This is your Match Review Monday, as we analyse where it all went wrong as the Bees became the only Premier League side to lose to lower league opposition at the weekend.  We talk familiar frustrations, aims for the rest of the season with no cup competitions left and the return of a certain Rico Henry.

Brentford's Cup Defeat Analysis

Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Brentford Podcast with myself, Daniel, where today we will be reviewing another disappointing outing in cup competition as we were beaten 1-0 by Plymouth at the GTEC on Saturday.

Rico Henry's Return and Team Recovery

00:00:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
So let's start with the only positive and he'll be the only positive we talk about in this whole episode, but it is a big one and it was the long awaited return of Rico Henry. I was quite surprised to see him in from the start um pregame or not pregame. I knew he would be, but i am I was quite surprised that Thomas Frank, in his press conference the day before, confirmed that he would be starting. I thought that after being out for such a long period, we'd see him on the bench and maybe only play 20 or 30 minutes. So that they've clearly kept it under wraps, his condition. He's clearly been training for quite some time now. He's not played.
00:01:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
any b-team games that have been advertised or open to the public or any competitive minutes for them so they've kept it under wraps in terms of his return and his progress and they've obviously done it for good reason um possibly in case there were any further setbacks to protect him um and and root and potential rumours that may follow about his future in football if there was to be a setback and given the length of time he was out for injure how injured for. But here we saw him get through an hour against Plymouth and it was great to see. He got a very good reception from the crowd, probably the loudest the crowd were all day, given that there wasn't much else to um cheer about. I didn't think he looked 100% but I think that's
00:02:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
to be expected. And as the game wore on, I think we saw his pace. I was worried that he might've lost it a bit, but he still looked quick. Um, we saw his defensive ability. We saw his overlapping runs up that left-hand side. I think if we're going to criticize it slightly, the final ball wasn't always that of high quality but i think that's something we've always known about rico henry i think he won a lot of corners and it was amazing to see him back and it was amazing just for ever to have a corner and see the the last man back again is rico henry knowing that if they clear the ball he is likely to be the first man to it
00:03:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it's a massive boost to the team moving forwards. As Thomas Frank says, I don't expect him to start um against City and I don't necessarily expect him to start against Liverpool either. I think it's about building himself up both in terms of fitness and performance as well. I think it's very difficult to be out for so long and then to come back at such a high level against you know the elite clubs of um England and I think this is a good good starting point. he but He was still one of Brantford's better players on the day and I think that says a lot um given that he has been out for so long. and
00:03:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
If there's one thing I need to say, I don't think he deserves to be on the win on the losing team, um, at the weekend. And I, and I did feel slightly sad for him at the end that we weren't able to get a win for him. But yeah, it's fantastic to see him back. Aaron Hickey in the build up as well. I did an interview with, um, the Brentford staff after signing his new contract.
00:04:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
to say that he may only be a few weeks away, he's back out on the grass, i'm not in team training yet, and that they're likely to take it very cautiously and carefully like they did with Rico Henry, but the prospect in a few months time of having Hickey and Henry both back in the side is an absolutely fantastic one and he must have been proud and to see what's possible in a few weeks down the line for himself um as well watching Rika Henry out there on Saturday and like I said I think he gave a good account of himself.

Team Strategy and Player Management

00:04:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's the positive and that's the only positive unfortunately in this episode
00:04:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
away from that we look at the team news and once again it's a similar theme to what we spoke about after the Newcastle game and the Sheffield Wednesday game in the Carabao Cup earlier this season as well. I consider just re-releasing those episodes. I didn't want to really want to talk about it all again, but here we are. We saw the core of the team rested with Mark Flecker and Nathan Collins, Kean Lewis-Potter, Brian and Bummo and Yarn Whistle are all on the bench.
00:05:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Christian Norguard and Vitalia Nelt not involved at all and not seemingly injured either as they will be back in midweek against Manchester City. In my opinion it doesn't matter who we're playing against I think that is too many of our very best players missing. I would argue that out of our seven most important players this season I think six of them were missing and I'm including Damsguard as the exception here because he started the game but otherwise I would give I would go Flecken, Collins, Keen Lewis, Potter and Boomer, Wisser and Norguard are probably our six most important players and if Norguard is not in the team you want Janelle in the team covering for him and the fact that both of them were not on the bench
00:06:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
those two in particular, concerned me the most.

Midfield and Tactical Critiques

00:06:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, the the the replacements that came into the side included a number of younger and fringe players, including Vowden Marston in goal, still don't really know how good he is, didn't have a lot to do, made a couple of good saves, did what he needed to. I don't think the goal was his fault at all, so he gave a good account of himself. Kim Jisoo, I think he did well as well.
00:06:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
The main issue I have was that midfield partnership of Maghoma and Jarmoleuk. It wasn't clear to me who would do the Norguard or the Inelt role. It was... It it screamed naivety to me, I think. It is very difficult to play against a side that we know are going to come out in a low block.
00:07:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think in midfield is where you need to control things and I thought it was a bit of a mess if I'm completely honest and that's not a criticism criticism of any of those young players as individuals either. I thought Fabio Carvalho obviously came in as well, still looks to be struggling a little bit and I just thought the big issue in that middle was the lack of strength, the lack of leadership in central midfield, the lack of someone breaking up play you know, keeping everyone else calm and getting the ball into good areas and being patient and going forward at the right time. I just thought it was all slightly off and it looked like this individual players trying to do different things. Equally, further ahead of him, we saw Kevin Schade deployed again as a number nine, as a central striker. I've said it many times this season, I,
00:08:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
don't like Shada as a central striker, I prefer him out on the left. That's the position he played in when he scored the hatchery against Leicester. That's the position he played in last week when he had a good game and scored against Southampton. Carvalho and Dam's guard in the middle as well. Neither of them really brought too much width to the side. We know Dam's guard likes to drift around, likes to get on the ball, but we need him on the ball in the middle really. Carvalho as well, you get the feeling he wants to be a number 10.
00:08:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Jenson in there as well with Yarmoliuk and Makoma, I felt that they were all kind of try like getting in each other's way almost. And we saw Yarmoliuk even drift out to the right at times, but that that's simply not his position. And I think not only did the changes take out a lot of quality from our side in terms of removing Pobliel,
00:09:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
six, six of our seven best players. I would say I would normally include Rico Henry in that, but obviously given his situation, this was very much just him coming back from injury and a fitness exercise for him. So I would say six of our best seven players missing. And then on top of that, I just felt we were shoehorning players into the side. I felt that.
00:09:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
We weren't helping get the best out of those on the pitch with Charder up front, with Carvalho, Damsgaard and Jensen all kind of in the same space. Yarmolik being dragged out wide. I just don't think it was a natural place for any of them to be. And ultimately, I think it showed in their performance. I actually think when the likes of Mbuma and Whissa came on in the second half, it actually got worse, I thought.
00:09:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
It looked even more messy. um The likes of Yarmolek and Magcoma made way, which meant the dams guarding Jenson were kind of the two deeper midfielders in front of a back four. And whilst I think you can have one of them there, I i wouldn't necessarily have both of them there. And I think you're missing someone like Norgard or someone like, you know, just to be there as that defensive shield, like they should be in that position. And I thought it was summed up by the goal which Whitaker scored. Wisser and Jenson were the two closest players to Whitaker as he made the strike and they didn't attempt to get close enough to him. They didn't attempt to block the shot. They didn't attempt to make an interception. They essentially did not sense the danger and that is why I think you need someone like Norgard or Janelle in the side and I think it is incredibly naive
00:10:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
to even against Asai bottom of the championship, struggling away from home, you know struggling for goals in general. I think it is very naive against anybody to assume that you can go into that game without you know some kind of cover in that area of the pitch. And I think, like I said, when Mbuma and Wasser came on, I think it looked looked just even more messy.
00:11:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
and because sha Shada stayed up front seemingly, Wisser was almost behind him as a number 10, Dam's guard had to drop deeper. The only real person I saw in his position and trying to do something was Brian and Bummo, but you can't ask the likes of him to bail us out in the last 20 in the last 30 or 40 minutes when there's no structure around him.
00:11:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
when the opposition are sitting in the low block and when he's clearly our danger man so you know that they would have been paying him extra focus and I thought it was actually up against Barley Mumba who was the Plymouth left back who I thought was their best player on the day alongside Whittaker and and though and those two were two that we picked up in the preview before the game and Ultimately, I thought Plymouth deserved it.

League vs Cup Priorities

00:12:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
that They started the likes of Whitaker, a member who played 90 minutes despite them having a really important game on Tuesday themselves. Despite Plymouth having to play 46 games in the championship season, they still thought they'd give this a go with even with the prospect of them getting relegated from the championship. They flew into challenges and they like wanted it a lot.
00:12:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that's not surprising. i don't find that I think we should have expected that from any so any lower league side that comes to a Premier League side. Of course you're going to win. Of course you're going to be up for it. Their fans are really up for it. Their players are really up for it. It's going to be a really big occasion for them and it's up to Brentford to be ready for that. And it's up to Brentford to take that really seriously. I just don't think we did that enough. And that is my ultimate disappointment with this performance with the team selection and ultimately I don't think it did any good particularly to the belief of the players that came in and to their development um because I just don't think it would have given them the confidence that they would have required to then make more of an impact in Premier League games going forward. so
00:13:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
After the break, I will be discussing what is next at Brentford and how we should have, in my opinion, approaches one differently.

Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to part two of your daily Brentford podcast. So what is next to Brentford after their exit from the FA Cup and the exit that we suffered in December from the Carabao Cup? Only 18 games of Premier League football remain this season whilst currently sitting in 11th place. Relegation is looking very unlikely this season and a shot at European football at this stage looks very much like a long shot.
00:15:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
This is where the frustration lies, I guess, to me. ah We face City and Liverpool at home in the next week, and there's every chance we could get zero points from those games, and at which point those European places start to look very far away. And with us in that area of the table, and and i and I say this, i'm not I'm not assuming that Thomas Frank, you know,
00:15:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
is going to lose these next two games this week but you know he must recognize the quality of those two sides and realize that there is a good chance of that happening um and that doesn't mean that Brentford can't believe and it doesn't mean that you know we we we can't plan to win those games I actually do think we will get something against City tomorrow I think it's almost written in the stars, and and given how City have played this season, um recently I think we can really hurt them. But ultimately, even if we were to win that game, I still consider European football next season a bit of a long shot based on league position. and Certainly as much of a long shot, if anything, than you know going far in in in the FA Cup and potentially winning the FA Cup.
00:16:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, what frustrated me after the game is that I had a look at the other results in the FA Cup um at the weekend and Southampton, Wolves and Leicester all went near full strength or full strength completely against Championship opposition despite being in a relegation battle. All three sides won.
00:17:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Brentford were the only Premier League team in the third round to go out to lower league opposition in the third round. Southampton's 3-0 result and Leicester's 6-2 results against QPR and and Southampton's was against Swansea, I believe. show That just shows a quality difference but between the Premier League and the Championship. Given that Leicester and Southampton are struggling so much this season,
00:17:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
It shows a difference in quality. If we do start your best players and if you do start with a rhythm, I feel like making any changes or certainly making six or seven changes as Brentford did, it is going to cause a disjointed performance in any in any side. And that doesn't mean the players that came in aren't better than Plymouth's players. I think they were.
00:17:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think that they in terms of quality that we were the better team and I can see how some may think that we should be winning that game anyway but I think if you change aside it will cause a disjointed performance and if you play players out of position and if there's not as clear of a tactical plan as there certainly is normally, then I think it's a recipe for disaster and I think we've seen it all too often um for Brantford unfortunately in recent seasons and you and you simply can't underestimate these sides.
00:18:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
now If Southampton, Wolves in leicester ah and and there would have been more, but i'm I'm using those as an example, given that they played teams of similar strength to Plymouth and, you know, in terms of squad size and budgets and everything like that, they can be seen as similar to Brentford. If they can play a near full strength team,
00:19:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
in the third round and they recognize the importance of getting that win and getting through over Brentford and we don't necessarily put the you know put that down as a priority, then what does that say? Because those three sides are involved in a relegation battle and they are doing it.
00:19:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
so It leads me to ask the question, what is our aim this season? And I know we did not plan to go out of the FA Cup. Thomas Frank would have thought that that team would have been good enough. Thomas Frank was hoping to win the game. I'm not saying he wasn't, but you can't underestimate these sides first and foremost. And I don't think Thomas Frank would be one to do that.
00:19:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
We were in the position ourselves of the likes of Plymouth not long ago, and we have also shocked bigger sides as the lower league side in cup competitions in the past. So I think it shows incredible naivety to make so many changes, particularly when so many key players are the ones that you are bringing out, and then to expect something different. Now we've had the warnings, we've had the warnings I'm just talking this season um where our Carabao cut run was largely unconvincing, culminating in a penalty shootout win against Sheffield Wednesday in a game that, you know, if we went a bit stronger, we really probably should be winning that in 90 minutes.
00:20:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
and We all know what happened in the quarterfinal against Newcastle. Newcastle were a top team. We could have lost that game anyway. But it is telling that we beat them in the league with a completely different side, less than 10 days before. And I will once again say if this was a Premier League game on Saturday, it would have been a very, very different Brentford side than we saw.
00:20:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, I understand Thomas Frank even alluded to it in his press conference that he that there was some place he didn't want to play or didn't need to play and due to having to manage their minutes and due to their meeting arrest. Now, you know, no guard would pointed out as two of those. Now, what I would say about, you know, is that he didn't start against Southampton. um He has not played a week in between. None of the players have because you haven't had a game.
00:21:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
and, um you know, presuming everything's gone all right in training, and that's the caveat with this. I don't know what's going gone on during the week, um assuming everyone's fit and ready. um If it was a Premier League game, I would have assumed they would all play on Saturday. And I know, I don't have to ask Thomas Frank, I know that if it was a Premier League game, it would have been a different lineup.
00:21:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now I understand Thomas Frank also alluding to the tough week we've got coming up, City and Liverpool games at home, but as I said at the top, but I just think with Brent for sitting 11th in the Premier League, we need to look at prioritising these cup competitions. And you've got to take these games seriously enough to ensure that you go through and we simply didn't and um we and we um got punished and now we're sitting here at the beginning of January thinking that you know it's very unlikely we do anything to you know really create history in this season which is a great shame for a team that's worked so hard and done so so well over the years and I'm um i'm not
00:22:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
I am criticising Thomas Rank, but I do appreciate everything he's done for the club. I think he's been brilliant for the club. He is so clearly a Brentford legend, but I do think he is getting it wrong in terms of these cup competitions, even his quotes in the press before the game. He said he would love to take the next step. He'd love to go on a cup one with Brentford to potentially win something with the club. However, this is not reflected in team selections, which clearly do show a priority towards the Premier League despite our relative safe position. Now I understand that Manchester City and Liverpool are better teams than Plymouth but we've still got to beat what's in front of us and there is no good focusing on those games and playing a weaker side against Plymouth if we're not able to beat the team in front of us and it happens far too regularly now. Brentford don't get to the later rounds of these cups and we don't get to have
00:23:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
the big days out if we don't beat the likes of Plymouth in the third round first and we've got to take them very very seriously. Now I think it would have been okay if Thomas Frank wanted to play Vowden Marston against Plymouth and wanted to play perhaps one other or two other young players but I think it was too much to rest so many of the key players I think you know, perhaps, um, Fleckern, Kim Chi-su, and Paris Maghoma. He, perhaps those three, he wants to give them some minutes because I recognize their Premier League minutes had been limited. Then you've got to start, in my opinion, a senior team around them. You've got to start Nathan Collins. You've got to start one of Norgad or UNELT alongside Maghoma. You've got to start Buma and Whissa to,
00:24:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
get us, you know, ahead in the game. They are such reliable goal-scorers and I think the likes of Mankomo would look better then in those patches of play around that kind of structure around him. Now if Brentford go two or three nil up in the game and Buma and Wisser can come off, Vitali Janelle if he starts can come off, Norgar can come off the pitch but we don't get to that stage when we do it this way round, when Boomer and Whistle come on with 30, 40 minutes to go and we're really up against it and we're risking our future in the competition. Now, I just don't understand it. I would also be happy for Thomas Frank to play one of Norgar or Janelle here and to rest the other against Manchester City. To play Janelle at the weekend and then to play a midfield of Norgar against City.
00:25:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think that's perfectly reasonable given our league position. Now I'd be saying something completely different if Brentford are in a battle for the top four or if Brentford are in a battle for relegation to avoid relegation. I would then understand the need for Brentford to, you know, prioritise the Premier League and really make sure we squeeze every single point out the Premier League we can.
00:26:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think now we're in a position though where we can still reasonably lose to City and Liverpool in the next week and then have very little to play for, which I think is very, very unfortunate. And I know the players won't say that they have little to play for. I know the club won't actually have little to play for because financially every position you ended in the Premier League um gives you more money and ultimately the club will always believe they can do something special until, you know, the possibility of Brent finishing in a European position is not there. But I just think the whole point we are in this game, the whole point we are all fans is that everyone dreams of their club winning things and it's a shame not to see Brent forgive it a proper go. As as a fan of someone like Brentford, we can't take it for granted that we all have a squad
00:26:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
of the quality that we are at right now. We can't take for granted that this these times will last forever. And I think when we've got a squad that is so good, when we've got the likes of Brian and Bumo in the team, when we've got a brilliant manager in Thomas Frank, we need to take these moments and we need to take these chances to see where we can go in the cup. Now, I know Plymouth ended up getting a draw against Liverpool, which I'm sure they're very happy about in in the fourth round, but there was every chance as well that Brentford could have won that game at the weekend and got another favourable draw. Even if Brentford had to play Liverpool at home in the Cup, there's every chance in 90 minutes on one given day that we could shock them and knock them out of the competition.
00:27:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
so I just think, from my point of view, it's very disappointing that we haven't tried to prioritize that and make history and try to do something we've never done before. Now, that's not going to be easy. I still don't for one minute think we're ever going to win the FA Cup. But there's always a chance, I think, if we take it seriously and if we are one of those sides that you know does put a first team out, a proper first team out, and gives it a proper go.
00:28:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So that's just my point of view. I know a lot of people disagree. There are some that do agree that the the Premier League should always be the priority. The league is always a bread and butter and that but matters

Stadium Atmosphere

00:28:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
above all else. And I am just one of those who thinks depending on your position in the league, I think that should determine, you know, how you prioritize these competitions. And the last thing I will say is the G-Tech was full.
00:28:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
it was full at the weekend but the atmosphere was poor the faces around the stadium were different to usual there wasn't a lot of the regular season and ticket holders in attendance it looked like and it affected the atmosphere and I thought I thought the team also did affect the atmosphere as well it was a disappointing performance it wasn't too much to get up for but
00:29:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think this has done anything, unfortunately, in in future seasons, and I won't be one of the ones that turns that turns away, but I do understand why a lot of season ticket holders don't come to these games. And that is really, really disappointing. I mean, on on Thursday night,
00:29:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
in the Sheffield United FA Cup game, we saw only 6,000 people attend Bramble Lane, which is um ah a massive stadium um for anyone that doesn't know, and they're a well-supported club in the championship. But they knew that their team doesn't typically take these competitions seriously, or they knew that they had other things to prioritize this season, such as promotion back to the Premier League. So,
00:30:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
their fans simply didn't turn out and they lost 1-0 and I think that is a danger here the ah FA Cup is often associated with magic or giant killings and things like that but it doesn't work if the clubs at the top start to not take it seriously or don't give it a proper go and I think there is a danger there is a danger I can see it now next season if Brent forget a similar side of the statue to Plymouth at home next season in the third round then it will be a similar crowd. And there won't be that passionate support quite simply than there normally is. And I do urge Thomas Frank to rethink um how he approaches these competitions. um I mean, it's through his own best work that we are where we are in the league, that we are, we can call ourselves a sustainable Premier League club at the moment, that we are in mid table, that we are looking quite safe.
00:31:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I would encourage them to dream and and just do everything we can to go to the next level if the league position allows. And that is my disappointment that we didn't just give it a bit of a better go. I mean, the next two FA Cup weekends are on free weekends for Brentford. So Brentford will not have a game for two weeks now.
00:31:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
um at the time that the fourth round takes place because there's not even a midweek game either side but on on the fourth round weekend, I don't believe. So it is just a shame.
00:31:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
um What I will say to finish on a bit of a brighter note is that two seasons ago Brentford lost on penalties to Gillingham in the cup and beat City days later earlier to having the famous win with Ivan Tony's late winner and I can honestly see um history repeating itself.
00:32:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I simply think that some of the players will be rested, they'll be back into the squad. I think we'll do well this week but my frustration and I think it will be a completely different game on Tuesday night as well but my frustration is that I I would have rather a seen us go through here and see what we can do in the cup and take it very seriously and then if we take it very seriously and still lose that's fair enough we've done all we can we can't say that we could have done more but
