Team Selection Challenges

00:00:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
So let's get into the team news. And unfortunately, the team largely picked itself with the injuries that we had to contend with. The only possible change I raised in the preview was whether we'd bring in your money for an extra man in midfield. But Thomas Frank continued with Kevin Shada. And I think in hindsight, that was the right decision. I think what Shada offers is the outlet if we want to go longer.
00:01:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think away from home in particular against a side good in the press and good in possession as Brighton are, I thought it was a useful outlet to have. And I thought as the game went on and Savannah Marston came on, especially um we did start to go longer. We did start to aim for Kevin Shada and the one thing Kevin Shada does have, even though he wasn't at his best again, is he has that leap and he has that ability to duel with an offender, particularly if it is a full back, if he's playing out wide.
00:01:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
um and he's able to win the ball in the air and there were ah two or three times at least in the game where the likes of Whistle were able to feed off of those knock-ons that he was able to get for us and obviously that gets further up the field.
00:01:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Unfortunately, on the bench, I mean, I was not too enamoured with that bench that we saw at all. um It contained a lot of B-teamers, it contained a lot of players who hadn't played any Premier League minutes at Brentford. So far, running Premier League minutes at all, for that matter, I thought Fabio Carvalho were really the only established attacking option on the bench.
00:02:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
and of course it is still the early days of his Premier League career and I just think that is a bit of a concern especially if Brighton had scored and especially if we were then looking to get back into the game or add another dimension to our attack.

Player Injuries and Debut Performances

00:02:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Unfortunately it didn't stop there as during the game We lost Mark Flecken in the first half. He made a number of saves and then went down. He went down a couple of times and on the second occasion he could continue. So we saw Hakon Valdemarsson for his Brentford Premier League debut. I thought he coached quite well. I thought the team in front of him coped quite well as well in protecting him. I think the most work that either keeper had to do was definitely Flecken in the first part of the game before
00:03:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
He got injured, but I thought Vardemarsen grew into it. I thought um he even showed some good touches on the ball, which is a positive sign going forward if he is to continue in goal in Flecken's absence. There was a particular um little move at the end of the first half where he was being closed down by the Brighton striker and he did a little back kill to get himself out of the situation. I don't like to see that particularly from keepers.
00:03:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
um but but it worked on that occasion and he was able to play out and I thought again his long pulls towards Shada were mostly on the money and Shada was able to win the flick-ons.

Defensive Concerns and Transfers

00:03:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
we then finished and with a back four ahead of him of Mads Roslev, Nathan Collins, KLP at left back and Kim Ji Soo who had to come on for Ben Mee also making his Brentford debut and his Premier League debut I don't even think Kim Ji Soo has featured in the cup or certainly not from the start if I remember correctly so that is a concern moving forward again I think Kim Ji Soo did what he needed to to see out the game I think it is a credit to all of them, but perhaps especially Nathan Collins for holding it all together as a senior centre back and keeping a clean sheet. I thought we dug in extremely well.
00:04:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
What I would say about Kim Jisoo though is that he does look a little bit like he could do with bulking out a bit more. I think it may take him some adaptation to the Premier League. um ah He may need to get it in the gym a bit more to um be able to deal with maybe more physical strikers. But again, high pressure situation came on, didn't make any mistakes, did what he had to do, got the ball away when he needed to, um and was part of that effort to get a clean sheet. and probably felt very good about it afterwards alongside Vowden Marston who got a brilliant reception um from the away fans by the way did Vowden Marston came on obviously in front of the Brentford away fans in that first half um all this tells me though is I think Brentford mainly to act quickly in January I think it is not sustainable and I don't think
00:05:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
We should have to, or we should even put it on the likes of GC, Van and Marston to rely on them, I think. Particularly at full back, we need to act quickly and depending on when, or how bad, or how serious these injuries are to the likes of Seth Vandenberg, Christopher Iyer, Benjamin, Ethan Pinnock, whether we need to even think about bringing in centre-back cover for the second half of the season.

Bench Strength Comparison

00:05:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
When it comes to Brighton, I thought they lined up largely as expected, although NCSO was given his first start in a while. The bench looks strong, though, in contrast to Brentford with the likes of a Dinh Grat, Minh Teh, and Solly March, who's also been out for a very, very long time for Brighton. He got an amazing reception from the home fans, similar to what I could imagine Rico Henry will receive when he eventually returns to Brentford. They were waiting in the wings anyway, and that did concern me a little pregame, I have to say.
00:06:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
with just the options, just the options. If the game's not going quite bright as well, they had more to do. And I do feel slightly for Thomas Frank in that respect in terms of, you know, he's he's got to his work, what he's given. given And it's a very limited squad that um we have available at the moment.
00:06:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Of course, Brentford set up a back four, as we usually do against sides in and around us. And it was crucial, I'd say, more than ever to have the likes of Christian Norgard and Vitaliy Enel protecting that back four. um And I thought they both did well um in doing so with, obviously, limited experience around them. After the break then, I will be going into how the first half, in particular, played out.

Key Player Performances

00:07:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to part two of your daily Brentford podcast so then I fought the game on Friday evening. Started in quite a concerning manner. I would say I thought Brighton were on top. I was thinking that we have seen this before in terms of a below par performance on the road.
00:08:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Julio and CSO in particular. Brentford gave it away very, very deep. I can't remember who it was and misplaced the pass, but in CSO I thought should have put away that chance um against the post. Flecken was also caught into action a number of times to the extent that he broke the Premier League record for most saves whilst playing less than 45 minutes, although I do appreciate that it is in very specific circumstances in which keepers play for less than that amount of time. But it does give ah ah essence of how Brighton were on top in the early stages of that game. I thought as the first half wore on, I thought we did become slightly more solid, hence protecting Valor Marston as well when he came on.
00:08:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
However, we were rather blunt in attack, rather struggled to get out and and create chances, apart from the offside goal, which is very, very narrow and could have been different on another day, Wisser. Although he is caught offside a bit often for my lighting liking, I thought this one was quite unlucky. I do have to credit Mas Rossev. um He has been criticized multiple times this season. um He is often the target of Brentford fans criticism when we lose games, but that would have been an assist from him. It was a decent ball into Whistle her and obviously Whistle did what we know to expect from him. but
00:09:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
In terms of Mas Rossev in general, I thought this was one of his better games. I thought he was looking forwards. I thought he was trying to progress play. He got up the pitch to support um Brian and Bruma on the same side. And, you know, on another day he would have ended up with an assist, as I've just mentioned. I've got to talk about Dam's Guard as well. and The only other real moment of um potential hope for us I guess in that first half going forwards was that Mikhail Damsgaard run and if you've seen the highlights you all know what I'm talking about he beat three or four Brighton players
00:10:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
who all had to team up to deal with him. And if he had ran through there and scored, I think that would have been one of the greatest Brentford goals of all time that I've certainly ever seen. It was brilliant. And again, I thought he was one of the bright sparks, always looking to go forwards. I think that does mean that he does lose a ball sometimes in maybe once or twice in dangerous areas. But the fact that he is always trying to progress play, he is that one bit of creativity, that one bright spark. Whereas on the road, typically this season, we have been much more reserved as a team. We'd be much more conservative, much more cautious, much more gritty rather than maybe creative. And I think Adam Scott offers that threat much more. And literally when he was running through those Brighton players, that is something, you know, messy-esque almost. It's something that you've seen Messi do before and not many other players. and
00:11:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
that from him is brilliant. And again, and all we want from him, all our all I want from him now to push himself to the next level is to get his numbers up in terms of goals. I think if he can do that, then he will truly become, he will truly be playing at a level of one of the best um players in the Premier League at the moment. um I think that's what at the moment it separates him from the likes of, you know, your partners in the Premier League, I think his goals. And I think obviously Palmer,
00:11:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
is in a remarkable run of scoring goals and if Dan Clark can get anywhere near that, he will certainly be you know a very, very good Premier League player and he continues to impress.

Halftime and Strategy Concerns

00:11:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
I didn't necessarily have a good feeling at half-time in this one. I thought Valor Marston was a a bit and a big unknown, I guess. um Brentford fans have seen very little of him since he signed. He's played a couple of cup games, but typically against lower league opposition, particularly in games where he didn't have much to do. And although the the only time I've really seen him properly is when he played against England for Iceland in that pre-Euros friendly in which he kept a clean sheet and drew no one against England. Of course, England weren't at their best that day, but
00:12:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Apart from that, I just don't think we've seen enough of him. I just don't know how he will cope. And I think, particularly with the Arsenal game coming up, we will learn more about that. But yeah, at halftime, I did feel like it was a matter of time before Brighton scored if we kept allowing pressure, as I thought we were. A little bit too passive in that first half. I thought the one thing we did particularly struggle with early on in the game is passing out from the back, I think.
00:12:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Again, we we try to do, particularly when Fleckham's on the pitch, he's short goal kicks where Ben Mee perhaps takes it, knock knocks it across to Fleckham, then Fleckham looks for Collins, or he looks for Rostov on the right-hand side, or he tries to maybe go into Norgad or Janelle or even KLP on the left, I just think. The issue with doing this with a back four that contains the likes of Ben Mee, who's very much you know known for being in sides like that Burnley team who were much more functional in their style of play. And obviously the Brantford team of a couple of years ago, where she was of such a big part in, again, much more functional, much more, you know, perhaps a bit more direct with the likes of Ivan Tony up front. I thought we really struggled to again, play out with that defence. And obviously, again, Maz Rostev, I include him in that. I think Maz Rostev is much more comfortable defending um and is much more comfortable
00:13:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
um when he doesn't have to play these intricate passes because I don't think his vision is necessarily the best. but yeah those Those were my thoughts in the first half and at the break and after the break that we're about to go into. I will summarise the second half.

Second Half Analysis

00:14:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to part three of your daily Brentford podcast. So then we're into the second half. I have to say it was a largely uneventful game, which is perhaps why this podcast might be slightly shorter than it usually is. I thought the game in the second half settled into a much more even pattern and became end to end towards the end. I think particularly in those last few minutes, there was ah there was a ah period, I think perhaps in added time where Brentford broke forward and you could see when Brighton quickly attempted the counter.
00:15:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
the likes of Damsgar, Brian and Boomer, Yum and Whistler really, really struggling to get back. um It certainly looked like a hard-earned point and that we really dug in here. um Both sides though, you have to say they look for the win. I thought Brentford looked much better in that second half. Again, massive credit to Nathan Collins for holding out defensively as a senior centre back with so much changing around him. I don't think it can be underestimated.
00:15:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
how difficult it is to maintain his own performance levels when you constantly have different defensive partners and your you know you essentially become the leader back there. And Nathan Collins is still a young defender himself, but he you know had to essentially become the leader.
00:15:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
um back then, in the absence of Ben Mee, in the absence of Ethan Pinnock, and even Vandenberg and I, ah who perhaps are at a more um similar level to where Collins is in his career.

Controversial Decisions

00:16:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Again, I thought as a defensive unit, we protected Valdemarle very, very well and we didn't give away anything clear-cut.
00:16:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
in that second half. There were a few chances which Brighton spooned quite significantly over the bar towards the end. We saw Solley March get a bit of space on the edge of the box and Brighton fans were willing him to score given he'd been out for 14 months. I did fear the worst at that point. Again, I think that's something we're a bit guilty of at times. we We don't close down these efforts away from goal. We don't put enough pressure on it, whereas I think it's a little bit unnecessary. um I know it has to be a good effort to go in from there, but you know it does happen, primarily quality. Very high at level we are playing at. um I guess I have to address it. I think the big incident of the second half
00:17:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
was the Jair Pedro incident, so Jair Jair Moliuk was booked for pulling him back. um Just one of the runner one of the meal fouls you see being made every week in the Premier League um when one team's trying to top stop the other from going on a quick counter, so Jair Moliuk took the yellow card. Then Jair Pedro looked to swing an arm in Jair Moliuk's direction and He completely missed. he He did not make any contact with Yarmuliac. But my understanding of the rules and what and what the rules ultimately are is that it is irrelevant whether he makes contact with the man or not. And it is all about intent.
00:17:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
And so I have seen some so-called refereeing experts say that, you know, they can't be sure of Jal Pedro's intent or that he was making a gesture towards the referee. I can't see how I can buy that at all, if I'm really honest, because in what what gesture are you making to the referee if you so clearly swing your arm your elbow, your bent elbow, behind your back, at the height of Yarmolek's head, knowing that he is next to you or behind you somewhere, I don't understand how the intent isn't there or how the frustration wasn't there in that moment to make contact or to lash out at Yarmolek. I ultimately just think that's the wrong decision um that was made by the referee um and then confirmed by VAR, I think.
00:18:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah how can how you can say that's not clear and obvious. i It makes me wonder what has to be done and what Japrodo had to do for it to be clearly and obviously an attempt at swinging out at Yarmulik. So i thought I think he was very, very lucky um in those circumstances, although I do accept it was late on in the game. And it may well not have changed the outcome.

Match Summary and Future Plans

00:19:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought the ultimate story of the second half was at both sides, that cutting edge. um But it has to be seen as a good point on the road in the circumstances, not least because of Brentford's away form and how poor we've been at times on the road. um I know we've had a lot of difficult games on the road. I think Brighton potentially was another difficult one. It's a place we've not won in the Premier League. It's a team who like to keep the ball.
00:19:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
who are very good in the press and I think those are things that we struggled against this season where we haven't been the ones that are able to take control of the game or we aren't able to easily play out from the back which I think was the case here. I thought the second half was much much better than the first. I thought it could have gone either way potentially in the second half but in reality neither side came close enough at all to say that they really deserve to win this game I don't think.
00:19:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I also think it's a good point, purely not even looking at the opposition, purely looking at the circumstances at those injuries. The fact that we lost Ben, me and Mark Flecken, and that um we'd even made all of our free subs in the in the three sub windows, two of them forced by having to bring off the two injured players. So even the likes of Carl Valle weren't able to come on. But I think and just just the fact that you know we kept the clean sheet with Adam Arson in goal, G2 playing his first game at centre back,
00:20:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it's testament to them and I do hope it gives them confidence because they may well be needed um even more so in the coming days and weeks as the games continue to pile up. so that was That was a game, really. i don't I don't think there was much more to it. um The highlights on Match of the Day were certainly very, very short for those of you that watch that in the UK. But that will do for today's episode. And that is the summary of Brighton, Neal, Brentford, Neal. Thank you for listening sorry to the Daily Brentford Podcast. We hope you've enjoyed today's episode.
00:21:10

And once again, we'll be extremely grateful for your support as this will enable us to get bigger and better moving forwards. DailyBrent for coming from X Instagram and TikTok under the handle at GSP and Brentford. We'll be back again tomorrow and we've already recorded this for a crossover with the team over the Daily Arsenal ahead of our midweek clash at the GTEC, which will be a very, very big test. um I can assure you with the injuries that Brentford have in particular. Until then from myself, thank you for being with me.
