Brentford's Performance Review Against Chelsea

00:00:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
whether this is a five-star review on your favorite podcasting platform or a recommendation to your friends we are very grateful for any support that we are able to receive so then I don't feel awful about this away game I think um it was an improved performance on the road compared to many of our performances this season i feel like if we continue to play this way on the road particularly against the top teams there will be days where we do pick up points i thought generally we looked a bit more solid i thought um we limited chelsea to an extent there was there was the odd individual mistake and obviously they got their two goals but um
00:01:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
I felt that it was a good stand of performance against ultimately one of the best teams in the league right now and and there's going to be days where where Brentford put in or any mid-table side puts in a good performance when you're up against one of the very best teams in the country, one of the very best teams in the world right now.
00:01:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
it is always often going to be the case that that team still goes ahead and wins the game. Let's have a look at team news anyway. Brentford did go with a back five, as we discussed in the preview, with Mads Roslev in a right wing back instead of Christopher Iyer. I'm not sure whether that was due to Iyer's injury and him not being ready to start yet, I think. ah Again, with Roslev, I think if there was a week link in the side. It was probably him. I think he may, maybe could have done better for the first Chelsea goal. And I think there was a couple of occasions where he didn't look too comfortable on the ball. Um, the rest of the time ah I thought he was solid enough and and kept his shape well in that right wing back

Player Potentials and Injury Impact

00:02:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
position. But then when Aya came on for him, he produced a brilliant cross down the right. And and that's almost straight away, um, for the Carvalho chance. And that's just not something we've seen.
00:02:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
from roosev i think there's flashes of it sometimes on him but is this is not something we see regularly enough from him yarmoliet kept his place in the side also um despite you know being fit enough for the bench again i thought yarmo played quite well i think you can see his technical quality that's definitely there and i think he is someone that can grow into being a Premier League regular and I can see him making that jump and I can see him playing a lot of the games in the Premier League for Brantford. So I'm pleased to see him get minutes. I'm pleased to see him next to Norgog because I feel like his or his um organization and his positioning and went to press and went to go forward and went to dribble with it.
00:03:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
decision-making. I think this is better sometimes when Norguard's alongside him. I don't know of whether that's Norguard being the leader that he is and guiding him through the game or not. But yeah, I'm only, I can definitely see something in him. um Again, with with such a big quarterfinal coming up in midweek, I expect the likes of, you know, and I am able to come back into the side for that one.

Tactical Adjustments Without Key Players

00:03:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
um this week's disappointment, I guess, was the fact that there was no Igor Tiago on the bench. This has happened now in the last few weeks. The likes of Norgar, Daniel, and now Igor Tiago missing out through a last-minute injury. um Thomas Frank, again, said that it's minor. He's hoping he'll be back on Wednesday, but we never know ultimately on that front.
00:04:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
and that meant an embuma with the front two and that Thomas Frank didn't have a tough decision to make like I alluded to in the preview um over whether to put Thiago in in order to offer us the outboard in terms of his physicality and his ability to get on the end of long passes and it's a shame because I think we did actually set up in the way I thought we might set up here um and we didn't go short as much in playing out from the back and we did rely more on longer balls but we didn't have anyone up front of the profile of Tiago to get on the end of them. um
00:04:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
I will talk about it later, I thought Shada looked bright when he came on um and he actually did get on the end of a couple of them because you know he he is a big guy still Shada and he has a leap on him um definitely when and when he times it correctly he can get on the end of those balls by this thing with Tiago and his sheer physicality on top of his size I thought he would have been a real menace and a real handful in this one
00:05:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
but in any event it meant that Thomas Frank did not have a difficult decision to make in terms of whether to leave and boomer out of the side or whether to leave Whistler out of the side or or if he elected not to leave, either of those out, who does he leave out, is it Am's guard, something like

Thomas Frank's Substitution Decisions

00:05:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
that. So he did not have that decision to make in the end, but it'll be interesting till to see what he would do um when we face other members of the big six and when Tiago is fit in future.
00:05:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
in terms of the subs um that came on again in this one I thought there were some stranger seasons again and i and I said something similar after the Villa Away game um and I feel the same here I think i I don't know why Thomas Frank will feel the need to take off our best creator in Mekar Dam's guard, bringing on, you know, and our best finisher, Whissa, bringing on, bringing off Shada. And I just think, I don't think it can be ah argued this season that Dam's guard is our best creator and Whissa has been our best finisher. And in that regard, then I just think why take them off and replace them with, you know, who is a more defensive minded player, you would, you would fairly say,
00:06:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Unshada who is quick, he's lively and he's big and I understand he he got on the end of um the flick on to create one of the chances in the second half and he also got the assist for Brian and Bummo but I just think you want to leave players like Wisser on and when we're in a position where we're behind I don't see why you shouldn't be adding and adding an attacker to what you've already got in the field, rather than just doing like-for-like swaps. And I think here like there could be an element of managing minutes a month's a busy period, like I've alluded to already. There's ah there's a big, important quarterfinal coming up on Wednesday night, um which I expect the likes of Dam's Garden Whistle to start in. Now they came off early in this one.
00:07:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
um but I do just feel sometimes in these situations Thomas Renton that doesn't necessarily make the right subs and I think he often alludes to always trying to go for the win and um always trying to go for the next goal even in play even in when when we're in a position where we are ahead and I feel like at times his substitutes don't follow necessarily that narrative, although I do think in the second half, around the time we made the subs, before we made the subs, and just after as well, um was probably our best period in the

Chelsea's Team Composition and Talents

00:07:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
game. um i want I want to talk a bit about Carvalho as well, who did later come on to kind of play the Damned Garl role, although there was a period where, you know, Yarmoliuk and Norgar were the midfield three.
00:08:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I want a bit more from Carvalho, I think. I think he's shown flashes of quality this season. I don't know whether it is the fact that he is playing in Dam's Guards position and I feel like Dam's Guards has been our best player this season, maybe that means I'm holding him to a higher standard but I do think at times it is just evident that he's not quite on Dam's Guards level and I think it's a real shame that he missed that big chance the second half because I think if that if something like that goes in for him that could be the confidence booster he needs and obviously
00:08:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
For the Chelsea second goal, although it happened quite a high up the pitch, he was a while in court dwelling on the ball, which led to the goal. um Before we move on to the next section, I just want to also highlight that Meg Homer, Jayden Meg Homer, the left back, not to be confused with Paris Maghomer, who made his debut in the Premier League against Aston Villa.
00:09:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Meg Comer made his debut in the Premier League here after a couple of bright appearances in the Carabao Cup earlier this season. um And as I've already alluded to, I thought, sure, I don't also look bright when he came on. In terms of Chelsea, all their big guns were back in the side after their midweek European exploits, who would have thought it? um and You could see how the likes of Jackson in particular, I think it were I was aware of his progress, but having seen him in the Premier League last season and having seen him at the weekend, you could just see how someone like him has come a long way. And I think it's a reminder how Chelsea have such a young squad and, you know, it's feasible to suggest that they'll all be improving at the same sort of time. And I think someone like Nicholas Jackson um really personifies that he did miss a big chance as well. But obviously he got his goal.
00:10:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
and I thought he was a handful for us to deal with. I thought maybe, obviously, it was it was an expected Chelsea 11, so I won't go too much into the starting lineup. Obviously, the likes of Palmer on the pitch as well. um I thought Brentford never really got to expose the likes of Sanchez Ingol, who probably had one of his better games. But you know could could we have pressed him a little bit more when he was on the ball? Could we have forced him into more mistakes? There were a couple of times where he just kicked the ball out.
00:10:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
and could we have taken advantage of that a little bit more I think possibly.

First-Half Tactics and Defensive Focus

00:10:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
um After the break then I will be going into the first half and talking about how it all panned out.
00:11:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to part two of your daily Brentford podcast. So in the first half on Sunday evening, I thought we saw lots of Chelsea possession and lots of Chelsea territory, but I was at the game and I was comment commenting that it probably wasn't the best game for the neutral overall. And I think that is largely a testament to Brentford and largely a good thing for Brentford. I thought we largely kept Chelsea chances to a minimum and it was something more towards watching Brentford sides of recent seasons, playing away at big six opposition. And obviously we we've achieved some brilliant results over the years. I thought we were a more collective, robust group. I thought we defended the space as well. um We allowed Chelsea to have it in areas that we did not think were necessarily dangerous. um I think
00:12:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
In terms of our build-up as well, we saw less playing out from the back. I think we saw more direct football. um I think that the big disappointment, I guess, in the first half was that Brentford didn't create enough. um And that's what I feel like, you know, having having that outball such as someone like Tiago up front would have helped us massively in this one if he could be on the centre-backs, cause it, you know, just being a handful winning flick-ons to the likes of Brian Abuma to run onto. I thought that would have been exactly what we would have needed in the first half. um have Having said that, Chelsea did muster a few chances. yeah there There was a Palmer shot, which I think you expect Flecken to save. That was after Malo Gusto had had an effort that was going wide, that was blocked um from the edge of the area. The Madu Eke chance was probably the big chance that Chelsea had before they took the lead. That came from a Flecken error playing out from the back. However, he did make up for it by

Analyzing Chelsea's First Goal

00:13:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
making the save. I thought that was
00:13:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
the only real clear error we made in that first start playing out and I thought as i as I said I thought we did it much less than we normally do and we actually you know at the very least we had greater variety to our game and um I think that can only help even even if you are sometimes playing out for the back I think it makes Chelsea more aware that we can also go long and maybe they won't press as intently Chelsea did, however, get the breakthrough against her just before half-time. Could Corella come in to head in at the far post? And this is where we have to talk about who was meant to be tracking him. Again, this is a theme that's happened. It's mainly last season, um conceding from these types of crosses in all fairness. We haven't done it so many times this season. and But to me, that's Mazrassev's man at the far post, Vandenberg.
00:14:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
is covering the error in front and Matt Ross there's kind of the wrong side he is behind him he he's not really in a position to be able to go up with Kukarela and he doesn't challenge for the ball he doesn't seem to jump I think he seems to duck a little bit um and I think it's is a bit disappointing maybe from him I thought again if if um if and when Brentford were playing out on the few occasions we did it, I think he did look the weakest on the ball again and I don't want to single it him out but I just do feel like we need an upgrade in that area and maybe he is ah being asked to play at a level was slightly which is slightly above him, which is no shame. um You know, we play at a high level now, Rostev I'm sure
00:15:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
is a good footballer um for a certain level, but i'm I'm just not sure that if we want to be competing in the top half of the Premier League, that he is the one that we need um back there in those situations. and And this is kind of the reason why, unfortunately.
00:15:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
and That, obviously, put Rev. 1-0 down at the break. um At that point, the next goal kind becomes crucial. I think you need it to fall Brentford's way. I think the concern at the time was that we weren't creating anything really in that first half. And at that point, we obviously needed to score a goal, so that was a concern. The immediate concern, I guess, was that we don't concede in twos like we have done at times this season. We rode out the rest of the first half. Luckily, the half-time whistle was coming, so we didn't have to ride it out for too long.
00:16:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
but that left us at the break. One nil down, and although we saw us be perhaps better, I'm going to say better than we have been at the past, I think only looking back to the Villa game, I thought we were far too open defensively, I don't think that was the case here. um That still left Brentford with work to do in the second half, which we will summarise after this next short break.

Second-Half Performance and Missed Chances

00:17:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the third and final part of the Daily Brentford Podcast. So then I feel like the second half of the game began in a similar manner. I think notoriously Brentford aren't necessarily far starters um in general performance level, especially in the second half I found. um although Although we have obviously been prone to scoring the odd early goal earlier this season, but that was normally more towards the beginning of games. I thought Brentford were very lucky not to be 2-0 down in the early stages of the second half when Nicholas Jackson skied his opportunity with the goal gaping. and It was almost an open goal because Flecker was a little bit out of position um from the cross and I think that's when you expect him to score. He took it quite casually when when I watched back the highlights um and from the away end. I didn't appreciate really how big a chance that was
00:18:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
However, all of a sudden something changed and and and on on and around the hour, I thought Brentford became the better side and we and we started to create and it started perhaps with the nord guard effort. and The ball, um I think from a freaky cool corner, it was um Kept alive, I think by Nathan Collins, who who put the ball back across in the second phase, and it was a decent, volleyed effort, an awkward height um for Norguard, tipped over by Sanchez, it it was high, it was going into the roof of the net, I think, perhaps if it was more directed towards the corner.
00:19:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
it would have been very very difficult for Sanchez to save but he did get on to the end of that one the game I thought turned immediately after the subs came on and Christopher Iyer produced a brilliant cross from the right hand side for Carvalho to fire it off the bar and this is where the game turned I think I feel if this had gone in it would have been a very different game from there on and perhaps the momentum would have stayed with Brentford and perhaps given our record at Stanford Bridge in recent years we may have gone ah on to perhaps win the game or at least hold on to a point or at least ensure that the game was very competitive towards the end and I think it was very competitive towards the end but I just feel like that one had to go in um it was a ball in from the right I think it took a slight nick off a Chelsea defender
00:19:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
and maybe giving Carvalho the benefit of the doubt. This affected the contact that he got onto the ball and he got underneath it slightly. The ball came crashing off the bar. Kevin Scharder tried to follow up with an overhead kick that lands on the roof of the net and the chance has gone in a flash and I think it's a shame because I just mentioned Carvalho perhaps needs a breakthrough, he needs a goal to go his way.
00:20:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know he has score for Brentford, but I think he needs a game where he's really influential and plays a massive part in us winning that game and getting three points. And that that could have been it there with with've just a touch. It could have been one is almost one of his first touches on on the field. And um it's a great shame that it didn't go in. And you know nine times out of 10, a chance like that has to go in and will go in. And and and if it's on target, the keeper.
00:20:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
is not saving that.

Chelsea's Second Goal and Brentford's Response

00:20:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Shortly after and how it often works, Nicholas Jackson goal at the other end was a sucker punch and it was Carl Barrio again, just dwelling on the ball for a few seconds too long and then attacking third. You know, maybe you could argue there weren't many options around him. Um, and one of the best defensive midfielders in the league in Kaiseido was on him.
00:21:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Knit the ball off of him, ball round the corner in towards Jackson.
00:21:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Perhaps again, Pinnock could have gone a bit tighter. I think Jackson was clever. I think he he worked the angle towards him. I think he forced Pinnock slightly, ever so slightly over to the left. um And obviously Pinnock was reluctant not to let him come inside. but he gave himself enough of the goal to aim at and the finish was inch perfect.
00:21:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I think Flecker might be slightly disappointed to be beating it as near post but like I said i think I think the finish is very very good and I think more than anything um we have to give credit to the to the finish rather than question whether Flecken could have done better you know maybe Pinnett could have got tighter as well maybe could have got challenging rather than just try to show Jackson down the line um But all in all, it's a very good goal. and And as I mentioned at the top, I don't think Jackson would have scored that type of finish last season. It just shows how far Chelsea have come and you know the reality of the Chelsea side. We are facing um as opposed to the Chelsea sides we have beaten um in the past. Then I think at that point, the away end was a little deflated.
00:22:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Brentford of course did not give up but it was a very difficult task from that point onwards. There was a bright spot though where Kevin Shada again got away from the Chelsea defence, used his pace to really get up the field and you know when when he's going at full pace there's very few footballers who can stop him in the Premier League.
00:23:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, and it was an inch perfect pass into Brian and boom. Oh, who himself took a brilliant touch to get away from the defender. And it was a good finish to slide it under Sanchez and into the back of the net for a late rally. Um, for Brentford, I think I want to talk about Shada in particular. Again, I think we've seen in recent weeks how his finishing has come on, how he's improved that in many ways and how he's shown that he's got different types of finishes and that he can remain calm and composed, went through on goal and I think we saw this again with his pass into Brian and Boomer. I think he needs he needs praise for that because I think his end product is improving and that means it is very exciting for Kevin Schade because he's already got the physicality, he's already got the pace, he's already got the height, he's got such a leap on him.
00:23:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
and I think maybe physically, I know he said he's got the physicality, but I think maybe he could bulk up a little bit more, but apart from that, if he can add these types of assists, these types of passes, the finishing he's been shown ah hes he's been doing recently, and if he can add that to his game on a regular basis, I think we have some player there.

Shada's Development and Future Strategy

00:24:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think sometimes maybe he still needs to work a little bit on his first and second touch, but you know,
00:24:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
once he's got it under control and under his feet and it and if he can produce that then I am all for him improving and i'm all and I can definitely see that happening um in the second half of this season and next season I can see him having perhaps a dam's guard style rise and to the top of the side if um he continues on this trajectory.
00:24:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Brian and Bruma, again, it's nice to see him score. I have also criticized him in the past, maybe not really performing against the biggest asides or in the games where we don't get as many chances. And this was his only real clear cut chance um on Sunday night. And I think he made the most of it and gave Brentford a few minutes to hope and following that, shortly following that, that Fourth official announced seven minutes of added time, which did give the away in some hope. um I thought maybe at that stage of the game, we started rushing things a little bit. I understand why you'd want to rush things. um But in reality, seven minutes, I think, is enough time to remain calm, build up a proper chance. Whereas I feel like what we ended up resorting to was a lot of long balls into the box, which Chelsea dealt with.
00:25:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
fairly comfortably whereas when we were creating the chances in the 10-20 minutes before that they mostly came through you know better build-up play and you know technical quality with which we saw and very

Post-Match Reflections and Kukurela's Red Card

00:26:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
well. um I want to talk a little bit about Kukurela obviously he got the first goal He got a yellow calf for what was quite a nasty challenge on Carvalho in added time, and then he got himself sent off for a second yellow after the final whistle. um For a little bit of afters, for a little bit of a disagreement, I think it may have been with Kevin Shada. I think there was frustration that he appeared to really exaggerate contact and
00:26:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Exaggerated head injury um for one of the Chelsea, ah for one of the Brentford free kicks, sorry, at the end of the game where Flacken crossed the ball in. um and And that bought himself a foul and a Chelsea free kick, um which ultimately killed the last minutes of the game. And now umm I'm not a fan of Kukarela at all. I'm not i'm not a fan ne necessarily of his character, I think. As a footballer, fine. um I've not really seen enough of him to comment too much on how I see him as a footballer. i think yeah yeah he's a decent player of course he must be he's um he he won the Euros with Spain he's a regular in the Chelsea side now and Chelsea fans are taking to him um obviously I've seen him have some bad games as well such as Tottenham game last week where he was siding all over the place but yeah I just don't understand this sort of behaviour especially after a game when you've won um getting yourself sent off I think if I was a Chelsea fan I'd be
00:27:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
quite disappointed in him um and I just don't get his general attitude um which you know I can probably sound glad in this case that he is not a Brentford player and I won't say anything else on the matter but um overall I think we can look back on this as one of our better away performances of course it's frustrating and disappointing that we didn't get anything out of it I think on another day um we would have at least got a point out of that. Like I said, I think the Carvalho miss was a big flash point. And I guess in equal measure, we have to look at that Jackson miss earlier on in the game where perhaps Chelsea should have been turned a lot before we got that chance. But, you know, given the fact he had missed it, I think, you know, if that Carvalho chance had got it, I do expect it to be in a different game because we were on top by that stage and I thought we were better the team in the last half an hour. But I do think
00:28:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
More points will follow on the road if we are to continue to be a little bit more robust like that. I thought we were harder to score against than we have been. We did in the second half create some chances. So I think that second half could become a blueprint in many ways um of how to perform on the road, particularly against these top teams.
00:28:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Obviously, consideration will have to be given to how often we um set up in about five, but I think even with about four, we can learn something from yesterday's game um and definitely look to set up in future, just a little bit more i robust away from home.
00:29:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
um in order to get a result and and obviously a lot of the time home sides are just naturally slightly more offensive
