the Clone Wars wanted

Debating Clone Wars Seasons 4 to 7

00:05:02
Speaker
to be. Because like you said, yeah we kind of get those different things that we've seen that we've never seen before in Star Wars, like an entire horror arc, you know, things like that, that they're kind of breaking the barriers of what Star Wars can be. And that's very much what the Clone Wars is.
00:05:17
Speaker
I mean, we even have Cut Laquane, a clone who literally breaks the mold of being a clone and in this season as well. So, yeah, it's just very telling. Absolutely.
00:05:28
Speaker
So moving on, we have the Clone Wars season three and um this might be a surprise. I don't know. i actually have it in S tier. Wait, we're literally on the same page three for three.
00:05:42
Speaker
We need to start fucking arguing. I'm a pretend like I have it in F tier. I'm just kidding. I literally do have it in S tier and I was going to come here and say the same thing where this might be a hot take. But yeah, I have it in S tier as well.
00:05:54
Speaker
It's just like season three, you mentioned season two, it's finding its footing season three, you know, it did the two things that I love in Star Wars most, there was a lot of good political stuff with like heroes, um ah heroes on both sides with where Padme and Ahsoka go undercover to the Separatist Council with Mina Bonteri. We have um good stuff in general with the fantasy of it, with the Mortis arc. And like, ah we could talk about the Mortis arc for days. oh And like, even we got the costume updates in season three, which I think is notable because one episode, it was, you know, one costume. Then the next episode, everybody looked a little bit different.
00:06:31
Speaker
yeah And it was definitely an improvement ah um at least for Ahsoka. yeah She got out of the, out of the little bandeau, got it hold top a top, a dress actually in leggings, which was nice.
00:06:41
Speaker
yeah definitely a much needed upgrade yeah season three so much to love the citadel arc the clone cadets arc oh yeah 99 oh 99 um like you said the mortis arc the night sister trilogy this was the introduction of the night sisters into at least the night sisters we know of today because they were around since like the ewok movies but the ones we know today with the red dress and everything Green fire, all of it. Yes.
00:07:09
Speaker
And we got Savage, which was, which was interesting because we know what that leads to, but this is where we first, you know, get him. And I loved, you know, we all know I love Ventress. So seeing her go back and kind of learning about the night scissors through her eyes was a really fun way and a really fun arc in this season too. So I'm glad you brought that up.
00:07:29
Speaker
Oh, and speak of the devil. We got Quinlan Vos in his one episode in season three. So, well, at least his one episode where he was like a main character that spoke. Yeah. Love Quinlan Vos. So yeah, S tier for season three.
00:07:43
Speaker
Enough said. It's also very nostalgic for me. This is the one that I like when I think of Clone Wars. I think of season three the most. Yeah. The Clone Wars season four, in my opinion, wasn't as good. i have it in tier.
00:07:58
Speaker
There's still like some very iconic arcs in this one. Obviously, Darth Maul returns in this season. and That's like one of the most iconic things. Yeah. The Umbara arc is probably one of the most critically acclaimed arcs of the Clone Wars.
00:08:14
Speaker
You know, even though it fucking sucks to watch. Fuck you, Pong Krell. It's really good storytelling. um Even though like things like the Mon Cala arc or like the R2 and C3PO mission, those things were were charming, but I have it in a tier. It's not S tier because this season has my least favorite arc, which is Obi Wan undercover.
00:08:37
Speaker
there's just so many things it feels out of character for obi-wan anakin for the entire jedi order it just doesn't seem like something that actually happened in between episodes two and three of star wars so i don't know this is interesting because i also don't love the obi-wan bounty hunter arc yeah I also don't really like the water war arc either.
00:09:02
Speaker
and i remember when I got to season four, cause I was like binge watching it. Cause like I said, I started in my twenties and so and we just got to it and i was like, how many episodes is this damn water war? I will say positive. We got shirtless, sexy Kit Fisto.
00:09:17
Speaker
so that was a plus. um And then we got Zygerian arc, which I actually really like. There's a lot of good stuff in that arc and exploring like the political side of it, the side of like enslaving other species and other cultures, which I really enjoyed.
00:09:34
Speaker
And then of course we have the night sister massacre and the bounty episode, ah episode 20, where we kind of first see Ventress post, everything posted dark side post the night sisters where you really start to see who she wants to be as a person building her own path so you know i have to mention that and of course we got bo-ka-tan real rough real rough and tough bokeh and uh bokeh tan in season four but we got her nonetheless i actually have it though in b tier really and i just talked a lot of positive stuff but like i said i really don't like the water war arc
00:10:08
Speaker
I might like it better now because like I pay

Exploring Rebels Seasons 1 to 4

00:10:11
Speaker
more attention to politics in the real world. And I feel like there's probably a lot of good political stuff there. Yeah. And then the bounty hunter arc is just meh.
00:10:19
Speaker
Right. So i this is going to be our first disagreement. I don't know how you want to play it. But I think that there's a lot of stuff that's better than this season that I would put in A tier. And I don't necessarily think it would fit with those things. um And if it did, it would be at the end.
00:10:39
Speaker
So what do you think? It's interesting because I almost feel the exact opposite where I'm like, okay, now that I'm starting to think about it, there were some more B tier things for me than maybe A tier.
00:10:51
Speaker
But I don't know that Umbara arc really carries a lot of the hype there for me. And it's sad because I've only watched that arc like maybe once or twice and I know everybody loves it and I watched it. But like I need to go back and watch it because it looks like one of the arcs people like you talk about the Cloners like, oh my God, the Umbara arc and like.
00:11:11
Speaker
yeah I need to go rewatch it. It's like most people's favorite arc, I'd say. so And it's heartbreaking. Yeah, oh, it's absolutely heartbreaking. And also just shows like how sophisticated the storytelling of the Clone Wars, a kid's show, actually became. It's honest crazy. Honestly,
00:11:29
Speaker
Honestly, it was getting dark. Yeah. At this point, ah so like just starting with the Umbara arc in general, but then we go from clones killing clones to slaving people. And it gets really depressing with Obi-Wan and Rex, like in the slave camp where I can't remember the Zagurian lady, but she's talking Anakin and just talking about breaking like Obi-Wan spirit and stuff. And it's really sad. And then the poor Torgruda people,
00:11:54
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. I'm thinking a tier for this one. There's, there's a lot to enjoy. you just said, I'm going to decide. so that's fine.
00:12:06
Speaker
Yeah. Well, we got a lot to get through. So we do. ah So speaking of let's move on to season five and season five has one of my favorite arcs, but I feel like is kind of,
00:12:20
Speaker
It's I don't feel like it's a super favorite arc for everybody. I really like the youngling arc, especially the gathering episode. I love that um we get basically malls Mandalore in this season where he takes over the criminal underworld takes over Mandalore.
00:12:35
Speaker
We get Duchess Satine's horrible, heartbreaking death. We get Obi-Wan and Mando armor. And then at the end, you know, we get Palpatine versus Maul and Savage. And then I'm not even talking about the craziest part about this season is the last four episodes.
00:12:51
Speaker
Yeah. With the bombing of the Jedi Temple and Ahsoka eventually leaving the Jedi Order, which I cry. Like if you cry every time, like yeah it's so sad.
00:13:02
Speaker
The only thing I don't love in this one is the droids. I don't like the droids. I love the droid arc because all love i love me some Gregor. Like me, Bergaskon, and all the droids.
00:13:15
Speaker
I don't know. I loved it It's definitely the the worst, worst in quotes, arc of the season. um but you know If we really wanted to get into the defensives of that one, I think the biggest one is it's George Lucas's favorite arc. I know. i knew was going to get brought up when I said I don't like it. I know it's George Lucas's favorite arc, but like George Lucas also put Ahsoka in a bandeau.
00:13:40
Speaker
so listen don't don't come for my king the the the season has some some really high highs like to me it almost seems like a perfect season of the clone wars for me this is my favorite season of the clone wars in s tier even above season three there's no misses here for me i'm i'm not i'm not gonna lie the gathering arc perfect the ondrawn arc is really good, especially if you're into like politics. The Onderon arc is very interesting and has some really interesting ties to the political state that America was in at the time of its release.
00:14:16
Speaker
So. Oh, imagine that Star Wars taking real world politics and reflecting them. Yeah. who Who would have ever thought? So i don't know. To me, it's like 99% perfect. And to me, it's like S tier above the rest.
00:14:32
Speaker
Well, i have it in eight tier. Okay. Um, but above season four, which means it gets to be an S tier behind season three.
00:14:45
Speaker
Yeah. Cause we're going to be fighting about rebels. So I'll just let you have these wins. All right. All right. The clone wars season six, the Netflix season of the clone wars. This just felt like a here. Damn.
00:14:58
Speaker
Here's the rest of it. um stop fucking complaining that we canceled this show here. Damn. Um, I don't know. It's there's still a lot to love. And I have it in a tier because it pretty much falls in line with like the rest of the quality with like season five, season four, the Yoda arc. Interesting. The Order 66 arc. Interesting.
00:15:19
Speaker
The Clovis stuff is interesting. So i don't hate it. tier is fine with me. You forgot two big things, which is one of the things that I love. The fact that we finally get some backstory and Sifo-Dyas and his murder and i'm like the Jedi investigating that.
00:15:35
Speaker
That's a really fun. I don't even know if it's

The Challenges of Star Wars Resistance

00:15:38
Speaker
more than one episode. It might be two. And I wouldn't necessarily say this is the most interesting arc, but it's just a cool moment is the duel between Mace Windu and Mother Talzin.
00:15:47
Speaker
which I feel like is kind of a forgotten yeah arc in this season. But like, I'd be, I'd rather watch that necessarily than Clovis. Clovis is just weird looking, but we do get the banking clan finally on screen, like in Scipio.
00:16:01
Speaker
So that was really cool in season six. I, I feel like season six is very good. um And I feel like people discredit it just because it was like, OK, here's what we had.
00:16:14
Speaker
so we're going to give it to you because we're not happy the show was canceled and neither are you. but we're still going to give you something. um I though I had it in B tier.
00:16:25
Speaker
um But I wouldn't mind putting it. Would you say tier? Yeah. Yeah, because to me, it's just, it's like the same quality as like season four. It's not, there's nothing really bad about it. It's just more like, a it was brought down because when watching it, I wanted to see what the fuck happened next with Ahsoka.
00:16:47
Speaker
And yeah for me, this entire show was about Ahsoka. And then they like intentionally have to avoid anything with Ahsoka besides like that horror. One little vision Yoda had in his sequence where she's dead. Right. Or dying.
00:17:01
Speaker
um sort And we would have had Dark Disciple had they not have canceled it. But that's a whole other story for another day. Right. Honestly, I'm leaning more towards B tier now after talking about it. Okay.
00:17:13
Speaker
Then beat here. It is. That's a win for Scotty. There you go if yeah So we know that there is a big gap between season six and season seven, but we're going chronologically and how the story goes. So the clone where season seven is the next thing we're going to discuss.
00:17:32
Speaker
And i feel like most people would be like S tier, right? Because it's so good. yeah um But we do not have the best arcs in this season.
00:17:42
Speaker
And i I put it in A tier originally, but I might want to put it lower because personally, i don't hate the Martez sisters, but like, did we need that? Not at all. Especially for a season of the Clone Wars that was meant to be like All right, it's time to wrap this up, wrap things up. I get we needed to see where Ahsoka was, but to dedicate an entire four episodes of this while already dedicating the first four episodes of the season to a backdoor pilot for the Bad Batch.
00:18:11
Speaker
Yeah. Okay. Okay. Let me talk about that because honestly I was so irritated when we got the bad batch as like the first arc because we they basically released it already. Right. Just not finished. So I'm like, we already had this arc and now you're just giving it to us like perfected. Right.
00:18:29
Speaker
That felt so cheap. And like, I complained about it all the time and I was like, okay, but what if we get dark disciple, which we were never going to get it. But I'm like, there was other arcs that if you wanted to finish,
00:18:40
Speaker
Because you were finishing

Evaluating the Final Animated Series and Their Impact

00:18:41
Speaker
the Clone Wars. Right. As a series. Like this was the arc you chose. The one you already released. And then the Martez sisters. Siege of Mandalore. Amazing. Yeah. Like the visuals.
00:18:52
Speaker
Amazing. The duels. Amazing. The emotion. Amazing. Amazing. but yeah that doesn't mean it is still a great season. Does the siege of Mandalore really like make it S tier?
00:19:07
Speaker
No. Does it make it A tier? i Probably not. Oh, I think okay the siege of Mandalore as an arc, like, because to me that's like a hundred percent like that there, it doesn't get better than that. So even if they have a literal 0% episode, which none of the episodes were, you're still at at least 50% here.
00:19:27
Speaker
So, i mean, I don't know why I'm trying to argue. had an A tier on my own rankings. No, but you bring up such good points. And it's the it's the exact same thing that I was thinking where it's like, it's not S tier. And, you know, people are probably going to be like, what the fuck? Why would you not include it in S tier? But,
00:19:46
Speaker
The Siege of Mandalore arc does not carry the Trace and Rafa arc, the Bad Batch arc. And i almost feel like Disney kind of regrets the way that they handled ending off the Clone I hope they do.
00:19:57
Speaker
Where they're like, oh, just three more arcs. Because look at this. They've had a three season TV show come out that is basically a successor to the Clone Wars. That's basically like a, oh, sorry that the Clone Wars ended. We'll continue the story here.
00:20:10
Speaker
um Not that we didn't like the Bad Batch, but it wasn't the story I wanted continued. Exactly. And they could have easily just made three more seasons of the Clone Wars like originally intended before it got canceled.
00:20:22
Speaker
But here we are. well Dave Filoni had to go to live action land, so Yeah. ah so Honestly, so we want to put it in a tier or B tier.
00:20:34
Speaker
Put it in a tier. A tier. Okay. I'm not going to put it above season four. Okay. That's, I feel like that's a good compromise for it. Yes. all right so we are now getting into star wars rebels and i think that this is the point of the podcast where people are going to be very upset at me because for me rebels over the clone wars all day jesus every day
00:21:02
Speaker
Okay, so starting with Rebels Season 1, pretty much follows suit with the Clone Wars where the first season is probably the worst season. But as I said before, I love Star Wars Rebels. So to me, the worst season of Star Wars Rebels falls in the B-tier category.
00:21:20
Speaker
People remember the show as childish, but I don't care. It's really charming. The story of Ezra joining the crew. And, you know, you're telling me that the episode where he makes friends with Zeb, Fight or Flight, is not a top tier Star Wars episode. It fucking gives the the message of friendship across. It's it's great.
00:21:40
Speaker
And I don't care what anybody says. It may have been childish, but it was much more sophisticated than a lot of the other characters. child-like Star Wars content we've been getting. Star Wars Rebels, we had it fucking great back in the day.
00:21:54
Speaker
And let's just hear Scotty tear it all down. I don't hate it.
00:22:02
Speaker
Um, I do think like people want to argue about the clone wars series having filler episodes. feel like rebel season one has a lot more filler, um, episodes that aren't as exciting. And it is different because it's telling more of a close knit group story versus an anthology.
00:22:20
Speaker
So I get that. Um, i had rebels season one in c tier because it's not bad like you said it does have charm um i like the introduction of the grand inquisitor i like the introduction of like the lothall temple and things that go on there like the lore of it all because we know i like the fantasy we get ahsoka's return at the end of the season yeah but that's the end so it doesn't really count Exactly. So this is why it's C tier.
00:22:49
Speaker
i mean, that's that's fine, I guess. I mean, if you're saying that it's because of filler episodes, I think that the big difference between the Clone Wars and Rebels is that, like you said, Rebels is telling a story about...
00:23:04
Speaker
this these six characters and and nobody else really where the Clone Wars is telling the story of the entire fucking galaxy for some reason and it works and it's a great anthology series but I am much I love the cohesive story of Star Wars Rebels much more and focusing on a smaller set of characters and it makes it so much easier to accept filler episodes because all the filler episodes are are towards like character arcs that actually matter towards the overall story of Star Wars Rebels.
00:23:37
Speaker
The Clone Wars, there's so much that literally doesn't matter at all to the final point we get to in Season 7. I think a better way to put it versus filler, because i wasn't trying to say that it's just a bunch of filler episodes, but it almost feels like it's a season entirely of development, which is not a bad thing, because that's one of the things we complained about now is that we don't get any character development.
00:24:01
Speaker
rather i'm like they like That's like standard, like a show should be all development, especially a season one. Well, that's why it's in C tier.
00:24:12
Speaker
But why? Why does it get docked down for for being what it should be? Because I feel like it spends the entire time on development and we don't get a ton of like... As opposed to what?
00:24:26
Speaker
because i'm confused i'm confused with the difference between story and development actually is they very much go hand i mean we we talked about this with when we were talking about the mandalorian season one versus the mandalorian season two on our tier list where you like season one a lot more because it tells that tight story i enjoy season two more because it takes that and then opens up the galaxy to the characters and And I feel like rebels are so closed in and minuscule because they focus so much on this tight knit group and all this development that it doesn't get exciting.
00:25:02
Speaker
Like really, and I'm not excited to see where these characters go until they can actually go somewhere.
00:25:10
Speaker
I mean, okay.
00:25:14
Speaker
Understandable, because I don't know, for me, I just, those characters, I cared so much where they went. And the like I said, the introduction of of Ezra into the group is like,
00:25:26
Speaker
that that's what season one feels like to me. And it's like this group finding their footing. And it's, it's, it's amazing to me. So I don't know. B tier for me, I guess, where, where would we put this app for between B tier and C tier?
00:25:40
Speaker
C tier at the beginning. all right. That's fine with me because um like i said, it's definitely not the best season of Star Wars Rebels. Probably the worst.
00:25:52
Speaker
It's not. Yeah, it's the worst season, but it's still not a bad season. Right. I'm not trying to say that it's bad. I don't think it's bad. The animation a little rough at times, but, you know, that always improves with the animated shows. Yeah.
00:26:07
Speaker
um But I think we should move on to season two, the Clone Wars season seven before the Clone Wars season seven existed, essentially. ah Because not only i mean, we start with Vader, which is great.
00:26:21
Speaker
ah But this season gave us the return of Rex, Ahsoka, Maul. We get more Inquisitors. but We've got i know this is one of your favorite and episodes, the honorable ones, where we get Callus and Zeb and their romance.
00:26:37
Speaker
romance um And then there's a lot of emotion. and like I said, wrapping up the Ahsoka storyline that season seven of the Clone Wars should have wrapped up. And I love it for that.
00:26:48
Speaker
I really like Rebel season two, but I don't think it's because it's Rebel season two. um I think I like it a lot because it ties in to the Clone Wars a lot and Ahsoka's story with her and Anakin.
00:27:02
Speaker
um So I don't disagree that season two has that, but I will make the case that season two and season three as well. They do it all. and season two really highlights characters like Hera, Kanan and Zeb.
00:27:18
Speaker
We get Zeb's backstory with the Lasats and we have yeah his family come in with Hera. We get a lot with the Twi'leks and her father, Cham Syndulla and Tying into the work that she did as a kid with Kanan, having the clones come in is very challenging for him as a Jedi who survived order 66.
00:27:39
Speaker
So while I do agree that season two does focus a lot on like tying up those loose ends in the clone wars, but, it also expands those characters in a really good way. And to me, it it just feels like a perfect continuation of season one, where season one is like, all right, we're going to figure out this group as a collective.
00:27:59
Speaker
And now season two and season three, we're going to start focusing on these characters individually and what these characters have gone through individually to get them to this point.
00:28:09
Speaker
So I have it in A tier because on top of the Clone Wars stuff, which I loved and really made that season so exciting. Like I said, there's so much character moments for the six characters that I'm here for and the six characters I'm here to watch.
00:28:28
Speaker
Okay, maybe I led into this the wrong way, but I have the season in S tier. Oh, wasn't I wasn't saying any of this stuff before in a negative way. um But I meant it more of I like it, not necessarily because of the rebel stuff in it.
00:28:46
Speaker
I like it because it continues stories from the Clone Wars, which I really enjoyed and got connected with those characters. But you're right. There are great character moments with Zeb and the Lasats and realizing that literally his people aren't all dead and massacred like he thought.
00:29:00
Speaker
And yeah, Kanan and the clones. It's a really interesting dynamic because Ahsoka, who he's, she's like, becomes a little bit of a mentor to Kanan on top of Ezra, but like, she's the one telling him to go seek out the clones. And Ezra is like, why don't we work with these people? And Kanan just like, can't get through it. It's a really, it's a lot of good stuff there as well.
00:29:20
Speaker
um And then i I can't remember if I already mentioned this, but once again, Ahsoka's white lightsabers, that reveal something we had never seen before. Like, and we're, why are we not even talking about Twilight of the Apprentice?
00:29:33
Speaker
Why does neither of us even mention that? I mean, that's what that's kind of what I ah pictured when we're talking about tying to the Clone Wars. so I mean, that's like the big climax. And like that between Ahsoka and Ezra and Kanan and Maul and all the Inquisitors that are there on Malachor and then eventually ending with Vader and Ahsoka, the original Vader mask crack with Anakin peering through.
00:30:01
Speaker
Yeah. Like, that's why I got the season in S tier. The emotions are good this season. Yeah, I'm good with tier. It's just I didn't put it there for myself because in my opinion, Rebels peaked in later seasons, and in the next two seasons, which we'll talk about.
00:30:17
Speaker
um So for me, that's why I had it in A tier, but I'm perfectly fine with S tier. I think it would go well behind the two seasons of the Clone Wars we have in S tier. That's why I just let you continue talking. Cause I was like, I'm going to see how long Austin tries to defend why this should be higher when he doesn't realize that I literally have it in the highest category myself.
00:30:38
Speaker
Well, there you go. um Rebel season three is the one that I have in S tier. This is where I think the show peaked. Okay. how much more can i say kanon's journey just fucking brilliant after losing his eyesight and kind of the journey he goes through with the bendu and the things he goes through with you know feeling like is he good enough to train ezra um and then also we have the mandalore stuff the dark saber stuff continuing what i really loved about season two where we're getting more of
00:31:10
Speaker
individual character sabine is fucking amazing in this series and i love sabine actually have tia sakar's signature right behind me and we um and we always quote we always quote uh sabine from this season too when she starts hacking with the dark saber you and i quote that back and forth so many times my family everything yep i love it i i actually remember talking to tia about that and how she was saying because when i met her i was with my group of friends and she was talking about recording that that that sequence and and kind of literally moving pretending like she's actually moving like sabine was so yeah yeah season three i i really liked it and so i have it in an s tier
00:32:00
Speaker
Okay. Well, I like the season a lot too. and um some things that I do want to mention that you did and that I enjoy about it is we get that really good episode on Geonosis with Saw Gerrera.
00:32:13
Speaker
Yes. And then we get that kind of contradicted with Mon Mothma and what she's doing at the time and showing how they were butting heads as well. I really enjoy that in this season on top of, know,
00:32:25
Speaker
you know, the trials of the dark saber and the Mandalore arc, we get the return of Boca tan with that, which is great. um And then of course we get the twin sons episode yeah where mall is finally slain.
00:32:38
Speaker
And it was like actually treated, Like an actual story rather than just being like, oh, here's Obi-Wan Kenobi. Like it it tied into what was happening with Ezra and Maul, which was the actual conflict between these two characters. had nothing to do with Obi-Wan and Maul.
00:32:56
Speaker
But the way they intertwined Obi-Wan and Maul's story that never got to finish off in the Clone Wars into this, brilliant. s I actually I actually really like the Ezra mall stuff in season three. Yes. And I know we've talked about it before separately, but I do kind of wish that he did go a little bit more dark um in this season. I like what we got. I mean, the first episode, like even when Sabine's like, did Kanan teach you that?
00:33:23
Speaker
And as was like, he did it. And like, it is just so good. um We got the green lightsaber too. I have to talk about the green lightsaber since, you know, I think Disney hates green lightsabers.
00:33:34
Speaker
So that was notable. um In talking about this, i wouldn't necessarily put it as S tier, but I think it's A tier worthy. Yeah, I think um because it's my favorite season of Rebels, think A tier at the front makes sense.
00:33:55
Speaker
The most sense for our compromise. Sure. Sure, bestie. all right All right. All right.
00:34:05
Speaker
And finally, we come to the big climax, Rebels Season 4, which Rebels Season 4 did a lot. And i even know Dave Filoni has talked about the fact that he enjoys that he got this season to actually give a conclusion to his story, which I'm sure was a little bit of shade after he couldn't complete the Clone Wars.
00:34:26
Speaker
So I know he was very happy about that. So this season, i really enjoy Kanan's growth in the season and. I mean, he grew throughout season three, but then we actually get to see him in like a fully realized, confident form in this season.
00:34:41
Speaker
Of course, we get his sacrifice, which very emotional um Jedi Knight, especially after his little love trip with Hera in the episodes previously. like That's such a good time.
00:34:53
Speaker
We get the return of the Mortis gods and like the Lothal Temple, the world between worlds. We get we get a lot we get a lot coming back to life which is a lot in itself and even palpatine yes there's a lot that happens in rebel season four um so much that we could probably spend 20 minutes on it but yeah the thing to remember rebel season four actually has the least amount of episodes of any season of star wars rebels it was actually cut yeah short so
00:35:25
Speaker
It feels like it. Yeah. Even though I would say it's around the same quality as like season three, I actually have it a step lower in a tier just because it's short, but sweet. It has like a lot of great moments.
00:35:41
Speaker
um But it's just, I feel like there could have been more like, it almost feels like they kind of rushed to get all these things in because it's like, okay, we're ending right here right now. And I love the way things went, but You know, it feels very quick. And because of that, some things can feel a little sloppy, like the world between worlds is iconic to Star Wars Rebels. But I honestly think that that is one of the sloppiest stories we get in Star Wars Rebels. like with the way that you start introducing time travel adjacent yeah things and and mechanics into star Wars.
00:36:18
Speaker
um And, and kind of that being how a Soka story ended. I mean, now that we have the Soka series, it's a lot different to look back on, but I don't know. um Again, i I feel like I sound like I'm like ragging on it, but in reality, I just have it in a tier. I have it in a tier too. So it's totally fine. Yeah.
00:36:39
Speaker
And it's funny, we keep talking about it being the end, but literally there's an epilogue that we always knew was going to continue the story. Right. And we've seen it continued now. So it's ah it's an end, but it's like an open end.
00:36:52
Speaker
Yeah, absolutely. So yeah I think A-tier. ah gosh, I think end of A-tier makes sense. I don't necessarily yeah think it's better than like Siege of Mandalore.
00:37:03
Speaker
No, and season three I definitely think is a lot better than season four. Right. Well. This one interesting. favorite. um This is the one that I'm probably the most negative about. And it's funny because when we went into this tier list, I was like, wow, I don't think I'm going to have anything in F. But Star Wars Resistance season one proved me wrong because that's the one show that I have in F tier.
00:37:32
Speaker
It's just boring. It's just not, I just did not connect with it. There's really cool world building. And I feel like there's like ideas that are like, okay, this is interesting.
00:37:44
Speaker
and the end of the day, like it never took it there. Right. And as a sequel fan and someone who was like really into the sequels at that time, was waiting for, you know, something, something, anything the Clone Wars, you know, the prequels, they get the Clone Wars, the original trilogy, they get Rebels. So I was waiting for that sequel animated show. And it was this was it.
00:38:07
Speaker
Yeah, the show was just very forgettable. And I mean nothing against the actor Christopher Sean, but Kaz, Kazuto is annoying as fuck. The way people talk about Luke being annoying or Ezra being annoying or Ahsoka being annoying. Nowhere near.
00:38:23
Speaker
Nowhere fucking near Kazuto. Yeah. Um, I also have this show in, uh, F tier and I'm going to tie this in with season two because I don't have a lot to say. i just wrote down positive things because i didn't want to just sit and shit on the show the whole time.
00:38:41
Speaker
So i do have season two and D tier. Um, And in general, I like the characters of Orca and Flix, the queer coded couple love them because they are very overtly queer.
00:38:53
Speaker
and so I really enjoy that. I liked the um Captain Doza's wife, Taurus mom, how we learned that they were kind of estranged because she joined the Rebel Alliance and then eventually the resistance.
00:39:04
Speaker
I like this story with Yeager losing his family yeah because of racing. And that's why he doesn't like racing and is super against it. like the Miri Allen pirate girl who's purple, whose name I don't remember. And i like the relic Raiders episode where they go into the Sith temple and we get Miku Gray because that was the most interesting, exciting thing.
00:39:25
Speaker
And honestly, because we know now that it was originally going to be Ventress, that's probably why it was the most exciting part because it tied into something else. Yeah. Yeah. Season two at its best. It's definitely because of the expansions to the lore.
00:39:40
Speaker
I also did enjoy more of like the tie-ins to the sequels, I guess, with like the battle of the car stuff. And Starkiller base. Yeah. Like we get that whole scene in this show, which is very deep for this show that feels like a bumbling idiot vibe the entire time.
00:39:57
Speaker
Yeah. yeah Yeah, I think at the end of the day, we both just did not connect with Star Wars Resistance. Just what a waste of ah waste of resources, in my opinion.
00:40:10
Speaker
And if you like it, that's totally fine. You can love it. No, fuck you. No, I'm just kidding.
00:40:17
Speaker
Okay, so moving on to a better show. Well, interestingly enough, as I say better show, this season I actually have in tier. The Bad Batch season one.
00:40:29
Speaker
Overall, the show, i really look at it fondly. But season one, and didn't it started off strong. It had an interesting premise with like Crosshair leaving, Omega joining the group, but those things are largely ignored until the finale.
00:40:44
Speaker
And instead it favors... cameos You know, who's going to return this week? Cad Bane, Fennec Shand. Are they even exciting cameos? right Were they even exciting cameos, really?
00:40:56
Speaker
no it was just like, here's here's the Clone Wars. We're continuing the Clone Wars, isn't it? felt like oh god oh god is this really what we're doing with star wars now we're just gonna fucking make a continuation of a show that you guys canceled and you didn't have to cancel it and now we're just gonna make like a you could uncancel right and you could uncancel it at any time but instead you're like but we're gonna give you this like adjacent show instead yeah i agree also have it in d tier um i like the stuff that they did with ryloth and the idea of like hera and her family but i'm like they were just like let's take this rebels character and put her in clone wars and she's friend with the girl clone that we created yeah um and i like the episode where they go to raxxas
00:41:44
Speaker
and save the senator who looks like mr pringle yeah but overall yeah i thought the same thing it was just like uh here's fennec shand here's hara and the fact that they gave fennec shand her same exact look from the mandalorian yeah it's it's a it's a weird season of the show because like i said i think it gets better
00:42:11
Speaker
It gets better. Take it from me.
00:42:15
Speaker
All right. I think we can move on from that one because there's not much more to say. and Right. um This may be a little bit of a hot take, but I really love the Bad Batch season two.
00:42:28
Speaker
and tan i think it's the best season ah i think there's a lot of memorable arcs in this one and a lot of cool stuff that it kind of does the opposite of rebels i feel like where we spent a lot of character building in season one and then we um expanded this one i almost feel like we do a lot more character building in season two And we get to actually focus on the different members of the bad batch. And there was still cameos, you know, we had Senator Choochie.
00:43:00
Speaker
We had ah the Zillow beast. If you can count that as a cameo, we had gun G, but we also got cool characters like Romare, who I really liked in those first episodes on Serenno. I really liked um mayday from like that great crosshair episode and fees are really fun character too.
00:43:19
Speaker
Unfortunately we got text death. but like that was probably the deepest this show went for the time because it was so unexpected and this show didn't get super dark and it was a very dark moment yeah i i don't think it's the best season i think season three is better than season two i have season two in b tier um I feel like it's because it started off very much the same vibes as season one where we're still... i can't even remember the fucking Trandoshan's name right now. Sid.
00:43:55
Speaker
Where it's just like, oh my god, when are we going to fucking get rid of this character? and it took Notice I didn't mention her. It half this goddamn season to get rid of her. But what I will say about this first half of the season is that there were like less... It was less like, oh my gosh, here's...
00:44:11
Speaker
more Star Wars stuff. Remember this? And it was more like a Saturday morning cartoon. Like I really enjoyed the racer episode with tech racing. I really enjoyed things like that.
00:44:22
Speaker
What's weird about this season and why i have it in B tier instead of something like D tier, like last season is because the second half of the season, all of a sudden just became like,
00:44:33
Speaker
the best fucking Star Wars you've ever seen. Like, it was it was such a night and day difference between the first half and the second half. Literally right after the Gungie episode, you start getting into things like Crosshair and the Clone Rebellion and, you know, everything with Echo. And it just became so fucking interesting that everything, it to me, it's like the first half is D tier and the second half is S tier, which to me makes season two B tier altogether.
00:45:02
Speaker
Yeah. And it really does turn at the moment of the double episode with Senator Chuchi, you start like working on, like working into the clones and how the Republic is just trying to throw them away and ignore the fact that they just fought for them in the war.
00:45:17
Speaker
That's where it really gets super deep. I also want to point out, cause we haven't mentioned it, that great episode where it, the episode itself isn't that exciting. It's where they go to that mining planet and tech and Omega have that moment together.
00:45:29
Speaker
and we kind of get literally into his head where he's like, you know, I may feel or react to things differently than others, but it doesn't mean like that. I don't still feel those emotions like you do. That was such a great moment, such a standout moment. Tech really shined this season, which makes sense because he died at the end.
00:45:48
Speaker
But, um, based on our tier list, yeah, I'm going to have it in B tier as well. um i'd say above lost missions to be honest yeah yeah i agree above lost missions all right and finishing off the bad batch with season three in my opinion the best uh season of the show but still not good enough to be tier even though i really connected with like that again the first half of the season it's like each season is split into halves or something
00:46:18
Speaker
um The first half with Omega and Crosshair, fucking brilliant. And we have the podcast episodes to prove it. You can go back and watch. I loved, loved, loved Crosshair and Omega's team up and Crosshair's redemption.
00:46:33
Speaker
Yeah. they made me care a lot about like the uncertain future of these characters we spend a lot of time with like what's going happen with omega there's entire episodes like the ventress episode for example dedicated to like the future of omega the issue to me is that and i've we've talked about this before a lot of that doesn't really get paid off in this season and it all just kind of feels like set up for something else like okay we're gonna see more adventures we're gonna see more of omega
00:47:04
Speaker
um and it also the season from what i remember you have pabu getting attacked and then it's like the show ends like it it didn't feel like there was much resolution besides like obviously the attack ending and then yeah now all a sudden it's the future and that's the show Well, you would think that I would rank this a lot highly because Ventress is in it and it brought her return. But like you even said, that doesn't go anywhere. Right.
00:47:38
Speaker
We get like a little preview for something that it hasn't happened. And I don't know if it's going to happen at all with not only Ventress, but like Omega. We don't know what's happening with any of these characters, which is fine.
00:47:50
Speaker
But it just feels like. Like you said, the first half of the season was really great. Got lots of great character moments. The second half of the season was like, okay, well, I guess we need to wrap this up somehow. um Even all the weird stuff with the CX clones.
00:48:05
Speaker
yeah Oh yeah. That was like really weird where it was like, that's an interesting idea to have like an anti bad batch group, but They did nothing with all sides. I didn't even mean the anti bad batch. That was even worse. I just meant the fact that like it seems like we're going to get this big reveal. And I know a lot of us, including me, was like, it's going to be tech.
00:48:24
Speaker
Some people are saying it's going to be crosshair like a clone of crosshair. We still don't know. We never got the mask off. Yeah, what I assume is it's just like the opposite of the Bad Batch, like anti-Bad Batch. But again, they didn't really go into it. So honestly, discussing it now, I'm like, why do I have this in A tier?
00:48:43
Speaker
I don't know either because i have it in B tier. And i like I said, I think season two is much better. Yeah, honestly, thinking about it, it's difficult because it's like, I feel like season two and season three, they have like half of really good seasons and then like the other half not so great. In my opinion, the second half of season three that's not so great is better than the first half of season two.
00:49:13
Speaker
So I guess that's why I would have it higher. yeah i like I like the entirety of season two. um But that's just me. yeah And you know what's funny? Speaking of, you mentioned the Gungie thing is an issue.
00:49:27
Speaker
That was almost like our first peek into Omega possibly tapping into the Force. Yeah, and no, I never said the Gungie episode was an issue. i said that oh after that is the the shift where we have like Senator Choochee coming in and everything.
00:49:44
Speaker
Okay, I'm sorry. We're not talking about Season 2 anymore. My bad. Season 3 beats here, so... above season one? I don't know.
00:49:57
Speaker
Um, just put it in the middle, I guess. I would put it behind the Lost Missions because the Lost Missions actually, despite the fact that they don't feel cohesive in their season as a story, they're more, we get answers in there.
00:50:15
Speaker
It's not setting up things that we just don't know what is happening and we'll never find out possibly. So I would have it after the Lost Missions. But what do you think? I think before the Lost Missions, I liked season three and it has a lot of my favorite Star Wars moments where season six of the Clone Wars, I don't think has anything I would consider my favorite.
00:50:41
Speaker
And the audience that stuck with us after we just stopped reviewing the bad, bad season three, um they're going to be mad if we don't, if we don't put it higher. So for y'all, ah I'll allow it to be higher than the OGs for y'all for sticking around as a thank you.
00:51:00
Speaker
Yes. All right. I feel like ah we thought rebels was going to be where I feel like the tail series are going to be weird. um We have tales of the Jedi.
00:51:14
Speaker
And I think we can both agree. The Dooku episodes are really great. um It adds so much to him as a character. right It ties into not only the Phantom Menace, but Attack of the Clones.
00:51:27
Speaker
And I really enjoy that. And I really liked seeing his fall. I really loved what it did for Yaddle as a character. That was probably my second favorite part of this a series.
00:51:40
Speaker
And I love the first Ahsoka episode where she's a baby. Yeah, i I have it in C tier because pretty much echoing what you said, there's three great episodes, three not so good episodes. And to be honest, I don't even like the baby Ahsoka one that much. It just feels like...
00:52:02
Speaker
It's just like like Dave Filoni patting himself on the back or something like that. Where it's like, here's the introduction of this character. It means absolutely nothing to what we know of her. And that's my biggest issue with the Ahsoka stuff.
00:52:15
Speaker
Where Dooku, we're getting so much more information and and more things to learn about Count Dooku. That kind of not only changed Count Dooku as a character, but... the entire star Wars story.
00:52:28
Speaker
And then the Ahsoka stuff, it's all shit that we knew And the baby stuff, we could have just assumed that she was a baby at one point. and it was Taking it to the Jedi order. Technically we even already saw that in the clone war. Right. And one of the opening montages, we see her in Plo Koon when he found her on Chile.
00:52:48
Speaker
Yep. So, Yeah, I feel like this series would have been better if the Ahsoka episodes were tighter, if it maybe explored Ahsoka novel and following that since it already retconned it anyway. Or if we got, you know, Ahsoka after she got out of the world between worlds since we still don't even know what happened there. Right. I think it was a wasted opportunity that we did not see how she created her white lightsabers, but are now where to assume that she got them from the bird beak inquisitor.
00:53:20
Speaker
So yeah, um unfortunately, this is a trend with the Tales series. um But we'll get into that in a second. I have Tales of the Jedi. ah i don't know where to put it.
00:53:33
Speaker
Where did you have it? C tier. It makes the most sense because it's 50% good, 50% not. And that is smack dab in the middle. Oh, God.
00:53:44
Speaker
I would put it before Rebels season one, though. Really? Oof. Only because the Joku stuff is so good and Rebel Season 1 couldn't get that deep.
00:53:58
Speaker
I disagree. i think Rebel Season 1 got pretty deep with Ezra's parents and things like that. But... um
00:54:07
Speaker
I guess this is our tier list, so I'll make the sacrifice, but that just feels so wrong with how much I love Rebels season one. Well, now you can talk about the next show and how much you feel about that. I just echoing pretty much exactly what happened with Tales of the Jedi.
00:54:26
Speaker
Three episodes that are good expand the lore, expand the character they're focusing on, and that is Barriss Off V, and then three episodes of Morgan Elsbeth that tell us the same information we knew beforehand.
00:54:38
Speaker
um There's like teases for more information, like with Grand Admiral Thrawn and Morgan Elsbeth. It's like, okay, we'll see the backstory of why these two characters are connected.
00:54:49
Speaker
No, it just told us the same thing we already knew, which is that they're connected. And um they have, I guess the only new piece of information is that Morgan Elsbeth was involved in the TIE Interceptor project. and Well, and confirmed as a Nightsister.
00:55:10
Speaker
Well, but did this came out after Ahsoka. No, it came out after Ahsoka. So, yeah. And real ones knew that she was a Nightsister ever since the makeup artist for Ahsoka Season 2. Leaked I know. Okay.
00:55:27
Speaker
So here's my thing when it comes to tales of the empire. I think I like it more than most people because i like Morgan Elizabeth. I think she's cool. I think that she doesn't ever get any time to shine.
00:55:38
Speaker
um other than they're just like, we got Diana Lee and Asanto and she can do action. So we're going to have her do action, but we're going give her shit dialogue. right Um, and only use her for action.

I think that's a waste of her character because she could be so much more. Love the bear stuff. um Didn't love the, ah who is it? The fourth sister. she didn't necessarily need to be the one, but I guess i had to pick somebody.
00:56:03
Speaker
And then with the Morgan stuff, I love her night sister episode. and I do like the stuff, seeing how that hate carried over into why she kind of took over Kaladin and was like basically a dictator there.
00:56:19
Speaker
um but yeah, it's not, it's not that amazing. Like if I'm going to rewatch one of them between the two tales series, I'm to watch the Dooku episodes at the end of the day. and That's going to be the ones that returned to, I would still put it in seat here.
00:56:36
Speaker
Yeah. I would put it above tales of the Jedi, honestly. Cause for me, the ones that I would watch is the bearish off the ones, but that is just because for me, you know, my star Wars brand and that's redemption stories.
00:56:49
Speaker
And I even enjoyed seeing the fourth sister redeemed. So yeah. And Morgan has the opposite of a redemption story. Yeah. But I mean, that's not like, like I would never say, Oh, that, that I don't like that story because of that. But at the same time, I guess that makes sense. Like, yeah, I don't connect with it as much.
00:57:10
Speaker
um But for me, the Morgan stuff, it just, when they announced tales of the empire, was like, hell yeah. Like we're going to get more of this character that, a lot of us had already said, Oh, I guess we're never going to get more of her. And she has a lot of potential for more, but she died. And then it was like, this show comes out and we have another chance. And then they wasted that chance to give us more.
00:57:34
Speaker
So, yeah. Well, I think, I do think that the clone were season two is better than tales the empire. We have to keep that in mind too.
00:57:45
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, for me, for me i if if Tales of the Jedi is in front of Rebels Season 1, then Tales of the Empire would have to at least be above Season 1, I guess.
00:58:02
Speaker
I think it should be above Tales of the Jedi. but Because like the Ahsoka episodes are like even more offensive than like the Morgan. Yeah, the Morgan stuff is much more entertaining than the Ahsoka stuff. All right, well then let's do this.
00:58:18
Speaker
let's put your fucking rebel season one to the first spot. It's probably all a plan that you had to. trick me and but yeah Um, let's put tales of the Jedi after ah no leave tales of the Jedi where it is.
00:58:35
Speaker
And then put tales of the empire. oh This is really hard because I keep thinking back to like the Duchess Satine stuff and like the Mandalore plot that I really, really like in season two of the Clone Wars.
00:58:49
Speaker
um
00:58:52
Speaker
And you still think that Tales the Empire is before Tales of the Jedi. Yeah. Because it's like there's there's more to enjoy. Yeah, and the Dooku stuff is still deeper than Duchess Satine and Obi-Wan. Just smitten.
00:59:07
Speaker
So, right, fine. Do your Rebels and then do your Tales of the Empire and then Tales of the Jedi and then one more season two. Oh, I love being right.
00:59:19
Speaker
All right. This was tough. that It was tough. A lot tougher than I thought it would be. but again like i said at the start of this episode comparing it to the live action shows this is like these are all amazing and if we did an entire tier list i think i think it would be animation up top live action at the bottom with like a few mixed in you know yeah a few for sure anomalies Well, i hope you all had as much fun going through this tier list as we did.
