So let's get straight into it. The away hoodoo is over and Brent forgot three points off the on the road in emphatic fashion against Southampton at St Mary's on the weekend. Let's start with the team news.

Brentford Lineup Changes and Bench Concerns

00:01:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think we saw, even from just looking at that line-up, a positive approach and a show of to intent from Brantford, we saw Matthias Jenson come in for Janelle just to add a different dimension to that midfield, a bit of extra ball-playing ability. We know how good Jenson is, even in that deeper role, he can play those long diagonals.
00:01:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
he can help break teams down and he can help us play out from the back a little bit more than maybe a you know who you might want in games perhaps against better teams where you know defensively the defensive side of the game might be a bit more important but I thought that was the right decision for this one I expected and this wasn't necessarily the case but I expected Southampton to be quite difficult to break down and having someone like Jenson in there alongside, you know, as well as Dam's Guard, and we all know what Dam's Guard can do by now, um was exactly what we needed um to unpick those locks and get the likes of Brian and Bumbo, Kevin Sharda, and Aaron Ramsdale, and Joanne Whistler, and get them getting shots away against Ramsdale.
00:02:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
The other change that I've just mentioned him was Kevin Shada in for Yarmolek. Just his pace, his power and the opposition defence having to be occupied by him as a third option up front alongside Whistler and Bummo. Something that we need, I think for this one, I don't think we needed that extra man in midfield, um which Yarmolek gave us against Arsenal. And I thought it was just ah display of our intentions um with that lineup before kickoff. Of course on the bench Fabio Carvalho was still missing with injury and there were no new returners on the bench which once again
00:03:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
leaves a concern as to what Brentford do if we need to chase the game off the bench. One player on the bench I did want to just have a little talk about is Paris Magcoma, spent last season in League One on loan at Bolton.
00:03:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
has looked bright when he's come on this season, looked tidy on the ball, he looks um like a composed player, stepping up two leagues to the Premier League which is not easy to do at all and I thought he was very very bright again here and had a massive part to play in one of the goals which we will talk about later.
00:03:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
From a Southampton point of view, I thought that they showed their intent as well.

Southampton's Defensive Strategy

00:03:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
They started Paul Arduaccio up front. He has not scored yet for Southampton despite being there for a couple of years now. um But just by his sheer size, I think he's six foot seven, six foot eight.
00:04:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think that told us that they would look to go a bit more direct here, um unlike the start they're known for under their old manager Russell Martin where they that where they would keep the ball a lot more. They also set up a back five which again told me that they were looking to sit in and be difficult to break down and I thought we would genuinely see that from them because watching the Fulham game, even the even the Crystal Palace game a week before this one. They look more solid, they look much difficult to beat and they look much more in games. And of course this was not the case, especially as the afternoon went on on Saturday. They did however have Tyler Dibbling in the side, he looked lively.
00:04:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Karl Walker Peters who as well was another bright spark who I obviously spoke about in the and crossover and with the Southampton team on Friday and the possibility of him potentially fitting into our team to ease our concerns at full back. I think And I still think he would fit in despite the result on Saturday. I think it's much easier to play at a side who are functioning and who are competitive at the level. And I do think that, you know, he is one of the probably very few in the Southampton side who could do a job in the Premier League um at a better club.

Controversies and Key Moments

00:05:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
I just want to talk about Ramsdale a bit as well of course he was in goal for Southampton he got a lot of stick from the Brentford fans throughout the game a lot of that relating back to obviously he was replaced by Darrid Rare at Arsenal and he had to play the two Brentford Arsenal games last season it was one of the only games he ended up featuring him in because Ray was on loan and couldn't play um and definitely at the Emirates he made a high profile error leading to the whistle goal last season. So those that was the team news for this one and after the break I will go into how the action started.

Hello and welcome to part two of your daily Brentford podcast. Let's get straight into the action. I thought Brentford started well, they were front footed and they were bright um in the first half at St Mary's. Almost like a game down at the G-Tech and I will talk later about how I think this game shows that more so our fixture list has contributed to the disparity between our home forward away form and I don't actually think that we are that much better at home than we are on the road or certainly not more so than most other teams who tend to be a little bit better at home than they are when they play away.
00:07:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
And once again, to get things going, we saw some really good work from Mikhail Dam's guard, winning the interception, showing his tenacity to get to the ball first, to get round one or two men, and then showing his vision and quality to set Shada up with a tiny, tidy finish past Ramsdale. There was a little bit of a shout and this might have gone under the radar for many people with a possible red card in the build-up. Damsgarh was caught by a gachuk who I think for Southampton um with his studs up on Damsgarh's knee. Of course Damsgarh did not make a fuss about it, he did not go down, he carried on playing
00:08:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Brent forgot the goal but I don't think that was checked by VAR and that the goal stood um and no cards were given. On another day, I don't know whether we'll stand on this of course,
00:08:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
it would be double jeopardy in a way if Southampton were down to 10 and we were to score but at the same time if it is dangerous play if it is studs up you've seen them given perhaps in the past although I have to also say by VAR I've also seen them not given um both this season and in seasons gone by I have to say however it was a very good finish from Kevin Schader and we obviously know by now what Michael Damska can do as he did in the build up there. It was perhaps quite frustrating for Brentford not to score and build on the lead in the first half.
00:09:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Bummo fed Wisser, again another deflected pass, which kind of deflected through the Southampton back line, just as Dam's guard ball in for Shana's opener did. um It fell for Wisser, it's one he'd normally score, Ramsdale turned it away, again in the first half, Noor guard had a header from a free kick, it didn't make very good connection, I don't think he made a connection with his head at all actually, I think it more came off his shoulder,
00:09:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
um and that came off the bar and at that point in the game you're thinking are we missing opportunities here are we missing opportunities to put this game away for Southampton into losing confidence which naturally they would do and they later did go on to doing um given that they're only on six points and they're struggling this season And the biggest thought in my mind, I guess, at that point was, are we going to allow Southampton back into the game? Are we going to let them do something, and especially with Brentford away record on my mind and possibly on the players minds as well as as we try to see the game out. If the game got to the late stages, ah only one nil.
00:10:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
in that first half then and towards the end of the first half, Southampton probably did have their best spell in the last 10 or so minutes. However, have they did really just lack ideas, runs around the edge of the area. I think the quality difference in relation to Brentford's front players with a Bermo, Wisser, Schadner and Damsgaard. And then you look at the same with Southampton.
00:11:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's just such a stark contrast and I think that was the main differences on the day. um there were There were signs again towards that first half of the Brentford did drop their shape a little bit.

Brentford's Dominant Performance

00:11:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
We did invite a little bit of pressure from Southampton and I think the half-time break actually came at a useful time for Brentford and at a time where, you know, we could, it was a good half, we were one goal ahead, but I thought we could do a little bit of a reset and to try and get back on the front front and dominate in the second half. And that's exactly what we did. And we will talk about that shortly. And I think this was a game which Brentford dominated for nearly, nearly 90 minutes. But I thought at the end of the first half and maybe slightly before, slightly after Vandenberg's disallowed goal,
00:11:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
was the two periods where we did allow a bit of pressure. We will come onto that as discussed after this break.

Hello and welcome to part three of your Daily Brentford Podcast. so Then I thought the second half kicked off in much of the same manner as the first. Whistler had another opportunity leading to a corner before Vandenberg struck or so we thought from the resulting effort. As we know now, that was disallowed for Whistler holding on to, I think it was Taylor Howard-Bettis.
00:13:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
and and although the referee gave the goal, VAR checked it and said it was disallowed for holding. I've got to say it's it's an interesting one because I think these are not always given. I think the refereeing in particular with these this type of thing is very inconsistent and I think that if VAR was intervening in these situations every time. I think we'd see a lot more disallowed goals if I'm completely honest. I think what probably went against Wisser was that it wasn't very subtle. He was holding him with both hands, both arms, he had them round, Harwood Bellis almost, and perhaps he was also holding on for too long. Of course, Harwood Bellis made the most of it by going down in such dramatic fashion.
00:14:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
um and I can see why they disallowed it but I do think you know on another day it also would not surprise me if that goal was allowed and I have to say from the away end there is nothing like an unexpected disallowed goal from the away end because from where I was stood it did not I did not see anything you know totally wrong with the goal often you can tell if there was a bit of a foul in the build up or something was our side It wasn't so obvious from the away end for this one and Vandenberg again didn't didn't notice anything um untoward. he
00:14:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
celebrated it um like his first goal which it was um and i do feel a bit sorry for him um that that didn't come but i'm sure if he gets into those positions he was completely unmarked from that corner i'm not sure how abellis who was jostling with whissa um would have picked him up either um so i do think there is more to come if he can get into those positions and show the quality that he did here. This was the period. Southampton bought Adam Armstrong and Cameron Archer on here anyway. ah To bolster the attacking line, the Onuachi experiment was over at this point. And I thought for a small period again, Southampton probably had another decent spell around this time. And again, the thoughts from the away end were probably
00:15:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know, we we are either being very, very unlucky with girls being overturned, being offside, or we're just simply not taking our chances to put this game to bed. That was reinforced moments later when ah Kevin Schaden, knocked down, was met by Whissa, and he was through on goal, one-on-one, had space to run at Ramsdale, had time to pick his finish, and he quite emphatically um lasered it over the bar and this is so unlike Whistler to my mind I think if there was one Brentford player you wanted running through on the ball here it would be Whistler he is not someone who normally shies away from a finish and for him to not even get that on target was quite frankly unbelievable and again brought more feelings that you know maybe this isn't our day may maybe um
00:16:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know Southampton may get a goal from you know just one opportunity they had to create at that point and we would root all of these missed chances. Having said that, and moments and later, the next time Jan Wisser received it in the box, he was crowded, he was amongst bodies, it looked like he might shoot, but he didn't, he did the right thing on this occasion. He cleverly passed it to Mboumiho and made kind of an overlapping run beyond him, who had a clear shot at goal, and what a brilliant finish that was from him. And I thought he had a few decent passes and touches before this point,
00:17:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
But after this point, certainly, I think Brian and Bummo caught fire. ah And it was one of the best 20 or 30 minutes I've seen, I think, from a player this season. um I mean, the finish for this goal firstly into the roof of the net, unstoppable, is exactly the right finish, shows how full of confidence he is. And then moments later, when we got a penalty, Vandenberg being pulled out down into the box,
00:17:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
He made it 3-0 and that's 8 out of 8 Premier League penalties for him now. Of course, we all remember Ivan Tony did miss one in the end. I think he might have been on 9 out of 10 or 10 out of 11 by the end. um And there are now only a handful of players ahead of Brian Abumo in terms of having a hundred percent conversion weight in the Premier League from the spot and having taken more than eight penalties. You do sense a little bit of the Ivan Tony technique in in those penalties but you know he he puts his own stamp on it as well and
00:18:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
at that point Brentford are free and up and we could finally breathe in the away end and at this point like we anticipated perhaps a little bit earlier on we scored a couple more and Southampton capitulated. Keen Lewis Potter probably should have added to the score line before he did um firing wide at the near post of Aaron Ramsdale again this is this is again what we have criticized Keno as part of four in the past the end product the file delivery um and that's led to me at times thinking you know maybe he is better at left back in some ways maybe he's has been in the wrong position this time and um
00:19:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know he he flourishes more and left back because hes he's great on the ball he can get the ball forward he can make those runs but I think that final bit is just a little bit missing he is due to sign a contract for Brentford which I am very pleased about and I think he does really very well deserve that after doing such a good job at left bat this season and he celebrated the occasion by making up for the earlier miss by scoring late on and that was a good finish but the man that I want to point out here is Paris Makoma he took the ball in the midfield he skipped past two or three Southampton players played it into Brian and Bummo who then got the assist for keen Lewis Potter I just don't think
00:19:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
we can underestimate how much of a moment that is for Magcoma. I think every player of his stature, a young player perhaps being on loan at a lower level to step up to the Premier League is such a big jump and you've got to take your chances when you get them and I thought for the very first time we could say that this weekend that you know mankoma really really made a difference to that result and really contributed to our win with some top quality football and i know we were only playing south ampton i know they were falling apart a little bit at that point in the game but he showed quality and i think you know like i said at the start of this episode i think he showed quality
00:20:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Even from the very first games he's played this season, definitely on the ball, he he looks like he's got something

Historic Victory and Team Growth

00:20:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
about him. So between him and Yarmolek, hopefully we can see them pushing each other for a space in the Brentford midfield going forward and perhaps this weekend um against Plymouth in the f FA Cup. Wisser at the end then did finally add some extra gloss to the score lie and made up for his earlier misses he ultimately could have had about four in the end but you have to settle for one with a good finish to become Brentford's all-time joint Premier League scorer having caught up with Ivan Toney, Brian Abubo is only a goal behind so it's good to see a bit of healthy competition between the two of those and I can very much imagine that statistic changing
00:21:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
almost on a week-by-week basis they both continue to score. West's goal here also means that Brentford are the first team in the Premier League this season to have two players scoring 10 or more times in the league and Dam's guard of course as well is third in the assist rankings in the Premier League so I think for those three that is something to be incredibly proud of. I think it's difficult to judge this game as a whole I think for as much as we were very very good here I thought Southampton were very very bad and I perhaps didn't appreciate even just looking at their squad on paper before the game that it just doesn't really seem to me to be Premier League quality and I think it was always going to be a tough job whoever came in there and the confidence has clearly gone
00:22:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
the quality was just nowhere near there and I think it's a reminder of how far Brentwood have come especially with those three or four up top and how we can be considered as ah as a ah established Premier League team now. I i thought that the performance as a whole reminded me a little bit of Luton away last season where we won 5-1, Luton scored a consolation on that occasion.
00:22:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
And honestly, on another day, and we know that Southampton has suffered a few of these over the years, it could have been another 9-0, I think, um if you if you just look at the pure mischances that we had here, we we scored five anyway, Vandenbers could have been given on another day, um, King Lewis Potter perhaps should have got another, Wisser should have got another two, I think, Rossev and Yarmoliuk even had efforts, um, which were either bowed away or just fired over in Yarmoliuk's case, so I think
00:23:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
it was very comprehensive, it was very solid and I think if anything ah Brentford do take from this it's the pressure lifted off their shoulders um in terms of getting that away win and it wasn't just any away win it was Brentford's biggest ever away win in the top flight and our biggest win full stop in the top flight since 1938 so I do think there was a lot of value in that I think that this will give us confidence going forwards and obviously we all know that our fixture list now kind of corresponds with the home fixture list we had earlier this season in terms of our next games on the road and I am very much hopeful now that we can push on because I think we proved this weekend that we can play on the front foot, we can play football where we dominate and we can do that away from home as well as at the G-Tech. So i do I mean in terms of whether we were good or whether they were just bad
00:24:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
I do think it was a bit of both and there'll be tougher tests going forward but you can't ask for anything more and I think any 5-0 win in the Premier League, no more away against anybody is something that is extremely positive and something to be celebrated. I think Thomas Frank said as much himself ah said that this is one of our best performances in the Premier League era. So that's about all for today. I think that the one other thing that was quite humorous and I'm sure the Daily Southampton podcast, they will be talking about it today, is that after the game, Adam Armstrong was forced to hand out a side shirt to a Southampton fan who predicted the correct result.
00:25:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah And that to seem insane to me, he he looked as miserable as he possibly could have. ah And it had the Southampton hospitality suite booing him. So I think that's a bit of a sign and a bit of a chuckle, I guess, from our point of view as to where Southampton are at the moment. But that will do for your Daily Brentford
