Introduction and Friend-themed Cereal

00:00:08
Speaker
Well, hello and welcome to the latest episode of the Purple Door podcast, a friend's rewatch pod. I'm one of your hosts, Alistair here with our co-host, Deanne. Deanne, how are you today? I'm doing great, Al. How are you? Wonderful. Well, Deanne and I don't usually get to see each other too much, but we got to see each other this afternoon. She stopped by my house. And if this was a video podcast, I would show you the treats that she got for me, including some friend cereal, which we're very excited to try.
00:00:36
Speaker
Yes. Yeah, we haven't tried it over here yet either. um So but I think it'll be fun. It was so random. We were out grocery shopping. And I said, Oh my gosh, look at this cereal.
00:00:48
Speaker
We need to try it for the podcast, obviously. Exactly. This is the service we provide to our listeners. So that's absolutely fine. To let you know if the latte flavored breakfast cereal is delicious or not. Right. We'll have to post it on social media. We'll let the people know. Yes. This is what we do. That's awesome. Very

Speaker
good. Well, I'm excited to get stuck into this week's episode, but as usual, we'll start off by playing some bamboozled. And I feel like we've both got some good questions for each other this week. Why don't you start off with one? All right. All right. Al, here's the question. Who is presenting the play, Joey's play at the beginning?
00:01:42
Speaker
You know, I watched the scene a couple of times trying to see if the theater was named and I didn't see it. I did not catch that. And maybe it is, I didn't see it on the front. I do not know who's putting on the play. Okay, well, and it's actually, I think it's who wrote the play. No, I i missed that detail. It's Daniel E. Hank presents Daniel Ehag, I miss that detail altogether.

DVD vs Streaming Differences Discussed

00:02:12
Speaker
It's a rough start. I'm interested though as we whenever we dig into this um episode to see if our episodes are seen for seeing the same because it's quite possibly that they are not so
00:02:27
Speaker
But anyway, and that piece could possibly be different, but it's like the first scene, like after the play, after the intro, yeah and it shows the poster that has the title of the um play on it right before they go into the theater. And it says, Daniel daniel E. Hank,
00:02:50
Speaker
presents and then the name of them. I feel like that scene is there, but it might be better i remember just I was looking for the name of the theatre because I thought that'd be a good question. But I know that ah some DVDs are definitely different from what's streaming and also DVDs back in the UK are different sometimes from the ones here just because they're two different, what are they called, like standards and practices? you know What's allowed on a PG and what's not?
00:03:17
Speaker
things like that. So there are sometimes differences. okay I'll be very interested to see if that's one of

Joey's Play and Missing Scenes

00:03:24
Speaker
them. We'll have to dig into that. Well, on that note, I did a little digging because, you know, I've seen this episode as you have many times. I never knew what Joey was actually singing about in the beginning. Do you know what Joey's song that he sings in the opening scene is actually about?
00:03:46
Speaker
Well, no, not I figure he's Sigmund Freud, right? And he's doing like a therapy session with the woman. He is. But ah but you know like they the song he sings at the beginning and then they sing it again at the end, it's like all you want. And so it's all you want is a... And then I don't... So I was completely lost. So I had to do a little bit of a Google deep dive. And it's it's all about a woman who he thinks wants a sex change.
00:04:19
Speaker
this yeah There's various euphemisms in there, um including all you want is a dinkle and things like that.
00:04:32
Speaker
so Yeah. Well, there you go. Now we know. who have one yeah I had no idea until this afternoon. So it is about the song is about this woman patient who wants a sex change. You'll learn something every day. Well, there you go. Okay. So we are not off to a great start, but what have you got for me?
00:04:51
Speaker
Wait, you have another, you haven't given me a question yet, have you? Oh no, that was the question. That was the question. Sorry, sorry. Yeah, no. I'm like, that's just an interesting piece of. Right. All right. What movie does Estelle say that they are going to be like?
00:05:14
Speaker
God, I don't even remember that at all. No. Here's a quick side question. Do you see Estelle in your DVD version? Yeah. There's a whole scene. That is cut. it said I looked at IMDB earlier and it credits her, but then says on IMDB that it gets cut. It's not on the HBO Max version. You don't see her. Okay. So what there tell me, what does it say she'll be? I'm going to have to buy the DVD. It's an entire, okay. You know, at the end of the, um,
00:05:51
Speaker
Okay. Well, anyway, it's Sleepless in Seattle. She says, because she, she brings up Sleepless in Seattle. She's like, you know, that movie. And he's like, yeah. And he's like, Oh man. You know, thinking that she's about to say that she's had some, she's like, no, we're going to be happy like them. I so like literally going to go tomorrow. I don't know what places are open and try and find season one on DVD so we can loop it. Yeah. Cause on IMDB, I thought it was interesting that she was credited.
00:06:21
Speaker
But I'm pulling it up just now. I feel like it says credited but deleted or something. Scenes deleted. You're absolutely right. Is it? There we go. Yeah, that is not on the max version. How funny. Well, fun fact, this is the last episode on this DVD. So like, ah you know, each season is like a ah series of like five DVDs to get them all.
00:06:47
Speaker
um And so I can bring y'all I'll bring y'all this DVD. You don't have to go and try and find it. OK. And y'all can watch this episode and see the scenes that would be better. That would be a lot of fun to do.

Joey's Movie Role Announcement

00:07:00
Speaker
All right. Well, I'm over to so far now. I just realized I do have a numbers question for you. OK. Again, we're still in this opening scene when Joey's play finishes. How many actors and actresses are on the stage taking about?
00:07:17
Speaker
Bum, bum, bum.
00:07:23
Speaker
Uh, uh, three. It's five. It's five. Five. It's five. I'm like, I know that there's the lady and I know that there's Joey. I figured, okay. Yeah. Great. Okay. All right. We're zero for two, both of us, but we've got a few more questions to go. Awesome. Okay.
00:07:48
Speaker
Um, what are the two things that Joey asks for from Monica whenever he comes over the day of the shooting? Ah, I know one of them is lotion. Is that right?

Chandler and Aurora's Complex Relationship

00:08:07
Speaker
Kind of. One lotion? moat Moisturizer. Moisturizer. Uh-huh.
00:08:14
Speaker
And I know she tells him like, just go to the bathroom and don't tell me what you use, which is a great line. Moisturizer. And I don't know the other one. Tweezers for his rogue air. rogue All right. All right. God, we're struggling. Okay. I've got another one for you. When Joey announces that he got the part in the Al Pacino movie,
00:08:40
Speaker
we We know that the several of the friends say, you know, what's the part? Seriously, what's the part? Three friends ask him, what's the part? Can you name those three friends in order? I know it's difficult. No! I know Rachel did. I know Rachel did. But get oh but I...
00:09:07
Speaker
No, i know it was a tricky one. No, no I might have to rewatch it. Three of the five. Three of the remaining five say, what's the part? Or seriously, what's the part? Yeah, I don't know. I know Rachel does. Well, I've got Monica, Phoebe and Ross. So I might have to rewatch it and see. Oh, well, she might have been the one that just goes, oh, because she she does. But We'll double check. wow you know well v d difference That's a great question. My goodness. That's great. What else have you got? We're struggling this week, but we're going to get back on track. How many years of crappy plays has Joey been in? I knew you'd have at least one numbers question. I feel like it's 10. Six. Six. ah All right. Way off. Way off.
00:10:02
Speaker
All right, this one, feel I feel like you've got this one. Although that's really unfair to say, putting a little pressure on. Yeah, I know. honey we we We meet Aurora throughout this episode. When she first meets Chandler, we she tells a story where she and her husband suddenly realize they were in somewhere.
00:10:22
Speaker
and it's it's foreshadowing i know so many things it's yemen it's yemen yemen they were in yemen i'm like give me a ticket to yemen that's right i'm gonna live on yemen street yeah yes all right do you have any more I do.

Joey's Movie Set Experience

00:10:42
Speaker
OK, good. I do. What does the um I don't know if he's the director or whatever on the movie set. What does he refer to Joey as? Oh, I have a lot to say about this scene. And what does he say? He doesn't call him an idiot. No.
00:11:08
Speaker
I think he calls him butt guy or something. He does call him butt guy. Butt guy. All right. There we go. Yeah, we've got got some interest and it will credit our friend Steve who brought something to my attention about that scene we're going to discuss in a bit.
00:11:23
Speaker
OK. I've got two more for you. The first one is very difficult and I wrote it. I don't know if you've ever written a question and gone, ah this is too hard. This one's too hard. But I'll say I'll throw it out there anyway. When Ross wants to discuss monogamy and everyone pretends to fall asleep, what's the name of the person that puts forward the theory he wants to talk about?
00:11:44
Speaker
Okay. Oh, I don't know, but I was like, that would be a great question. And then I was like, Oh my God, that's so obscure and hard. And so I didn't write it down. What's the name? His name is Richard Leakey and he's a real anthropologist and climate change activist. He's a real guy. Now that's funny. That's a funny. That's funny that you thought about it too. I did. I love it.
00:12:11
Speaker
OK, I've got one more. um I've got one more, too. That's perfect. OK. How late the Chandler and Aurora stay up talking? To what time? To what time? Oh, i wrote ah but again, I took a mental note. I feel 2 a.m.
00:12:33
Speaker
It was 2 a.m. All right, we're finishing on a strong note. Yes. All right. My final one for you and Rachel Cleans. What piece of furniture does she move that Monica moves back?
00:12:45
Speaker
The Green Ottoman. Look at us. We're both finishing. on yeah I love it. That's outstanding. The Green Ottoman. Excellent. No idea how many we got right or wrong. Maybe we'll have to track these one of these days. But we we ended up starting slow and finished on a high note. i like There you go. And that's all that matters. Exactly. So let's get stuck into this episode. Yes. The opening scene, Joey's in the theater or he's in a play in the theater. And um It's a play about Freud, as Phoebe said, not just Freud. Yes, with an exclamation point. I love it. yeah Yeah. Rachel's apparently never seen one of Joey's plays before, so I think that's quite nice, because I think Chandler makes a comment about that. Yes, there's no impending sense of doom. That's right. I love that. He does that, everybody. that And Monica's like, i i I forgot a magazine. Yes. it's been What good friends they are to show up knowing it's going to probably not be
00:13:45
Speaker
not be great now i just realized in my notes i did write down the words to his song oh you did yeah so all you want is a dinkle what you envy is a shwang sometimes though which sometimes the witch you can tinkle or play with or simply let hang Wow. Wow. I went through a couple of pages and several people said, yeah, that's what it is. so And he's talking to this woman lying on there the sort psychiatrist couch. So yeah what an interesting choice of song.
00:14:24
Speaker
Right. Right. Well, and on the on the thing, it's a new musical because it's, you know, ah what Daniel E. Hank presents Freud with the explanation mark, a new musical, itd be a new twist on Freud's lessons, I suppose. And it's funny, you know, I tried to write down any questions that i you know I think of to ask you and I didn't write one. But just before we started recording this episode, I spoke to Macy.
00:14:53
Speaker
who had left a movie halfway through it with our fiance, Macy's my daughter, um because they just weren't getting, just weren't enjoying it. And it reminded me of a time that Kate and I had left a play, we went to the theatre and left halfway through, we left an intermission because we just weren't getting it. So I was wondering if you've ever left a movie or I've played a theatre before the end because you just didn't enjoy it.
00:15:23
Speaker
I don't think so. I've fallen asleep. I've fallen asleep plenty of time. There is no sleep like movie theater sleep. The cinema is the ultimate place. Are those reclining dream lounger things? Yes. Oh, it's the best.
00:15:40
Speaker
We went to the movies today and I was actually very disappointed that I fell asleep. i miss i like at that most like They were about to have like the climax. He had just gotten like this gem thing and like I woke up and it was over and I'm like, what happened? You missed the important parts of the story. Yeah.
00:16:04
Speaker
But no, I don't think I've ever like intentionally, no, I will. Like if I'm like, Oh my gosh, this is terrible or whatever. i'll I'll leave and go to the bathroom or go walk around and look at the movie posters and then come back. Yeah. We went to see Fiddler on the roof and it just wasn't, it just wasn't good. Or maybe we weren't in the right mindset for it. I don't know, but we just looked at each other at the intermission and went, you know, you do the little dance. Who wants to say it first? Do you want to leave? Yeah, let's leave. Let's go.
00:16:33
Speaker
yes um yeah off we went. But thankfully, none of the five friends who were there do that. And they wait until the end of while they're waiting for Joey Chandler sees the beautiful woman who we come to know as Aurora. He builds up the courage to approach her. And um I do love that was it was a seven or eight, nine, 10 o'clock to get Ross's attention.
00:16:58
Speaker
Yes. Yeah. At 10 o'clock. Are you serious? I thought it was. thats right Yeah. Yeah. No. it's so wild um I didn't recognize Aurora. So I did a little bit of looking in. I think it's says Sophia Milos, her name. um She was long a long-term cast member in CIS Miami. um Did various other things too, but I've not seen CIS Miami.
00:17:22
Speaker
um But quite interesting, she speaks fluent Italian, Greek, English, French, German, Spanish and Portuguese. Wow. So there's a piece of trivia for you that I didn't know, but she's been in various other things, but nothing that I've seen. I was born in Switzerland, but I spent most of her life in Italy and lives there now, I believe. um But she yeah, she just wasn't somebody that was familiar to me. No.
00:17:47
Speaker
Yeah. I feel like you're looking up something interesting. Oh, I am. I am. She's a very pretty lady. Yeah. And she does a great job in this role. um You know, the character she plays leaves something to be desired regarding her morals, but she does a great role in it, I feel. um And I think it's a good growth opportunity for Chandler's. We'll get into it. But um we flipped from there. over Well, no, before that, yeah, Joey comes out.
00:18:15
Speaker
and um gets presented with the business card. Yes. Good for him. You know, his career's moving forward. So I'm not sure where this deleted scene is on the max. Right here. Is it right? I'd love for you to tell me about it. Because i cause I have written down Estelle left the card with the usher. And then the next scene is inside of Estelle's office. And she's sitting there. he He comes in, he walks in, and and she's sitting at the desk and she's smoking.
00:18:46
Speaker
And he said, you know i'm I'm here to see Estelle, whatever her last name was. And um ah she's like, oh, let ah give me just a minute. And so she turns around and looks out the window. And then she turns around and goes, I'm right here.
00:19:01
Speaker
I don't think I've ever seen this. this. all the cigarettes. I can't imagine the effort it would take to you take cigarettes and put them in the dispenser like it's a totally useless sorry the dogs are barking. Totally useless piece of decor or oh yeah like what's the you know surely you if you smoke you'd have a pack of cigarettes just in your drawer but it's just the obnoxiousness of it I love that piece so much.
00:19:39
Speaker
Well, then she's like, and you don't mind if I eat, right? And so she's eating a sandwich and taking a puff and and it's so gross. just disgust So gross. And then she goes into this thing, you know, um have you seen sleepless in Seattle? And he's like, Oh, yeah, you know, who'd you represent? She's like,
00:19:58
Speaker
Oh, no yeah and no, no, no, no, that's not it. right and um And so they're they they keep talking and then she makes a comment or he's like, so do you want to sign me or something like that? And then she's like, no, I want to make out with you on top of the Empire State Building. It's like, what? And then she's, yeah, let's sign you. And so, you know, you're like, oh, all right. Good for Julie. That's awesome.
00:20:27
Speaker
All right. Well, I'm looking forward to seeing this scene. But um I'm assuming that from there, we then go to the coffee house where Chandler kind of revisits his date with Aurora. And they're all looking at the Magic Eye book. Yeah. And then um Phoebe, I think, is trying to do um almost like a little bit of a palm reading um on Monica right at the beginning. she I think she says something about the lines on her hand. I wonder if that's another difference too.
00:20:56
Speaker
Wait, no, there is a book. Is it a book? Okay. The book that they're looking at and they can see the Statue of Liberty. Ah, again, I'm going to have to go back and rewatch this.
00:21:09
Speaker
I bet this one it might be different too Yeah, they're looking at a magic eye book and like Ross is trying to see do you know those books? I know the books. Yes. Okay, and so Ross can't see it so then he passes it to Phoebe and she sees it right away and then Chandler comes in and he's like, oh it's a boat and he's like See? you know like He's not seeing the Statue of Liberty. He's like, yeah, it's right in front of the Statue of Liberty.
00:21:41
Speaker
I don't, that's not on the stream. Oh, how weird. Okay. and There's a thing on YouTube. I've seen it and it's where if fast forwarding many, many seasons where Phoebe and Chandler are almost playing chicken about, you know, pretending to, they want to hook up. And I don't remember to see Murphy dancing for Chandler on the DVD and on the like Netflix stream. She's doing two different dances.
00:22:08
Speaker
They just sort of spliced it or used two different takes or something. And they're similar, but they're different. And I wonder if, yeah, there I don't think there was a magic eye book. I think Phoebe was looking at Monica's hands, talking about different lines. Because I oh how i was going to ask you if you've ever been to a palm reader or a psychic or what your thoughts are on them.
00:22:28
Speaker
Yeah. Wow. Okay. Yeah. And there's none of that in the DVD version. We're going to have to compare and contrast the yeah these two episodes. I will get you guys the DVD tomorrow. I'm looking forward to it. So then flashback. Oh, go ahead. Go ahead. No, no, no, no. It's okay. Chandler comes in and starts talking about Aurora.
00:22:49
Speaker
Yes that's when he comes in and for me it's a matter of a few seconds from the beginning of this scene he comes in and starts talking about being up till what do we decide to in the morning yeah and then it kind of flashes back to the date where she's talking about she mentions Rick and Ethan and yes poor old Chandler what a minefield and These aren't warning bells or sirens going off. I don't know what would be. But he's just enamored with her. Yes, totally. And then he's, ah ah you know, that this is ah what you get to do all the things with none of the responsibility. It's every man's fantasy. That's right. and Ross's reaction. Yeah. He's like, no, no, actually. And then he thinks about it.
00:23:39
Speaker
Takes a few seconds and completely, yeah, it changes his moral character. It's kind of fantastic. Yeah, let see my favorite. Oh, I'm sorry. My favorite line in that scene, you know, they're talking about and they're kind of going around and saying, like, you know, that's, you know, what what they thought about it. And then Joey is like, you know, that's not OK, not OK. I need to know I'm the one that's dating more people. Like, man, it's so ridiculous, isn't it?
00:24:10
Speaker
ah But so honest to that's i mean that's the thing he's he's not i've read things about all your joe's terrible because he sleeps with all these women i can see that argument be also out seems brutally honest and it doesn't pretend to be anything else.
00:24:27
Speaker
Right. yeah You know, and he's a loyal friend and I'm sure there's instances throughout the series where he, well, there are some, like the woman with the wooden leg, where he does not, he does not you know cover himself in glory. Those moments definitely exist. But I do feel for the most part, he's just honest about who he is. Yes, yes.
00:24:49
Speaker
Well, let's see. We go from there and we're in the girls' apartment next. Rachel's all excited because she's cleaned it and poor old Monica getting stressed out about this green ottoman. Yes. Okay. So I laughed out loud and I've seen this episode quite a few times. Right. And I laughed so... There is something that's just so funny about Chandler because whenever they came in and Rachel's like, ta-da! And he's like, is this how we're greeting each other now? Okay.
00:25:19
Speaker
And to me, again, it's just a coincidence. It's nothing more, but I noticed that too. And I think to get a flashing forward spoiler alert when he kisses Monica and then realizes he has to kiss the other ones goodbye too. Oh, it's just a European thing. I know they're not related, but it's just, I love it when you can, in my head, I tie things together. Cause his little one liners are just, man, they make this show. And they're so quick.
00:25:47
Speaker
Yeah, they're so quick. And the thing about it is, you know, sometimes whenever you have really I think about Gilmore Girls, whenever people are going so quick, you feel like almost like it's so rehearsed. But like with him, ah he goes so quick, but there's something very genuine about it too. And it feels sporadic. It feels spontaneous. Yes, it's scripted.
00:26:12
Speaker
Now, I've never seen a single episode of Gilmore Girls, but it has come up more in my life in the past year than ever before. The amount of people who've said they're re-watching it. It's good. Friends of ours, well, know, Lena and CB. You must know Lena. Yeah, yeah. i They just went out to Los Angeles to watch um I saw that! I saw that they did that. Various people have brought up that it is like their show. So I don't know. I feel like I need to give it a shot. Kate, I don't think Kate's ever watched it.
00:26:48
Speaker
you You need to. Yeah. And it's, yeah, it's, it's a cute little series and it's, it's fun and, and everything, but they talk really fast. Like that's, that's the thing. Like they're just fast, fast, fast, fast and quick back and forth. And every once in a while it's like, uh, there was something that wasn't quite right with that one. You know, me I will put that on my to-do list.
00:27:14
Speaker
yeah um Definitely give that a watch. I love the way that the friend you know Monica Kent tries to defend her neurotic tendencies and then was it Ross and then Rachel and then once again Chandler comes in and starts talking about the beads of sweat on the glass and it just puts her over the edge. Yeah, I can be a cook. That's right. It's so well done. um And then Joey comes in with his big news. His big news, good old Joey.
00:27:44
Speaker
He's going to crack his way into show business. It's his big break. yeah This is where he comes in and says that he's going to be in the Al Pacino movie. And then they uncover that he's going to be the butt double. no i it's Al Pacino's one of those guys that obviously I know who he is. Everyone knows him. And I could name a couple of movies, but I don't, I just don't know much about him. And at the time of this filming, he would have been early 50s. So why in the world is Joey Tribbiani playing his butt double when he was born in 1940, 1990 with 50 and this episode was I think what, 92. So let's just say 52, 53. So why did the writers I wonder choose Al Pacino?
00:28:32
Speaker
You know, to be the guy that Joey was going to stand in for when there's such an age difference. Okay. Well, obviously because you're going to want a not wrinkly behind. I suppose if I was going to have a butt double, I'd choose one better than my own, I suppose. Right. And it's going to go younger, right? Yeah, absolutely. Okay. So let's see. Let's. Yeah.
00:28:58
Speaker
Because, yeah, I think about Al Pacino in the, dead oh what was the name of that movie where he played the devil? It was so scary. I would need to, I just, I'm terrible with anything to do with movies. I've seen shockingly few movies that everybody- Devil's Advocate, that movie. Devil's Advocate, yeah. Okay, so in 92,
00:29:25
Speaker
Oh, because he was in a whole lot of movies right then. Okay. So just a popular. Yeah. Like he had just done Godfather part three, Dick Tracy, the lot of the local, I don't know that one, but I've heard, I remember, I remember whenever Dick Tracy came out. Now I was too young to see it of of course, but it was a big deal. And then the Godfather was, Godfather part three was the same year, Frankie and Johnny and then Glengarry.
00:29:54
Speaker
Glenn Gary, Glenn Ross, Sin of a Woman was 92, Carlito's Way was 93. So there that's why, because he was he was real big right then. The top of the list of movies that I've never seen that I think I'll probably lose friends over is Godfather. For no reason, I've just never seen it and I feel that that is a one I need to see. What about Scarface? Never seen it.
00:30:21

I've just just not seen a bunch of movies that I feel everybody else has. Andy Kane once gave me a list of 10 movies that I have to watch. um And it's on my, a mutual friend of ours, it's on my board of work. But I did look up, I forgot to say, so Joey gives that kind of line about you're out of order, you're out of order. And I didn't know if that was from a movie or what that was from. But yeah, it was now put in line in a movie called And Justice For All in 1979.
00:30:52
Speaker
Okay. Yeah. Oh, there you go. Well, yeah, because obviously Al Pacino wasn't in it. I guess they've just used a name of somebody who was super popular. Yeah. You know, just to keep promoting or making this show maybe getting people's attention. Yeah. Because okay, so in 1990, he had three movies, he had a movie that came out in 91.
00:31:14
Speaker
two movies that came out in 92. In those three years, he had quite a few movies. He has a lot going on.

Revisiting DVD vs Streaming Differences

00:31:24
Speaker
All right. I like to watch a couple. But the next day, and again, I don't think in the one I watched, Joey mentions tweezers because I've even written down here in my notes, Joey needs to borrow moisturizer because today is the big day.
00:31:37
Speaker
So I sure there's something going on here between the two versions. Interesting. Yeah, because he came and he's like, I need moisturizer. And she was like, yeah, there's some in the bathroom. He's like, can I use tweezers too? I've got a rogue hair. She was like, let's go in there and use whatever and don't tell me.
00:31:56
Speaker
um Kate and I are going to rewatch this one anyway, so I'll be looking out for that as well. yeah I really think that's cut out. Now, one of my favorite scenes in the episode without a doubt or favorite moments is Chandler goat coming in, bursting into the bathroom.
00:32:15
Speaker
And again, foreshadowing in my own head, if nothing else, to Phoebe. It's in my eyes, my eyes, when she sees Monica and Chandler, right? Yes! Deliberate. Is that Lisa Kudrow giving some props to Matthew Perry? Who knows? Who knows? But I just, I forgot that he says that. I always associate that line with Lisa Kudrow.
00:32:39
Speaker
Right. In about five seasons. Uh-huh. Yeah. And I didn't know if that was actually from something else. I don't think so. I liked it in my head now. Think Matthew Perry delivered it that way and only the way he could. And then that was Lisa Kudrow giving a little yeah a little nod to him. I like to think in my little friend's universe mind that I've got going on. I love that. Yeah. Chandler's making Aurora breakfast. Evidently they spent the night together.
00:33:10
Speaker
Yes. Yeah. I did think of a trivia question, trying to notice all the things he grabbed, but the one we talk about or Monica talks about is the Teflon pan. And old Monica would tell you to wash the Teflon pan with. Yes. Which tells me she's been neurotic about trying to not be neurotic, which is just a brilliant trait that we're seeing coming out of Monica.
00:33:37
Speaker
Yes. Yes. Oh, and oh and so let's go ahead. Yeah. Oh, OK. It's OK. And so then the next scene is the one where we go to set. Yes. OK. Yes. So we go to set and Joey has to, you know, he's doing the show. Now you brought up the director. I'll be honest, I didn't recognize the director and most people wouldn't. Steve got in touch and said, do you know who that guy is? And I'm like, no.
00:34:07
Speaker
So that guy is a guy by the name of James Burrows, who directed quite a few episodes of Friends, including the pilot. um He's like a superstar director in Hollywood.
00:34:21
Speaker
um He directed 15 episodes of Friends, including the pilot, 32 episodes of Frasier, 75 episodes of Taxi, co-created Cheers and directed about 90% of the episodes. He is the sitcom guy and he is an uncredited extra in this episode, playing a director.
00:34:45
Speaker
um um But he didn't direct this episode, but I think it was just a bit of fun. They needed somebody to play a director. Why not put the most famous director of the time or sitcom director and of the eighties and nineties in the chair?
00:35:00
Speaker
ah Yeah, and he's credited for the episode on IMDB. yeah So as we've talked about, and as you listeners may have heard on previous episodes, you know, Steve's a wealth of knowledge on 90 sitcoms. So he told me quite like he is the guy, if you wanted your sitcom to be successful, you got in touch with James Burrow. And he didn't direct ah like with friends he did 15 I think most of them are stacked at the beginning to help get these shows off the ground um and then he felt he could kind of pass them off I believe I might be wrong on that but he was he was the director to get on your show if you wanted it to be successful how cool yeah I had no idea yeah he's tied to a lot of stuff yeah he's yeah he's um he is the guy of the time
00:35:47
Speaker
But um yeah, poor old Joey, they have to cut twice, one because he's clenching. And you know, I'm not one who would desperately want to have seen a full nude scene. But how Joey portrayed quiet desperation through his butt, I would love to have seen. Like what in the world was he doing that caused them to cut?
00:36:11
Speaker
I just love that. Apparently, um I read this just before we started recording. You can see in the you can see the shadow of Joey on the shower wall. You can see his shorts. Yeah, i I saw that too. Did you see that? I didn't notice that, but I just just read it before we ah started recording. But poor old Joey seems to have blown it. But then we go to Chandler's bedroom and he's lying there with Aurora and he is just infatuated with her.
00:36:40
Speaker
But now she, in addition to Rick and Ethan, we we are introduced sort of to Andrew, the new guy. And we we feel bad. I feel bad for Chandler. I need to. Not feel no not not known long, but he's a good guy. He's a one-woman guy, I think. And um kind of he's kind of head over heels for this woman, but she is done she's on a different page altogether. Yeah.
00:37:08
Speaker
In the last episode ah where where Chandler was smoking was maybe a couple of episodes ago now. um Steve got in touch again, Steve, and notes there was a Toronto Blue Jays hat in his booth.
00:37:22
Speaker
at work. I don't know if you're in the scene where he's smoking and he blows the air conditioner or the air, all that stuff. Well, he's got three different baseball teams, baseball caps in his bedroom. So I need to deep dive into Matthew Perrier, but he's got, I think it's a yank. He's definitely a Yankees cap. I know that logo. Then one looks like possibly the Padres from San Diego. It's difficult to read.
00:37:46
Speaker
And then the other one, you can't read bits the color of the New York Mets. So I'm guessing it's those three. So I don't know if all these different teams are something to do with Matthew Perry. I've read his autobiography, which is brilliant. I don't remember. So good. I said to Kate, I think we should do like a ah special episode sometime, like discussing that book and discussing his life. like I would love that. Right. Just a little episode in honor of Matthew Perry, I think is because that kind of brought this podcast to life was the thirtieth anniversary of friends and the one year anniversary of his passing. Got Steve and I talking and some other friends talking and then us talking about doing this. But yeah, there's three different baseball teams caps which might mean nothing but I'm looking at these little details thinking, you know, are these deliberate?
00:38:35
Speaker
But what's your feeling on like Chance? I feel like everything kind of is though. yeah Don't you? I do too. um And somebody somewhere has got to have examined the interiors of Frasier. Frasier. So I was thinking about this, ah there's an Instagram page called Frasier interiors, where somebody has done that and they've looked at all the pieces in Frasier's apartment and where what they actually are and where you can buy them. and somebody must have done this with friends because there's too many amazing things going on in the decor of the apartments and Central Park. Yeah, that is very true. What's your take on Chandler and Aurora and that whole situation? Yeah, it's it's sad. I mean, it really is. And whenever Chandler is talking about how, you know, there's two guys, yeah and and then the one
00:39:27
Speaker
i I don't know. it just There's the one that's saying, shut up, you know quit thinking about it. And then the other one that's saying it's too hard. And then he talks about the Grinch and all of that. Yeah, because Taylor's a good guy. He's a good guy. And this is probably pretty new territory for him. Yes. And and that's not the way that his his brain thinks.
00:39:53
Speaker
you know like yeah It had to break up with Janet or Janice. Janice had to break up. Well, I mean, Phoebe had to break up with Janice. But, you know, he he he seems like somebody who wants to do the right thing and and have those morally sound decisions. ecor again jump ahead We'll talk about, you know, when Kathy comes into the picture.
00:40:22
Speaker
You can see his moral compass is, yes you know, struggles big time. so yeah on um And then we go forward to the girls' apartment where Chandler tells them he's broken up with Aurora.
00:40:34
Speaker
Um, it's it's kind of sad because then joey comes in and he's been fired have But but I thought it was so funny where ver ross is like you dumped her like good for you You dumped her a badge of honor and he calls him big guy. Yeah Felt like a big guy moment. Yeah Yeah, and then joey comes in and he's sad and um Yeah, but and they're all so supportive. Was it Phoebe, I think, talks a bit about it. No, you know, this is not your big break.
00:41:08
Speaker
Yeah, this isn't it. You just need to think about that kid that one day will be like, I get to play be Joey ass. Right. And it's like, yeah, that's right. And you know, it's good on it. Good on supporting their friends. Good on Phoebe. yeah Yes, yes. And when I see the kind of ends with Monica, she's going to bed, but leaves her shoes on the living room floor. And uh... And a cooke. Yeah, she's a cooke. That's right, Kittle, bruh. Such a great word, isn't it?
00:41:38
Speaker
it's ah And I love that she's lying awake thinking about it. like Nobody would know she moved them, but obviously she realizes she's a bit neurotic and crazy about these things and has that internal struggle.
00:41:51
Speaker
Yes. And then the fact that she's laying there and can't fall asleep because she's thinking about those shoes being out there. So then just go get the shoes, right? But then she doesn't want to do that because then she's thinking about everybody else. And now they're going to be thinking about what she's doing. Like I it's and but with things like that, I get Monica man. right if You you are to your piano know, don't you yes spiraling at its finest.
00:42:18
Speaker
Right. And it's so much of its internal. Yeah. She's worried about what her friends would think, but she's obviously got this internal struggle that I think is just wonderful. Wonderful to witness and watch. Yeah. so Yeah. Then it kind of comes together with her yeah being, you know, lying awake at night, dealing with all of this. And I think that's the final scene of this episode. No. No. Well, it might be on the stream. What is it on the DVD?
00:42:46
Speaker
on the ah So it ends where you go back out in the living room and the other five are there and then they start singing the song from the very beginning from the play.
00:42:58
Speaker
You mentioned that, and then I was thinking, I don't remember that. that's yeah So sometimes I've noticed on the streams, you know when it gets to the very end, it will say, you know next episode in five, four, and it does cut off the very end sometimes. But obviously, this is at least the third indiscretion between the DVDs, because that is definitely not there. It ends on the max stream with Monica lying awake, sort of saucer-eyed, thinking about this stuff.
00:43:27
Speaker
Yeah, no, they're just saying it's probably 30 seconds, but they're dancing around and like Chandler and um Ross are like dancing, like ballroom dancing around and they're all laughing and then ah Rachel throws up. i I don't know. I was gonna ask and then I couldn't figure out if it was paper or popcorn.
00:43:52
Speaker
but she kind of throws some stuff up in the air. I am going to dust off my DVD player this evening and we'll get this watched. It's so interesting how different this one is and we'll need to keep a little finger on this pulse as we move forward and see what things are different.
00:44:11
Speaker
See, and I was just thinking that the opening credits, the scenes that they plug in for the opening credits might be different. But yeah, there's all kinds of inconsistencies with this episode. Yeah, interesting to see. One thing that's not going to be inconsistent is my my something new for this episode.

Rachel's Haircut Cultural Impact

00:44:30
Speaker
Jennifer Aniston has a new haircut.
00:44:32
Speaker
and it is the Rachel. It's the haircut that brought so much attention to the show. I recently read a book that was written by just a fan of Friends and he had interviewed several stylists, including the one that did the haircut, you know the person behind the scenes at Warner Brothers.
00:44:51
Speaker
um or whoever it was at the time, um because people would write into the show saying, you know, who did this and what do we ask for? And I think they would sort of give some details to the person asking who could then give it to the hairdresser. um But they were saying they had people fly out to Los Angeles from all over the country just to get this haircut, no expense spared. They wanted the Rachel done by the same hairdresser who did Rachel's. ah um And then it talks about various, you know, high end hairdressers in Los Angeles would did it for a little bit, but then refused. Because it didn't, you know, they didn't want to be just doing the same haircut for all these different people. um That's not what they do. They do, you know, unique individual hairstyles for different people. um But I remember that, and I'm and
00:45:45
Speaker
I'm a guy with short hair. I remember that being a cultural sense. say you know It was on magazines and things. The Rachel haircut was was quite something at the time, I believe. Uh-huh. It was. Yeah. And then it kind of comes back into style every so often. Right. Yeah, these things tend to go in a cycle. But it's very interesting they've decided to change her look a little bit, just what, five or six episodes in?
00:46:15
Speaker
yeah I like to think that this is deliberate, ah you know, moving her character forward and you look stepping into this next stage of her life. Yes. Yeah. um So, ah you know, after I've done that, I thought about who's my Gunther Central Park? Who's my my favorite character this week? And I've got to be honest, I don't feel it was a particularly big or strong episode necessarily for any characters. But I really enjoyed Joey. I enjoyed seeing him acting in the beginning. but I can't wait to see this scene in the sales office. But quite a lot of ups and downs. um you know My favorite moment is definitely Chandler. My eyes, my eyes. But I thought overall in the episode, like I said, not a particularly moving or brilliant one for anyone. But Joey would have it for me. What do you think?
00:47:10
Speaker
I agree with that. I mean, it it was his. ah and Not it was his crack into. into show business right and into the movie business but um it wasn't his big break but yeah i think so i think that's a good choice i um you know i've noticed though that we always or each episode that we've done it's like well there's not really one standout character but and i like that though but i think that was probably pretty intentional because i want to
00:47:48
Speaker
you know we're gathering so much information here at the beginning you don't really want one of them to be the star that's a very good point it'll be interesting to see as the show progresses season to season if we do find that you and i even if they're different have more de defined Gunther Central Parks, you know our character of the week. As you know everyone's established, nobody's going to feel left out. All the characters know what they're about. It'll be interesting to see how that develops. That's a very, very good thought. I hadn't thought of that.
00:48:20
Speaker
Yeah, but yeah, I don't know. I think I might say Chandler, actually. And yeah, just thinking about his whole little fling with Aurora and how he was trying to be open, but he decided to stay true to who he is. You know, and I think that I don't know, it just makes him a little more endearing. It does. Yeah, you see a really nice sight of his character.
00:48:47
Speaker
So I think that's a very good choice. But on that note, as this podcast grows, we're hoping to add some more sections, get some more
