Brentford's Back-to-Back Home Losses

00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to another episode of the Daily Brentford Podcast with myself, Daniel, where today we'll be reviewing defeat to Arsenal at the GTEC on Wednesday evening, which makes it back to back home defeats in the Premier League.

Brentford's Lineup Challenges Due to Injuries

00:00:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
just before we get going guys we're a brand new company so we're looking for your support over the coming season and beyond as we look to bringing the best and most in-depth coverage across the entire network whether this is a five-star review on your favorite podcasting platform or a recommendation to your friends we are very grateful for any support that you are able to give us so then in relation to the team news for this game there was plenty of news flying about before kickoff Mark Flecken in positive news was fit to play in goal didn't have his best game which we'll go on to but it is a relief that we have someone tried and tested I guess in goal for the for the foreseeable future and that it wasn't as too serious of an injury as we discussed in the preview I think with Vanna Marston it is just a little bit of the unknown
00:01:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
um and I'm sure when he's ready to play more that that he will naturally do so anyway Vandenberg also returned and started um at the back alongside Nathan Collins I wonder whether he would have started necessarily if um there are other centre backs available whether he was rushed back to an extent Um, given the crisis in defense, I didn't think he had his best game either.

Midfield Setup and Tactical Impact of Kevin Shada's Absence

00:01:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, it was his first game playing in a back four, um, set in the back alongside Collins. Um, and of course it was a game that I think naturally we would have probably preferred to have gone in a back five, uh, but personnel just simply did not allow us to do so. We did however, set up with an extra midfielder. Yarmoliot came in.
00:02:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
um for Kevin Shada and kind of made a midfield three with a between him, Norgard and Yannell. I did find that Norgard and Yannell, at times, one of them would step into the back line to kind of make it a backfire, but I thought mostly we set up in a and a back four with Yarmudik in the middle as well. Damzgar giving a bit of a free roll and then a clear front two with Brian and Bummo and Joanne Wisser.
00:02:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
What that did do is mean that we did lack an outball. um I thought Whissa actually did win a couple of flick-ons against the ah Arsenal defence, particularly in the first half, which I thought was a little bit of a surprise, but a very positive one.
00:02:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I did think that we lost something thing in removing Kevin Shada in not having that option to go long to him up against an opposition full back.

Player Updates: Jenson and Carvalho

00:03:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
And, you know, we know that he does have a presence in the air Kevin Shada more so than Whissa and Brian Abumo. Once again, I can't help but thinking this would have also been a brilliant game for Eagle Tiago. But we are where we are, I guess, in terms of injuries.
00:03:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Another player that Brentford saw return to the bench was Matthias Jenson. I think it's great to have him back. um He had a little cameo towards the end of the game coming off a dam's guard and yeah, I think he's a someone ah especially looking ahead to the Southampton game at the weekend. I think he's someone who we could utilize, who I think should come back into the team and could help us be a bit more creative.
00:03:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
um going forward with his passing range, so I think it is great to have him back. We did see Carvalho, Fabio Carvalho, missing from the bench. He has been linked a little bit um with Leeds in the Championship. um I can't see Brentford, and I don't think think there's any reason for Brentford to look to get

Damsgaard's Progress and Carvalho's Role

00:04:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
rid of this stage. I think ah would ah I would urge caution with any new signings and how long it takes him to bed in. on the i mean Dabbsguard is the big example of this now. I mean, he struggled for the first year or even a bit longer than a year of his time at Brentford. You know, he's had periods where he's looked quite good. He's had good games here and there, but it was only really this season that he's really, really kicked on and he looks absolutely brilliant. so
00:04:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think we've got to stick with Kavale. I've got to think we but we um need to have belief that it will come good. we We paid the money for him for a reason because he has quality. Again, he has shown flashes of quality when he has played. I don't expect the fact that him being out the bench.
00:04:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
on Wednesday night was anything other than a minor injury which is what Thomas Frank also seemed to allude to. I also think it would be silly with the lack of depth that we currently have on the bench and all the injuries we have. I think it would be silly to let him go. um Even if it was on loan I think he has value to the team and you know we are already one or two injuries away from him having to start games so I think he needs to be around the second half of the season.

Arsenal's Squad and Kai Havertz's Absence

00:05:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
In terms of Arsenal, we saw no Kai Havertz. I think there was a bit of a rumour. circulating before kickoff that there was a sickness bug going around the Arsenal team. It seems like Kai Havertz may have been a victim of that. Declan Rice also, I don't know what condition he was in because he was only deemed fit enough for the bench. That was a boost for Brentford, although Calla Fiore did return as it was slightly alluded to in in the crossover episode. He did return from injury.
00:06:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
to play at left back and you know perhaps we can say Brian did get the better of him to an extent um of course leading to our goal otherwise I thought Arsenal set up and in a pretty strong manner I thought Nwanyeri was quite good, um having played his, that was his first start, having made his Premier League debut as well, also at the G-Tech a couple of seasons ago. I think, you know, he has a little bit of the skill that, you know, they they lose, you know, having lost someone like Sakaso.
00:06:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think he did well. Of course, you had the likes of Martin Odegard, Gabriel Jesus, who has been on form recently, even prior to this game, um and the center of that partnership of Saliba and Gabrielle, and of course, Darrid Rare behind him, who got a very, very good reception at the G-Tech from all four corners, gave the breadth of fans a clap at the end, and and did us a little bit of a favor in many ways. He didn't he did not have his finest game in goal for Arsenal, certainly not this season. um I have one Arsenal supporting friend and they said this was the worst he has been all season in this game. So, David Rhea trying to do us a favour there I guess. But after the break then, we will be going into how the first half unfolded.

Hello and welcome to part two of your daily Brentford midweek match

First Half Highlights: Brentford vs Arsenal

00:08:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
review. So the first half against Arsenal, I thought Brentford actually started quite well. Arsenal dominated possession as what was expected, but you could see in their play that they were struggling a little bit to create anything from open play, also something that was expected. um It was a lot of passing around the box, a lot of passing around the fence.
00:08:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
the getting the odd crossing but the likes of Collins and Vandenberg were able to deal with that quite comfortably and it was looking good for a while um and it was made to look even better when we had a couple of moments ourselves going forward culminating in the interception and once again everything good we did or nearly everything good we did went through this man it was the interception from Damsguard driving run setting up Brian and Bumo to do what he does best cut inside to place it at Raya's near post I think Raya himself judging by his movements was perhaps expecting him to curl it into the far corner and got caught out a bit there
00:09:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And it was a great finish and it was a great start. And it was the the thoughts at the time were that, you know, we need to take these chances. If we are to have chances, we need to take them because we hadn't created much before that Brian, Brian effort. And I think, you know, the fact we took it, you got a feeling, you know, maybe just maybe it could be our day. If we are going to be clinical in front of goal and solid at the back.
00:10:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Shortly after that, a routine King Louis Potter shot was spilled by Raya, again, who managed to scramble back to his line to claw it off the line. But, you know, that that is uncharacteristic, let's say, from Raya. I know he has um mistakes in him, as as we know from his time at Brentford. But it was very much a routine King Louis Potter shot, you know, perhaps a so kind of shot that I think that's the area gate of his game that he could improve on. I think, you know, his end product isn't the best. And I think, again, this one was straight at David Rare, essentially. But, you know, slip through his hands and he managed to claw it off the line. And, you know, another ball's width and it would have been in and.
00:10:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
that for me I think is where the game turned because within the next minute or two Gabriel Jesus had given Arsenal the lead at the other end and I thought it's just one of those moments it's it's just that moment in the game where you think oh this is where it changes and it's unfortunate I don't think we can say anything more than that obviously it should have been a comfortable regulation saved by Rhea. He didn't do that, he's built it, but I guess he did just enough to make up for the error, whereas we made an error at the other end and and were

Second Half Struggles and Defensive Errors

00:11:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
punished for it ultimately. I thought that we were caught on the edge of our own box with Brian Abumo, the goalscorer moments earlier, being dispossessed. I felt that
00:11:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
This was a bit of a theme. I thought that we were forced to have to play out from the back and I thought we did it actually to some success in the first half because Arsenal weren't pressing us in a particularly strong manner. I thought you know one or two of them were going at times.
00:11:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
but you know it was still quite comfortable to play through and we were relying on a maybe a bit of magic between Amboomo Whistler and Damsgar between those three to get out and have opportunities on the counter and I feel that that works sometimes but this goal was an example of it not working. Brian and Boomo being dispossessed on the edge of your box and you know normally you would say you can't do those kinds of things on the end of your box because it it's a dangerous area to lose the ball, which ultimately is what happened. And, you know, Gabriel Hayes has finished it off, but I think Brentford will be a bit disappointed at the messiness of that goal. And indeed the others, which will go on to talking about this is an occasion where we're just ultimately caught short in terms of playing out from the back and
00:12:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Again, I alluded to at the beginning of the podcast, I think we would have benefited from the likes of Kevin Shada. you know, to be able to hold the line, to be able to get forward and to be able to go along towards him. So we didn't have to rely on having to play, you know, play out very intricately from the Arsenal onslaught because, you know, that they were expected to have most of the ball and we had to get forward with some regularity.
00:13:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
um ah Despite that, and I'll move on from that now, I thought we were still in the game at the half-time break, which was positive. um yeah I would not have been displeased with a point, so the fact that we were there at half-time was good, and I thought that, again, Arsenal aren't creating too much here. If we can stay solid defensively, maybe there is something in the game for us, and you know if we can get forward again and create one more big chance, and if we take it, then you never know what could happen.
00:13:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
After the break, I will be going through what did happen um in the second half as Brantford ultimately fell to defeat.

Hello and welcome to part three of your daily Brentford podcast. I fought the second half once again, continued a recent theme that I found myself talking about quite regularly in these podcasts where we started a little bit slowly at the beginning of the second half. and And I don't know what's behind this, but I feel that this is a theme. I feel like it happened against Forrest. I feel like it's happened before that as well.
00:15:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I often just find myself talking about this I think at the start of the second half which I think is interesting for a team that were praised so much earlier on this season for fast darts and scoring inside the first minute etc. I just think at times we can be caught a little off the boil um especially at the start of the second half.
00:15:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that's what happened again here. I thought, you know, firstly, from a corner and out and we knew of the arsenal threat at corners. So it is very disappointing to concede one of these um even, you know, when you consider the manner of it, I'm even more ah disappointed about it. um This is despite Arsenal missing their main corner takers in Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice, who also takes them.
00:16:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was on the bench at the time. Flecken came for the corner and completely misses his punch and is then off his line. He's caught in a goal mouth scramble and it's very messy. neith None of the defenders or Flecken are able to take control of the situation. They're not able to get the ball away and it is just extremely messy. And Mikko Marino ultimately was the quickest to react and the tucked home for the away side.
00:16:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Again, I just think it's very disappointing to see this type of goal against the top team. you know I wouldn't be grudge this defeat if the goal had been you know a goal of genuine quality from a team of genuine quality, but I just did not feel that that was the case.
00:16:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
in relation to this goal I thought it was just very scrappy and that we should have dealt with it and and you know, Flecken ultimately maybe is to blame but even then the the defenders and you know and they need to be quicker to the ball they need to be quicker to the reaction and somebody needs to take charge in there to to scramble it away it just looked very very messy two unfortunately became three within minutes as a cross came in Nathan Collins again failed to really clear our lines, it was a tame header, didn't manage to even clear the penalty area and it was cleared straight to Martinelli who was able to struck Conebond Flecken who was unsighted, he didn't appear to move, I think the ball had to travel through many bodies to get to the goal and Flecken just simply did not see it coming and
00:17:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
again disappointing we should have dealt a bit better and again how many times we sat here this season bemoaning the fact that Brentford have conceded two or more goals in quick succession and ultimately dropped points on winning positions you know is it it's a shame to see and i think this was a game perhaps a little bit similar to a lot of our other games this season against the big six where we have had periods where we have done okay we've had periods where perhaps we deserved a little bit more but then

Brentford's Response and Future Aims

00:18:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
our hard work is ruined by mistakes or by sloppy defending or by inviting too much pressure or by simply just not clearing our lines um and trying to be too clever or just simply not having the composure and the authority to get the ball away um and to sense that danger
00:18:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that is disappointing because, you know, ultimately we've got nothing to show for it against and against the top side, you know, even even though it's not the battles we necessarily need to fight. I think as breadth of fans over the years, we've but been we've become used to ultimately getting results against these sides now and then. So I think it is just a shame. And again, it impacts our record of the G tech.
00:19:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
which is now starting to look a little bit more ordinary with two home defeats on the bounce. I thought after the third goal what disappointed me the most is that I felt Brentford lacked a bit of belief and they definitely lacked urgency um for the remainder of the game despite us starting to enjoy more possession. I thought Arsenal were very good at winding the game down and frustrating us and I just don't think we had any answers um in terms of going forward, in terms of trying to create something else. I thought we could have been a bit braver. I thought we could have tried to take more risks at that stage in the game, given that it was likely we'd lose the game anyway. But I just never really felt the team had the belief that they could get back into the game. And I thought Thomas Frank's subs ultimately reflected that, taking Damsgar, Wissen, Norgard, and Vandenberg off.
00:19:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I think that was a sign of preparing for an important game at the weekend. And I don't necessarily blame Tom Stramp for that. I think the game probably was gone at that stage. It didn't look like we didn't look like scoring, if I'm really honest. And and if it means that, you know, the players that came off of a fresh for Southampton, given the rest of Southampton will get ahead of the game at the weekend as well.
00:20:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
that being longer than I was, I think, you know, not not necessarily a bad decision there. But my disappointment just towards the end of the game was that Brentford just didn't really try and think of something different. and It was a little bit like the forest second half in some ways in terms of us just running out of ideas completely, except where this time we're faced with a side that you know probably even better than Forrest which is saying a lot considering how Forrest were and how they are flying high in the league themselves but anyway that will do then for today's episode as I said overall I think it was an okay performance on Brentford an okay game but again we just came up short against the side
00:21:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
are ultimately better than us, and I think you know we will be disappointed when we look back at the goals and the manner of how we conceded them. Obviously the rare incident, very unlucky um in terms of it not going over the line, and when Ray has to build it from King Lear's Potter shot. But otherwise, yeah, I'd say you know the best team won, but you know did they really create much, aside from the errors that we made? I'm not sure, I think.
00:21:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
on another day and perhaps maybe with ah with a filler squad with, um you know, full backs at full back. And, you know, more defensive cover and more attacking options on the bench as well. And an outball from someone like Igor Tiago, you know, maybe there was at least a point in that game for us. But anyway, onwards and upwards. Thank you for listening to the Daily Brentford podcast.
