Introduction and FA Cup Preview

00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to another episode of the Daily Brentford Podcast with myself, Daniel, where today we'll be looking ahead to the FA Cup action at the weekend as we hope Plymouth are guile in the third round. After some time away, I'm joined by Lydia. How have you been?
00:00:25
Lydia
Yeah, good, busy, but excited to be back. Looking forward to Saturday, so yeah.
00:00:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, I hope so. We're going to talk about it, but I just hope that we take this seriously enough to make sure that we get to the next round.
00:00:37
Lydia
Yeah, oh, yeah.
00:00:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
And just before we get going, guys, we're a brand new company. So we're looking for your support this season and beyond, as we look to bring you the best and most in-depth coverage across the entire network, whether this is a five star review and your favorite podcasting platform or a recommendation to your friends. We are very grateful for any support that we receive.

Brentford's Performance Confidence

00:00:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
So then Lydia, how are you feeling ahead of this one? We've not heard from you for a while. So how, how have you felt over our Christmas fixtures and how are you feeling ahead of this one?
00:01:08
Lydia
Obviously, when it's Southampton, that was like a big positive step. I'm confident against Plymouth, but at the same time, obviously we'll talk about this later, i'm Wayne Rooney gone like, you never know what can happen after a manager leaves. So yeah, don't think we can be like 100% take the backseat. But again, I think it will, I'm confident that we'll win, definitely.
00:01:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I guess the only thing that concerns me is with it's hard to predict what team will put out in these types of games against lower league opposition and in competitions in general.
00:01:40
Lydia
Yeah, that's true.
00:01:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
So who would you like to see come into the team? Do you think we should make many changes at all? what would what How would your approach be going into this one?

Team Changes and Player Opportunities

00:01:55
Lydia
ah thing I you know what, I'd like to see some changes, but at the same time I'd keep flaking for sure. um And I think that we shouldn't like completely change everything. Although it would be good to give some of our B team more time on the pitch and things like that.
00:02:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, well, I think in terms of who might come in, so we might see Walden Marston in goal. I don't know about you, but I still don't really know how good he is, because even against Brighton, when he came on, I didn't feel like he had much to do.
00:02:33
Lydia
Yeah. I would rather be watching that, but I think
00:02:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah,
00:02:38
Lydia
Yeah, we can't tell too much from that brief time when he was on.
00:02:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
he's just a bit of an unknown at the moment, um and I hopefully expect this again to be a game where We are in control, generally,

Player Assessments for Upcoming Match

00:02:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
so if he was to play, maybe he might not necessarily have too much to do here as well.
00:02:51
Lydia
Yeah.
00:02:58
Lydia
yeah
00:02:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's the hope, anyway. um Someone else we can see is Kim Ji Soo, who's, again, played very briefly against Brighton. if we are going to rest either Collins or Vandenberg, you would imagine he would come into the team.
00:03:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Again, we've not seen enough of him. I don't think he is very young. He might be a bit lightweight for me at his age, and he doesn't look too big in stature.
00:03:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But I think he could be one that may come in. um Meg Homer at left back, he we have seen a little bit of him in the Cup.
00:03:34
Lydia
Yeah, we see more.
00:03:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and I think he looks okay. And it wouldn't surprise me actually if if he comes in for this one. And the two that I probably wouldn't mind seeing, and I don't think would um reduce the quality that much, is probably Paris Makoma and Yarmuliac as well. I think they've both looked quite good when they've come in this season. So what are your thoughts on them?
00:03:59
Lydia
Yeah definitely when they've come in i I think they're both I've got more confidence in them and I think it would be good to see them start and I think as well Paris I just remember thinking he he was like quite confident on the ball and he didn't seem as out of place
00:04:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was a good pre-assist for one of the goals, Kean Lewis-Potter's goal

Rico Henry's Return from Injury

00:04:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
against Southampton. Good bit of work from him in midfield. I would also probably, I don't know about you, I'd probably expect Janelle to start this one, given that he didn't start last week. And I would have thought he'll play in place of Norguard, so we could be looking at maybe a midfield free of Janelle Makhoma and Yarmulik. That wouldn't surprise me too much. I think, though, it is important to have some of the senior players in the squad I think we need to mix it up and I think the likes of Mboumo and Damsgaard etc if they're not going to start I think it's very important that they are on the bench because if it's looking close after 45 minutes an hour they need to come on because it would be a disaster if we went out at this stage.
00:04:21
Lydia
Yeah
00:04:49
Lydia
Yeah.
00:05:05
Lydia
yeah Yeah, it would be. What do you think of the thoughts that maybe Henry might be on the bench?
00:05:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah That's the next point.
00:05:14
Lydia
the
00:05:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah. So Rico Henry, it is possible that he will return this weekend. It's rumored that he played in a behind the closed doors um game earlier this week.
00:05:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think he'll get a brilliant reception and I think it will lift everyone just to see him.
00:05:29
Lydia
Yeah. Mm-hmm.
00:05:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I certainly don't think he will play for very long if he does play at all. I would have thought that he would get some minutes if he is on the bench. because putting him on the bench and then not giving in some minute seems a bit pointless.
00:05:46
Lydia
It was a bit cruel.
00:05:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
and But I would probably reserve judgment on him this season. I think it will take him a little while to get back to how he was.
00:05:56
Lydia
yeah
00:05:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
And 14 months out is a long time, but it would be very, very good if we could see him this weekend because Thomas Frank's been quite weird about him in the last few months and not really said where he's at.
00:06:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it looked like a few months ago, he was close and it's obviously not been the case, but it does seem like again that he is close to making a comeback.
00:06:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think any of the other injured players are due to play on Saturday, but I suppose we never know, we might might get a surprise here and
00:06:29
Lydia
Yeah.

Cup Run Focus over League

00:06:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
there.
00:06:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But yeah, just just in terms of having the lights of, ah i'm if I was Brentford manager, I would be inclined to just play a stronger team, I think, and then After an hour, you can take certain players off if you need to, if we've got the game one.
00:06:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it is so important that we go on a cut run this season. We're mid-table in the Premier League. I don't know if you listened to the episode I did on the Newcastle game, but I was not happy that we rested all of our big players in that Newcastle game.
00:07:01
Lydia
notatory
00:07:06
Lydia
and
00:07:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
So do you share the sentiment that we should be prioritising this this season?
00:07:14
Lydia
Yeah, definitely. I think now see we're out of the Carabao Cup and I was annoyed about that. I think that we had like a decent chance of going on a good run there, but I think now now is the best time we've got obviously we're in a slightly more secure place in the league so why not put out a good team why not try and make it this year and we know that we can beat the bigger teams so like why shouldn't we yeah yeah it's ridiculous it was literally like just over a week
00:07:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes.
00:07:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, that's my frustration. We can do it on a one off. When we had played Newcastle, we beat them about 10 days before that in the league.
00:07:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. And then Thomas Frank made only four or five changes, but those changes were Buma, Damsgard, Collins, Norguard.
00:08:04
Lydia
Yeah.
00:08:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
the the spine of the team and arguably our best players. And I just did not understand that at all in terms of prioritizing the league. I would understand if we were in a relegation battle, I would understand if we were in a top four battle, but we're not. we'rere We're, we're, we're, we're mid table. There's an outside chance potentially of Europe, but I think really the the best chance of us doing something this season is by really attacking one of these cups.
00:08:37
Lydia
And who wouldn't like to see a little victory like around breakfast?
00:08:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Or even, I mean FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley, so even even if you get to the last four that's a day out of Wembley and I'm sure it's something that you know we wouldn't forget in a hurry if that happened.
00:08:46
Lydia
Exactly. I mentioned it on the pod before but when when it was like when we were in the payoffs obviously Wembley's just down the road but because of Covid I missed out, so many people missed out seeing us at Wembley, so this would be perfect.
00:09:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, no, I was lucky enough to go that day, but it felt really weird because it was, I was, I was at Wembley, but Wembley was half empty and I couldn't really sit near anybody because we all had to be social distance.
00:09:12
Lydia
yeah um
00:09:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, it it was strange. Um, I also remember going to Wembley for the Yoville game, um, in the league one playoffs and the Carlisle game in the, um, Johnson's paint trophy as it was known back then.
00:09:27
Lydia
and
00:09:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, but I think it would be a completely different stratosphere for Brentford to get.
00:09:35
Lydia
Yeah, true.
00:09:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
to a Wembley game it it in a major competition that everyone is involved in. um And it's possible. It's possible with a bit of luck with the draws. I know Arsenal and Man United are playing each other this weekend, so one of them will knock the other out.
00:09:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
If we get a few nice draws, then it might be that we don't play a team that are considered better than us until quite deep into the competition.

Analysis of Plymouth's Strategy

00:10:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then, like you said, even if we do, we have shown that we can win one-off games.
00:10:00
Lydia
Yeah.
00:10:04
Lydia
hundred yeah
00:10:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So I think it's something to look forward to. Just quickly on Plymouth, Morgan Whittaker is probably the big name who was linked with Brentford in the past.
00:10:12
Lydia
Yeah.
00:10:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
The Brentford fans might be familiar with him. He's not having as good a season, but I suppose Plymouth themselves aren't having as good a season this year. Barley Mumba and Ibrahim Sizoko are also some of their better players from what I've seen this season.
00:10:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
They also have two players in their squad called Andre Gray and Adam Forshaw, both who used to play for Brentford so they could feature um this weekend and I was looking at their fixture lists obviously Plymouth are in a relegation battle in the championship they've got Oxford at home on Tuesday and that is a massive game for them because Oxford are a fellow team who have done quite well recently but they are still another team in the relegation battle at home so
00:10:47
Lydia
Yeah.
00:11:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Part of me wonders whether we could see a reserve squad even from Plymouth at the weekend. um And I wouldn't blame them actually. I i wouldn't blame them more so than Brentford because I understand how survival is.
00:11:15
Lydia
the situation yeah you think there's any risk of like a bounce back after because apparently their new manager I don't think anyone will come in time for Saturday but it would be I guess they've got other things on their mind so it would be a bit like it would be surprising but who knows if they have a big bounce back on Saturday after saying
00:11:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:11:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, they they've drawn they've drawn a couple of more games, and we'll come on to this in the second half, but they've drawn a couple of games since Sacking Rooney. They look a bit more solid.
00:11:47
Lydia
Yeah.
00:11:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
um i yeah I mean, even looking back this season to the Shuffle Wednesday game. that was a Brentford side up against a Sheffield Wednesday team who did make changes as well because they were prioritising the league and we struggled.
00:12:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
We had a lot of the ball and obviously we won on penalties in the end.
00:12:01
Lydia
yeah
00:12:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So that is why I think it depends on how we approach this as well because I think it could be potentially a difficult game and it would definitely be a different game um in terms of Plymouth will probably come and and look to defend and and get men behind the ball.
00:12:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
but In the second half, we will talk about that, including our previous meetings with Plymouth, Plymouth's current form and and um how they're doing in the championship. but And we'll talk about what we're expecting this time around.

Match Expectations and Strategies

00:13:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to part 2 of the Daily Brentford Podcast. As we were discussing before the break, Plymouth are currently rooted to the bottom of the championship. but only three points from safety following the sacking of Wayne Rooney on New Year's Eve. What a great time to go. um They are yet to replace him. David Wagner, the ex-Huddersfield boss, best known for his work at Huddersfield anyway, um is linked with him at the time of writing, but as he said earlier, it's unlikely that anyone will be in place.
00:14:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
um for the game at the GTEC on Saturday. So the caretaker who has been in charge for back to back draws against Stoke and Bristol City is likely to continue here.
00:14:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
and In relation to our previous meetings against Plymouth, you have to go back to February 2011 for the last time Brentford faced Plymouth with a 2-0 win at Griffin Park in League 1 in front of just over 5,500 fans, how times have changed. Nicky Forster was actually Brentford's caretaker manager at the time, um following the sacking, who would have got sacked? probably Possibly Andy Scott.
00:14:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
um and the likes of Kevin O'Connor and Sam Sawn has both played 90 minutes that day and Miles Weston scored both goals.
00:15:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
So Lydia, I don't think we can um read too much from the game in February 2011, but what are we expecting this time around?
00:15:04
Lydia
yeah
00:15:07
Lydia
I think I obviously I'm predicting your Brentford win um and I'm gonna say i'll go i got I'll go for three now.
00:15:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep, Freenil, I think we've got to look at control in this game. I think we will control possession in this game.
00:15:28
Lydia
Yeah.
00:15:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's whether we can break them down. I think they will probably set up in a low block and come to be difficult to beat, whether they put their first teams out or whether they put their reserves out. And if it is their second string, the likes of Andre Gray and Adam Forshaw have not been starting for Plymouth recently, so they will probably feature here.
00:15:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And I think we will have to break them down, which is a different different game that we're used to playing these days.
00:15:56
Lydia
Yeah.
00:15:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I think in the championship, when we were one of the best footballing sides in the championship, we became a bit accustomed to trying to break down these low box. We struggled at times, but other times we were good at it.
00:16:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
My concern and now nowadays is that we don't face that um very often at all now. um so That would be my concern is just trying to break it down. That's where the likes of Jenson and Dam's guard, if he's playing, will be required. And you know part of me says that we should start those those guys because they are the ones that can unlock defenses. And again, with Westford and Puma, if we have them on the pitch and they can get us some goals, then we can take them off and rest them. If we do go ahead by a couple
00:16:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
um plymouth Plymouth, the fact that they're under a new manager, they did concede a lot under Rooney, but they are likely to be more solid, I think, now after a 0-0.
00:16:56
Lydia
Yeah, especially since the draws and stuff like that.
00:16:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, they drew 0-0, I think, away at Stoke, and they've been terrible away

Importance of Cup Competitions

00:17:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
from home this season. So the fact that they kept the clean sheet, I think that demonstrates how things have changed.
00:17:04
Lydia
Yeah.
00:17:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
So you've gone for 3-0. Who are your goal scorers?
00:17:14
Lydia
um I guess it really just depends who's playing.
00:17:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's difficult because we don't know who's playing.
00:17:19
Lydia
um I'm going to assume that Dam's Guard will play even just for a bit. And I'd like, I don't know, I just think ah Frank will probably put him on.
00:17:33
Lydia
It'd be nice to see you go from someone that hasn't we haven't seen yet.
00:17:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it would be nice to see someone like Yamaguchi or Mako if he plays to score.
00:17:42
Lydia
Yeah.
00:17:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Shada will start and I think Shada will score.
00:17:47
Lydia
Mm-hmm.
00:17:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I think out of the three with Shada and Buma and Whissa, I think Shada's most likely to start mainly because it wouldn't surprise me if we just set up with a front two at home against City and Liverpool.
00:18:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And that would probably mean Shada comes out the team for those games. So I expect probably Shada to start here. um and I think Jenson will start as well because again I think you know it might come in for Jenson in those two games and so I'm gonna go 2-0 and I'm gonna go Shada and Jenson just because they're the two that I think will definitely start.
00:18:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Of course if We don't beat them, there's no replays anymore in the FA Cup, so we will be going all the way.
00:18:27
Lydia
yeah
00:18:30
Lydia
Yeah.
00:18:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Extra time, penalties, at the G-Tech, if necessary. I hope it doesn't come to that.
00:18:41
Lydia
Yeah, I really like this.
00:18:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
and I think, like I said, it's really important. um I think that we go on a cup run and um this year. I have A bit of trauma from a few years ago when we lost on penalties to Jillingham and then a few days later we went and beat Manchester City and obviously we've got Manchester City on Tuesday.
00:19:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
So let's hope that that does not happen.
00:19:04
Lydia
Yeah, let's hope his history doesn't repeat itself.
00:19:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes. Any other final words before we wrap this up?
00:19:11
Lydia
ah I think, as we've been saying, it's important not to take anything for granted and to, yeah, go for this game as we do for any other, which is we want to win. And I think that that's probably where the frustration lay with the when we were away at Newcastle in the Cup, that people maybe felt that we weren't going there to win.
00:19:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I just think prioritize this over the league if you have to at this stage, because we are mid table, we are safe in the Premier League.
00:19:41
Lydia
Yeah.
00:19:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
It doesn't look like we're going to go down at all. We are doing quite well, but in terms of getting to the next level, trying to win something, this is where the opportunities are. And of course, this is very difficult.
00:19:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm not saying it's easy for Brentford to win the league cup or the FA Cup, but we won't even have a chance if we don't try and it it does happen.
00:20:03
Lydia
yeah
00:20:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
It does happen, you know, teams at least get to the semifinals um if if they take it seriously. It's happened before. I know even the likes of Watford and teams like that have got to the final on in recent years, albeit they they got battered by Manchester City in the final.
00:20:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we we, yeah, we can go a long way.
00:20:20
Lydia
We know that we can beat them so.
00:20:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
So um obviously we have to hope for nice draws along the

Conclusion and Listener Appreciation

00:20:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
way.
00:20:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think this is a nice draw to start off with at home against the bottom club with the worst away record in the championship. And that does not mean though that we can't, we we have to take this seriously because I do worry with the changes. Even if we still are a better team than Plymouth, sometimes too many changes can result in a disjointed performance and it's then harder to break teams down. So let's hope for a win at the weekend. Otherwise it'll be a very, um, disappointing podcast to get on Monday. And I don't want to repeat that. So thank you for listening to the daily brand podcast.
00:20:28
Lydia
Yeah.
00:21:04
