Brentford's Lineup vs Arsenal

00:00:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
The game on Wednesday evening, we touched on this a little bit in the crossover. It came out yesterday with the Daily Arsenal podcast. If you haven't listened to that already, please go back on the podcast feed and that will be there for you.

Let's kick off with team news then and I suspect once again, this is a game where the team news will, the team will kind of pick itself based on availability within the Brantford squad. I'm expecting Valda Marson to come back in for Flecken who came off injured against Brighton on Friday.
00:01:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Adam Austin for me is a weird one because I don't really feel like Brentford fans know how good he is yet. um He signed I believe from the Icelandic league so he is not known, he's not had a career within Europe before. um Certainly not in a major league.
00:01:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
um He's played a handful of cup games for Brentford, I think all against lower league opposition, all in games where Brentford have generally dominated possession and typically haven't given away too many shots, so he's not needed to make a vast number of saves. Even, you could argue, against Brighton, I think their busier keeper was certainly Mark Flecken in the 35-36 minutes he was on the pitch for. I thought that after Valdemarsson came on, he didn't really have
00:02:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
a big save to make. I felt that he did what he needed to in terms of claiming crosses. He impressed me quite a lot of that, particularly at corners as well, um claiming those. um He was OK with his feet. He um did tend to go a bit longer with his passing, but I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing, especially looking ahead to Arsenal, who ah one of the big six sides they're technically a better football team than us so I suspect this is a good game for Brentford to look to go a little bit longer in any event it is also the first time a big six side have come to the G-Tech this season so it'll be interesting to see how we can match up against them in this regard particularly offensively it'll be interesting to see whether we can create more chances as we
00:03:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Tended to have done in home games so far this season even against the likes of Newcastle um Who are and have since proven since that league game against Brentford who are very good team and gone on a very very good league run away from that If it is possible we could see Vandenberg back in the side and that would be a big boost and I suspect that if there is any chance of him being able to play, Thomas Frank will try and make

Defensive Concerns and Strategies

00:03:33

that happen. and He could then partner Nathan Collins in defence and it's absolutely crucial. I think the worst thing that could happen to Brentford now
00:03:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
is a Nathan Collins injury on on top of Ethan Pinner, Christopher Iyer, Ben Mee, and Vandenberg. I think we've got to keep Nathan Collins fit ah but at the same time. He's got he's got to be playing 90 minutes at the moment because he's the one we need to rely on in that back line. If Kim G. Suess to come in again, this will be a massive test for him. um A bit like Valdemars and I expect Valdemars to be tested a lot more in this game. I expect him to have to make saves.
00:04:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
brenford to get anything out of it and I would also expect Kimji Su to have to be strong and have to be good at the defensive side of the game. I don't necessarily expect too much from him in terms of playing out. I think like I said, I think we should be looking to go a bit longer here, but I think particularly at even corners. I can see as I as I referenced in the crossover episode, I can see.
00:04:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
the likes of Gabrielle, Saliba, that the the blockers Arsenal like to put in play um at corners. I can see them trying to get in and around Valdemarsson and even Jisoo to try and unsettle them um to to try and score one of their trademark goals. I think we can call it now um from a corner says it's slight concerns in defence. I think at full back, I expect Maz Rossev and Kino is positive to continue. I think what I can say about Rossev is A lot of his better games in a Brentford shirt have come against these these top sides, where he can focus on the defensive side of the game and where he can go a bit longer in terms of playing the ball forwards. King Louis Potter again, apart from possibly the Forest game, has looked fairly solid and left back. And the positive is that he won't be up against Bukaya Saka, who is out. Arsenal have confirmed for a couple of months, I think, at the very least he's had to have surgery on an injury.
00:05:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I guess the other bit of team news or tactic tactics wise, what I want to talk about is whether Brentford go to a back five and I think Normally, the answer would be yes. I think against any of the big teams, if we go over back five, it makes us a bit more solid. um I think Thomas front when we play with a low block, I think he prefers to being a about five. um I think it minimizes the space, particularly around the penalty area that Arsenal have to play in. But I do worry whether the personnel allows him to do that. I think we could see a situation. He's done it before when Mads Rostev is at right centre back where
00:06:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
He has played before. i don't Again, it's not ideal, but he could do a role there. And then you could have Nathan Collins and then if Vandenberg is back, he can he can settle in there as well. Or if Vandenberg is back, maybe you can have Kim Jisoo as um the right or left centre back. And then Mads Rossev then allows him to play a wing back.
00:06:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think this is a possibility and maybe still the best option to go with just in terms of closing down the space. I think if we're going to get anything out of this game, we'll have to be a team effort, particularly defensively. um And I think Norgard and Yannell more than ever will be very, very important in front of that back line, whether it's about four or about five to help them screen them and help fill in the spaces um to prevent Arsenal from being able to create. And it is something they have struggled um with a little bit in open play.
00:07:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Again, only beating it, so it's 1-0 on Friday night, despite having over 80% possession, I believe.

Arsenal's Expected Lineup

00:07:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Going forwards, you can expect it to be similar. I think we can hurt any team going forwards with the likes of Whistler and Abumo. I think we need Abumo to be on it and have a good game here. um As um Josh spoke about um on the crossover episode, he could be up against quite an inexperience left back.
00:07:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
in Lewis Skelly, or he could be up against someone returning from injury, which may make Brian and Bummo the favourite in that personal duel. Then he may fancy his chances. And then we have the question as whether Kevin Schade continues in the team. I think um it's it's a difficult one because I think in terms of him being the outboard, I think we need him in the team.
00:08:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
in order to be the one to win the flick-ons on. I think otherwise Tiago would have been a perfect fit for this game, but I don't expect him to be back. um If we don't go with Kevin Shada, then at least we can have another body in midfield, because I would expect someone like Yum earlier at to come in. so but We'll see how it plays out but I think having watched the Brighton game on Friday I think we need a presence up top and I think it has to be Kevin Shada because he's simply the only option um who has any kind of stature who can go up maybe against um the Arsenal fallback um to try and win drills.
00:08:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
um In terms of Arsenal, they're apart from Bakaia Saka. um They have a few problems at full back as well as Josh alluded to in the crossover episode. um Away from that though, we can expect to see Declan Rice and Martin Odegard in midfield. I think they have the best defensive partnership in the league in terms of Gabrielle and Saliba. And obviously we'll see David Rhea face Brentford for the first time since leaving the club.
00:09:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Of course, he was only on loan from Brentford last season, so he couldn't play in Ramsdale. Had to play the two games against Brentford last time round. Kai Havert often scores as well against Brentford. He scored the winner in home and away games last year, so we have to look out for him again. He's a striker who is good in the air. Can get on the end of crosses so the likes of Nathan Collins will have to be aware and may need to follow him around a little bit because I would back.
00:09:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Collins in a duel with him over Kim Ji Soo on the other hand. um Away from that again I think Gabriel Jesus has come into a bit of form recently so we could see him in the side um and he has scored I think four goals in just two games um prior to the at-switch game both against Crystal Palace.

Historical Matches and Key Players

Hello and welcome to part two of your daily Brentford podcast. So then let's look back at our previous meetings with Arsenal in the Premier League. So then the obvious one that everyone thinks about the most famous night, one of the most famous nights in Brentford history most likely is the opening day of our first Premier League season where Brentford beat Arsenal 2-1 at the G-Tech.
00:11:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
That was a long time ago now, and Brentford have failed to be Arsenal in every game since, only getting one point in that time, which was a draw at the Emirates a couple of years ago, in which the equaliser scored by Evan Toney was given in controversial circumstances, despite Christian Orgard being slightly offside in the build-up.
00:12:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Going back to last season, both games were actually quite tight and narrow. I remember the game at the G-Tech was 0-0 for a long time until Kai Havert scored an 89th minute winner for Arsenal. The game at the Emirates, Arsenal took an early lead before Aaron Ramsdale made a big error on the stroke at half time, gifting Johan Wisser an equaliser. And then once again in the second half, our nemesis Kai Havert.
00:12:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
scored again um to complete the victory for ahino on this occasion could we see more of the same perhaps guy at so likely step up again for arseno i think in terms of how they're doing at the moment they want a decent run of results a arsenal they um off the back of a 1-0 victory against Ipswich, the same night in which Brentford played Brighton. In that game they had lots of possession, lots of um you know movement around the area but kind of struggled to create. um Aside from again and a couple of corners which they came close from, I think that is an area of the game in which Arsenal fans are a little bit worried about. They haven't quite done maybe as much as they
00:13:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
would have hoped to do in open play, even with Pekaya Saka in the team. um They have been accused of relying a little bit on set pieces, which isn't a bad thing. I mean, coming from me as a Brentford fan, I think over the years Brentford have made very good use of set pieces ourselves. And, you know, if it wins games and if it eventually wins Arsenal the title, then no one will be complaining. I think the Concern from an Arsenal perspective is that Liverpool on the other hand are free scoring and have opened up a gap on them at the top of the Premier League. I think it will be a battle here between whether Brentford's defence can hold out or whether Arsenal will be able to breach it and will be able to start creating and
00:14:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
If we were in a situation here where Brentford could line up with a back four of even Ira at right back, KLP at left back, and you know a back five of Vandenberg, Pinnock and Collins, I think I'd be confident that we can frustrate Arsenal for long periods. And that at the very least, at the very most, sorry, it'd be a narrow Arsenal victory.
00:14:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
perhaps similar to the game that G Tech last season. And that's even without Rico Henry and Aaron Hickey in the side who are our long suffering full back options.

Brentford's Defensive Strategy

00:14:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
i Given the reality though, I am concerned that Arsenal will find a way through and will perhaps find a way through on multiple occasions. Obviously everyone knows my prediction from yesterday's crossover episode, I predicted Arsenal to win 3-1, I just think It is a baptism of fire for the likes of Alden Marsson. And it's no criticism of Alden Marsson. We don't really know how good he is, um given the limited game time he's had in the Premier League, in England in general, um and and definitely for Brentford. I do, however, get flashbacks to a couple of years ago when David Rare was injured around Christmas time.
00:15:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
and we had the likes of Fernandes in goal, we had Jonas Lossel who he brought in on loan in goal and whoever seemed to come in for David Rea seemed to really really struggle that year and I am inclined to worry about the same thing here. I think the demands that a team like Brentford places on their keeper in order to be good with their feet as well as all the traditional goalkeeping stuff makes it more difficult, I think, to step into the side, and particularly when you are behind a makeshift BAF 4, a makeshift BAF 4 that may include a 19-year-old central defender making his first Premier League start, and in front of a left back who is actually
00:16:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
by trade and ah an attacking player in King Louis Potter. And, you know, in front of a right back who in Rostev, who has been criticized at certain points in his Brentford career, I think I am concerned by that prospect. And I do accept, though, that is, you know, a little bit of unknown and there is perhaps a chance he has a really good game on Wednesday night.
00:16:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
and maybe we can frustrate them. But that's what concerns me again with Kim Ji Soo, nothing against him. I'm sure he'll go on to become a really good centre back, hopefully for Brentford, hopefully in the Premier League. But will Wednesday night come too soon for him? I think there's a reason he hasn't played. um He hasn't even come off the bench really um for the likes of Pinnock when he's fit. And I think it's because he's not yet ready and he's not even yet being deemed ready to maybe go out on loan.
00:17:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
and have an impact maybe in the championship or in another league elsewhere. so It's going to be a big challenge, I think, for um those individuals to step up. And I think that's why the likes of Collins, Norguard, you know, in front of the defense, they're going to be even more important, more important than ever. And I think if we are going to try and get something out of this game, we need to frustrate Arsenal for as long as possible. We need to get bodies back and we need to minimise the space and we can't expose the likes of Kim Jisoo to one-on-ones with the likes of Kyle Haverst because it's just not
00:17:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
it's just not going to be sustainable. He's not going to be, and I don't expect him to win regular duels against you know an established German international um who plays up front for Arsenal. I just don't expect that to happen. um I think if Brent Ford are to get a result, I think what else needs to happen is we need to get forward. We need to we need to have opportunities on the counter-attack. We can't be allowing relentless pressure.

Counter-attacking Opportunities

00:18:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
We need to, with some regularity, get the ball forwards, whether that is a quick long ball to Shada, and then get Whistle, and then Boomer, and Damsguard in and around Shada, and allow the creativity to go from there. Again, this is a big ask because I think we struggled a little bit with, in terms of running out of ideas, I think Damsguard aside against Forrest, we ran out of ideas a little bit.
00:18:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And I think Forrest have one of the best set about parents in the league and and and I would say to say about Arsenal I'd say that's their strength um With Gabriela Saliba and we know we know a lot about David Raya as well in behind them And how good he can be as well and the saves he can pull off and you know Even in an attacking sense the threat that David Raya can have in terms of his ability on the ball. So I think we need to resolve that and we need to find a way around that whether that's targeting the full backs of Arsenal particularly if if young Lewis Skelly is playing at left back um and I think the key to this again I think is getting once we've got the flick on or once once you know we've we've got the ball up the pitch by other means I think we need to get Dam's guard on the ball as much as possible I think we need to get him in space we need to get him running forward we need to get him on the ball
00:19:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then when he is looking forward, we need the likes of Whissa and Abumo and even Sharda to be making runs in behind. him We need to give him something to you know pick out. and And I am confident that he can do that. If if if Brian Abumo is making the right one, I am confident that Dam's guard will be able to pick him out. And maybe we can get Tom Joy that way.
00:19:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I won't go too far into my predictions again because that's what I shared in a crossover episode. So we'll leave it there for today's episode of the Daily Brentford Podcast. Of course, I hope I am wrong with the prediction. I hope Brentford come away with something, but I can't help but thinking the more important game this week is probably Southampton away. And if we can get through this unscathed, no no new injury crisis,
00:20:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
And if we can avoid hammering, because I don't think if we were to lose four or five nil here, I don't think that would do the likes of Valdemars and Kim if he is to play. I don't think it would do their confidence any good. I think if we can get through this unscathed um and do ourselves justice in terms of the performance, even if we lose the game, I think that will that will that will do us good heading into a game away at Southampton at the

weekend. And although we haven't been very good on the road, I think that is a game that we should be looking at.

trying to control. And you know then if we look at our forward players at least, I think we can have some joy um away at Southampton at the weekend. So let's get through this Arsenal game and see where we are at come full time. So that will do for today. Thank you for listening to Daily Brent for podcasts.
