Weekend Recap and 'Friends' Anticipation
00:00:07
Speaker
Well, hello and welcome to this week's episode of the Purple Door Podcast, a friend's rewatch pod. I am one of your hosts, Alistair. I think I know my own name. Oh, it's been a long day alongside Deanne. Deanne, how are you?
00:00:23
Speaker
I'm doing awesome, Mel. I'm doing great. We were just chatting, got a lot of work done at the house this weekend, and I'm excited to to talk about some friends.
Mac and Cheese Festival Highlights
00:00:35
Speaker
Yeah, we absolutely we spent this afternoon, we went to the Macaroni and Cheese Festival in Denton, which was tons of fun. How fun. Yeah, we'd never done it before, and part of my trying to do things, but instead of saying I don't have the time, is, you know what, stuff like that, instead of saying and we'll do it next year, let's go this year. Kate had tickets, so we went, and we had lots of fun.
00:00:58
Speaker
Okay, well, So I need to know a little bit more about a macaroni and cheese festival. All right, so we didn't know what to expect, but basically there were three locations, three different bars, and at each bar there was maybe 10 different local companies represented, usually, or most of them were local restaurants, but there were some, like there was a bookshop and other places, um and they all brought their own macaroni and cheese.
00:01:30
Speaker
that somebody who works there has a special recipe or um the recipe is influenced by what that restaurant sells. Okay. So basically you go to one location, there's, like i said, between maybe five and 10 restaurants uh you places represented and you get given a little cup from each one and you try all the different macaroni and cheeses and you let it digest and then you walk to the second location do the same and then to the third location and then you vote for the winner on white which one you thought was best
00:02:05
Speaker
Okay, and? So, I must say, we know our favorite, both Kate and I agreed. You will know of Komodo Local. There's a restaurant. Oh, yeah. Yeah, just off the Denton Square. They did a crab rangoon pasta that had something crunchy in it. I forget what it was.
Festival's Community Impact
00:02:24
Speaker
Little wontons. Oh, it was delicious. But I've got to tell you... um that That ended up being a both of our favorites. But before that one, there's a quite a fancy establishment, Kate and I have never been, called Queenies just off the square.
00:02:42
Speaker
I don't know if you've ever been to Queenies, Deanne. I've not even heard of it. Yeah, it's it's kind of hidden. It's ah it's quite ah you know an expensive, we'll just see expensive, steakhouse that is right off the square. But unless you know it's there, you don't really pass it. it's It's out of our price range.
00:03:00
Speaker
Anyway, they made a breakfast macaroni and cheese. which sounds odd, but had this seasoned sausage and egg and absolutely delicious.
00:03:12
Speaker
Like you wouldn't think, but it was really good. um All the money, you buy tickets in advance, all the money raised goes to paying off the lunch accounts of Denton ISD students who owe money.
00:03:25
Speaker
Oh, that's great. You know, it's i think I think it's usually around 15,000 that gets raised. and every penny goes to help kids out at this time of year. So very, very good cause.
00:03:39
Speaker
um But yeah, we had two or three hours. All in all, we took our time.
Festival Encounters and Party Food Preferences
00:03:44
Speaker
Well, we bumped into Sylvia Naples. Oh, my goodness. Yeah, hadn't seen her in a while. A mutual friend of ours, we hadn't seen her while.
00:03:52
Speaker
But yeah, a lot of fun. i would highly recommend it. And it it wasn't too busy at all. Like, it's a very leisurely, leisurely thing. There you go. That's awesome. Yeah. um But I don't know if at the two parties that are in this episode, they even had macaroni and cheese come to think of it.
00:04:13
Speaker
and No. That's my attempt at a segue. Salmon and salmon mousse. Yeah. And a flan. Yeah. Not necessarily my kind of party food, I must say.
00:04:27
Speaker
Yeah. You might not be fancy on the inside. That's right. That's right. Well, let's see. i think i've I think I've got about a dozen questions for you. How are you looking this week?
00:04:39
Speaker
Oh, man. I've only got eight. All right. Well, wow why don't you start off?
'Friends' Trivia Challenge
00:04:46
Speaker
Well, I can, like, every week I think, what's the best way to do this? I don't think it matters.
00:04:51
Speaker
um Yeah. Should I start because I've got the most? Yes. You start. You go first. All right. All right. Well, where does Chandler say his cousin went on a football scholarship?
00:05:02
Speaker
To hell. Indeed. Indeed. Yes. ah good line A good line. good line. That was funny. Okay. Whenever we see Gunther at the party, what color is his tie?
00:05:18
Speaker
That's kind of ugly, but whatever. ah Is it red? It is. yeah Nice job. I think I remember trying to see what was on, if there was something on it but I think it's just an ugly pattern, to be honest.
00:05:32
Speaker
Well, no, it's just red. His shirt is a terrible pattern, black and white. Yes. That's right.
00:05:44
Speaker
All right, my question two for you. What famous person spoke at Rachel's sister's graduation? Bishop Tutu? Bishop Tutu indeed, yes.
00:05:56
Speaker
Nicely done. Okay, is is that a famous person? he's He's quite a famous bishop. like he's a and not he's not um I'm trying to think of another one.
00:06:08
Speaker
But he's made a lot of very big speeches, usually related to Africa, I believe, and the plight of many of the people in Africa. um um but's He's one of the top bishops in the Anglican Church, if memory serves me right.
00:06:24
Speaker
hu Yeah, des Desmond Tutu is his name. um And just just famous for being um very well very well spoken. I'm not sure if he's still alive, actually.
00:06:37
Speaker
um Now I feel like I have to look it up. um Yeah, I have no idea who that is. I thought that was just a random funny name. i Yeah, head of the Anglican church. He passed away about four years ago.
00:06:52
Speaker
um Dang. Yeah. um Just, he he was quite, if I remember rightly, during apartheid and things in South Africa, was quite an important figure at that time.
00:07:05
Speaker
Yeah. Archbishop, I think it was Archbishop, Desmond Tutu. That's who he is. Well, there you So there you go. a little what a history lesson or something. i don't know.
00:07:17
Speaker
That's who it was. All right. So, What is Dr. Green's preferred drink? Not your dad, Dr. Green, and not you, soon-to-be Dr. Green, but Dr. Green on the show. That Dr. Green. um That, I believe, is a Scotch Neat No Ice.
00:07:40
Speaker
There you go. Very good. We'll get into that when Ross has has that later. I do enjoy that scene a whole bunch. Okay. All right, I've got two-parter for you.
00:07:53
Speaker
When Rachel's parents arrive at Monica's party, what color coat is each one wearing? oh um Okay, the mom is wearing pink.
00:08:05
Speaker
She is indeed. Yes, and then the dad, it's it's a sailing coat. Is it navy blue or is it red?
00:08:19
Speaker
I'm going to give it to you. It's red. He's got a blue and white shirt on underneath. It does all of it has a kind of nautical theme. Nautical Yes. Yeah, which ties into you're walking, you're walking, you're walking a boat.
00:08:32
Speaker
yeah ah Yes. Yes. All right. How? Oh. Okay, wait. What did Mrs. Green spend $12,000 on? thousand dollars on
00:08:47
Speaker
And Mrs. Green, not your Mrs. Green, not your mom, Mrs. Green, but Mrs. Green the show. But Mrs. Green, different Mrs. Green. Well, I'm going to guess it's, well, I've written down one of my questions, and I'm guessing that one of us has either added or omitted a zero.
00:09:04
Speaker
How much did Mrs. Green spend on bonsai trees? And I've got 1,200. Oh, and it might be 1,200. Hang on. It might
First Car Memories and Stories
00:09:13
Speaker
be 1,000. I put it, no, it's 1,200.
00:09:16
Speaker
later on in my notes i put 1200 sorry no yes quite all right yeah yes yes uh maybe by today's standards 1200 exactly you just adjusted for inflation and i appreciate that i did yes it's important to me really it
00:09:40
Speaker
All right. Well, on the on the theme of colored coats that I had in the previous question at the party, Phoebe is wearing a dress that is predominantly what two colors? And there was a ah pink and green.
00:09:53
Speaker
Pink and green. And just for a bonus point, why do you think that at this time of year, um not really the time of year, there's something happening soon and that dress stood out to me?
00:10:07
Speaker
I'm trying to think how to give you a fair hint because that wasn't fair. Is it Easter? It's not Easter. Something happens in the next couple of weeks. This is a very important deal to It's Thanksgiving.
00:10:18
Speaker
It's not... Well, it is, but something's happening that my Mrs. Green is very excited about. what Christmas? Not Christmas. What? There's something coming out at the movies.
00:10:30
Speaker
Something coming out in the movies. Wicked. Wicked. and So all I've seen is pink and green stuff. And when I saw that, I thought said luke that looks like a Wicked dress.
00:10:41
Speaker
Oh, there you go. Yeah, sorry. That was a very long tangent to something not very interesting. But there you have it.
00:10:51
Speaker
I love it. All right. and So what was Chandler's regime to help him handle his parents' divorce? Oh, I know exactly you're talking about. Let me think. It was a a regiment of... I feel like I've got... is Is there three parts to it?
00:11:09
Speaker
Nope. Just Okay, is it self-loathing and wetting the bed? it's still closed. Ah.
00:11:19
Speaker
You know, I don't think I have it in my notes. What you got for me? Denial. Denial. but And wetting the bed. Oh, denial of wetting the bed. All right.
00:11:31
Speaker
Well, I am going to ask you, what did Ross get Rachel for her birthday?
00:11:38
Speaker
It's my question number six, earrings. Earrings, indeed. That she can return. Yes, which she's perhaps more excited about than just the earrings themselves.
00:11:50
Speaker
okay Okay. What was Rachel's birthday wish?
00:11:58
Speaker
Oh, that the the like the flan would get ruined or something. said the yeah Yes, very end. Yes, yes. I do love that, the way the ball lands in.
00:12:11
Speaker
All right. Let's see. I'm going to jump to not the order of my questions because you've already mentioned this. What does Ross warn Mrs. Green to steer clear of?
00:12:24
Speaker
you didn' You mentioned it a different context.
00:12:31
Speaker
What does Ross warn Mrs. Green steer clear Yep, they're at the party in Monica's apartment.
00:12:48
Speaker
Let's think. He's just come back. He's been away for a few minutes. ah Trying see what other hint I can give you to nudge you in the right direction. Dang. Um.
00:13:00
Speaker
You mentioned this when I said that there was, I didn't think there was macaroni and cheese at the party.
00:13:08
Speaker
Oh, the bathroom, the salmon mousse. Yes, dear Claire, the salmon mousse. That's it. Yes. I feel like we've talked about salmon mousse before. Just the idea of it is gross.
00:13:21
Speaker
Yeah, I feel like we have discussed ah fish consistency at some point. Perhaps it was with the moklet or something. I don't i don't quite remember. Yeah, I don't... Okay, so who does the girl at the party think Chandler is?
00:13:42
Speaker
That's my next question. That would be Dennis. Mm-hmm. Very good. All right, let's see. What kind of doctor can we deduce Dr. Green is?
00:13:53
Speaker
He's a heart surgeon. That's exactly what I've got. I'm not sure if we know that for sure, but obviously we can... The world of vascular surgery. Yes. That's not a game.
00:14:05
Speaker
Not a game, Ross. That's right. All right. So what color are Monica, Rachel, Chandler, and Phoebe wearing?
00:14:18
Speaker
My goodness. All right.
00:14:24
Speaker
ah is Is Monica wearing a black dress?
00:14:37
Speaker
so yeah phoebe does is phoebe is not wearing predominantly this color but the other three are like monica rachel and chandler all all wearing predominantly the same color oh the same color okay my that the answer there's only one answer i see one color what is color is it green It is green. I just remember Chandler having kind of like a dark olive green shirt.
00:15:07
Speaker
And then Rachel has the weird chameleon green dress. And then Monica has the light green dress. And then Phoebe's wearing the half green, half pink.
00:15:18
Speaker
That's right. yeah That's right. Well, speaking of green, who wears glasses like Dr. Green?
00:15:28
Speaker
Oh, dang. Because he says that these are very popular. yep Even, oh gosh. who
00:15:44
Speaker
o it why It's one of those people I know their name, but I couldn't have told you what from. Oh, is it like ah Hank somebody? Like it's a singer.
00:15:56
Speaker
Yeah, it's a singer, songwriter. I think everyone knows his name, but not many us would be able to say, all right, here's some songs. Dang. Maybe I'm wrong there, but that's just kind of what I'm thinking.
00:16:11
Speaker
Yeah, I can't think of what his name is right now. That would be Neil Sedaka. Oh, there you go. Yeah, I can tell you what he sings, but yeah. no but But we know his name. ah Definitely one of those guys.
00:16:25
Speaker
All right, I've got three left. Do you have one left for me? No, I'm all out. All right, well, let me fire these three quickly at you. this one I'm ready. There's one I'm really glad you didn't ask me because I've been excited about it.
00:16:39
Speaker
um But first of all, why does Monica want the boys to keep the noise down? What's she about to do?
00:16:49
Speaker
She comes through and she's like, you need to keep it down. We're about to... Oh, they're about to play Boggle. They are indeed. Yes, they are.
00:17:01
Speaker
Second last question. What does Mrs. Green leave on the table for Monica? Oh, her 10 verbs. Her 10 verbs. Let's see if we can make it three for three of these extra questions. All right.
00:17:15
Speaker
What five nicknames was Chandler given when his parents were divorcing? Tiger. Yep. Champ. Yep. Chief.
00:17:25
Speaker
Yep. Sport. And even a governor. look at you that are on fire. Look at you go. That is yeah good going.
00:17:37
Speaker
I love that scene. Yes. That scene is so good to me. Like, I love it. Yeah. yeah it's It's a really nice moment. I'm looking forward to us um to us getting there. But we are starting off.
00:17:54
Speaker
In the diner. I know you enjoy this diner a lot. um I do. I love this diner. Yeah. and i hope we um I don't really know how much of it we get to see. I know we see more of it.
00:18:08
Speaker
Julio, Pete. But it is a yeah great location. So the more diner, the better, as far as I'm concerned. ah Same. Same. Oh, and i i can you mentioned Julio last time, and I had forgotten about him.
00:18:22
Speaker
But yes, I can't remember, or I
'Three's Company' and 'Friends' References
00:18:24
Speaker
can't wait for it. The empty base. Right. It's so pretentious. Yes. It's just, just so funny. Yes. It's so good.
00:18:34
Speaker
ah i Yes. He's but so such a poet. He is a poet and he doesn't know it. Um, except was but they're talking about Rachel's party and Monica.
00:18:48
Speaker
Monica wants to poach things. Now, I don't know how you feel about this. i'm not There's nothing that really gets better by poaching. I'm thinking there's fish and there's eggs. Yeah.
00:19:00
Speaker
I'm not one for whom poaching is really something that happens in the kitchen, I don't think. Okay. So I don't even know what it means. I know that I like a poached egg.
00:19:12
Speaker
I know i do because I because that's what you have on a Benedict, right? Yes. yeah Okay. And I had never even had an eggs benedict until just a few years ago.
00:19:26
Speaker
And my friend Christina was like, I really think you would like it. And I said, okay. And so I tried it and it was delicious. And now anytime that I go to that restaurant, that's what I get.
00:19:39
Speaker
Yeah, there's no reason why it wouldn't be delicious. It's essentially, I always think of it as like sort shallow frying something, but instead of oil, it's water. So it's like a very shallow boiling. So you're cooking the egg in shallow boiling water.
00:19:53
Speaker
Same with the fish. same There may be more to it than that, but in my head, um and that's that that's just what poaching is. But yeah, it's not something that ever happens in our household.
00:20:05
Speaker
oh Yeah, no, know not at our house either. But the rest of the gang want pizza and beers, like low-key, have some fun. I guess they don't want it to be special.
00:20:17
Speaker
But my one of my favorite lines in this and entire episode is right here at the very beginning. Whenever they're trying to, yeah, like get Monica to, you know, just loosen up and have a party.
00:20:33
Speaker
and she' is like And whenever Phoebe says, I think fancy parties are only fun if you're fancy on the inside. And I'm just not sure that we are. Right, yes.
00:20:44
Speaker
Like you really got to dig deep. Yes. Well, and I was like, I feel that in my bones. Right. Yeah, I just, I'm not real sure that we're that fancy.
00:20:57
Speaker
Right, right. I mean, you might try maybe for a couple of hours of an evening, you have to act fancy, but deep down, we're not fancy. Yeah.
'Friends' Food-Themed Gathering Idea
00:21:09
Speaker
It reminds me of some friends of mine and with the cheese, and we have cheese parties.
00:21:14
Speaker
always want to be very fancy at the beginning. the Right. know? And then... and then And then it's it's just fun. It just ascends into us having, everyone having fun.
00:21:27
Speaker
fun yes. It's much better. It's much better than Yes. I want to have a food committee at my next party, though. I think that sounds fun.
00:21:38
Speaker
um we You know what? umm and I know it exists as a friend's cookbook out there. Maybe we need to have an evening of friends food. Oh, that could be fun.
00:21:49
Speaker
That could be fun. Just a good excuse to hang out in parts to get together. um Now, I do have a question, and you will remember better than I. In this next scene, a car is mentioned. Have we discussed first cars?
00:22:08
Speaker
size well I don't know if we have. I don't know why, Ella. I don't remember that we have, but it seems like something we might have, but I don't remember that discussion happening. like Yeah, because I have no idea what your first car was.
00:22:24
Speaker
Okay. well what So the reason I ask, it's dropped in very subtly, um but Rachel says, know, they're talking about... um Rachel's party. And then she comes in, she's been her sister's graduation.
00:22:38
Speaker
And she says, Oh, about what she'll do for a, is it a ah Celica? So Celica and I went back and re-listing. So I'm like, are they talking about the car?
00:22:49
Speaker
And they must be. um And, you know, loosen the purse strings, cardiovascular Sergeant Dr. Green. I don't think a Toyota Celica was anything, you know, particularly, um,
00:23:03
Speaker
particularly fancy. And I was thinking, I know they offered Rachel a car, or I think if she would move back home, you know, right at the very beginning of the series, but I don't remember what kind of car it was.
00:23:15
Speaker
um Or if they said what kind of car it was, maybe they didn't. Yeah, I don't know. But eie what was your first car? My first car was a Chevrolet Corsica and it was teal and it was beautiful.
00:23:32
Speaker
It was a little four-door thing you roll down.
Rachel's Party Chaos in 'Friends'
00:23:37
Speaker
you know It had the crank wheels. and you know it it was base model, but it was so pretty.
00:23:44
Speaker
It was the best color. The best color. I love it. wow i Did it did the last you a couple of years? It did. lasted me through high school, and then it lasted in me almost to the end of college.
00:24:02
Speaker
But I ended up blowing out. I don't even know. It just didn't go anymore. I think I blew up the engine. I don't know what I did. But it was it was a good car.
00:24:14
Speaker
it it was a good car. It went a lot of places. Good. That's nice. you You can hear that you've got some good memories with that car in your voice. Yeah. so yeah I love that.
00:24:27
Speaker
m What was your first car? So, I mean, I didn't own one in Scotland. My family didn't have a car. So when I moved here, um i remember bought it for $1,000. It was 1970 Ford Ranger, um which was and a bigger truck than Rangers are now. It's more like an F-150.
00:24:49
Speaker
But the thing was, I say it was falling apart. It was fine as long as you didn't let idle. So, which is a small part. So don't stop at a light.
00:25:00
Speaker
So if you stop at a light, I had to drive two footed because as soon as you slow down, you needed to keep your foot on the accelerator to revving the engine. Otherwise it would die. Oh, wow.
00:25:12
Speaker
So I got quite good at driving with two feet, which is not great. And B, probably i not sure it's illegal, but it's just not good. um that thing lasted for a it wasn't bad it was a year or two that thing lasted and i bought a f-150 um which i loved that truck it was a it was a model called a flare side and think and it just it kind of looked like a really old truck that wasn't i love the way it looked and somebody smashed into it and it got oh i was very sad about that
00:25:45
Speaker
um I felt more sad. The lady, i won't go down this rabbit hole too much. was going down I-35 near downtown Dallas. And lady had bought a really expensive sports car and lost control of it.
00:25:58
Speaker
And then went across traffic and sort of T-boned me in the side. And I was fine. And she remarkably was fine because she was in a very low profile sports car. And she pulled over and she was a lovely lady, but she was so upset because she just bought this.
00:26:13
Speaker
And I think it was too powerful because she just lost control of it. Wow. So, i mean, I was fine. Sad about my truck, but I really felt bad for that lady because she was heartbroken.
00:26:27
Speaker
ah But she was fine. i was fine. Everyone was okay. That's the main thing. But yeah, Ford Ranger that you had to drive with two feet was how I got i got my start in driving.
00:26:40
Speaker
um but they're planning Rachel's party and Joey, he keeps saying that people can't come because they steal stuff. um The whole thing is kind of sleazy, but I love his reaction where he's like, all right, I didn't think you guys would buy that.
00:26:55
Speaker
yeah It's very, very funny. Yeah. ah Poor old Rachel is dealing with the realities of divorce. Our parents were fighting. Desmond Tutu had to shush them.
00:27:08
Speaker
um But Monica's already invited her mom to the party. um So that we we can kind of see where this one's going, I think.
00:27:20
Speaker
Yeah. um Now, if you have written a flan, that's what Monica has made. We we come over to the girls. not like that. I have tried a bite of it once.
00:27:32
Speaker
And so thank you. That is not for me. Yeah. i I kind of feel like I must have tried it, but i don't remember when. Yeah. think my mom used to make flans.
00:27:44
Speaker
I think I'm going to need to ask her about that. I think so. It's neat. And then that's the one where they like use the flame to, to make the top crispy.
00:27:58
Speaker
To make it like a little crispy glaze on top. yeah Yeah, but no, no. That's gross. No. Now, I've got a question for you again here, because this is something I suspect might be related to a television show I've never seen.
00:28:15
Speaker
um Rachel's dad arrives unexpectedly, then her mother arrives. And she says, what would Jack and Chrissy do? Is that right? Okay, put that in my notes, and I should have asked you because you would not have gotten it.
00:28:30
Speaker
would not. It's Three's Company. Okay, I must tell you, I'm sitting here in the office, Kate's at her desk. Nodding away. She knows exactly what that's all about. of course she does.
00:28:42
Speaker
Of course she does, yes. You got Mr. Roper. See, they've made a lot of comments in the series so far to this point about Three's Company.
00:28:53
Speaker
Right. I feel that this this show has come up at least a couple of times now. Are you familiar with that show at all? I've never seen it. I know nothing about it I just know that there was a television show called Three's Company.
00:29:07
Speaker
Okay, and so what it was is they they had an apartment and um it was, oh shoot, I can't think of it. I had his name and now it's out. Ritter, whatever, somebody Ritter.
00:29:23
Speaker
um and But he played Jack and then he had two roommates and like partway through the series they switched out but a brunette um and then a blonde.
00:29:36
Speaker
And the reason... And Mr. Roper and Mrs. Roper are the landlords. And the only reason that he's allowed to live there is because they believe he he's gay.
00:29:50
Speaker
But it's very on the down low. Like, I didn't realize that there was that level... and i didn't understand that whenever I was younger.
00:30:02
Speaker
But then you go back and you watch it now and you're like, oh... Mr. Roper thinks that Jack's gay and that's why it's okay that he's living in the same apartment with these girls.
00:30:14
Speaker
Right. And so it's just a whole lot of shenanigans and, you know, trying to keep up the facade and then, yeah you know, just. silly inappropriate things that I didn't understand whenever I was younger either of course yeah all these different layers um John Ritter John Ritter who that passed away quite very young age 54 that was a 20 something years ago Yeah.
00:30:43
Speaker
Yeah. Very sad indeed. But yeah, it's one of those things. I think I just know from the legend that is that show. I know it was an important show, but yeah, never seen it. But yeah, that's at least the third reference I think we've come across.
00:30:57
Speaker
Yes. And there's a lot of very funny physical comedy in that show as well. Right. And then the fashion is awesome because it's, you know.
00:31:09
Speaker
what, 70s, 70s, whenever that was. But, yeah. All right. Three's company. i've got ah another ah yet and I've got lots of questions for you this week. I fake i found as I was watching this episode, um the next scene, the guests are getting funneled into the apartments. Chandler's leading all the girls into there, one and all the boys into the other one, which is such a joy move, and I kind of love that Chandler's doing it instead.
00:31:38
Speaker
um Rachel and Ross come up the stairs and, you know, thank you for the earrings and the dinner. She goes into the girl's apartment. There's the surprise. She admits immediately that she knew.
00:31:50
Speaker
yeah I was curious. I wasn't sure how I would react. Let's say your dear husband, Joseph, threw you a surprise party. Would you tell him immediately that you knew? or would you just try and you thank you for the surprise? I had no idea.
00:32:04
Speaker
What you think? Yeah, Okay, I would want to know, and I would do a great job at making everybody think that I didn't know, but I would not tell him in the moment at all. I don't know that I would ever tell him that I knew.
00:32:23
Speaker
It just felt a little odd to me that obviously these people, all of them, really Monica, well, all of them, they've all gone to effort. And to immediately kind of go, oh, yeah, I knew.
00:32:34
Speaker
I don't know. Just bugged me little. And wasn't sure if that was a fair way to feel or not. Okay. Well, here's what's interesting.
00:32:46
Speaker
Is because you would think, ah like, okay, so maybe it's because she's always honest or something like that. But she just told Ross, I love the earrings. They're perfect.
00:32:59
Speaker
And then he's like, you can exchange it with you. Oh, that's great. So then that was a lie. But then why? you know what I mean? she I don't know.
00:33:10
Speaker
Yeah. It just, it's something about it. Didn't sit quite right with me. Mm hmm. Yeah, because she's a little bit of a brat. And there you go. A little bit, a little bit.
00:33:22
Speaker
um But she finds out both, Rachel finds out both her parents are there. She finds out there's flan. The whole thing is falling apart. um And the I mean, the rest of this show basically goes back and forth from the apartments all the way to the hallway at the end.
00:33:40
Speaker
um and lots of very, very quick scenes.
Character Dynamics and Humorous Moments
00:33:44
Speaker
I'd like say Chandler has his friend who thinks his name is Dennis. ah Curious to know how that happened.
00:33:52
Speaker
I do love the joy. I mean, just the absurdity. He's playing volleyball in Chandler's room. Chandler's room is tiny. How they're playing volleyball in there. um yeah Absurd.
00:34:05
Speaker
um yeah du And why in Chandler's room? but Why not Joey's? I don't know. it's yeah And kind this volleyball makes a recurring, you know, this it just keeps going. This isn't a one-off joke, and I kind of love that.
00:34:21
Speaker
Yes. And then the girls' apartment, Monica, they're playing boring games, but you best make sure that the pen cap gets clicked back on. Oh, my gosh.
00:34:32
Speaker
Yes. Yeah, that's just any joy that could have been happening over there gets to get sucked out completely by Monica's neurotic behavior. ah yeah her Her controlling and whatever.
00:34:47
Speaker
Because, yeah, and could you imagine, i i don't know, I do not enjoy being put on the spot right on things like that.
00:34:58
Speaker
So write down your most embarrassing memory on this piece of paper. For us to what? To what? Right.
00:35:09
Speaker
Reminds me, I went to the worst training ever in my entire life back a few years ago. And it was on a piece of paper, we had to write down an interesting fact about ourselves, which number one why?
00:35:27
Speaker
and number two like for what? And then you get put on the spot and it's like, I can't think of a single thing that's interesting about myself. Like, what are you talking about? It's just like, I was thinking about this and I'm not going to ask you what your most embarrassing memory is, but I was thinking we've known each other for, I know it's it's more than 10 years now. Let's just say 10 plus years.
00:35:53
Speaker
I wouldn't ask you most embarrassing memory. No. I wouldn't put you on this. so and they And this is all a bunch of strangers. Right. yeah Right. Exactly.
00:36:04
Speaker
Just no one. That lady, it was 100 people in the room. And then she took everybody's cards and then she would read it out loud.
00:36:16
Speaker
And then you had to say, oh, yeah, that's mine. And then she would call on you to answer the question. And I was like, this is. horrible. Absolutely horrible. will not be and then on the bathroom break I just went and stole mine but stole it back off of her table because I was like I i don't want to play.
00:36:37
Speaker
That sucks. But yeah and who's going to share? i don't know. I everything about that is so annoying.
00:36:49
Speaker
Yeah I would be calling a Gunther without a doubt. Right. and yeah Or those three other people or the girls or like all the people that are, is it true? They have beer and music and
00:37:07
Speaker
I do love, I love the kind of, we go back and forth. Like I said a lot, there's the Phoebe story here where she's getting people out. um yeah There's Ross there's ros and all the awkwardness with Dr. Green.
00:37:22
Speaker
um they never yeah they never have not awkward encounters like every time throughout the entire series they just can't figure each other out can they they can't get this together um They start off making small talk. Let's see. ross This is the scene, right, where Ross goes to get Dr. Green a scotch neat, and he ends up talking to Rachel's mom. Do we know her name?
00:37:51
Speaker
ah name is If we know it, it's escape. She's Mrs. Green in my head. Yeah, and we we do, but I don't know what it is. But I just love when Ross starts talking to her, um and this is where he ends up with the drink, the glasses, the cigarettes,
00:38:10
Speaker
the whole thing. yes and then Mrs. Green is trying to put Rachel in therapy. Yes. And we will talk about this a little later on, but the way Ross has like the cigarette like hanging out of his mouth, I don't know why I find it so funny.
00:38:29
Speaker
but it's's It's just there's something to that when he goes out the hall. It's lit. Yes. And he was kit warming the earpieces and biing the tip all that stuff.
00:38:46
Speaker
and Now, this is where you he says that Neil Sedaka wears them. The two, I quickly Googled him. Is this the way to Amarillo that Tony Christie sang?
00:38:57
Speaker
I feel like Kate and I may have talked about this. It's not a... It's a it's had a resurgence in Scotland, of all things. Oh. This song has become the unofficial national anthem of the Scottish football slash soccer team. um For some reason. I forget the reason. It was like...
00:39:16
Speaker
the team went out and it came on karaoke and they sang it. And it's just, so it it's, it's had a resurgence. um huh I think a couple of people sang it and raised money for charity, but it was that song. And then there was love will keep us together by the captain and to Neil, which I know that song.
00:39:36
Speaker
And he wrote both of those. Oh, okay. But then he also went tour and, you know, did lots of things as a singer. But Neil, I just feel Neil Sedaket, everyone knows the name, but not necessarily anything he actually did.
00:39:50
Speaker
ah Right. But, um yeah, as you said, you know, Mrs. Green thinks, you know, Rachel is, you know, needs some therapy, she's dating somebody like her dad. We do see Jennifer Aniston break when he, when Ross goes to leave.
00:40:08
Speaker
ah she's doing everything she can to cover her mouth. but You can see her laughing, and and who wouldn't be?
00:40:18
Speaker
Now, we are getting to one of my favorites. We'll talk a little bit more, like I said, the whole Ross and Dr. Green thing I love. When Monica goes over to the boys' apartment and she sees Gunther, man alive, I love the way Gunther dances in this scene. Yes! Yes!
00:40:36
Speaker
Like he is, he is just skipping through the apartment. And I just, I don't know. It seems very Gunther-esque to me. Yes. Yes. So funny.
00:40:47
Speaker
um ah Here's yet another question for you. We, um, favorite we first car Have we ever discussed our favorite board games? I wasn't sure if we had. Yes, we have. I thought we had. have because we ended up talking about a podcast about board games.
00:41:07
Speaker
That's right. where Yeah, I've listened to the one that Barry from Friends, Rachel's almost husband in real life, Michael something, his name is, has a board game podcast. That's right.
00:41:21
Speaker
Yes. Yeah, thought we had. Okay, have you ever played Boggle? Yes, played it a lot as a child. Yes. Uh-huh. I played it a lot as a kid, too.
00:41:31
Speaker
But it's so boring. You're not a fan of it now. We played Boggle and Yahtzee. Those were two games we played a lot as a fan. Okay, still love some Yahtzee. I was so excited to teach George how to play Yahtzee.
00:41:46
Speaker
Right. Yeah. like It's a good game. It is. But yeah, no, Boggle is is not great, in my opinion.
00:41:57
Speaker
Yeah, I haven't played a long time. And there was a funny line that and apparently got caught cut out of yours. But it's like whenever she says, you know, keep it down, we're about to get a Boggle tournament going or whatever. Yes.
00:42:13
Speaker
And then Chandler says, And Joey, if these people found out that they're playing spelling games over there, there will be nobody left at our party.
00:42:25
Speaker
Oh, yeah, that line is not there. And then they're standing there. They're, like, dancing. And then he, like, says that.
00:42:37
Speaker
And then they both stop and then die laughing. So that's, yeah, you we see them dying laughing. But in response to Monica saying a boggle tournament.
00:42:49
Speaker
So they just cut out those few seconds. Yeah, but that that was so funny to me because it was so rude. And then that's whenever Gunther comes dancing by. just, I love the way he sort of skip dances. It's just, it's exactly how, not that I've spent a lot of time imagining how Gunther would dance, but if I had, that's exactly how would imagine it. right on point.
00:43:13
Speaker
Yes. Yes. That's it Well, the argue with them, you know, we descend into Rachel's mom and dad just moaning about each other and it kind of goes back and forth and there's some, some very nineties TV, um, camera work when they kind of show Rachel, so it sort slows down and she's in a bit of a panic and the name of the song, what's the name of the song? It's not big yellow taxi. That's another one. The one that's playing when her parents are complaining.
00:43:44
Speaker
Um, Oh, I didn't even notice. Is it Parking Lot? Is that the name of the song? I have no idea. It's one of those songs you would know jeff i said if ah i played it, which I'm not going to just now. It was quite a famous song at the time.
00:44:02
Speaker
I didn't even. You don't know what you've got until it's gone. no, it's not that one. that said Yeah, no, I didn't but even notice because I was so locked in.
00:44:13
Speaker
on what they were complaining about because they talked about the pottery class and then yoga class and the chihuahuas and ah all of Just back, forth, back, forth.
00:44:28
Speaker
Yeah, this is always going to drive me crazy. Yeah, but there was a song in it. And there's several songs because one of my favorite songs of all time is just from, you know, like from my youth. It's Shoebox by the Barenaked Ladies and that's playing in the background.
00:44:43
Speaker
um one their first their first hits um wow was was playing there um let's see yeah the the bare naked leads one of those bands that i'll go and see yeah pretty too much anytime they come to dallas yeah absolutely love them them um yeah might have been big yellow taxi now that think about it um
00:45:09
Speaker
By Joni Mitchell. But anyway anyway. That's neither here nor there. But that's where we end up in this scene. That you love with Chandler and Rachel. In the hallway. Yes.
00:45:20
Speaker
yeah Talk us through it. do you love this scene?
Chandler's Supportive Side
00:45:24
Speaker
Okay. Well because. It's Chandler. yeah He's the one who.
00:45:31
Speaker
You know kind of had The rough childhood and all of that. And I just. I love that. that's who's out there talking and and Chandler's consoling her.
00:45:46
Speaker
Like he knows what's wrong. You know, whenever she's like, whenever he chases that girl out, she leaves and then he sees Rachel just kind of sitting there.
00:45:57
Speaker
and then he's like, you know, how you holding up there tiger? yeah And she's, you know, like what in the world? But he knows what's wrong with her. And he's able to recognize that and then talks with her and listen.
00:46:15
Speaker
And I thought it was just so sweet. but what Such a good friend. his What a good friend. And then, you know, Ross comes out and she's just hugging him.
00:46:26
Speaker
And then it's like, OK, and here's Ross. He can he can take over here. I do like that Passover. You know, the yeah dude they do. They do. Because Ross couldn't have had that conversation with her, you know? Right.
00:46:40
Speaker
And because he doesn't, he wouldn't understand. He wouldn't be able to come from a place where, you know, and I don't know. I just, Chandler is a good dude.
00:46:53
Speaker
is. He's good dude and a good friend. And then i thought it was so sweet because she goes And she talks about, you know, 4th of July memories growing up and it's always the same thing.
00:47:07
Speaker
Like where it all sucks until it doesn't. And then it's all of them together enjoying the moment. And i just, I thought it was a sweet, sweet, sweet scene.
00:47:20
Speaker
It really is. Yeah. I love it. um I like seeing Chandler that kind of soft light where he's he's willing to be a bit vulnerable and to help his friend out. I couldn't agree more.
00:47:34
Speaker
It kind of descends into a little bit of chaos with this final scene, though, when both Rachel's mom and dad are trying to leave. And I mean, I can't remember the order of all of it, but I do love the boys dancing to block Dr. Green from seeing Mrs. Green in the hallway.
00:47:54
Speaker
um It just, yeah, descends into a bit of farce. Well, and then whenever Ross is holding the door and squatting all weird, it's just like, you know, what are you doing? And he's like, well, I'm getting ready to ski.
00:48:11
Speaker
Right. Or water skiing or something. That made me laugh. It was so good. What did you just say, descendant of...
00:48:23
Speaker
just chaos like yeah whatever that was dancing back and forth joey ends up kissing rachel's mom to distract her so they get dr green just all of it um all of it being a mess but we do end with that final scene with the volleyball i wonder if the whole volleyball thing was set up you know for this scene um because the poor flan gets decimated by the volleyball hurtling across the room.
00:48:54
Speaker
of And there is no flan, no cake, no dessert to be had at ah Rachel's birthday party in the end. But she did get her birthday wish. She does get a wish. You are absolutely right.
00:49:08
Speaker
And those things hardly ever come true. Right.
Episode Reflections and Ratings
00:49:13
Speaker
Yeah. it ends And that's so funny in the end. um Yeah, lots and lots of chaos, but a good end, a good end. I think ends on a high with all this funny stuff in the holiday.
00:49:28
Speaker
But, you know, i was just thinking, you obviously can have birthday cake and then you can have cupcakes and then you can have mini cupcakes. I'm going to ask you this week, how many mini portions of flan, we're going pretend you like flan, would you give this week's episode, do you think?
00:49:54
Speaker
Sorry. Quite alright. Quite alright. Seven. Seven. Yep. seven yep All right. You know, i would I think before I watched this, I would have gone with seven also.
00:50:08
Speaker
But I kind of decided I really did like the way it goes back and forth. There were some funnier parts that I'd forgotten about. so I'm actually going to go all the way up to an eight for this one.
00:50:20
Speaker
Wow. I enjoyed it more than I that i thought I would based on what I'd remembered. Okay. So, yeah, this one is going to be up to an eight.
00:50:32
Speaker
But how about your favorite character, your Gunther Central Park for this episode? ah Okay, my Gunther Central Park is Chandler. I love that scene with him and Rachel, and he's so he's funny through that whole that whole episode.
00:50:48
Speaker
And um I also appreciate that at the last moment, they, yeah, come on, we'll have half a party over here at our apartment, and here we go.
00:51:01
Speaker
ye And so Chandler wins it for me. Yeah, it's it's hard to look past that scene with Rachel in the hallway. I'm right there with you. To me, that's ah it's quite an iconic moment. so I completely get why you've chosen Chandler there.
00:51:19
Speaker
um He would have been my choice, but I just couldn't look past Ross dressing up as Mr. Green, Dr. Green, trying his best in all of this to just keep the peace.
00:51:32
Speaker
um I just, there's something about that scene where he's he's got the glasses on, he's going to go fire up one of those bad boys and he throws the cigarette onto Mrs. Green.
00:51:44
Speaker
and then, the this again, there's something about the way he walks out into the hallway with the cigarette hanging out mouth and the glasses that just don't look like him and the way he stares at, you know, it's just brilliant. So I'm going with David Schwimmer slash Ross.
00:52:01
Speaker
Awesome. this one. It's a good, solid choice. All in all, I felt this really, well I was pleasantly surprised with this episode re-watching.
Teasers for Future 'Friends' Discussions
00:52:13
Speaker
I haven't seen it in quite a while.
00:52:16
Speaker
Well, you know what's interesting is I was thinking, because we're starting to get close to the one where nobody's ready. That's so, I was literally just counting on my notes how far to that one.
00:52:29
Speaker
Yeah, and that one, you know, it takes place all in the same place and all of that. And this one, it all it's one evening, one evening, and it's the hallway and the two apartments, and that's it.
00:52:48
Speaker
So that it's really interesting you bring that up because that occurred to me too. Steve, who hosted the very first and third episode of this podcast with me, talks a lot about bottle episodes and he likes those where everything takes place in one location.
00:53:04
Speaker
And so to me, this was almost a semi-bottle episode because all it was just all between the two apartments. Yeah. I mean, it's all right there. and so that's interesting.
00:53:16
Speaker
Bottle episodes. I could not for the life of me think of what that was because I knew that there was a term, and but I could not remember what it was. Yeah, i don't know who made it up. I don't know if it's well known or Steve just made up and I've stolen it.
00:53:30
Speaker
Yeah, well, it's a thing either way. It is. It is. We're going to own it and we're going with bottle episodes. um I did mention this, I think. back way at the beginning of this podcast, Steve will join us for that episode, which will be in about a month's time because that is his single favorite episode of Friends in the entire series.
00:53:53
Speaker
love that. So he wants to join the two of us to give us his thoughts on that. can't wait. Yeah, so that will be yeah about a month. But next week we have... I can't wait for next week. I'm looking forward to discussing this one with you. I remember this episode very, very well.
00:54:09
Speaker
I don't remember the, the and what do you call it? The B line? I call it a B plot. The A plot is Charlie Sheen. But I remember Charlie Sheen.
00:54:22
Speaker
I remember the whole chickenpox thing. Like, i'm I'm pumped because this is so, so... silly. I love it. And it's, it's again, it's one of these ones that I, I know the main storyline, but I don't remember the, the B plot or any of the sort of nuances of it. So I'm looking forward to, to rewatching this one and, uh, yeah, digging into this with you, the one with the chicken pox.
00:54:50
Speaker
Uh, but on that note, any final thoughts about this week's episode? Um, yeah, mean, it was, it was a good solid episode. And, um yeah, that's all.
00:55:02
Speaker
That's all I got for you. Yeah, me too. what Next week, yeah, the one with the chicken pox. I'm looking forward to discussing that. But on that note, thank you, everybody, for tuning in, as always, to the Purple Door podcast.
